OUR LITTLE BOOK OF INSPIRATIONS

we create and nurture brands

By popular demand we bring you our second ‘Little Book of Inspirations’. This year has been an extraordinary one. We have been inspired by so much change in the world, both good and bad. It has been a time of awakening on many levels. That one individual, one small belief, one intention, one idea can carry the power to bring seismic change for organizations, the community, and the world we live in. Most striking for us is that we are increasingly losing the connection with ourselves, which is leading us to reevaluate and re-prioritise. We are beginning to look closer at ourselves, at how we must nurture our relationships and fulfill our responsibilities to the planet. Ideas are born from inspirations and inspirations can come from anywhere. As brand creators we practice close observation of the world we live in. Here we stop to reflect, share with you a brief snapshot of 2013 as we have experienced it... By looking, really seeing, we have a better, bolder understanding of what it takes to survive as a business in today’s world. 2014 holds a world of endless possibilities and opportunities. Respect, trust, design, fantasy and risk all play important roles in seizing these opportunities. We intend for this book to give you the inspirations, thoughts and directions you need to behold them... or you can simply call on us.

Technology on the Cusp of Viability We are a species designed to love meat and our demand for it will double by 2050. Population growth sees a constant negative impact of the food industry on the planet. 18% of our green house gas emissions come from meat production. Funded by Google co-founder Sergey Brin and developed by Mark Post, the €250,000 synthetic ‘animal protein cake’ could be the savior to this problem.

The Highest Ever CO2 Emissions in Human History Admiral Samuel J. Locklear III, the commander of the United States Pacific Command, told security and foreign policy specialists that global climate change was the greatest threat the United States faced. The climate scientist James Hansen, formerly with NASA, has argued that we face an ‘apocalyptic’ future. World Bank’s recent report offers a dire prognosis for the effects of global warming. Are we beyond the point of no return? Is the human species the new geological force?

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words The Economist does this beautifully, stirring controversy in its path. Who would have said that one day Europe would be run by a woman, that people globally would uprise against power, and the west lose its innovative edge?

Silence is Golden “I’m nothing...” Erdem Gündüz told BBC. “The idea is important: why people resist the government. The government doesn’t want to understand, didn’t try to understand why people are on the streets. This is really silent resistance. I hope people stop and think ‘what happened there?’ ”

The People’s Media The power of the media; a form of control and public influence for hundreds of years. But the tables have turned. Today people control digital media and this year we saw this spill into the traditional media space. For the first time a full-page ad was bought in the New York Times through the funds pledged on a crowd funding website.

Architecture and Nature “It is a very fundamental question of how architecture is different from nature, or how architecture could be part of nature, or how they could be merged… What are the boundaries between nature and artificial things?” Sou Fujimoto Architect of the Pavillion at the Serpentine Gallery, 2013

Paint With Light We no longer want rooms to dictate our mood. We want to be able to dictate the spaces we are in. The Wi-Fi connected lighting system by Philips allows us to control multiple bulbs from an app on a smart device. This is giving us the ability to change our spaces to reflect our everchanging moods, feeding our insatiable appetite for sensorial delight.

Wear a Machine on Your Sleeve We are seeing constant evolution and revolution in technology. Through traditional craft and engineering, these cufflinks have been elevated to that of mastery. HollenWolff’s self-retaining cufflinks will only open when held ‘North/South’. This mechanical metaphor was built for a reason. Like Excalibur and the stone, it only works for a man who has found his ‘True North’.

The Art of Online Behaviour Our worlds are colliding, connecting and seamlessly intertwining. We are seeing the effects of the digital world and physical lives merging with explosions of creativity. What seems at first to be a piece of wall art, is in fact a visual expression of Deutsche Telekom’s online interactions with its customers.

Partiality Have you ever let art take control of you? Have you ever given it the chance to? Did you feel only half present? Where was your other part in that moment? How can forms have a total or partial effect on our surroundings and us?

ANISH KAPOOR SSM

38 - 39

Basic Play = Creativity Some of the greatest inventions and thoughts in history have been achieved through naivety and the humanity of inquisitive thought. As we rely on technology we are losing these very basic abilities. Through play we can foster the powers of creativity not only in our young, but in ourselves too.

Engage in Every Moment Designer and entrepreneur Duncan Shotton is asking us to not just appreciate the pencil for its creative and learning potential but also to engage with the moment before putting pencil to paper. How often are we in the moment of consumption? “All my work is to bring happiness to people’s everyday lives.” says Shotton.

The Beauty of Both These sets of plates, bowls and cups from Seletti comment on the world today. At a time of integration, yet clash of difference between the Eastern and the Western worlds, it is encouraging to see how these worlds can come together in harmony, without diluting each other’s identity.

Differences Aside We all at one point or another have had to choose sides. This process of evaluation employs our rational and emotional faculties. But sometimes sides are taken on a more simple and unifying premise e.g. the people versus the power. Our everyday differences can quickly be put aside in times of turmoil. If only they could be put aside more often.

Manipulation The boundaries of the real and fabricated digital worlds can often be far too seamless for our comfort. These other worldly creations are set in the studio of artist Jee Young. Her dream-like realities based on books and fairytales are created with no digital enhancement and have qualities that are mesmerising. Are we beginning to develop a mental bullshit detector?

Sex & the City 2050 New luxury Millennials may be about to seize the luxury consumer crown, but their boomer predecessors will continue to make their mark on the luxe landscape. As they focus on life enhancing products this greying yet affluent population is far removed from the stigma of someone ready to retire. They are a golden egg of opportunity.

52 - 53

Re-learning Creativity The mental ability to construct stories is one that is generally employed and exercised when we are considering children. But more and more we understand the power of these stories as something that is needed in everyday life. The flexibility of mind that is required to construct stories can be trained and exercised with this very simple tool.

The Most Epic of Splits Why has this been such a successful viral? It identifies that we all have periods of ‘falling from grace’. We want to believe that we can return to that previous state of glory. Simply witnessing complete and utter commitment to excellence in anything is moving. Why? Because it is so rare and difficult. Here we witness utter commitment to excellence from three different sides – a manufacturing company, an aging celebrity, and a film crew commissioned for the ad.

Brand and Consumer As Equals Brands are beginning to accept the growing demand for pure openness. Consumers believe whatever you want to know can, and should be, readily available. Honestby are a fashion retailer leading the way by providing information such as the provenance of manufacture and material, to the costs of production and assigned mark ups. Here there are no closed doors - a dedication to building trust like no other.
