Medansh has developed a gaming app that he named has ‘Let There Be Light’. In this game players have to build virtual cities by creating factories and farms. The interesting point here is the players must focus on environment and air quality too. The app has other aspects like considering renewable energy, solar and wind energy.

Medansh has presented the complex issues like environmental degradation and using renewable energy in a simple form in his game. It highlights the importance of accounting for pollution and environmental degradation while building cities, and at the same time looking at people needs. Medansh shared his game with Satya Nadella, Microsoft of CEO, at a student developers meeting in India. He was very impressed with Medansh’s gaming app and he even mentioned about this app in a speech. He said, “I met an eight-year-old, and this is perhaps the time where I felt the most

Medansh asked Satya Nadella how he could have his job one day in Microsoft. Satya Nadella replied, “You are already ambitious beyond being the next CEO. The game has the sensibility that all of us need”

RAILWAYS!

C

hildren are always thrilled to travel by train. What if they get a chance to be part of railways? That’s what has happened in Budapest, capital of Hungary. In the outskirts of Budapest, there is a railway line that is almost entirely operated by children. This railway line, earlier known as ‘Pioneer’s Railway’ was built by communist authorities between 1948 and 1950. The authorities wanted children to learn to work in teams. Pioneer’s Railway was later renamed as ‘children’s Railway.

The construction of the railway line started on April 11, 1948.In the first phase of construction - three stations and a railway track stretched for three kilometres were built in just 66 days! The second phase was completed a year later and the final phase finished in August, 1950. It was opened on 20th August 1950. This railway line was closed temporarily during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and again reopened on 3 February 1957. How children are trained to take up the job?

760 mm (2 ft 5 15/16 in)

The children go through a four month training program and also clear exams similar to adult railway workers. The station master, crew chief and certainly, the train drivers are adults.

These children help transport tourists and other passengers travel along the route through tunnels and over hills. It takes around 45 minutes to reach the destination. Where does the train go? This train stops at seven stages, and all these seven stops are famous recreation spots – Csilleberc (Adventure Park) , Normafa ( beautiful landscape), Janos Hill( highest peak in Budapest), Vadaspark(zoo) and Huvosvolgy( home to a famous restaurant, Nancsi Neni). Csillebérc, where the Challangeland zip-line is located; Normafa, known for its beautiful scenery; János Hill, the highest peak in Budapest; Vadaspark, home to a charming zoo; and Hüvösvölgy, the site of the popular restaurant called Náncsi Néni, are the most favorite stops.

NO! TO JUNK FOOD SAY

T

oday children love to eat pizza, cheese, chips, ice creams, burgers and many such foods rather than healthy foods like vegetables and fruits. Eating junk foods once in a while is alright, but binging on junk food is isn’t alright. Too much of junk food will not only lead to weight gain, but might have serious health issues in later life.

The digestive system breaks the carbohydrates into sugar (glucose) and releases it into the blood stream. Accordingly, the pancreas release insulin that is needed to transport sugar to all cells of the body. When all the sugar is absorbed, the sugar levels in the blood decrease. Then pancreas release another hormone called glucagon. This hormone tells the liver to start using stores sugars in the body. When one eats normal healthy diet, the blood sugar levels stay normal, but in case of junk food, because of high amount of carbohydrates, there is sharp increase and decrease in blood sugar levels. Frequent increase sug and decrease in blood sugar will disturb insulin production in the dis body and this causes type bod diabetes. 2d

Do You

Know ?

Generally, junk foods are high in carbohydrates (more calories) and have less nutrition. When children eat substitute junk food in place of regular diet, it will lead to poor nutrition, poor health and increases body weight (obesity).

OBESITY CREATES respiratory problems too. It causes respir shortness of breath or wheezing with little exertion. It also develops sleep apnea. This is a condition in which sleep is frequently disrupted by shallow breathing and asthma. Eating too much of junk food also effects memory and learning in children. Many times it leads to depression also. When one eats junk foods, some bacteria residing in the mouth produce acids. These acids destroy enamel on the teeth and finally cause dental cavities JUNE 16

The term bicycle was coined in 1860s in France.

T

he credit for first bicycle, though it was made in wood, goes to Comte Mede de Sivrac of France in the year 1790. In 1816, a German, Baron Karl von Drais de Sauerbrun, improved the first model by introducing a steering mechanism. However, the credit for first modern bicycle made in 1867 goes to Pierre and Ernest Michaux. The father and son together operated a company that made carriages in Paris. Over the years, modern bicycles have further evolved and are now available in different shapes and sizes. Take a look at some of the most amazing bicycles found around the world.

The POWER of

Silence

L

ong time ago, there lived an old man in a beautiful house. All his grown up children were staying in different cities. Every year, the old man’s grand children visited him during holidays. It was again vacation time and the old man was making preparations for his grand children’s visit. He cleaned the house, rearranged the household items and also mowed the garden. The next day, his grand children arrived and he received them happily. After a while the children started playing outside. The old man suddenly remembered his watch. It was his favourite watch gifted by his wife. He went into the house and looked for the watch. But he couldn’t find it anywhere. The children noticed him looking sad and asked him what had happened.

The old man said, “Dear Children! I lost the precious watch gifted by your grandmother before her death. I searched everywhere. That’s my favourite watch. I cannot bear losing it.” The old man was on tears. One child said, “Oh! Grandpa! Please don’t cry. We will find the watch. Do you remember where you saw it the last time?” The old man replied, d, “I saw it when I was cleaning g the barn.” After lunch, the children dren started searching the barn. It was full of waste items and broken ken furniture. They looked for the watch in every nook and corner. ner. Alas! They couldn’t find the watch. tch. The children were very ery disappointed. Suddenly, enly, one grandson said, “I have ve an idea, you all wait here. ere. Don’t make any noise.”

That boy went in to the barn again and sat still for 15 minutes. He then rushed out happily shouting, “Grandpa, I found the watch.” The little boy said,” I sat silently in the barn. After a while, I heard the ‘tick, tick’ sound of your watch. Here it is.” The old man was very happy. He hugged the boy and thanked him. This is the power of silence. When we stayy calm,, we will find solution to every problem.

How are

MatchSticks made?

A

match stick is a small stick of wood or strip of cardboard with a solidified mixture of flammable chemicals deposited on one end. When that end is struck on a rough surface, the friction generates enough heat to ignite the chemicals and produce a small flame. How are Matchsticks Made? • Wood used to make matchsticks must be porous enough to absorb various chemicals, and rigid enough to withstand the bending forces.

• Once the matchsticks are formed, they are soaked in ammonium phosphate, which is a fire retardant and is left to dry.

• The tip contains a mixture of phosphorus sesquisulfide and potassium chlorate. The tip also contains powdered glass and that increases the friction and control the burning rate.

• During manufacture, the striking ends of the matchsticks are dipped in hot paraffin wax. This provides a small amount of fuel to transfer the flame from the burning chemicals on the tip to the matchstick itself. Once the paraffin burns off, the ammonium phosphate in the matchstick prevents any further combustion.

• Animal glue that is used in the tip has a dual purpose: It binds the materials and serves as extra fuel.

• Wood is cut, into small matches.

File 1. White pine and aspen are two common woods used for making match sticks. 2. Modern “safety match” was introduced to the public in 19th century by Swedish scientist Gustaf Erik Pasch. 3. The hobby of collecting match-related items, such as match covers and matchbox labels, is known as phillumeny.

Colour ILLUSION Are the squares inside the blue and yellow squares all the same colour? The smaller squares inside the blue and yellow are all the same colour. They seem to be different as we perceive a colour differently depending on the adjacent colour.

Football Field Duration

The football field is 100 -120 yards long and 50-100 yards wide. At each end of the field (100 yards apart) are goal lines.

Generally the duration of the game is divided into two equal

periods of 45 min minutes n unless the terms are dec decided c on mutual content of two o teams.

Choosing the right ball For 9 year olds and under, the idle football ‘size 3’. For children less than 10 and 11’s, ‘Size 4’ ball will be more suitable.

C

hildren love playing with balls. Little ones gain many benefits by throwing, catching, kicking and dribbling balls. These activities improve a child’s motor skills, hand-eye coordination and timing. Now, the next step to a child is to start learning organized sports for better physical and mental growth.

Doknowyou? 'Sheffield Football Club' was the first food ball club founded in the world in the year 1857. In India, football was introduced by the Britishers in 1848 and the first foot ball club in India was known as ‘‘Dalhousie Club'.

Football is one type of organized sport that a child will enjoy playing and learning too. It is a team sport and players try to score goals by passing and dribbling or kicking the ball into the opponent’s goal net, outwitting the defending goalkeepers.

Learning the game Every football session will begin with warm-up drill and agility exercises, which prepare the child’s body and mind for the game. The coaches teach the game step by step using age appropriate techniques. So if the child is interested to learn the game, elders must surely encourage and support the child in all the ways.

SCIENCE How does a PLANT ‘DRINK’ WATER? Water is very essential for plants to grow. Let’s find out how a plant drinks water with a simple science experiment.

What

happens? When we water the plants, plants drink water through their roots .This water travels up the stem of the plant into the leaves and flowers where it makes food. When we cut the flower, it no longer has roots, but the stem of the flower drinks up the water and provides it to the flower. Here the water rises up the stem against gravity. This ability of a liquid to flow against gravity is known as capillarity.

Things you Need • Four/Five plastic glasses • Food colours • Freshly cut white roses with stems

Instructions Take Four/Five plastic glasses. Fill them half with water and add little food colour (red, blue, green, yellow and pink) to each glass of water. Then, place some freshly cut white roses in each of the cups of coloured water. Now wait patiently and observe the progress. It may take as long as 24 hours for the coloured water to work its way up to the white petals.

Scientist Do you know who invented a light bulb? Well! It is Thomas Alva Edison. He is an American inventor and was born in February 1847. He singly or jointly held a world record for 1,093 patents. He also created world’s first industrial laboratory. He was

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” just 22 years old and was working as a telegrapher, when he filed his first patent for the device ‘Electrographic Vote Recorder’. Edison was partly deaf because of scarlet fever he suffered in childhood. He just had 3 years of formal schooling and later he was taught at home. As a child he was very imaginative and curious. In later days, Edison worked hard with determination

to reach his goals. He just slept for 4 hours a day. He would work continuously for 72 hours when he was about to complete an experiment. Other than light bulb, his major inventions include phonograph and the motion-picture camera.

Why PLANTING TREES is important?

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

JUNE 5

rees contribute to the environment in many ways. They providee oxygen, improve air quality, conserve water, preserve soil and support life. On the whole, they increase quality of life by creating natural habitats. To satisfy the growing demands of modern lifestyles, people are destroying too many trees. This act is in turn destroying the environment. Planting trees is the only way to save our planet earth. Planting trees is important because they are renewable, biodegradable and recyclable. An average size tree creates oxygen sufficient for a family of four. Planting trees around buildings and homes can reduce cost of air-conditioning up to 50 percent. Every year ‘World Environment Day’ is celebrated on June 5 to raise awareness to protect nature and save our Earth. It is organized by United Nations Environment Programme. This day was celebrated
