BECKY O’GRADY BOARD PRESIDENT

Dear Breck friends and supporters, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to express my profound gratitude for your commitment to Breck over the past year. The 2016-2017 school year was filled with our students’ academic, athletic, artistic, spiritual, civic, and extracurricular success. For that, we can all be grateful. And thanks to your generosity — as donors, volunteers, and valued members of this remarkable community — you have made a real difference. Because of you: • We exceeded our Annual Fund goal of $1.5 million, enhancing the experience of every student and teacher at Breck. • We embarked on the first year of an ambitious strategic plan, Boldly Breck, assuring Breck’s long-term direction. • We began work on a comprehensive Master Site Plan, guiding our decisions about our facilities in the years to come. • We celebrated the ten-year contributions of our devoted outgoing Head of School, Edward Kim. • We conducted a nationwide search for a new Head of School, bringing in Dr. Natalia Hernández to lead Breck to a bright future. I would like to take this opportunity to thank three retiring members of the Board who have served our community with steadfast dedication and leadership: Tim Clark, Twanya Hood Hill, and Jeff Slocum; and to welcome four new trustees whose terms have just begun: Sally Blanks, Winifred Smith, Chris Thibodeaux, and Chris Welsh ’90. On a personal note, it was a year of transition for the O’Grady family as well. With our son Jack ’16 embarking on his first year of college and our daughter Mary ’20 moving to the Upper School, we have benefitted immeasurably from the dedication and talents of so many extraordinary administrators, faculty, and staff members. To all of them, and to all of you, my deepest gratitude, Becky O’Grady

NATALIA R. HERNÁNDEZ, ED.D. HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Friends of Breck,

4/

It has been an overwhelmingly positive start to the 2017-2018 school year, and I am tremendously honored to have the opportunity to lead such an all-around successful school. I am truly grateful to all of Breck’s stakeholders for the hard work and commitment that have gone into positioning our School. Although I was not yet an official member of the Breck community, it is my great pleasure to have this opportunity to thank you for your support during the 2016-2017 school year. The Breck community that my family and I have joined is warm, welcoming, and built on a foundation of strength. Our School’s deep commitment to academic challenge, social responsibility, and the power of inclusivity is what brought me here, and every day I learn things that make me even prouder to be a part. In classrooms, science labs, athletic fields, art studios, and performing arts spaces, to community partnerships and competitions in the wider world, Breck students have distinguished themselves and their School. They have been nurtured by an extraordinary community of caring adults, led by former Head of School Edward Kim, whose dedication to Breck set the stage for much of what we accomplished collectively. I want to recognize the efforts of many volunteers whose work enriched the entire community in 2016-2017: the Board of Trustees, led by Rebecca O’Grady, Annual Fund Chair Amy Giovanini, and Breck Bash Chairs Jennifer Konz-Alt and Elizabeth Laukka. Sara Ahluwalia and Kirstin Erickson Wilson ’88 led the Parents and Alumni Associations with distinction, and Keena Frerichs and Aysem Senyurekli oversaw a memorable Grandparents’ Day. Your support makes it all possible. Thank you for your countless gifts of time, money, and spirit. We could not pursue our mission effectively without you, and I am humbled by your generosity. With gratitude, Natalia R. Hernández, Ed.D.

Throughout the 2016-17 school year, students, parents, alumni, and faculty shared their personal Breck stories. Their words reminded us of the impact Breck has on our lives and the importance of the Annual Fund in making all of this a reality. Included in this Annual Report are just a few of the stories shared. You can view them all online at breckschool.org.

Everyday Awesome! The “everyday awesome” that our family experiences at Breck often comes in unexpected moments, such as when we witness the growth of one of our sons as he articulates his perspective on a newsworthy event or when another offers his observations from one of his freshman poetry readings. Perhaps one of the most fulfilling Breck moments we had as parents was when our oldest son returned from college for winter break. We had no way of anticipating the way in which the everyday awesome would translate from him to his younger brothers. He was, and still is, fully embracing the “inner academic scholar” that his Breck teachers always encouraged in him. He was talking with his then senior and eighth-grade brothers about “one of the most important Breck lessons he learned,” which was that communication and relationships matter. As we listened quietly from the other room, he went on to explain that even when you don’t realize it, Breck is teaching its students to articulate, advocate, communicate, and build relationships with people. He shared that those relationship skills become so important in college, and as he predicted, later in life. He explained that the Breck relationship and communication skills allowed him to have conversations outside of class with professors about their area of expertise. Those conversations led to his deeper appreciation for the subjects of those classes and allowed the professors to see him as an interested and engaged student. During his junior year of college, those relationships led to the submission of one his papers for publication as well as a paid fellowship. His final advice to his brothers was, “Make the most of the skills of communication and relationship building that you are learning at Breck.” – Susan DeMaris, Breck Parent of Nick ’14, Chris ’16, and Alex ’20

Dear Breck community, Awesome things are happening every day at Breck thanks to you and the Annual Fund. I greatly appreciate all this year’s Annual Fund donors, Annual Fund volunteers, and, of course, everyone who shared a Breck story. We chose the theme of “My Breck Story” because we knew that all of us would benefit from taking a moment to reflect, share, and listen to these stories — not just the big stories, but the everyday moments that help our children grow as students, people, and citizens. These are the stories that connect us as a community, provide a longitudinal perspective, and reaffirm why we choose Breck. If you’re like me, you laughed, cried, and smiled inside as you read and watched them. I feel so fortunate and proud to be a part of this amazing community. I am so thankful to everyone who donated to the Annual Fund — parents, grandparents, alumni, teachers, staff, administrators, students, trustees, volunteers, and friends. I hope you know that your gifts to Breck’s Annual Fund helped craft more awesome stories and, for that, I thank you. With gratitude, Amy Giovanini Annual Fund Chair 2016-2017

Changing Schools Not even two weeks into her Breck experience, my daughter hopped in the car after school and declared, “I totally belong here! I love Breck!” As a parent, I could not have been happier to hear this, especially since one year prior she hated school. She was not being challenged and figured she could learn more efficiently on Google. She was probably right. At the end of her 8th grade year, she concluded that her classes were too big and impersonal, and she did not want to spend her high school years feeling like she was just a number. In our hunt for a new school, Breck stood out above the rest. My daughter, husband, and I all loved Breck’s culture and felt it would be a great fit. However, I was still concerned how a new, female ninth grader would transition, integrate, and be accepted into a group of kids who, in many instances, had been together since kindergarten. But, Breck exceeded my expectations. Nearly two years later, my daughter loves Breck even more than she did in those early days. She appreciates the incredible opportunities that Breck offers, versus what she had available to her in her other school. I now have a very happy, academicallychallenged child who is excited to go to school. (Ok, maybe not during finals!) She is inspired by her teachers who are truly passionate about teaching and sharing their knowledge. They take the time to know and understand her, and take a very keen interest in her individual learning, growth, and development. This level of caring has made all the difference. In addition, she is thriving socially in the amazingly inclusive and supportive Breck community. Breck is a very unique and special place. It has changed our lives for the better. This is why we support the Annual Fund. – A proud Breck Parent

y A Student Embraces the Power of Identity 20 /

In the spring when I heard about applications for Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC), I knew that I needed to go. Breck’s minority makes up about 35% of the population, which means that it’s not uncommon for me to be one of the few students of color in a class. Due to the lack of diversity, not only at Breck, but in the media surrounding me, I struggled with accepting my race for the longest time. Over the past four years I have tried to grow and become comfortable in my own skin, and just this fall gave my senior speech about accepting my identity. So when I found out I’d been selected to attend SDLC, I was beyond psyched. From the opening moments of the conference, all the nerves and apprehension I had about meeting new people transformed into anticipation as I felt the charged energy in the room. Although we were strangers, we had all traveled across the country to congregate and have serious conversations about issues that mattered to us. We were bonded by our passions, which fostered an environment of love, kindness, and empowerment unlike anywhere else. Between listening to incredibly inspiring speakers such as Bryan Stevenson and cheering each other on at the talent show, there were so many enjoyable moments. However, one of my favorite moments and probably the most memorable was walking into the black affinity group. Never had I seen 600+ people who looked like me sitting in one room. I don’t have enough words in my vocabulary to explain everything I was feeling, but shock, joy, giddiness, liberation, inspiration, and love will have to do. Instances like this are what made SDLC an experience that I’ll be benefiting from for a lifetime. I’m so thankful to Breck for the opportunity to attend and can’t wait to share what I’ve learned. – Seyade Tadele ’17

y Feeling Grateful

24 /

I grew up on the north side of Minneapolis and was attending a local junior high when I was introduced to Breck. A group of Breck parents reached out to my community. To this day I am not completely certain how my name surfaced but I know an invite was extended to me to visit Breck School, which at that time was located on West River Road in south Minneapolis. My father had the wisdom to know what a prestigious academic institution Breck was and, despite my initial hesitation, we accepted the invitation. Departing from my friends on the north side and starting a completely new chapter of my life was not something I was eager to do; however, my father urged me to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity that was graciously presented to me. Clearly, we did not have the resources to pay for a private school. Both my parents were blue-collar workers that lived from one paycheck to the next. Neither had a college degree but thankfully they had a vision of the many advantages a Breck education would offer. Thankfully, a scholarship was offered to me and it was accepted. In 1974, I joined the Breck community and it did not take me long to realize that Breck was going to be a challenge. My academic standing entering Breck was not the best. I had fallen behind in my previous studies and was far more occupied with other things outside of academics. Despite the challenges, it was quickly apparent that Breck was loaded with teaching staff who were passionate about education and eager to assist students and help them succeed. I will always be indebted for the encouragement I received that helped overcome that awful insecure feeling of not being bright enough to make it at Breck. My late father, too, was supportive and I know that he was very proud of me when I graduated from Breck and went on to attend college. I was the first in our family to obtain a college degree and there is no doubt in my mind that Breck played a key role toward that accomplishment. To be honest, had I not attended Breck I am not certain how my life would have unfolded. Suffice it to say, the years attending Breck from 1974 to 1976 were pivotal in getting my life focused. Graduates of Breck leave not with a question of whether college is an option but rather which college is the right choice. The continued emphasis that Breck places on academic excellence is what makes Breck what it is. – Breck Alumnus from the Class of 1976
