Photo by Jeff Sexton “Here’s a fine example of a grade 367 Elgin movement. This is a rather rare 18 size, 21 jewel, lever-set, Father Time model, this one made about 1910. This is a true railroad watch.”

I learned watchmaking from my Grandfather, and have been proud to carry on the work he cared deeply about his whole life. Every timepiece is unique and special, and every one should be in the best condition it can be. I specialize in servicing vintage American watches, but I’m also happy to try to answer any questions you may have about your timepiece, regardless. I use period techniques and materials in all my work. All the tools, procedures and materials I use with antique watches are consistent with the original recommendations of the Elgin National Watch Co. I have taken care to learn and apply professional, and frequently old-fashioned, methods. I learned to do this work from my Grandfather, Everett Sexton, who attended the Elgin Watchmakers’ College in the 1930s. He had a long career as a watchmaker of some reputation. He never lost his fondness for Elgin products. At school, Everett Sexton was recognized for unusual skills and was personally instructed by William Samelius. I am very fortunate for this. Although I’ve read a lot of books on watchmaking, and I can tell you that there is much I learned from my Grandfather that you won’t find in a book. Every watch has a story, and I have been told of some wonderful histories watch owners have of their families and their watches. Let me know what you know!

Shared Values: Horn Sweet Home

Preservation Hall by Debra Kollar Many people move to Elgin for its beloved historic homes or its flourishing performing arts scene. In 2014, for Kelly and Jim Langenberg, accomplished brass musicians and parents of two-year-old twins Abigail and Eislynn, Elgin would prove to be both. The Portage Park pair set out on a massive house hunt in the surrounding area to search for a larger, but still affordable home for their growing family.

sign. We were like, it’s so awesome. It didn’t look anything like the pictures. For ten minutes we tried to get the lock box to work.” They realized the listed house was on a different block. It was too late though. “Once we saw this house it was hard to forget it,” says Kelly. They found out however, the Queen Anne had a contingent offer and was no longer for sale.

There was one additional necessity. They needed to find a home big enough to accommodate Jim’s musical repair business and in a town that did not already have a repair technician. It was a tall order for the young couple. “We looked at 25 houses at least.” Jim, a tuba player Jim and Kelly Langenberg’s home in 2015. with a Master’s in Music, recalls the house hunt. “We were looking all over the place — Whether by luck or fate, the Carpentersville, Gurnee, Crystal previous offer fell through and Lake.” the home went back on the market. “We told our realtor, ‘Yes! Several friends in the ESO We want to go look at it today.’” (Elgin Symphony Orchestra) suggested Elgin. How they ended up at the 1901 Victorian-style Queen Anne fixer-upper on the edge of Elgin’s oldest Historic District was purely by a GPS mistake. Kelly, a French horn musician with several advanced degrees, recounts with a smile that first trip to Elgin with the realtor to visit a listed home. “She pulled up to this house because there was a for sale

As with many “painted ladies” in the Elgin Historic District, it needed some TLC.

“There was standing water in the basement, the roof needed to be replaced ... there were a lot of repairs,” Jim says. But when you are in love, you often take the good with the bad. “After we saw it, we were like, we have to try and make this work,” Kelly remembers.

effort in the restoration of their home. The couple has the display photograph hanging proudly on their living room wall, and although they still have a to-do list, they are glad to finally enjoy the fruits of their labor. “The restoration was necessary, the award was a dividend, but the true reward is that we now get the pleasure of living in this beautiful home,” Kelly says.

down from Ingleside to help with most of the restoration projects. “We have poured our heart, sweat and tears into this home,” the couple says. In 2017, the Elgin Heritage Commission recognized it, too. Last year, the Langenberg’s were one of nine recipients to receive the coveted Mayor’s Awards for Preservation for their personal hands-on

A story is never merely about a home; it is about the family who lives inside: Kelly and Jim, professional musicians; the twins (now age six), violin players; Bruckner and Shostakovich, the family’s two cats named after beloved composers. With the Langenberg’s, their story is told through music.

A Sharp Quartet Kelly, a horn professor at NIU, UIC, North Park, and ECC, began her love affair with the French horn at the age of 16 after playing the trumpet for six years. Her passion is as much about the sound — “rich, dark, and powerful” — as the chal-

lenge: the horn is more difficult to play than other brass instruments because of its construction. She says, “The sky is the limit on how good I can get at playing it. The highest level of study on any instrument will give back what you put into it, and it is the small daily breakthroughs that motivate me to practice every day.” And practice she does! Kelly is a member of the all-female Alloy Horn Quartet. “We try not to make gender a part of our group for many reasons. The fact that we are four strong female horn players is just a novel coincidence, but it does make it easier to book hotel and travel.” This summer the talented quartet will be Featured Artists for the International Horn Society’s 50th Annual Symposium — a distinguished achievement in the horn world. “It will bring our highest level of exposure, so we are very excited and optimistic about what our future will look like as a classical performing ensemble.”

If you would like to see Kelly play her fabulous French horn, “The Alloy Horn Quartet is playing at the Harold Washington Library on March 9. We are scheduled to perform on next season’s Chamber Music on the Fox series, so look for us there!” “Personally, I will perform in ECC’s Faculty Showcase recital set for March 8, and Jim and I will both perform with the Alliance Brass Quintet at the St. Charles Library on April 22.” Her website is www.alloyhornquartet.com.

Tuba Glue Jim was lured into playing the tuba by shiny quarters. “When I was 4, my parents took me to a German restaurant that had a house band. The sousaphone player came by the table and we all threw quarters in the bell. I thought that was awesome!” When it came time to pick an instrument for band, Jim was hooked. The only problem: the school had one tuba and someone else was playing it. Patience and determination — traits he would later need for home restoration and his instrument repair shop — were learned here.

“I’ve been a contracted member of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra in Iowa for 14 seasons and I do get called to play other one-off jobs.” He also plays in a diverse menagerie of bands: Alliance Brass Quintet plays classical music; Mucca Pazza as Jim explains, “Is a marching band that thinks it’s a rock band and a punk band that thinks it’s a jazz band”; and going back full circle, a lively German folk/pop band called Alpine Thunder where he now gets to perform in German restaurants. Jim says, “The four-yearold me is very pleased.” The life of a professional musician however, is unpredictable. Jim started a business, Brazen Bandworks, where he repairs, cleans, restores and customizes instruments, both brass and woodwinds. While it came from passion (Kelly says her husband can fix, repair, or build anything), it also came from necessity: to have steady work when not performing and to supplement the family income. The choice of where to open Brazen Bandworks coincided perfectly with finding their Queen Anne home in Elgin. “We wanted a larger house in a community where there wasn’t already a musical instrument repair store.” Jim says if the right opportunity presents itself, he may move the home-based business

wanting to do things one way, he was like, ‘Well, no Jim. It needs to be like this.’ Looking back, being able to see all the things he was able to gently nudge me towards, made a big difference in where I am now.”

A Symphony of Support

Domestic Harmony

It takes an ensemble of instruments to give depth to an orchestral piece and it takes a symphony of many supporters — family, teachers, colleagues, conductors, patrons — to make a musician. Kelly has a special place in her heart when remembering her number one fan as a child: her grandpa. “He played string bass in a Southern Gospel band and we enjoyed music together. Where I grew up was rural and country and he lived next door to us. He would ride his tractor over to our house, just to sit on the front porch and listen to me practice the piano. Then he would come in and get something out of the fridge to eat and go home.” Teachers are not far behind family when shaping a young musician’s career. It is a fine line to know when to build confidence and when to push the student for more. Jim credits his college professor, Charles Schuchat, the principal tubist of the ESO, as the musician who has influenced him the most. “He was a nice guy, which was great, but there were a lot of growing experiences in learning the instrument. Being a hardheaded student,

It is Sunday in the Langenberg household. The slow cooker is doing the work for the evening’s dinner and Kelly is at the dining room table helping the twins finish last minute homework for school tomorrow. Jim can usually be found working in his basement shop or arriving home from Hofbrauhaus Chicago after doing a gig with Alpine Thunder, bringing the twins home their favorite dish, what they affectionately call with their gap-toothed grins, “Opera House” pork.

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest arts institutions in the Fox Valley, founded 67 years ago with a mission to provide quality music, education, and outreach opportunities for the community. While demand is great for the quality music presented by the award-winning ESO and its acclaimed music director Andrew Grams, the ESO understands that the concert-going experience must reflect the desires of the community it serves. To that end, the ESO works hard to make the experience casual, relaxed and friendly. And the ESO is also committed to presenting music and guest artists that reflect the diversity of our world. The March 24-25 ESO concert weekend is an opportunity for the community to “vote”, with its purchase of tickets, that diversity in an orchestra and its guest artists are important components of attracting newcomers to the concert hall.

Janus Theatre Examines Racism Janus Theatre Company’s 19th season presents three plays that explore and attempt to understand through theatre the creation, debate, and removal of the mural “American Nocturne” in Elgin during 2016. This project approaches the subject of art and culture in the community by asking three questions separate-

9

ly in each of the plays: What is art? Why do we make art? How do we talk about race? The project continues in March with Spinning Into Butter by Rebecca Gilman, directed by Richard Pahl. Spinning Into Butter explores the dangers of both racism and political correctness in America. When one of the few African American students at liberal Belmont College begins receiving hate mail, the campus erupts, first with shock, then with mutual recrimination as faculty and students alike try to prove their own tolerance by condemning one another. At the center of this maelstrom is Sarah Daniels, the dean of students. As the administration sponsors public “race forums” and the students start their activist groups, Sarah is forced to explore her own feelings of racism. Her self-examination leads to some surprising discoveries and painful insights, the consequences of which even she can’t predict. Performances are held weekends March 16-26 at the Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division

Michael Ingersoll:

Under the Stage Lights by Vanessa Passo Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons sing, “Oh, what a night.” Michael Ingersoll would have to agree. The 39-year-old singer from Dayton, Ohio has had plenty of December, 1963 (“Oh, What a Night”) moments. “Oprah, Jay Leno, PBS, we’ve been on over a hundred million American television sets together during our career,” Ingersoll said, to name a few. Ingersoll played The Four Season’s member, Nick Massi, in Jersey Boys as part of the first company ever outside of New York City. He graced the stages in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago. A quartet comprised of ex-Jersey Boys was formed from the success of this long running show, named Under the Streetlamp. Doo-wop, Motown, and rock ‘n’ roll hits were on the menu for the four-man-show, including Ingersoll and musical brother (and former Frankie Valli character in Jersey Boys), Christopher Kale Jones. For six years, Under the Streetlamp made four PBS concert specials, and toured all over the country.

this music, but [Jones] and I have become brothers in Rock ‘n’ Roll over the past decade,” Ingersoll said. “We’re actually returning to a theatre that really helped get our concert careers started, once we were out of Jersey Boys.”

“That’s how we fell in love with the doo-wop and rock ‘n’ roll music, because we did it over a thousand times, many times a week,” Ingersoll said.

These legendary decades are not unfamiliar to the artists, where stars like the Everly Brothers, the Beatles, the Righteous Brothers, and Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, and many more, reign supreme.

Now, (some of) the boys are back and better than ever in their concert event “Lean On Me,” presented by Artist Lounge Live, right back where their concert careers started — at Elgin Community College. “There’s literally a brotherhood in Rock n’ Roll in terms of a lot of actual brothers making

And so, the brotherhood comes to life for this duo’s performance, “featuring the most well- known and beloved rock ‘n’ roll hits from the 50’s and 60’s era,” Ingersoll said.

The charisma and passion Ingersoll possesses is only a foreshadowing of how this concert event may play out.

A Flicker of Interest Ingersoll wasn’t born into the spotlight of a street lamp or

stage light. His love for music started right at home. “I got my start because my grandfather [Roy Francis] was a jazz pianist in the 1960’s, and I was the only one of eight grandchildren that was as fascinated with the piano as he was,” Ingersoll said. “He introduced me to jazz greats like Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong, and I wanted to be like him when I grew up,” Ingersoll reminisces of his grandfather, realizing he is pursuing a career that his working grandfather could no longer do in order to provide for his children. “I talk about him when I’m on stage quite a bit, and there’s always a song I dedicate to him in his memory.” From an ear-

ly fascination with the soulful sounds of the 60’s, Ingersoll’s musical future came into focus in his high school days. He later attended Miami University as an acting major.

get a job that’s big enough for anybody to care at all. And then once you do, you hang on to that and you build on that for all it’s worth, if you’re smart.”

To continue on in such a business, with much success, was a blessing for Ingersoll. He took opportunities and ran with them.

Ingersoll takes the passion and soul stemming from the music of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s decades that so many people connect with then and now, and pours it out in his performances and concerts for people everywhere to share in the success of not only his time, but in the time that great music was born.

“It’s a rare privilege to work in the music business and the theatre business and have that be your full-time occupation. And luckily that has been Chris’s and my trajectory for well over 10 years,” Ingersoll said. He continues, “Those successes that you fight for, that takes years to get to, I mean — Chris and I were both professionals for 10 years before we got Jersey Boys ... so you fight for years to

in the long run here in Chicago that allowed us to build on something that people could be familiar with, that people could identify with and that gave people some modicum of faith that we had any clue of what we were doing, whatsoever.”

And smart, he was.

For the connections formed among people just by Ingersoll’s work, he shares his appreciation by saying,” Even more importantly, you learn how to best serve your audience, you learn how to best serve the people who make your career possible at all. Those people deserve all of our gratitude, and I can assure you that they have it.”

“In our business, there’s a saying that ‘work begets work,’” Ingersoll said. “So, it’s opportunities like being on Oprah, being on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, being on PBS and being in the first company of Jersey Boys outside of Broadway

The music stylings from a time that seems so long ago, may really be of benefit to the people of today’s era, Ingersoll thinks, now

more than ever. “The environment in America right now is a negative one and a scary one for a lot of people. What we hope to be able to do is be a respite and a relief from that energy and provide something that is life affirming and positive. It reminds us that through this music that is part of our American culture, part of our American birthright, we have more in common than we have different,” Ingersoll said. “Lean on Me” allows for these commonalities among the audience, and even the singers, to shine through. “People are going to know all the words to our songs, they’re going to be familiar, they’re going to be people’s favorite songs that are going to remind people of times that make them feel good. And we want people to feel good right now! Because I think people are in desperate need for it; I can certainly tell you that I am.” Positivity and unity is one of the many qualities these eras of music provides for not only the audience, but Ingersoll, himself. “All pop music is based on the music that came before it, so, you know, it certainly influenced me in that way,” Ingersoll said.

“Rock ‘n’ roll is inherently joyous music. If often takes difficult subjects and difficult topics and tries to channel them into something positive. It certainly was built on the backs, in many ways, of people that were going through incredible challenges ... channeling that energy into something that was life affirming in finding an audience.” Allowing negativity to filter through a joyous lens is recognized by Ingersoll as something the people of this country should take a closer look at, to find light in a darkened place. “The themes that are replete in rock ‘n’ roll deeply affect me because I’m an American, and deeply affect our audience because they’re Americans. In some ways, I feel like we’re closer to unity when some of this music was being made than we are now.”

Spotlight on Service When he’s not performing under the stage lights, Ingersoll enjoys using his passion of music to do more than just perform.

organizations that use this music and use concerts — whether it’s me or Chris or Under The Streetlamp — we make that the centerpiece of a fundraising organization’s event or gala. We’re able to help draw awareness to the cause, we’re able to help draw dollars to the cause ... our appearances are a jumping-off point for them to be able to do their incredibly important work. So, anytime that I can make music and partner with an organization that is also doing good in the world, it’s the best of all worlds. Being service-oriented is an essential part of my life.” His involvement in philanthropic work has included raising money for the American Cancer Society, United Way, and the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, according to Artist Lounge Live. Full Moon Ride It’s the monthly Elgin full moon ride. This will be a moderate pace ride for a few miles throughout the core neighborhoods of Elgin. Join us for this social night ride! Reminder: Illinois State law requires bike riders to have a clear light on the front and a red reflector or a red light on the back for night time riding. That would be the minimum attempt for safety, so let’s all be easy to see on the street. 9p, Advocate Park, Chicago and Spring, Downtown Elgin elginbikehub.com. A NEW space, new management, and a new chance to get together with like-minded people to work on your skills as an artist. Bring drawing supplies (Boards, paper, pencils, paint) Tables and chairs

Students and professional artists will come together to create visual and performance works exploring a range of social issues. Their creative works will be on display at Side Street Theater. We hope you will join us in celebrating the work of these upand-coming artist-activists. Who are YLA cadets? They are 128 students from 7th to 12th grade living in the Elgin Community College District 509 (including U-46, D300, D301, and D303 Illinois school districts). 93% are students of color. 100% come from families living in poverty. Many cadets have been told that going to college is not an achievable dream. Some have been told that they do not belong in our country or, even worse, that they simply should not have been born. Yet 100% of them live the YLA motto: “I AM on the path to success. I AM college bound.” 100% are being prepped for college and trained as leaders. 100% are making a difference today as our youngest leaders to stand up for the poor and disenfranchised in our community. 4p, Side Street Studio Arts, 15 Ziegler Court 847.429.2276 sidestreetstudioarts.org. COLOR MY CITY

Illustrations by Madeline Richmond

IDEA BOX

Draw in the name “STEWART HALL” and the missing pediment above it. What’s happening inside these store fronts today?

5-13 S. Spring Street, once known as “The Academy of Music” was built in 1888 for Angus McIntosh Stewart, a native of Scotland. Its second floor was equipped with a stage, and for a brief time it was used by traveling companies, but it was never profitable as a theater. It became a popular place for dances, amateur musical performances, public meetings and revivals. The first floor was first occupied by a penny newspaper named the Dial, that became the Press, and closed in 1910. Internet sources: pedalingpreservation. wordpress.com historicelgin.com © M.E. Spinning Into Butter Janus Theatre Company presents Spinning Into Butter by Rebecca Gilman. The play is directed by Richard Pahl, Stage Managed by Tara Morrison and Produced by Sean Hargadon. The cast includes Spncer Huffman, Tricia Hewson, Tom Hussey, Juston Schaller, Brian Greco, Shannon Mayhall and Elbron Eramia. Continues weekends thru 3/25. 8p, Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division Street janusplays.com. $18 Leaving Scarlet 9p, Danny’s on Douglas, 231 Douglas Avenue

Carsie Blanton New Orleans-based singer/songwriter Carsie Blanton’s musical style is unorthodox -- ranging from jazz and Motown to burlesque and pop. Anchored by distinctive vocals that evoke the early days of jazz and contemporary winking humor, Blanton’s music is playful, smart, and ferocious. Among Blanton’s supporters are musicians like Paul Simon and Loudon Wainwright III-Blanton opened for Simon during his 2011 tour. May contain mature content. 7p, ECC SecondSpace Theatre, 1700

How to Get Your Events Listed for FREE in The FEED Publishing and promoting all the things to do in Elgin is why we started BRAVO. We are eager to fill our pages with your events, concerts, festivals, lectures, arts happenings and more.

What We Don’t Want Commercial messages, like “$9.99 Friday Fish Fry” belong in your ad, not in the FEED. Since BRAVO is freely distributed to the general public, private events should not be listed.

Repeating Events Some kinds of events repeat regularly, like bird watching or French conversation groups. If these events are open, they are welcome in the FEED.

Basic Event Submission Visit our online event submission page and fill out the form. Fill in all your event details, along with your own contact info in case there are questions.

Ask your webmaster about it. Then tell us the URL (web address) of your calendar RSS feed, and we will take it from there.

Facebook Events We can access the events you create in your Facebook account, provided they are open, public events. All we need is your Facebook ID, which is a number consisting of 10-15 digits. You can determine this number by following the tips at findmyfacebookid.com (see link below).

Google Calendar If you have a Google account, you have free access to a suite of useful tools, including a calendar that can be accessed as an RSS feed. coating the plexi-glas plate with pigment, you will be able to lift out (subtractive or “taking away”) the image you want and manipulate values and details with Q-tips, kleenex, brushes, your fingers, and many other kinds of tools. The image is then “printed” to a damp piece of paper with a tube of PVC as your press! Discussion about paper, paints, and printing techniques will take up a good portion of the time before and during printing. From This River Town

Bib Overalls, No Apron by Mary Ellen Goodwill A mild day in mid-March found Barb (known here and there as Barb Nonetheless), peeling sweet potatoes over the kitchen sink. The potatoes would be thinly sliced, lightly steamed and added to yesterday’s pot of chili. Ta da! — sweet chili and, more importantly, MORE chili so she would not have to think about cooking for another day or two. “A calm and modest life brings happiness,” wrote Albert Einstein. Barb had the modest part down and was making inroads, be they miniscule, on the calm. Yesterday during her walk to the open field which lightly covers the detritus of the former Sherman Hospital, she stopped to watch an eagle climbing high above the river. She crossed the field in a leisurely manner all the while picturing the ambulance which everyone knows is buried there six feet under, its lights flashing for eternity. Per her routine, she visited the nine foot tall white marble sculpture, “Embrace,”* smiled anew at its sensual curves and patted its side. She thought aloud, “This would be a great fieldtrip-on-foot for a fifth or sixth grade class from McKinley.” A concerted look, a lesson on abstract sculpture and a spirited run about the field, returning to school enlightened and invigorated. Today would be dust mop day for Barb because her neighbors were gone and thus would not see the baseball-sized dust balls fly off the mop when she banged it against the ground in the back yard. Also, the lilies were not yet in bloom and that was good: Lily

blossoms topped by dust balls can be mortifying. And, finally, she would wash the forks. When guests turned circles in her small kitchen and asked, “Where’s your dishwasher?” she answered, “You’re lookin’ at her.” Barb had no dishwasher so she did all dishes by hand. The most time consuming, even more than a Pyrex dish coated with chicken grease and burnt skins, were the forks, so she left them for last. Twelve dinner forks and twelve salad forks, four tines each. Do the math. Running a scrubby along each side of each tine was tedious business but it invariably put her mind in a drifty place where she could contemplate a myriad of memories. For instance, she might recall a meal shared with relatives from her childhood, her brother, Pete, hogging the mashed potatoes and brother Bob spitting milk through his nose. Those were the days. “If you could have three wishes, what would they be?” Wherever and whenever she heard this question, Barb would consider anew her answers for each wish. Good health for herself and others was one wish, world peace was another and time travel was the third. To visit the dearly departed, to play poker with her mother, grandmother, and great aunt, to ruffle the fur on the neck of her German shepherd. . . Barb believed in time travel. She had not yet experienced it per se, but she was confident that doing so was just a matter of time. *Richard Lindhorst 2001

Expression: A Vocal History

African American Idol In the 21st century, talent is discovered in very modern ways. Justin Bieber emerged from a cyberspace galaxy of YouTube videos to become one of the top thirty best-selling music artists in history, and so far, the one with the youngest career. Carrie Underwood might be a small town news anchor today, were it not for her success on Fox network’s American Idol. So the power of social media and crowdsourced mass media makes it possible for someone — from anywhere — with the right combination of talent, style and preparation to achieve incredible and unexpected success. It starts with being noticed.

All such discoveries start with just one person. And thus begins this story of Ephraim Bugumba, a singer/songwriter from southeast Africa, whose online performance caught the attention of local artist Brielle Robinson. “We first met online, when I commented on his video,” she recalls. They became mutual admirers of each other’s music and style, and agreed to a faceto-face meetup at a safe, neutral

place they both liked: Guitar Center in Algonquin. “My dad brought me,” she said, “and then he just left me alone to meet this guy.” Her father is Jeff Robinson, the Pastor of House of Restoration Church in Elgin, who is no stranger to the communicative power of internet social media. His sermons appear in videos on the church’s Facebook page. The pair developed a musical chemistry at first, and Bugumba would join the Robinsons for worship to provide music ministry with Brielle. They combined forces with the local band Accidentally on Purpose and spent time together regularly, rehearsing for the summer Battle of the Bands at Side Street Studio Arts in downtown Elgin. In April 2017, things changed. “I asked her to be my girl,” he said.

Bugumba family in South Africa. Ephraim is the youngest boy.

War I Come From Usually soft-spoken and polite, Bugumba becomes more animated in telling his back story, starting with, “I survived the Makabola Massacre.” Born in Uvira, Democratic Republic of Congo, he was just three years old when his family fled their country to escape the Second Congo War, the deadliest conflict since World War II. The entire east central part of the continent — nine countries and twenty rogue militias — was embroiled in armed conflict from 1996 until 2003, driven largely by competition for control of minerals used in high-tech manufacturing.

“We applied for refugee status with Canada and Australia and were rejected,” Bugumba recalls. “Finally we were sponsored by a Roman Catholic diocese in Alabama.” After spending two years in Mobile, the family moved to Illinois in 2014, where Ephraim graduated from Wheaton High School and spent a semester at Lewis University. He comes from a musical family that sings together every night, and his solo talents have been documented in online videos since he was a teen in Alabama. Those early efforts were covers of Christian comtemporary anthems, though later videos display more poetic choices of material. He now describes his style as a blend of different African musical styles with blues, soul and jazz, which he prefers to describe as “storytelling.”

Bugumba’s parents and six siblings moved from camp to camp as refugees, traveling through the wilderness of Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique. Separated from each other at times, they eventually found relative safety in South Africa where they stayed for ten years. But the family wanted a better life.

Teenage Storyteller in Mobile, Alabama.

Together with Robinson, he achieved great artistic success as guitarist and vocalist in last summer’s lineup of Accidentally on Purpose, advancing to the final round in the Battle of the Bands. Though the band placed second, the experience helped cement his musical partnership with Brielle.

Talent’s Biggest Game Last autumn, she suggested they try out for season 16 of American Idol, which is being relaunched on ABC after a twoyear absence from the airwaves. She registered them online as “Storyteller and Bella Jae.” In November they passed the first of several auditions at the open call at McCormick Center, and were selected by the producers to audition in front of celebrity judges Katy Perry, Lionel Ritchie and Luke Bryan in New York City.

The duo continues to work together creatively throughout the region. Bella Jae is a muralist and a painter in the northwest suburbs, but gravitates to Elgin not because she was born here, but because of the city’s love of culture. “If you’re in the suburbs and want to pursue art, Elgin is the place to go,” she says. [Possible spoiler alert.] “I just love how Elgin supports the arts, like not even Hollywood does,” gushed Storyteller. “That’s the big time, for sure, but it’s not as pure.” Storyteller is continually creating more music, and Bella Jae is thinking of bringing a live performance to the streets of downtown Elgin, where free expression is welcomed. “Everybody knows each other here.
