Bremenports Investment Abounds Several Projects Lined Up for Germany’s No. 1 Breakbulk Port
T
he Bremen/Bremerhaven group of ports encompasses Europe’s fourth-largest container-handling terminal; the second-largest port for handling new cars and vehicles; its busiest rail port operation; and Germany’s No. 1 breakbulk port. The port complex handles about 74 million tonnes of cargo a year, including more than 4 million tonnes of breakbulk. The port complex has a total of 14 berths for mega container ships, with container volumes approaching 5.5 million 20-foot-equivalent units. Bremerhaven handles the largest container vessels in the world, as well as car carriers, refrigerated fresh produce vessels and all other types of seagoing vessels.

The ports’ terminals and infrastructure include about 190 kilometers of rail track. And, according to the most recent report, the Bremen/ Bremerhaven complex generates at least 288,450 port-related jobs. Bremen and Bremerhaven come under the umbrella of the port management company bremenports, which has overseen some huge investment projects in recent years and continues on a path of significant investment and expansion.
OFFSHORE TERMINAL BREMERHAVEN (OTB)
Bremenports’ ¤180 million Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven plans feature a 25-hectare terminal with a 500-meter quay, heavy-load capacity
and unrestricted access to deep water, for the pre-assembly, storage and transshipment of offshore wind turbine components. The facility would be close to the production sites for wind turbine components, and about 200 hectares of industrial sites are available nearby for new companies and expansions. However, the OTB proposal has been the subject of a legal challenge by the environmental group BUND, and this has slowed the progress of the development. Early this year, a court ruling recognized the importance of the project, but required more studies to be carried out before consent is granted. The original proposals envisaged OTB opening this year but the delay ISSUE 3 / 2019

is not necessarily a bad thing. The German government has slowed the pace on offshore wind so a new likely date of 2021-22 for opening may work out well. “The plans are on hold at present, but we look forward to a positive decision,” said bremenports spokesman Holger Bruns.
Europe. About 80 percent of the 2.3 million cars handled come or go by train, and almost every second container that is destined for the hinterland is transported by rail,” Bruns said. “Bremerhaven is the biggest European train port, and it is increasing.”
RAIL EXPANSION
The ¤30 million Kaiserhafen III project is expected to be finished by the end of this year. Quayside dating back as far as the Kaiser Wilhelm era is being restored, a new 500-meter quay is being built and the port basin is being enlarged by 9 meters.
Bremerhaven handled 5 percent more cargo trains in 2018, following the completion of a ¤30 million expansion of the Imsumer Deich storage track complex at the Überseehafen. The project provided eight new parallel rail tracks, of 750 meters each, and increased the capacity of the port’s rail system from 600 to 700 trains per week. “This development makes Bremerhaven the best railport in
KAISERHAFEN III
COLUMBUSKAJE PROJECT
In the past year, the Bremen senate has given the go ahead and confirmed funding of ¤140 million for three projects at the port.
The largest of these is the rebuilding of the 1,000 meter Columbuskaje, a 100-year-old quay used by cruise ships, at a cost of about ¤80 million. The other two involve building a new quay in the fishing port and rebuilding a quay in the north of the harbor. “So, we have three big projects that we are planning at the moment,” Bruns said. “They are all very complex, and it will be 2020-21 when we start to build. The work will take four to five years, and they will be built almost at the same time.” Cruise has been a particular success story for bremenports – the total number of cruise passengers passing through the port increased from 98,530 in 2016, to 165,610 in 2017, and then to 238,000 in 2018. “We hope to reach 300,000 in the next two years,” Bruns said. ‘Welcome to Breakbulk City’ Breakbulk Europe to Return to Bremen in 2020

reakbulk Europe, the world’s largest event for the project cargo and breakbulk industry, will return to Bremen, Germany, for the third consecutive year in 2020 at Messe Bremen, May 26-28. “Breakbulk Europe returning to Bremen also in 2020 is great news for our location. Bremen ‘breathes’ trade and logistics, is one of the main breakbulk ports in Europe and therefore the logical choice as host of Breakbulk Europe,” said Martin Günthner, minister of economic affairs, labor and ports of the Federal State of Bremen. “We are glad that we were able to convince ITE to come to Bremen for the third year in a row and to give us the chance to be a great host again for this wonderful show with more than 10,000 exhibitors and visitors.” “Bremen can do ports and Bremen can do trade fairs. And that is why Bremen is the ideal partner city for ITE to host this outstanding event again in 2020,” said Robert Howe, managing director of bremenports. “I am both

On behalf of everyone at bremenports, ‘Welcome to Breakbulk City!’ ” “We are delighted to be returning to the historic city of Bremen for the third year in a row,” said Nick Davison, portfolio director for Breakbulk Events, ITE Group. “Bremen has really stepped up its commitment to provide the services to support this event. on its trams and trains to make traveling between the venue, hotels, restaurants and popular tourist sites around town convenient to all participants.” Davison noted that the early announcement was made in consideration of all Breakbulk Europe attendees and especially the more than 550 companies that will exhibit at this year’s event, May 21-23. “As an organizer with more than 200 international events, we know it takes months of rigorous planning to make an event the size of Breakbulk Europe successful,” Davison said. “Like with us, exhibiting companies also have much to plan as they prepare for this event. We wanted to share the location and dates for Breakbulk Europe 2020 as early as possible to help our current customers and those who wish to join us next year.” The 2020 announcement came during the run-up to Breakbulk Europe 2019, which will be even bigger with more key networking opportunities for all. With the initial move to Bremen in 2018, attendance swelled by 26 percent – more than double the increase in 2017. New to this year’s event is the addition of Hall 7, which will feature the Masters Arena, a content theatre designed for the newly revamped VIP Shipper program, along with an exclusive Breakbulk Masters lounge located on the second level of this hall. General content offerings have been doubled with the Breakbulk Main Stage in Hall 4 and the Tech & Innovation Hub in Hall 6. The customer and visitor experience is always top priority, and improvements to this year’s show are a direct response to feedback from attendees. There are more food venues and bars, including an open-air café at the front of the venue, flanked by large vehicle and equipment display space. What was the response you received from those who exhibited or attended the 2018 event? The response to the 2018 event was phenomenal. We saw a big jump in both exhibitor and visitor numbers, making us confident that we captured and represented an even greater percentage of the breakbulk ecosystem within Europe. Crucially for us as organizers, Maleha Khan / CREDIT: ITE GROUP Breakbulk Europe continues to be seen as the place for the As Breakbulk Europe project supply chain to annually meet continues, we will and connect. With the 2018 event setting records, did you see areas you wanted to improve upon the event? With any event there is always room for improvement. 2018 was our first year in Bremen and everything was new to us, the city and the venue. Although the event was a great success there were still areas for logistical improvement, from travel, to catering to air conditioning. We’ve taken our knowledge and experience from 2018 and implemented changes for an even smoother 2019 event, including free city-wide public transport, the allowance of external catering at Messe Bremen and improved air conditioning. What are new features of this year’s event? We want Breakbulk to mature and adapt to provide the best experience for 8 DESTINATION: BREMEN europe.breakbulk.com

our customers and visitors. The new features in 2019 are a direct response to the feedback received in 2018. We’ve created more areas to network and meet including an open-air bar at the front of the venue and an extensive café zone in Hall 7. The addition of Hall 7 provides even greater exhibitor representation across the breakbulk ecosystem. Dual registration between Halls 4 and 7 will ensure that attendees can register and
enter the event easily, with traffic flowing freely. Our most exciting new feature in 2019 is the Masters Arena. We want to ensure every year that the top of the supply chain are present onsite. The launch of the Breakbulk Masters program (previously VIP Shippers) and the new approach of verified membership and curated event experiences at the Masters Arena space, will increase representation onsite and ensure Breakbulk is the place where vital conversations happen. Are plans already in the works for 2020? We undertook a comprehensive review of the location for Breakbulk Europe in 2020, this included both asking for feedback from our exhibitors and visitors (via a survey) and looking at other aspects of running an event such as venue size and city compatibility. This exercise has led us to the decision to stay in Bremen for one more year in 2020, and we look forward to working with the city and the venue once again. The benefit of making this decision early, is the stability and time granted to create an even stronger event. This process was extremely worthwhile; it gave us insight into our options for the future and a clear understanding as to what industry values as important. As Breakbulk Europe continues, we will always endeavor to listen to the market and work with the industry towards shared goals. With a clear strategy into 2020, we can focus on delivering a strong event, and with that decision made can look ahead to 2021 and the possibilities beyond. BB ISSUE 3 / 2019
‘Perfect Place for Breakbulk’ Messe Bremen Serves ‘Headliner’ Event

ven bigger, even better: Messe Bremen is aiming to smash last year’s records, and is looking forward to hosting the most successful Breakbulk Europe so far. “Breakbulk was a wonderful show last year, with 30 percent more visitors than the year before and the biggest success in its history,” said Andreas Marquardt, director of guest events at Bremen Messe. “We are very proud of that and we are delighted that the Breakbulk organizers have brought the show back to Bremen this year.” Breakbulk has not only confirmed Messe Bremen’s place on the map, Marquardt said. The event is of huge significance for the whole of Bremen, highlighting its qualities as a world-class, modern exhibition city. “Every hotel in Bremen knows what Breakbulk is. The city was full of people during Breakbulk last year and it is very important for us. This has helped Messe Bremen and the city to increase our profile,” he said. Messe Bremen, which opened in the 1990s, is operated as a department of the state-owned Bremen Economic Development Corp. It has eight exhibition halls providing a total 40,000 square meters of exhibition area, and is directly linked to the OVB-Arena and Bremen Congress Centre, providing
21 conference rooms with individual capacities of between 70 and 1,600. Breakbulk was one of two “headliners” for the center in 2018. The other was the International Astronautical Congress, the annual scientific conference and space exhibition which attracts astronauts and others from the international space industry. “We had 6,000 people from all over the world. The event included an open day for the public, which attracted 11,000 visitors and included a live show broadcast from the International Space Station to Bremen,” Marquardt said. Bremen, he says, has two core competences. The first is port and maritime logistics, including specializing in breakbulk cargoes. The second is all about science, aircraft and space, as the city has a long history of building satellites and aircraft. “So, it was very good for us to have these two huge international shows here in Bremen,” he says. This year’s Breakbulk Europe is expanding into a wider space – and even more visitors are expected. There were some challenges last year, not least because the first day of the exhibition coincided with a public holiday in the southern part of Germany, prompting a surge of visitors on that day. It was also one of the hottest days of the year, and
Messe Bremen’s cooling system struggled to cope with the demands. “We have invested a lot in rebuilding our air conditioning system since then,” Marquardt said. “Among other improvements, we have also invested in additional Wi-Fi capacity so that everyone can access Wi-Fi for their phones, tablets, etc.” The benefits of Messe Bremen as a location remain the same. Right next door to the city’s main railway station and only 15 minutes from the international airport, Messe Bremen is the ultimate “accessible” facility. About 60 percent of visitors arrive by public transport. The center is also close to the motorways and there is parking for more than 2,500 cars. “Our main advantage is that we are right in the heart of the city and within walking distance of many hotels, pubs and the old historic city. Once you are here, you don’t need any other transport,” Marquardt said. There are an about 10,000 hotel beds in Bremen and 5,000 of these are within walking distance of Messe Bremen. “I really believe that Bremen is the perfect place for Breakbulk. Visitors were very enthusiastic last year, and the added bonus is that people see Bremen as another wonderful city that is great to visit,” he added. BB europe.breakbulk.com DESTINATION: BREMEN 9

Part of ‘Breakbulk Family’ Chamber Represents Bremen Logistics, Trade of special courses available for logistics make Bremen very attractive. In short, the companies with a great reputation and major activities located here, combined with the educational possibilities for youngsters, make Bremen a good place to be if you are in logistics.
Bremen and Bremerhaven chambers of commerce merged Jan. 1, 2016 to create one chamber with 52,000 members, Handelskammer Bremen – IHK für Bremen und Bremerhaven. Breakbulk talks to Eduard DubbersAlbrecht, Bremen Chamber of Commerce board member and managing director of Ipsen Logistics. What would you say are the advantages for companies and businesses such as yours, of being based in Bremen? Definitely Bremen is one of the logistics centers and trading centers of Europe. Bremerhaven is the fourthlargest container port in Europe and the second-largest when it comes to roll-on, roll-off. Bremenports is also German’s No. 1 breakbulk port, with excellent facilities for project cargoes. For that reason, we have a good number of very well-known freight forwarders located here. We also have excellent vocational training in the city, including the German dual education system, in which youngsters can be in school and also getting practical experience with a company at the same time. We have a large state university as well as the private Jacobs University Bremen, and institutes for logistics. The wide choice
How important is the geography? Looking at the map, Bremen is located very nicely at the center of Europe. It’s no surprise that we are a center of logistics and transportation. Whether you are heading west or east, it works very well from Bremen. The Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Scandinavia are all extremely accessible from Bremen. What kind of support is there for those doing business out of Bremen? While there are no particular tax incentives, our government strongly supports the logistics and transportation sector in general and seriously looks at relevant infrastructure projects. When it comes to expansion of the container terminals, for example, the government is definitely positive. It is also supportive when it comes to buying property and land for warehousing and other activities. Our national forwarders’ and logistics associations both have offices in Bremen, so lobbyists on behalf of our sector are well represented here. The Chamber of Commerce has a division dedicated to transport, logistics and traffic development and also lobbies the government and relevant administration offices on behalf of the business sector when necessary. results. We work hard to keep our costs under control. We work carefully with our funds and spend them wisely and, as a result, we have been able to reduce dues in the past few years. The Chamber of Commerce has an official function – including legalization of documents and the issuance of certificates. We also have a responsibility in vocational training. The Chamber holds seminars and other events on a variety of issues, from EU-related topics to Customs procedures to the impact of Brexit. In all, we manage between 5,000 and 6,000 events a year, to inform members and give them the opportunity to ask questions. The Chamber will also do research on behalf of members, and the various divisions have small committees to discuss issues that concern a particular sector. What, for you, is the significance of Breakbulk Europe being held in Bremen? For Bremen, this event is definitely important. Last year we saw visitors not only from across Germany and the European Union, but also from outside the EU – including from China and the United States. So, hosting Breakbulk definitely helps us to prove Bremen’s reputation. Bremen is known as a leading breakbulk port which serves the industry really very well. For that reason, this kind of exhibition is a perfect fit. Another factor is the ‘breakbulk family.’ Breakbulk brings together so many people you know, or would like to meet, whether competitors, suppliers or customers. It is a family, and that fits nicely with a relatively small location like the city of Bremen. The small size of Bremen means that everybody visiting is accommodated close together in hotels, so that it is easy to meet many people from the breakbulk industry. We are proud to have Breakbulk Europe in Bremen and we would love to continue to have it! BB ISSUE 3 / 2019

remen benefits from having a large number of highly skilled professionals in the forwarding and shipping sector as well as the wide range of valueadded services connected with storage, handling and transport of cargo. “The high level of professionalism applies just as well to administrative functions as to craftsmen, working in ports, storage facilities, etc.,” said Christian Leopold, managing director, CHS Container Handel GmbH. Sven Riekers, BLG’s head of sales for high-and-heavy/breakbulk, is clear on the benefits of doing business out of the ports. “Bremen and Bremerhaven have high competences in breakbulk shipping. With the headquarters of several project forwarders, branch offices and agents of all the major shipping lines and port terminals with large capacity and technical skills, Bremen and Bremerhaven make it very easy to get the right people together. Bremen is a city of short distances. Every visitor to Messe Bremen notices this – but also everyone who does business here.” A contingent of area companies will co-exhibit with bremenports at Breakbulk Europe. The following are a few examples of those port partners.
BLG LOGISTICS
BLG Logistics operates two terminals where breakbulk and highand-heavy cargo are handled, one each in Bremen and Bremerhaven. The Neustädter Hafen in Bremen handles all kinds of breakbulk cargo, including steel products, forest products and project cargoes – machinery, wind turbines, heavy lifts – amounting to 1.35 million tonnes in 2018. At the AutoTerminal Bremerhaven, BLG handles more than 2 million cars and all kinds of high-and-heavy and breakbulk cargo to be shipped on rollon, roll-off vessels – this added up to 1.38 million tonnes in 2018, an all-time high. “For 2019, we expect a largely stable business development on high levels in both Bremen and Bremerhaven,” said Riekers, BLG’s head of sales for highand-heavy/breakbulk. Size isn’t everything, but it still counts for a lot when it comes to the ability to handle large projects, whether talking about the shipments of complete factories, wind turbines or pipelines, he said. “The Neustädter Hafen is Europe’s largest terminal for breakbulk cargoes. Furthermore, the port still is and will always be Germany’s southernmost
seaport, which is an advantage in regard to competitive pre- or on-carriage costs via truck, rail or barge to the European hinterland. “Looking to Bremerhaven, our USP (unique selling position) compared to other European ports is that all liner services calling Bremerhaven are being handled at the same terminal. No shifting of cargo needed. The customer can decide very late which carrier he will use, but at a very early stage he can already decide to bring his cargo to our terminal,” he said. More than 200 ports worldwide are connected to BLG’s breakbulk and highand-heavy terminals in Bremen and Bremerhaven, Riekers said.

Proud City Bremen Residents Embrace History, Culture, Tourism tram. This means it is easy to explore this green city on foot or by bike. What makes Bremen residents proud of their city? At the heart of the city, on the picturesque market square, stand the magnificent 600-year-old Weser Renaissance town hall and the grand old statue of Roland. They have been a symbol of independence since 1404. The town hall and Roland statue now enjoy the protected status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are among Bremen’s most popular attractions, for visitors and locals alike. From its UNESCO World Heritage listed town hall to Germany’s oldest wine cellar, Bremen offers visitors a wonderful array of sights to see and places to visit. Breakbulk talks to Peter Siemering, managing director of WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH (Bremeninvest), about the city’s charms. What makes Bremen special – for residents, for business visitors and for tourism visitors? Bremen, the cosmopolitan city on the Weser River, has a proud history stretching back 1,200 years. Although the grand old buildings around the market square betray its roots as an ancient trading center, Bremen has the feel of a thriving city on the up. Highlights include the Schnoor (Bremen’s oldest quarter), the cathedral, and the unusual red-brick architecture of Böttcherstrasse. And, of course, there is the city’s famous emblem, the statue of the Bremen Town Musicians from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. But what makes Bremen particularly special is that you never have to travel too far or for too long. The conference center is right next to the main train station in the city center, and the journey between the international airport and the city center takes less than 10 minutes by
Do visitors feel welcome? We Bremen folk are especially proud of our culture of being open and welcoming. As a historical mercantile city, Bremen has been welcoming visitors and trading partners from all over the world for hundreds of years. We recently launched the ‘service quality Q’ initiative to improve our hospitality even further. We provide training on a wide variety of topics for hoteliers, restaurant owners and service staff, and employees at the tourist attractions, ranging from English lessons to dealing with foreign cultures. Are there any unexpected surprises or secrets for visitors to discover? Bremen is full of surprises. Did you know, for example, that Bremen is one of Europe’s most important hubs for space technology? Visitors can learn about our contribution to the International Space Station on a tour of the Airbus site. Bremen is also home to the largest and most state-of-the-art Mercedes plant – guided tours are available here, too. We also have plenty to offer in terms of food and drink: from the world’s largest collection of German wines in the Ratskeller, to delicious craft beers and charming artisan coffee roasteries. The oldest coffee house in the Germanspeaking countries was opened right here in Bremen.

Does Bremen continue to develop as a destination? Any new developments or attractions? Bremen’s tourism industry is steadily growing. New hotels are opening and the number of visitors is rising every year. The majority of overnight guests in the hotels are business travelers, so the meetings, incentives, congresses and events (MICE) sector is very close to our hearts. More and more major conference organizers are planning their events in Bremen. That includes Breakbulk, of course, which is being staged here for the second time. The International Astronautical Congress in 2018 and the International Coral Reef Symposium (2020) have also chosen Bremen as the venue for their event. Any recent, ongoing or planned investments/developments you would highlight? Many hotel investors have already recognized Bremen’s potential. In the past 10 years alone, the number of available beds has increased by more than 40 percent. More hotels are set to open in 2019, including the ibis budget hotel (192 rooms) at the central station, the niu Crusoe Hotel (152 rooms) at the airport and the quirky ‘indoor hostel camp’ HafenTraum, which will offer beds in small vintage camper vans, tiny houses, rooms and wooden cabins. The regeneration of Überseestadt (New Harbour District) is also very exciting. A new quarter is springing up in the very place where the first sea freight containers were unloaded on to the quays 50 years ago, creating a mix of homes, industry, creative agencies, culture and leisure facilities. In 2019 we are also marking the 200th anniversary of the Bremen Town Musicians with a major exhibition in the Kunsthalle art gallery, a week-long birthday party in July, themed guided tours and lots of different events celebrating the famous four. Leisure Awaits Delightful Pursuits for Delegates’ Downtime

hat do other people think about Bremen? A nationwide study was recently carried out, to see how Bremen’s brand image was perceived elsewhere in Germany. The result? German people see Bremen as a “beautiful, historical city,” “understated, reliable” and “safe, stress-free and friendly,” with lots of opportunities for leisure pursuits. Bremen’s market square, at the heart of the city’s old town, comprises the town hall and Roland statue (a joint World Heritage site), St. Peter’s Cathedral, the Schütting Guildhall, historical gabled houses and, in complete contrast, the modern State Parliament (Haus der Bürgerschaft). The understated tribute to the famous Bremen Town Musicians, tucked away beside the town hall, is said to be the
most photographed site in Bremen. Right next to the city’s old quarter is the Viertel quarter. Described as “the very essence of vibrant urban life,” it is packed with independent shops, cafés and restaurants offering international cuisine, clubs, artist studios and craft workshops, along with beautifully preserved terraced houses and grand homes. Home to 550,000 people, Bremen is the 10th-largest city in Germany. Together with Bremerhaven, it forms the smallest federal state in the country. As well as its history, traditions and fairy tale connections, Bremen is also a European center for aerospace, a city of science and home to the Überseestadt district, one of the largest urban development projects in Europe. Along with all of that, the city has 2,600

hectares of parks and green spaces. The historic market square, with its bars and restaurants, has proved to be a top meeting point for Breakbulk participants, and no doubt will be popular again this year. Other great places to meet include the Schlachte Promenade, which has a wealth of restaurants with beer gardens and the possibility to take a boat trip, stroll along the water’s edge, or board a pleasure boat for dinner, theatre or concert. The Markthalle Acht, close to the market square, offers informality and, it’s said, the best pizza in town. Diners eat together at long wooden tables, and the choice ranges from mezze to dishes from Asia. Visitors can buy typical Bremen products to take home – including beer, coffee and even gourmet popcorn. ISSUE 3 / 2019

TOP ATTRACTIONS
The Bremen Town Musicians – Gerhard Marcks’ bronze statue of the Bremen Town Musicians from the Brothers Grimm fairytale is outside the town hall. The Town Hall and Roland Statue – The 600-year-old town hall, whose Weser Renaissance-style facade was added in later years, and the Roland statue, erected in 1404, are the city’s most precious cultural treasures. Since 2004 they have had UNESCO World Heritage status.
The Schnoor Quarter – The pretty little Schnoor quarter, the oldest quarter of the city, takes its name from the fact that its many old buildings line the narrow lanes like pearls on a string (Schnur in German). There are restaurants and cafés, arts and crafts boutiques and souvenir shops.
The Maritime Mile in Vegesack – Visitors can explore Bremen’s seafaring tradition on the Maritime Mile. Germany’s first man-made harbor was built there 400 years ago, and the country’s last fully rigged sailing ship still afloat is anchored there. The historic Spicarium harbor warehouse houses an interactive exhibition on shipbuilding, sailing, marine bionics and yacht design.
Böttcherstrasse – Just south of the market square, the Böttcherstrasse, a 110-metre-long architectural tour de force, contains restaurants and cafés, craft shops, two museums and a carillon consisting of 30 Meissen porcelain bells.
The Überseestadt District – The Überseestadt area covers former docklands which have been transformed into the city’s newest residential, retail and office development. Contemporary architecture contrasts with old warehouses directly opposite, and there’s a good choice of trendy bars and shops. Knowledge Worlds – Bremen has numerous exhibitions on science and technology. The Science Center at Universum Bremen explores deep inside the earth, the Ethnological Museum takes you all the way around it, and the Botanika horticultural science center puts it under the microscope to reveal the secret world of plants.
Kunsthalle Art Gallery – The Kunsthalle gallery has an extensive collection ranging from old masters to the latest media art. Its permanent display of prints and drawings is one of the most significant of its kind. The Schlachte Embankment – The Schlachte promenade along the river Weser is a good place to chill out, offering numerous pubs and bars – many with outdoor seating areas. An antiques and bric-a-brac market is held every
Space Tour – Bremen is a leading aerospace center. You can watch Airbus engineers at work, building space transporters and rocket components, and learn how astronauts live on the International Space Station, which is monitored by Airbus. For more inspiration, visit: www. bremen-tourism.de/ BB

remen has a sparkling choice of places to eat, with its traditional cuisine shaped by the city’s proximity to the sea, its trading heritage and its connections to rural life. Enjoying good food and drink is an important part of life in Bremen, according to the city’s tourism experts. “Whether you prefer coffee or beer, sweet or savory, you’ll be well catered for on a trip to our city on the banks of the Weser river.” The city is home to a wide range of big brands and manufacturers, including Beck’s beer, Jacob’s coffee, Milka and Hachez chocolate, Kellogg’s cornflakes, Chiquita bananas and Philadelphia cream cheese. Beer has been brewed in Bremen since the 11th century. Beck’s leads the way as the best-known brand, and there is also a florishing craft beer sector. Coffee is another headliner; the first coffee shop in the German-speaking countries opened in Bremen in 1673, and it is said that every other cup of coffee drunk in Germany today is supplied by a Bremen company. Coffee has been has been roasted by hand at Lloyd Caffee for 85 years, making the small roastery on Fabrikenufer the
oldest in Bremen to still produce coffee using traditional methods. Variety is definitely the spice of Bremen life. Following are some examples of dining options.
Alexander von Humboldt – The historical three-masted ship Alexander von Humboldt gained international recognition through commercials for Beck’s beer. Converted into a floating restaurant and hotel, it is anchored permanently at the Schlachte in Bremen. It offers a different menu every month with a selection of fresh, regional and seasonal dishes. These also refer to the ship and its voyages. The ship can accommodate small private parties and larger functions for up to 120 guests. Bremen Ratskeller Restaurant – Serves classic dishes from northern Germany, as well as light and modern

Knurrhahn – The oldest fish restaurant of Bremen, promising delicious seafood dishes at reasonable prices, its menu features specialities from the region such as fried fish, contemporary fish creations, salads and snacks. For busy people, it also offers fish dishes to take away. Fisherman’s – A modern fish restaurant in Bremen, popular with those who like their seafood served in new and inventive ways. Its menu offers traditional north German specialities such as grilled sole, roasted eel, plaice with freshly caught North Sea shrimps, and crispy baked fish with homemade potato salad, as well as modern, creative and seasonal fish dishes. If you’re not so keen on fish, you can try one of the fishfree, locally sourced options instead. Konditorei Café im Schnoor – A traditional patisserie offering Bremen specialities. On offer – traditional sweets and baked goods from Bremen such as Bremer Klaben, Bremer Kaffeebrot and Bremer Kluten. The café is separated from the shop by a part of the old city wall that runs right through the middle of the room. Paulaner’s im Wehrschloss – Since 1920, people have been coming to Paulaner’s to drink, dine and dance. This traditional tavern serves Bavarian delicacies and north German specialities and Bavarian beers brewed by Paulaner. In summer, the garden becomes an “oasis of relaxation beneath a canopy of ancient trees.” For a comprehensive list of places to eat and drink, visit www.brementourism.de/restaurants-nightlife.
