FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA)

OSU maintains your academic records in accordance with the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). This act protects the privacy of student education records and gives students the right to inspect their records. At the elementary and secondary school levels, FERPA gives parents the right to access education records. When a student turns 18 or attends a postsecondary institution, FERPA rights transfer from the parent to the student. At the postsecondary level, parents have no inherent rights to their child’s education records.

Information regarding education records is best obtained by direct communication between the parent and the student. If desired, students may grant view-only access to parents or other third parties using the Proxy Access tab in Self-Service. See the Proxy Access website for more information. Students may also add parental access to their Bursar billing information by adding them as an Authorized User at bursar.okstate.edu

Extensive information regarding FERPA rules at OSU is located on our FERPA website at registrar.okstate.edu/ferpa
