High school was the beginning in which artistry could be explored. General visual arts coursework, choir, band, and three years of mechanical drafting were a great mix for spawning creativity. Moving on from high school, I enrolled at Elgin Community College and learned at an elevated level (which I desperately needed), renewing interests in the visual arts. Printmaking, drawing, and photography were among some of the classes.
A beautiful building complex on the east side of Spring Street between DuPage and Fulton stands as testimony to one of the most significant recent efforts to improve the City of Elgin. Elgin Artspace Lofts (EAL) is a mixed use development consisting of fifty-five units of affordable housing; a shared community room, courtyard, and business center; 5,800 square feet of commercial space, and the spacious Robin and Mark Seigle Gallery. The gallery is open free to the public daily, and is available for use by anyone for exhibits or private events on a fee basis. The complex was created by remodeling the 1908 Henrietta building at the corner of Spring and DuPage streets, and joining it to a new three-story section to the south. Historic building preservation was among the initial motivations of the project’s early civic sponsors, and fortunately the property developers embraced preservation as a core value. Based in Minneapolis, Artspace is a non-profit real estate developer specializing in creating, owning and operating affordable spaces for artists and creative businesses. Partnering
Receiving my Associate’s Degree, I turned back to music performance and recording for several years producing an album and countless shows and show recordings. This was carried on until 1998. Early 2000 I moved to New Jersey and walked into my father’s business I had been raised in: fine woodworking. Carving became a joy and I still do so to this day. I continue to self-explore mediums and subject matter. Multiple colors are of a great liking, and I admit the large spaces of Elgin Artspace Lofts inspire me to do room-filling pieces. Sculpture is inclued in my portfolio. I’m right where I should be and the art I feel and think is great to have in my life and more importantly, share with you. — Peter Austin
with local governments and arts communities, Artspace excels at managing design and construction projects funded by public and private sources. Completed in 2012, EAL represents a major turning point in Elgin’s evolving urban atmosphere — and its downtown revitalization. For many individuals, it represents a turning point in their lives and careers.
Life on Easel Street “Living here has been like magic for me,” says Peter Austin. “If I didn’t believe in God before, I do now.” Austin was among the early supporters of the project and he proudly retells his story of being first in line to submit a rental application at 6:00 a.m. on day one. “The apartments are amazing,” he says in describing the eleven-foot ceilings, sturdy appliances and quality materials. EAL apartments vary in size from studio to three bedrooms, and have wide doorways, rugged floors and fixtures, and extra square footage for creative processes. “I literally live where I work,” says Austin. “I get out of bed and my studio is ten feet away.” Live/work housing is a key design principle for Artspace property developments, which are geared for people who have some kind of creative practice, whether they earn their living from it or not.

“Anyone can fill out an application to live here,” says EAL Property Manager Kathy Apmann. Like any other apartment complex, “applicants first have

A minimum income limit helps ensure that rents will get paid, and maximum limits ensure that the affordable rents benefit those who need it most. There is still one more test that prospective tenants must pass in order to receive preference: a screening by the Artist Selection Committee, which consists of a panel of residents and the Property Manager. “People have the misconception that no artists live here,” says Apmann. “But every one of our units houses at least one artist.” You don’t have to be an artist to live at EAL, but artists receive preference. Screening is a common practice at the most desirable buildings in major cities. In Elgin, the Artist Selection Committee interviews each applicant, views their portfolio or witnesses a performance, and looks at external accounts of their work like published reviews, documented exhibitions, awards, or sales of creative product. To make things fair, the interviews follow a scripted format and a point system is used to assess the artist’s commitment to, and participation in the arts. “Among our residents we have about ten photographers, fifty painters, twenty musicians, and the rest are writers, actors, designers or creatives in film and video production.”
Peter Austin has served on the Selection Committee for years. “The definition of art is very broad,” he admits, “but once you see what people can do, the creativity is obvious.”
The Image Kitchen For the photographic artist James Harvey, the live/work concept means that half of his residential space is used as a photography studio. Mounted on the ceiling above his galley kitchen are retractable rolls of colored backdrops. Lighting stands fill the space where a dinette should be. “As an artist, I need multiple streams of income,” he explains. “That includes weddings, professional head shots, event photography, corporate meetings, you name it.” Harvey treats every job like an artistic commission, not merely documenting an event, but creating an image from the light available at the scene. Handing over a folder filled with favorite photos, he says, “My payback is not the dollar I get from taking these pictures. It’s the moments I get to photograph that will never be experienced again.” His familiar face is frequently seen behind a camera at artist receptions, festivals and community events where he captures images of people and places — images which he freely shares through social media. Paraphrasing a popular quotation, he reflects, “The purpose of life is to find your gift, and the meaning of life is giving it away.”

Downstairs in the Seigle gallery, exhibits change from week to week and often feature works by residents who enjoy cost-free hanging privileges. Outside exhibitors are welcome to schedule their own exhibits when the space is available, but must supply their own insurance coverage and pay a facility usage fee.
A series of evocative phrases accent the tall, arched windows of Ola la! IJORERE, an upscale event venue across from Al’s Cafe. During the day, you can gaze inside and see pendant lighting, chic-rustic furnishings, floral arrangements and 2000 square feet of open space. But at night you might see sharply dressed guests, a jazz combo, and dinner tables set for fifty people.
Regardless who’s show it is, all exhibitors must patch and paint the walls themselves when their unsold paintings come down. “I have a kit that makes it very easy,” says Property Manager Kathy Apmann. “We don’t do it for you.” In place of a paid staff, the gallery does benefit from a friendly arrangement with Art for All, which maintains the long gallery wall just inside the main entrance, and also contributes ad hoc volunteer support. Art for All is a non-profit visual arts membership organization based in Elgin that promotes local artists through exhibits and festivals, offers scholarships, and hangs artwork in Elgin’s public buildings. Outside of EAL, the entire frontage on Spring Street is currently occupied by commercial tenants, yet these businesses are not particularly “commercialistic.” You can’t buy imported toys or overpriced sunglasses there.
“I had no idea I would ever be involved in the wedding industry,” confesses the proprietor Ola Morin-Muhammed. Working at an architectural firm in 2003, she applied her design skills in creating invitations for her own wedding. Over the next five years, requests for her stationery designs began to increase so steadily that she finally decided to leave architecture and enter the invitation business. “I soon realized that invitations come at the back end of the event planning process,” she said. “To transition into another income stream, I needed to be involved at the front end of the process.” And for events like weddings, it often starts by choosing a venue. She had learned about the Elgin Artspace Lofts project from a photography colleague, and became an influential early tenant.

Her event space, originally designed for two separate retail shops, was modified to her personal specifications while construction was still underway. For this, her architectural background served her well. “I supplied my own interior design plans, including the layout, color, fixtures and finishes throughout,” she said. Sunday. You’ll also find Tania feeling free and at peace: “I’m very happy here.”
Art Area Studio 51 While some artists thrive on discipline, others thrive on freedom and spontaneity. That’s more the vibe at Art Area Studio 51, the newest venture to occupy the commercial space at the corner of Spring and Fulton Streets.
Wood sculptor Josh Guge in his studio at Elgin Artspace Lofts. “Teaching is a great balance for artists,” he says. “You can’t manage a business based solely on art sales.” Nonetheless, his private commissions are increasing, and sales may vary from a $15 Christmas ornament to a $25,000 large scale undersea sculpture. Guge’s techniques are extremely diverse, and include clay modeling, sketching, soldering, resin casting, carving and finally painting. A bird sculpture entered in a recent contest stands in his studio, where close inspection reveals that every feather and part of its anatomy are three-dimensionally carved and painted. “The art world treats carving as a craft, like whittling,” he dryly states. “But it compares to any other form of art.” And though he gratefully admits he “never had a bad art teacher,” Guge’s success is the result of the same passion, study and hard work as any other artist.
Ceramica Sometimes an artistic talent appears in the absence of any discernable family influence. “My family is not from an art background,” says Tania Gonzalez-Aguilar. “I had a rough time back when I was in school, but once I tried throwing on a pottery wheel, I found I could put everything else out of my mind.” Gonzalez-Aguilar is a resident at EAL and has had a changing career, but ever since that first high school encounter with clay,
she keeps coming back to pottery. Classes at ECC, the Centre of Elgin and the Fine Line Creative Arts Center provided more than instruction on technique. Working with teachers and other students has encouraged her artistic journey. Her new studio on Spring Street, Ceramica, An Art-Affair with Tania G., is outfitted with four pottery wheels, a kiln, and a newly installed washup sink in back. One painting of muddy hands sits atop her supply shelf, but she envisions a high white wall covered with many more. “For me, painting is my way to vent. Pottery is where I find peace.” Like the Guge Institute, Gonzalez-Aguilar intends to combine teaching with her own creative pursuits. Her studio is equipped for small classes, and she has plans to install a higher temperature kiln. For novices, she’ll provide bisqueware (unglazed pottery) for fun and easy surface decoration. In addition, she hopes to introduce ceramic arts to kids. “I want to show them you can handmake and create things.” Though she worries that pottery making may be a dying art, you’ll find it is alive and well if you stop by her studio on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or
It’s part gallery, part intimate performance venue and part coffee house, offering a variety of hot and cold beverages to fortify you on your trip through the eclectic mix of framed and unframed paintings and illustrations, three dimensional art, and found furnishings. Proprietor Rich Evans can be found out and about, handing out personal invitations to live events that run the gamut from acoustic balladeers and rhythm & blues bands to pony rides and poetry slams. The bohemian atmosphere makes it a comfortable neighborhood hangout by day, as well as a lively after-dinner adventure, where scheduled acts might alternate with surprise appearances by EAL artists who are normally on tour or working in Chicago. Every event at Art Area Studio 51 allows their Cultural Exchange — a creative twist on the familiar gift swap concept. “We call it BAM!” says Evans, “beverages, art and music.
You can bring a bottle of your favorite beverage, a piece of art, or a disc of original music and exchange with someone else.” After opening in May, most of the speed bumps are behind them, and Art Area Studio 51 shows the greatest promise of becoming what the EAL retail corridor was envisioned to be: an energetic day & night hub of engagement between local artists and a community that loves them.
A Measure of Suffering If nothing in life is perfect, then there must be problems at Elgin Artspace Lofts. We asked all of the artists we interviewed if they had any regrets about life at the Lofts. The answers were very similar: it has its ups and downs. “My father taught me that life isn’t fair,” says James Harvey. “Things change. The weather changes. You have 1440 minutes to work with in a day, and your life becomes what you make of it.” This type of remark typifies the sentiments of all the artists we met, hesitant to criticize something they are actually very grateful for. In reality there were very few specific concerns, and only one we will repeat. “You can write that the photographic artist James Harvey says we need street signs at the corner of Spring and DuPage. How are people supposed to find this place when there are no signs here?”

Peter Austin observes, “I’d like to see more involvement in this community by the people who live here.” He’s echoing a sentiment expressed in 2012 by Mayor David Kaptain, whom the Daily Herald quoted as saying that EAL will “bring at least 55 new residents to our downtown that will also become involved in arts-related activities in our community.” While it’s true that some residents spend a lot of time

elsewhere, and use EAL as an affordable, artist-friendly place to sleep and receive mail, nothing prevents them from seeking opportunities wherever there is more demand for their talents. The project is done, and the artists have come. What remains is for the local community to increasingly demonstrate that they want culture in Elgin and are willing to support it by speaking up, showing up, and ponying up. — JP

Billings Summary presents
The “Singing Janitor” and Other Cultural Phenomena Editor’s note: Every month we publish hundreds of event listings for upcoming concerts, plays, premieres and other happenings. These are all worthy of your consideration, but some are special because of an individual’s stature, the quality of work, or the scope of community involvement. Recent examples include the Elgin Literary Festival, new music presented by Chamber Music on the Fox, and an appearance by Queen Noor of Jordan. These deserved a special billing. We are pleased to present a few of this month’s special billings chosen by our editor in a new section of BRAVO we call Billings Summary.
The “Singing Janitor” Fans of vocal performance will have plenty to choose from in July, as Soirée Lyrique presents three concerts in the area. From show tunes, to opera, to patriotic standards, a dozen singers from Elgin and beyond will share their talents in DuPage Court (July 4), at Snuffy’s Villa (July 10) and Evangelical Covenant Church (July 17). You’ll recognize many of the artists from their appearances with the ESO, Backwards Broadway, and at Opera West in Chicago. And one in particular was featured on ABC7 news, mopping a rest room floor in one scene, and singing with the Lyric Opera’s Craig Terry in the next. Baritone Keanon Kyles emerged from Chicago’s south side to become a rising star who has sung operatic roles alongside the world’s finest talents in Italy and New York. To support his international travels, including his next major gig in Scotland,
Mr. Kyles works three jobs: as a vocal coach, as a department store visual merchandiser, and as a custodian at Channel 7.

Billings Summary has ever put it all on the line, whether for a career or for love. The original production of opened in May of 1975, won numerous awards, and went on to become the longest running American musical in Broadway history. A radical departure from the typical Broadway show at that time where a story was presented as each event led to the next, A Chorus Line is a series of monologues that together form a story line. Conceived by choreographer Michael Bennett, each per- former’s story is told with music by Marvin Hamlisch and memorable musical numbers that include At the Ballet, Dance: Ten, Looks: Three, What I Did for Love, and One (Singular Sensation). Through music and dance we get to know each performer individually and root for our favorites. The Elgin production of A Chorus Line is directed by Nicole Tolentino and choreographed by Heather Goldman. Past EST performances have included Hair, Grease, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Annie, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rent, and last year’s BroadwayWorld Chicago Award Nominee Next to Normal. Showtimes are 8 pm July 15, 16, 22 and 23, with 3 pm matinees on July 17 and 24. Reserved seats are $15-20, and are available at The Hemmens Box Office, by phone at 847-931-5900 or online at www.hemmens.org.
Three Plays by Eckhard Gerdes Who knew that novelist Eckhard Gerdes was also a playwright? Members of the audience who saw the absurdist play ’S A Bird first performed at the Chopin Theatre in Chicago in 1994 did, and they almost died laughing in the process. The children of King-Edison Elementary School in Macon, Georgia, did when they argued about who would get to play which character in Clockwise in their school production in 2000. And a few dozen close friends of Eckhard Gerdes did when they read the script of The Death of Anton Webern Webern, a play that has until now never been published or performed. Gerdes is a literary scholar, critic, award-winning fiction writer and editor of the Journal of Expermintal Fiction He teaches at Fiction. ECC and appeared at “Inside Voice, Outside Voice: A Live Poetry Event” at the Elgin Literary Festival. These three plays offered here are very different from one another, but all show that distinctive voice and personality for which the writing of Eckhard Gerdes has become known. Enjoy these glimpses into the mind of one of America’s most innovative novelists as he depicts the drama and absurdity of human relationships. Three Plays is available now at amazon.com.

This four-page pull-out center section features a massive 21 x 12 inch grid display showing where the best deals can be found on any given day. It points the way to corned beef, kids’ meals, Fireball shots, chicken parmigiana, and of course: all roads leading to a fish fry. Unfold it, stick it to the fridge, tack it to a wall, or stuff it in your glove box. Whenever you get lost in downtown Hangry, pull out the Matrix. A Chorus Line Set on a bare stage of a Broadway theatre during auditions, A CHORUS LINE is a day in the life of seventeen dancers who are all vying for a spot in the “chorus line” of a Broadway musical. Feel the excitement, disquietude, and hopefulness as you see the audition unfold. You begin to see each dancer’s individuality, and are pushed and pulled in all different directions while making you hope for your favorite to make the cut! Based on real Broadway dancers’ stories, as told to fellow dancer and choreographer Michael Bennett, A Chorus Line is funny, heartbreaking, and refreshingly honest. Music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban and a book by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante. Weekends thru 7/24. 8p-10p, Hemmens Cultural Center cityofelgin. org. $15-20 William Shakespeare Lives Duplicity Ensemble’s Artistic Director Nathan Wonder will take the stage in this original production that dives headfirst into the young artist’s struggle to find success in Chicago’s storefront theatre scene. This contemporary – and unapologetically vulgar – William Shakespeare has recently lost his job, his girlfriend, and he has just opened a wildly unsuccessful production of his new play, Titus Andronicus. This confluence of unfortunate events prompts him to call this audience together so he can air out his troubles. Still youthful, undiscovered, and unappreciated, William shows sparks of his brilliance yet to come while he works out his craft in Chicago’s humblest venues, but can he overcome this series of disheartening setbacks? Part of Elgin 400 Shakespeare Festival. 8p, Elgin Art Showcase. $10 Friday Jackson We are Friday Jackson, a 4-piece cover band out of

Mini-Media Guide: FEED 411
How to Get Your Events Listed for FREE in The FEED Publishing and promoting all the things to do in Elgin is why we started BRAVO. We are eager to fill our pages with your events, concerts, festivals, lectures, arts happenings and more.
What We Don’t Want Commercial messages, like “$9.99 Friday Fish Fry” belong in your ad, not in the FEED. Since BRAVO is freely distributed to the general public, private events should not be listed.
Repeating Events Some kinds of events repeat regularly, like bird watching or French conversation groups. If these events are open, they are welcome in the FEED.
Basic Event Submission Visit our online event submission page and fill out the form. Fill in all your event details, along with your own contact info in case there are questions.
Automatic Submission Fortunately, we have a means of collecting events from certain kinds of schedules you post on your website or social media. If your website has a built-in calendar feature, there’s a good
chance that your scheduled event data can be accessed over the internet, in a form that’s conducive to publishing in the FEED. The technology is called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Ask your webmaster about it. Then tell us the URL (web address) of your calendar RSS feed, and we will take it from there.
Facebook Events We can access the events you create in your Facebook account, provided they are open, public events. All we need is your Facebook ID, which is a number consisting of 10-15 digits. You can determine this number by following the tips at findmyfacebookid.com (see link below).

Expression: Finding Our Voice
A Year Of Firsts First Facebook follower: Anna Moeller (June 23, 2015) We created the BRAVO Magazine Facebook page on a Tuesday night at 10pm, and within minutes we had our first “like.” First real customer: Patrick Noone, PJN Tax Solutions (BRAVO 1.0, 1.1) PJN Tax Solutions was the first ad we produced for any customer. It appeared in our first all-free issue, and Patrick paid to repeat the ad. First personal interview: Charlie Rantz (BRAVO 1.0) We chose “Elgin’s Open Mic Scene” as our very first article and we talked to the host of Danny’s Open Mic. Later that week we interviewed Jason Kilgore at D Hangout. First ready-to-print ad: First Baptist Church of Elgin (BRAVO 1.0) Beautifully designed and prepared by Joshua Hoegh, this ad still runs occasionally, but it has to be scaled because we gave Joshua the wrong dimensions to begin with. First art commission: Tracey Padron, cover artist (BRAVO 1.1) While she was live painting at the grand opening of The Haight in July 2015, we asked Tracey for a natural landscape watercolor. She painted this scene in Lord’s Park. First full page ad: Elgin Symphony Orchestra (BRAVO 1.1) The ESO has continued to be one of BRAVO’s most enthusiastic and loyal customers, even during a period of multiple staffing changes. First invoice issued (and paid): Elgin Symphony Orchestra (BRAVO 1.1) Invoice #15-0001 was paid overnight via PayPal. First public snub: Banned from What’s Happening in Elgin, Illinois Facebook group (August 1, 2015) After being removed from the group by the
moderator, Alice Moring intervened on our behalf. Subsequent posts mentioning BRAVO Magazine have routinely been removed. First guest writers: Don Pielin and Ian Kuhn, “Elgin’s Finest Craft Beer Haunts” (BRAVO 1.3) Our first article on food & drink was a fun assignment for these two Elgin beer aficianados. First assignment board submission: Joy Symonds infographic (BRAVO 1.4) Every month we post assignments on the inside back cover. Joy is so far the only person to accept one, sending us a piece on the resale store industry. First reader survey respondent: Carlton Kellenberger (December 4, 2015) The survey is always open at www.marqueemedia.net/Reader_Survey First eviction: Removed from Jewel-Osco stores (December 7, 2015) BRAVO was removed from AutoFocus publication racks for not paying a slotting fee. First ad we bought: NENA’s Holiday House Tour (December 2015) We sent our PDF to program publisher Darlene Hulin. Months later, she would send us her PDF for the NENA Butterly Garden Gala. First party: New Year’s Eve 2015 at Medusa’s Jet (December 31, 2015) Special thanks to Miguel Ortuno and Dave Medusa for the hospitality! First intern: Dana Vollmer (BRAVO 2.1, 2.2) Referred to us by ECC journalism instructor Nick Obradovich, Dana did some fierce research and writing for BRAVO during a time when we didn’t print bylines, which is something we’ll regret for a long time. She deserved the credit. First ad contract: Ray Maxwell, Elgin Antiques & Uniques (BRAVO 2.1) Running the same ad every month makes Elgin Antiques the easiest customer we work with. First person depicted on cover: “Broad Cast of Characters” (BRAVO 2.1) Artist David Benson created this illustration of Larry Jones, Jeff Meyers, Jeff Ward, Dave Niven, Dave Weiser, Maria D’Angelo and Sigi Psimenos.
First sponsorship: 2016 Elgin Literary Festival (January 30, 2016) In-kind sponsorships, bartering — it’s all good for cash-strapped nonprofits and “penny saver” media. We should do more of this. First news coverage: Elena Ferrarin, Daily Herald, “The Man Behind Elgin’s Bravo Magazine” (January 30, 2016) We don’t like giving interviews, but this fine article was well-received. First paid subcontractor: Morgan Wotjkowski (BRAVO 2.2) The only designer ever to ask us for freelance work is the only one we ever used. She worked on a full page ad for Janus Theater’s An Iliad. First worst layout mistake: Wrong issue number on cover (BRAVO 2.2/1.5) Nobody complained. It’s a little thing, but it drives us nuts. First printed byline: Gareth Mann Sitz, “Stages of Progress” (BRAVO 2.3) We managed to get a pretty thorough history of Elgin’s theater scene by badgering Gareth for materials, which came in a series of coherent fragments. First fictitious ad: Spurious Jam (BRAVO 2.3) Spurious band with schedule of live appearances at spurious bars. Ha, made you look! First award: 2016 Elgin Image Award (March 17, 2016) Nominations from Downtown Neighborhood Association and Tom Armstrong were a great honor. First standalone rack: Danny’s Pizza (BRAVO 2.5) After “borrowing” space on Wassup magazine racks for months, we finally got our own rack. Now Wassup is “borrowing” space from us.
A timeline of our funnest, finest and not-so-finest moments from the first year in print. Thanks! from
