Any day is the perfect day for your dream wedding at Grand View

While Saturday is the most popular day to get married, there are plenty of great reasons to consider a non-traditional day, and even season, for exchanging your vows. An off-peak wedding at Grand View Lodge Resort can mean more of your guests will be able to make it to your celebration while still offering plenty of magic for the big day.

Grand View Lodge Wedding Sales Manager Lindsay Sypnieski says budget-savvy couples enjoy perks of an offseason date for their wedding, which often include discounted pricing and more dates to choose from. This year the resort didn’t host any weddings in February, but next year, there are already three on the calendar, even though it’s the middle of a Minnesota winter.

“Couples can create the feeling of a winter retreat,” she says of this trend. They can make it a fun family weekend with a great vacation scheduled within a wedding celebration.”

Grand View Lodge offers a variety of accommodations onsite for your wedding party, friends and family. Check out the new boutique hotel, luxury townhomes, or the inviting main lodge to keep your party together.

“There is so much to do for your guests from out of town, both at the resort and in the area. Sure, you have to worry about the

weather to some degree,” she says, “but you really do any time of year.”

If you take advantage of having a winter wedding it can mean embracing one of the most picturesque times of year. Activities for your guests can include ice fishing, skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobile rentals. Grand View Lodge has two indoor pools at the resort as well as a water slide, fitness center, newly expanded spa and restaurants. “Offpeak weddings are always a lot of fun,” she says. There is less competition for dates and availability for booking and you will likely have less competition with other events that your friends and family already have on their calendars.

If you choose a date for your wedding that falls around a holiday there will already be an abundance of décor out meaning you can combine your own personal touch with an already festive atmosphere. Saving on the perfect venue means you can free up money from your budget to splurge elsewhere.

Let the creative wedding staff at Grand View Lodge work right beside you through the entire planning process as you tour the indoor and outdoor venue offerings, lock in your reception menu with the culinary staff, and finalize all the details to make sure everything is just the way you imagine.

An Easy Breezy Point Wedding

If your dream wedding includes an outdoor setting surrounded by lush greenery on a breathtaking golf course, or a picturesque spot beside one of the area’s beautiful lakes, Breezy Point Resort is the perfect spot for you. The wedding specialists at Breezy Point will offer a guided tour of everything they have to offer and then sit down with you and talk about the things most important to you for your big day.

Whether it is location, scenery, the meal or the after party, they will help your vision come together and make sure you and your guests have a day to remember.

A new wedding pavilion at Antler’s White Birch Golf Course offers a gorgeous new spot with a touch of elegance for an exquisite outdoor ceremony surrounded by greenery and waterfalls.

The Pavilion can easily accommodate 200 for your ceremony or 100 for your reception. Your wedding photos will be breathtaking and admired for years to come with the scenery at Antler’s Pavilion as a

backdrop. When the sun sets, the twinkling chandeliers at the pavilion will complement the evening perfectly. A built-in sound system means you can listen to your own playlist created with music that has memories for the two of you or offers a crystal clear sound to listen to your band or iPod.

A wedding at the resort, in business for over a century, offers all the accommodations for your friends and family. They will have plenty to do at the resort during their stay while you enjoy the final preparations for your wedding. Feel like a trip to the spa to unwind before the big event? They can help with that, too. Besides Antler’s Pavilion, Breezy Point Resort has other locations suitable for exchanging your vows. The Point Lawn, at the edge of

Pelican Lake, can seat more than 300 people and the Breezy Point Conference Center is perfect for the guest list up to 500. The Breezy Belle is a paddle boat owned by the resort and is one more unique venue to consider. It is perfect for a rehearsal dinner or smaller wedding with a guest list up to 100.

For the wedding dance, Breezy Point has three different ballrooms: the Whitebirch, Minnesota and Lakeside, each with its own style to accommodate guests. Call Breezy Point Resort soon to tour everything they have to offer and lock in the details of your own perfect wedding. The helpful wedding staff at the resort will be there for all the planning, from beginning to end. You’ve thought about it your entire lives; now it’s time to make it happen.

2023 Weddings north | 5 Start your history together in the heart of Minnesota’s lake country. Breezy Point Resort provides the perfect setting for friends and family to gather and celebrate and offers ceremony and reception venues for groups from 20 to 450 guests. Sizes of these food possibilities range to serve 20 to 40 people.

Finally, sheet cakes can be made with one of three flavors, contain many choices for icing, design, and decorations to fit your theme, and also feed either 20 or almost 100 guests depending on the chosen size. Brainerd lakes area DESTINATION:

Having a destination wedding doesn’t have to mean coordinating air fare and full days of travel for all of your family and friends. Sometimes the perfect location isn’t that far away at all.

The checklist for a destination wedding includes an area that has accommodations for all of the parties on your guestlist, the resources to make the wedding of your dreams a reality, and bonus entertainment for downtime during the stay. The Brainerd lakes area fits the bill perfectly.

Surrounded by beautiful lakes and woods, home to celebrated dining and world renown resorts and golf courses, the area is only a half a day drive from anywhere in the state and those that neighbor it.

Whether your wedding style is rustic, country, formal or beachy, one of the many premier wedding venues in the area will be a perfect fit for the theme. Beautiful and elegant indoor spaces and scenic, breathtaking, outdoor spaces are all found nearby. A wedding on a beach can happen just as easily as one surrounded by the lush greenery of a picturesque award-winning golf course, or with a colorful wooded backdrop in the fall. The area offers an opportunity to make memories together, and a chance to combine a truly special event with a mini vacation.

Katelyn and Ben

Katelyn and Ben Welle come from the Fargo-Moorhead area. They knew they wanted to have their wedding in a place that wasn’t too far from home but still wanted a get-away feel for their friends and family. “We didn’t find anything in the cities that we really loved,” she said.

The two were familiar with the Brainerd lakes area. Katelyn had come with her family on vacation when she was young, and her husband had been to the area to play hockey. She said with friends and family in the Twin Cities and Fargo, Brainerd offered a nice meet in-themiddle space. After touring the Northern Pacific Event Space, and meeting with wedding staff at Grand View, they were sold.

“My husband loves to fish and golf, so we were interested in some place that offered those,” she said.

Katelyn and Ben were married in front of 200 friends and family last year on Memorial Day weekend.

The couple hosted a welcome party at the cantina on the water at Grand View and had the groom’s dinner on a Gull Lake cruise. “That was a highlight for our guests,” she said, “I would recommend that to anyone.”

2023 Weddings north | 13

- Katelyn Welle

Although it rained on the morning of the wedding, it cleared up in time for their ceremony. She says having their wedding in the lakes area was a win. “A lot of golf happened that weekend,” she laughs, and adds that everything was perfect. “I want to come back and celebrate my anniversary there.”

Whether you provide your friends and family a list of activities and things they can do on their own during downtime while they are in the area for your wedding, or schedule activities to do as a group, such as tee times for golf

or a fishing charter, there are plenty of local options no matter the season.

Besides the world renown golf courses, elegant spas, and pristine water ways, all of the resources needed for your wedding day can be found in the area. Local offerings from florists and bakeries can offer one-of-a-kind arrangements and tasty treats to complement your day.

Accommodations, from blocks of hotel rooms to cabins at an area resort, can be found in the area that fit every budget on your guestlist.

Dining outside of the ceremony can be everything from an upscale dinner or a scrumptious pizza buffet. Breweries, restaurants with award winning chefs, and pleasing indoor seating and outdoor patio dining can all be found here. Book a local caterer to create the perfect menu for the reception.

The Brainerd lakes area is the perfect place for a destination wedding to start your future with the one you love. Plan to come before the wedding and stay for the honeymoon.

WEDDING DAY PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

BY METRO CREATIVE

Few things document weddings more effectively than photographs. Carefully curated wedding albums and portraits hung on walls serve as daily reminders of a couple’s special day.

Photography is often left in the very qualified hands of professional photographers. However, couples can pitch in to make their photos really pop. These picture pointers from industry insiders can help couples put their best smile forward.

LEAVE AMPLE TIME

A carefully orchestrated timeline can ensure photos are the best they can be. Why? Because a couple who is relaxed and not overwhelmed will notice that attitude translates to their photographs. When planning wedding timelines, couples should leave ample opportunities for getting dressed, chatting with the wedding party and going through various photography settings to grab great photos, advise the experts at Martha Stewart.

PUT TOGETHER A SHORT LIST

The photographer will have his or her ideas of which shots to cover, but a couple with specific goals in mind should relay that information to their photographer. For example, if a grandparent is getting up in years, request some solo photos of that person so you can look back on happy times together. Certain couples want to be snapped posing with a beloved pet. Putting that on the list helps ensure it will happen.

ENLIST A FAMILY PHOTO COORDINATOR

If the photographer does not have his or her own assistant, recruit someone who is assertive to help wrangle everyone for the family shots. Attempt to get family photos when family members are relaxed but not too far rumpled by dancing or having a good time.

PLAY YOUR STYLE SAFE

A wedding day is not a time for the bride or groom to try a dramatic new style, according to photographer Amanda Lamb. Resist the urge for a daring cut or color. It’s also likely not the place to try out new facial hair or heavy makeup. A couple unaccustomed to the way they look may be shy in front of the camera.

DELVE INTO THE DETAILS

Prepare wedding details, like gowns, shoes, accessories, etc., in advance to save time once the photographer arrives, suggests Desi Mendoza, a pro from Dez and Tam Photography. Invest in a beautiful

hanger for the wedding gown as well, because you may want to photograph that on its own.

LEARN TO POSE

Couples can practice posing in front of mirrors to get a feel for body positions that put them in their best light. A photographer’s advice in regard to posture is invaluable as well. Create space between arms and the body and learn how to angle the body so you look your best.

Photos will capture wedding day memories forever. Couples can put themselves in the best positions for success by following some photography guidelines.

Full-Service Wedding Day Florist

Creating bold, beautiful, bountiful bouquets and floral designs for any occasion is all in a day’s work for Melissa Kay Krueger at Simply Rustic Floral Design in Crosslake. After opening its doors four years ago to serve Crosslake and surrounding lakes area, Simply Rustic Floral Design is already a staple full-service wedding, birthday, anniversary, funeral, and ‘just because’ destination florist because of Krueger’s exceptional customer service and pride in prioritizing her customers — especially her brides-to-be.

It all starts with a recommended scheduled consultation, which can be conducted either in person, on Zoom, or over the phone as Melissa can accommodate any need. Expect to discuss selected wedding-themed pictures or dedicated Pinterest boards to pick out details, elements and uniqueness.

“I love establishing a connection with each of my clients,” Krueger said. “That way, I can make a design that reflects their ideas and personality — and ultimately be something they love!”

As many factors and textures make up floral designs, you can trust Simply Rustic Floral Design to mention features and ideas needed within a bouquet as well as incorporate professional touches you didn’t know a centerpiece design entailed. Because they understand flowers are not cheap, Simply Rustic Floral Design will also introduce flowers that preserve the best during any wedding season and steer their clients away from varieties that have been known to cause mishaps on a bride’s special day, providing the best bang for your buck.

“As a mom myself, I tend to treat my bride-to-be clients as my own daughters,” Krueger explained. “So quality, time, effort, and priority are given … It’s truly what sets us apart.”

As Melissa loves what she does, you can expect her to work one-on-one with each client to tailor eye-catching florals that fit their unique personality and extend one more glance over to make sure everything is perfect before handing the florals over to the designated wedding party. If these aspects weren’t enough, Simply Rustic Floral Design also provides effective

communication concerning the status of all the floral arrangements requested before and on the special day.

“We take pride in knowing we are prioritizing our customers’ desires throughout the entire process,” Krueger said. “And, you get all of me, whether your wedding or event is indoor, outdoor, big or small. Simply Rustic Floral Design is an all-occasion florist that can accommodate anything.”

And that statement rings true as Simply Rustic always has a beautiful range of pre-made arrangements stocked within its cooler for holiday and ‘just because’ walkins, in addition to the 20-plus weddings the shop serves each year. Melissa also opens her shop to offer classes such as make-andtake succulent gardens and fresh-cut floral design guidance as another way to connect with future clients and the community while showcasing her experience, expertise and passion for flowers.

“It’s what gives us our uniqueness,” Krueger said. “Simply Rustic Floral Design is not your traditional cookie-cutter floral shop.”

Becca and Jason

Online dating. Some people swear by it and others don’t think it could possibly work. I was of the latter. Never in a million years did I think I would find the “man of my dreams” on a dating app. But God had other plans for me.

In the fall of 2020, I got an email alerting me to a new message on my eHarmony account. I’d had a free account for a few years but never really got into it, thinking it was a waste of time. I decided I might as well give it a try since it was 2020 and all. The message was from a man named Mike. I messaged him back and we chatted

for a few days. He was nice enough but all his questions and inquiries made me feel like I was at a job interview. There was no spark.

I looked at other profiles and remembered seeing this cute guy with a stoic expression and salt and pepper hair. The next day I got a message from a guy named Jason, Mr. Salt & Pepper Hair himself. We exchanged pleasantries and laughed when we discovered we had the same thing to eat that night: chicken and rice. The next day we chatted again, getting to know each other. After a few days, I realized talking to him was

effortless and easy. It was like we’d know each other for years. He was sweet, kind and thoughtful with a goofy sense of humor that matched mine. There was definite spark. Most importantly, he shared my same beliefs in Christ. Within a week, we talked on the phone for the first time. After that, we talked and texted almost everyday. We finally met in person after talking for a month. From the second we met, it was like we had hung out dozens of times. We laughed and chatted like two old friends. That night he asked me to be his girlfriend, which I happily said yes to.

Days and weeks turned to months of getting to know each other and meeting one another’s families. We discovered we liked similar things, like cheesy movies, old time music and antiques. We differed on stuff too, like his love of heavy metal music and my distaste of it because I can’t understand the lyrics. The more we got to know each other, the more I fell in love with him. I couldn’t believe I met this wonderful man who actually liked me for me. I continuously thanked God because I knew He had sent Jason to me.

After eight months of dating, while slow dancing under a projection of stars on the ceiling, Jason proposed, telling me he couldn’t imagine his life without me. I was completely shocked. I couldn’t stop asking, ‘Are you serious?’ He laughed and asked if that was a yes. I giggled and said ‘YES!’ Jason placed the ring on my finger and we danced the night away, laughing and crying happy tears together.

Within a few weeks, we had a date for our wedding — Aug. 27, 2022. We toured Arrowwood Lodge in Baxter and fell in love with the beautiful ballrooms with plenty of room for dancing. Knowing we both loved antiques and the old time era, we decided our wedding theme would be elegant vintage. I envisioned strings of pearls on every table, antique frames, lace, doilies, twinkling lights and candles everywhere. Coming from a family who loves decorating and crafts, I knew this would be a lot of work but also tons of fun.

We set to work. I found packages of pearl beads in different sizes at the Dollar Tree. We became regulars at thrift stores like Bargains on 7th, Goodwill and Common Goods, looking for any kind of candle holders, old cameras and books. I asked my mom, aunt and grandmother if they had anything we could use and we hit the jackpot. They found cut-glass candle holders from my great-grandmother, a pair of black high heels my grandmother wore in her 20s and two sterling

Caitlin and Grant

September 2006 is where our story really began.

We were in Mrs. Severson’s second grade class at Baxter Elementary School together. From reading to one another in the classroom to chasing each other on the playground, we were each other’s first love. We kept in touch throughout the rest of our elementary and middle school years, but nothing ever happened. Then, 9th grade rolled around and we had a few classes together. Our friendship grew into a relationship and we went to the homecoming dance together in October 2013. We needed some time apart and so our relationship ended at the end of the school year.

Once again, we stayed in touch throughout our sophomore and junior year but just stayed friends. Then our senior year came. We again had a class together, Outdoor Adventure, and we rekindled our love for one another.

Grant asked me to Christmas ball and we started dating shortly after that (Dec. 18, 2016). We supported each other throughout our senior year in our academics as well as our sporting events. We went to senior prom together in April 2017 and graduated high school together in June. Then it was off to

college. We did long distance for a year before I moved to a college closer to home and Grant. During our last year of college, we adopted our dog Chief together. We graduated college in May 2021. I graduated from the College of St. Scholastica with a nursing degree and Grant graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a double major in finance and professional sales. We bought a house together after graduation and started our careers in Duluth.

The Proposal

We visited friends in Colorado over my 23rd birthday in February. We spent the day sightseeing and went hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park. Grant proposed in front of the mountains in the park and I had absolutely no idea that it was happening! Feb. 12, 2022, was one of the happiest days of my life!

The Wedding

We planned a wedding in six months because why wait to marry the love of your life? We got married on Aug. 13, 2022, at Little Lazy Lodge in Remer, Minnesota. It was the best day of our lives and we are now forever Mr. and Mrs. Madison. We currently reside in Duluth but our goal is to come back and raise a family in the Brainerd lakes area.

chicken nuggets from McDonald’s. We always seem to get chicken nuggets at special moments and this one was one of the best.

We toured Linden Hill Historic Estate in Little Falls, and knew we had found our venue. We loved being able to stay in the historic mansion with our bridal party. Gwen Torfin, our day-of coordinator, was instrumental in the day running smoothly and kept everyone on schedule. Pastor Andrew Smith officiated the ceremony along the Mississippi River. During our unity ceremony, we combined glass pieces, which were then blown into a one-of-a-kind lamp by glassblower Steven Weagel. For the cocktail hour, I surprised Mike with an ax throwing cart from United States Axe. Our guests threw axes and played bags while enjoying popcorn from Goody’s Gourmet Treats and music by local musician Ted Feyder. Our beautiful flowers were done by Lily Grass Floral. Chef Mike’s Catering served an incredible BBQ buffet including beef brisket, chicken, pork, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, cornbread and honey butter. Naturally, Oscar was a part of our special day. He proudly walked down the aisle wearing a bow tie and was a very good boy during the reception. Mike’s cufflinks featured his photo, and a miniature replica of Oscar was placed on our cake with a dab of frosting on his nose. We highly recommend having a videographer, as the day goes by so quickly. King Gicalde Photography captured our wedding perfectly, and our video is something we’ll treasure forever. We still marvel at the fact it didn’t storm as forecasted, and instead, we were treated to a stunning lightning show off in the distance that seemed to match the music.

Mike and I met online, and his opener was, “That’s a handsome dog you’ve got there.”

Anyone who knows me knows that Oscar is so much more than just a dog to me; he’s my furchild. What Mike didn’t realize yet is that he’d eventually become a dog dad to Oscar.

We hit it off right away. Despite having very different personalities, our core values and beliefs aligned. By the time we had our first date, it felt like we already knew each other. We dated during the

pandemic, which meant a lot of at-home dates. Mike introduced me to “The Office’’ for the first time. For Christmas, I gave Mike a Dundie award for being “The Cheesiest.” Again, anyone who knows me knows that I love my cheese!

Mike says it didn’t take him very long to recognize we had a good thing. After almost a year of dating, Mike bought a ring, handcrafted a ring box and asked my parents for their blessing. He proposed on our anniversary trip to Duluth in December 2020, and after calling our family and friends, we celebrated with

More notable vendors include: Garrett Tetrick Photography, Party World, Party Time, Meraki Hair Studio, Cold Spring Bakery, makeup artists Katie and Anna Vreeland, Nicholas Thomas Entertainment, Charlie’s Pizza and A Needle Pulling Thread Alterations. Sharon Carlson baked a delicious kransekake that people are still talking about today. We honeymooned in Silver Bay, Duluth and enjoyed seeing the fall colors while hiking. When we returned home, we ate some chicken nuggets, and of course, shared a few with Oscar.

silver candelabras from my mom — just to name a few things. Jason asked his parents and they found an old accordion that was his grandmother’s and a couple of pearl necklaces from his aunt. I also asked my dad if we could use his 1955 Chevy Bel-Air car to ride in. We felt so blessed to have such personal items be a part of our special day.

Almost every night for 10 months while watching TV, I strung together pearl necklaces, totaling about 200. At the same time, my mother hand crocheted more than 25 doilies that were 15 inches wide for each centerpiece for our reception tables. She

also made my veil from material we got at Jo-Ann Fabrics, as well as sewed all the runners and chair back ribbons for each table.

To match our elegant vintage theme, I didn’t want to have an ordinary flower bouquet. I found pearl brooches, old pins and white flower petals and created a one-of-a-kind brooch bouquet. What really makes it special are the couple of old brooches I used that my grandmother wore when she was younger. I went dress shopping with my family and friends at Arlene’s Bridal. After trying on a couple of dresses, I found the perfect lace and tulle wedding dress that had a vintage yet modern feel. It made me feel like a princess. And it had pockets!

My fiance wasn’t a fan of cake so we decided on cheesecake. We went to the U.G.L.Y. Cheesecake Company and sampled more than two dozen delicious kinds before we chose one we both loved. Jason and I wrote a song for our wedding called, “My One and Only.” It talked about our journey — hoping to meet the one, wishing we found each other sooner but knowing God’s timing is perfect and how we were made for one another.

The big day finally came. I couldn’t wait for Jason to see me in my dress and see him in his new black suit. I was pretty composed until the moment I walked down the aisle. I teared up and told my dad, ‘I can’t believe I’m getting married!’ He chuckled, patted my arm and said, ‘He’s a good man, Bec.’

Did our day go perfectly? No. Are there things I wish I could change? Yes. But the only thing that truly mattered happened: I married the man God made just for me, a man who’s funny, charming and has a fierce love for me he only could have gotten from God — a man I met on an online dating site. A man who’s my one and only.

TRENDS & TIPS:

Dessert buffets continue to be a popular trend for couples looking to offer a variety of bite-sized sweets to their guests. Here are a few tips for planning the perfect dessert table: Be creative! Choose desserts that reflect your personality and are inspired by your own favorite treats.

Include a variety. Pick desserts in varied sizes, flavors and textures to give guests plenty to choose from. Using platters and cake stands of different sizes and heights will also add visual interest.

Consider the venue/season. Some desserts do better in outdoor settings than others – let your dessert caterer know where/when you will be serving so they can help you pick the best options.

Plan ahead. Give yourself enough time to schedule tastings/consults with potential dessert caterers to help you decide on your menu. We recommend booking 4-6 months out to ensure availability. Delegate. Make sure to designate helpers to pick up, set up and restock the dessert table. This could be a responsible friend/family member,

the dessert or on-site caterer, or a combination of both.

Have your cake (and eat it, too!)

While dessert tables are a great crowdpleaser, don’t forget to include a cutting cake so you don’t miss out on those great photo ops and sharing a special dessert made just for you as a couple.

Whether you’re looking for a large dessert table spread or just need a simple yet elegant cake, Knotty Pine Bakery is your lakes area resource for all things sweet. Our delicious menu includes everything from cakes to pies to doughnuts to hand-decorated sugar cookies and everything in between. Nontraditional weddings: From flower grandmas to hay bales with lace

If you have attended a wedding recently you may have been pleasantly surprised by some of the nontraditional aspects popping up. Not only are non-traditional spots for receptions fun to attend like historical buildings, family properties and locations that hold memories for the couple, but nontraditional roles are also happening — fathers of grooms being the best man, the best man being the best woman, or maid of honor being man of honor, grandmothers as flower girls, and even family pets as part of the

wedding party. The list goes on and on. Janene and Dave Imgrund were married at BIR. “From the bridesmaids’ fancy shirts of our race cars, to the officiant, instead of saying, ‘you may kiss the bride,’ said, ‘you may race the bride!’” FYI: The bride, in her 1978 Chevy C10 farm truck, won the race!

Katie Deblock was married in a field and had hay bales covered with vintage lace for guest seating.

Teerza Schultz decided to have flower grandmas instead of traditional flower girls. The grandmas loved it and took

their role very seriously. Not only are these changes different from what has been considered tradition, they are memorable. In the recent years of the wedding surge, it is fun to do a little something out of the ordinary and personalize the day with aspects of what is truly part of the couple.

Local wedding coordinator Gwen Torfin had a 1920s theme for her own wedding. “Themes are really fun,” Gwen said. “We held the wedding at a drive-in theater and played “Casablanca.” Guests dressed up and we had a huge cocktail hour.”

28 | 2023 Weddings north

Another local wedding coordinator Jaci Aho said, “Hanging installations are a big deal right now. Floral installations are not necessarily new, but they are showing up more frequently as they are such great statement pieces and can really transform the venue and ‘wow’ your guests. Baby’s breath is also making a comeback and at first I wasn’t a fan of this,” she laughed. “But it’s being used in new ways and fun in white bouquets as well as popping up in Boho styles, and now I’m totally on board.” Both coordinators love the grand entrance combined with the first dance.

“There’s a nice flow to the couple going right into their dance before dinner,” Jaci mentioned. “The attention is already on them from the entrance and it gives grandparents who may not be staying after dinner, a chance to see this part of the reception.”

Wedding bouquets are not what they used to be. Some brides are opting out completely, others are changing it up with a bridal clutch, feather bouquet, vintage fan and even dream catchers. One bride made a lottery ticket bouquet which was tossed out to the crowd after the wedding.

Personally, as a food and beverage coordinator, it’s fun to see all the non-traditional aspects couples are implementing in their wedding plans. The days of the big three tier cake are gone, in many cases replaced with a small cake for the partners to cut for photos, and then something fun for their guests. Fun trends include:

ice cream and/or ice cream sandwiches; cupcakes; cheesecake

s’mores packages (Ziploc with a graham cracker, chocolate and marshmallow) to take to an outdoor fire pit

mini doughnuts where guests pick their own toppings (and who doesn’t love the smell of freshly made doughnuts?) and of course the doughnut wall; assortments of small bites including lemon bars, brownies, cookies, cake pops.

Passed appetizers may include such things as a chicken and waffle bite (guests tend to light up when they see this appetizer) or elote corn fritters which is street corn in a tasty fried corn batter. The wedding dinner is also showing up in new ways. Taco, pasta and burger bars, pizza buffets, and family style service are ways couples are changing things up and including personal foodie favorites. Even the plated sit-down dinner has changed from the once standard selections of chicken or beef to include walleye, short ribs, brisket and vegetarian options such as mushroom ravioli. The food has become much more a part of the overall experience for weddings than it once was. No longer do you go to weddings knowing you are most likely going to have a dry piece of chicken and some tasteless vegetables. Now, you never know what incredible dish you may be trying.

Late night food options have replaced the days of guests leaving hungry and hoping to get to the nearest McDonald’s before it closes for the night. Late night food can be many things — most popular being pizzas, mashed potato bars, pretzel bars with things to dip them in and walking tacos. Of course, other options more personalized to the couple are great selections as well including corn dogs with sauce options for the couple who met at the State Fair and chicken strips because really, who doesn’t love chicken strips?

Couples have implemented things to entertain guests as well. Beer Pong, trivia and kids’ corners for weddings which include many children are all entertaining. Gwen mentioned a wedding that included ax throwing during the cocktail hour.

Centerpieces or table décor has moved from candles to games for guests such as Rubik’s Cube or canning jars with colored marbles or even candy in the colors of the wedding. If you can think of it, it’s all fair game.

It’s beginning to seem like the nontraditional is becoming traditional. Watch for these and other fun nontraditional trends at the next wedding you attend.

Beautifully done by the professionals at Reed’s Bakery in Crosslake, the cake stands as a vision of elegance, the perfect dessert to a most magnificent day.

Or maybe cake isn’t your thing. Today’s brides have a variety of options when it comes to the reception centerpiece. You can choose traditional wedding cake, themed cakes, cupcakes, doughnuts, even cookies or bars. Whatever you decide, Salena Snow, the bakery’s manager, will make sure your wedding dessert is created to your personal specifications.

Reed’s Bakery has the most delicious toppings and fillings to ensure your wedding dessert not only looks sumptuous, but tastes as lovely as it looks. Select your favorites when you and your partner are treated to a complimentary cake tasting. Marble, chocolate and white cakes are their specialty, and among the most popular choices.

If you are choosing a wedding cake as your centerpiece, after making your flavor selections, the next step is deciding how you would like your cake decorated. “Naked” cakes are popular. This delicious cake with little or no frosting and a minimalistic look is perfect for a rustic or simple wedding. Reed’s Bakery can also do highly specialized decorations from a picture you supply. Creating an Earth-friendly wedding An organic occasion:

is shifting to more practical and environmentally friendly ways to sustain our lives. We buy local produce and cut down on the amount of plastics in our homes. We challenge ourselves to plant more trees and ride our bikes. We compost our food waste and use glassware instead of one-use wraps. We are making incredible shifts in our way of thinking about our everyday routines, so why not extend that train of thought into your special day?

Themes and colors found in nature have been used in a variety of ways, being seen in the most high-end weddings to more intimate and boho chic ceremonies.

Here in the northwoods, there are plenty of beautiful outdoor venues that will complete your nature-inspired dream wedding. However, if you want to make your day unique while keeping the health of the planet in mind, here’s a few tips and tricks that may interest you.

Decorations

Ribbon and tulle is a thing of the past and just ends up in a landfill. Lean on natural colors and textures such as wood, stone and greenery to spruce up your wedding day. Not only will guests feel like they are connecting to nature but they get to know your decorations are not contributing to unnecessary waste.

Top Notch Tablescapes

Instead of ordering table runners from your favorite online store, reach out to a local artist or roll up your sleeves to create naturally-dyed table linens to match your theme. Dying fabric from vegetable scraps is a fun and sustainable way to put a little love into your tablescape. I highly recommend reading “The Wild Dyer” by Abigail Booth as a guide to dying your own fabrics. To top it off, centerpieces can be used out of natural materials to fit your theme. Pine tree branches, prairie grasses or fresh native flowers will make your guests feel like they are walking through nature’s beauty.

Bare Chairs

Organic brides don’t want to sit on stiff bleached linens. Ditch those chair covers and go with something a little more earth friendly. Evergreens are for more than just holiday decoration. Use beautifully-scented pine, spruce and cedar branches to create wispy chair swags. Incorporate some of your handdyed linens for a pop of color or go all natural with bare willow branches and white native flowers. Flowers can be locally-sourced from your favorite farm and greenhouse rather than using silk or plastic.

Fabulous Favors

This is where brides can really shine. There are so many interesting favor ideas that get your guests thinking green but also admiring your creativity. Locally sourced beeswax candles look beautiful on tablescapes but also make adorable favors. If candles don’t make the cut, ask a local beekeeper to safely fill mini jars of honey for your guests. Follow it up with custom labels with a cute saying like “Love is so sweet.” Some additional ideas include incorporating flower seeds, herbs or tea. One of my favorite ideas is a bride that made her own homemade jam and gave it away in cute, reusable jars. This is how you let your guests know how much you appreciate them. Take it to the next level.

There are so many ways you can incorporate nature into your special day. There is no better way to make a nod to the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” than to incorporate organic colors, the smell of pine trees or plan a locally-sourced menu. Your guests will surely be impressed.

Cragun’s Resort – It’s not ‘status quo’ there any longer

Cragun’s has undergone many renovations in the last couple of years — from their $14 million golf course renovation to a full remodeling of their lodge style hotel rooms; they couldn’t be more excited for the future of their resort and their golf courses. Cragun’s is looking forward and planning for future trends and creating a reasonable package and pricing structure to fit the current needs. It’s not status quo around there any longer.

They offer more than just weddings. Recently, Cragun’s added two new inclusive wedding packages: Elopement and Brunch. They will host bridal shower brunches, bachelor and bachelorette parties, bridal party golf outings and chipping contests for the wedding. The one thing they are most excited for this year is the newly renovated bridal suites. They are being renovated and are truly going to be beautiful, cozy spaces for wedding parties to relax before they say “I do.”

Wedding and Event Manager Nicole Marquart said, “I wanted to provide an option that would alleviate the stress of all the details that planning a wedding entails. Most recently, we have done a few “true” elopements of two people where they just get away, enjoy the fish houses, the restaurants onsite and the Cragun’s Resort experience.”

Cragun’s offers its luxury Gull Lake Cruise yacht, the North Star, which can accommodate up to 100 people. It’s a perfect opportunity for couples to host a rehearsal dinner, intimate wedding or a

recreational experience for their wedding weekend.

Their facilities are open year-round, with many options for hosting ceremonies and receptions. Summer weddings can incorporate several of their outdoor venues with easy access to the main lodge in case of rain. Popular venues include the North Beach event lawn under the willows overlooking Gull Lake and the Pavilion Patio at Cragun’s Legacy Courses.

Winter weddings exude their own charm with inviting fireplaces, intimate candlelight and seasonal hot beverages, as well as ice skating, dog sled rides, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. In the winter, the dining room is transformed into a beautiful reception space overlooking Gull Lake and lakeshore rooms with ample space to accommodate larger weddings.

Cragun’s offers the perfect venue for every season, size and budget with reasonable packages and pricing structures to fit your needs.

However you imagine it, the Northland Arboretum, located in Brainerd, Minnesota, can help you create a personalized wedding venue.

The Arboretum was voted No. 1 for the Best Wedding and Party Venue in the Best of Brainerd Lakes contest by the Brainerd Dispatch. It is a rustic wedding venue in an idyllic setting. Tucked in the heart of Brainerd and Baxter, it provides the beauty of the Arboretum’s natural landscape in a unique way to connect to the outdoors for your special day.

Multiple spaces throughout the grounds can be adapted for special occasions, making it easy for couples to tailor the venue to their vision. Beauty and emotions that will last a lifetime

Well-known for their reliability, quality workmanship and expertise in creating one-of-a-kind custom bridal sets and engagement rings, E.L. Menk Jewelers has been a trusted source for thousands of wedding couples since 1979.

Store owner Ed Menk and his experienced staff have never lost sight of their commitment to offering quality fine jewelry to Brainerd lakes area customers along with personalized service that is second to none. The staff has not only been with the company for many years, together they collectively have more than 100 years of experience in the jewelry and diamond industry. They also know that purchasing a ring for an engagement or a wedding is one of the important expenditures in a couple’s life. And it’s a decision that will be better made with the knowledge and guidance of an expert.

“We enjoy helping brides and grooms find the perfect wedding ring for their special occasion and have options for every budget,” Menk confirmed. “Our wedding bands are made of the best materials and the highest craftsmanship and we offer only stones cut to maximum brilliance. Our wide selection of diamond rings include solitaires, ideal square diamonds, engagement rings, colored diamonds, custom designed bands and many more. For couples looking to match an existing ring, our design team can custom create a single or double wedding band that matches their ring beautifully.”

A locally-owned and operated business, E.L. Menk Jewelers’ selection includes beautiful bracelets, necklaces and rings that are as classic and unique as their customers are. They also offer couples diversity in jewelry choices and the largest collection of Canadianmined and cut diamonds in the area. To view and appreciate the true brilliance and sparkle of a diamond, and know that it is the right diamond for the occasion, brides and grooms find they benefit from working one-on-one with someone who is also a part of their community.

If a wedding proposal is in the future, E.L. Menk can take the pressure off grooms-to-be by offering a unique service that helps them with the decision-making process. After working to select the best diamond for the future groom’s budget and vision, the selected diamond is then mounted in a simple solitaire setting. This works to preserve the magic and excitement of the proposal, yet gives the bride-to-be an option of returning the solitaire setting and then selecting a new setting that better fits her style and taste.

“The times have changed, but we haven’t,” Menk noted. “We have always been focused on providing the best service and expertise possible right within the walls of this building. In our

jewelry workshop we not only create fine jewelry, we perform quality repairs and maintenance to keep your items looking like new. All of our production and repair work is done onsite by my expert staff members who specialize in repairs, custom jewelry production and appraisals. Our customers’ satisfaction is always in the forefront of our minds and we continually work to ensure that everyone leaves this store with a smile that sparkles as brightly as the diamonds we sell.”

As E.L. Menk Jewelers celebrates its 44th year in business, Menk credits his company’s longevity to consistently offering excellence in customer service, professionalism, integrity along with cultivating long-term relationships with the customers who are now considered friends. In an era where online deals tempt buyers with cheap prices on inferior products, he also points out that there is no substitute for a trusted relationship with a hometown jeweler. “We’ve been here a long time and we will continue to be here for years to come,” Menk concluded. “We are proud to be able to use our knowledge and vast selection of stones and settings to assist brides and grooms-to-be in making a selection that not only reflects their relationship’s beauty and emotions, but also one that that will last a lifetime.
