Info Commons

Brebeuf Jesuit renovated its Library by opening up existing walls within the space to evolve into an Information Commons (top right photo). The space has transformed from a traditional library only offering books and periodicals to an active hub for the electronic exchange of information. The Information Commons expands and improves the flexibility and use of space of computer lab facilities, provides an improved study and research environment for students and faculty, has increased space for group work and independent study, meeting rooms and instructional spaces, and a Makerspace for creative technology development. With state-of-the-art technology and user-centered spatial design, the Information Commons is the center for student and faculty research on campus and provides Brebeuf students access to the tools they need to excel and innovate.

Spotlight On: Digital Citizenship In the olden days, most students were required to take Keyboarding or Computer Applications as their basic technology class. With today’s digitally-savvy students, Brebeuf has recognized an even more pressing need in technology education: an understanding of how to be a good citizen on the Web. In Digital Citizenship class, students not only learn how to navigate our increasingly connected world, but how to do it mindfully, using the right tools for the right tasks, and being thoughtful about privacy and ethical concerns.

“So much of computer use today only scratches the surface of what computers really are. Brebeuf’s Digital Citizenship course digs deeper to reveal how computers work, how they communicate with one another, and how people use them socially and educationally.”

PRTs Built into Brebeuf Jesuit’s schedule two to three times a day are PRTs, periods for Personal Responsibility Time. These twenty-five to forty-minute periods serve as a chance for students to practice their time management skills in a safe, structured environment. While PRTs are often used for academic purposes, like first-year language classes, science labs, college seminars, getting an early start on homework, or meeting with teachers (the Math Office is a particularly popular spot), they can also be used for more leisurely activities like club meetings, intramural sports, catching up with friends, or even for eating lunch if a student’s particular break period doesn’t meet that day. These breaks during the day help students learn how to successfully prioritize their time during their college experience, as Stephanie Martin (née Lowry) ’09 can attest:

Knowing how to use this ‘BREAK TIME’ is essential for when you have breaks in your schedule during college courses. While my friends were pulling all-nighters trying to finish work, I was ALREADY DONE because I did a lot of the material during breaks in the day.

Attending a meeting during a PRT featuring visitors such as college recruiters could even change a student’s life. This is exactly what happened to Lauren Linscott ’10:

During my sophomore year, a West Point cadet gave a presentation about service academies during one of my PRTs. I am now a lieutenant in the United States Air Force and a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, and IT ALL STARTED

WITH THAT ONE PRT.

NURTURING A FAITH Service

For over 450 years, the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) have celebrated a faith tradition that affirms acts of selfless service as a demonstration of real love and faith. Our dynamic Community Service Program partners with over 50 local humanitarian agencies to model this essential of the Jesuit faith and nurture an authentic concern in every student. Through over 40 hours of real-life service and a life-changing Social Justice course, each student at Brebeuf transforms into a true man or woman for others.

Faith

At Brebeuf Jesuit, our Catholic and Jesuit identity shine through in our robust faith community, which strives to encourage spiritual growth in every student, regardless of faith background. Approximately 50% of Brebeuf Jesuit’s students are non-Catholic and ascribe to a variety of traditions, including multiple denominations of Protestantism, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, and many more. Through a culture of understanding and dialogue, students learn about the religious traditions of others around them while being encouraged to grow in, and reflect on, their own beliefs.

THAT SERVES ALL Spotlight On: CAMPUS MINISTRY Campus Ministry serves the faith community at Brebeuf Jesuit in a variety of ways, including: All-school Masses and prayer services throughout the year, which are often led by student leaders. Mass that is open to all and offered daily. An exciting retreat program that is designed to inspire spiritual maturity. Open-door pastoral care to help students learn to connect personally with God and reflect on their values and relationships.

CO-CURRICULARS At Brebeuf Jesuit, students are empowered to take their PRTs (Personal Responsibility Times) into their own hands – to study, meet in groups, or even ask a faculty member to help them build a new club! As a result, Brebeuf’s list of clubs and co-curriculars is enormous – more than 50 – and often evolving. THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE TO TRY.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEADERSHIP Clubs and co-curriculars provide an outlet for students to pursue their extracurricular interests while developing leadership skills and increasing their community involvement. At the core of all clubs and co-curriculars is a requirement to have a service initiative to benefit the community. Faculty moderators are there for guidance, but it is the students who organize and sponsor events. Through their leadership in co-curriculars and clubs, students at Brebeuf learn to use their gifts and interests to make the wider world a better place!

The future can be daunting, but Brebeuf built an incredible foundation for me to stand on – a testament to a community that shaped me and to the school that I call home.
