a passion for teaching by Ms. Karen Hitchen

Ms. Karen Hitchen, the new Head of Primary at Kinabalu International School shares / reflects on the KIS community’s experience during the pandemic and how passion and pastoral care is a paramount ingredient in nurturing the growth mindset of a resilient, adaptable global citizen in the ever changing world.

A

fter 20 plus years of teaching, I have seen a lot of teaching fads come and go - but the one thing that has never gone out of fashion is passion. A teacher must be passionate about what they do in order to do it well. Even after all this time in teaching, I remain ever passionate about providing, not only the best education but nurturing the whole child so that they leave the school better able to navigate the complex world we live in. When I am interviewing prospective teachers, I want to hear and see that passion in the way they talk about the students they work with. Only then, will I know they are good teachers. Passionate teachers inspire a love of learning in their students; when students love to learn they are engaged and inevitably learn more. Whatever the lesson may look like, you can guarantee success if the teacher inspires children to want to achieve the end goal. Passion in a classroom creates a positive learning environment that leads to effective teaching and learning. Passionate teachers strive to do their very best for their students. Even through the pandemic, a time of turmoil for many, I have seen this passion continue to lead the way. Teachers have had to adapt at an insane pace, to completely change the way they teach overnight and yet still they have done it with passion. They found new passions in the way that they taught, using technology to take teaching and learning to new depths.

face when learning something new or developing a new skill. Students with growth mindsets understand the importance of persistence and determination. By changing the way you think, you can change the way you learn. During the pandemic, we took our emphasis on pastoral care to new levels. We found new ways to connect with the students, to make sure they were not just completing the work that we assigned but that they were doing okay; they were mentally well. Every teacher held one to one video calls with each student, to check in on them and discuss any issues they were having or just to have a ‘chat’. Teachers invited students to live social sessions where the students could interact with their friends outside of lesson time and play games. The school held a wellbeing day where students could focus on non-academic activities and spend time with their families. The staff actively nurtured conversations about well-being so that students knew it was okay to talk about anything with them. During this time, the school counsellor also played a huge role in supporting not only the students but the whole family. Essentially, we made sure the whole community knew we were available to support in any way we could not just academically. The resilience I saw in many of the students, during this time, was astonishing. I believe this, in part, is due to the amount of time and effort our teachers put into connecting with their students; finding out about what interests them; what makes them learn and by instilling a growth mindset early on. This allowed students to realise the importance of making mistakes, that making mistakes is how we learn, that persistence is the key and to never give up. When I think about the future that these students will grow into adults in, an inevitably ever changing world, these skills: resilience, adaptability, perseverance and the skills taught through the growth mindset concept will be the ones that will help them to be successful in life. We endeavour to empower students to shape their own future and to become lifelong learners.

At KIS, we are passionate about pastoral care. We pride ourselves on fostering a sense of belonging for students so that they feel happy and want to be in school. We have always been driven to build strong relationships with our students, to communicate, listen, empathise and have patience so that they feel comfortable and safe; another essential ingredient for effective learning. Not long before the pandemic, we made a conscious effort to teach students about growth mindset. Every class now starts the year with a unit of work based around this. A growth mindset is essential in helping students to overcome obstacles they may Kinabalu International School is accredited by the Council of International At KIS, the appointment and retention of well-qualified, skilled educators the high standard of education they provide. 10 ‘N go: authentic egyptian restaurant

uthentic Egyptian restaurant, 10 ‘N Go is in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah!

Situated at 88 Marketplace, 10 ‘N Go is operated by Egyptian husband and wife, Ahmed Yousry and Shaymaa, in which they serve authentic homey Egyptian cuisine, from Kebabs and Shawarma to Baklava and Om Ali, and many more! The name 10 ‘N Go came about right in the middle of the pandemic during 2021. As full capacity dine-in was not available yet, and to comply with the SOPs at the time, 10 N’ Go adopted the concept of customers getting their RM10 food takeaways and go. However, the restaurant was initially inspired by Ahmed Yousry’s family restaurant as well as their long 4 generations history of involvement in the Food & Beverage industry in Egypt. Before moving to Sabah, Ahmed Yousry was living in Kuala Lumpur and would occasionally come to Kota Kinabalu for business. During one of his business trips in Kota Kinabalu, he remembered craving for some middle eastern food but could not find any that satisfied his longing for the authentic original taste of home. Thus, after some thinking, he was set on opening 10 ‘N Go in Sabah. Fast forward to today, the first branch of 10 ‘N Go is now available in Sabah! What’s unique about 10 ‘N Go is that they source all their ingredients, and even their chefs are from the middle east! Ahmed’s wife, Shaymaa, is the head chef in 10 ‘N Go, where she 18

would prepare the main dishes for the restaurant and check the quality of the food every day. They also imported a rice chef from Yemen to cook the rice to achieve that authentic smokey taste of Egyptian rice, as well as 2 BBQ chefs from Egypt. According to Shaymaa, wife to Ahmed and also as the head chef in 10 ‘N Go, she cooks all the food served in 10 ‘N Go with love, care, and personal touch. Taking the ‘taste like Mom’s cooking’ saying to a personal level, all the food she cooks at 10 ‘N Go, she will also feed it to her children as she truly believes in the quality and taste of the food. Moreover, to maintain the standard of their food, 10 ‘N Go also uses only high quality imported ingredients from the Middle

Ahmed with his Family in Egypt

East to ensure the authentic taste of all the food they serve. Ahmed believes in the potential of 10 ‘N Go to grow and be one of the leading restaurants that provide authentic Arab food. Furthermore, he also believes that good food and good service comes from within the frontlines of the restaurant, which is the staff. One of his precious moments with 10 ‘N Go is their bonding trip to Karambunai, where all staff were treated to many fun outdoor beach games and activities. For him, his staff are the most important element to 10 ‘N Go’s success. He takes care of all his staff and ensures their wellbeing, by providing comfortable air conditioned accommodations, fresh cooked food everyday and even bonuses to motivate and encourage their efforts, as he believes that in order to grow, when the staff are happy, it would be reflected back in the work they give. What’s next for 10 ‘N Go is that they are ready for catering and currently expanding their catering services on a wider scale. Ahmed also hopes to open up more branches in Malaysia and start a franchise of authentic Egyptian cuisine in Asia. According to Ahmed, with the first branch of 10 ‘N Go at 88 Marketplace Kota Kinabalu, he hopes to open another 10 branches in Sabah, and followed by more branches in Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu, Johor, and more cities in Malaysia. And once they hit 40 branches in Malaysia, the plan is to go beyond and further to neighbouring countries.

Infringement of a Trademark Trademark infringement is an unauthorized use of a trademark or service mark on or in connection with goods and/or services in a manner that is likely to cause confusion, deception, or mistake about the source of the goods and/or services. When infringement occurs, trademark infringement proceedings may be brought against the infringing user of the same or similar mark to prevent further use of the mark and claim damages for the wrongful use. The success of an infringement normally turns on whether the party who uses the trade mark and/or similar mark causes a likelihood of confusion and so weakens the value of the trademark owner’s mark. It is not necessary for a mark to be identical to one already in use to infringe upon the owner’s rights. If the proposed mark is similar enough to the earlier mark to risk confusing the average consumer, its use may constitute infringement if the services or goods on which the two marks are used are related to each other. RIGHTS OF A TRADEMARK HOLDER An action for registered trade mark infringement is taken against the party who uses the trade mark and/or a confusingly and deceptively similar trade mark in Malaysia in relation to goods covered by the registration. By this definition, registered trade mark infringement actions are usually commenced against manufacturers and importers of infringing products or any party who “uses” the offending trade mark within the definition of “use” prescribed by the Trademarks Act 2019.

confusingly similar to that registered trade mark in relation to goods covered by the registration. Unless the third party’s trade mark is identical to the registered trade mark, there is the need to show confusion and deception which is determined by comparing and viewing the marks in totality and taking into account factors including: The idea conveyed by the marks. The effect of the marks. The principle of “imperfect recollection”. The essential features of the marks. Protection can extend to cover translations or to conceptually identical but graphically different trademarks if these are found to cause confusion. The trademark can also be enforced against domain names, trade names, pseudonyms so long as such use is trade mark use and results in confusion and deception. REGISTRATION INEVITABLE

Registration guarantees that you have a sole and exclusive ownership over the trademark. However, you can still take an action against any party who uses your unregistered trademark under the common law tort of passing off. To succeed in an action for passing off, the following must be proved to the court:

The general rule is that an action for trade mark infringement must be commenced by the registered owner of the trade mark. Apart from the owner of a trade mark, a registered user of the trade mark, subject to any agreement between the registered user and the registered owner, can bring an action for trade mark infringement in its own name where the registered proprietor. However, any licensee of a trade mark must be a registered user before it has the rights to commence an action for infringement as outlined above. The position of a non-exclusive licensee is similar to that of an exclusive licensee.

Registered trade mark infringement occurs if a party other than the registered proprietor or registered user of a trade mark uses in the course of trade a trade mark which is identical to or

ISOBAHTOS: RGB our personal goals, but we keep on moving forward despite the hurdles and obstacles that we face. According to Isobahtos, In every endeavour of becoming successful no matter what the circumstances are, there will always be someone behind every attempt acting as a catalyst towards chasing that goal, making them more encouraged to stand firm with success. Whatever may come, the drive to still achieve that success will always exist with the thought of the said catalyst, despite losing them at the end of the day. Thus, Isobahtos is always aiming to produce experimental hip hop music incorporating cultural sounds and experimenting with different music genres. And with this creative process, Isobahtos hopes to make an impact in the industry with their own unique sound. @ISOBAHTOS

ew and upcoming experimental Hip-Hop group from Sabah, Isobahtos or also known as IsoB, is here today because of their vision to carry dignity, and to represent elements of cultural arts, and traditional heritage of Borneo. The members of Isobahtos are: A.D, D&G, GHIDD, IAN J., IBHERRRR, RAMZIALI, QUENNER M., RODB, RYT, and YERAC. Consisting of 10 sabahan members passionate about music and ready to reach beyond the stars, the name Isobahtos, came from the word ‘no’ in Kadazan Dusun - “AISO” and the word ‘batas’ which means - “LIMIT”. Hence the name ISOBAHTOS in literal sense means No Limit. To make their mark in the music industry, on August 30th 2021, IsoB debuted with their first ever single, ‘TIADA BATAS’ (No Limit), followed by their song PANGKIS in January 2022 which showcased their versatile and unique sound, along with elements of Sabahan culture in their songs and music videos. And now IsoB is back with a new song called RGB (ARJIIBII), which is available to stream on various digital platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, JOOX, Deezer, KKBOX, and TikTok. Different from their previous songs, RGB (ARJIIBII) has an emotional sound to it and the lyrics are meaningful and relatable to almost all of us. The reason behind the name of the song RGB (ARJIIBII) is that as colours indicate one’s perception of the world, RGB (ARJIIBII) stands for the primary colours, Red Green and Blue, the colours of light which paint our daily lives. Although we see millions of colours through our eyes, each of us live in our own different worlds. The song RGB (ARJIIBII) tells about how the difference of colours reflect the differences in

orn and raised from the 2nd capital of Egypt, Alexandria, and settling down in Kota Kinabalu, Ahmed Yousry and his family of 6 have been enjoying every bit of their journey ever since they moved to Sabah. Their move was surprisingly not challenging as there are many similarities between Alexandria and Sabah.

However, when he is not working on 10 ‘N Go, sharing the love of travelling with his family, he often takes the time and brings his family travelling around to visit the gems of Sabah. On their last adventure, they went to Kundasang and Ranau, and visited Kinabalu Park, Desa Dairy Farm, Sabah Tea Resort and really enjoyed their time with nature at Langanan Waterfalls.

Having been to Kota Kinabalu a few times for his business trips before this, according to Ahmed, Kota Kinabalu feels like home as it reminds him of the beaches, the weather and the people in Egypt.

On normal days, he enjoys taking his Harley out for a ride, whether it is to go to work, or just to enjoy the breeze of the wind on his face. Sometimes, he would also bring his eldest son, who is currently 17 years old, along on these bike rides.

As he has lived in Kuwait and Kuala Lumpur before bringing his family to move to Kota Kinabalu, the special thing about living in Kota Kinabalu is the perfect combination of nature and the pace of the city. He is in love with Sabah as it is less fast paced compared to the hustles and bustles of Kuala Lumpur and the fact that Sabah has so many tourist areas to explore.

Apart from that, Ahmed also enjoys scuba diving with his family. He has his own gears and equipment and likes to bring his family along for diving trips. He likes posting photos and vlogs of his adventures in Sabah, and promotes Sabah’s tourism to the people in the Middle East just for the love of it. He recalled visiting Semporna with his family some time ago, and some people on his Facebook asked, “Wow, is this Maldives?”, and he proudly replied, “No, this is Sabah!”. He hopes to spread the beauty of Sabah to as many people as he could, including his friends and family back home in Egypt.

As the founder and CEO of 10 ‘N Go, Ahmed views this business venture as a passion of his. He is very passionate about the quality of food and service they serve to their customers. He wants to bring the taste and experience of real authentic Egyptian food to all, especially to the people of Sabah who have shown him and his family a heartwarming hospitality. “If you see a restaurant and the owner goes to the restaurant and eats their own food on a daily basis, it means the food quality is really good, delicious, and reliable.” - Ahmed Yousry, CEO and founder of 10 ‘N Go.

And that’s Ahmed Yousry for you, a traveller, an aspiring businessman, a passionate foodie, and a family man.

Shaymaa Arafah

Co-FoUNDER & head chef at 10 ‘N GO

haymaa Arafah, is a mother of 4, is also the head chef at 10 ‘N Go. Hailing from Alexandria, Egypt, Shaymaa is very well-versed in cooking Egyptian cuisine. With the support of her husband and children, she is able to juggle her tasks as a mother, and the head chef at 10 ‘N Go on a daily basis.

living in Kota Kinabalu for Shaymaa is that the beaches here are very accessible and are just a short drive away. Shaymaa enjoys travelling and visiting hidden gems of Sabah with her family, and is grateful that her husband Ahmed shares the same love for travelling as her.

Shaymaa is an early riser. Every day, she will go to the kitchen of the restaurant at 6 AM in the morning after Fajr, and start to prepare to cook for the Lunch menu, together with the help of the helpers at 10 ‘N Go.

Having to move from Alexandria to Kuwait to Kuala Lumpur and now to Kota Kinabalu, has been easy thanks to the people that they have met throughout their journey. Although it can be challenging for her at times due to the language barrier, the similarities of the environment in Sabah, which includes the beaches, the weather as well as the hospitality, makes her feel right at home. If possible, she would want to live in Sabah all her life.

As the head chef, Shaymaa has to be in the kitchen from 6 AM to 12 PM for lunch preparation, and 4 PM to 10 PM for dinner preparations. Although her daily routine revolves around the restaurant, she would always take the time to be with her children in between her shifts. Before leaving to work, she would always ask for blessings from Allah to look after her children and to keep them safe. Working two shifts at the restaurant, she feels grateful to have very understanding children and is especially thankful to her older sons who take care of the younger ones while she is at work. And as a loving mother, whenever she cooks food for 10 ‘N Go, she would always bring some for her children as well. Thus, Shaymaa takes pride in the quality and the genuinity of an authentic home-cooked style Egyptian food at 10 ‘N Go. During her off-days, Shaymaa enjoys visiting the beach, or just spending time with her family. One of the best parts of 28

Despite that, she does miss her family back in Egypt. Due to the pandemic, they have not been able to pay their friends and family back home for a visit, as she is worried about her young children. However, once she believes that all is clear and safe, they plan to travel and visit home again, but for now, they are happy to be settling down in Sabah, excited for her children who will be enrolled in school soon, and Shaymaa is very thankful to have 10 ‘N Go that keeps her connected to her Egyptian roots.

TECH

Is the Graphics War Heating up?

T

he graphics processing unit (GPU) or what we commonly refer as graphics cards, is a part of a computer that handles the graphics you see on your screen. Be it the texts you’re typing, videos you watch, or games you play, the GPU handles them all. Of course, the power needed for each task would be different, but gaming has been pushing the limits of GPU tech and power for the past decade or so. The two major players in the GPU market, AMD and Nvidia, have been battling it out with every iteration of their latest and greatest, with Nvidia having a slight lead for a while. However, would the introduction of a new player shake things up? Intel is about to join the GPU war with their Arc Alchemist line of GPUs rumoured to come this summer. They’ll be putting out a few cards to satisfy every gamer in the market. The top of the line A770M and A730M will have 16GB and 12GB VRAM respectively, with the A770M powered up to 150W and clocks at 1650MHz. At the mid-range, the A550M will come with 8GB of VRAM clocked at 1600MHz. For you budget gamers out there, Intel has got you covered with the A350M and A370M, both with 4GB of VRAM. These GPUs will compete with current favourites the RTX line-up from Nvidia, and underdogs RX line-up from AMD. Although, leaks have shown Intel’s GPUs are slightly slower when compared to Nvidia’s RTX, especially when the A770M is closer to the RTX 3070, the weaker option in the RTX flagship

GPU offerings. This brings into question how Intel will fair by introducing their first dedicated GPUs. Well, they are one of the biggest CPU producers and have experience in making integrated GPUs for their CPU line-ups. So, it’s safe to say they have some idea of what they’re doing. Intel coming into the GPU market is certainly exciting with only one, or arguably two, companies dominating the market for years. It shakes up the market at an almost perfect time. The GPU shortage caused by Covid has caused price hikes on the limited options of GPUs, new and old. With Intel coming into the picture, there’ll be more options to choose from by everyone on the look out for GPUs, potentially lowering the current prices we see. Plus, more competition will also mean a need for companies to further better their products faster in order to compete with each other. Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing how Intel will fare. They don’t need to make a huge impact on their first try, but just enough to keep both AMD and Nvidia on their toes. It’ll definitely benefit consumers in the long run. Let’s just hope there won’t be any shortages to look forward to.

tand up, paddle, falling and getting back up are the basic things you need to get you started on stand up paddle boarding. The rapidly growing water sport, Stand Up paddle (SUP) boarding is derived from surfing with a modern twist and offers a fun and interesting way to play on water. SUP boarding is less complicated, less demanding and easier compared to regular surfing, as it uses a long-shaped paddle that helps propulsion and makes it easy for the rider to steer and control. Although SUP boards tend to be larger and more stable compared to long surfing boards, SUP boarding still requires some balance for one to ride the board standing up. It is a water sport activity that uses a mixture of balance, strength and endurance to ride. Wondering where to experience Stand Up paddle boarding in Kota Kinabalu? Check out Waterfly Borneo at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru! Besides SUP boarding, they also offer a number of watersports activities such as E-foiling, kiteboarding, water cruises and more. THINK OUTSIDE THE TRASH WITH HAPPY PLASTIC BORNEO & UPCYCLED SHACK

I

n this anthropocene era, our planet is choking with plastic. It’s almost as if plastic is ubiquitous to our entire existence. All over the world, trillions of plastic bottles and plastic bags are purchased and thrown every year, especially single-use plastics. These plastics accumulate as waste in the environment and cause harm to our planet as well as the animals. Plastic waste leads to marine litter, wildlife traps, and waste accumulation. So how do we reduce plastic pollution? Firstly, reducing our consumption or usage of plastic is an obvious step, especially on single-use plastics. However, Happy Plastic Borneo together with Upcycled Shack is doing more than just reducing the use of plastics, as they have set up a mobile recycling centre located at Dewanraya Kepayan, Jalan Kibouvang, Kota Kinabalu, where they turn trash into products! In an effort to tackle the issue of plastic pollution that is currently happening worldwide, Happy Plastic Borneo has created a plastic currency system where they encourage people to drop off their single-use plastic bottles for upcycling and get rewarded with credit or exchange for food items. Currently, Happy Plastic Borneo is accepting bottles of HDPE 02 and LDPE 04 for RM0.30 per kg. To enjoy their reward point system, simply: Collect and identify plastic bottles with the right recycling codes. Clear all contents of the bottle, clean & air-dry the plastic bottles. Remove all labels. Send cleaned plastic bottles for recycling at Happy Plastic Borneo’s Mobile Recycling Centre. As education and sustainability is essential in the journey of fostering change, Happy Plastic Borneo also welcomes stateless children to visit the mobile recycling centre. According to one of the founders of Happy Plastic Borneo - Zazila Roslan, she 34

sometimes unintentionally becomes a teacher and would teach the children how to count, how to add and subtract, as well as the importance of keeping the environment clean. Sometimes the children would sing happily while helping out with cleaning and arranging the plastics. Furthermore, to take climate action awareness up a notch, Happy Plastic Borneo also encourages volunteers to come and learn about upcycling wastes into beautiful products. They have machines that could shred the plastics, which will be divided based on its colours, and will be heated up and moulded into the desired shapes. Among the products they have made just from plastic are coasters, chairs, clocks, lamp shades, accessories, and more. LISS vs HIIT

ne of the most popular debates in health and fitness at the moment surrounds cardiovascular exercise. Should we be doing more shorter high intensity sessions, like spin classes or HIIT classes? Or should we stick to long walks, jogs, or bicycle rides? Spoiler alert: The answer is we should stop thinking about these exclusively, because we get benefits from both. Let’s take a deeper look into it anyway! Let’s start with the understanding the differences. HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) cardio, as the name suggests, consists of repeatedly making short, high effort bursts with short periods of recovery in between. For example, you would alternate between sprinting for 30 seconds then walking at a slower pace for 15 seconds. The goal is to do this for multiple intervals, getting close to your maximum heart rate. LISS (Low Intensity Steady State) cardio on the other hand, is a long duration, constant effort at 50%-70% of your maximum heart rate. Proponents of HIIT love that it takes less time to burn the same amount of calories due to higher exertions during a shorter period. The higher your average heart rate, the more calories you burn. Additionally, due to the nature of HIIT workouts being so high effort, researchers suggest that you burn additional calories when recovering caused by EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption), AKA the after-burn effect. Although LISS burns less calories per minute relative to HIIT thus taking longer to do, it is also far less intensive and strenuous on your CNS (Central Nervous System), making

by Joshua Tsen Image | Unsplash

40 36

LISS sessions easier to recover from. This means that HIIT workouts have a greater potential of affecting your performance in the gym than LISS does, making it counter-effective in making overall progress if you are targeting increases in strength. Recent studies have also shown that calories burnt from afterburn are not nearly as substantial as the they are typically made it out to be, almost insignificant when compared to LISS. This is because oxygen consumption during LISS is higher than HIIT, resulting in similar consumption over a 24-hour period. Beyond considering calories burnt, both forms of cardio exercises also bring huge benefits to heart health, hormone balance as well as diet and sleep regulation. That said, we should be aiming for LISS to make up a bulk of our exercise division, especially for those just starting regular exercise for the first time or after a long break, in order to promote vascular health with 1 or 2 HIIT sessions in a week after a good foundation has been established. When it comes to the debate between HIIT and LISS, the best thing you can do is not limit yourself to either! Think of them as different tools, with some goals being achievable with saw, a while some goals require a hammer, and major goals most probably requiring a combination of both! An effective coach will help you find this balance while helping to achieve lasting results. Get in touch with us if you think we could help you learn more! The Benefits of Fasting

he Holy Month of Ramadan is the month of where muslim friends undergo fasting, this year falls a similar timeline with Christian friends who are also going through similar Lent season. But did you know that fasting aside from food; it involves various self-reflection and spiritual purification? There’s so much to it during fasting that benefits in terms of wellness to oneself; occasionally it is still recommended to fast on a quarterly basis; for health benefits or a good time for self reflection thus far. Especially if you are going for a diet challenge; here are some different types of fasting that will benefit your health; INTERMITTENT FASTING The most basic type of fasting, also the most achievable and common to most people. It is simply going through the day on a limited timeframe to eat typically the 8 hour only eating interval. Although it may sound intimidating, due to proper time limitations, it controls the intake of food. It doesn’t matter if you are a morning person or a night owl; as long as the clock cycle to eat is within the 8 hours time frame of the day - Then pick a day, eat dinner early, and fast for the designated time. Of course with controlled portions on each meal; intermittent fasting is the least strict which on a personal level, I would recommend to go for. Truly, because we cannot live without food we enjoy and food eaten should be enjoyed as you live. So

by Geraldine Yong Image | Unsplash 38 42

don’t worry about the chocolate cake; or that pizza and your favourite ricebowl; however, eat with control. MACRO NUTRIENT RESTRICTION FASTING This type of fast involves restricting a certain macronutrient (The three macronutrients are proteins, carbohydrates, and fats). Somewhat hangs similarity to the modern Keto Diet; typically these fasts are protein deloads. Usually practiced by athletes who require higher protein intake, while other macro-nutrient aside protein, like high-quality fats, carbohydrates, and vegetables is taken only 2-3 day in a month. However, this fasting is usually for athletes with strict body maintenance reasons and is usually not recommended unless there is good discipline and willpower on the individual. But we can surely guarantee a lovely body that pays off - maintaining it long term will test your determination. Fasting requires self perseverance and willpower not only restricted to eating patterns, it also to not be tempted with material goods but to also restrain from bad habits and intentions. Although fasting may seem like just holding out from eating and drinking during Ramadan, however it is not the core purpose of fasting is of spiritual cleanse; think of it as a spiritual and overall detox as well! So have a go! And go for a fast to experience the health and spiritual benefits of your own.

What is EmSlimSculpt?

E

mslimsculpt is a revolutionary non-invasive procedure that targets fat and strengthens muscle together. Emslimsculpt is an FDA-approved body contouring treatment that simultaneously burns fat and builds muscle for the abdomen. It is also the only FDA-approved non-surgical butt lift. Emslimsculpt uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) to trigger supramaximal contractions (the type that cannot be achieved by voluntary muscle action). Each 30 minutes is equivalent to 20,000 contractions. Because Emslimsculpt strengthens core muscles, hence, it could strengthen the individual’s back muscles and pelvic muscles. The strengthening of these muscles can help reduce the risk of lower back pain, poor posture, & overall body fatigue. In some women, Emslimsculpt has also shown to improve diastasis recti, a condition of abdominal muscle weakening and separation from pregnancy. Emslimsculpt is a comfortable procedure. You may feel some sensation similar to an intense abdominal or gluteal workout. Some individuals may experience mild and temporary muscle soreness the next day. It requires basically zero down time. Dental

Oral Hygiene during Fasting Period

S

ome patients think that actions that take place during dental procedures will nullify their fast but local anaesthetics (injections) are permissible forms of treatments for those who are observing Ramadan. However, when patients are reluctant, it is best to re-schedule or delay treatments especially if there is no acute pain/discomfort.

although some scholars of Islam consider the use of toothpaste to be highly undesirable because deliberate or accidental swallowing of them will nullify the fast.

If you’re wondering if dental treatments and preventative procedures invalidate the fast, the answer is no. In that case, does extraction break the fast? Since an extraction may be performed to prevent infection from spreading, it comes under the purview of a preventable treatment, and therefore, is permissible.

If your question is, does getting a filling break your fast, the answer will depend on some factors. All dental work including fillings, tooth extraction, root canal or any other procedure should not break your fast as long as you do not swallow water. If you feel it will be difficult to avoid swallowing water and the procedure is urgent, the fast can be broken and made up after Ramadan based on medical grounds. Otherwise, it would be best to schedule the appointment after Ramadan. For the ones who are fasting, Dr. Sylvia from Phi Dental advises to always brush and floss thoroughly before sleeping at night and I recommend brushing after Suhoor (pre-dawn meal). Brushing twice daily is sufficient for oral disease prevention. Toothpaste while fasting is allowed during the holy month of Ramadan,

Here are some tips on how to maintain good oral hygiene throughout your fasting period.

• • •

Practice excellent oral hygiene to efficiently eliminate plaque. Incorporate the use of miswak (the chewing stick) in your routine. Have plenty of fluids during the non-fasting hours: approx. 2-3 glasses of water at iftar to freshen your mouth, and multiply consumption of soups, juices and fresh fruits such as watermelon, musk melon and strawberries to remain hydrated. Rinse your mouth with water during fasting hours, taking care not to swallow it. Cut down on caffeine (coffee, tea and sodas further dehydrate your body) and smoking. Medications like antihistamines and antihypertensives also cause bad breath. Patients receiving medications for treating systemic diseases should speak to their GP before commencing Ramadan to ensure their fasts will not affect the efficacy and use of their medications. Denture wearers should clean their dentures on a daily basis. Improper fit leads to food lodgement and subsequent bad breath. Wash them regularly and allow them to be moist while seating the dentures in the mouth to keep your gums hydrated and reduce ulceration.

We always go all out and eat to our hearts content when it comes to feasting in a buffet, that’s because aside from the variety of options available as we are indecisive people, we need to eat the money worth but with that said, we shouldn’t be over eating as per say. The mindset will still insist on overeating and leading to a habit of eating until your money’s worth regardless of whether you are in a buffet or not, because with the materialistic reality we live in; everything needs to be the consumer's money's worth. This later will snowball into health issues like obesity, diabetes and which could be much more alarming than worrying about the value of the food.

uffets are the best for every foodie! The spreads are always of variety and there is always something for everyone. Whether we are a picky eater or a small eater; there will still be something that fits the plate. Want to know what’s the best part of a buffet for a customer? A buffet spread helps customers sample the outlet's food in generally small portions before becoming a long term returning customer, don’t you think so? A Buffet’s main definition is a meal consisting of several dishes from which guests serve themselves. With covid just ended; there is no doubt that buffets all around are enjoying a great crowd considering it is also part of social gatherings which we were limited to during lockdown periods. Gathering during a buffet allows friends and family to gather and interact, catching up with everyone without worrying what food is suitable to serve and on preparations, which is a lighter note on responsibility for private gatherings like potlucks.

With that said, sometimes with various selections on a buffet spread, issues like food wastage is no doubt a potential risk factor. Where does all the food left uneaten go? For obvious reasons they will not be able to serve it again for the next day, will it all go down the bin? Even with controlled food preparations, there will be food wastage; Let’s just hope the underprivileged are fed in some form. Aside from that, there are also thoughts on quality control and consistency of the food with these considerations to it as the price for the meal is also not cheap given current economic conditions for consumers. Hence to fully satisfied both parties and avoid wastages will be a major challenge. All in all, it is to eat with portion and balance. Although it is not every day we, as consumers go for buffets, but even on a special day, we should eat in moderate; and enjoy the meal naturally.

With foods ranging from appetizers, salads, drinks, mains, local favorites and all the way to desserts, there is no doubt

APRIL FOOL’S DAY

f there is one thing popular about the month of April, it is April Fool's Day. Held annually on the 1st day of April itself, it is a day where people would play practical and harmless jokes/pranks to fool others. After a joke is accomplished, the jokester will shout "April Fools!" Most people would have experienced this by now at least once in a lifetime. There are a few debates on the origin of April Fool's Day. One of them goes way, way back to 1392, in Geoffrey Chaucer's The

Pop Culture

Canterbury Tales. In the "Nun's Priest's Tale", a vain cock Chauntecleer is tricked by a fox on "Since March began thirty days and two", i.e. 32 days since March began, which is supposedly 1 April. In 1686, English philosopher and writer John Aubrey referred to the celebration as "Fooles holy day", the first British reference. April Fool's Day is customary to be performed in different countries in their own unique way. For example, most news media outlets in Nordic countries will publish exactly one false story on 1 April. In Ireland, it was traditional to pass on to a victim an "important letter" to be given to a named person. That person would read the letter (which actually reads "send the fool further"). Thus, that person would then ask the victim to take it to someone else, and so on. April Fool's Day has also been mentioned or performed in books, films, television, and other forms of media platforms. Australia's best-selling author Bryce Courtenay wrote a novel called April Fool's Day. 1990's American sitcom Roseanne featured an episode titled "April Fools' Day". On April Fools' Day 1980, the BBC announced Big Ben's clock face was going digital and whoever got in touch first could win the clock hands. Did you get fooled on April Fool's Day? Love it or hate it, expect more jokes/pranks to keep happening on such a day.

ituated at Api-Api Centre is a humble stall called JI’ Drink And Food that serves Indonesian delicacies. It is famous for their Coto Makassar (Indonesian traditional soup), Nasi Kuning (yellow rice) and Ayam Geprek (fried chicken) dishes. Their dishes really pack a punch as we had a chance to try out their Nasi Kuning Tuna and two Ayam Geprek dishes that are served with their yummy red sambal and green sambal each. We also tried their regular Chicken Soto which is pretty good. But we were simply blown away by their Chicken Skin & Beef Coto Makassar. A delicious mouthwatering masterpiece. Their drinks are not bad too. Popular orders includes Blue Lemon Soda, Green Tea and Cendol Jagung & Kacang Merah. JI’ Drink and Food opened only last year and is operated by Indonesian owners who are from Lahad Datu. They were already in the f&b business for years before moving to Kota Kinabalu last year. All their dishes are from homemade recipes and most of them cost only under RM10 to order. Grd Floor, Block 4, Api-Api Centre, Kota Kinabalu

restaurant review

The Rooftop Bar & Grill at Hilton Kota Kinabalu makes a welcome return with a bang, and we are ever so grateful. As its name suggests, it is a poolside bar and specialty restaurant that offers fresh local seafood, imported meat, international wines, and handcrafted cocktails. If all that sounds like your thing, let’s dive right in. We were first treated to one of their house wines, a Luis Felipe Edwards Cabernet Sauvignon 2020. It has fruity and smoky notes, and is a great all-round table wine making it excellent for dinner parties. For starters, we were treated to their best-selling dish at the moment, the Scallop Thermidor. Best eaten hot, the half-shell scallops are topped with melted mozzarella cheese, mushroom, mustard cream, and ebiko. We also had their homemade Focaccia bread - an Italian flatbread that is soft and fluffy, served with butter, olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing, and their homemade garlic confit. Our final starter for the day was the Grilled Octopus, served with gazpacho salsa, feta cheese, radish, chilli pineapple and basil oil. Needless to say, by this point we have already built up such an appetite and were hungry for whatever’s next to come. Now, on to the soup. First up is another crowd favourite, the Jerusalem Artichoke Soup. This creamy, hearty soup is best eaten hot as it really brings out the flavour of the imported artichoke chips. It is pureed together with Macadamia nuts and a splash of green oil. We also had the Peking Duck Consomme which came with its own little presentation, courtesy of the restaurant manager himself, Tejah Abel. The hot broth was poured over the enoki mushrooms that were nestled between

the duck pieces, which then “opened up” akin to a flower blossoming - make of that what you will. Next up - the mains. We tried two dishes, the Maple Glazed Duck Breast and the Australian Black Angus Striploin. The maple glazed duck was served and plated so elegantly, if you haven’t taken any pictures of the food yet at this point, now is the time to do so. As eye pleasing as it was, the duck was well cooked, with delicious sweet potato croquette, vegetables, dark cherry and port wine sauce. Finally, on to the black angus striploin straight from Australia. Tender, juicy and cooked to perfection with some grilled vegetables and gourmet salt on the side. We were served the red wine sauce, but there are plenty of other sauces for you to choose from, as well as other cuts of beef.

To end our evening, we had an assortment of Grilled Fruits, fudgy and chocolatey Double Chocolate Brownies with strawberry yoghurt ice cream and marshmallows, and the absolute show-stopper, Vanilla Crème Brûlée, that had us licking our spoons (and plate) clean! All in all, we had an enjoyable and memorable evening. All the food we had were great, but some stood out more than others. Besides the obvious Crème Brûlée, the Scallop Thermidor, Jerusalem Artichoke Soup and the Black Angus Striploin were all strong contenders for dish of the evening. The Rooftop Bar & Grill only just reopened in February this year, and they are already planning to introduce more dishes, seasonal menus and sets for couples.

Black Angus Striploin

The Rooftop is described to be “designed as a key social hub for hotel guests and local residents”. With a clean and pleasant atmosphere, this restaurant is great for meetings and socialising. And if you do choose to dine here, hopefully you’ll get the chance to speak to the Chef de cuisine, Elvin John. He has such a keen eye for detail and a strong passion for his craft, so be sure to ask for the chef’s recommendations. If you’re looking to end your evening with an excellent dining experience, quality food, great wine, and stunning city views, The Rooftop welcomes you with open arms and a warm smile.
