The early years—what a magical time in a child’s life! This stage is filled with wonder, curiosity, and joy. It’s when we build lifelong foundational learning skills. At Breck, we honor this time by immersing children in play to unleash imagination, develop skills, and instill a love of learning. Our skilled teachers give children personal levels of support and challenge with each new stage of develment. We inspire students to explore questions, engage in deep conversation, spark creativity, and become independent thinkers. Collaboration fills our learning environments. We believe in rigorous academics, character development, and community service as cornerstones of the Lower School experience. As parents, you want your children to be in a community where they are cared for and known. Where teachers believe in each child’s unlimited potential and provoke curiosity. Where students learn from one another. We want to partner with you to give your children the gift of a Breck experience. It’s just the beginning of what’s possible!

Welcome to Lower School. This is where we foster a love of learning, cultivate independent thinkers and guide children to reach their full potential. Because children are unique, we consider the broad range of their knowledge, interests, strengths, challenges, learning preferences, and experiences to help them develop best. Integrated curriculum and innovative teaching strategies are critical to engaging whole-child learning and growth.

Math is introduced with numerical thinking and hands-on activities. We know that math goes beyond basic facts. We apply math concepts to real-life, age-appropriate problems our students may experience, helping them understand math is a part of their world, not just a group of facts to memorize. By working together, students construct and understand strategies and solutions as they master each skill.

These are cherished and highly regarded roles for our students and traditions that are steeped in Breck’s history.

“Rocks! We are collecting and learning all about rocks this year. I can’t wait for our field trip to Minnehaha Falls so I can add to my collection!”

Our art and music classes help our students learn more about who they are and how to express that through the arts. Classes are led by trained professionals and include hands-on application at nearly every meeting. We also recognize the interdisciplinary nature of these classes and work together with classroom teachers to extend lessons such as music/rhythm to other areas of study like science and math.
