Dear Brebeuf Jesuit Family,
Our fifty-third school year is nearing its end, and with it, there is an invigorating sense of energy. Students, faculty, and staff can attribute the enthusiastic current running through our fall season to the many blessings that have come our way in recent months. One of the most noticeable of these has been the incredible transformation of our school’s facilities through the successful Brebeuf Jesuit: Leading the Way campaign. Through over $7.2 million in gifts from supporters and families, the school has not only been able to grow its endowment of support, but radically renovate those areas of the building our students have used the most in the past half-century: our library, which is now the cutting-edge collaborative space known as the Information Commons; our Multi-Purpose Room-turnedAuditorium; our Visual Arts Department; over thirty classrooms; our Learning Center; and even the academic department centers. Each of these areas have received much needed upgrades, repairs, and technological enhancements. And beyond all this, Brebeuf Jesuit has experienced yet another blessing specifically for our students most in need: on #BrebeufGivingDay on September 4, generous donors gave almost $100,000 to The Brebeuf Fund, which helps support students who require financial assistance to attend Brebeuf. With the gifts provided for these new learning spaces and assistive funding, our students are able to focus on the transforming process of their education here. Brebeuf Jesuit continues to be a place that challenges students to reach for the magis—to reach beyond simple rote learning to experience and change their world. As I watch our students volunteering to defend the rights of the homeless, serve the underserved in shelters, and start their own humanitarian clubs and charitable drives, I know that every blessing they receive is redounded to others. Thank you, reader, for your part in this beautiful cycle of giving, which has individuals like you at its heart.

ABOUT CAMPUS
Brebeuf Bistro Carafes & Canvas With over 450 attendees, Brebeuf Bistro – Carafes & Canvas, Brebeuf Jesuit’s largest annual fundraiser, was once again a delightful evening of mingling with fellow Brebeuf parents and alumni, silent and live auctions, entertainment, and delicious food. With a theme of Carafes & Canvas, the 2016 Bistro held on Saturday, February 27, was an event that will go down in Brebeuf history. For the first time, the event was held off-site, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Live and silent auctions allowed attendees to use their own smart devices to bid on exciting experience packages and unique items. In Bistro’s 22nd year, attendees enjoyed tasting over 22 bourbons and wines, purchased raffle tickets to win a new car, and watched a speed painting performance by Dan Dunn’s PaintJam, all while benefiting Brebeuf Jesuit. From Brebeuf student artwork to sports memorabilia and even a puppy, there was something for everyone to enjoy at the auctions. Special guest emcee Chris Widlic, Sports Anchor and Reporter at WISH-TV, kicked off the live auction portion of the evening. The event was filled with so many special moments to benefit Brebeuf Jesuit students. Every Bistro event’s proceeds directly benefit the needs of the student body at Brebeuf Jesuit through support for financial aid via The Brebeuf Fund, and through enrichment support for student programming and instructional grants. This year’s Brebeuf Bistro – Carafes & Canvas was a great evening to celebrate friends, family, and Brebeuf Jesuit! Brebeuf is excited for everyone to attend Brebeuf Bistro 2017 which will unveil a brand new theme this fall! 2

Adventure in Paraguay SPENDING A SCHOOL YEAR ON AN
Linnie LaMaster ’17 Takes Flight
Linnie LaMaster ’17 had grown up hearing from her grandfather about Rotary International’s exchange programs that send members to other countries. And when she was old enough, she reached out to the local Carmel Rotary Club. “I wanted to see more of the world,” Linnie explains, “and I knew Rotary had an awesome program. Out of 40 countries where they have exchanges established, they ask you for your favorites. Originally Linnie received her number-one choice, Argentina, but due to unforeseen circumstances she ended up traveling to Paraguay instead. It was quite a journey to this point for Linnie, who had to undergo an intensive application process that included a demanding essay and interviewing process, as well as a scholarship competition. “I am so glad that I got it,” says Linnie of the scholarship. “It pays for everything but the plane ticket.” But wait, what about her career of study at Brebeuf Jesuit? How can she manage to miss out on her junior year and still graduate on time? “It might have helped that my mom is the assistant principal at Brebeuf,” Linnie laughs. “But no, really, I think that it helped

my case a lot that the school that I’ll be attending in Paraguay is a Jesuit sisterschool. Jesuit schools respect each other’s rigor, and so most of my credits for classes will transfer.” Considerable time went into planning with the administration at Brebeuf so that Linnie’s course schedule doesn’t suffer the strain. “I’ll have to double-up in English classes next year and maybe take a history course online, but I shouldn’t have to repeat a whole year,” Linnie explains. “I’m so grateful that the administration has been so flexible and so supportive of my goals.” For a student who has only just finished language courses in Spanish II, those goals are pretty extensive. “I want to become fluent; they say that this is the best way to do it – that you can become fluent through full immersion in about five months with some prior exposure to the language. I also want to take the chance to explore the landscape and history there.” Through the Rotary’s program, Linnie has had the chance to take exploratory tours to many locales with other Rotary exchange students in her area, even going up the coast to the north, as well as visiting Patagonia.
She was also encouraged to fully embrace her experience within the culture surrounding her, even if it means feeling a little bit estranged from home. “They actually don’t encourage you to call home very often,” Linnie explains. “It’s a way to discourage homesickness and keep you present where you are. That will be tough.” But Linnie is prepared for this experience to change her, both through the cultural exchange and through her participation in the larger Rotary International culture. “I want be sure to represent Brebeuf and Rotary well. Both are very service-oriented organizations. ‘Service over self ’ is the Rotary International motto. In fact, I’ll be continuing to serve as a volunteer with Rotary when I return; I’ll also be taking Community Service at Brebeuf then, too. It will be a great way to expand my growth into a woman for others.” It’s a journey that has taken Linnie far away – and farther into an expanded awareness. “I wish more students like me knew about this program and would try it,” Linnie says. “I know it sounds hard, but Brebeuf has been so supportive. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I can’t waste.”

A Message from the Chair of the Brebeuf Jesuit Board of Trustees Dear Brebeuf Jesuit Families, Brebeuf and I go way back – back years before I could even attend as a student. I can remember all the way back in the 1960s, when my dad, Jim Clark, was a founding supporter of this school. It was a part of his lifelong commitment to the importance of public and community service. Observing him as a role model, I learned this valuable lesson: You have to give back in some way to others. It makes life meaningful. After watching my dad give so much to this school at its beginning, and then attending as a student myself in the 1970s, and then more recently experiencing fatherly pride as my own children excelled in the transforming environment here, I am delighted to be serving Brebeuf and its students and families today with my fellow Trustees. Brebeuf is still a place that touches lives, and it is rewarding to be a part of that mission. As Board Chairman, I want to take this opportunity to encourage my fellow alumni to reconnect with Brebeuf again. Come back and visit. Talk to one of the teachers or to one of the many bright current students here and learn about the changes that have taken place and what is still excellent at Brebeuf. Call the Alumni Office and ask about the many ways you can get involved. Take a moment to reflect on a teacher or alumnus who changed your life at Brebeuf and send in a donation to the Brebeuf Fund in their honor. It’s never too late to revisit your past and give back in a way that will impact the futures of many—to live out the Brave calling to be Men and Women for Others. Sincerely,
J. Murray Clark ’75

Before she came to Brebeuf in 2010, English teacher Hadley Moore worked with Teach For America (TFA) and spent three years teaching in Baltimore City Public Schools. Since then, Moore has kept in close contact with TFA and its network of professionals, who encouraged her as an alumna to pursue the Woodrow Wilson Foundation Fellowship MBA in Education Leadership, which is financed through the Eli Lilly Foundation. This fellowship program is the first of its kind in the United States, offering an award to help teachers and administrators work towards a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. Moore, who earned her Master of Arts in teaching from Johns Hopkins, felt drawn to the program because of its unique approach. “The business side of things appealed to me,” explains Moore. “One of the elements of the program is called Lean/Six Sigma, which is the principle of reducing waste in the workplace using best business practices. I’m applying it in my classroom to start by making strides to go paperless, and I’m streamlining the writer’s workshop model to better meet my students where they’re currently performing rather than
continuing a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to writing instruction.” “It was a rigorous process,” Moore admits. She had to gather several letters of recommendation and take part in a highpressure interview to be selected for the fellowship. Over 1,000 teachers in Indiana applied for the program, but only a select few were chosen – including Moore. Utilizing the fellowship’s funds, Moore spent this past summer taking classes at the University of Indianapolis for ten hours a day, six days a week. She has continued to take weekend classes during the school year in addition to spending ten hours a week on leadership development in her own classroom, followed by an additional summer full of classes. By July 2016, Moore will achieve her goal of earning her MBA in addition to paving a path to principal’s licensure. “Our kids at Brebeuf deserve the best,” says Moore, adding, “– that includes having teachers who look for ways to be better.”

Shihling Chui Nurtures New Chinese Language Program
Last year, new faculty member Shihling Chui took on the challenge of building a brand-new Mandarin Chinese Language program at Brebeuf Jesuit. With just 16 students signed up, Ms. Chui had no idea if the new classes would hold student interest. But with Chui’s innovative program-building, including hosting a group of six Taiwanese exchange students from Taipei Municipal Chenggong Senior High School (CGSH), leading group cooking lessons, and bringing cultural celebrations into the classroom, the response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive. “When I surveyed my students for feedback on the classes, almost all of them felt that they not only learned a lot, but that

they had to work hard. To me, that balance is perfect. And this year, so many of them returned to take the next level in Chinese,” says Ms. Chui. “With new students included, we now have 24 enrolled in the Chinese language classes.” Chui, who last year was awarded the Rising Star Award for her teaching by the Indiana Chinese Language Association of Secondary Schools (ICLASS), had many hopes and plans for this new school year. The first was to take a group from Brebeuf for this year’s Chinese Exchange. Five Brebeuf students travelled to Taiwan over
spring break this year. Students visited the CGSH school, went sightseeing, and visited a middle school to teach English. Cultural lessons were also part of the trip. “Glass art, tai chi, calligraphy, going to class with exchange students, and creating personal name stamps,” to name a few. Each Brebeuf student knew at least two people when they first arrived to Taiwan. Ms. Chui established a pen pal program last year to create connections between Brebeuf students and the CGHS students. It was a great experience for both the students and the program that Ms. Chui hopes to continue for many years to come.

Mock Trial, Real Leadership A Reflection with Dawson Robinson ’12
“Did I join Debate Team at Brebeuf? No, but I loved speech class,” explains Brebeuf alumnus Dawson Robinson ’12. “When I got to college with law school as my goal and heard about the Mock Trial team, it pulled at something in me. I’m a very competitive person. “ A REAL-LIFE TRIAL As rising senior at the University of Notre Dame and president of the campus Mock Trial Team, Dawson had been feeling pretty good about where his team was heading this year, despite some personal setbacks. “The Mock Trial Team did very well this winter in regional tournaments, and went on to reach the Opening Round Championship Series, which are like the semifinals,” Dawson explains. “During the Opening Round Championship Series, I had to go home for my grandmother’s funeral. Even though it took a lot of extra preparation for them to replace my role in the trial setting, the team rallied beautifully and had qualified for Nationals!”

SPRING 2016
But just two weeks before the National Tournament, Dawson experienced the worst April Fool’s Day – ever – when a late-night call changed everything. “I was in shock. I didn’t think it could be real, but it was: our coach, Drew Haase, had passed away. It was so unexpected; he was young; he was engaged to be married; he was so bright, so gifted, such a leader and mentor to all of us and especially to me. As I stood there on the phone listening, I realized there was really no other leader I could take this news to—that there was no one to help the team get through this.” Dawson first called the teaching assistant who had helped with Mock Trial that year, law student Krista Pikus, to explain what happened and try to draw up a plan to break it to the team. “It was awful,” says Dawson. “At first, Krista didn’t even believe me.
ALUMNI PROFILE
She was upset, thinking it was an April Fool’s joke. I had to convince her that Drew was really gone.” With painful patience, Dawson waited until the next morning – no longer April Fool’s Day—to tell the Dean of Students and then break the tragic news to the entire team. “The response was immediate. Everyone wanted to meet for practice, so we met up in the Grotto, which is a place on campus where students can go to meditate. We prayed. We talked about Drew. And we realized that he would kill us if we didn’t go through with it and do our best at Nationals.” FACING NATIONAL COMPETITION For the next two weeks, Dawson organized the team’s collaboration through late-night texts and emails as they poured over the brand new case to be reviewed at Nationals, examining every angle. “Our studies might have suffered,” Dawson jokes. At Mock Trial Nationals in Cincinnati, Ohio, the team arrived in the Bengals Stadium for the opening ceremony only to be welcomed by Drew Haase’s entire family, who came to cheer them on – inadvertently upping the stakes for the team members, who wanted honor Haase’s memory in their presence. Dawson admits to being more than nervous as he stepped into some of the most difficult roles in the mock trials: as direct examiner, cross examiner, and as the presenter of the closing argument. The first round pitted the team against a heavy hitter: UCLA’s A-Team. “We lost by a very slim margin, which was oddly encouraging. We figured if we could hang with a team like UCLA, we actually had a good shot at this!” Dawson reflects. And the extra confidence did help: the team went on to take the ballot against Howard University and then lost by just three ballots to the University of Cincinnati.
And for Dawson, an even greater surprise was in store. “[The announcers] said that in the history of Nationals, we’ve never had any attorneys with a perfect score of 30. But this year, we have two – two All-American Attorneys. I was one of them!” “I never expected to win,” says Dawson, “especially with everything that happened. I remember being so surprised. I hugged Drew [Haase]’s mom, and I wished I could have hugged Drew. I was missing him in that moment, wishing I could share it with my mentor, but I knew that everything he had taught me had made me successful.” A SERVANT-LEADER LAWYER Last summer, Dawson worked as an instructor at the mock trial camp at Stanford University called Envision Intensive Law. “I got to teach roughly 15 kids and prepare them to take on other teams. I was surprised that one of them was a Brebeuf student – Calyn Hadlock. It was pretty cool to teach someone from my old high school!” It also brought to mind some of his spiritual formation at Brebeuf Jesuit. “At Brebeuf we talked about being servant-leaders. I think Drew Haase used his skills that way, and it’s part of why I admired him so much. I’m following Drew’s footsteps a bit. I want to be that type of lawyer someday, to come back to Indianapolis and work to make a difference in my city and in the lives of younger people.” Dawson is already sharpening his litigation skills and will apply to law school in the fall. He continues to embrace a teaching role towards younger students, however, and hopes to continue. “Who knows,” says Dawson. “Maybe I’ll wind up coaching a mock trial team at Brebeuf!”
Finally, they faced off against Vanderbilt University in the final round, and the scores were held back to be revealed at the event’s closing ceremony, where everyone – and especially Dawson – was in for a surprise. “Our team received an honorable mention!” Dawson exclaims. “We just erupted in cheers, because at Nationals, that’s a huge deal: it means we were among the top 15 in the nation. We were even presented with a trophy.” That trophy later became a symbol for the team as they offered it to Haase’s mother and fiancée.

Internship Gone International: As a junior computer science major at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, Joel Shapiro ’13 made a leap of faith that landed him deep in the heart of the tech industry in Tel Aviv, Israel. Born into a Jewish-American family, Joel maintained connections since starting college to Indiana University’s Hillel Foundation, which offers cultural opportunities to Jewish students. A casual conversation with two of the program’s organizers became a launching point for a great journey. “They told me about a program connecting American technology students and other international students with Israeli companies in Tel Aviv,” Joel explains. “Tel Aviv is one of the top areas in the world for tech startups—

but in Israel, there are almost no local interns available for hire because their youth are either serving in the army or rushing to finish school after their time in service.” Hoping his studies in computer science would give him an edge for acceptance, Joel applied to the Onward Israel Go Tech Program in the spring; he was excited to get a response and a warm welcome to the program. Although Joel had gone abroad before to Europe with his family and to Russia with Brebeuf ’s band and orchestra group, this internship felt like the next step. “It was my first time living and travelling abroad by myself,” says Joel. “But I knew this was a great opportunity.”
In late June, he arrived in Israel alongside just 21 other young individuals ranging in age from college freshmen to master’s degree candidates. Joel was one of 20 students coming from the U.S, while two others came into the program from the U.K. and Italy. Joel can’t speak of the program without gratitude. “They had housing—really nice housing—set up for us in apartments, with stipends for food and even bus passes; I just paid for my flight. I started working almost right away on the website for CIRRA, a company focused on doing due diligence research into startup businesses that use equity crowdfunding.” During Joel’s two-month internship,

cultural understanding, but it added a new consciousness of his faith heritage as well.
“
The team had six people from five different countries, with four languages between us. Spanish, Russian, Hebrew and English. It was a challenge!
”
“Although I’m Jewish, I’m not particularly Zionist,” he admits. “But I made it a point to visit some important sites while in Israel. I toured the Gazan border and made sure
to spend some time in Jerusalem. I came away thinking that Israel is a nation of dichotomies: Tel Aviv is a very Western, progressive city; Jerusalem in many ways feels more traditional, more MiddleEastern. It’s hard to articulate, but it’s like seeing two sides of the Jewish faith.” In the future, Joel sees himself continuing to work in the technology field before deciding on a particular area of study to pursue a master’s degree. “The work is challenging, and it’s already taken me to a very interesting place. I want to experience a little more before I decide,” Joel says. And might that include another workabroad scenario? Joel doesn’t hesitate. “Why not?”

GIVING BACK
On September 4, 2015, Brebeuf Jesuit celebrated our 53rd birthday in a big way: by hosting our first #BrebeufGivingDay, a day of fun and philanthropy at Brebeuf. Our students, alumni, parents, and faculty banded together to encourage everyone in our community to make a gift to Brebeuf in recognition of our rich tradition of educating Men and Women for Others and the loyal, generous donors who bring that tradition to life. It was a HUGE success – raising nearly $100,000 in support for financial aid scholarships from 216 donors! In true Brebeuf fashion, donors to #BrebeufGivingDay went beyond simply making a gift: they told us how Brebeuf Jesuit transformed them and their families in the most positive of ways. It was the best birthday present ever. We are grateful to everyone who made #BrebeufGivingDay possible and look forward to an even bigger event in 2016!

LEADING THE WAY
LEADING THE WAY to Transformed and Enhanced Environments for Learning In the spring of 2013, Brebeuf Jesuit engaged in a feasibility study that identified two major needs for the school: capital improvements to the academic spaces in the aging school facility and increasing the endowment to support need-based scholarships for students. A campaign called Brebeuf Jesuit: Leading the Way launched in March of 2014 to raise $4 million in funds to renovate the school’s academic spaces and $2 million to support the school endowment. The overarching $6 million campaign goal was achieved in November 2014 and the decision was made to continue with fundraising efforts through Summer 2016. As the school received funds, construction began. These exciting projects have transformed the physical areas of the school that students use most as areas of study and collaboration.
A newly renovated Art Studio.
To date, the campaign has led to the successful renovation of: Auditorium Information Commons Thirty-three Classrooms Six Academic Centers Two Art Studios Learning Center In addition, the campaign has surpassed the $2 million goal for endowment funds. These funds will greatly enhance Brebeuf Jesuit’s ability to recruit and retain qualified students regardless of their families’ socioeconomic background. As a result of the momentum and success, an additional component was added to the campaign initiative – the renovation of the Science Wing. The science renovation will include laboratories, classrooms, an academic center, safety upgrades, technology and lab equipment, and will begin this summer.
A newly renovated Academic Center.
The success and support of the Leading the Way campaign could not have been achieved without the incredible generosity of donors who believe in Brebeuf ’s mission and the leadership of those who helped to lead the way. Thank you to Vince Caponi for chairing this campaign and the campaign leadership committee that includes John Ackerman, Murray Clark ’75, Kate Kennedy, and Andy Mohr. Please look for a final campaign closing report in the coming months!

OUR SPONSORS
2015 Braves Open The 2015 Braves Open Golf Outing, hosted by the Brebeuf Jesuit Alumni Board of Directors, was held on October 16, 2015 four months after the originally planned date of June 19. An unusually soggy month of June and unprecedented rainfall the night before the event flooded the course and delayed the event. It did not delay the enthusiasm and the generosity of our participants, sponsors and volunteers though. On a beautifully crisp and clear fall
afternoon more than 116 golfers joined us at the Golf Club of Indiana in Zionsville to tee it up on behalf of the Brebeuf Jesuit Alumni Association. Proceeds from this year’s event helped to continue to fund the Alumni Legacy Scholarship program, facility upgrades for the Fr. O’Brien Varsity Baseball Field, and other projects sponsored by the Board. The 2015 Braves Open raised more than $20,000. Looking forward to seeing you for this year’s event.
Brebeuf Jesuit and the Alumni Board of Directors would like to thank the following sponsors for their support of the 2015 Braves Open Golf Outing.
