14 Stations of the Cross, in Memory of Rita Angus oil on hardboard
pen mark “W.1.” 75 x 76cm
$40,000 - $80,000
EXHIBITED: ‘Michael Smither: Paintings (14 Stations of the Cross, in memory of Rita Angus)’, 29 September - 16 October 1970, Peter McLeavey Gallery, Wellington.
LITERATURE: Jill Trevelyan, Peter McLeavey: the life and times of a New Zealand art dealer, Te Papa Press. Paintings pictured with Peter McLeavey page 135 (above), September-October 1970, photographed by John B Turner.
“Rita Angus was a painter I could relate to. I felt very close to her and when she died I was very sad. I felt that I had lost something. And I painted this personal memorial to her in the shape of a cross. It had a landscape inside it, a part of Central Otago, a part of New Zealand that she used to love painting.” – Michael Smither page 136. Jill Trevelyan Peter McLeavey, the life and times of a New Zealand art dealer, Te Papa Press. 2013.
As one of New Zealand’s most renowned artists, Michael Smither’s works can be seen in all major collections including Te Papa, the Christchurch and Auckland Art Galleries, and Govett-Brewster. Known for his bold regionalist style, with heavy tonal undulations and strong colour choices, Smither’s subjects range from religious iconography, domestic scenes, mountainous landscapes to rocky shores.
Here Smither cuts into his recognisably rich and contrasting landscapes, dissecting their fluid rolling forms and suspending them within the Latin cross. Smither painted 14 of these memorial tributes to Rita Angus, representing the 14 stations of the cross. Here Smither signifies the New Zealand landscape as a holy land upon which to reinterpret religious symbols and practices separated from us by thousands of kilometres and two millennia. The Otago landscape takes on a religious relevance of life and purity, while the cross symbolises the death and loss of an artist who represented this region like no other.
Fiona Pardington (b 1961)
Nga Kau Whakapuke / Zeal. Kaka, Nestor Meridionalis, Av 2024, Canterbury Museum gold tone silver gelatin print, limited edition 3/5 signed, inscribed with title and dated 2004 (on reverse)
50.5 x 60.5cm
$30,000 - $40,000
Fiona Pardington (Ngāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe, Ngāti Kahungunu, and Clan Cameron of Erracht) is one of Aotearoa’s most important photographic artists. She draws upon historical artistic traditions such as memento mori, zoological illustration, still life and portraiture to explore contemporarily salient themes of colonialism, heritage, ecological conservation and feminism. The result is artworks that are both nuanced commentary pieces and beautiful objects in and of themselves.
Ngā Kau Whakapuke/Zeal, Kākā, Nestor Meridionalis, AV2024 is a limited edition (3/5) gold tone silver gelatine print of a kākā specimen held by the Canterbury Museum – a 150-year-old institution with an extensive collection of natural history specimens. For this series, Pardington dives deep into the museum’s achieves, exploring taonga from New Zealand’s past and breathing new life into these objects through the medium of photography. These photographs explore themes of memory, representation, nostalgia and loss.
In this image, the taxidermied Kākā specimen confronts us with its sacrifice, yet through Pardington’s artful approach the bird appears reawakened. Captured in this beautiful portrait-sized image, the bird is no longer a specimen owned by the museum – it is momentarily resurrected, precariously poised between life and death. The soft focus on the downy feathers, along with the ethereal glow of light hitting its brow against the deep black surrounds, are at odds with its museological documentary setting. The eyes of the Kākā are inquisitive and watchful, yet see nothing. The damage to the bird’s lower beak reminds us of the Kākā’s vulnerability, provoking recognition of how the past and present collide in this image.

Robin White (b. 1946)
White Oyster Catcher and Harbour Cone screenprint, ltd ed. 39/50
signed & dated ‘77 (lower right)
57.5 x 32.5cm
$12,000 - $18,000
LITERATURE: Robin White New Zealand
Painter, Published by Alister Taylor (Waiura, Martinborough 1981) page 56.
“If any image is central, natural, to the New Zealand iconography, it is the high hill sweeping into the bay” said Patrick Hutchings of Robin White’s landscape paintings back in 1977. It has been 35 years and this motif, along with the sumptuous panes of colour and schematic arrangement of space White executes so well, remain hallmarks of the New Zealand modernist style.
In a 1981 interview, Robin White said “I’m not into speculative fiction.” She paints the places she is familiar with as they appear to her, ordering the world according to her own vision of it. The Harbour Cone—an iconic fixture of the Dunedin skyline formed by an elegantly conical basalt hill left over from an ancient Dunedin volcano—frames the scene, with its curve mirrored below by the belly of the native oystercatcher, or tōrea. In the centre of the scene sits a simple family home, presumably one of the thousands of airy colonial weatherboard bungalows found on farms around the nation.
The composition is deceptively simple: look closer and you’ll see the sense of movement evoked by the undulating texture of the shrub bery at the foot of the hills and the subtle discrepancies caused by the inherently imperfect method of screenprinting. Or stand back and observe the solidifying, grounding effects of the black outlines that delineate each pane of colour from the next, and the subtle tonal variation in the hills that communicate volume and depth.

Richard Killeen (b 1946)
Bells Below
pigment ink, turps based acrylic resin varnish on canvas
signed and dated 2005 (lower right) 137 x 101.5 cm
$60,000 - $70,000
It was 2005 and cyberspace was growing larger and more complex every year. From a simple means of communication and access to information it became a world of its own, distinct from the tangible “real” world that created it. Social media was on the rise. Facebook celebrated its first birthday that year, while Second Life, an online multimedia platform that allowed users to create avatars and interact with others in a virtual reality, was two years old. The Sims, a computer game in which users could create their own households and guide the characters through their complex, colourful lives, had just released its second iteration. This artificial world, accessible through a screen in our home offices or in the corner of our living rooms, was still considered a novelty.
This was the year that artist Richard Killeen (b. 1946) departed from his spacious, minimalist compositions of botanical and entomological specimen silhouettes in favour of stuffing the luxuries and novelties of the new millennium into a glass jar
Bells below (2005) captures the bustle of the modern world in a transparent time capsule. The jar is simple, cartoonish and universally recognisable, yet the scene inside is highly convoluted. There are no rules of physics – no logic, no social norms. Human figures captured from above walk over a disproportionate digitally rendered cityscape, while avoiding each other’s gaze. Lines that appear to be road layouts in one area resemble something closer to electrical circuits in another. Gravity and perspective are meaningless. The giant, amorphous forms resembling bacteria float amongst the scene, seemingly without perturbing this micro-ecosystem’s inhabitants. And the bells! The scene is full of bells of varying shapes and styles, some in ordinary silver and others in technicolour patterns. The visual noise of the scene is deafening and we’re all prisoners of the jar’s invisible but impenetrable walls.
The contents of Killeen’s jar seem more salient now than ever. With the recent launch of Facebook’s re-brand to Meta and its avatar-based virtual reality project, there are growing fears about the pervasiveness of online extremist communities, as well as our heavy reliance on online para-social communication in the wake of enforced lockdowns. Killeen’s commentary on the new digital era is a chilling forewarning, while the microbial forms looming around the composition are equally and uncomfortably prophetic in a post-pandemic world.
In a work as complex as this, there are a myriad of objects to discover, abstract lines and forms to interpret, and logic-defying puzzles to solve. This makes Bells below is an intricate, provocative piece of New Zealand’s art history.

One of New Zealand’s most celebrated Māori artists, John Bevan Ford’s work spans traditional whakairo (carving), sculpture, taniko (weaving) and kowhaiwhai (painting). With his intricate pen and ink drawings, Ford depicts New Zealand landscapes with kākahu (cloak), symbolising the mana (power, authority and nobility) of the land. Through his meticulous practice, Ford weaves together Māori spiritual and aesthetic practices.
The intricate and interwoven symbolism of these works is described best by John Bevan Ford himself in a statement he wrote about his drawings:
“As in all my work over the last decade a cloak is suspended over land and sea to express the mana (dignity) and power of all below. It also stretches out to warm and link them. Nevertheless specific things are also woven into the symbolism.
In the Tararua drawing the lower portion of a large feather cloak reaches down from the sky above the Tararua ranges and the Manawatu river may be seen emerging from the gorge (Te Āpiti) and to flow out to the sea. The divided fish-like symbol above the land relates to the name Tararua, the two darts. These two “darts” are the two ladies from whom the peoples on both sides of the ranges are descended. The eastern peoples whose chief Tara was the primary coloniser of Wellington (Te Whanganui a Tara) and the Ruahine people who came to the Manawatū in the 16th century.
The Manawatū work has a greatly abstracted cloak in the form of a tropic bird (Amokura) which refers to the ancestor Haunui who in the legend is said to have flown to Aotearoa from the Pacific. Here we have him standing still at the mouth of the Manawatū where, as he first saw its great size and depth, his heart (manawa) stood still (tu), hence “Manawatū”. The other river of the Manawatū, the Rangitikei, which Hau also named is shown further to the right. The land is patterned to indicate the presence of people. The triangle shapes, dragon’s teeth, are symbolic of the energy of Palmerston North. The remaining land patterns have been developed from a patterned belt held in the Manawatū Museum, one of the few early plaited works that have survived from the past.”

PROVENANCE: This Hans Heysen painting was presented to Dr Garbett by the Diocese of Sydney as a token of appreciation of his visit in 1951. The painting has remained in the care of his family.
Cyril Forster Garbett was educated at Keble College, Oxford and ordained in 1901 as vicar of Portsea. In 1919, he became Bishop of Southwark and in 1932, Bishop of Winchester.
In 1942 he was appointed Archbishop of York, in which office his common sense, careful preparation of speeches, and gift for expressing in simple language the thoughts of laymen on matters of social, political, and religious interest made him a national figure. His books of this period, The Claims of the Church of England (1947), Church and State in England (1950), In an Age of Revolution (1952), and The Church of England Today (1953), provided a balanced account of his church.
Garbett was a popular public figure, especially as a pastoral bishop, famous for trudging the length of his diocese with his shepherd’s crook, visiting both clergy and lay people in the towns he passed through. Although personally warm, he had a reputation as a firm disciplinarian with clergy in his dioceses.
He was a pioneer of the Ecumenical Movement and, during and after the second world war, travelled extensively, including to the US and to Communist Bloc countries to meet with world leaders. In 1951, he travelled through the South Pacific at the invitation of the Diocese of Sydney, crossing the Tasman Sea by flying boat for a brief interlude in New Zealand before continuing on his journey through Polynesia and Melanesia.
During his tenure, Garbett officiated at many occasions of national and international significance including the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
Garbett remained in office until his death on 31 December 1955; he had been offered and accepted the title of Baron Garbett of Tongham (his birthplace) but died the day before the title had been legally created.
