The three days of the event dedicated to workshops, educational seminars, conferences and the exhibition will allow specialised logistics, transport and infrastructure suppliers to network, develop partnerships and conduct business with top Southeast Asian logistics procurement executives from leading cargo-owning companies. The event has also been recognized by the governments of Malaysia and Singapore, with Klang Port Malaysia as the host port of the important summit between the members of the China Malaysia Port Alliance. It has also received the support of the Ministry of Transport Malaysia, Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau and Malaysian Oil & Gas Engineering Council. Malaysia has experienced an average growth rate of around 5 percent across the last decade, thanks to an impressive range of government-led investments.

Under the government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), it plans to attract US$444 billion worth of investment, reflecting a similar trend across the ASEAN economic community. Southeast Asia is one of the fastest-growing markets for project cargo transport and infrastructure development in a world economy that has largely flatlined. With an average annual economic growth rate of over 5 percent, the countries that comprise this dynamic region represent a thriving trade and economic hub. I would like also to express my appreciation to the organiser of Breakbulk Southeast Asia and also to others who have provided their valuable input and support to the formulation of the Economic Transformation Plan (ETP). I am confident that Breakbulk Southeast Asia will shape even greater collaboration and partnership with domestic and international participations for Malaysia. Sekian Terima Kasih

“The logistics industry is crucial to stimulate trade, facilitate business efficiency and spur economic growth.”
AS CHAIRMAN of the National Logistics Taskforce, one of my aspirations for Malaysia is to develop the local logistics sector into a leading logistics service provider for South East Asia. To support this, the Government is actively implementing the Logistics and Trade Facilitation Masterplan 2015-2020 which will provide the strategic framework and roadmap to elevate Malaysia to becoming the “Preferred Logistics Gateway to Asia” by 2020 and beyond. In addition, Malaysia’s strategic location, steady economic growth, good regional connectivity and strong transport infrastructure are important factors that will help to accelerate growth in the logistics sector. Malaysia is the world’s 24th largest trading nation, which emphasises the logistics industry’s importance to the Malaysian economy. The logistics industry is crucial to stimulate trade, facilitate business efficiency and spur economic growth. Recognising this, the Government is also working closely with the private sector to create an integrated logistics hub and to ensure seamless connectivity to further boost Malaysia’s trade. I congratulate Breakbulk Southeast Asia in hosting the threeday event with the participation

This event will contribute in turning Malaysia closer to the latest developments in the logistic industry as well as meeting point for logistics business networking opportunities. DEAR BREAKBULK Southeast Asia Exhibitors and Delegates: Welcome to Breakbulk’s inaugural event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is wonderful to be joining you in this dynamic, fascinating region. As we all know, the breakbulk and project logistics industry has been dealing with tough times, and it’s been a year of belt-tightening for most. Gachter’s rigorous, in-depth understanding of the project market, energy prices, and the procurement supply chain will be brought to bear for the benefit of Breakbulk’s delegates. Following our keynote, logistics and port executives detail several complex cargo moves associated with one of Malaysia’s key megaprojects, RAPID. Also on day one, Colin MacIsaac leads a VIP shipper’s panel delving into ASEAN logistics challenges, and Henrik Pederson of BBC Chartering will moderate an in-depth discussion on the pressures facing the heavylift niche. Micro-Seminar: Breakbulk Technology Breakthroughs New technology done right leads to new efficiencies. Our experts provide insight into the effects of new technologies on two key project industry segments.
PART I: PROJECT LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT Use the right processes, and the right technological tools, for the modern project logistics industry. Email and spreadsheets are the past: the future of logistics lies beyond these oldfashioned methods. Peter Bouwhuis President & CEO, XELLZ BV Peter Bouwhuis has more than 35 years of industry and project freight experience. Educated as an electronic engineer and logistics manager, Bouwhuis is also a certified customs broker, customs compliance expert and European VAT expert. He is President & CEO of XELLZ, a project logistics management company with head office in The Netherlands. Prior to that he was the global AVP Transport & Logistics responsible for global heavy-lift and project cargo at ABB HQ in Zurich, Switzerland for six years. From 2000-2003, Bouwhuis worked as EMEA Manager Logistics for ABB LUMMUS GLOBAL (now CB&I Lummus). He was Vice President and Director of Projects and Co-Founder of EP-Team Inc., which was sold to BNSF Logistics. He held a senior position with Schenker as Project Director Europe, and was CEO and founder of Skylon International Forwarders BV. Bouwhuis has worked as senior logistics project specialist and consultant with EXEL Projects, and has been involved as a consultant and senior specialist in project logistics product trainer to ShippersForum. Bouwhuis started his career in the industry in the late 1970s and has traveled and worked on projects in remote locations in more than 60 countries.
PART II: BACK OFFICE AUTOMATION FOR SHIPPING COMPANIES With so much discussion in the shipping industry focused around onboard automation and the trend towards digitalisation on vessels, companies are failing to recognise where automation and digitalisation has great potential to add value to their bottom line: in the back office and administrative processes that facilitate all operations. Lars Fischer, Managing Director of Softship Data Processing explores how shipping companies can use these technologies. Lars Fischer Managing Director, Softship Data Processing PTE Lars Fischer has 23 years’ experience in developing IT and software solutions for the shipping industry, in technical engineering roles and in commercial management and business development positions. He joined Softship in Singapore in 1998, tasked with building the company’s footprint and profile in the region, and has helped Softship to develop into the leading software solutions provider for the maritime industry. He manages a staff of 20 over offices in Singapore and Manilla, while overseeing the organisation’s global sales and marketing strategy. Softship is the leading provider of software solutions and related services to the international liner shipping and agency markets. Softship’s software products have been installed in more than 120 shipping companies, and are designed to streamline and deliver efficiencies to the many processes that comprise liner shipping as well as providing a range of business management tools that allow shipping executives to fully analyse their commercial and operational activities. Softship’s modular format enables clients to purchase or lease only the solutions they require. Software can be easily modified to meet specific market or company requirements. Packaged suites of software applications are available for principals, agents and NVOCCs. Tailored versions are also available for break bulk and project cargo operators.

Stormy Seas: Rivals, Regulations and Risk The seas may be calming, but the heavy-lift and multipurpose niche still faces stormy weather on several fronts. Looming IMO regulations on ballast water and sulfur levels could cost the industry billions over the next decade. Overcapacity and low freight rates continue to fuel competition from other sectors, while a cruel debt overhang pushes industry consolidation. Who will survive? What will the sector look like a few years down the road? Our panel of experts shares their views.
