WELCOME to BREAKBULK AFRICA
Janet Nodar
Content Director Breakbulk Events & Media Welcome to Breakbulk Africa. It’s been a challenging year for the breakbulk and project cargo industry, as oil prices and freight rates fluctuate and geopolitical stability remains elusive in so many regions. What is next for Africa? Where do opportunities and bright spots lie in these interesting times? Our exhibition program, which now includes new micro-seminars and exhibitor-led sessions, digs into these key questions. Our day one keynote is Professor Lyal White, Director of the Center for Dynamic Markets at the Gordon Institute of Business Science with the University of Pretoria, and a well-known commentator on Southern African business and economics. Panel discussions on energy and mining, and a focused super-session on doing business in Francophone Africa (in French with English translation), round out day one. On day two, Kudzanayi Bangure opens the program with a regional rail outlook. Bangure is Project Manager (Rail) for the Africa Infrastructure Desk for the NEPAD Business Foundation. Following that, our experts will delve into the ever-vexing puzzle of African shipping. In the afternoon, Nivan Moodley, Director with MAC Consulting, delivers a compelling outlook for southern Africa’s current oil and gas economy and the knock-on effects for the breakbulk/project cargo trade. Following that, an expert panel will close Breakbulk Africa’s program with a close look at developments at key regional ports. Thank you for joining us at Breakbulk Africa 2016. We invite you to mingle with our shippers and supply chain logistics experts, build relationships, discover new business opportunities, strengthen your team and support your clients with everything Breakbulk has to offer.

WELCOME to BREAKBULK AFRICA
Lars Greiner
Content Consultant Breakbulk Events & Media Dear Colleagues, Welcome to Breakbulk Africa. The 14 months since our last African conference have been extremely defining, not only for South Africa, but for Africa and the whole world. It seems we are not quite through the hard times yet. However, we believe that in all adversity there is opportunity, and it is gatherings such as this one that allow opportunities to be realized. During the two days of our conference, we will share insights into where experts think the continent, and the project industry, are going over the next couple of years, to help us all find direction and hope in these difficult times. Many of our speakers are acclaimed in Africa, and even worldwide, as leaders in their fields. We have asked them to forecast how they see their industry or sector developing and to give you, our logistics colleagues, their insights on what to expect. We’ve asked them to focus on Africa as a whole, rather than on what divides us. We have also introduced a series of micro-seminars focused on educating and updating the industry, and particularly students and industry freshmen, on basic requirements when undertaking international movements. We encourage you to find one or two of these that may interest you or your team members and juniors, and take the time for an update on the latest requirements. At the end of the day, this is your conference, a chance for you to meet and mingle with old friends and new peers from Africa and further afield, in an effort to strengthen the project logistics industry in Africa. Please be at ease and enjoy the surroundings and stimulating discussions about the industry and work that makes us such specialized African experts. Welcome, colleagues. Yours sincerely,

The world remains focused on Africa as a growth area, but with the slowdown in commodity and oil prices, questions hang over its growth. Many speak of the “dutch disease” affecting the continent in that too many African economies are based on the exploration and development of a single industry or even commodity and its effect on development in Africa. What is expected in the next 18 months to four years? What types of projects are likely to take place during a prolonged slump? Despite the downturn, 14 coal-fired power stations are being built in sub-Saharan Africa, along with a slew of wind- and gas-driven plants, and more are on the books. What power projects are planned, who are they for – any mine or major plant must have a nearby power source – and how many more will make it off paper and into reality? Shipping breakbulk cargo from one African port to another can be a surprisingly challenging business. It is often easier to ship from South to West Africa via Europe than it is to ship directly from port to port. In order to move large volumes of cargo long distances, a strong rail network is key for Africa, a continent without navigable waterways. Yet in the 30 years from the 1970s until 2000, the African Rail network actually shrank by 20 percent. This trend is now being reversed with massive developments already underway around the continent, and even larger developments well into planning. How will these various rail developments link up, if at all? How can the entire continent benefit from this? Our rail expert provides an overview of rail developments being planned or underway on the African continent.
