REPORT

FINDING THE CORNERSTONE

Will you be sacrificing your weekend in the sweltering heat stretching dough for a crowd of spectators? Ashraf Daniel Anuar, a 19-year-old Bakery & Pastry student, relished the buttery aroma of freshly baked buns filled with Tausa that these initial spectators made following his demonstration. This article delves into gearing volunteering initiatives towards our youths to encourage greater participation.

Youth.Gov reported that college students who volunteered performed academically better and they are less inclined to engage in misdemeanors. Laetitia Anwen, a fourth year Cosmetology student at Keningau Vocational College began volunteering during her primary school years at an orphanage with her parents. Seeing others struggle in life fueled her to work harder in school. She had the highest CGPA in her programme while assuming prominent posts in her district’s Leo and subsequently Lions Club.

Local studies revealed that many Malaysians aged between 20 until 24 were introduced to volunteering through university’s programmes and their main reason to partake in social welfare work was to gain soft skills mainly leadership and problemsolving which they deemed to be pivotal in enhancing their

career prospects. Jackrison Lo, a senior at a vocational institution who has enrolled in a construction technology programme, expressed similar motivation upon embarking on a school building refurbishing initiative which trained him to develop greater work ethics.

Nevertheless, there have been some drawbacks which may impede efforts in mobilizing more youths to join community projects. UN Volunteers posited that many young people felt frustrated when they were expected to merely carry out ideas from the older generation than to formulate and execute their own. Furthermore, lack of protection and support for young people rendered them susceptible to being exploited. Jackrison Lo stated that there was a myriad of insecurities that teenagers experienced when engaging in community services particularly those who were new to such efforts. Therefore, preemptive measures are imperative to address the unmet needs of youth volunteers.

Furthermore, Youth. Gov claimed that youths from disadvantaged background believed that they could not make any difference in their community. Laetitia Anwen argued that most youths are so accustomed to doing everything remotely due to the convenience of digital technology and getting them to first-hand experience in-person community work is the most viable way to foster their interest and self-efficacy. It takes the head, heart and hands approach to convince the youths.

The inaugural Business Events Forum - “BE in Sabah” took place from 29 February to 1 March at the prestigious Sabah International Convention Centre. Renowned speakers from the business events industry shared their expertise and perspectives during the conference. Mr. Sumate Sudasna, President of Thailand Incentive and Convention Association, Vice President of AFECA Asia, Managing Director of Conference & Destination Management Thailand, delivered valuable insights into regional trends and best practices. Mr. John Burke, GM of Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, offered strategic perspectives on destination competitiveness and effective event management strategies.

In addition to the insightful sessions, BE in Sabah also featured engaging workshops and networking opportunities where participants could connect, collaborate, and build relationships. A welcoming dinner on the first day of the event provided a relaxed and convivial atmosphere for attendees to unwind and exchange ideas in a more informal setting.

Overall, the inaugural BE in Sabah Conference was a resounding success, underscoring Sabah’s potential as a dynamic and competitive player in the global business events arena. Through collaboration, innovation, and a shared vision for growth, Sabah is poised to elevate its status as a leading destination for business events in the Asia Pacific region and beyond.

BADTHEHOOD: BROTHERS FROM THE HOOD

What started out as a clash between people of similar talents gave birth to a local group of talents that would soon set the stage of Sabah on fire with their music. Introducing BadTheHood, a group of hip-hop rappers currently with seven active members. Those members are Opie, Ray, Wewekskii, DDecks, Lowbet, Math, and Karto. The name of the group resembles the word ‘brotherhood’ to signify their brotherly bonds with each other.

Music has become a major interest to them since June of 2016, when they first released a song called Rong Gang, featuring some of the big names in the Malaysian rap scene today. Rong Gang is a diss track they composed as a reply to another local group, which made the situation a bit heated up. However, the disagreement was then concluded once they hashed it out with their talents.

Even though they’re well-known for their rap and hip-hop music, BadTheHood also learns, listens to, and explores different genres such as R&B, classical, and much more. This helps them to understand and improve their art of rapping, all while conveying their journey from where they came from to where they are today in their music. Now, not only do they have their

own audiences, but they have also done multiple collaborations with some of our local and uprising artists, such as Jordan Queka with Ray on Keeping The Heat and Wewekskii with his brother Neo, called Rock Kid. One of their recent collaborations was with Vape Addict.

Balancing their work with their passion has proven to be a challenge for them. Some of them had made sacrifices in order to attend performances or meetings to plan for their next step. Even so, it didn’t stop them from pursuing their passion while trying to make ends meet.

Members of BadTheHood each have their own career, which some might find surprising. They have teachers, emcees, DJs, and even businessmen, to name a few. Other than music, the group members also enjoy dancing, which is one of their hobbies. A majority of the members are dancers, each experienced in a different type of choreography. Some of them even work as dance instructors.

A bigger stage awaits them in the future as they slowly make their way to the top. Upcoming singles and albums are currently on the way, and they have several finished singles in their vault just waiting to be released.

Fans can listen to their songs available on Spotify and YouTube.

Equipped with a touchscreen, push-to-talk button for any voice-controlled commands, analog scroll wheel, microphone, speakers, and a 360-degree rotational camera called the Rabid Eye, this device aims to do what the smartphone does, except with the help of an integrated AI that runs on the Large Action Model (LAM). LAM is a foundational model that understands and executes human intentions on computers across all interfaces. It can learn interfaces from any software, regardless of the platform, and is designed to trigger actions on behalf of users.

Imagine Bixby or Siri, but it can do more than just googling stuff up for you. R1 provides quick responses, 10 times faster than most voice AI projects, with an average response time of 500 milliseconds. Even though it’s voice-controlled, you can still interact with R1 through speech, typing, or by shaking the device to activate the keyboard. The device offers faster web browsing and efficient information retrieval, ranging from stock prices to movie cast details.

This means that R1 is capable of planning an entire trip, including flights, accommodations, and activities, depending on your preferences, whether it’s for a business trip or maybe just a relaxed schedule for recreational purposes. Of course, you can also confirm and customize each option accordingly. Other than being your secretary, R1 is also capable of many more tasks that includes real-time language translation, ordering foods with Foodpanda, ordering a Grab ride service, and even running Spotify. For more specific tasks, R1 also has a “teach mode” where you can show it how to perform other tasks, enabling it to learn new skills. This feature allows users, regardless of their technical background, to teach R1 new abilities.

But how about the hardware specs? R1 uses a MediaTek Helio P35 octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. The device uses a USB-C to charge. These are good enough to allow R1 to show off its capabilities, but it’s definitely behind when it comes to gaming. Though the R1 was never designed to be a gaming device,.

Now you probably have a few questions in mind already. When will it come out? How much is it? Where can I get one of my own? The Rabbit R1 is available to be pre-ordered on their website for 199 USD on rabbit.tech, which roughly translates to RM950. It will be released sometime around this year, with no specific date.

The R1 doesn’t aim to replace smartphones and their colossal performances, but it certainly does open up the door for a new generation of devices using AI to navigate through the device. With the introduction of Rabbit R1 and its technological capability, how will this shape the path of AI development for us? That is a question only the future can answer.

AUTOMOTIVE

HPERODUA, TOYOTA, DAIHATSU?

ave you ever noticed that our second Malaysian car company (I’m not being condescending, PERODUA literally stands for Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua) has cars that look identical to cars by Toyota and Daihatsu? Well, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you, because they’re all mostly the same cars. Here’s why.

PERODUA, Daihatsu, and Toyota have somewhat of a mutual relationship. I won’t be going in too deep with percentage shares and whatnot. First of all, Daihatsu and PERODUA have been close partners since the latter was established in 1993. PERODUA doesn’t design or engineer its own components, parts, or engines. They have always been using Daihatsu parts and designs since the Kancil was introduced. In fact, Daihatsu even owns a percentage of shares of PERODUA as well.

Now, where does Toyota come in? Well, Toyota became the parent company of Daihatsu since they bought majority shares in 1998, until Daihatsu became wholly-owned by Toyota in 2016. Confusing? Put simply, PERODUA relies on Daihatsu for engineering and parts (while Daihatsu also owns part of PERODUA), and Toyota owns Daihatsu.

I hope that explains why the current PERODUA Alza looks a lot like the Toyota Veloz (based off the Daihatsu Xenia) or the PERODUA Aruz like the current Toyota Rush (based off the Daihatsu Terios). And it’s been like this for ages. The PERODUA

Kancil, Kelisa, and Viva were based on different generations of the Daihatsu Mira. The PERODUA Kenari? A Daihatsu Move. This is also why you see PERODUA owners rebadging or modifying their cars to look like their Daihatsu counterparts. Cool, or not, that’s for you to decide.

Now, is it bad that PERODUA doesn’t necessarily design their own cars and parts? Well, honestly, apart from the lack of creativity, no. This means Malaysians get to enjoy the benefits of Japanese technology, abundance of compatible spare parts, and for lower prices as well. There are some downsides though. Although they share engines and parts, PERODUA will not necessarily get the more powerful stuff. Turbo-charged variations for certain models, maybe. I’m mostly bummed we didn’t get any of the two-door variations of the Daihatsu Mira in Malaysia.

At the end of the day, this is just a gist of a complicated (to me) relationship between PERODUA, Daihatsu, and Toyota. Not many know of this relationship, and that’s okay because now you know. Just know that if you see a two-door Daihatsu Mira being hauled on a flatbed, it might’ve been imported from Japan and not necessarily been a chopped and modified Kelisa.

DESTINATION SIPITANG

SATAY

Considered the best satay in Sabah, Sipitang Satay is the town’s trademark food, just like how we have Tenom Coffee and Tuaran Noodle in Sabah.

Sipitang, the biggest town near the Sabah-Sarawak border in Malaysia, is a popular pitstop for travelers heading between Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei. Despite its small-town charm with no fancy malls or hotels, it’s a favorite spot to take a break, grab some delicious satay, and enjoy the coastal views after a long drive. And it’s from here that the fame of Sipitang Satay has spread across Borneo.

To uncover the secrets behind Sipitang Satay’s irresistible flavor, one must embark on a nearly three-hour drive from KK to Sipitang. As you arrive in Sipitang town, the tantalizing aroma of grilled satay fills the air, a signature scent of the town.

Once in town, make your way to Sipitang Esplanade, which houses a bustling hawker center. The hawker center has approximately 20 stalls offering an array of satay and other local delicacies.

Malaysia’s most popular street food, satay (also known as sate or satai in Malay) originated from Java, Indonesia, and has existed since the 15th century. Malaysian satay is crafted from tender and juicy diced or sliced pieces of marinated chicken, beef, or lamb (or mutton). These meat pieces are skewered and barbecued over charcoal embers, imparting a delightful smoky and tangy flavor.

To fully savor your satay experience, dip each skewer into the thick peanut sauce (or satay sauce), which is considered the soul of satay. The savory meat pairs wonderfully with the sweet and creamy sauce, enhancing the overall flavor and mouthfeel of the dish.

Satay Siga-Siga is highly recommended among all the satay stalls. The seats at Satay Siga-Siga are always the first to be fully occupied during the day.

Why does Sipitang Satay taste so good? Eating is a multisensory experience, engaging tastes, sights, sounds, smells, and emotions. These senses collectively shape our perception of food and contribute to the pleasure it brings. The multisensory atmosphere of Sipitang town is shaped by several factors:

1. Emotions: Many visitors to Sipitang are holidaymakers with their families, and their relaxed and positive moods heighten their senses, enhancing their enjoyment of the satay.

2. Sights: The breathtaking panoramic sea view and stunning sunset at Sipitang Esplanade add to the overall experience.

3. Sounds: The soothing sea breeze and gentle lull of the waves create a relaxing auditory backdrop.

4. Smells: The tantalizing aroma of sizzling satay permeates the air, further enriching the sensory experience.

The next step from here is just make that trip to Sipitang to enjoy the satay there. May you have a pleasant drip and dining experience with friends and family.

The heat brings not only discomfort but also direct and indirect dangers that we must address. Let’s explore the risks of heat and how we can cool off in eco-conscious ways.

The Dangers of Rising Heat

Direct Impact on Health:

• Heat-related Illnesses: Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion, cramps, and heatstroke, posing risks to our physical well-being.

Whether you’ve indulged in delectable feasts during the festivities or simply seeking a fresh start, now is the perfect time to embark on a fitness journey. To help beginners get started on the right foot, here are five effective training methods to consider post-Hari Raya:

1. Strength Training:

Building muscle strength and endurance through exercises like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses is essential for beginners. Strength training not only enhances muscle tone but also boosts

metabolism and improves overall body composition. Start with lighter weights and gradually increase resistance as you become more comfortable with the movements.

2. Bodyweight Exercises:

Utilizing exercises like push-ups, lunges, and planks, which require no equipment and can be done anywhere, is an excellent option for beginners. Bodyweight exercises help improve strength, stability, and flexibility while engaging multiple muscle groups simultaneously. Begin with modified versions of these exercises and progress to more challenging variations as you build strength and confidence.

3. Cardiovascular Training:

Improving heart health and endurance through activities like running, cycling, or swimming is crucial for overall fitness. Beginners can start with low-impact activities like brisk walking or cycling and gradually increase intensity and duration as their fitness level improves. Incorporating a variety of cardio exercises helps prevent boredom and keeps workouts engaging.

4. Interval Training:

Alternating between high-intensity exercise and rest periods is highly effective for burning calories, improving cardiovascular fitness, and increasing metabolic rate. Beginners can try simple interval workouts like alternating between jogging and sprinting or cycling at varying speeds. As fitness improves, increase the duration of high-intensity intervals and decrease recovery time.

5. Flexibility and Mobility Training:

Enhancing range of motion and reducing the risk of injuries through practices like yoga or Pilates is essential for beginners. These training methods focus on proper alignment, breathing techniques, and body awareness, promoting relaxation and stress relief. Start with beginner-friendly classes that emphasize basic poses and movements, gradually progressing to more advanced practices.

DENTAL EMPOWERING

SMILES: MERCY MALAYSIA’S CLEFT LIP & PALATE RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY PROGRAMME

MERCY Malaysia Sabah Chapter has reaffirmed its commitment to providing healthcare services to underprivileged communities with its recent Cleft Lip & Palate Reconstructive Surgery programme held at Hospital Lahad Datu, Sabah. From 26 February to 1 March 2024, 16 specialists, including oral maxillofacial surgeons, anaesthesiologists, and a paediatrician, collaborated to bring smiles to 30 patients, with another 31 set to benefit from this initiative. Among the specialists were Dr. Sylvia Lim of Phi Dental, and Dr. Rubinderan Muthusamy, an Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeon of Hospital Lahad Datu.

The Grand Smile Operation Initiative aims to provide equitable medical services to financially challenged and marginalised patients, ensuring they receive expert care comparable to others. It also serves to raise awareness within the community about the availability of specialised treatments for cleft patients at Hospital Lahad Datu.

This ongoing initiative, now in its second year, involves around 10 Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgeons, 4 Anesthesiologists, and 6 Pediatric Medical Specialists. However, it’s not just a camp effort; the entire Hospital Lahad Datu team, including specialists from various fields, collaborates seamlessly. Last year saw approximately 60 surgeries, with this year’s target set at around 70 patients, subject to funding availability from NGOs.

Despite the complexity of procedures, time constraints were not an issue at Hospital Lahad Datu. Each patient received adequate time based on their needs, ensuring the highest quality of care. The surgical sequence includes various stages from birth to adulthood, addressing different aspects of cleft lip and palate conditions. Besides the Grand Smile Operation Initiative, Hospital Lahad Datu also conducts oncology services, tumour surgeries, and orthognathic surgeries, showcasing its comprehensive approach to oral healthcare.

Notably, Sabah has recently embarked on Advanced and Complex Craniofacial surgeries, a testament to the region’s growing expertise in healthcare. Collaboration across specialties, including Neurosurgery, Oral & Maxillo-facial Surgery, ORL, Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, and Ophthalmology, has enabled Hospital Likas, Sabah, to provide advanced craniofacial care, reducing the need for overseas referrals.

Project coordinator Dr. Rubinderan spearheaded this initiative, supported by a dedicated team along with Hospital Lahad Datu’s director, Dr Andi Shamsurezal Mohd Sainal, as advisor. Dr. Rubinderan also led a team in 2023 in a historical procedure to remove a 1kg growth from a woman’s face.

The success of these initiatives reflects Sabah’s commitment to elevating healthcare standards and providing intricate medical management locally, ensuring a brighter future for all patients.

RANTS & RAVES

QUESTIONABLE

Ramadan season is here, so that means that Ramadan bazaars are all around KK this time of year. It’s a time of sharing as these bazaars bring everyone together. It doesn’t matter whether you’re Muslim or not, everyone enjoys browsing through the myriad of Ramadan favourite dishes and pastries. I’m personally fond of the Nasi Kerabu I used to get during my time studying in the peninsular.

But that’s the thing, I haven’t been to any Ramadan bazaars since I finished my studies, at least it’s not as memorable of an experience as it once was to me. This is a hot and personal take, but it isn’t as special of an experience to me nowadays. It just feels like almost every vendor is selling the same dishes these days and nothing really stands out. Plus, I feel like you can get all said dishes all year round as night markets and vendors are open for business regardless of the celebration.

Then there’s the issue of the price tags vendors are asking for. Though, this point is understandable since ingredients are getting expensive. What isn’t understandable, or excusable for the matter, is the hygiene aspect. This isn’t something new or specifically only happens during Ramadan bazaars, it’s been happening everywhere. But it gets a lot more attention since Ramadan is huge and social media is a thing these days. The uncovered food to “entice” buyers, fly infested food, and vendors trying to make good of their actions but still manage to fail. I

mean, I get it, you put on gloves to be more hygiene minded. But don’t forget to take them off and put on new ones when you handle your phone or cash. It just defeats the purpose at the end of the day.

Last but not least, I have to talk about some of the wasting that’s going on. Some vendors expect huge crowds or their food items to sell out. However, things don’t always go to plan and the food and drinks that aren’t sold will be wasted. I’ve seen vendors draining their leftovers into drains or the trash. Some vendors lower their prices just before closing shop, but again, not all the food will be bought. It’s just a shame to see the food go to waste.

So what should they do? Well, I’m honestly not qualified to give a definitive solution, I’m just a regular joe ranting about what I see. Maybe they could donate the food, but I think there’s a limit to that as well.

At the end of the day, either you’re the buyer or the vendor, just be mindful of what I’ve ranted about. Stay safe out there people!

How Taylor Swift Impacts An Economy

POP CULTURE

Concerts are fun, or at least that’s what I’ve heard. I haven’t been to any big concerts per say, but I imagine it’s mostly the same experience if you love the artist or the music. I’m sure you know where I’m going with this, since one of the biggest concerts in South East Asia just happened. Yes, I’m talking about Taylor Swift’s recent concert in Singapore.

The Eras Tour started in March of 2023, where Taylor Swift kicked it off in Glendale, Arizona in the US. The tour will take her across five continents for 152 shows and will end at Vancouver, Canada in December of 2024. And among those shows is the Singapore concert which recently happened this past month. Unsurprisingly, the show has brought in more than 350,000 fans into Singapore’s National Stadium.

Also unsurprising, those 350,000 fans aren’t all from Singapore, as many have travelled from all across the South East Asian region to see Taylor. You could just imagine how much money that has brought in, with tickets starting at RM370 and topping up at RM1,190. Taylor, her crew, and the organisers might have made top dollar from this one concert alone. However, the positive impact doesn’t just stop there.

Since this issue is related to “business events”, let’s take a look at the concert from a more financial view. You see, Singapore’s economy also benefited from the concert as well. Yes, Taylor stayed at the Capella Singapore, a five-star villa which costs more to stay a night than what I would make in 5 years.

But look at it this way. The many fans coming from all over the region also contributed a lot towards Singapore’s economy. I mean, they would have to pay for their accommodation, the food they eat, the rides they take going around Singapore, these are all the ways fans helped Singapore’s economy. This doesn’t even factor in the sightseeing and shopping some fans might’ve done during their stay.

Hosting a concert for a big name like Taylor Swift has certainly indirectly boosted Singapore’s economy. Looking to the future, it will surely encourage more big name artists to perform there. And the cycle continues as these artists will attract fans, fans spend, the economy benefits, and more big names come.

BEAUTY The Art of Perfume:
Perfume:
A GUIDE TO WEARING FRAGRANCE EFFECTIVELY
Photographer & Venue:

Datin Munira Mohd Iwan, affectionately known as Putey by her friends and followers, is the founder of Trés Perfume. Her inspiration stems by cherished memories of her grandmother who would lovingly apply perfume on her before school each day. These fond recolletion is one of the driving force behind her desire to create a fragrance that encapsulates the essence of those cherished moments.

With a commitment to affordability, Trés Perfume aims to make luxurious scents accessible to everyone. Each fragrance is meticulously designed to evoke a sense of exclusivity, with careful attention given to every detail, from the packaging to the choice of scent, ensuring a truly captivating olfactory experience.

Perfume is a powerful accessory that can enhance your personal style and leave a lasting impression. However, wearing perfume correctly is an art that requires attention to detail and subtlety. Follow these tips to ensure you’re making the most of your signature scent:

1. Choose the Right Perfume: Select a fragrance that complements your personality, style, and the occasion. Consider factors such as your skin type, the season, and the time of day.

2. Less is More: Remember that perfume should be discovered, not announced. Apply it sparingly to pulse points such as wrists, neck, and behind the ears. A little goes a long way, and over-application can be overwhelming and off-putting.

3. Layering Technique: For a longer-lasting scent, consider layering your perfume by using matching or complementary scented body lotion or shower gel. This creates a subtle fragrance trail that lasts throughout the day.

4. Avoid Rubbing: After applying perfume, resist the urge to rub your wrists together. This friction can alter the scent and diminish its longevity. Instead, let the perfume dry naturally on your skin.

5. Mind Your Environment: Be mindful of the setting and the people around you when wearing perfume. In crowded or confined spaces, opt for a lighter, more subtle fragrance to avoid overwhelming others.

By following these simple guidelines, you can master the art of wearing perfume with confidence and finesse, leaving a subtle yet memorable impression wherever you go.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Right off the highway in Putatan sits a quaint restaurant and cafe called UTAN, which colloquially means forest or jungle. With a concept you almost never see in Kota Kinabalu, it features predominantly outdoor seating. As soon as you enter UTAN, you’re immediately surrounded with lush greenery. It won’t be surprising to feel a sudden relaxing and calming feeling during your visits. You’ll also notice two tall towers made out of bamboo strategically nestled within the space. Not only do they act as unique art pieces, these towers also function as cooling towers to cool the surrounding.

Inspired by a need to create awareness towards environmental preservation, owner Jason designed UTAN from the ground up after discovering the almost dilapidated workshop right in front of an office space he was designing. Wondering what he could do with the space, he decided it would be a good spot for environmental talks while serving good food.

The food at UTAN stems from loved dishes that Jason grew up with and more. In the spirit of community and collaboration, he invites his staff and the public to share their dish or recipe to be featured in UTAN’s menu providing a unique blend of cuisine from all backgrounds to visitors. Think of it as experiencing a community cookbook in a restaurant setting.

Starting it off with the shareables, we tasted the Classic Malaysian Satay, Tempura Prawns, and the Tauhu Bergedil UTAN. Both the beef and chicken satay were plump and full of flavour, even without the peanut sauce. The batter for the prawns made them oh so crispy, perfectly cooked to a golden brown. Their stuffed

UTAN: NATURE PLUS WHOLESOME FOOD EQUALS A HAPPY SOUL

tofu were crisp on the outside and tender on the inside with a generous filling, regardless if you opted for the beef or chicken options.

The main attraction, at least to the Breeze team, is the Classic Lontong Lumiati, an Indonesian dish brought to us by Jason’s mother-in-law. The broth is super creamy and savoury. The rice cakes were so soft, they practically melted in my mouth.

One dish that’s bound to make you sweat in delight is the Tom Yam. A spicy yet sour broth pairs well with the swimmingly sumptuous seafood in it. The fish balls are plump while the prawns are so fresh, you’d think they were just caught fresh from the sea.

My personal favourite was the Udang Galah Asam Pedas, a somewhat simple looking dish that surprised me to say the least. Although the meat of the huge prawn was a bit difficult to get to due to its thick skin. The effort was definitely worth it as the assam pedas flavours was on point. It didn’t overpower the slight smokiness of the prawn, which I enjoyed very much.

Then we have the Oxtail Asam Pedas, which was I was pleasantly surprised with. I’m not sure why, but I usually expect a more creamy taste and texture when it comes to oxtail, but these were different in a good way. The asam pedas flavour in this rendition of oxtail was more prominent, making it stand out against my past experience of eating such a dish. Plus, the meat simply slides off the bone, making for an enjoyable eating experience.

Next up is the Bakso Soup Tulang. Another Indonesian dish that stands out and gives the other bakso a run for their money. The bakso, which are the meatballs, are the stars of the show. The texture is slightly different compared to other beef meatballs I’ve had, giving it its own unique experience to eat. whileIt has a balanced beefy-ness that doesn’t overpower and instead complements the overall dish nicely.

UTAN’s rendition of the Malaysian favourite Nasi Lemak isn’t too shabby either. The key to a good Nasi Lemak is the sambal, and UTAN doesn’t disappoint in the flavour department. It isn’t too spicy, so everyone can enjoy it. If you can take the heat, you could opt for a spicier version of the sambal too. As for the side of beef rendang, I love the tenderness of the beef and the impeccable blend of spices they used.

The last of the dishes is the Ayam Goreng ala Kampung served with a side of Nasi Kuning Pandan. Jason expressed pride for the Fried Chicken in this dish as he contributed a lot of inspirations to the recipe. He should be too, as the chicken was tender while the flavours of the spices he used all came together very well. My personal take is this could’ve easily been my favourite dish of the day with a bit more spice to the blend..

UTAN also serves refreshing mocktails to wash down the filling and hearty meal you’ve had. We definitely recommend you try out the Lemongrass Cinnamon and Hawaiian Blue to quench your thirst. We also recommend the Virgin Sparkling Mojito, which were both refreshing in their own way. The former having a hint of tartness while the latter being sweeter option.
