Re-Sample 10:35am
Music, like all things, is composed of smaller pieces that create a unified entity. VCU Biomedical Engineering student and classically trained musician, Justin Johnson, is developing a formula to create enjoyable, yet important, original, and moving music. In his interactive talk, Johnson explains the process of sampling sounds to create a song, allowing us to participate in the performance and prompting us to understand music as a journey. #JazzItUp
Standing Out and Fitting In 10:50am
Jim Robb is an Interdisciplinary Technologist and Adjunct professor in VCU’s Da Vinci Center, training students in the combined studies of the Arts, Engineering, and Business. Drawing from his 40 years of experience as a Richmonder, Robb explores the ideas of Standing Out and Fitting In at the crossroads of culture and community, ultimately offering insight to the symbiotic relationship between the individual and the collective. #StandOutFitIn
Real Pockets of Hollywood 11:05am
What makes a movie a blockbuster? When a film is released in theaters, how much of that film is art? How much is artifice? Film Producer and VCU Business Administration graduate student, Marah Archer, created a system of business analytics based on intersections of 5 independent variables to uncover the determining factors for the success of films released between 2008 and 2015. Her findings reveal more than how to sell tickets. The answers may surprise you. #MotionSuccess
Performance 11:35am
Satellite Syndicate’s unique sound is created in the space shared between individual artists and cooperative community. The Richmond music collective, also known as “the beat music crime mob” looks ahead to the future, but makes the most of the moment. Satellite Syndicate performs their original and transformative music at TEDxVCU 2016. #SatelliteSyndicate
Jokes on You 11:50am
Political satirists like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have often been lauded as acclaimed comedians and insightful public figures, but how much influence do they actually have over our political system? VCU Biology, Psychology, and Pre-Medicine student Sriteja Yedhara explains the evolution of satire, how it shapes the American Psyche, and the resulting effects on our social and political structures. #JokesOnYou

Thandavam at VCU is an Indian classical dance group bringing together the many classical dance styles of India. The group performs in Richmond and travels to compete in intercollegiate competitions. This year, Thandavam will perform two dances at TEDxVCU: the first is in the style of an Indian classical dance drama, depicting the modern day social issue of a student struggling with depression; the second dance juxtaposes traditional Indian classical dance steps with a combination of modern classical, Bollywood, and hip hop music. #ThandavamAtVCU
FREE ICE WATER 2:00pm
John Freyer is an assistant professor in VCU’s School of the Arts as well as a highly renowned interdisciplinary artist whose work has been reviewed in The New Yorker, The Sunday London Times, and NBC’s The Today Show. He brings his ongoing project, FREE ICE WATER, which explores the interrelationships between compassion and vulnerability, connection and conversation to TEDxVCU 2016. Join the discussion. Quench your thirst. #FREEICEWATER
I See You 2:20pm
How do you define success? How do you get there? VCU Educational Psychology PhD student, David Naff, spent four years as a high school counselor, specializing in increasing graduation rates for at-risk students at a school serving a racially and socioeconomically diverse student body. Naff examines how social and economic factors affect students’ attitudes, and ultimately their achievements, prompting reconsideration for the solution to the graduation gap. #ISeeYou
Foodie City Insecurities 3:10pm
Richmond ranks in the top 3 cities with the highest amount of grocery stores per capita. Despite this, Richmond is also a notorious and well documented food desert, leaving many people without reliable access to nutritious and affordable food. Andrea Nguyen is a Biomedical Engineering major in the pre-medicine program and works with VCU’s food bank, RamPantry, to combat food insecurity in the community. Through her experiences, Nguyen has developed a plan to better Richmond and beyond. #FoodieCity
