Terms of the sale are cash. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. The auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids. All cattle are to be paid for by the purchaser immediately after the sale and will not be released until settlement has been made, unless prior arrangements have been made.Cattle will not be transferred until paid for in full. The sale will be conducted in accordance with the complete Suggested Sale Terms & Conditions as set forth by the American Simmental Association. Announcements: All announcements at the sale by the owners or sale staff will take precedence over statements in the catalog. Welcome to the 2012 fall edition of the Magnolia Classic, “A Southeastern Connection to the World of Fleckvieh”. It is a pleasure for Mary Cheek and me, along with Alex and the Little Creek crew, to open our doors to our guests. We invite you to come early to look at cattle and to visit with fellow cattlemen. Moving The Magnolia Classic from January to October presented some significant challenges. Perhaps the most significant challenge was assuming the management of the sale. With the help and encouragement of many, especially Fred Schuetze and the entire Buzzard Hollow Ranch office crew, we will be ready. I am sure there will be bumps in the road, but we will smooth the bumps as we move on to future sales. Much of the stress that I anticipated has been eased by the consignors. Buzzard Hollow Ranch joined with Little Creek Farm to put together the solid base offering and 21 other breeders stepped up to the plate with consignments. The result is an outstanding offering: seventy-eight live animal lots, two flushes and an excellent offering of Fleckvieh semen. The offering includes open and bred heifers, bred cows with purebred show prospect calves by their side, first-calf heifer pairs, a proven bull, a herd sire prospect, and some red Fleck-Angus heifers. If you are unable to attend the Magnolia Classic, you are encouraged to call the consignors with questions about their animals. All of the Little Creek heifers sell open. This is by design. For many years I have believed that calving heifers at 30 months is superior to calving them at 24 months. My reasons have no scientific research basis, but rather are based on observation. This is what my observation tells me. At 30 months of age a heifer is much closer to her mature size. Not only has her physical size increased, but her capacity to consume an increased volume of forage has increased. This makes it easier for the heifer to maintain her body condition, nurse her calf, cycle, get pregnant, and continue to grow. An added factor is that the 30 month old heifer will have her first pair of permanent incisors in wear and the next pair beginning to mature. Thus, forage consumption is easier. One of the worries that we have as cattlemen is calving heifers. At 30 months of age a heifer’s pelvic dimensions are greater than they were at 24 months of age. This should, and I believe does, lead to less potential for dystocia. Most agricultural economists tell us that we should calve our heifers at 24 months. Their reason is that in most cases this will lead to an “extra” calf in the cow’s lifetime. I believe that because of the increased maturity, decreased potential for dystocia, and enhanced ability to maintain body condition after calving, the interval from calving to first heat is significantly shortened. I also believe that over the period of three years the six months delay in breeding the heifer is made up because of the heifer’s ability to recover after her first and subsequent calvings. In the past, we have bred the heifers that we offered in our sale to calve at 24 months and have begun to breed our keeper heifers to calve at 30 months. This year we made the conscious decision to sell our program, thus our heifers are selling open and ready to breed this fall to calve at 30 months. It has worked for us and I am sure it will work for you.

The Fall 2012 ASA Genetic Evaluation marks the first time major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a common base (i.e., the same scale). The common base was a natural evolution for the RAAA/ASA genetic evaluation partnership. Though forming a common base will initially lead to some confusion, the boards of both organizations unanimously agreed that it was a positive step for the beef industry — a step that allows producers to directly compare genetic predictions from the largest multi-breed database in the world. As with any progress, there is change. Breeders and commercial producers will need to adjust to the new base. Much like converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius, it may be a struggle at first; however, over time we will all grow accustomed to the new scale. For example, look at the average EPDs of fullbloods shown in this table. The changes to the base does not change the evaluation of animals; it just changes the magnitude of the EPD. It has the same impact on all animals. Be sure to use the new percentile table to develop a “feel” for the new EPD base.
