GREEN LION FARMS SEATTLE, WASHINGTON
BOOTH 454 & 455 WWW.GREENLIONFARMS.COM WHAT IS CO2? Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a pure, non-explosive, naturally occurring compound. CO2 is a supercritical fluid, meaning it converts into a liquid form when pressurized. At the same time, it is a pure chemical substance that occurs naturally and leaves behind no residues. The Supercritical CO2 extraction method ensures concentrates are pure, making it a great option for anyone in search of a natural form of cannabis oil.

Welcome to the 2014 Seattle Hempfest! When we first began Hempfest 23 years ago, nobody could have predicted the stunning advancement that the American cannabis policy reform movement has experienced in recent years. Not only have Washington and Colorado greatly decriminalized cannabis possession, but retail stores are now starting to operate in both states.

The national narrative surrounding the cannabis plant has shifted dramatically as polls indicate broad support for legalization across the nation. Something big is happening. What once seemed like a stoner’s hazy pipe dream of reform has emerged as a new policy direction for forwardthinking states to observe and replicate.

These events are remarkable, but they are not reason to feel any sense of complacency. We must soldier on in the struggle for full legalization.

While adults can possess 28 grams of cannabis in Washington free from state prosecution, 29 grams remains a misdemeanor, and 40 grams is still a felony. Unless you are a qualified medical patient with a valid doctor’s recommendation, or a licensed producer under I-502, it remains illegal to grow cannabis in Washington State, and all cannabis possession, cultivation, and sales are still illegal under federal law. A mere 50 plants can land someone 20 years in prison.

But cannabis reform is a process rather than an event, and while great momentum has us striding forward, there is much heavy lifting left to do. Moratoriums in many communities prevent retail sales from happening. And while we have earned certain liberties in Washington and Colorado, there are still many states living under the Iron Curtain of Prohibition.

Simply put, as long as cannabis is federally listed as a Schedule I controlled substance, the struggle to legalize will remain a priority for Seattle Hempfest. Hempfest’s central theme this year is Time, Place, and Manner, as new questions have arisen around what the appropriate responses are to the changing legal landscape with regard to public consumption, exposure to children and youth, and other issues. This year at Hempfest, we are introducing two 21 and over areas (Liberty Garden Cannabis Lounge and Winterlife Lounge) where persons 21 years of age and older can imbibe free from concerns about breaking state or city laws, away from the prying eyes of the very young. We hope you will utilize these two areas in the Myrtle Edwards Park section of Hempfest, and patronize the trailblazing vendors and sponsors of these historic 21 and over lounges. This is the first step to having areas where adults can imbibe in every large public event in our Evergreen State.

TIME, PLACE, AND MANNER THE 2014 HEMPFEST THEME BY VIVIAN McPEAK The phrase “Time, Place, and Manner” exists as a legal concept that American courts apply to potential limitations of free speech. The government cannot abridge the free speech of its citizenry, although it can regulate the time, place, and manner of free speech as long as it is in the interest of public safety and certain interests of the state. But time, place, and manner are also appropriate considerations when addressing the issue of consumption of cannabis, especially public consumption in this time of transition while reforming America’s pot laws. Most Americans imbibing cannabis have done so under the specter of prohibitionist policies their entire lives. In order to purchase, produce, or consume cannabis, people have been forced to break the law. Now, in some places, the laws are changing. Some cannabis enthusiasts are wondering how best to navigate the changing waters of cannabis policy when it comes to public consumption. They are asking questions about how to show the proper respect to people who do not use cannabis. What time, place, and manner restrictions do common courtesy indicate when consuming the kind herb? People who do not smoke tobacco are routinely irritated, if not repulsed, when being forced to inhale dangerous second-hand tobacco smoke. While cannabis smoke is arguably less dangerous than tobacco smoke (look at the science), why should pot use be any different for non-tokers? While we may know that outdoor second-
hand pot smoke cannot get anyone high, some non-tokers may feel uncomfortable being subjected to pot smoke against their wishes. The fact that people can smoke carcinogenic cigarettes in public makes it seem silly not to be able to smoke cannabis in public as well. The difference is that tobacco has been culturally mainstreamed in America, and cannabis is still a symbol of the counter-culture and the black market, and heavily socially stigmatized. There are also political realities that are fueled by cultural associations and stereotypes that play a big role in public consumption policy, and will for some time. Lapses in academically accepted scientific data also factor in to decisions about public smoking. it is wrong to allow people to consume alcohol in beer gardens in view of children, and allow tobacco smokers to pollute the immediate atmosphere with tobacco smoke, clearly in the presence of children and non-smokers, while simultaneously prohibiting pot smokers from consuming in public. One more glaring double standard in a long line of many when it comes to us cannabis users. One important issue is exposure to children. Shielding them from exposure to cannabis is good reason for spaces to be made available in public settings where legal adult cannabis consumption can take place. Children benefit from not being exposed to people who are in the acts of consuming any mood-altering substance, including alcohol, tobacco, or cannabis. Many places exist where adults can purchase and consume alcohol or tobacco, and
8
the same should be available for cannabis where legal. Of course, cannabis should be legal for adults anywhere, and you should be able to imbibe as long as you are not bothering anyone else. But that is not the case. So, where IS it legal to imbibe cannabis? When Washington voters enacted I-502, they decriminalized cannabis possession and consumption in Washington State. It became legal on the state level to possess up to one ounce of usable cannabis. However, I-502 only legalized consuming cannabis out of public view. It is not legal to smoke pot walking down a public street, at a bus stop, or in a public park. At Hempfest this year, you will see two 21 and over Adult Lounges; “Liberty Lounge Cannabis Garden” and “Winterlife Lounge,” where people 21 and over who show theirID can imbibe cannabis without fear of city citation, well out of public view. No minors will be allowed inside these lounges, which will be located in the Myrtle Edwards Park section of the event. The City expressed concerns about youth use at Hempfest, and we share that concern. So the 21 and over lounges are part of a pilot program aimed at reducing youth exposure to pot smoking and providing cool spaces with education, refreshments, and ambiance for adults to take some chill time out of the sensory overload at Hempfest. These areas will be in compliance with I-502. If we can make this model work, over time, it will be the first step to having adult toking areas in every public event in Washington.
Hempfest shares concerns that parents and community leaders have about youth use and abuse of cannabis. Nobody wants to see children or young teens using cannabis any more than they want to see them using alcohol, tobacco, or other adult substances. Doping skills that are developed before coping skills can derail a person’s life and hold them back in their development as a functional, contributing adult. Youth are better served when adults have appropriate places that they can go to imbibe. While these adult lounges may feel a little odd to attendees that have experienced the culture of past Hempfests, we ask you to partner with Hempfest as we transition to a model that supports broader community values while catering to the needs of the adult cannabis community. I personally will be advocating equality for pot smokers in regard to the freedoms that those who consume alcohol and tobacco enjoy. It is in the interest of the cannabis community to consider how best to respond to the changing course of events as the process of legalization takes hold, and re-examine some routine practices when it comes to consuming pot in public. By respecting others and considering the interests of young folks, we can sustain a balance that also protects the interests of the cannabis using community as our society gradually relaxes its cannabis laws. Over time, the negative conditioning that the public has endured over cannabis will give way to a better understanding of the world’s most misunderstood and maligned plant, and, hopefully, greater freedom to imbibe will result from continued
exposure and the demystification of cannabis for the general public. Please patronize the pioneering vendors and sponsors in these 21 and over lounges while enjoying the unique ambiance and atmosphere they are providing for your historic adult experience there. Manner is also important. Now there are new vaporization techniques that protect the lungs from hot air, soot, and particulate matter that can be an issue for people with respiratory conditions. Smoke is not great for the lungs, and while cannabis does not cause emphysema like tobacco, which is a broncho-constrictor; hot pot smoke can cause problems forsome people, especially after chronic use (no pun intended). According to the Michigan Medical Marijuana Association, “Vaporization is an effective way to deliver the therapeutic components of marijuana without the toxic byproducts of combustion. The vegetable material is placed in the vaporization device and heated to a temperature of 180° to 200° C (356° to 392° F). This causes the essential oils to volatilize, or evaporate, into a pure vapor, which is then collected and inhaled. The resulting vapors contain no tars, hydrocarbons, benzene, carbon monoxide or other toxic pyrolytic gases and by products of combustion. Respiratory risks associated with smoked marijuana are eliminated.” Cannabis can also be eaten, taken in tinctures, and extracted into oils and other concentrates. People eating cannabis should consier that. eating cannabis delivers a delay at onset. It takes a while to feel the effects, so it is easy to get impatient and take too much, thinking it is not taking effect.
9
There is also a prolonged effect, so take it easy and self-titrate. It can be very uncomfortable eating too much. While it will not hurt you to overdose, you may feel pretty sick after taking in too much pot foods. The same goes for concentrates like dabs, oil, and other extractions. Go light, take it slow, and know your limits. And always keep cannabis away from the reach of children, especially when it is in the form of foods that kids usually like, such as candies, brownies, cookies and the like. You can help legalization efforts by using responsibly, use your head, and know your limits. If you do eat, smoke, or vape too much pot, relax. You will not die. Be patient. It will wear off and you will be OK. Other than driving and operating heavy machinery, the biggest danger from too much cannabis is simply your own anxiety. Never drive impaired . Remember this when imbibing anything, pot included. Lives are at stake. This may be the single most important aspect of time, place, and manner considerations. While alcohol is clearly more dangerous than cannabis, if you are killed by a stoned driver you are just as dead as you would be if the driver was drunk. Driving is the most dangerous activity most people engage in on a regular basis, and there are often no second chances. Once again, know your limit. If we, as adults, use cannabis responsibly, we have every right to do so legally. That’s why Seattle Hempfest exists, to educate the public about responsible useand applications of cannabis, and to advocate changing the law. I-502 was a start. Let’s take it to the finish in the most aware, responsible manner possible.
LOST ITEMS Every year, Seattle Hempfest is left with piles of unclaimed clothing, cell phones, wallets and other possessions. Do not assume your items were stolen. If you lose something, please check in at a Hempfest Information Booth before you leave. When you get home, send an email to lostandfound@hempfest. org or give Hempfest Central a call after the event. We will make every attempt to return your property. Likewise, if you find something that doesn’t belong to you, please drop it off at one of our info booths. At the end of the day, all items will be taken to the South Info Booth to be stored until event teardown. LOST CHILDREN If you get separated from your child, please report to the nearest Hempfest Information Booth. That is where you can find any information that has been gathered. When a lost child is found, staff members will notify operations to arrange for all stages to make an announcement. Children remain with staff for approximately 15 minutes in the area where they were found. After that, they will be taken to the nearest info booth.
HEMPFEST MERCHANDISE You can buy event posters, clothing and other hemp trinkets at one of our three Hempfest Central Information and Merchandise Booths or at the General Store, just south of the McWilliams Stage. While you’re there, be sure to pick up your copy of Protestival, an illustrated look back at the history of Hempfest. Author autographs are available at the Hempstory booth 460/461 in Stone Village, right next to Main Stage. Special thanks to the Human Solution and Washington Women of NORML for volunteering to operate two of our Info Booths this year. 10% of the proceeds from those two booths (near Bud of Seattle and Starborne Stage) go to support Americans in prison for cannabis! INFO BOOTHS Can’t find a vendor you’ve been looking for? Wondering when a particular event begins or ends? Curious about all the different products made with hemp? Come visit one of our info booths! We have detailed maps and printouts of booth placements, in addition to locally blown glass, industrial hemp products and custom Seattle Hempfest gear. The Main Information Booth is south of Hemposium, as you enter through the Olympic Sculpture Park. Another info booth can be found north of Main Stage, just before the “Bud of Seattle” food court. Our North info booth is near the Dancesafe Stage and west of the silo chutes.

Hempfest is poised for extinction! Can you help us survive with a $10 donation? We’ve trimmed the budget the best we can, but our production costs soar with every new requirement that is added to the permitting process. Last year, each attendee gave an average of 28 cents for three days of entertainment on six different stages. Seattle Hempfest is proud to host dozens of guest speakers, more than 100 live music performances and four times as many vendors with products from around the world. This event cannot continue without your generous support. Donation bins have been placed throughout the parks for your convenience.

THE
SPONSORS
THE HEMP AND CANNABIS F OUNDATION (THCF) is the presenting sponsor of Seattle Hempfest, for the 6th consecutive year!
GREEN LION FARMS is the leader in cannabis biotechnology, serious dabs & business services. Green Lion Farms produces cannabis flower, oils and other products for both the medical marijuana and newly arriving legal I-502 recreational marijuana markets in Washington State.
Hempfest is literally brought to you by its sponsors every year (we couldn’t pay the bills without their help), and THCF is our biggest benefactor, year after year.
Our state of the art equipment and very experienced biosciences staff can also work with your plant material to derive exactly the oil you require for your needs. Whether extracting for edibles, dabs or cartridges, we will safely deliver to you pharmaceutical grade oil that delights your customers and patients.
And Hempfest isn’t the only legalization event or effort supported by the THC Foundation. THCF organizes the Hempstalk Festival in Portland. THCF funded the initiative to legalize marjuana in Oregon last November, though it lost in Oregon with 47 percent of the vote, and their clinics are sponsoring new cannabis and freedom oriented initiative petition campaigns in Oregon for the 2014 vote. THCF is also a proud member of the National Cannabis Industry Association, and THCF is directly affiliated with the Campaign for the Restoration and Regulation of Hemp (CRRH). Look for them online at www.hemp.org
Green Lion Farms has recently launched a green building materials division delivering hempcrete hemp bricks, patio slabs, pet bedding and other building products. Let’s build some carbon negative houses, yo!
THCF Medical Clinics have helped certify over 150,000 patients in 10 states. They work hard for all of us. If you need a medical certification, we recommend THCF.
We were into cloning important medical strains early on and now we’ve moved on to tissue culturing and transgenics to prep folks for FDA trials. We joke around a lot but we are profoundly serious about medical trials, accuracy and getting medicine to patients. Partner with us. Let’s heal humans.
Visit THCF at Booths #439-440 and 818 to get registered as a medical patient, and to thank them for supporting us!
We want your business to thrive and Green Lion Farms is your partner in bringing products to market. And monster dabs.

a million additives to their feed tanks. This is why we designed a simple range of complete products that provide all the quality essential elements without the need for excessive additives. Our new Commercial Edition range of products provides many extras that have not normally been incorporated into base nutrients or foliar sprays previously. For example, the nutrient formulations include a root-zone delivery agent allowing maximal uptake of every element within the mix. Think of it as a wetting agent for the root system. Likewise, the foliar sprays also include a delivery agent in the mix, saving you time and money.
DUTCH MASTERS OFFICIAL NUTRIENTS OF SEATTLE HEMPFEST
We at Dutch Master Nutrients understand the true scientific qualities of the cannabis plant and have worked hard to ensure our products produce the best possible quality and yield for the cultivator and consumer alike!
The Med-Series products, perfected by our staff of Ph.D. professionals, are formulated with the highest quality mineral elements and the purest water, with in-built wetting agents to increase elemental uptake – resulting in healthier, faster-growing plants.
So what’s next for Dutch Master Nutrients? Enter the all-new MED-SERIES COMMERCIAL EDITION, designed, tested and manufactured by our in-house team of doctors and scientists in Washington State.
Dutch Master has formulated this new product range with the smoker in mind… Let’s face it; the end product is where it’s at! Bag appeal, aroma, cannabinoid content and psychoactive/non-psychoactive effects all key factors that are impacted from day 1 of the growth process. Our goal is to provide recreational and medicinal cannabis cultivators with the cleanest, highest quality plant nutrition, for results the grower can see, and results the smoker can taste! Guaranteed no hormones or illegal substances!
The Med-Series Commercial Edition range of products is a brand-new, modern approach to nutrient and foliar spray science and the world’s first ‘commercialspecific’ range of nutrient and foliar spray products designed exclusively for large-scale cannabis cultivation. We began formulating and trialing the Commercial Edition in California and Washington in 2012. Since then, we have continuously upgraded to the latest advancements from all corners of the plant-sciences globe.
You will find that the Med-Series Commercial Edition is by far the cleanest, easiest and most-advanced feed regime offered by any nutrient manufacturer today. If you are a commercial grower and are interested in learning more about the Med-Series Commercial Edition, please email info@dutchmasternutrients.com.

As one of the city’s largest events, Hempfest brings in important tourism revenue for Seattle. Q: Isn’t Hempfest just an excuse to get high in public?
A: NO! Our mission: To educate the public on the myriad of potential benefits offered by the Cannabis plant, including the medicinal, industrial, agricultural, economic, environmental, and other benefits and applications. Seattle Hempfest seeks to advance the cause of Cannabis policy reform through education, and advance the public image of the Cannabis advocate or enthusiast through example. Q: Now that I-502 has passed, making an ounce of cannabis legal, is there still a need to do Seattle Hempfest? A: Yes. As long as cannabis is on the Federal Drug Schedule, Hempfest will still be a “protestival” protest rally. We believe Cannabis should be exempted from that schedule just as tobacco and alcohol are.
SUNDAY’S GRAND PRIZE, is a New Oscar Schmidt Delta King Electric f-top Guitar with Rockbag gigbag. The guitar will be covered in autographs from all the performers, speakers, and dignitaries of Hempfest. This is the sixth year that TradeUp Music of Portland has sponsored our Grand Prize.

—JURY NULLIFIC ATION— Jury nullification occurs when a jury refuses to convict a defendant who has technically broken the law. When jurors believe the law is unjust or unjustly applied, they can conscientiously acquit simply by voting Not Guilty. It is a right all jurors have, but one that judges and prosecutors do not want them to know about. Courts have held that not only are judges not responsible for informing jurors of this right, but they may misinform them outright by telling them they “must” convict if they believe the law has been broken.

Legal Marijuana—for the good of our families and our communities BY RICK STEVES AND ROGER A. ROFFMAN PHOTO BY DAVID R. MESFORD that marijuana is a drug that can be abused, addictive, and dangerous. While it may be counter-intuitive to many, we sponsored and fought hard for the passage of I-502 to make families safer and to reduce harm in our society. Washington voters agreed with us and replaced the well-intended but largely ineffective criminal prohibition of marijuana with a public health approach. So, what is a public health approach to recreational marijuana use? It begins with a tightly regulated market. A state agency has now written regulations concerning the criteria applicants must meet to qualify for licenses to legally grow, process, or sell marijuana, the location and density of marijuana sales outlets, and many other details. In order to keep pot from being advertised like beer or cookies, marijuana sales will only take place in stand-alone stores. Second, a public health approach takes the income generated by the second biggest cash crop in the state (Washingtonians still grow more apples than pot) out of an unregulated black market (which only enriches criminals) and taxes it. Along with raising 100s of millions of dollars for our state’s general fund, a percent of the new tax revenue is earmarked to pay for the following:
Hempfest has helped show Washington State that smoking pot should not be a crime. And Washington State is now showing the USA that the adult recreational use of marijuana--smoking pot just for kicks--is a civil liberty. Public sentiment about drug policy in the United States is changing at a dizzying pace. Enjoying marijuana is now legal in two states, as last November more citizens of Washington and Colorado voted for regulating marijuana than for President Obama. At a White House Correspondents Dinner, the president reminisces about his pot use and the audience laughs, as if nostalgic for their own “choom gang” experiences. Denmark flies the Seattle City Attorney (Pete Holmes) to Copenhagen for advice on a smarter marijuana policy. Denver touts the nick-name “Mile High City” to boost tourism. Seven Washington State Members of Congress sign a letter urging Attorney General Holder to honor the will of the people. Since the passage of I-502 and after this watershed year for drug policy reform, the scales seemed to have tipped. States across the union are following the lead of Washington and Colorado, but what does this mean for young people and their families? The writers and sponsors of Washington’s Initiative 502 acknowledge
46
Public education that’s accurate. At long last, credible and balanced information about marijuana, paid for with these new tax revenues, will help users and potential users make good choices. The new law’s taxes will pay for effective prevention programs for young people and their families and counseling specifically for marijuana problems. And money raised by these taxes will be used to evaluate this new law. We’ll learn how public health and safety have been affected, what economic impact the law is having, and how well the public education, prevention, and treatment activities are working. We’ve spent billions fighting marijuana. We’ve tried just saying no. Police, teachers, and parents have been greatly disappointed by ineffective prevention programs based on propaganda. And many consider marijuana
arrests in the Black community to be “the New Jim Crow.” More people than ever are smoking pot and our nation’s costly war on marijuana is a resounding failure. Finally, we have change. It’s not graceful. And it’s coming against the will of our federal government. There will be twists and turns in the road. But we are working out way out of this mess. As co-sponsors of I-502, we worked hard to pass this in Washington knowing the law is far from perfect. But it is a big step forward. We’re on a path that’s good for families. And we hope other states will be inspired by, learn from, and improve upon our law. This is how mistaken prohibitions are dismantled. Not from the top down. But one state at a time… until the federal government sees the light.
RICK STEVES IS A TRAVEL WRITER AND HOST OF PUBLIC TELEVISION’S RICK STEVES’ EUROPE. ROGER A. ROFFMAN IS PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF SOCIAL WORK AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON AND THE FOUNDING DIRECTOR (1985) OF THE SCHOOL’S INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS RESEARCH GROUP. BOTH WERE CO-SPONSORS OF THE INITIATIVE 502, WHICH LEGALIZED MARIJUANA IN WASHINGTON STATE.

IN
MEMORIAM Despite her thin frame and waning health, Mimi Peck made the rest of us look feeble. In 2011, she took an RV—dubbed the CannaBus—on a statewide tour to collect signatures for the I-1068 legalization to educate people on the benefits of hemp and cannabis. Despite multiple police encounters she always stood up for her rights, never shying away from asking cops if they wanted to sign the petition.
Marinol (a marijuana derivative) had in helping sick kids get well enough to receive bone marrow transplants.
MIMI PECK 19622013 For a farm girl, Mimi Peck was full of surprises. She worked in public relations for the Army, and later honed her skills as a journalist. The experience gave her a keen eye for media relations, which made her a force to be reckoned with during her many years as a patient advocate . She was a registered nurse for 17 years. As home health nurse, she helped patients young and old, and learned firsthand the power medical cannabis had in fighting cancer. She saw how medical marijuana helped patients treat symptoms from AIDS, and saw the impact that
She moved to Washington in 2005, and dove into medical marijuana movement after being diagnosed with endstage kidney disease, not to mention rheumatoid arthritis, chronic nausea, and wasting disease. She knew how cannabis helped her appetite, her sleep, and her pain. A scientist at heart, she loved exploring different ways cannabis could be smoked, eaten, and used topically—not just for herself, but for anyone in need.
Mimi studied the law closely and tirelessly looked for ways to help the movement. She knew that medical shield laws were not enough to protect patients, and became a firebrand in online forums. While her impassioned arguments could get coarse at times, it was hard to find fault with them. She vehemently argued against any law that would have a detrimental impact on patients, and correctly predicted state lawmakers would use I-502 to try and undermine existing patient rights. She responded by filing an initiative for the Safe
As activists go, Mimi Peck was as fearless as they come. She was relentless in publicly promoting marijuana’s potential as a medicine, a fuel, a textile, food— even a biodegradable plastic. She felt there were just too many uses for it to be illegal anymore, especially in a world badly in need of a sustainable product.
Cannabis Act of 2012. By this time, her energy level was low enough that another bus tour was out of the question. That year, she joined the ranks of Seattle Hempfest in 2012, manning the radios and setting a new standard for coordinating incident response. By 2013, she had moved back to California to be with her daughter Mariah in California, where she was receiving home dialysis treatments. Nicknamed “v-Mi”, she still managed to play a vital support role for Hempfest that year in a virtual capacity, coordinating last-minute print runs from her bed. She earned a venerable Safety Patrol Black Shirt for her efforts, spangled with glitter, just the way she always wanted. A few months later, she passed away at home. Though her fire has gone out, the innumerable kindnesses she shared with the activist community will be remembered for years to come. Sparkle on, Mimi.
Michael “Parijat” Kearns 1954 -2014 Michael Kearns was born in Georgia. An army brat, he spent some of his formative years in Pakistan and Germany, the son of an army intelligence officer. He was a history major, and specialized in theology. A schooled calligrapher, he attained the name Parijat as a Sannyasin renunciate member of the Rajneeshpuram (he followed Osho). Parijat was a devout vegetarian and a master guitarist who had a tremendous sense of humor and a heart of gold.

A stalwart supporter of Hempfest, Parijat volunteered in the Protestival book booth directly across from Main Stage for the last several years. He was a loving father, son, brother, uncle, and a great friend to anyone he became close to. Parijat passed away in February of this year. He will be sorely missed. Namaste old friend, may your travels cease and may you reside with the One.

DEPENDENCE
W H AT A BO U T M A R I J UA NA DEPENDENCE? Researchers have found that marijuana is used safely, responsibly, and healthfully by many. S O , W H AT ’ S T H E B I G D E A L ABOUT DEPENDENCE? For most people who get high, it’s something they do occasionally. It doesn’t take over their lives. It doesn’t take priority over meeting responsibilities at home, school, work, or with friends. For a minority of users, however, their pot use looks a lot like an addiction. Here are some of the signs: They intend to limit how often they get high, but they break their own rules.
They want to cut back or maybe even quit, but they don’t follow through. Being high takes up much more of their time than they want it to. Things that are important to them (friendships, family, school work, sports, music, etc.) are sacrificed so that they can get high instead. They worry about some problems that pot might be causing in their lives, but they continue getting high anyway. IT’S A DILEMMA. For many years, there’s been a whole lot of propaganda about pot. One of the lies has been that marijuana can’t be used safely. It’s time for the truth. Most people who use pot occasionally do not become dependent. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to become dependent on pot.
55
HERE’S THE BOTTOM LINE: NORML, the national advocacy organization for legalizing pot, says: “Resist Abuse. Use of cannabis, to the extent it impairs health, personal development or achievement, is abuse, to be resisted by responsible cannabis users.” Want to minimize the risk of dependence? Keep your use to weekly or less often. If you or someone you know wants help, take a look at these resources: Marijuana Anonymous marijuana-anonymous.org/

PREGNANCY
W H AT A BO U T M A R I J UA NA A N D PREGNANCY? Researchers have found that marijuana is used safely, responsibly, and healthfully by many. S O , W H AT ’ S T H E B I G D E A L ABOUT PREGNANCY? If we’re going to talk about pregnancy, there’s a fact we can’t ignore. A whole lot of babies get their start when a guy and/or a woman feels inspired while high. OK, time to get serious. We know enough about the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy to understand it’s not a good idea. Serious problems caused by alcohol during fetal development can lead to mental and
physical abnormalities in the newborn. But is the same true about getting high? Just as alcohol crosses the placental barrier, so does THC. But does THC exposure damage the fetus? The answer is: we don’t know enough yet to be certain about all of the possible risks. One thing that scientists do believe, however, is that regular marijuana use during pregnancy leads to babies born with reduced weight. Scientists are still wondering about some other possible risks to the baby, including behavioral and developmental delays during the baby’s first few months. During breast feeding, marijuana consumed by the mother is also consumed by the baby through mother’s milk and may be harmful. There’s another possibility, and this has to do
56
with the parents. For some people, getting high might interfere with their ability to reproduce. IT’S A DILEMMA. Obviously, men and women who get high are not going to wait to have babies until all of the answers to these questions are in. HERE’S THE BOTTOM LINE: Even with so many unanswered questions, the risk is too great. Don’t get high if you’re pregnant. Don’t get high during the breastfeeding period. If you and your partner are unsuccessful in trying to get pregnant and you’re getting high, pot might be getting in the way. Check it out with your doctor.

DRIVING
W H AT A BO U T M A R I J UA NA A N D DRIVING? Researchers have found that marijuana is used safely, responsibly, and healthfully by many. S O , W H AT ’ S T H E B I G D E A L ABOUT DRIVING? Many of us know people who are absolutely certain that they can drive safely after getting high. You’ll hear them saying: “I’ve done it lots of times and never got into an accident. Anyway, I’m really careful.” The fact is that sometimes they’re right. They’ve driven while high and nothing bad happened. But, here’s the deal. The same thing is true for some people who drive after drinking alcohol. Some of the time they make it home without having an accident.
And then there are the times when a driver who has been drinking causes an accident, sometimes with people getting killed, because the skills they needed were impaired. The same is true for pot. Driving high increases the risk of accidents. Why? It’s because driving while high can cause impairment such as: •Lane weaving •Slower tracking of events •Divided attention •Slower reaction time And combining pot with alcohol makes these risks of causing an accident even greater. IT’S A DILEMMA. If you’ve smoked a lot of pot, you’ve probably developed tolerance to some of its effects. And, if you’ve driven while high without having any problems, why not continue to do so?
57
You’re going to make your own decisions. Just don’t be fooled by people who say driving high is no big deal. HERE’S THE BOTTOM LINE: NORML, the national advocacy group for legalizing pot, says: “The responsible cannabis consumer does not operate a motor vehicle or other dangerous machinery while impaired by cannabis.” Give yourself a safety margin. If you’re going to drive after getting high, wait for 3 or 4 hours. Don’t let anyone convince you to get into a car driven by someone who’s high or been drinking. Don’t roll the dice with your own life. We want to see you next year at Hempfest!

S O , W H AT ’ S T H E B I G D E A L ABOUT TEENS? Some teens get high, have fun with it, and think pot’s no big deal. For them, getting high isn’t even close to an everyday thing and they don’t let it get in the way of school, sports, or other activities. However, most of us know teens who get high a lot more often. For them, it is a big deal, particularly if their grades tank, they lose friends, have heavy duty arguments with their parents, and maybe get busted. Doctors strongly urge teens to wait until they’re 21 or older before using pot. Why? It’s because of what’s still developing in an
especially for teens, it can be hard to turn down doing something that makes you feel good, that takes the edge off stress. The reason adults smoke pot is because it’s fun for them too. So, if adults can have fun getting high, why can’t teens?
What does that mean? It may mean: Problems with memory Difficulty learning A harder time planning Struggling with solving problems And here’s what makes it more serious. These problems may be permanent. There’s more information to think about. Science suggests that teens who use a lot of pot have an increased likelihood of depression, anxiety, psychosis, or other mental illness.
IT’S A DILEMMA. So, here’s the deal. Getting high is fun, and

The answer is that people who wait until they’re adults before they begin getting high don’t face the risks teens face because their brains are now fully developed. HERE’S THE BOTTOM LINE: Getting high is fun, it’s legal for adults, and it’s tempting for teens. But, many teens decide to wait until they’re adults. Some teens occasionally.

There’ve been lots of scare stories about pot. So what’s the truth? Adults who don’t have heart disease or psychiatric conditions, don’t get high during pregnancy or when it’s dangerous, and use pot occasionally probably aren’t at risk of any harm to their health. We’re learning a lot about the health benefits from cannabinoids. Keeping marijuana illegal has slowed down research on the drug’s medical and psychological potential. Marijuana’s popularity makes a strong case for its having positive effects. Why else
would people enjoy getting high? People who haven’t used marijuana before may experience anxiety or panic reactions. Marijuana with high levels of THC and low levels of CBD may make anxiety or panic more likely. Driving while high can cause accidents due to impaired attention, reaction time, and other skills needed for safe driving. Smoking pot during pregnancy may lead to lower birth weight of the baby. Becoming dependent on pot happens to 33% to 50% of daily users. Teens who begin early are at greater risk of becoming dependent. People with schizophrenia are at risk of a psychotic episode if they use pot. Regular pot smoking contributes to chronic bronchitis (wheeze, chronic coughs). Older adults with heart disease are at

increased risk of angina and heart attack after pot use. HERE’S THE BOTTOM LINE: We know much more about pot’s risks than its benefits, partly due to prohibition. Take a look at vaporizers to reduce the risk of lung damage from inhaling smoke. Avoid pot use during pregnancy or while breast feeding. Wait three to four hours after smoking pot before driving. Beginning use during adolescence can cause a number of learning problems. People with a history of schizophrenia need to know they’re at risk of a psychotic episode if they get high. Reduce risk of becoming dependent by using no more than once weekly.

MEMORY W H AT A BO U T M A R I J UA NA A N D MEMORY? Researchers have found that marijuana is used safely, responsibly, and healthfully by many. So, what’s the big deal about memory? Some people who get high a lot say they can tell there’s a difference in their memory. That’s one of the reasons people give who’ve decided to quit pot. But, is there really an effect on memory? Is it more difficult when someone’s high to remember things that happened before? Or, might things that happen while someone’s high be difficult for them to remember later? What about when a regular pot user stops? Are there memory problems that persist? Here’s what scientists tell us. The THC in pot has the ability to affect cannabinoid receptors, specific sites in the brain.
One type of cannabinoid receptor, CB1, is concentrated in parts of the brain, the hippocampus for example, associated with memory.
who I was with, and what kind of birthday cake I had.
IT’S A DILEMMA. For some, being high feels like getting lost in pleasant thoughts, forgetting what they’re doing and not staying concentrated on a goal.
A third involves procedure. I can ride a bike today because I once learned the skills involved.
I remember what I studied last week in school.
Strangely enough, this kind of reverie is probably due to pot’s effects on short-term memory.
Scientists think that problems with the second kind of memory can happen when someone is high. It can be particularly difficult to remember information that the person has recently learned.
On the other hand, scientists also think that long-term daily pot use may cause subtle impairments in memory and attention, even when a person isn’t high.
This may explain why teens who frequently get high may see their school grades suffer because pot’s effects on memory get in the way of learning.
There are different types of memory. For example:
HERE’S THE BOTTOM LINE: Part of the fun in getting high probably is due to pot’s effect on short-term memory.
One type involves knowing. I know what a cobra is, even though I’m not sure when I saw one in a zoo or when I read about cobras. Another type involves remembering. I remember what I did on my last birthday and

whether the cause is getting high. There’s an exception. People with a history of schizophrenia risk having a relapse if they get high.
So, what’s the big deal about mental health? There’s a lot that scientists can’t tell us yet.
Here’s the deal. Some studies say that some pot users are at risk of serious mental health problems, but other studies say they’re not.
Question. Can some people become seriously depressed if they get high, maybe even to the point of committing suicide?
IT’S A DILEMMA. If the studies don’t give us solid answers, what should the public think?
Answer. Yeah, but scientists aren’t sure that pot causes depression or suicide. Maybe it’s something else going on in the person’s life that causes these things to happen.
Some people might conclude there’s nothing to worry about.
Question. What about serious anxiety? Is that a risk for people who get high?
A smarter conclusion is to recognize there’s a possibility of risk to mental health. So how do you take care of yourself if you get high?
Answer. Same answer.
• Tune in to what your body is telling you.
Question. Can some people become psychotic from pot?
If you seem to be frequently depressed or anxious after getting high, consider the possibility that pot isn’t working for you.
Answer. Yeah, but, once again, it’s uncertain

If you’re having suicidal feelings and thoughts when you get high, maybe pot is contributing to this. • If you’re a teen, scientists believe the risks of mental health problems, now and later in life, are greater for you if you get high. HERE’S THE BOTTOM LINE: • Clearly, pot does not cause mental health problems in all users. It might be only a small percentage of users who experience them. • Tune in to your body. If you’re often depressed, anxious, or suicidal when high, it’s a red flag. • Be careful with marijuana that has high THC and low CBD content. It may lead to anxiety or panic. • If you have a history of schizophrenia, that’s a red flag. • If you’re a teen, hold off on the decision to get high until you’re an adult.
