Breakbulk Europe 2022: Rotterdam Visitors Guide 3
WELCOME to
To all Breakbulk visitors to Rotterdam, returnees and first timers alike, Welcome to Rotterdam, a city like no other.
From a heartless city to a city at the heart of the European economy, Rotterdam is the city where people take pride in a hands-on mentality, in perseverance and in working hard. But Rotterdam is much more than a city of roughnecks and hard workers. Here, you will find culture alongside hard labour, a lively nightlife alongside manufacturing industry and architecture alongside infrastructure. Rotterdam is for everyone. And in Rotterdam, everything is possible. This is the city that beats to the rhythm of the hearts of its inhabitants. Rotterdam has also become a city of culinary and cultural delights. On the banks of the Maas, you will find dishes from all corners of the world.
From a quick snack in multicultural suburbs to star-rated dishes with panoramic views of the magnificent skyline. The museums are among the very best both in terms of premises and collections and when it comes to hosting international events, Rotterdam is the place to be. The water of the River Maas cuts right through the city. The river is of great symbolic value: at the foot of the bridges over the river, the marines held out for days against the German invasion. The intransigence of the armed forces speaks volumes. The people of Rotterdam, or Rotterdammers, are not easily intimidated and do not give up. Adversity hardens us. That is why the city’s motto is ‘stronger through battle’.
We are building the city with an eye to the future, and water has played a major role in this since time immemorial. Rotterdam and the Maas are a double entity: water brings work. Here lies the largest port outside Asia, a port that serves as an artery for the European hinterland and is of vital importance to millions

of people and to the economy of the entire European Union.
Rotterdammers are a proud people. And rightly so. The city is bustling and thriving, it breathes and moves to the rhythm of its inhabitants. The people make the city and they are proud to show it to anyone who passes by and takes the time to stop, look around and feel what makes this city what it is: A breeding ground of perseverance and fighting spirit, a place to which people from all parts of the world have lost their hearts. It is a place where they can be whoever they want to be, because in the streets of this city, everyone is above all a Rotterdammer. THE FUTURE ANCHORS
HERE. As Breakbulk Europe’s Content Team’s agenda for the 2022 event will focus heavily on innovation and discovery, we’ve certainly come to the right place: Rotterdam. The Rotterdam Makers District will be a key focus of the Breakbulk content team for its first event at Rotterdam Ahoy. Developed by the Municipality of Rotterdam and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the district comprises RDM Rotterdam, or RDM, and MerweVierhavens, or M4H, and is the place in the region for the innovative manufacturing industry. A recent Breakbulk tour of the district witnessed the progress of innovative, sustainable projects by students and start-up companies, covering 3D printing of propellors to enable ships to be fixed out at sea, 3D printing of coral reef to replace the historical damage in our oceans, floor tiles that capture energy and are made using 50 percent of plastic from ocean clean-up programs, as well as wind turbines suitably sized for ships and residential areas. “We are looking forward to hosting some of these start-up projects at our Discovery Zone at Breakbulk Europe in May as well as the students who will be participating in our Education Day,” said Victoria Pope, Breakbulk’s head of content. Breakbulk recently caught up with the Port of Rotterdam Authority to talk about the district. Register at europe.breakbulk.com

Q: How can an entrepreneur approach RDM and M4H, can you include us in that process? Entrepreneurs who are already established in the Rotterdam Makers District can contact the program office and use our community platform ‘Inside’; where supply and demand from all companies in the Makers District, and our partners in the innovation ecosystem come together. For (new) initiatives and parties that fit within our strategic priorities – energy, mobility, circularity, and the built environment – we are constantly looking for suitable development opportunities and real estate locations in the area. This is custom work and contact is made via info@rotterdammakersdistrict.com, all applications are assessed by a sales and initiative team. Q: Can you give examples where exploration and experimentation at RDM has led to real industry solutions? Initiatives from incubator and accelerator programs, such as PortXL, YES!Delft, and from the innovation ecosystem of the Municipality and Port of Rotterdam Authority, develop and test prototypes at RDM, grow and move to M4H to scale up. For instance, at RDM, RAMLAB is testing techniques in 3D printing here for efficient production and logistics of spare parts for ships, in the Innovation Dock, XLabs works with robotization on offshore wind farms, and in the Loft, RDM Next helps SMEs to seize the opportunities that digitization brings. Q: Do M4H and RDM have distinct roles? If so, how does the uniqueness of each area show itself? Companies can experiment with new products or processes in the Rotterdam Makers District. New technologies are devised, tested, and applied.
10 Breakbulk Europe 2022: Rotterdam Visitors Guide
These innovative technologies are based on digitalization, robotization, additive manufacturing, and on the application of new, sustainable energy and materials. This makes the Makers District a testing ground and showcase for the new economy – visible to everyone. RDM is a hotspot for innovation in the port, where start-ups, corporations, and education work together. The Municipality and the Port Authority want to develop M4H into an innovative environment to live and work, optimally equipped for the innovative manufacturing industry and with a mix of working, living, culture, catering, sports, and education. Together they form an energetic district with an impact on both city and port. Q: Can you tell us how RDM works directly with the local educational institutions? Can you tell us something about the Erasmus Center and how it has developed and examples of success stories there? The added value of the Makers District is not only in the physical space, but also in a business climate that stimulates and strengthens collaboration and entrepreneurship. Cooperation with knowledge and educational institutions in the region is crucial. RDM is founded by the Port of Rotterdam Authority in collaboration with Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and Technology College, with the aim of creating an inspiring environment for technology education, because working with the latest

transshipment of fruit, now offer space for initiatives and entrepreneurs working on energy transition, new forms of mobility and circularity. These monuments make the area recognizable and special, a positive distinguishing factor.
The presence of knowledge institutions and education throughout the Makers District provides a context-rich learning environment and thus contributes to the innovation environment. The Erasmus Center for Entrepreneurship, located in the Science Tower, also plays an important connecting role.
Q: As versatile as the Makers District seems, how will the area build and maintain an ideal work-life balance?
The aim is to create a community of successful and innovative entrepreneurs, integrated into the wider regional innovation ecosystem of companies, knowledge institutions and funding sources. Q: It is an intriguing aspect in which the past of the area becomes monuments for future generations, such as Ferro, the Citrus facilities and the piers and basins for events. We are building on the remnants of the past; it is fertile ground for innovation. We try to learn from history and tap into the unique, distinctive qualities that remind us. The remnants of the extraction of fossil energy, such as the Ferro gas holder, and the monumental Rotterdam Citrus Auction as a symbol for the storage and

M4H is an area in transition from a former port and industrial area to a new, energetic district to live, work and learn. The M4H spatial framework, established in 2019 by the Port Authority and the Municipality of Rotterdam, outlines what M4H will look like in the future. Each sub-area has its own ratio between living, working, and learning, which gives the area its own character. This character varies from a greater focus on housing, combined with (limited) workspace and studios, to the sub-area Galileïpark with room for scale-ups and housing and facilities for larger manufacturing companies. The Rotterdam Makers District is developing into a lively area with a wide range of amenities, living, learning, culture, and events. A City Innovating For A Sustainable Tomorrow
Rotterdam is a city that embraces innovation – it is part of its DNA. The city was forced to rebuild after the destruction of World War II, breaking with the past and opting for new forms of urban design; an architecture based on the principles of light, air and space. Walking the city, that ground-breaking, creative spirit can still be keenly felt. As we build towards a sustainable future, Rotterdam’s proud tradition for innovation is evident everywhere you look.

THE ERASMUS BRIDGE FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES
One of the hidden Instagram spots we have discovered recently is the site pictured here. From this perspective you can capture the Erasmus Bridge from below, which makes for a unique image. You will have to lie on the ground to take this photo, but the result is definitely worth the effort!
BOIJMANS VAN BEUNINGEN DEPOT
Since autumn 2021, this architectural masterpiece has been fully devoted to housing the art collection of the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum. The 40m-high roof of the mirrored building features a roof garden which commands a panoramic view of the city and its port.

THE EUROMAST
The Euromast is a sight well-known to almost everybody. The highest building in Rotterdam, and incidentally also the tallest observation tower in the Netherlands, it is a household name in the city. Standing on the viewing platform at the top of the Euromast, you will have a splendid view of the Rotterdam skyline and can take marvellous photos from the park. ERASMUS BRIDGE THE EUROMAST
THE HOFBOGEN
THE HOFBOGEN
The environment surrounding The Hofbogen is popular with Rotterdam residents, and yet this Rotterdam highlight is not as well-known as it might be. The Hofbogen viaduct park is situated on the roof of the former Hofplein Station, from which trains once plied between Rotterdam and Scheveningen for a century. There are several photohotspots here, including the bright yellow Luchtsingel, a wooden pedestrian bridge with a length of 390m. The Old Dutch harbour in Historic Delfshaven is almost completely unknown to those not living in Rotterdam. That is a pity, because this splendid Rotterdam site with its picturesque marina of Historic Delfshaven also has a story to tell. The Piet Heynsbrug is perhaps the most eye-catching feature.
OLD HARBOUR
Located near the Markthal and the Cube Houses is yet another wonderful highlight: the Old Harbour. This is one of the oldest harbours in the city, and is surrounded by the intriguing amalgam of historic buildings and modern architecture typical of Rotterdam. For the most attractive view, walk to the Spanjaardsbrug, which commands a splendid panoramic view of the entire Old Harbour.

At a restaurant, if you received good service or thoroughly enjoyed the food, it’s customary to give a small tip–around 5-10 percent of the bill. If your service was just average, round up the bill or leave some change. In a bar, you may already be feeling a little generous, but it’s not expected to tip per drink in the Netherlands. Instead, if you’re running a tab, you may like to round up the bill at the end of the night. Alternatively, throw a few coins in a tip jar— your bartender will appreciate it! Dutch taxis are already expensive due to high gas prices and taxes, so drivers don’t expect tips, but you can round up the bill or tip one or two euros if you like. And yes, Uber is available in Rotterdam.
