Forever sabah's projek padi

Tenghilan, 23 March 2021 - Forever Sabah has introduced a new brand of rice called Wagas Dati, which means “Our Rice” in the Dusun language. It is part of their Projek Padi, a project that helps revitalise rice planting in the local Sabahan communities. The project currently works with the Tinuhan and Lapasan Ulu communities in the district of Tuaran. Forever Sabah held a launch event in Tenghilan to introduce Projek Padi and Wagas Dati. During the event, a presentation was made to guests to explain the process behind the project. After that, guests were invited to watch and participate in demonstrations of traditional rice processing. Apart from that, guests were also invited to taste test the different types of rice. Local chefs were also there to present food that has incorporated the rice into their cooking. Jennifer Linggi also gave a talk about the art of basket weaving in the Sabahan community. Projek Padi was started in June 2020 by a group of enthusiastic Sabahans, surprised that supermarkets put a 10kg limit of rice per family. Sabah now only produces 25% of its rice, while depending on outside sources for the other 75%. So, the Projek Padi team decided to plant their own rice. The team was able to connect with 43 former paddy farmers in Kampung Tinuhan and Kampung Lapasan Ulu, to assist them in revitalizing the abandoned paddy field, fence against buffaloes, and plant paddy in the area. Forever Sabah received a special grant from Yayasan Hasanah, and with the help of the Drainage & Irrigation Department, they were able to restore the canal and drainage networks. 32 traditional varieties of paddy seeds were sourced from farmers in Kota Belud, Tuaran, and Kudat. Image | Srap 03

Forever Sabah has increased rice sovereignty in the communities by helping farmers find cost effective solutions to grow rice. Along with that, they have assisted farmers transition to more sustainable methods, using the System Rice Intensification methodology. With citizen science, the community measured that farmers who followed said methods have earned 40% more income. This is because they had better yields, sold their rice for better prices, and didn’t waste money on chemicals while using less seeds. Apart from Yayasan Hasanah and the Drainage & Irrigation Department, Projek Padi also collaborated with the UMS Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture, Kivatu Nature Farms, and vocational students from GKC (School for Experiential and Entrepreneurial Development). Sebangga's auto empire

V

olvo and Subaru are two of the biggest and most recognised car brands in the world. Both have long standing relationships with drivers all over the world and have garnered a following among those looking for reliable yet exciting cars. In Kota Kinabalu (KK), these two brands have one thing in common, and that is Sebangga Auto. Led by Dato’ Arif Ambrose and his dedicated team, Sebangga has become a household name in the automotive market in KK. Read on to find out what Sebangga is and why you should try and visit them anytime soon. Sebangga has been the sole KK dealer for Subaru vehicles since 2015. They have established the Subaru 3S (Sales, Service, and Spare Parts) centre for potential and existing customers in KK. Their first centre was situated at Jalan Tuaran, KK. Though, they will be moving the showroom to Sadong Jaya in the future. Since June of 2019, the Subaru centre has been upgraded to 4S, with the added “S” being Spray. Before moving on, here’s just a short explanation of what the “S” really represent. Sales is self explanatory. You can test drive, find information, and buy the cars in a dealership’s lineup with the help of their sales executives. The remaining are the after sales Services. So, you can visit the centre for your car’s annual mechanical services, find official Spare parts if and when you need them, and lastly, Spray gets your car back in tip top shape after unfortunate accidents.

05

Continuing with Sebangga’s journey in KK, in November 2019, they were appointed as Volvo Car Malaysia’s dealer-partner. This makes them the sole authorised 3S centre for Volvo cars in KK, Sabah. Currently, the centre has replaced the previous Subaru 3S centre in Jalan Tuaran. The two-storey space was built in adherence to Volvo Car’s retail standard, the VRE (Volvo Retail Experience). And what an experience that is. It features a showroom at the ground floor, a service centre, a Volvo Car Lifestyle Collection and Accessories showcase, and of course, Volvo’s latest premium lineup of cars. The S90, S60, XC40, XC60, and XC90 are all on display and available for test drives. Apart from the dealerships in KK, Sebangga has an established network of dealerships all over Malaysia. In 2016, they were among the Top 3 in sales of Subaru nationwide. In June 2018, they became the first Subaru dealer to achieve 100 units registration, while in August the same year, they were the first Subaru dealer to achieve 117 CKD (Complete Knock Down) units in sales.

Although different in concepts, both of Sebangga’s dealerships have a very welcoming vibe to them. Both have a minimalist approach in terms of making customers feel at home, however, the Volvo dealership’s space feels more refined. As I mentioned, the dealership is designed to adhere to Volvo Car’s retail standard. So, when you need to make the important decision, you’ll rest easy knowing you’re in a great space to make the right decision. Speaking of which, the right decision can’t be made without knowing any important information about the car you’re buying. This is where Sebangga’s sales executives come in. They know their cars backwards and forwards, inside and out. Providing you with all the details you need, you’ll find you’re in perfect hands when enquiring about a certain model of Volvo or Subaru car. It doesn’t stop there either, as their after sales team and technicians are also one of the best out there. If you’re ever in need of help, they'll be sure to lend a helping hand. The knowledge and efficiency they provide is on par with the premium experience they pride by. All in all, it’s their hospitality and how they make you feel at ease that makes the experience of buying and owning a Volvo or Subaru special. So, if you’re ever in search of a new car for the family, Sebangga has got you covered. Don’t hesitate to visit their dealerships and showrooms to find out more about the Japanese engineered Subaru or the luxurious Swedish designed Volvo. Either way, the Sebangga experience will always be a memorable one.

O

n the 27th of March 2021 that took place at The Owl Cafe, Foresight Musik released a new single called "RAMPAGE" along with its music video. This song will be included in Grizzlee's new album "3:27". The album has been released on every music streaming platform starting from April 1st this year. The event successfully took place while abiding the SOP guidelines set by the Ministry of Health Malaysia. The response from Tawau residents was also very encouraging and the event received positive feedback from all parties present that night.

Foresight Musik has also launched the 2021 project whereby each artist will launch an EP and album this year and will launch a Foresight Musik compilation album at the end of this year. With that, they hope that everyone can support and follow their development through Facebook and Instagram. Also, go to their YouTube channel to watch the music video for RAMPAGE. Subscribe as well for updates.

Foresight Musik is a record label based in the Tawau district of Sabah that was established in 2019. Their artists consist of 7 rappers, 2 singers and 2 producers as well as 3 visual artists. This song is their third music video project during the establishment of this company and is their first collaboration with ZnZ Productions. According to the head of Foresight Musik, Fez, the song and music video for "RAMPAGE" is entirely the result of the efforts and creativity of the Foresight Musik team in collaboration with ZnZ Productions. "My focus as a leader is to guide them to highlight their talents and be able to compete healthily with other artists out there. The dumping of talent in the music industry in Malaysia is not a problem for artists in Foresight Musik to stand out because we promise fresh products in terms of music and visual art production", he said.

Race to the finish line with Logitech's g923

R

acing fans rejoice! Now you can experience how it feels like to be behind the wheel of your favourite cars. With Logitech’s new G923 racing wheel for simulation racing games, you will surely be able to feel how intense of an experience it is to tame the fastest cars in the world. Logitech G923 is the next iteration of the classic racing wheel. Logitech built the wheel with premium materials. Made from aluminium, steel, and leather, it not only looks good but handles and feels great in your hands as well. Crafted for racing, they modernized their beloved classic design to suit the next generation of racers. And it isn’t form over function as they have integrated a center marker and rotary dials to easily access game settings. They’ve also built-in a rev indicator to show your RPM range with supported games. The award winning Logitech G design was reengineered for upgraded game physics for an unprecedented realism in your gaming experience. From the upgrades they’ve made, improvements in the force feedback system, called Trueforce, have made the feel of in-game details more noticeable. So, the feel of the asphalt or gravel, the pumping pistons, and every shift, drift, and hairpin turn is much more apparent compared to the older models. The G923 can deliver pinpoint accuracy

by Noel Jinguli Image | Logitech

and realism as their advanced firmware monitors all the current flowing through the wheel motor. It continuously adjusts voltage to match outputs from in-game physics. The pedals that come with the wheel have also been upgraded as well. It has a brushed metal appearance and is more responsive and accurate. The progressive spring mimics the performance and feel sensitive brake systems for a realistic racing experience. You can also reposition the pedals for heel-toe maneuvers and more control. The only negative issue about the wheel is that it doesn’t come with a manual gear shifter. You’ll have to add-on extra cash for what is already a pretty expensive piece of kit to get a more authentic feel when shifting gears. Another thing you’ll need to keep in mind is the need to own a compatible machine and game for this to work. Luckily, this is compatible with all modern consoles and PC, along with support for games such as Gran Turismo Sport, the Forza series, and Assetto Corsa among other racing simulation games. At the end of the day, if you’re a big fan of racing games, this is the perfect peripheral for you. If you’re merely a casual fan, you should consider the steep price tag and maybe go for more affordable options. Overall, the Logitech G923 is a very cool gaming accessory to own.

Fueling our future

D

ifferent people have different expectations when it comes to cars of the future. Of course, the general consensus is that electric cars are the next step for a more environmentally friendly solution. Though, I think we still have a long way to go to achieve very low emissions from our vehicles. So, let’s discuss, what would be the best energy source to power our vehicles? Fossil fuels are still the favoured power source for almost every machine we have, from cars to the simplest generator. It’s the most accessible type of fuel we have. However, we all know the negative effects these fuels have towards our environment. The carbon monoxide from burning fossil fuels has thinned down our atmosphere and has either directly or indirectly, caused global warming. And that’s why we need to find better ways to power our vehicles. That leads to electricity. It’s clean and we are all familiar with it. In terms of the environment, there are multiple ways of generating electricity without putting our world in jeopardy. Wind and solar energy is what mainly comes to mind. Unfortunately, generating a large amount of these renewable energy still takes large amounts of resources. There are also issues with the effects towards the ecosystem, as dams are notorious for destroying not only man made settlements but also natural habitats. Apart from renewable energy, there’s also the issue of fossil fuels still being a popular means of generating energy. Kind of defeats the purpose of using electricity doesn’t it?

by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash 13

So what else do we have? Nuclear power? Unless our bodies can withstand the dangers of radiation, I’d say we would have a long way to go ‘till nuclear power becomes viable. There is one other option, biofuel. Reusing cooking oil to power our vehicles not only solves cooking oil wastage, it also doesn’t produce high levels of carbon emissions as well. Although the technology has been developed, it still has minor problems here and there to make it reliable. The potential is there, however. Who knows, we might even be able to convert all types of waste and rubbish into power sources in the future. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking bad about electricity and the electric vehicles. It’s just that we still need to find better ways of powering our cars. Although I’m not fully sold on electric vehicles, I will admit that we’re on the right track with how much progress we’ve made in the automotive industry, with or without fossil fuel or electricity in the picture.

DESTINATION

Kivatu nature farm Everywhere you look, you will see a green background. The best part of all this is how the farm implements an environmentally friendly mindset. Entering it, you'll see a wall of plastic bottles or the row of worn out tyres, all reused as pots for plants. And it all blends into a very pleasing aesthetic for the eye. As you walk further into the farm, you’ll see rows of vegetables and flowers, all lined up beautifully. The farm also makes their own compost and uses them for more natural and organic produce. KNF features a cafe called Hinompuka Cafe that serves local traditional favourites. Not only do they use the vegetables they grew from the farm, they also use local produce to support the farmers and local communities around them. Apart from the cafe, KNF also runs a “tamu”, or community market, that not only sells fruits and vegetables, but also flowers and hand woven baskets. If you’re interested, you can click on the links in their Facebook page to place your orders. If you are ever in need of a down time to relax around lush greenery, KNF is the perfect place to be. You’ll definitely feel refreshed after spending some time here. Personally, enjoying and photographing the small details and beauty of nature is what truly helps calm my mind. And it’s safe to say, Kivatu Nature Farm has all the right elements to help out with that.

A

dmit it, we all think we know what’s in our own backyards. Well, I recently visited a wonderful place that has proven me wrong, and I am glad to be. Kivatu Nature Farm (KNF) is quite a serene destination to visit, allowing you to relax and enjoy nature at your own pace. Sit back, relax, and let me introduce you to a place that has certainly surprised me during my visit. Located just off Donggongon Town in Penampang, KNF is just a few minutes drive from the busy suburbs of Penampang. What started in 2008 as a personal project by Maria Lasimbang, has now blossomed into something bigger than she anticipated. Inspired by her visit to Hong Kong, she decided to establish the farm as part of a learning centre for the local community. When you tour around the farm and enjoy the fresh air, you’ll notice sign boards with information about the plants and equipment around you.

Go further with the volvo xc40 hybrid

T

he Volvo XC40. Yes, we’ve covered this car before, and oh boy is it a very special car. This time, Volvo has come up with an upgrade to an already awesome car, making it a plug-in hybrid that not only catches the eye but also the hearts of its owner. I’m talking about the Volvo XC40 Recharge. Without wasting time, let’s go straight to the meat of the upgrades, the “hybrid-ability” of the XC40. Like I mentioned above, it features a plug-in system to just recharge its batteries in addition to filling up the fuel tank. Designed with the purpose of preserving the planet, the combination of the electric motor and petrol engine work harmoniously for less tailpipe emissions while giving you the instant power you need. You’ll not only be able to save more on fuel, with an estimated 2.0 to 2.4 litres per 100km, but also contribute less carbon emissions to the atmosphere. The engine only contributes about

45 to 55 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre on your journey. The best part of the XC40 Recharge is its Pure Electric mode. With a fully charged battery, it allows you to commute to and from work using only the electric motor. Best of all, it doesn’t contribute any tailpipe emissions. For up to 45km in range for the Pure Electric mode, you’ll go further without worrying to plug in any time soon. The new tech doesn’t stop on the engine as Volvo has equipped the XC40 Recharge with new safety features as well. It’s now able to detect slight drifting to oncoming traffic and correct the steering to avoid a collision. Its intelligent driver assist technology is also able to detect and help you avoid collisions involving pedestrians and large animals, no matter day or night. The most convenient function for me is the ability of the sensor to warn you about cross traffic, making it easy to make your way out of a tight spot and warning you of approaching vehicles. It also helps brake automatically in case of imminent collisions. The icing on top is that you get all these new features along with all that made the XC40 special. You can go back to the previous issues when I talked about the original XC40, but the gist of it all is - you get great style along with function. As Volvo puts it, this Scandinavian plug-in hybrid SUV is designed for the city, and the rest of the world.

Dato' arif ambrose ng: Driving The Automotive Industry

eing a successful businessman will always have its challenges. However, it isn’t impossible to succeed in what you’re passionate about, especially with all the hard work you put in. And success is what Dato’ Arif Ambrose Ng has experienced from his automotive empire. This month, we had a chat with Dato’ Arif and how he has established one of Kota Kinabalu’s big names in the automotive industry.

Breeze: Hi Dato’. Why don’t we start with an introduction for our readers. Dato’ Arif: Sure. My name is Dato’ Arif Ambrose Ng. I was born and raised in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. B: What do you do and what business do you run? D: I was the Managing Director of Amverton Bhd (previously the A&M Realty Bhd), a post I took after graduating from Australia. It had a wide range of business activities such as property development and management. Building and managing golf courses, hotels, and a security agency was also part of the business. Besides that, I was also an automotive parts distributor, made plastic injection moulding for electrical & automotive parts, managed a car dealership, oil palm & durian plantation, and also F&B outlets. After I relinquished my post there, I went into semi-retirement. With my free time, I personally ventured into property development, security agency, and financial service business. Apart from that, my current business also distributes automotive parts & lubricants, while also managing a few car dealerships. These dealerships include the Volvo and Subaru brands, which have their own showrooms and service centres in Kota Kinabalu under the banner of Sebangga. B: Tell us more about Sebangga. D: Sebangga is a branch of my business that deals in the automotive market. As a brand, I built it from scratch and now see it grow not only in terms of size and popularity, but also in tandem to fulfill all my staff ’s aspirations. Under the Sebangga banner, we are most popular with our Volvo and Subaru dealerships in Sabah. B: What attracted you to Sabah? D: Well, an opportunity knocked on our doors when a friend introduced us to the world of car dealerships. Ever since then, I started my venture into the automotive market way back in 2015, when we were put in charge of a Subaru dealership here. The rest, as they say, is history. I fell in love with the state and the people as soon as I took my first steps in Sabah. I have friends in the Peninsular who are from Sabah and I always love making new friends here. While taking care of my automotive venture here, I love to learn new things about Sabah and the beautiful people here. B: So why should Sabahans look forward to using Volvo and Subaru vehicles in Sabah? D: Both car brands have amazing visions and great policies that align to the Sebangga brand. The performance of their cars in each respective range, mid and upper, are more than satisfactory for their price range. For example, Subaru has their famous boxer engine that is a great performer in the car world. In terms of safety, both these brands have undisputed and reputable records. The Subaru Forester has their Eyesight Technology while Volvo

has its policies towards zero casualties. Volvo has also always been known for their incredible safety and now, their particular hybrid cars are very environmentally friendly. B: What are the challenges running Sebangga? D: In life, we can always expect many challenges. Personally, let’s talk about seeing challenges as learning opportunities to improve myself every time. Continuous learning to improve ourselves is far more important in any business. That’s why I’m always looking for ways to enrich myself by self-actualization. I also look for opportunities to pass down knowledge to all those around me. B: What are some of the most notable achievements you’ve achieved? D: I think one of my most notable achievements is to have successfully maintained good human capital. Not only during my tenure at Amverton but also during my semi-retirement venture since 2015. I enjoy working with my staff and I’m happy that almost all of them are still working with me to this day. Dato’ Arif likes to do things that not many people dare to do. He loves exploring new and special experiences and challenges in terms of his hobbies and businesses to make him stand out and have a sense of achievement. Plus, he also enjoys spending time with loved ones when he has the chance away from work.

How to Jam, in a Traffic Jam

O

kay. Let’s be real here. Nobody, and I mean nobody, likes being stuck in a traffic jam. We Sabahans have long evolved from our “living on top of a tree” days and have developed into a staggering metropolis of our own for the past century. (Yeah, take that peninsular Malaysia.) As the population continues to thrive and expand throughout Sabah, us fellow Sabahans are solemnly yearning for the day when there are railway stations available in all districts. Unfortunately, for now, we Sabahans are reluctantly united on the road with a singular perturbation problem, traffic jam. (Yeah, I’m talking to you, Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, Jalan UMS, and you too, Jalan Lintas.) So, besides cursing in 8 different dialects in your mother tongue about the traffic jam, there are better ways in which you can utilize your time while being stuck on the road. Here’s how. 1. Listen to that podcast that you’ve been itching to hear. What is a podcast some of you asked? Well basically, its listening to two people engaged in a discussion about a particular topic or current event. Sounds fun right? There are loads of podcast channels and a myriad of topics that suits your interest that you can choose from. So, give it a try! 2. Call your mother. Do it now. Many of us might find this a silly thing to do, but honestly, how often do you call home and ask about your parents? If you’ve been giving the whole “I’ve been busy working” excuse, then now would be the best time to do it. You have no idea how much your parents yearn to hear you asking about their well-being.

by Kelvin Yong Pui Szi Image | Unsplash 21

3. Get some exercise. I bet you didn’t think you could do that while being in a car didn’t you? Whilst holding the wheel with both your hands, flap your arms rapidly like a chicken and tone those sexy triceps. It works! 4. Have a “Car”aoke (karaoke) session. Blast that radio to max volume and sing along to your favourite song till your heart’s content! It doesn’t matter if you sound like a dying seagull, the best part is, nobody can hear you! But don’t go overdramatic or else people might think you’re having a seizure in your car. 5. Use your imagination. I mean if you’re really desperate for something to do, take your phone out and scroll through your Instagram for beaches and close your eyes. Voila! You are now relaxing in the Bahamas enjoying a nice suntan. If you want to make it more believable, you can crank up the heater and enjoy the burst of hot air too. Jokes aside, having a positive mindset is always helpful during a traffic jam. Being sullen, cursing, and honking to move 2 inches closer will only make things worse for you and for everyone else. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy things as they are, because eventually it will pass.

Core Conditioning Ramadan

I

t is the Ramadan month! Here are 3 core conditioning workouts to help you strengthen the core and come out leaner at the end of the fasting month. Workouts primarily focused on core conditioning.

EXECUTION • While keeping your lumbar spine as stable as possible, rotate your thoracic spine from left to right.

Star Plank (5 sets, 25 seconds hold, - Rest 15 secs) This workout is an amazing variation to the common plank we see every day. The star plank requires a lot of core stabilisation as well as muscle activation from the upper body. Surviving this workout would give a stronger core and leave you literally feeling like a star. SETUP • Come to a full plank position with palms directly under shoulder and feet hip width apart. • Brace your core and keep a neutral spine. EXECUTION • Slowly spread your arms away; around 30cm - 45cm away from your shoulder blades. • Slowly spread your feet away; around 30cm - 45cm away from your hips. • Keep your core engaged and spine neutral and hold the position.

Thread The Needle Side Plank (4 sets, 10 Reps each side – No rest; alternate immediately) This workout puts your obliques to the test while you keep your core activated and move in a controlled manner. Well, if it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you! SETUP • Come to a side lying position. • Place your elbows under your shoulders and push your body up to a side plank position. • Align your elbow, hip, knee and heel in a straight line. EXECUTION • Keeping your core stable, slightly rotate your thoracic spine and thread your top arm into the hanging gap between your supporting elbow and ribcage. • With control, slowly thread the arm out and stretch it up overhead.

Russian Twists (5 sets, 15 Reps each side - Rest 20 secs) You don’t have to be a Russian to pull off this exercise, all you need is good form and dedication! This workout is great to help mobilise your thoracic spine and strengthen the obliques. SETUP • • • •

25

Come to a seated position, bend your knees and bring your heels onto the floor. Lean your body slightly backwards. Brace your core while keeping a neutral spine. Bring your arms slightly in front of your body and keep your elbows close to your ribcage.

Have a great workout and remember to always stay safe by being socially responsible this coming Ramadan!

DENTAL

sturdy teeth with dental implants

W

e may not realise it, but our teeth have subconsciously been a source of confidence to most of us. Even the slightest problem, like having something stuck in our teeth, will leave us embarrassed in front of people. Imagine having a few teeth missing from your mouth. Fear not though, as in this issue, we’ll be learning about dental implants with Dr. Syliva of Phi Dental. A dental implant is a surgical procedure to replace tooth roots that have been damaged or missing, with metal and screw-like posts. Considered as artificial teeth, they look and function like real ones. A major advantage of implants is the solid support for new teeth, a process that requires the bone to heal tightly around the implant. Patients usually get implants as an alternative to dentures or bridgework to restore function and aesthetics of teeth. The procedure for dental implants requires thorough evaluation to prepare for the process including a comprehensive dental exam, reviewing your medical history, and establishing a treatment plan. The surgery is also usually performed in stages, with 3-4 months of healing time in between stages. The process of placing a dental implant involves steps that include: • • • • • •

Damaged tooth removal Jawbone preparation (grafting), when needed Dental implant placement Bone growth and healing Abutment placement Artificial tooth placement

by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash 27

Fortunately, there aren’t any permanent side effects to getting dental implants. However, just be aware that after the surgery, you will experience mild discomforts like swelling, bruising, bleeding, and pain near the implant. Medication and antibiotics may be needed to ease these discomforts, while eating soft food for a while will prevent pain when eating. Most dental implants placed are made of titanium and are silver in colour. White implants are made of zirconium but are marketed as non-metal implants. It is impossible for other materials to be used as implants as they do not fuse with the bone. The main difference between implants and natural teeth is that implants are attached and will fuse to your bone. Natural teeth do not ever become part of the bone that surrounds it. Implants also don’t decay like natural teeth do. With that covered, don’t hesitate to visit your nearest dental professional and learn more about dental implants. At the end of the day, looking good will always result in us feeling good.

The car instruction manual – a blessing or a curse?

“G

ot the new car? Tick. Yippee. Goes fast. Tick. Seats comfy. Tick. Has the interactive interterrestrial injection interface doodah that everyone says changes your life. Very TICK. But what does this button do? The one with the squiggly lines? And this lever? Oops it doesn’t work the windscreen wipers. What’s that noise? Oh blimey it’s the alarm telling me I have left the door open”. A familiar scenario? I have an allergic reaction to car manuals. They look so forbidding, all fat and shiny. They whisper ‘here you will find the answer to life, the universe and EVERYTHING, if you have the courage to open this book. Many have tried and so many have failed’. This is a challenge. I open, flick past the many marvels of the 4WD magic and am into the world of differentials. They are like computer manuals. There is always the understanding gap – between the person who wrote it and the person who has to read it, poor schmuck, because they are completely stuck and may not get their article written by the deadline. The formatting has always been done by an Orc, and the reader can only speak Elvish. I digress. The other day a light came on on the dashboard. Not an unfamiliar experience. This one had squiggly lines, the ones I mention above, and a car on it. I leafed through. Maintenance. How to drive in cold weather. How to drive in hot weather. How to drive up a mountain. Down a mountain. At a steady speed. Eating a sandwich to the sound of crashing waves. Putting in your curlers (OK, I made the last two up). Nothing about swerving in this rather alarming way.

are owned by lots of different people, and perhaps it would be good to have some of them read the manual before it’s published to see if it makes any sense to them. I understand that you can buy celebrities to talk you through the instructions on how to use manuals. I am not sure I am mentally prepared for George Clooney to murmur his way through how to move the back seat, or change the oil. It’s not what I want him to be saying to me, quite frankly. My Sat Nav is always good for a larf. For a while I had John, who spoke in a very slow posh English voice which when applied to Malaysian place names was a real giggle – Kotah Kee-na-bahlooo. Quite a hoot in Kent too – Trottiscliffe is a small place that is famous for being pronounced Trosley. John didn’t know that. I doubt he will know that Mainwaring is pronounced Mannering or Cholmondeley Chumley, but I digress again. I think I will save the vagaries of English pronunciation for a later date. I have since moved on to Joyce, who is very clipped and schoolmarmy but at least she doesn’t make me laugh and lose concentration. Just before all the gentlemen reading this (if there are any) turn their noses up in disdain at this silly little woman being so ignorant, I would like to point out that we all have our fields of knowledge. I wonder if you have read the whole of Milton’s Paradise Lost? (I have, for the record.) Can you make pastry? Upholster a chair? I can – and change a tyre, and speak French, and use the designer’s program In design. So there. Now, where are the instructions to show me where I put in the screen wash...?

I found it in the end, and managed to switch it off, but I am still not entirely sure what it means. I do know I don’t want it to come on and tell me something alarming. In fact, I wonder if it is best to drive along in ignorance, untroubled by red lights, until the car grinds to a gentle halt and you have an excellent excuse to call Daddy – I mean the mechanic. Manuals range from baby talk – this is the doorhandle – to BCW ON/OFF button (eh?). There are pictures: Number 16 says Seat. I think I might have worked that out, but I still took ages to find the squiggly lines. And as for connecting my phone to the radio… Ha. That took me a good few goes. I now feel ridiculously proud as I listen to audible books in the traffic jam. The point is, cars

License to drive

M

any teenagers nowadays can’t wait for the day they turn 17. Why you may ask? Well, the reason is because once you turn 17, you are eligible to get your driving license! Getting their driver’s license is every teenager’s dream. Not only does it grant them freedom, but they get to brag about having their license too! Before you get your license, you’re always envying your friends that are able to drive. Dreaming of the day you can finally drive too. But, when that time finally rolls around, you get frustrated. It’s taking too long. It’s draining your energy. It’s stealing your social time. But it doesn’t matter right? You’ll get your license soon and you’ll be happy! That is very true. In the beginning.

Rants & Raves

become the driver among your friends! They probably love you for it too since now they can just tell their parents that you are driving. Saves them from being worried about you getting into a stranger’s car!

Most of the people I know tend to get tired of driving every day after a while. That is because they realise how tiring it is to actually drive around and sit in traffic. We kind of forget about that part before getting our license. Then, there’s the issue of “petrol money”. You try to drive less because you don’t really want to spend on that either. Now, you’re wishing that you were back in the passenger seat. Having a “driver” every day, instead of being the driver! Then again, having your license is a great achievement. For those that are still in school, this means that you can actually choose to drive to school. Well, that is if your school allows it! If not, you can finally make plans with your friends and not worry about your getting to destination! Congrats! You’ve officially

HOT WHEELS

E

ver since I was a kid, the only types of toys that interested me were Hot Wheels, toy soldiers, and dinosaurs. Now that I’ve grown up, I’ve got into the hobby of collecting diecast cars from various brands, yet Hot Wheels will always have a sweet spot in my heart. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized, I’m not the only one who is very into this hobby, as I share it with many others, not just in Sabah but also all thousands around the world. So, let me introduce you to the world of Hot Wheels. Introduced in 1968 by Elliot Handler, it was made to compete with another brand called Matchbox. The main difference between the two at the time was that Hot Wheels were designed to replicate hotrods, as opposed to Matchbox’s more “stock” aesthetics. The first batch of Hot Wheels that came out were nicknamed the “Sweet Sixteen”. Cars such as the Custom Camaro and Dodge Deora concept were introduced during the time and all featured the famous red line on each tyre wall, the first of the Red Line series. From there on, Hot Wheels has been very popular. Not only to kids, but also the collecting community. Since 1968, over 6 billion cars have been produced, with 519 million cars going through the factory doors each year. In 2018, Hot Wheels celebrated its 50th anniversary, releasing a special line of cars for collectors and kids alike. All the cars featured matte black paint with gold and blue accents. Not only that, the brand also included themed

by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash 33

cars in their mainline, with special silver wheels that have the 50th anniversary logo embossed in them. As mentioned, Hot Wheels has become so popular among adult collectors. Some sought after cars have garnered a hefty price tag that only the most willing collectors are brave enough to cash in. The rear-loading pink Beach Bomb, modeled after the Volkswagen Type-2 Bus, is the most collectable of them all. If you ever have one of these, it could fetch you up to $175,000. That’s one reason I now consider this a reasonably expensive hobby. However, I don’t ever see the popularity of Hot Wheels fading away anytime soon. The brand is always innovating and have always listened to their faithful community. Not only have they launched video games, movies, and ways to track race stats, they’ve also introduced cars that were designed or even suggested by collectors. That’s why Hot Wheels will always be synonymous to the world of diecast cars.

EASTON'S SARAWAK LAKSA 37

abah’s Number 1 Sarawak Laksa'' would be a fitting title for Easton’s Sarawak Laksa. I can safely say, I have dined on the best Sarawak Laksa found in Sabah. Named after their son, Susan and Davin started the home based business after cooking too much laksa on Easter Sunday in 2020 and shared the portions with fellow friends and family. From the positive feedback, they decided to sell their laksa. It only took 3 days to make a name for themselves. Share the food on Sunday, make a menu on Monday, and have 40 orders by Tuesday. Easton's Sarawak Laksa puts their own twist on the authentic Sarawak Laksa recipe. Davin channelled his Sarawakian roots with Susan's taste buds to make a special and very delicious broth for the dish. The main difference between their laksa compared to others is their use of chicken feet when preparing the broth. This makes for sweeter yet savoury flavours in the broth. Customers are spoiled with a big portion of the laksa which features an authentic set of toppings. Their Signature Laksa is topped with shredded chicken, egg strips, and prawns; while the Premium Bowl is the Big Bowl with added slipper lobster and scallops. They also serve Collagen Soup, a soup of the chicken feet with the laksa, which is very popular among their lady customers. Whichever version you pick, you’re bound to fall in love with Easton’s Sarawak Laksa. So order away! Contact: 010-764 1534 Image | Vance Tan @eastons_laksa

restaurant review

R

amadan season is here, and it’s the time of the year again where street food like Kebabs and Shawarma, to local restaurants serving fusions of our Mamak with Briyani rice and rendang are filling happy tummies with amazing food. Arabian food is not something new to Malaysians, we fancy the taste and spices that bring similarities to our home delicacies yet has a unique international kick to it. QBAiK started 2 years ago in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah with their first outlet in Sadong Jaya, before they moved to their current base in 1Borneo. It’s the first in Asia Pacific and currently the only fast-food chain that boasts a tasteful Arabian menu, brought in directly from an experienced Arabian himself. They cater to people to experience the authentic Arabian taste. The food is family friendly and perfect for this coming Ramadan season and what better way to also keep them in mind for Raya celebration as well. QBAiK focuses with a fast-food concept in mind, yet still serving Arabian cuisine to your plate. The food selection ranges from burgers, fried chicken buckets, shawarma wraps, all the way to

Qbaik: Sabah’s first arabic fast food vendor

Nasi Briyani and Nasi Mandy - their signature bestsellers. Known for their spices and herbs for Arabian delicacies, QBAiK’s nasi briyani has a subtle taste that is mostly leaning towards a sweeter side on their sauces and gravy base. Among Signatures that customers rave and topped as bestsellers is their Nasi Arab Mandy – Chicken, but also available in Lamb. So what is Mandy? It’s a traditional dish from Arab consisting of rice with a blend of spices and herbs, traditionally cooked in a pit underground. What is the difference between Briyani and Mandy? From the way it is cooked and served; Mandy has a smoky flavour to the Basmati rice and it is cooked with spices while the meat is usually marinated with Mandy herbs and grilled to golden brown. A slight difference from QBAiK’s regular Fried Chicken selections, but that’s the Arabian experience to it, served alongside their Arabiac Sweet Sauce. Some highlights include their Signature Family Platters that feed a family of 4-5 pax, and their Arabic rice selections. Their Family Platters are served hot in a silver dome, to keep the food warm and steamy as you enjoy the meal. Overall, QBAiK serves a

good portion that is not too overpowering, as you can have a balanced serving of rice and meat. The platter also comes with a serving of pickled cucumber to freshen up and balance out your taste buds! Adopting the fast-food chain concept in mind, their preparation time and serving are reasonable and speedy enough to still cater to a variety of customer preferences. QBAiK’s Arabic Broast Chicken buckets are also local favourites at an affordable price for sets of Fried Chicken, Fries, Bun, Salad and Drinks. One noteworthy shoutout to their amazing Arabian Garlic Sauce, the perfect dip for Broast Chicken, Rice, Wraps or Burgers! You will miss out on a major gastronomic experience, if you went for the chilli sauce or ketchup. The garlic sauce might look like your average mayonnaise, let us assure you it is highly recommended and will definitely leave you craving for more.
