The current pandemic has forced modern human beings into an ever-isolated state than we’ve ever been in the near decades due to lockdowns that were enforced in various parts of the world. This brings the world and me included to reflect on the ultimate meaning of freedom. What does freedom mean to us living in this modern world? As such, in this project, I explored freedom through different representations of our modern world.

Beware of Third Party Agents – Don’t’ Be Duped!

A

s an agency of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) providing financial education, financial advisory and debt management services, Agensi Kaunseling dan Pengurusan Kredit (AKPK) has never appointed third party agents or charged a fee for its services. All individuals can come directly to AKPK for its financial advisory and debt management services ‘free of charge’. Should anyone be approached by individuals claiming to be an agent of AKPK and offering his or her service for a fee, we would like to alert the general public that it is a fake agent who has no authority to act on behalf of AKPK. This is a SCAM. AKPK has never appointed any agents or third parties to represent it. Our services are FREE for all individuals. The modus operandi of these agents is usually to make a phone call or send an SMS to the potential customer to offer their service. To illustrate how the fake third party agents work, two real cases are cited here:

Report

As mentioned earlier, a third party agent is just one of the numerous scams faced by Malaysians. During the COVID-19 pandemic, several types of financial scams have been reported while existing scams are still on-going. The most active among the scams are the Macau Scam, False Transaction Authorisation Code (TAC), Personal Loans Scam, Online purchase of face masks and the most recent scam involves false websites or applications using the name of Bank Negara Malaysia. Almost all the scams involve the voluntary disclosure of information pertaining to personal bank account details by the victim to a third party. Examples of such information are account number, log in ID and password, TAC number, and in some cases the credit card PIN numbers are also given to scam syndicates. Here are some tips which can help individuals avoid being cheated in financial scams:

CASE #1 A lady had obtained a loan worth RM200,000 from a credit provider but not long after that she started having financial problems and began defaulting on her repayments. Conveniently, a ‘consultant’ who claimed to be from AKPK called, and offered to assist her to settle her debt for a fee of 10% of her loan value. Fortunately for her, a relative mentioned about AKPK’s free services just in time, and after making her own enquiries with AKPK, she quickly enrolled into AKPK’s Debt Management Programme and saved herself from losing RM20,000.

CASE #2 A customer received an SMS advising him to take a personal loan to fully settle his outstanding credit card balances. After he had obtained the personal loan and settled his credit card balances, he applied for a higher credit limit from the bank with the help of the ‘agent’ who assisted him to write a letter of application. When his application was approved he maximised his credit limit through cash-on-call and used up all his credit cards. The ‘agent’ then helped him to apply to AKPK to enrol in the Debt Management Program (DMP) telling him that this is a special loan from Bank Negara Malaysia. The unfortunate customer, or victim rather, had paid almost RM20,000 to the agent in fees for his service.

AKPK is a one-stop centre that provides a holistic solution in assisting repayments of individuals and SMEs to banks. It is advisable to keep in touch directly with AKPK or financial institutions to obtain financial services or advisory. Find out more at: services.akpk.org.my @AKPKofficial 09

Legends of Ancient Borneo

W

e may hear ancient tales told by our grandparents that were told by their parents and we might tell these stories to our future children. That is how the circle continues. Some youngsters might think that these stories are unsound, but in a bigger picture there are lessons to be learned in each of these ancient stories. As locals, we should appreciate our ancestors' tales as these stories are part of our cultural identity. If we see these stories as insignificant, well there goes our native values and these unique stories will be at risk of disappearance. Luckily, with modern computer animation it will attract younger audiences and foreign eyes too. By this way, it somehow gave a reassurance that our ancient tales will not be forgotten by time and that’s exactly what has been delivered by All-For-One Productions with their authentic animation. In 2019, Legend of Ancient Borneo was produced by All-ForOne Production Sdn. Bhd., a Sabahan visual production house. It is a chronicle during ancient times in Borneo where the land was dry and lifeless, surrounded by darkness from a curse that had fallen upon them. Most of the villages were destroyed and abandoned except for one village that was protected by an ancient dragon skull that was passed down to them for generations. The villagers believed that the skull was sacred and it provided peace and prosperity to the village. The dragon skull gave superpowers to each of the four warriors of the village. The superpowers that were given to them are powerful strength, the ability to create

10

and control fire by hand, the ability to cast mighty wind, and supernatural speed. These lionhearted warriors are assigned to protect their village from an evil gang of reptile savages that are trying to steal the sacred dragon skull from their village. Little did they know, there lays an untold history of the dragon skull. The mind behind this enchanting story is Kwan Thung Seng and Robertson Sondoh Jr. Legend of Ancient Borneo was originally based on a fictional comic book and director Geoffrey Sinn saw potential in it and further developed it into animation. In the production, Geoffrey recruited local artists that are prominently

Since Legend of Ancient Borneo was shown in international film festivals, the folktale of Sabah has been shared to various audiences from Asian countries such as India and to the Western audience such as Italy, United States, Greece, and others. Legend of Ancient Borneo has come a long way and knowing that this team competed with countries that are dominating in the animation industry like Japan and South Korea proved that our local talent are internationally worthy. Legend of Ancient Borneo is currently in development as a TV series and it will be streamed on online platforms and Tv channels. Hopefully this will pave the way for more animations of our local folktales to be shared with future generations in order to preserve our culture and heritage and further expose the talents of our local animators.

Sabahan, some of them are Rizo Leong who is well known with his wood craft that has spread over France and Japan. Boni Miosis who is the lead actor in another popular local movie called ‘Huminodun’ was assigned to be the main narrator of this short animation. A whole creative team was born in order for the animation to succeed and 90% of the whole team are talented Sabahans. Interesting fact is, Legend of Borneo is the first animated film in the KadazanDusun language. Geoffrey chose KadazanDusun as the language for the animation because he intended to give a tribute to the native’s culture. During the process of animating Legend of Ancient Borneo, the team could not escape from hurdles when completing it. They faced the challenge of financial instability, lack of equipment and so on. But just like the four warriors, the team never gave up and in September 2018, their hard work paid off when they became one of the winners of the Intellectual Property Creator Challenge (IPCC), which was organized by Malaysia Digital economy corporation(MDEC). Competing among 84 companies in Malaysia, they won and received a grant of RM100,000 from MDEC. With the winnings, they were required to complete the production in just 12 months. When the animation was completed and submitted to 21st Digicon6 Asia, the film had gained greater recognition and even secured the Silver Winner of Malaysia Round. This was a first from over 30 accomplishments that they have so far achieved. Some of the awards that they received are, Best Short Animated Film in Great Message International Film Festival India, Best Digital Animated Film in Malaysia Digital Film Awards 2019. The film also qualified as finalists in Rome Independant Prisma Award in Italy and New York Animation Film Awards (NYAFA) in NY USA, and the list just goes on.

MUSIC

from a melancholic story of a mother’s bond with her children that was broken because of a divorce. According to Fanzi, most of his songs are inspired from anyone or anything that he strongly feels connected with. Fanzi is a teacher with 8 years of experience, a singer that has a strong and controlled voice, and recently a growing influencer and content creator. Winning 3rd place for this year's Sabah Top Influencer And Content Creator contest (STIACC) was surreal for Fanzi because he never really saw himself as an Influencer, yet he was honoured of the acknowledgement from STIACC. He said the glamorous side doesn't matter to him but the realisation that he as an Influencer who could somehow create a positive impact in the life of others makes it worth it. Unquestionably, Fanzi Ruji is marking his name in the showbiz industry. You can listen to Fanzi on iTunes, Spotify and his YouTube Channel.

W

ho says that a teacher should only teach? Certainly not for Fanzi Ruji, who is not only an aspiring English teacher but also an uprising singer. A dedicated educator by the weekdays and a passionate singer on the off days. His name was cheered by many proud Sabahans when he won a TikTok singing challenge initiated by an American independent music artist, David Michael Frank. With a hit of 3 millions views, not only Fanzi not be collaborating with David on cover songs, but he has also brought the name of Sabah to international heights and the locals are ecstatic about it. Fanzi Ruji started his singing journey in 2009. His singing career bloomed drastically when he won the 2009 famous local singing competition called ‘Sugandoi’ that was significant for contestants to sing Kadazan, Dusun, Murut or Rungus songs. In his own words, winning the Sugandoi has opened a lot of doors of opportunity for him in showbiz. After winning the 2009 Sugandoi competition, Fanzi’s music career levitated to another level as he was offered to record his very first single entitled ‘Dua Cinta Menjadi Satu’ that was composed by a well known Malaysian composer, Asmin Mudin. So far, Fanzi has 15 singles both in Malay and KadazanDusun. Fanzi said that there will definitely be new music in the future but sadly not at the nearest time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Some of his latest singles are ‘Ika Noh’ featuring famous Sabahan singer Marsha Milan. ‘Hati Nan Rapuh’ was released last year and the single is his first self-composed song and was inspired

The next frontier of air travel

T

he Wright brothers made history in 1903 when they successfully took flight and invented the flying machine. Then in 1952 the first jet airliner, the de Havilland Comet, was introduced to the world. Through the years, innovation played its part and we were introduced to the likes of the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, two titans of the commercial airline world. In the meantime, man has set foot on the moon and saw our big blue planet from a new perspective. So, what’s next? Well, I’m sure we’ve all heard of the recent achievement of Sir Richard Branson. The founder of the Virgin Group made headlines last month as he successfully completed a roundtrip through space. Virgin Galactic is the new venture for the British billionaire as he plans to launch a commercial airline centred on “space travel”. What’s cool about this flight is the aircraft they used and the methods of taking off. The aircraft looks like it came out of a retro-futuristic artwork. With a familiar jetliner look, the body of the aircraft seems like it was cut in half, with the back end being its main propulsion system, once it’s in the air. For now, the aircraft can only carry a handful of passengers, including the pilots. It needs to take off using two other separate aircrafts. When it reaches the peak altitude, the two other aircrafts will detach and the Virgin Galactic will fire its jet engines and climb into what is officially recognised as “space”. After the trip in space is done, it’ll then descend accordingly and glide back down to Earth. This method isn’t technically new, but for a commercial flight, it certainly is the first.

by Noel Jinguli Image | Virgin Galactic

14

Sir Richard Branson and his crew weren’t the only ones who accomplished this however, as a certain Mr. Jeff Bezos also completed a trip to space with his own rocket. Though, his take off was more of the traditional space rocket take off. At the end of the day, both these men have experienced what only few have experienced. Both of them aim to establish a new form of tourism - space tourism. Will this ever take off? (Pun intended) Well, that’s for the economy to decide, because for now, it seems only the rich and wealthy are able to afford this kind of luxury. That’s just part of the criticism these ventures have received as environmentalists also question whether this will do any good for the environment. Nevertheless, only time will tell whether any of the issues caused by these ventures can either be solved or worsened in the time to come.

Not just a tree issue

the sea. This development plan will surely be no different. Apart from that, some species that are local to said habitat will lose their homes like the magnificent hornbills. All the while, the littering will increase and the production of waste will increase and maybe, so will the illegal dumping. It’s bad enough nowadays, but just imagine if a lot more people and buildings are there 24/7. So, how do we go about this? Well, the most important first step is to create awareness on this matter. I understand if you don’t agree that awareness alone will be effective, and you’re right. But starting something meaningful needs a lot of support from everyone and awareness is how you create it. So, don’t hesitate to spread the word as every little bit of action will help with the bigger picture.

H

uman beings, we love to see progress around us and develop our environment to improve our lives. Sometimes we don't know when to stop and realize that our actions do more harm than good. Locally, this has happened a lot around us, and there’s one development plan that’s been on and off for years now which we wanted to highlight with our readers. I’m talking about the Tanjung Aru Eco Development (TAED) plan. The ever controversial site for the TAED has recently sparked some anger and confusion among Sabahans yet again. The trees that reside, or resided, on the beach have been cut down for certain “reasons”. Pictures have surfaced on social media that multiple trees have already been cut down and many more are marked or tagged to be cut down. As far as I’m aware of, there are no official statements as to why the trees were cut down. However, there has been word that the trees were infected with some kind of bacteria or fungus. It is curious though, as the trees from the pictures don’t look like they have been infected with anything. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, as I know my limits, I’m no expert. I am, in fact, a self-proclaimed “expert” when it comes to nostalgia. It’s one of the biggest reasons or arguments people make to oppose the TAED project. I’d argue that there’s a bigger issue when it comes to changing the ecosystem when this project is implemented. First off, the cool ocean breeze will be disrupted by the tall buildings that are planned to be erected at the site. This means Tanjung Aru will get warmer whether you’ll notice it or not. It’ll be worse as there won’t be any trees to absorb the carbon dioxide in our air. So, just be prepared. One other issue I foresee is sea reclamation. We’ve been doing this for so long that it still surprises me how much of the land in Kota Kinabalu used to be

"winningest" car?

T

he “winningest” car could mean many different things to many different people. The most wins in racing events? The most awards received? Could it mean the most popular car in a certain span of time? Certainly it could. This is a very subjective topic to talk about, but we can find some of the answers we’re looking for if we look closely. So, let’s take a look at some cars that have achieved success and became popular among consumers. Starting off with motorsports, the most wins a car has experienced in rally races is 51 wins. That car is the Lancia Delta, an unassuming hatchback that wasn’t very popular as a road car. The Delta S4 conquered and also effectively ended the infamous Group B era of rally. In Le Mans, there isn’t a single car that can be narrowed down for the most wins as manufacturers, or constructors would develop their machines to further dominate in the next year. So, with 19 wins, Porsche has dominated Le Mans since 1970. They also hold the record for most consecutive wins with 7 from 1981 to 1987. Selected by 82 journalists from 24 countries, the Car of the Year award recognises the best cars that have graced our roads through the years. In 2021, the Volkswagen ID.4 won World Car of the Year. The electric crossover from the German company is the second model in the ID. series. After the “dieselgate” scandal, Volkswagen vowed to focus on providing better emissions from their cars and produce environmentally friendly cars for the

world. Another fun fact is the relationship between the ID.4 and the ID.R, an all electric race focused car that conquered Pikes Peak in 2018. Let’s come back to home ground and talk about the most popular cars on our Malaysian streets. According to Paultan.org and Carsome, the most popular car in Malaysia in 2019 and 2020 is the Perodua Myvi. The plucky little hatchback makes up 25% of the cars sold in Carsome. You can see the appeal of the Myvi ever since it was introduced in 2005, with its affordable price, stylish design, and sub-compact size. With multiple facelifts and upgrades through the years, you can’t go 5 minutes without seeing one on the road. In 2019, it reached 1.1 million units sold, and that says a lot. There are a lot more cars and segments I’d love to talk about. It’s very exciting to research and discover the historic and popular cars that've been around us. Especially with the Myvi, who would’ve known it to be the car of choice among Malaysians, even if it has become a meme these days.

hampions. All of us have an image of a champion based on our own perspectives. The prowess and achievements of athletes, especially during the Olympic Games are what motivates everyone to be better, no matter what our goals are. We cheered for our national team in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, but not many of us know that we also have another national team who will be competing in the upcoming 2020 Paralympic Games. Happening on 24 August until 5 September 2021, it is also held in Tokyo and features athletes with disabilities from around the world. Here are three Sabahans who are part of our national team in the 2020 Summer Paralympic Games and who we think deserves a lot of attention and support from all of us.

Jonathan Wong Kar Gee Jonathan is a Kota Kinabalu native that has carved his name in the international athletics history books. He is a track and field athlete, specifically competing in long jump and triple jump events. When he’s not on the field training, Jonathan runs Wong Aquaculture Farm in Tuaran. At the age of eight, Jonathan was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, which means he has a vision impairment. However, this hasn’t deterred his will to succeed as he has competed and won medals in multiple Para sporting events in the last five years. He took home a silver medal in the Asian Para Games at Jakarta in 2018. Jonathan topped everyone when he won back-toback gold medals in the Handisport Open World Grand Prix Para Athletic Tournaments in 2018 and 2019, in Beijing and Paris respectively. His most recent silver medal was won in the World Para Athletics Championships at Dubai in 2019. For Jonathan, being a champ is to manage and press through challenging times and keeping a positive mentality. For him, the difference between competitors isn’t in skills, training, or talent, but more in the ability to stay positive and persevere through difficult times. “I hope I can encourage more Malaysians to compete in the international arena and thus improve the sports and rehabilitation quality in Malaysia. Also, I’ll continue training my best and hopefully compete in the Olympic Games one day”, said Jonathan when asked about his goals for the future. Jonathan is a person that likes to test himself to the limit and beyond. As long as he’s healthy, he’ll keep pushing forward. Even though he faces a lot of health issues regarding his impairment, he has still kept his promise to push on and slowly overcome said issues. That is why Jonathan is proud to qualify in international games. He enjoys his journey facing the obstacles along the way and training hard to get to where he is, as he truly cherishes this experience. Jonathan is thankful for the support he’s received from his family, friends, and colleagues. To everyone else, he advises us to quiet down the judgement and express our passion through our hearts. And to always enjoy whatever life brings to us.

Brenda Anellia Larry At just 15 years old, Brenda has competed among the world’s finest. The Kota Kinabalu native took up swimming in 2017. During her younger days, Brenda was quite afraid of water. However, with the support and encouragement from her family and teachers, she got the courage to take up swimming. She loved all kinds of sports, but there’s just something about Para swimming that made her master the sport. If you haven’t caught on yet, Brenda was born without both her arms. Yet, she found success in the water as she competed not only in the national level, but also internationally. She took on competitors in the 2018 Para National Games and also at the London 2019 World Para Swimming Allianz Championships. For Brenda, being a champion means to keep pushing and improving herself, despite any setbacks, in order to achieve her goals in life. Her biggest supporters are her family, friends, and her coach, Eva Wong. When asked about what was her main drive that keeps her motivated, Brenda said, “I want to make my coach and family proud of me. I also want to show people that my disability is not a disadvantage and that there is a place for people like me on the world stage.” Brenda believes that being born disabled does not mean someone should automatically be excluded from opportunities to achieve great dreams. In her own words, the opportunities are always there, as long as you have the guts and grits to chase after them. Brenda is currently training hard and is excited to represent Malaysia in the coming Paralympic Games. She has even already set her sights on the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Didin Taresoh Didin is a 46 year-old teacher from Kota Belud. Following an illustrious career on the court, Didin is proud to be representing Malaysia in the coming Paralympic Games, especially with badminton being added into the mix of sports for the first time. Ranked at seventh in the BWF World Para Badminton rankings, he has so much experience under his belt when he gets on the court in Tokyo. In Tokyo, Didin will be competing in the Short Stature Sports Class (SS 6). His name came to prominence in the world of badminton when he won the BWF Para Badminton Championship 2015 in England. These last few years, Didin never failed to stand on the podium, both at national and international levels. In 2016, he dominated the Para-Badminton Irish International in Dublin. He took home the gold for Malaysia in 2017 in the ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur. Recently, Didin won silver at the Third Dubai Para Badminton International 2021. Didin is also eyeing the ASEAN Para Games in Hanoi. Vietnam this coming December. To Didin, being a champion is to never give up, no matter what life throws at you. He is proud to be out there and proves that anyone can be a champion, you just need to put in the work to get there. Representing Malaysia in the Paralympic Games is a big accomplishment for Didin and it’s one that he’s been working hard to accomplish. With all the hard work paying off, he’s truly proud to get to where he is today. 19

personal Vaccine Guidelines 3. COMPLETING YOUR SECOND DOSE DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE FREE FROM HARM With loosened SOPs for those who’ve completed both doses, it is still highly recommended to stay at home and only go out when necessary as we patiently wait for more people to get vaccinated. Though you might feel safe, you might also be a potential carrier of the virus. We are still getting news of people who’ve completed both doses yet still tested positive. Hence, be mindful and careful with the freedom you are blessed with. 4. PRACTICE SANITIZATION, DOUBLE MASK AND CLEAN YOUR HANDS After that grocery run or refuelling your vehicle, running errands or visiting cafés; please always sanitize your hands! There are never too many pain points when it comes to keeping hygiene a priority. If possible, take that shower after you return home, just like how we did it during the first MCO. Always wear double masks even if it’s uncomfortable - Delta variants are potentially everywhere.

E

very day we go through day after day staying at home; in the blink of an eye, a year has passed and we are moving towards the second year mark of this new norm that has impacted millions of lives. With vaccination programs being prioritised and progressing with increased efficiency, we are looking foward to better months with some freedom to move around safely. Here are some of the things you need to know about getting vaccinated. 1. DO NOT CHOOSE OR BE PICKY TO WAIT IT OUT Chances are you won’t get much say in vaccine brands if you’re waiting patiently for your MySejahtera appointments. Occasionally, vaccine centres offer walk-ins and that is your opportunity to get that 1st dose as soon as possible. Choosing a preferable brand not only is time consuming with a slim chance, but you do not have any guarantee which is better than the other either. Your body’s health condition plays a role in the effectiveness of the vaccine. 2. THINK OF YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS Many people have underlying medical conditions and cannot only depend on the vaccine to fight Covid-19, but rely on Herd Immunity (occurs when a majority of a community becomes immune to a disease). While you are fickle-minded on which vaccine brand to go with, the risk towards vulnerable communities increases, thus diminishing the overall progress of these vaccination programs. Besides those with underlying medical conditions, vulnerable communities also include the elderly and young children.

5. EAT HEALTHY AND STAY HYDRATED Keeping your body healthy and strong by eating healthy and staying hydrated is the least we can do to ensure our own immune system is ready to battle the virus. Sleep and rest well, take supplements if necessary, and always stay hydrated with at least 10 glasses of water. Anything can happen, so we must prep our immune system to be as tough as it can be. Besides physical health, we are also constantly battling with our mental health with the current situation in Malaysia. Agitation, frustration, anxiety, burnout and emotional imbalance are all correlated to our mental health. We can try self-soothing to achieve a peace of mind amidst the chaos. Getting vaccinated not only allows for lower critical health risks, but also puts others at ease. Let us do our part to flatten the curve. The crucial first steps will allow us all to be able to go out safely again. #kitajagakita

Dental

Mouthwash and how to properly use it

R

emember the good old days of TV commercials? We’d see a lot of dental commercials, especially ones about mouthwash making your teeth clean and white. Well, most of the time, mouthwash doesn’t really work like what they portray on TV. So, together with Dr. Sylvia Lim of Phi Dental, let’s find out how mouthwash typically works to help keep our mouths clean and smelling fresh. Oral rinse, or as we commonly call it mouthwash, is a liquid product used to rinse our teeth, gums, and mouth. It usually contains an antiseptic that helps kill bacteria that lives between our teeth and on our tongue. Some of us also use it to freshen our breath while others use it to prevent tooth decay. However, what needs to be known is, mouthwash doesn’t replace brushing or flossing our teeth, and is only effective if we use it properly. With that in mind, studies do show that it can help prevent plaque and gingivitis, plus treating mouth ulcers and gum disease. So, how should you use mouthwash? Well, keep in mind to brush your teeth first. If you’re using fluoride toothpaste, be sure to wait a moment before using mouthwash, as it can wash away the fluoride from the toothpaste. Only pour the amount instructed by the brand of mouthwash you’re using, typically between 3 to 5 teaspoons. Rinse and gargle it in your mouth for about 60 seconds and spit it out when you’re done. Do not swallow it. If you do accidentally swallow it, don’t panic as you won’t experience any side effects or just a bit of nausea and diarrhea.

by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash 24

Bear in mind, mouthwash contains alcohol, menthol, and eucalyptol. That’s why you can have slight stinging sensations when you use them. Some even contain fluoride to help strengthen the teeth more. Though, with a combination of high volumes of fluoride and alcohol, you should really be careful to not ingest it in high amounts, especially with children. That is why children below 6 years old aren’t recommended to use mouthwash. At the end of the day, it’s really important to remember the key points of using mouthwash. First, it’s not a replacement for brushing and flossing. It isn’t really necessary actually. If you do use it, make sure to not ingest it, especially in high amounts. Always follow the instructions of your dentist or the label of the mouthwash you’re using.

BEING CREATIVE E

Creative education: making learning fun

ducation is the answer to everything! It really is. And creative education makes learning a pleasure.

It is the answer to women’s progress all over the world. To getting better jobs. To enjoying being part of the world we live in. To understanding issues such as global warming, Brexit, deforestation – or at least, if not understanding, having enough information to be able to contribute to a discussion. My mother told me that everyone has at least one interesting thing about them, and it is important at any social gathering to winkle it out. Education helps you do this – you are equipped for conversation and questioning, and you are definitely a more interesting person. It is important to keep an open mind when you are learning. So many people only acknowledge information that supports their own opinion, which obviously isn’t the point of research BUT it’s education that allows people to have an opinion and the tools to debate it. Everyone should receive a basic education. In Sabah, there are so many children and adults without papers. It seems to me that a serious effort must be made to make sure they are educated up to at least a basic reading and maths standard, so that they can do something with their lives, aim not to be a burden on whatever society they end up in, and avoid hanging about near the waterfront, barefoot, bored and desperate. This is surely a dangerously combustible situation. Can something be done about it? Teaching is an art as well as a profession, or both, if you like. We all remember the teacher who made lessons fun, and who made sure that we remembered what we learnt in them. This is what I call ‘creative education.’ A little learning by rote is OK, I suppose (dates, formulae, that sort of thing) but learning by doing is much jollier, and much more likely to have the desired effect. Lots of chalk and talk, lots of looking out of the window. Interaction, laughter, projects, surprise and FUN: enthusiasm, commitment and a real desire to learn. Education doesn’t have to be only exams either. We need some, to show that we have achieved a certain level, and for employers and others to know what that is, but we can also learn to plant, to grow, to cook, to sing, to paint, and thus prepare for a richer and – dare I say it – happier life.

want a surgeon guessing where my appendix is when I am under the knife. But these worthy and very useful professions are not all there is to working, living, earning. The so-called softer skills are, I notice, dismissed in Sabah, but I would suggest that they are vital. People must know how to communicate, how to share knowledge, how to attract customers. People buy from people they like, and they like knowing a bit about them. If you have a story that you can share, people are more likely to buy into it, and into what you are offering. Art enriches life. Paintings affect mood and mental health. Music makes all the difference to an environment. Writing and speaking, done well, mean accurate and powerful communication. We need this. Journalism shares information. It can be writing and/or speaking – in a newspaper, a magazine such as this one, the TV, the radio. Without it, we would know much less about what is going on, and without education, be ill-equipped to interpret what we are told. A book, a play, a poem can change your day, your heart, even your life. Believe me, it’s true. And if you want to know more, look into it. There is scientific proof of all this. WordPower Sabah has not happened this year because of Covid. A pity but this situation won’t last for ever. When we are once again allowed to run the event, with theatre, music, songwriting, public speaking and much much more, come and see for yourselves how respected practitioners have used their talents to enrich and expand their lives and those of others.

We need to eat, of course. And that means earning money. But there are many ways to do this. If we want to be a doctor, an architect, an accountant, then we need to know our stuff. I don’t

Winners in our hearts

S

omething many of us have been anticipating for this year is the 2020 Olympics! As proud Malaysians, this year we have a total of 30 athletes competing in 10 different sport categories! After a long wait and many anxious days of watching and waiting for matches, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have come to an end. The event itself lasted from 23rd of July 2021 to 8th of August 2021. I’m sure many Malaysians were glued to the TV or their phones to watch each event live. But, the most anticipated events were definitely badminton, diving and cycling track! Besides that, did you know that we also participated in archery, golf, athletics, sailing, artistic gymnastics, swimming and even shooting!

Rants & Raves

in just a matter of 2 seconds! Even with a mask on, he won the hearts of many Chinese citizens. Hailing from Sarawak, he was soon dubbed Malaysia’s “Flying Fish Prince”! Similarly, Pandelela did us all proud when she managed to land a spot in the finals. Although she did not get to the top 3, she will always be number 1 in our hearts! Shoutout to all the athletes that represented Malaysia and know that you did an excellent job! Malaysia is definitely proud of all of you!

Many were riding on the hopes that Malaysia would be able to bring home a gold medal this time around in either the badminton events, diving and cycling track. Sadly, that was not the case, but each and every participant has our support! It does not matter if they brought back a medal or not. Just the fact that they were able to participate in the Olympics has made many of us proud. Therefore, each and everyone of the 30 participants are winners in our hearts! They have definitely made all of us proud! What’s more, is that this year’s Tokyo Olympics has garnered a little fan club for some of our athletes! If you didn’t know, Lee Zi Jia has even managed to establish his own little fandom almost overnight! With fans coming up with fandom names and even lightsticks! Let’s just say that the “Shattleheart” fandom has taken off and managed to turn many K-pop fans into badminton fans! All jokes aside, swimmer Wilson Sim managed to gain fame

The Olympic Games

I

t’s true that the Covid-19 pandemic has been a showstopper, but the Olympics are beyond it. Although it was delayed for a year, the flame of the Olympics never ceased to die. Originally the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 was scheduled for July 2020 but cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Nevertheless, with strict protocols, the 2020 Olympic Games was finally held in Tokyo, Japan this year and it was a success. On a geeky note, did you know the Olympics was actually related to the Greek Gods when it first started? In ancient times, the Olympics wasn't just your typical sports entertainment, it was a sacred religious festival to honor Zeus the father of the Greek gods and goddesses. Based on archeological evidence, the ancient Olympics recorded back 3,000 years ago in 776 B.C or might be as early as 9th century B.C. It began in Olympia, Greece when a cook named Coroebus won the only athletic event at that time which was known as Stade, that refers to the modern word ‘Stadium’. It was a 192 meter long footrace. In the ancient Olympics, women were strictly prohibited from attending the competition. Contrary to the modern Olympics, women are able to compete in the Olympics for their country. Now, all men, women, even LGBTQ+ representatives, of different skin colour or religious background, have their rights to compete in the Olympics because at the end of the day the Olympics are meant for the whole world to come as one to enjoy the games without any kind of discrimination.

by Khaleedah Jailani Image | Unsplash 30

Despite our differences, the Olympics is one of those events that made us sit together to support our favourite team. Not just us, but the whole wide world. The highest viewer ratings in the history of the Olympic Games was 4.7 billion people, which is approximately 70% of the world’s population who tuned in to the Olympic Games Beijing 2008 in China. As spectators sit back and cheer for their team, tons of record breaking history in sports were witnessed in the Olympics. It is definitely a big highlight in the Olympics when one of the athletes breaks an Olympic record and sometimes even a world record as well. Just this year as surfers and skateboarders made their Olympic debut, history was made when 12 year old Kokona Hiraki and 13 year old Sky Brown became one of the youngest Olympic medalists when they competed in the Women’s Park Skateboarding. The world now will have to wait and be excited at the same time for the next one to be held at Paris, France in 2024. Till then and always, the Olympics is simply one of the most talked about events in the world.

Sometimes makeup just needs to be simple and yet still makes you feel confident, beautiful, and cares for you.

Asians generally have warmer skin tones, and naturally, warmer colours look amazing on our eyes. Pair a soft cool tone shimmer or metallic to any warm look, like the one in this Wild & Wonder Eye Shadow Palette in Mariposa, that has silver marbling and a cool pink shade to add interest.

Liquid eyeliners in pen form like the Feline Liquid Eye Liner are best because it feels more natural to hold

NO Parabens Looks great in the inner corners too!

The cat eye is such a classic but it can be a bit of a challenge on some Asian eyes. Here's a trick: Extend the flick at the outer corner of your eyes as an extension of your bottom lashline Connect the end of that line to the centre or right above your iris and fill in the blanks Extend a line from about 1/3 of your outer corner to the edge of the first line and fill it in Lightly line the top inner corner to complete the upper lashline

Parabens are widely used in many beauty products and there is concerns based on scientific studies that suggests parabens have hormone disrupting effects, harming fertility and reproductive organs, birth outcomes and increase the risk of cancer. Clean makeup swaps parabens with gentler preservatives like caprylyl gylcol and rosemary extract.

NO Alcohol

Alcohol has various purposes in makeup. Look out for denatured alcohol or alcohol denat in the ingredients list. While OK in smaller doses, alcohol denat corrodes the skin at a higher rate than regular ethanol when used in higher concerntration. It is also known to be drying on the skin, making your skin compensate by producing more oil.

NO Mineral Oils

There's a strong debate surrounding mineral oils in beauty. Mineral oil is derived from petroleum and while it helps lock in moisture by creating a barrier on your skin's surface, it doesn't absorb into the skin and may lead to sun damage, discolouration and clog pores.

NO Fragrance Palettes like this Sunny Glow 3in-1 Blush Palette isn't just for face. In the look on the left, I used the bronzer to help add more definition to the eyes and shape the nose. Use the blush as a matte eyeshadow for a simple look and pop the highlight shade on the inner corner, centre of the lid and beneath the brow bone.

Fragrance is usually added to mask chemical scents in products and is typically a blend of aromatic extracts from natural and synthetic ingredients. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), it is the leading cause of contact dermatitis similar to nickel and poison ivy. Some people may even experience rashes, itchiness, and hives.

FUN FACT: SLAE products are formulated without any of these ingredients!

“Freedom” Collection The current pandemic has forced modern human beings into an ever-isolated state than we’ve ever been in the near decades due to lockdowns that were enforced in various parts of the world. This brings the world and me included to reflect on the ultimate meaning of freedom. What does freedom mean to us living in this modern world? As such, in this project, I explored freedom through different representations of our modern world. Jewelsum____ jewel.s9727@gmail.com
