BIOGRAPHY Having attended the Institute for Fashion Design and the Art Academy in Amsterdam, Denhage and Antwerp, Martine Brand practices her art in an ecletic way. As an illustrator for children’s books, Martine Brand collaborates with the editors Kluitman, Harper Collins, Casterman and Penguin Books. She also developped several original projects with the dutch literary book publisher MatchBoox with different talents: the Dutch Children’s Book award winning authors Sjoerd Kuyper, Tjibbe Veldkamp and Marion van de Coolwijk, the journalist and TV presentator Philip Freriks, the fashion photographer and publisher Michel Haddi, the Walt Disney jewellery designer Kidada Jones and the film producer Cary Woods. The dutch theme park Efteling commissioned Martine Brand to create a serie of illustrations of the Brothers Grimm tales. It was the swiss fashion photographer Bruno Bisang who first discovered her talent for fashion illustrations. She is today acknowledged for introducing a renewed representation into the fashion world, providing the industry with an advertising and economic stimulation in a new creative and sensitive vision. FOREWORDS BERTRAND DJIAN CEO, D. PORTHAULT Fashion inspires me just as women inspire me. Fashion is a reflection of our time. And as time goes by, it reinvents itself like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Fashion is both adaptable art form and practical. The entire world is on a fashion quest. Everybody wants to be fashionable and in fashion. We all yearn for it. From the smallest object to the most valuable of artifacts, everything follows a fashion trend. It is a reflection of time and place. It is a reflection of civilisation. But in fashion there are always those who make fashion and those who follow it. Then there are those who follow those who follow it. I adore all aspects of fashion. From architecture, art, literature – even industry, which follows fashion without even realising it. My experience in fashion came from the fruit of an improbable meeting with a young designer, full of ambition. One day a very dear friend of mine introduced us during a casual meeting. The young man told me he was looking for a financial backer. He looked as though he’d come straight out of a glossy page of a fashion magazine. He certainly had the looks, but at the time I remember thinking, does he have the talent? He was tall, lean and very good-looking. A lock of hair covered half his face and the little round glasses he had on. I watched him arrive at my office on his bicycle. He had a multicoloured scarf around his neck and a large cape that floated in the wind. He barged into my office as if he was a young lord but he courteously took his glove off before shaking my hand. Laure, our friend in common, was sitting next to me and seemed bemused by the attitude of this young fellow. He looked me dead in the eyes and said: “I am the new Yves Saint Laurent and you will be my Pierre Berge.” Berge was Saint Laurent’s business partner and part of the secret to the label’s amazing success.

A few months later I was the head of the smallest fashion house in Paris, yet we behaved as though we were the biggest. It was a lovely boutique with two workshops – one for the fabrics, the other for the tailors. It was the beginning of a dream come true for me. The first collection was a total success and we were awarded Collection of the Year by Dé d’Or, an award founded in 1976 by journalist Pierre-Yves Guillen. We had eighteen models for the collection show. None of them were paid although they did get free clothes! Some of these girls were shot to fame because, as soon that first show was over, we were swarmed by télévision and radio station interviews. We had launched! That same afternoon, all the department stores in the world wanted our clothing. The success had come and the orders came tenfold. It was clear that this young designer had as much talent as he did confidence and style. The combination made the collection… Our adventure together lasted four wonderful years. We opened boutiques around the world and manufactured many different products. We dressed the most gorgeous women in the world. It was all fantastic until one day… It was the day I sold my shares to a very wealthy and powerful group. It was the beginning of the end and it took them only four years to distroy what we had made. Money cannot replace talent and this boy had talent. My small part in our partnership was being able to sell this young man’s talent. I cannot be sad about what happened, I have some very fond memories. It was the most wonderful time of my life. I held the most beautiful models and movie stars of the time in my arms. I dressed them – and undressed them – with love and passion. Sometimes I was basking in the light, sometimes I was in the passenger seat. I had some intense moments and I got to understand just a little about how real fashion is made – the secrets to looking good in the clothes that others make. So there you have it; my slice of fashionable life. I am a business man who had the chance to be part of fashion and amongst those who do it so well. I have met many fashionable women in my time but if you were to ask me what makes a woman truly stylish, I would say this: A fashionable woman is an elegant woman. A women who is not a slave to fashion but who is able to create her own style. Then you are a true fashionista. Then you can be an icon. Bertrand F. Djian Company D Porthault

FOREWORDS TOM FLORIO CEO of Advanstar Fashion Group, former Senior Vice President Publishing Director of Condé Nast In a world of tweets, crowd sourcing and product placement, Martine Brand’s Collections captures the artistry and cultural blueprint that we find in fashion. Her illustrations put us at the table with the designer and we experience the character of the women of whom they design. The images of Collections come tolife with an intimacy and mobility that are the virtues of magazines. In Collections we are reminded that creativity, not commerce, drives the value proposition in fashion. Martine’s talent would translate regardless of the platform.
CARY WOODS Film producer, former Vice President of Sony Pictures Entertainment Can you feel my heart, can you hear my soul when I look at the work of Martine Brand. Here we are !!! The true meaning of body and soul, I am in awe. Martine is able to translate the magic touch she received from her grandmother Loeki Klein. Who in her time was one of the best children’s books illustrator. I might be a growing up adult but looking at her body of work I feel in my bones the youth, the energy, the « je ne sais quoi » that makes an illustration terrific, an intricate fashion sense, a deep feeling and a kindred spirit. It will be an understatement to say that I am not a lucky person. I feel fortunate to be her friend and to admire the asethetic prowess of her talent.
