The tree in front of the school was blown over.
The destruction that was left behind by the 110 MPH winds that ripped through Roosevelt Roads can be witnessed in these before and after shots taken in the same location. The telephone pole in the after picture was covered by shrubbery until the hurricane blasted Student Life - 16
The Path of Hurricane Georges
Hurricane Georges came to Puerto Rico on Monday, September 21, 1998. Then it left the following day, leaving behind a trail of devastation that included entire homes being lost. Students vividly remember the disaster that was left behind by the 110-mile hour winds that ripped through the island. Even months after the hurricane, students and their families worked to recover from it. The hurricane also took its toll on the school. There was not much physical damage; however, the lack of electricity, telephones, and sometimes water, was hard on all of us. Students and teachers were allowed to go home early because the lack of electricity resulted in the inability to cook food or to have light and air-conditioning in the classrooms. The half-days continued until full power was restored. On another note, we were not required to wear a school uniform. Teachers who did not have power were permitted to wash their clothes at school. After a while of running on genertors, our school was put back together. It may seem like everything is back in order, but we are still recovering from the damages.

#12 IAN KINCADE “GOTTA SCORE!”
“THE SQUAD.”
#3 ROBERT MITCHELL “THEY CAN’T STOP ME!!”
“After losing several key players, including our three pr ospective keepers, the Panthers future looked bleak. On the bright side, we wer e returning with one of the best mi dfield corps ever, “Albino,” “Tita” and “Muchas” Gracias. “Ianovich,” Ale and “Dear” Addy would provide the scoring. However, defense wins the game. After exper imenting with several keepers and swee pers, we stu mbled across Teddy and Angel G. who are as good as they come. Chris, Angel T., Adrian and : ”El Zapo” Barreto rounded off the D. while Megan came off the bench. Once the defense was established, the panthers went on to play exciting soccer. A victory ove r either of the regular season co -champions would have vaulted the team into the playoffs for the fourth time in four years. However, a goal in the wa ning moments of the Wesleyan game and another in the DISAPPOIN TMENT closing moments of the San Jose game sealed the team’s fate. When the SETS IN FOR story’s told we will always r emember how this squad rose from adversity ADRIAN LORD,#5, and became one of the best and most exciting squads I’ve ever coached at AFTER A SEASON- RR.”(Gonzalez ) ENDING D EFEAT.

ANGEL & CHRIS BATTLE AGAINST TWO NOTRE DAME PLAYERS!!
“WOW! DID YOU SEE THAT?”
GLEN JASPER “WHERE’S THE BALL.”
THREE MUSKETEERS
This past season’s soccer teams commenced with many question marks. The J.V. was returning with only 3 players from the previous year’s teams, while the Varsity lost several key playe rs. The J.V. initiated the season with a home opener loss to A.M.A. Then, the team reeled off six straight wins to put them in playoff contention. Newcomers such as Hector Mendez, Travis Fleming, John Haselroth, Felipe Carvalho, and Glen Ja sper combined with Nick Stoner and Richie Ednie to form a fo rmidable, albeit surpri sing, Panther squad. After a fourth place finish, the team had a ttained their season -long goal, a playoff spot. However, the depa rture of playmaker Nick Stoner proved to be a void much too difficult to fill. The Panthers took on the Marista Seahawks. Richie’s eje ction with 10 min. left and a 1 -0 Panther lead proved an obtacle too large to overcome. The squad went on to lose 2 -1 as the Seahawks rallied two goals for the win.

“It was a learning experience for all of us. The squad consisted of versatile players and talented athletes. The team members were Jesse Encarnacion, Dawan Woods, Dameon Holland, Anthony Simon, Raymond Williams, Marquese Jackson, Marquese Perry, Angel Bonilla, Elbert Hecks, Gilberto DeLeon, George Rivera, and Michael Albert. What I, as a coach, lacked in strategy, my squad made up for with heart, determination, and talent. Special thanks from me to my “Iron Man” squad who stuck it out with me ‘till the end: Jesse Encarnacion, Dawan Woods, Anthony Simon, Elbert Hicks, Angel Bonilla, and Dameon Holland. They played the last few games of the season without a bench to back them up, and they gave the opposing teams a run for their money.” (Ms. Ramos-Coach)

THE MOST APPROPRIATE WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE 1998 VOLLEYBALL SEASON ARE “FUN” AND “EDUCATIONAL.” THE SEASON BEGAN WITH A TEAM OF PLAYERS ALMOST ALL NEW TO THE SPORT OF VOLLE YBALL, THEIR GREATEST ACCO MPLISHMENT WAS IMPROVING OUR BASIC SKILLS. ALL OF THE PLAYERS IMPROVED MORE THAN 100% FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR. THE SEASON ENDED ON A POSITIVE NOTE WITH A VICTORY AT HOME . Sports - 91

After winning it all in 1998, the Panthers were all eager to start the season and repeat. Things did not start as well as they should. After four games, the Pa nthers were 2 -2. The next game would be remembered as the infamous game, where two players and the head coach were suspended. C harlie Brown’s Panthers went on to lose two straight games. The turning point came when freshman sensation Richie Ednie began p itching. He ended the season with an impressive 3 -1 record, earning him All -Star and All -Alliance with a 6 -4 record and played Baldwin in the semifinals. The young team played an excellent game but with mental lapses and lack of concentration. They fell short 5 -4 and did not repeat as B Division Cha mpions.

"How 'bout that!" were the famous words of Mrs. Adair. The cheerleaders would like to send out a special goodbye to our coach who has moved and won't be with us next year. We Miss You! We'd also like to say thanks to our assistant coach Darla Taylor f or her hard work and dedication. Let's come back even stronger next year.
