Use Water Smartly

W

ater covers 71% of earth’s surface and remaining part is land. Water is mainly found in oceans and other large water bodies. Though water covers major part of our earth, only a small quantity of it is pure and the rest is salty. Pure water is used for drinking purpose.

World Environment Day June 5

Water is a natural healer. Drinking lots of water everyday keeps one fit and strong. One must drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water every day. Use water carefully. Do not waste water. A person cannot live without water for more than a week. Today water pollution is also a major problem. Some things like detergents, oils, insecticides, food waste and garbage that human beings are carelessly throwing away are contaminating the water in lakes, rivers, seas and oceans. All the waste should be disposed carefully to keep the water clean and usable.

SAVE

Do not leave the tap water running when you are brushing your teeth.

Water used to wash vegetables and fruits can be used for plants.

The P roud Monkey Listen

1

Once upon a time, some sailors set sail on their boat to visit a faraway country. One of the sailors, Gavin, brought his pet monkey along with him. One morning, when the boat was in the middle of the sea, a big storm turned the boat upside down.

06

june 16

2 All the sailors and the monkey fell into the water. The monkey could not swim and it tried to get hold of something to save itself. Just then, a dolphin came and lifted the monkey out of water. Soon, they reached an island and the monkey jumped onto the shore. Then, the dolphin asked the monkey, “Do you know this place?”

3

“Yes, the king of this island is my friend,” replied the monkey. The dolphin knew that nobody lived on the island. So dolphin said, “Oh! Is that so? Now you can ask the help of your friend to get back home.” The dolphin swam away. The monkey shouted, “Hey! Wait!” But the dolphin did not stop. Now, the monkey understood that it is alone in the island.

ports are very important for children. Children will learn and develop many physical and mental skills while playing. Introducing the child to organized sports like tennis, football and so on needs some preparation. By the time a child is five years old, the child learns to run, jump, kick and throw a ball to certain extent. Now they have to sharpen their skills and slowly learn complex activities.

What must parents do? Every child is naturally active. So parents must take advantage of this fact and work on it. They must make sure that the child remains active through the day in a structured manner as mentioned below: • Children must get at least 60 minutes of physical activity under adult supervision. • Children must get at least 60 minutes of free play. • Children must not be inactive for more than an hour except while resting /sleeping. Your child needs to participate in fun and challenging activities to develop required skills and coordination techniques for organized sports. Make sure to give your child a healthy and balanced diet to keep him/ her fit and strong. Note: Introducing child to organized sport without understanding the fitness of the child will make it difficult for the child and may even discourage child’s future participation in sports.

For strong and supple wrists and fingers Fingers and wrist need to be supple and flexible for smooth and problem free writing. The following activities aim at developing fine motors skills for the strength and flexibility of the wrist and fingers.

Activity -

1

Get some plastic clay, also called play dough. Make different shapes from it. You can use two or three different colours and form shapes and join them to form different forms like – you can make the head and hands of a man with one colour and the trunk with another, legs with another and join these to form the shape of a man.

2

Activity Place your hand on a piece of paper. Trace out the shape using a pencil or pen. Ask the child to fill it with colours or buttons or peas etc. Later ask the child to place his hand on a sheet of paper and trace out the shape and then fill it similarly or use colours to fill it.

Activity -

3

Mix water colours or poster colours on a plate or bowl. Ask the child to dip fingers in the colour and paint different shapes using his fingers. He can make the shape of a flower drawing a circle in the middle and drawing the shapes of petals around. Ask the child to experiment with different shapes. Since the child finds it easy to use his fingers and there is no need to control the movement of a brush, the child will enjoy the activity.

Science

Blowing Bubbles! Blowing bubbles is fun, isn’t it? Do you know that you can make bubbles solution on your own at home? Read on to know how to make bubbles. Enjoy blowing. Pop!

What You Need • Liquid dish soap • Distilled water or tap water • 2 table spoons of sugar • straw

What to do Take 6 cups of water into one container and add liquid dish soap into the water. Slowly stir it until the soap gets mixed completely. Add sugar and again stir the solution. You can use this solution immediately to make bubbles. But to make better bubbles leave the solution for a night. Dip the straw in the solution. Now slowly pull it out, wait for a few seconds and then blow. Your saop bubble is ready!

Why does a bubble pop? A bubble is just air that is wrapped in soap and water (soap film). The outside and inside surfaces of a bubble contain soap molecules (small particles in soap). A thin layer of water lies between the two layers of soap molecules. The soap and water together hold the air inside. A bubble pops when the water trapped in between the layers of soap evaporates.

Bringing Up

Happy Children

A

happy child is what everybody wants at school and at home. A child’s overall development happens when cognitive skills, emotional skills, social skills and physical skills are all equally developed. A child can build these skills by his own experiences only. Young children learn by doing. So elders must make sure they get a chance to learn through right experiences at school and at home.

A happy child prefers to spend the time developing the following qualities rather than being merely bookish. Creativity

Critical thinking

Motivation Perseverance Curiosity Enthusiasm Kindness Optimism Fairness Confidence Cooperation Generosity Honesty Character

14

june 16

As the new academic year has begun, children are ready to learn many new things at school and of course have fun too. Children should be encouraged to actively use all five senses to learn: seeing, touching, smelling, hearing and tasting. The more meaningful an experience, the more often a child will do it again and again. Each time an experience repeats, the child begins to build confidence and competence. So the better communication between the parents and the teachers, the more the chances a child will learn confidently without any confusion. Positive experiences are always fun, age appropriate and encouraging. They help the child learn to play with others, benefit from good adult role models and develop new skills. Teachers and parents together must make sure that a child has fun, loves to learn at school and at home and always stays fit and healthy.

Hobbies

Encouraging Hobbies Developing hobbies in children at an early age is important for their social and emotional development. It also creates a positive impact on the self esteem and self confidence of a child. Hobbies will inculcate discipline and help in overall development of the child. For young children, collecting toys is an interesting hobby. They will enjoy collecting toys of different shapes and sizes. Little girls love collecting Barbie dolls. Similarly, boys will find collecting toy cars interesting. Whatever is the hobby, children must seriously learn to stick to that hobby till certain period of time. They should keep their toys safely in a box and should not scatter them everywhere. Otherwise, the toys might get lost or broken and all the fun in collecting will also be lost.

Ruth Handler is the creator of Barbie doll. The first Barbie doll was introduced in both blonde and brunette in March 1959. Ruth got inspired by his little daughter Barbara’s interest and love towards fashion dolls. “My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices.”

Cheetah

Listen

Cheetah is the world’s fastest land animal. It is also known as hunting leopard. While running, cheetah uses its tail to steer like a rudder of a boat. Cheetahs are mostly found in eastern and southwestern Africa. Very few of them can be seen living in Iran. Cheetahs are the only big cats that hunt during the day.

Woolly Mammoth Have you seen ‘Ice Age Movie’? How was the big woolly mammoth? It was huge and amazing. Isn’t it? Well, this big woolly mammoth is an extinct relative of today’s elephants. Mammoths lived during the ice age period and are believed to have died because of change in weather conditions. They were herbivores and ate leaves, bushes, willow and fir. It is believed that they ate around 700 pounds of grass and leaves each day!

• A cheetah has 2000-3000 spots on its body • Today we can find fewer than 10,000 cheetahs in the wild, far less than 1,00,000 cheetahs a hundred years ago • The tusks of mammoths were very long, nearly 5 meters. Whoa! Mammoths used these tusks for fighting and digging in the snow
