Artist: Bobby Rowland My name is Bobby Rowland and painting has transformed my life and continues to every day. I enjoy utilizing heavily saturated colors, bold abstract forms, and a gestural line to create interesting textures and compositions. Whether I’m working representationally or abstract, my attempt is to build up and manipulate as many layers as possible because where there’s layers, there’s depth and a story. I want my work to portray the weight of life within it by presenting tangible evidence of trial and error. The excitement of a fresh idea and a little bit of uncertainty are currently my biggest sources of inspiration. The process of making a painting work keeps me motivated and focused to see the final product. Finishing a painting and knowing it’s completely done, is sort of an indescribable feeling. An affirmation that continues to push my limits and encourages me to keep going after more elaborate projects. A Tale of Two Foxes words and pictures by Dorothy Turay They peer at you as you stroll by, guarding the Highland Avenue bridge. One faces the north side of the Fox River while the other faces south. They have each other’s backs. If you’re an Elginite or an inquisitive visitor, you must have noticed the two bronze fox sculptures on the sidewalk. They’re hard to miss and invite closer scrutiny. Perhaps you’ve wondered what they represent and how the pair came to call Elgin their home. Their story is representative of the story of Elgin itself, with one paw connecting the past to the other touching Elgin’s present. There are other fox sculptures in Elgin, from the bronze sister who lives in the Gail Borden Library’s east garden to the sad cement pair that guards the gate to the old Spring Street brick road remnant, circa 1930. But none of these has the storied history and place of pride to compare to the Highland Street brothers. Yes, they are males who share a brotherhood of sorts, for they are named for two former Elgin mayors: George Van de Voorde and Dr. Richard Verbic. However, it took a woman with a big heart and matching pocketbook to turn her dream for the people of Elgin into the solid reality of the bronze sentinels we enjoy today. Phyllis Helm Krueger is the woman behind the statues. Although she passed from this world on September 3, 2015, Krueger left Elgin with a lasting legacy. With a simple wish for the people of Elgin to enjoy the public art, she dedicated each mayor his own bronze fox. Krueger so admired Van de Voorde and Verbic, she arranged for commemorative plaques

to be attached to the granite bases of each fox, affectionately referred to as George and Dick, as a permanent tribute to the beloved mayors. Krueger had a deep respect for the two men, and they remained friends until their deaths.

Hail to the Chiefs Indeed, the mayors were men of vision and strength. Dr. Richard Verbic, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, served Elgin from 1975 to 1987. Time and again, his concern for Elgin’s citizens is evident, one example being his opposition for a Pace fare increase for Kane County in 1986. His reluctance to vote for an increase was due to his concern for the “higher percentage of poor working people” in Kane county, according to a Chicago Tribune, Oct. 7, 1986 article. Then Verbic thumbed his nose at a 1987 land grab attempt by Cook County to build a landfill nearby, preferring to keep Elgin free from other people’s garbage. Protective of his Elgin flock, Verbic suggested that the tonier suburbs seeking to offload their garbage in Kane County place the dump in their own back yards. In addition, he took his integrity to the State level when he went toe-to-toe with Dennis Hastert in the 1986 run for the 14th Congressional District seat. Verbic was incensed at the shenanigans of Hastert and his backers, when Hastert hastily bought a home in the 14th district to establish residence — mere days before the election. Although Verbic lost his bid for the seat, he mightily objected to Hastert’s dirty political games. Verbic leaves a legacy of concern for the common folk and respect for the responsibility of political office.

Summer Savings! The next great mayor to earn a fox is George Van De Voorde, who served Elgin from 1987 to 1995. Arguably, his greatest accomplishment as Mayor was to gain the last riverboat gambling license in Illinois and entice Grand Victoria Casino to park on Elgin’s shore. Lords Park is here for us to enjoy today because of Van De Voorde’s support for its restoration. However, his role as Fire Chief may be the title of which he was most proud. Serving Elgin’s fire department for a total of 37 years, Van De Voorde created the city’s first paramedic team and championed the growth of fire service. His reputation is that of a humble person who was a good listener and an inspiring leader. Delivering Van De Voorde’s eulogy, then Mayor Ed Schock stated “... the future in large part is determined by the past. Fortunately, our past included George Van De Voorde.” Schock praised him for his integrity and ability to “present both sides of the issue, never denigrating those with whom he disagreed.” Like his predecessor, Van De Voorde will be remembered as a man of strength and decency, whose love for Elgin made the City a better place for all.

The Commission On June 16, 2000, City Manager Joyce Parker sent a memo to Mayor Schock and the City Council members to consider “an offer [from Phyllis Helm Krueger] of two donated bronze fox sculptures in honor of Mayors Richard Verbic and George Van De Voorde.” In addition to honoring the former mayors, the foxes were to “symbolize

the Fox River, the area’s environment, and the region and people which [have] grown and prospered along the banks of the Fox River.” Parker recommended the “statues be placed on either or both the Highland and Chicago street bridges[,] where they would not be disturbed by future riverbank improvements.” The resolution was unanimously approved on July 12, 2000. Krueger’s life-long fascination with the foxes on the St. Charles bridge was the inspiration for her vision for Elgin’s sculptures. As quoted to writer Kara Spak of the Daily Herald, Krueger stated she liked foxes so much that she named her mom the “the fox” because her mother was so clever. Therefore, foxes became the perfect symbol for Van de Voorde and Verbic, whose leadership styles Krueger so admired. She told Spak that “Foxes are very clever and these men were very clever.” Being very clever herself, Krueger contacted Carol Morgan, an employee of Warner and Troost Monuments in East Dundee, to take care of the details. Morgan hired Ukrainian sculptor Evan Prokopav to make the bronzes. Working from a cement casting, Prokopav created the sculptures. The statues are surprisingly heavy, weighing about 300 pounds each, and the granite base — also supplied by Troost — weigh a whopping 480 pounds each. The approximate cost of the statues is thought to be $40,000, although Warner and Troost believed the cost was somewhat higher. Today, Warner and Troost is part of the Peter Troost Mon-

Summit Street (Route 58) was undergoing a widening project, and although Krueger was reassured the tree would be left untouched, she “came home to find a crew about to cut down the 100-year-old Catalpa tree that the state Department of Transportation had assured her would not be touched ...” states a upi.com article by Charmain KoBloome remembers the day sek, from Sept. 7, “someone brought 1988. A Tree Grows on Summit Phyllis Helm Krueger is an Elgin personality who should not fade quickly from memory. She was civic-minded and very passionate about issues and causes in which she felt she could make a difference. “She persevered and she was relentless — in a good way,” said Liz Marston, Director of the Elgin History Museum. Krueger “was not about herself,” continued Marston, “She was a champion of different causes.” One of her more infamous causes is the case of the Catalpa tree. Although the foxes are a tribute to Mayors Richard Verbic and George Van De Voorde, they are also a reminder of an Elgin lady whose passionate heart burned for her beloved city of Elgin. We are all the better for having Phyllis Helm Krueger as a citizen of Elgin. Her determination, intelligence, and sense of justice are just a few of the sterling qualities she shared with Elgin. Perhaps she deserves a plaque of her own at the base of her beloved Catalpa or on the Highland Street bridge at the feet of her foxes. —DT

A Hidden Historical Gem in Downtown Elgin Can you think of a building in Elgin that few people want to enter and most who do wish to leave as soon as humanly possible? No, it’s not the DMV, although that would be a good guess. The correct answer is the Elgin Police Department. Located just north of downtown at 151 Douglas Avenue, the brick building with full-length windows in front has been the home of the men and women of the City’s Police Department since 1996.

From Lanterns to Flashlights Many residents are unaware that in EPD’s lobby, to the left and right of the traditional white globe lights flanking the front desk, may be found the Elgin Police Department Museum. Formally dedicated in 2007, the Museum contains hundreds

of artifacts and photos which tell the story of Elgin’s finest from their humble beginnings in the 1800s right through to the modern era. Once inside, visitors will see the history of the Elgin PD chronicled in four display cases, each dedicated to a specific era. Two other cases contain rotating displays; one case highlights the Department’s various modes of transportation over the years while the other uses artifacts and photos to tell of several remarkable cases from Elgin’s past. Yet another case introduces visitors to Charles “Strucky” Struckman and Raymond Welch. The careers of Struckman and Welch were punctuated by cases requiring them to respond to grave danger with extraordinary courage (and, perhaps, a little luck). The Department’s Resident Officer Program of Elgin (ROPE) and K9s have their own displays on either end of the lobby.

The Elgin Police Department is fortunate to have a team of dedicated volunteers to maintain the displays in the Museum and to create new ones. The Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA) formed a Museum Committee whose members have met regularly since 2006. This team donates hundreds of hours every year to ensure that visitors to the lobby can learn all about the Elgin PD’s rich history. The Museum Committee is self-funded and uses no taxpayer money. The centerpiece of the Museum is a replica of the Elgin Police Department’s first wagon. It was built as a tribute to celebrate the Department’s history and roots. The replica is a fully-functional wagon and made its official debut in the City of Elgin’s Independence Day parade on July 4, 2013. The wagon replica was pulled by “Rosie the Mule,” and Chief Jeff Swoboda rode the length of the parade on the bench right next to the driver. The wagon has since been retired and is on display in the north end of the lobby.

Elgin’s Patrol Wagon: A Rich History The Elgin Police Department acquired its first “vehicle,” a horse-drawn patrol wagon, in 1891. The “Patrol,” as it was sometimes called, was built by local carpenter Henry Plummer for the sum of $350. The wagon caused quite a stir when it was introduced to the citizens of Elgin in the evening of May 1,

1891. Its arrival was so newsworthy, the Elgin Daily News and the Elgin Daily Courier each ran stories about it in their next day’s edition. It was described as “a thing of beauty…it gleams with the polish of burnished brass, the nickel parts scintillate in the sunshine…” While its first assignment was to haul Mayor Arwin E. Price and the entire police force around town to meet the citizenry, the wagon was purchased for more essential purposes. The “Patrol” would be used to cart prisoners to jail, but it would also pull double-duty as an ambulance to transport the sick and injured. The Elgin Daily News chose to focus more on its crime fighting purpose, writing that the wagon and its “blue coated coppers…no doubt… caused thrills of terror to chase each other up and down every vertebra in the spinal column of evil doers.” In 1899, Henry Plummer built a second wagon for the City of Elgin. This one, outfitted with rubber tires, was to be used as an ambulance. The rubber tires would provide a much smoother ride for its passengers as it was pulled over the brick-paved streets. But how was this new wagon to be funded? Elgin’s police officers came to the rescue. They organized a fundraising baseball game with the Aurora Police Department. After a big dinner at a local restaurant, the two teams met on a baseball field in Elgin. After just four innings, Aurora conceded the

game to the victorious Elgin officers after trailing 28 to 19. Ticket sales for the game raised the $400 needed to pay for the new wagon. In 1902, the City’s original wagon received a fresh paint job and its own set of rubber tires, but its days were numbered. A new contraption, the automobile, was spreading like wildfire and would lead to the demise of horse drawn-wagons. The original “Patrol” would remain in service until replaced by a Ford police-ambulance in 1915. It was believed that a motorized vehicle would be less expensive than the $900 required annually to maintain the horses. This proved prophetic as the cost to operate the Ford, including all necessary repairs, was just over $100 in 1916, its first full year of operation.

The genesis for the wagon project came from Chief Swoboda in 2011, after he visited a suburban police department and found that they had an old squad car on display in their lobby. The Chief approached the CPAAA’s Museum Committee and asked about the possibility of acquiring an old police wagon to put in the Department’s lobby.

paint the wagon, which was finally completed in November, 2012. Its maiden “test drive” proved it to be road-worthy, and it was displayed in the lobby until its appearance in the parade the following July. An adjacent display case recounts the entire project and includes a timeline along with photos showing the construction of the wagon.

Museum Hours and Contact Information The Museum is open to the public whenever the Department’s lobby is open. Those hours are currently 7 am until 10 pm. The CPAAA, which oversees the Museum Committee, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is funded by contributions and fundraising. That November, a turn of the century Amish wagon was found up in Menomonie, Wisconsin. The Museum Committee purchased the wagon and arranged for its delivery to Elgin on the back of a flatbed tow truck in February, 2012. The wagon’s box was too narrow to be a replica of Elgin’s first “Patrol,” so it was dismantled and a new one was built. The original metal parts were sandblasted and repainted for use on the new wagon. The original bench seat was saved, restored, and mounted on the new box. Volunteers worked hundreds of hours to build and

this dark comedy.

An incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet café, an innocent, well-intentioned stranger at the next table, and a dead man – with a lot of loose ends. So begins Dead Man’s Cell Phone, a wildly imaginative comedy by MacArthur “Genius” Grant recipient and Pulitzer Prize finalist, Sarah Ruhl. A work about how we memorialize the dead – how remembering changes us – and it is the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about mortality, morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world.

Dead Man’s Cell Phone, directed by Linda Collins of Elgin opens Friday, June 1st at the Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division Street. Shows continue Fridays and Saturday at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm through June 17th. All Sunday performances will be sign language interpreted for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Dead Man’s Cell Phone, to be presented by the Elgin Theatre Company in June, 2018, is a thought-provoking play that may lead viewers to question their own reliance on technology. There are two important themes that arise in Sarah Ruhl’s Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Cell phones have become an integral part of modern society, and we live in an age with these seemingly magical devices that promise constant connection yet leave many of us feeling stranded (especially if you forget your charger cord). Beyond the role of technology in our lives, this play also reminds us about the very real issue of fortunes that are made with the often-illegal sale of human organs. Though a secondary theme, it is one that cannot be overlooked because it profoundly affects the main character in

Elgin Cultural Arts Commission

Success Story:

Latino Film Festival Elgin If there is something good that had happened to The Latino Film Festival Elgin in the last 7 years, is the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission Grant that the event has received every year. When we were planning to bring the Chicago Latino Film Festival to Elgin we had the opportunity to have a test with one movie. At the end of that event, we met Councilman Richard Dunne, who informed us about the City Grant. We felt excited and nervous having the opportunity to present our project to the Arts Commission. To our surprise, the process was simple although it requires some time to prepare and put together all the documentation requested by the Commission

and to make a brief presentation to the board members explaining our event, the impact that it will have for the City of Elgin, and how the grant will be applied. A few weeks after our presentation, we received the good news from the ECAC that our application for the grant was approved. Our advice to future applicants for the grant is:   • Read carefully the simple but detailed instructions that are included with the application.   • Make sure you submit all the documents requested by the ECAC.   • Be specific in how your project will benefit the city of Elgin’s efforts to promote the arts and culture.

• Prepare your presentation and be ready to answer any questions the ECAC may ask about your event and your experience.   • Check your calendar and make sure you submit your application before the deadline included in your application package. Relax! Rest assured that the ECAC will consider carefully your application and, in the event that it couldn’t be approved, an explanation of why will be given to you along with the opportunity to apply for it next year. — Margarita Mendoza, Director The Latino Film Festival Elgin

On the Marquee: Children’s Theatre of Elgin Producer

DAVID COMINGS by Vanessa Passo Think of every great song you have ever heard. Think of the catchy pop tunes, the country classics, the rock anthems, the ballads, the downright-dance-party jams. Now, combine them all together. That’s what the Children’s Theatre of Elgin and Fox Valley Theatre Company are bringing to Elgin Community College’s Art Center beginning on June 22nd, with a show called Mashup: When Songs Collide. These youth performing arts groups will present the musical phenomenon of combining two or more songs and elements to create dynamic “mashups.” Producer of the show David Comings shared some insight about the show’s musical numbers and how they are made to be just as great as their originals, if not better.

we’re doing are highlighting some type of contrast,” Comings said. “It could be generational; for example, one of the songs combines Johnny Cash, Madonna and The Wanted. It’s three different eras, so it really should have something that appeals to just about everybody, whether they’re a performer looking for more current songs, or people in the audience who may know some of those current songs but may also know some songs that are a little older. A lot of the songs are combining those types of contrast. Most of them have generational contrast but there are sometimes other types of contrast.” One might ponder the idea of how two different genres of music, of two different time periods, can flow seamlessly together. Comings has executed that very idea.

“A mashup in music is when you combine two or more songs together to form, essentially, what becomes a new song using components of other songs,” Comings said. “It’s combining different elements.”

“One of the mashups we have is called ‘If Kesha Dies Young’ because it combines the song ‘Die Young’ by Kesha, that came out fairly recently with The Band Perry’s ‘If I Die Young’ country song from 2010.”

Comings shares a few examples of the kind of contrast the audience can expect to see.

The audience should fasten their seatbelts for this musical journey, as the cast of the Children’s Theatre of Elgin and Fox Valley Theatre Company performs twenty-nine mashups in

lowing some younger choreographers to get some things on their resume and get some professional experience, which we’re really excited about.” Comings is producing the show. “I am on the board of Children’s Theatre of Elgin and Fox Valley Theatre Company, and I’ve been on the board for a year and a half,” but excitingly enough, “This is the first show that I’m bringing to life for Children’s Theatre of Elgin and Fox Valley Theatre Company,” Comings said. There are many pieces to the puzzle in order to create a picture-perfect finished product. Comings shares more about his team who will help him achieve this.

“The director of the show, Sarah Robertson, is an alum of Children’s Theatre of Elgin and Fox Valley Theatre Company, so she’s overseeing the direction,” Comings said. “I’m producing the show in a holistic fashion, and for this particular show, I created the show and selected the content for the show,” Comings said. “I’ve hired both a director, and then a musical director, Adam Huckeby, for the show. The musical director and his staff are leading the music rehearsals. The director is overseeing the show, as a whole, and overseeing the choreographers that we’ve hired.” When asked about any favorite numbers in the show, Comings described several. “I would tend toward lean to ones that I’ve created; I’d say right from the show opener is a mashup between ‘Jessie’s Girl’ by Rick Springfield and ‘Shut Up and Dance’ by Walk The Moon,” Comings said. “That one has probably resonated best of the ones that I’ve created, but there are a lot of them that I like. Another mashup that we’re using is called ‘Cut to More Than a Feeling’ because it combines Boston’s 1976 hit ‘More than a Feeling,’ this big rock anthem, with Carly Rae Jepsen from just two years ago, ‘Cut to the Feeling.’ The lyrics go together, the song goes together, and I’m looking forward to that one as well. My other favorite would probably be a mashup called ‘Hello Broken Dreams,’ which combines Adele’s

4.6

‘Hello’ with Green Day’s ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams.’” Children and young adults getting to combine music of their own generation with music beyond their years is what truly produces a fun, exciting experience for not only the audience, but the performers themselves. “What kind of started this — what kind of helped create the concept of the show— is the country has been getting more and more divided. We’re kind of showing how you can bring together elements that you wouldn’t think could work together and showing that they can work together. There will be elements of that theme throughout the show as well,” Comings said. “There’s another mashup we have, it’s called ‘Armagangnam.’ We’re going to have fun because we’re combining some of the worst songs ever made into a mashup that’s going to sound great. It uses ‘Gangnam Style’ [by PSY], which is the music accompaniment for it, but we’re putting in a lot of songs that, I would say, are ‘guilty pleasure’ songs. That mashup will actually be in four separate languages.” Comings’s background allows him to take what he already knows, and reproduce it in a way that’s fun, fresh and exciting. “I was a performer growing up in song-and-dance reviews. I grew up in Elmhurst, so I was in concert choir, show choir, all of that stuff. So, these are the shows that really appeal to me a lot. CTE and Fox Valley have combined on these types of songand-dance reviews many times in the past and it’s a familiar format that we’re bringing back, but we’re bringing it back in this new way.” — VP Tickets for ECC Arts Center’s production of Mashup: When Songs Collide are $12 / $10. The Clowder A group of cats is called a clowder. The Clowder is an alternative band coming out of Elgin, IL. Their unique yet classic sound is the result of the ever evolving music made by the bands chief songwriter, Frank Liston. Frank, also the lead singer and guitarist originally brought in Bobby Gancarz looking for a session drummer for a solo project. The two decided that their combined individual styles had potential as a band and so in early 2013 they started The Clowder. For the next couple years they adapted new techniques to sculp the gritty soulful style that can be heard on their debut album, Funky Mystery Music. 9p, Danny’s on Douglas, 231 Douglas Ave. 847.742.5400 dannyspizzaelgin.com

Pratt’s Castle, 1262 Cedar Avenue

COLOR MY CITY

Illustrations by Madeline Richmond

IDEA BOX

What is the castle tower made of? What color is this material? Are the windows dark, or lit by torch or candle light? Draw the trees that form a horizon on the other side of the Fox River. World War I veteran and history buff Harold S. Pratt built this replica of a medieval castle around 1937. Some say it was modeled after castles from the Rhine River valley. Mr. Pratt stored his collection of military and medieval artifacts in here, but lived in a house on Douglas Avenue. The structure includes a small moat, and walled courtyard, cottage and boathouse. Neighbors described underground tunnles leading to the woods, and chests full of coins. See also: historicelgin.com Š M.E. Richmond Art. All rights reserved. Used with permission.

Hosted for many years in our community by NHS of the Fox Valley who closed their doors last fall, the DNA has picked up the torch and adopted the project, giving it a renewed mission. Our goal is to utilize this annual project to reach out into the neighborhoods surrounding our downtown, positively impact maintenance conditions for mutual benefit and build relationships in our community beyond the boundaries of Downtown. This year the DNA partners with our neighbors to the east, the Gifford Park Association as well as Elgin Community Network and the City of Elgin to focus on 11 properties in highly visible areas of the Gifford Park Neighborhood along Villa, E Chicago Street and more. Examples of projects include repairing and removing broken fences, landscaping overhauls and painting porches. We have a big job to do here in Elgin making our City the best it can be and we are going to need your help to do it! Volunteer signup will be posted soon. Please save the date on June 16th and join us! Make a friend by helping a neighbor. 9a, Gifford Park Neighborhood, 355 DuPage Street 847.488.1456 downtownelgin.com Literacy Connection Tutor Training Become a Literacy Connection Volunteer Tutor in this 12-hour training workshop. “Do you accept the Elgin Doller?” To mark our third anniversary, BRAVO Magazine will introduce the Elgin Doller in our July 2018 edition. We’ll print one Elgin Doller in every issue. This currency-like looking double-sided note is a beautifully designed tribute to the past, present and future of Elgin. Using a sharp scissors or hobby knife, you simply cut the Doller out of its page in BRAVO, and put it in your wallet, pocket or purse.

Screening of Dairies to Prairies Dairies to Prairies is a feature-length documentary film and companion traveling exhibit telling a nearly forgotten story about Elgin’s first wealth, the dairy industry, and how land use and agriculture are changing rapidly in Kane County. Did you know that Elgin once set the national price for butter through the Elgin Board of Trade? Or that the Gail Borden Public Library was named after the inventor of condensed milk? Or how many acres of forest preserves and restored prairies are managed by the Kane County Forest Preserves? The Dairies to Prairies project will premiere at the Gail Borden Public Library. This documentary film and traveling exhibit is created by The Elgin History Museum and Grindstone Productions. Please register. 2.30p-4.30p, GBPL Meadows Comm.

BRAVO Serial Fiction: “Victory Lane” There was a crude, homemade workbench in Jax’s garage, where he tended to put everything down. It was cluttered with tools, cans of paint, empty bottles, yard waste bags, receipts from the hardware store — anything but a pair of gloves. “Toni, have you seen my gloves?” he yelled across the yard. “I just had ‘em yesterday.” Toni was coming out of the back door carrying a set of wind chimes and a chair from the dinette. “I don’t know where you put your gloves,” she huffed. Jax cussed unintelligibly. “Why don’t you borrow a pair from Paco? Didn’t he say, if you ever needed anything, just ask?” “I can’t ask him right now.” After a short trip to the store, Jax returned with two new pairs of leather gloves. He laid one pair on the workbench in the garage, put on the other pair and walked out to the hedge with a spade and a bow saw. About twelve feet of vegetation had been cleared from the hedge along Jax’s side — just a little more than half its width. The exposed ground was lumpy and covered with the coarse stubble of all the grass, weeds and wildflowers that he had removed since May. He had finally cut back enough growth to reach the bases of the old grapevines, whose long branches and canes had already produced enough wood cuttings to build three large fires in his backyard. Near the ground, they were as thick as tree trunks, but they tapered sharply as they rose. Jax knelt beside each vine and sawed it off, leaving a stump about eight or nine inches high. The wood was orange on the inside and the saw cuts oozed so much watery sap that it dribbled down the bark in some places. The ground was highest in the middle of the hedge where the grapevines were planted, and every time Jax stood up, he could easily see into his neighbor’s yard on the other side. Paco was sitting in a lawn chair in his open garage doorway, reading a newspaper. They didn’t make eye contact. It took Jax all day on the first

growth that was starting to appear, mainly along his side where he had begun the project more than two months before.

Part Three:

Entrenched by Mark Averill Saturday of June to dig out three of the grapevines. Each one had several thick roots growing downward in all directions from the stump, and he had to remove enough dirt to reach a point where the root was thin enough to cut through. Over and over again he positioned the blade of his shovel over a root nearly two feet deep in the ground and stomped on the shoulder until it gave way. As each stump was removed, it left a knee-deep pit in the ground. The following Saturday he resumed his project and succeeded in getting the other three grapevine stumps out. Exhausted, he didn’t bother to backfill any of the holes. On Sunday after supper, Paco and Teresa took their usual walk down Front Street. It seemed like nobody was home at Jax and Toni’s place, so they walked up on the hedge to see what Jax had been up to. The row of six holes was surrounded on both sides by piles of dirt. The six stumps were scattered helter-skelter and had begun to dry out in the summer sun.

mined,” he observed. “Can’t you say something to him?” Teresa wondered. “Maybe he would stop at this point and leave us this piece on our side.” “I tried to change his mind. I can’t talk to him now. We have to let this run its course.” Their conversation was overheard by the Maltese, who jumped on the back of the sofa and began barking intensely inside the front window of the house. Paco watched for a few seconds, then strolled toward the back yard to look at the makeshift fire ring that Jax had created out of cement blocks. It was full of ashes and charcoal residue from burnt grapevine logs, and still more wood was piled up a few feet away. He reached down, picked up a single left-handed leather glove that lay on the grass and examined it. It showed lots of wear, but the leather still smelled new. The right-handed glove was not there.

“They look like witches’ heads,” Teresa snarled. “This looks like a grave yard.”

“Papi!” Teresa called from the sidewalk. He laid the glove on one of the cement blocks, and they continued their walk around the block.

Paco looked up and down the area of excavated ground and over at the remaining strip of standing vegetation that bordered his yard. “He’s very deter-

By the end of the month, Jax had cleared the entire hedge, front to back and side to side. The pits were backfilled and he had mowed down the new

The last weekend of June was hot and the sun was bright. Paco walked outside Saturday morning wearing large, dark sunglasses and watched from his driveway while Jax connected two fifty foot hoses together and carried a two gallon jug of concentrated herbicide to the edge of Victory Lane. “Good morning!” Jax said loudly and defiantly. Paco sipped from a bottle of iced tea and said nothing in return. He screwed a gun-shaped nozzle to the end of the hose and attached a long plastic tube to its base. Turning toward the house, he yelled “Okay, turn it on!” The length of hose stiffened as it filled with water. After shaking the jug for a few seconds, he removed the cap and inserted the tube. With the jug in one hand and the hose nozzle in the other, Jax started spraying. He started along Paco’s border first, being careful not to get any overspray on his lawn. They exchanged no words during the ninety minutes it took to cover the entire area with herbicide. By late afternoon Sunday, Victory Lane was completely dry, and the stubble was a uniform shade of pale brown. That evening after he returned from his walk, Paco made a telephone call. “You know that job we talked about?” he said to the person on the other end of the line. “Can you start tomorrow?” BRAVO serial fiction presents an original short story by a local writer in a series of short sections of approximately 1000 words each. A new chapter of “Victory Lane” will appear each month from April to August 2018. From This River Town

Open Season by Mary Ellen Goodwill

My youngest brother Bob and I would make the sounds puhshoo, puh-shoo and point our index fingers, thumbs up, to shoot bad guys or each other or an imaginary bear in the woods. We would run with our guns, left hand for him, right for me, guns that required no ammunition but plenty of plosive whistling sounds which would become more emphatic with our dislike for the real or imagined target. Ten minutes of puh-shoos, half an hour of puh-shoos, handguns toward the garage roof, the tree stump, the bushes. “You go that way, I’ll go this way. We’ll meet at the rock.” Off we would run puh-shooing louder with our distance from one another. Run, fake getting hit, tumble, moan, jump up and run and shoot some more. Eventually we did get cap guns and we ran with them: snap, snap, snap, crack, crack, crack but when the rolls of caps were gone we didn’t have the patience to reload. It was back to the puh-shoos only with a toy gun instead of a literal handgun. My two oldest brothers shot game with their .22 rifles and chipmunks with their BB guns. Brother Pete was a wise guy who crossed the line with me more than once, but a particular time involved his BB gun which was lying on the bench by the kitchen table. I was six or seven and he had gotten under my skin. I remember him standing by the door next to the cabinet that held the cups and plates. I was aiming the gun at him and he was suddenly coldly serious and completely still saying, “Do NOT shoot that ... “ I shot it. The BB lodged in the cabinet about four inches from his right eye.

Boy, was I surprised. But not as surprised as Pete. I’ve never owned a gun or had a gun in any house of mine. To me, guns are heavy, cold and frightening. Lately, however, I have been puh-shooing again. First with the old reliable index-finger handgun and then with the TV remote I have been practicing pulling the remote out of the back pocket and the side pocket of my bibs. Turns out the side pocket works better if I position it so the top third is hanging out. “Puh-shoo, puh-shoo, puhshoo,” I’ve been saying during the evening news and talk shows, pointing my high-tech laser gun toward the TV screen. “Puh-shoo, puh-shoo, you dunderhead; go back to Texas. Puh-shoo, puh-shoo, you bully; your face would crack if you ever smiled. Puh-shoo, puh-shoo you jerk; shouting doesn’t better your argument. Puh-shoo, puhshoo, you lame-o, you idiot, you chowder head, you maggot, you sniveling butt wipe.” I puh-shoo people and I puhshoo formats and I puh-shoo networks. However, if I’m watching TV from the kitchen with no remote, no problem. I simply put down my chopping knife and pull out old trusty, my buddy from the yard and woods back in the Berkshires in the early fifties. Index finger out, thumb up, left eye closed, weight balanced, “Puh-shoo, puh-shoo you sad and sickening lying weasels.” Miss Goodwill’s novels can be found at Town House Books in St. Charles, on Amazon, and at Gail Borden and ECC libraries.

This Lane Ends words and pictures by Mark Averill History, geography, economics and politics covers most of the reasons why some streets never make it all the way to Point B. Blocked by waterways, railways, property lines or city limits, dead end streets aren’t dead at all — they’re underrated destinations where vibrant life can actually be found.

parked in the shade where the pavement ends; beyond it lies a few acres of green space that surround an urban farm field. With the groans and sighs of the Jane Addams Tollway to cancel out the sound of gas-powered tillers, local gardeners tend their individual rectangular plots here from May through September. While rows of tomatoes, peppers and leaf lettuce slowly sweeten in the sun, you can walk barefooted across the grass and touch the back (or is it the front?) of the faux stone wall that separates you from eight lanes of high speed vehicular traffic.

Bluff Spring Fen.

Looking into the Fen from here is like looking into another latitude as the Spring rains have flooded Poplar Creek into something like a bayou. The trail ends at the foot of an unpaved driveway belonging to a lovely secluded home, and where four red diamond signs should be, there is only a fallen tree. This place should only be visited by bicycle.

Almora Heights is a small, quiet subdivision southwest of the corner of Randall Road and Highland Avenue. Behind the late twentieth century homes sitting on large lots, Almora Terrace meets Brookside Drive, aptly named for its proximity to an unnamed stream that flows in from Udina and meanders eastward where it empties into Tyler Creek. A wide grassy, park-like green space expands in both directions from the corner,

yielding a view to freshly plowed farm fields to the west. Hidden just out of sight from the road is a foot path leading through a pasture woods to a tiny plank bridge that spans the stream, and connects to a path up the opposite bank to Howard Avenue. In a part of town where cars are a necessity, only a few neighbors would know this is here.

Orchard Lane If you could wade this stream for a half mile to the west, you could find Orchard Lane. For the rest of us, the journey by car takes you down Old Barn Road past spacious residential estates to a long, winding stretch of sun-bleached pavement covered by a web of black lines, where Public Works crews have meticulously traced every crack with patching tar. The lines are easily visibile from space.

FATHER'S DAY

At the end of Orchard Lane is where the city meets the country in a slightly muddy gap in a fenceline. The terminus is actually a tee, just broad enough for two cars to park or one to turn around. One side of the tee points toward the unnamed stream and its surrounding forest preserve land. The other side directs your gaze onto a casual residential garden where an apiarist has posted a sign beside a fox sculpture.

in Wing Park, and if you could follow the road another 750 feet you would cross Tyler Creek and come out just below the bandshell. Though there are no picnic tables, parking lots or rest rooms here, this side of the park is still a serene place to take your lunch and glimpse the violets and goldenrod that now cover the Abbott Drive that wasn’t.

sturdy modern bridge that’s been in place since October 1991, according to dates scrawled into the cement slabs. Moreover, extruded curbs were laid on the other side of the bridge, extending hundreds of feet into what is now a lush, dense and flowery woodlot. A grassy path follows what would have been the Lyle Avenue sidewalk, past abundant hiding places filled with wildflowers and birdsong, until it opens onto the gravel bed of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Directly across the tracks is the Big Timber station.

Cedar Avenue Before the Northwest Tollway cut across Elgin in 1958, the Fox River was the biggest obstacle to surface transportation, and many streets terminate along its banks. “Drink and Talk Smart!”

“No Outlet,” there is an outlet here: the Fox River Trail, which extends for miles in both directions. This is one of the places where a street intersects the Trail, but Cedar Avenue doesn’t have far to go: it leads to a cluster of riverside cottages and ... a castle with gargoyles and a little moat. Built in 1937, the castle was originally a private museum that contained Harold Pratt’s collection of medieval artifacts. Dead end streets are lovely in the Spring: the creeks are full, the flowers are in bloom, and trails you find are still passable. But the beauty of a dead end street is in contemplating the memory of where it once went, or the fantasy of where it wanted to go. These places exist at the boundary between the paved and the unpaved worlds, where all the problems and possibilities of Earthly transport come together in the shadow of four red diamonds. —MA
