White House wonder woman Téa Leoni shines in ‘Madam Secretary’
By Jacqueline Spendlove TV MediaAlicia Florrick, Olivia Pope, Carrie Mathison — prime time has be come a popular place for strong fe male characters.
Téa Leoni (“Deep Impact,” 1998) joins the ranks with her first starring television role in 16 years in “Mad am Secretary,” CBS’s new political drama that premiered last month. Leoni plays Elizabeth McCord, the newly appointed U.S. secretary of state, as she juggles her challenging job at the White House and her home life. A new episode of the freshman series airs Sunday, Oct. 19, on CBS.
The premise for “Madam Secre tary” was born after a meeting with two of its executive producers, Lori McCreary and acclaimed actor Morgan Freeman (“The Shaw shank Redemption,” 1994), and CBS chairman Nina Tassler. Mc Creary and Freeman were looking to break into the world of script ed television, and Tassler charged them with coming up with a character — ideally a woman — with a compelling story.
The light bulb came on a short time later during the Beng hazi hearings. Discussions arose as to how such sensitive situations would be handled in the White House and abroad, and the material started coming in fast and heavy.
“What really happens in those American embassies overseas?”
McCreary said to “The Hollywood Times.” “What’s life like for the secretary of state ... and how do you even plan a single moment of your life, a baseball game, when at any minute you could be dealing with rocket attacks in Israel, a military coup in Pakistan and a border crisis with Mexico? Sometimes that’s all before lunch.”
The inspiration for the character of Elizabeth McCord herself came, according to McCreary, when thenSecretary of State Hillary Clinton testified before Congress regarding the 2012 attack in Benghazi.
“It was, honestly, the moment when she raised her fist,” the producer told the “L.A. Times.”
With the meat of the show hashed out, another key step was setting it apart from other political
dramas — particularly those that home and personal life. One of the or women in a man’s world is tryMcCord’s home life also provides solved can be a bit vested in a series
the home front, as well as the in-between world of office politics, allows for problems to arise and see a resolution in the time frame of the series, or even an episode.
A further step in making McCord relatable — formidable though she may be — is that “she can’t be a lifetime politician,” Hall said. “I wanted to bring her in from a realworld situation.”
When the series opens, McCord is a college professor and former CIA analyst. She takes the position of secretary of state at the personal request of Mr. President himself (Keith Carradine, “Cowboys and Aliens,” 2011), following the suspicious death of her predecessor in a plane crash.
She immediately inherits a crack team played by an impressive cast. Emmy-winning actress Bebe Neuwirth (“Cheers”) plays McCord’s somewhat icy chief of staff, Nadine Tolliver, to whom Madam Secretary will have to prove herself in order to win her over. Geoffrey Arend (“Body of Proof”) portrays her speechwriter, Matt Mahoney, while Patina Miller (“All My Children”) plays press co-ordinator Daisy Grant. Rounding out the team is Blake Moran (Erich
Bergen, “Jersey Boys,” 2014), McCord’s handsome young assistant.
The series got off to a strong start with its Sept. 21 premiere, which garnered 14.7 million viewers, despite airing alongside the Pittsburgh Steelers-Carolina Panthers NFL game over on NBC. “The Good Wife,” which immediately followed with its season 6 premiere, drew in only 10 million viewers in comparison. Despite dipping to 12.6 million for its second episode, “Madam Secretary” was the most-watched scripted show of the night, hanging onto 86 per cent of its premiere audience. While the series has so far been met with mixed reviews from critics, even the naysayers tend to praise the cast, and Leoni’s performance in particular.
With so many real-world international conflicts to draw from, “Madam Secretary” is nothing if not current and compelling. With a strong supporting cast and exceptional female lead, the series isn’t likely to struggle its way through its freshman season. Catch a new episode of the political drama, entitled “Blame Canada,” when it airs Sunday, Oct. 19, on CBS.

Late Laughs
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy
Fallon: Jimmy Fallon
There were some major security issues at the White House over the weekend. Actually, two separate incidents. On Friday, one guy got through the front doors of the White House, and on Saturday another guy jumped over the White House fence. Yeah, officials are wondering why it’s so easy to get in. While Obama is wondering why it’s so hard to get out.
Thousands of activists came to New York City for the largest march ever on global warming. Meanwhile, climate change deniers say there’s no proof the march really happened because they couldn’t see it from their windows.
The Late Show: David Letterman
It’s the first day of fall. The leaves are falling and so is the confidence in Roger Goodell.
This guy gets all the way to the front porch of the White House. So they beefed it up. The security people added to the front door one of the sliding chain things.

Life After Beth
Teenaged Zach (DeHaan) is bereaved at the unexpected death of his girlfriend Beth (Plaza). When he discovers that she has miraculously come back to life, Zach is over the moon and vows to take full advantage of this second chance. He’s excited to finally live out all the experiences he regrets missing out on with Beth before, but it soon becomes apparent that the girlfriend he lost is not the same person who’s back from the dead. The
sweet girl he used to know now has violent tendencies and an uncanny taste for human flesh.
Hungry? How often do we stop and think about our food? No, not give a passing thought to the ingredients that went into making it or the fantastic skill it was prepared with. I mean really think about it on a deeper level: why do we react to food the way we do?
Eating ice cream can make your brain freeze up — what a pain! Catching a whiff of bacon frying can make your mouth start to salivate, and just hearing a creative hamburger described can sometimes lead to you actually tasting it in your mouth.
Yes, there’s a science behind the food we eat, and chef Richard Blais is on a mission to get to the bottom of all of this. “Hungry Games” premieres Monday, Oct. 20, on the Food Network with a special sneak peek airing the night before the show.
In his quest to get to the bottom of the many ways that our minds and our bodies react to food, Blais has set up hidden cameras — “Candid Camera” style — to test the ways that ordinary folks experience food.
“Hungry Games” isn’t just some reality show, though. It’s an
exploration of the science behind it all. Throughout the series, Blais will explore the psychology behind our cravings and our decisions about which foods to eat, from determining why mom’s cooking always tastes so good to how using the right language can trigger a
craving for a big, greasy slice of everyone’s favorite: pizza.
Chef Blais is just the man to bring all of this together into an entertaining package. Trained at The Culinary Institute of America, he was the runner-up in season 4 of Bravo’s “Top Chef,” a feat he topped when he took home the top prize in “Top Chef: All Stars.”
His cookbook, “Try This at Home,” was nominated for a prestigious James Beard Award, and
he’s a frequent guest in “Guy’s Grocery Games” and “The Rachael Ray Show,” as well as returning to “Top Chef” as a judge in the current season airing on Bravo.
He’s a man who knows his food, and he’s a great TV personality to boot. With so many shows on the air focused on who’s the “best” chef, “Hungry Games” instead takes a look at what makes the rest of us tick. “Hungry Games” premieres Oct. 20.
