My name is Brandon Herring and I am an aspiring architectural designer currently studying in ASU’s Masters of Interior Architecture 3+ Program. My life is centered around my faith, my family, and design. One fun fact about me is that I am a hopeless romantic, and once flew to Finland for a girl.

summer 2020: biophilic design
Concept: In this exploration, I studied the function of the creosote bush and worked to apply this plant’s unique adaptations into the world of design. My first design, the Smart Seat, used temperature sensors to activate air vents that could then regulate the temperature within a child’s car seat. This active response to the external environment mimics that of the creosote bush. Using the car as it’s external energy source also mimics how the creosote bush uses the sun for energy.
The second exploration I conducted looked at the leaves of the creosote bush for inspiration. These leaves open and close in response to the rising temperatures in the afternoon. I looked at the idea of having solar panels that are able to move up and down to follow the sun, as well as open up when completely. These panels would be able to more effectively harness the energy of the sun, just as the creosote bush does.
fall 2020: the arcadian concept
Concept: The Arcadian is a boutique hotel located in Downtown Phoenix. This hotel was inspired by the 5 C’s of Arizona: Copper, Cattle, Cotton, Citrus, Climate. I wanted to use these as points of inspiration to introduce a new environment to the downtown area. I surrounded the entire hotel by a citrus grove, working to create a calming and serene family-friendly environment. I worked to take foundational elements of Arizona and apply them in unique ways within my design.

Concept: Color and time. The goal of this office space project was to unify the past and present of Grand Avenue. Inspired by the black and white photographs of a thriving Grand Avenue, I wanted my design to feel as though one was walking into a black and white photo. This acknowledged the success of the past, while communicating that FIRST. will focus on returning Grand Avenue to it’s former glory. I wanted to include pops of color to highlight the FIRST. products within the building, while also acknowledging the established culture and unique identitiy of modern day Grand Avenue.
fall 2021: the capsule sustainable design drivers
Roofing Design: Roof made of recycled steel, is durable, and is coated to prevent 75-80% of sun’s energy, increasing energy efficiency.
Smart Windows: Windows made from smart-tinting glass, reducing the amount of light allowed in during certain times of day. This reduces energy used for air conditioning and lighting.
Smart Thermostat: Can moniter heating and cooling habits to reduce waste. Other advanced settings can help to understand when heating and cooling is necessary.
Solar Tiles: Solar tiles plaed on the facade of the building harness the sun’s energy to use in powering various systems within the building.
Smart Lighting: Smart bulbs and LED lighting consume less energy, have a longer lifespan, and use safer materials. Smart lighting system can set schedule, make decisions, and be controlled remotely.
Recycled Materials: This building utillizes recycled materials in the roof, carpet, lighting fixtures, and tiles.
fall 2021: the capsule healthy design drivers
Smart Lighting: Smart bulbs adjust luminance and warmth throughout the day to mimic the sun’s natural lighting pattern. This ensures that employee’s circadian rhythym will not be disrupted.
Air Filters: Filter out bacteria and allergens to improve employee comfort and physical health.
Smart Windows: Smart-tinting glass also aids with circadian rhythm, as well as ensuring thermal and visual comfort within the building. Large amounts of windows were used to connect those inside to the outside world.
Work Cafe: The on-site work cafe offers healthy and nutritious dining options for employees throughout the work day.
Private Enclaves: Private spaces provide a space for employees to focus, relax, or decompress while secluded from others in the office.
Outdoor Activities: A bocce ball court was created on-site to allow employees to take a break, get outside, and move around throughout the day when needed.
fall 2021: the capsule sun path study
KEY TAKEAWAYS
The north side of the building is protected from the sun year-round.
The southeastern, southern, and southwestern side of the building have prolonged exposure to the sun year-round. This is not desireable in the summer, but is beneficial during the winter months.
During the summer, the southwestern facade will have the most sun exposure during the heat of the day.
DESIGN STRATEGIES
Steel shading structures will be placed along the southern facade to shade the interior frrom the summer sun, while allowing the windows to take in the light of the winter sun.
Trees will be placed along the southern and southwestern landscape to provide additional shading.
Solar tiles will be placed along sections of the southern and northern facades to harness the sun's energy.
Smart glass will be used on the southwestern facade to highlight the FIRST. product, while protecting employees from excessive light and heat during summer afternoons.

Concept: Live elevated. This 55+ community was made for those who are ecoconscious, independent, active, social, and adventurous. Referencing the surrounding nature of the Desert Ridge property, Paseo draws its inspiration from the nearby trails, mountains, preserves and more. Bringing the natural desert in resulted in a desire to create a community that is not only connected to the site, but gives back through sustainable design. With individual living units, Paseo allows residents to thrive in a healthy and independent environment centered around community spaces that host a lively social atmosphere. With elevated walkways and accessible pathways, Paseo encourages activity and fresh air while being ADA friendly and welcoming to residents of any age.

Concept: Our Earth is like a spaceship traveling through space. It is currently experiencing various unsustainable economic and environmental issues that are compromising our safety and survival. Many great minds are working to solve these problems but have not yet established a collaborative community. The goal of Fragile Craft is to create a space where groundbreaking research is conducted, used to inspire to the general population, and where we realize that these issues are complex interconnected problems that can be solved together.
