Brampton Library's Springdale Branch is one of four winners of the Ontario Library Association's 2019 New Library Building Awards. The awards were presented on July 10, 2019 in Ottawa, at the Annual Institute on the Library as Place Conference. The other three recipients in this category were Hamilton Public Library's Binbrook Branch, Toronto Public Library's Albion Branch and Vaughan Public Libraries' Civic Centre Resource Library. “Newly-built libraries today reflect the strong desire for public places that instill a sense of community pride and are, at the same time, highly flexible and functional spaces,” commented Shelagh Paterson, executive director, Ontario Library Association.

Brampton Library branches are busier than ever, with thousands of residents visiting daily to borrow items, attend programs and use our services. This fall, we will open our new South West Branch Library at 8405 Financial Drive. We are excited to introduce you to a new streamlined concept and be part of this busy retail space. In July we were honoured to receive a New Library Building Award for Springdale Branch Library at the Ontario Library Association's Annual Institute on the Library As Place conference in Ottawa. Awarded once every three years, to encourage and showcase excellence in the architectural design and planning of libraries in Ontario, the jury cited Springdale's connection to the local environment and community. We are thrilled to have this recognition of how perceptions of public libraries have changed. During Ontario Public Library Week, please join us on Sunday, October 20 for our annual Customer Appreciation Day, held in all of our branches, from 12:00 - 4:00 pm. Over a free cup of coffee, we invite you to chat with Library Board members and staff about what we have done to the mid-way point in our 2017 – 2021 Strategic Plan and complete our survey. Show Your Talent
In the last issue of inspiring connections, we shared the story of Librarian Ben Smeets, who worked in partnership with TRCA and Louise Arbour Secondary School students to 3D print models of turtles, paint them and place them in safe nesting places to attract real turtles.
Individuals and groups are invited to apply for free exhibit space in our branches. Click Brampton Library Community Galleries under the Join In tab on our website to find out more.
We are thrilled to share that this project is a big success. One of the TRCA project coordinators has been asked to speak about the project at the 17th Annual Symposium on the Conservation and Biology of Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles and there is potential to share as a case study to educate others about strategies for turtle conservation.
