COALITION DUCHENNE - 10TH ANNUAL EXPEDITION MT. KINABALU 2022
Expedition Mt Kinabalu is one of two exciting mountain climbs that happened simultaneously, both raising awareness for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a fatal muscle wasting disease that affects one in 3500 boys. In Pakistan, three-time Malaysian Everest summiter Ravichandran Tharumalingam, who is also known as “Ravi Everest,” raised a flag for Coalition Duchenne (a charity founded by Sabahan Catherine Jayasuriya) as he became the first Malaysian to summit K2. Meanwhile in Sabah, Jayasuriya led her climbers to Mt. Kinabalu’s summit after a two year break imposed by the pandemic. Jayasuriya has led over 750 climbers to Sabah to raise Duchenne muscular dystrophy awareness.
Jayasuriya, who lives in California, grew up in Kota Kinabalu and always dreamed of taking her children to the summit of its sentinel mountain. Her son, Dusty Brandom, has Duchenne and would never make the climb. At 29, Dusty is in a wheelchair and severely impacted by the muscle wasting disease.
Dusty and the challenges faced by people with Duchenne have inspired Ravi Everest to become involved with the cause. Ravi is Coalition Duchenne’s official climbing partner. His global ambitions match Coalition Duchenne’s goal of raising global awareness for Duchenne.
Ravi has climbed Mt. Everest three times, in 2006, in 2007, and in May of 2022. Throughout his climbs he has endured many challenges, such as near-death in an avalanche on Mt. Manaslu in 2012, and losing eight fingers to frostbite on Everest in 2006. Despite these challenges, he continues to push himself to summit mountains and inspire others.
Jayasuriya’s award-winning film Dusty’s Trail: Summit of Borneo. The film is the story of Dusty’s journey with Duchenne, and it tells about people coming together from around the world to climb Mt. Kinabalu to raise awareness. Dusty’s Trail has an important message of hope in the face of adversity and shows the beauty of Sabah and its people to the world.
Coalition Duchenne has been one of the leading charities pushing for progress. Heart medications and ventilators have greatly extended longevity and there are five approved drugs, although the most advanced of these only treat specific genetic variations of the disease. Gene therapies including CRISPR hold great promise and trials are underway by companies in the United States and Japan. Coalition Duchenne is partnering with Cure Rare Disease, an organization looking at individual CRISPR strategies.
There have been initiatives to develop assistive devices and clothing to help Duchenne patients as they grow steadily weaker. An “Iron Man” like suit would be the ultimate goal but may be many years in the future. Echoing this dream, Jayasuriya’s cousin Yohan Jayasuriya joined the expedition and managed to summit Kinabalu wearing a superhero costume. His climb may qualify for the book of records.

Beauty pageants are growing in popularity these days, with a new one organised every other month. Each of them have their specific purpose and cause they’re advocating, while giving their contestants a chance to showcase not only their beauty but also their wits and talents. However, the “beauty” of these pageants is the ability of the winners to influence their fans to do something good for certain causes, places, and even society. This year, Miss Sabah Tourism (MST) 2022, is picking up where they last left off and making an impact in the tourism industry in Sabah.
The main aim of MST has always been to promote Sabah as a top spot for tourism, culture, and togetherness. It’s a platform for promoting our beautiful state to a wider audience, especially through social media this year. MST has gathered the top local and recognized brands in Kota Kinabalu to work together with MST in the promotion of tourism in Sabah, through the local fashion designers and talents, hospitality and food sector, and even environmental conservation. Hence, 36 brands such as the Jesselton Group, TCT Group, E-Cube, FM by Falida, Nasi Lemak Bamboo, Stanton Hotel, Breeze Magazine, Sabah Publishing House, Changgih Designers, and Talee were chosen. MST even held a charity event with Bataras to promote a “No Plastic Bag Campaign” throughout their outlets.
A total of 35 applicants submitted their applications online. Through an audition, the number thinned down to 12 finalists, where the winner was crowned on August 13, 2022. Before the
main event, however, the finalists took part in press conferences, photoshoots, and made public appearances for sponsored events. They were even given training for skills in public speaking, catwalking, makeup, and skincare.
This year, the finalists were asked to be extra active in social media, especially to conduct live streams or short videos in relation to Sabah tourism. “Public speaking and exposure in social media is an important element in MST. It trains the finalists into being the best version of themselves and also as Sabah’s spokesperson and tourism ambassador,” said Xandria Ban, MST State Director. This is what differentiates this year’s MST against the past. The finalists not only improve their skills, but also help promote known or hidden tourist spots around Sabah.
The 12 finalists are judged through a few criterias. Of course, most pageants judge through a contestant’s personality and presentation, as in their beauty and height. However, Xandria reiterates that the Q&A section of pageants holds more weight. Therefore, MST finalists should be knowledgeable in order to answer questions correctly and confidently. She adds, “I do judge their auras as well, because pageant queens should have a natural aura to them in order to stand out among the rest.” The MST title and crown isn’t the only award the finalists are competing for. They are also vying for subsidiary titles such as Miss Jojo, Miss Online Personality, Miss Photogenic, Best in Talent, Miss TCT, Miss Popularity, and Miss Flawless Skin. It
should be noted that the judges alone don’t hold all the power to crown the winner, as fan votes through social media are also considered as well.
During the climax of the pageant, Phoebe Ong was crowned Miss Sabah Tourism 2022. She won the titles for Best in Talent and Miss Jojo, as well as walking away with RM11,000 worth of prizes from a total of RM30,000 for the top 3 winners. Phoebe, along with the two runner-ups Ellen Rachel and Shareen Jee Wong, will be representing Sabah in the finals of the national Miss Tourism pageant in September. They will also be part of the “Going Places in Sabah with Me” campaign where they'll vlog their experiences visiting local hot spots and promoting the food, culture, and tourist spots around Sabah. Xandria hopes this campaign, with the help of the MInistry of Tourism Sabah and the Sabah Tourism Board, can boost Sabah in the tourism industry world wide. Xandria adds, “to those in the midst of chasing their dreams, if you believe in something, believe it all the way. Give your best to achieve that dream.”

music
jon james - the search
B: Have you faced any challenges?
JJ: For me, the biggest challenge is myself. Trying to get over the negativity that’s constantly in my head and the fear of my music not being liked by other people. But I always tell myself that my music is not for everyone and strive to make music that would attract people with the same taste in music as me, rather than to just make tunes to please everyone.
B: Tell us more about "The Search".
JJ: The Search is about finding myself as a person and as an artist. It’s filled with songs that contain messages that were kept deep within me for a long time but were let out through music. This album has helped me a lot in finding my vision to go forward in the music scene and also to move forward as an individual.
B: As an up and coming artist, what has your experience been like?
JJ: It has really been a rollercoaster ride but mainly a humbling experience. Taking the loss as a learning curve and the wins as a pathway to strive more. But honestly, I'm just excited to be making more music and sharing it to everyone even after the full release of The Search.
B: Anything you'd like to add?
Born and raised in Tamparuli, Jon James always had a different taste in music compared to everyone around him. He grew up listening to artists such as John Meyer, Ed Sheeran, and Frank Ocean. The influence from these artists and genres shows in Jon’s dreamy and chill music, evident in his single, Mutual Love. Even though Jon only kicked off his musical career in 2020, his love for music started when he was 10, when he joined his school and church choirs. At 17, Jon started joining singing competitions and performing on open mic nights around Kota Kinabalu.
Jon released his first single in 2020, yet today in 2022, he is in the middle of working on his first album, The Search. Read on and get to know more about Jon and his journey as a young upstart in the music industry.
B: How hard/easy has it been writing and composing your songs?
JJ: It has been very difficult, yet I’ve been having a lot of fun in the process. I started with not having a clue on how to mix my vocals to now mastering my own tracks. Though, I think it would be amazing to work with other producers for future projects because I like bouncing off ideas with other creatives.
B: Tell us about the songs you’ve released.
JJ: Well, currently I have a few songs under my belt. Among them are My All, Under the Moonlight, and Mutual Love being my latest single. Mutual Love is about not letting someone take advantage of your love and attention. This means setting yourself free and finding your worth as a person in a relationship and realising when to walk away.
JJ: Shoutout to Breeze for having me on this month’s issue and I hope to make Sabahans proud one day and make music that’ll make everyone feel good.

Phone designs have hit quite a stalemate these past few years. Of course there are outliers such as folding phones, but most of the market is saturated with slabs of bland looking electronics. So, what should a phone do to stand out against the rest? Nothing.
Jokes aside, the company’s name is “Nothing”. Although it’s a newcomer in the smartphone market, its founder Carl Pei, used to be the big wig at OnePLus. This means that Nothing isn’t just some start-up, but a newcomer with an experienced cast behind it.
So, what’s so different about the Nothing Phone [1]? Well, the distinctive feature of the phone is the design of its back. Nothing calls it the Glyph Interface. It’s a series/pattern of LEDs arranged into a glyph symbol. For now, it functions as a notification light that can also be adjusted and customised to differentiate between different people calling you. Another cool thing the Glyph Interface can do is show you how much the battery has charged when you shake it during the charging process. They can also be used as a fill light when you’re taking videos in darker situations. Nothing is promising more functionality in future updates.
With the Glyph Interface out of the way, the Nothing Phone [1] is basically a mid-range smartphone powered by Snapdragon 778+ chipset with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM. These days, mid-range smartphones don’t hold as much of a bad rep, as a lot of them now are as speedy as their flagship counterparts. Combine this with the Nothing OS, an operating system that is smooth and doesn’t feature any bloatware, you’ve got a recipe for a seamless smartphone experience. Plus, with an OLED screen capable of a 120Hz refresh rate, you won’t even notice you’re using a midrange smartphone.
Other notable features of the phone are the dual 50-megapixel cameras. The main camera features a wide aperture to let in more light and OIS (optical image stabilisation) to take smoother handheld 4K 30fps videos. All these are powered by a 4500mAh battery that’s able to be charged to 50% in half an hour.
Here’s the main question. Are you willing to shell out RM2400 for the Nothing Phone [1]? Although the back certainly stands out, if you squint hard enough, it does look like a certain fruit based product. The mid-range specs don’t really bother me, but for the price, you can get something better in the market. However, be sure to always keep in mind that Nothing isn’t selling you specs, but a smooth smartphone experience while standing out against a sea of bland looking smartphones.

automotive how the hachiroku became popular
Can you imagine a car with not much merit when it first came out, now garnering such a high price tag because of how hard it is to find it in good condition today. What looks like a daily grocery getter in most people’s eyes, the Toyota Corolla AE86 has become a cult classic thanks to a certain manga (Japanese comic book), called Initial D.
The Toyota Corolla AE86, commonly known as AE86 or Hachiroku (86 in Japanese), was introduced in May 1983 and produced until 1987. It was produced in Sport Compact (2-door coupe) and Hot hatch (3-door liftback) classes. Both classes were further divided into two more models called the Levin and Trueno, featuring fixed headlights and retractable headlights respectively. The Hachiroku had 1.6L Inline 4 engines, which at the time wasn’t anything special apart from it being able to rev up to 7800rpm. What did make it special was its 50/50 weight distribution and a front-engine rear-wheel drive layout, which was losing popularity industry-wide.
So, where does Initial D come into play? Well, when it was first published in 1995, it reintroduced the Hachiroku to the masses after almost 10 years of it being discontinued. This reintroduction made it popular in the racing and drifting scene. It wasn’t that the Hachiroku was never used for races before the manga, but it was always considered underpowered and wasn’t too popular among racers. However, the manga transformed it into a cult hero, an underdog that can win against cars that have way more power and cost much more.
The manga as well as the low cost of buying and racing a Hachiroku at the time made it a popular option for drifting in the car community at the time. However, the Hachiroku’s price skyrocketed in recent years due to how hard it is to find a pristine Hachiroku because most of them were wrecked in
drift races. Not bad for an underpowered grocery getter, right? Even though Toyota continued the Corolla nameplate after the Hachiroku, it wasn’t until 2012 that we were introduced to the official successor of the Hachiroku called the GT86. Toyota then followed it up with the GR86 in 2021.
These are two amazing cars that have huge boots to fill. There are still those who believe these two don’t deserve the 86 namesake as these are “underpowered” for sportscars. Kind of ironic when you think about it, don’t you think?
by Noel Jinguli Image | UnsplashKaino Studio is a new local attraction located in Luyang, Kota Kinabalu. The Kaino Studio, was born from the desire to create a unique carpet. The word ‘Kaino' is from the language of the KadazanDusun ethnic in Sabah which means 'Mari' in Malay. Kaino, is a space where ideas and creativity are generated.
The studio has gained fast popularity from visitors who go there to attend tufting workshops, where they design and produce their own handcrafted artisanal tufted rugs. The studio itself produce its own attractive tufted rugs with current designs consisting of a sharp selection of colour combinations. The process of producing the tufted rugs involves tufting gun methods, which pushes yarn through a special backing cloth.
At Kaino Studio, it is not just about learning and having fun. It is also a safe place to inspire people who are going through hard days, struggling with mental health, or maybe its just a space where they could express their emotions through tufting.
Founded in 2019 by artist Faezah Saddi, Kaino Studio started as a side project to express herself through her design using particular shapes and colours. PHOEBE ONG: FROM TAKING AN OPPORTUNITY TO BECOMING A QUEEN
Fun Fact: Phoebe also won the title of Best in Talent during MST 2022. She has been dancing since she was 6 years old. Dancing isn’t only fun for her but also allows her to express herself.Phoebe Ong | From Taking An Opportunity to Becoming A Queen
B: Tell us about your experience with MST.
P: Well, after I submitted my application online, I had to audition to be a finalist. I was so relieved when I passed the audition. Then we had our pageant week where we went to visit the sponsors of the pageant. During the same week, we also had to do photoshoots and rehearsals. It was a really great experience bonding with the other finalists and creating memories together. I have to be honest though, one of the main challenges for me was the heels. We had to wear high heels and bear the pain for long hours at a time. My feet really hurt but there wasn’t much I could do. No pain no gain, right? Another challenge for me was public speaking. Thankfully, we had lots of training and practice to help us keep calm and confident.
B: What was your goal for the pageant?
P: Frankly, I just wanted to experience the pageant as a contestant. I honestly wasn’t expecting to win and just gave my best and enjoyed the experience.
B: How did you feel when you were crowned as the winner of MST 2022?
You should always take the opportunity presented to you. That’s the lesson we can learn from this month’s personality. Phoebe Ong took the opportunity to join her first ever beauty pageant. She finds out that beauty and grace aren’t all it takes to be a pageant queen, as talent, smarts, and confidence are equally as important. As she made her way through the weeks of training and practice, Phoebe was glamorously crowned as Miss Sabah Tourism (MST) 2022. Read on and find out more about Phoebe Ong and her experience with the Miss Sabah Tourism 2022 pageant.
B: Hi Phoebe, why don’t you start by introducing yourself to our readers?
P: Hi! My name is Phoebe Ong Yi Huui. I’m 25 this year and I’m from Kota Kinabalu. Currently, I’m an insurance agent with Prudential.
B: What do you do during your free time?
P: When I’m out, I love hanging out with my friends in cafes. If I’m at home, I usually just watch TV shows to pass the time. Oh, I also love travelling as well!
B: Before joining MST, did you participate in other beauty pageants?
P: Honestly, MST is the first pageant I have ever participated in. I was scrolling through Instagram and saw that MST was looking for contestants. I’ve always wondered what it was like to join one of these beauty pageants but I haven’t had the opportunity to do so. So when I saw the ad, I thought, why not?
P: It was a mix of excitement, happiness, and relief! I’m truly grateful for the belief everyone had in me, and saw the best in me to be able to carry the MST title. Before, I’ve always lacked a bit of confidence in myself. Now, winning the MST title has made me change the way I look at myself. It’s truly a life changing experience.
B: So, what’s next for you in the future?
P: Well, obviously I’ll be doing my best representing Sabah for the national Miss Tourism pageant. On a personal note, I’ll do my best to carry the MST title with pride and further chase after success in my life. Plus, I’ll also be doing everything I can to promote Sabah tourism to the world.
B: Anything you’d like to add?
P: I wish everyone the best in life and to be brave in chasing their dreams. One small opportunity might change the rest of your life.

“Today marks a very proud day in the story of Sapulut Forest Development”, announced Mr. Bryant Wong, the General Manager of Sapulut Forest Development (Sapulut) in the morning of the 25th of July 2022. Sapulut, which manages Forest Management Unit (FMU) 14, part of the Sapulut Forest Reserve, was given the honour of hosting a visit by the Chief Minister of Sabah, Yang Amat Berbahagia Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Bin Haji Noor, who was invited to officiate the opening of Sapulut’s nursery in an inauguration ceremony.
The visit was an important marker of the Chief Minister’s commitment to the Industrial Timber Planting (ITP) Policy announced on the 17th of January 2022. ITP areas are an important part of the Sabah Forest Department’s Sustainable Forest Management. They are areas of degraded forests that have been zoned for replanting with fast growing industrial timber trees that in the future, will make up the vast majority of timber and wood use, alleviating the pressure to clear more forest areas and enabling new industries that will be part of green, circular economies.
Sapulut aimed to showcase the achievements of their young camp based workforce, made up of 248 workers, 239 who are Sabahans, 137 of whom are living in the surrounding areas. Village heads of settlements within FMU14 were also invited to witness the event and staff hailing from these villages were given the opportunity to share their experience working at Sapulut, many of them noting how they were able to provide for their families in a secure job while staying close to their village.
Light afternoon rain preceded the arrival the Chief Minister and other esteemed VIPs, including the State Secretary of Sabah, the Chief Conservator of Forests, ADUN Nabawan, and Secretary of Natural Resources, offering fresh relief from the sun’s intense glare that morning, gradually wavering just as the stream of vehicles carrying the honoured guests arrived. The event began with an opening speech by Sapulut’s Managing Director, Mr. Norman Wong who highlighted the achievements of the team throughout the recent pandemic and the significance of
Mr. Wong also alluded to the new crisis of high energy and labour costs in the wake of inflation aggravated by geopolitical conflicts. Mr. Wong expressed a positive outlook that ITPs will play an equal part in the state’s sustainable forest management strategy as it will produce more sustainable timber to supply raw materials to the economic value chain. He ended his speech by ensuring the Chief Minister that, “With a productive ITP and economic value chain, the ITP policy will provide 80,000 employment and achieve a GDP of 12 billion by 2035 or even sooner if started right and done well.”
After the speech the chief minister was invited to the stage to sign the Sapulut guestbook and accept a memento from Mr. Wong before the event shifted to the nursery site where the Chief Minister officially opened the nursery by revealing a commemorative plaque. After a briefing by staff in charge of the nursery and learning more about the eucalyptus pelitta seedlings being prepared for planting, the Chief Minister cordially departed from the forestry complex followed by the rest of the guests. The coordination and communication between staff members of multiple departments throughout the preparations of this event truly championed the theme of the event and the Sapulut core value of, “It takes a team to win”.
fitness carbs
One of the most common misconceptions that’s been around in the health and fitness industry is that you have to cut out all forms carbohydrates from your diet if you want to lose fat. Carbohydrates have been blamed for everything from getting fat, to brain fog, even the new Thor movie being banned, by some. Today we’re going to bust this myth and tell you why it may not be the best idea to completely eliminate carbs from your diet.
First, we must understand that the driving force for weight loss is not cutting out certain nutrients from your diet, but instead being in a caloric deficit. What that means is, eating less than what your body can burn off at a given activity level. Even if your diet fully consists of only carbs, you can still lose weight provided you are in a caloric deficit. So even if you do lose weight from cutting out carbs from your diet, it’s not the elimination of carbs that causes the weight loss, but it is that the elimination of excess calories means you are burning more calories than you are consuming.
Elimination of carbohydrates will have other unintended consequences as well. Among the 3 macronutrients (Protein, Carbohydrates, Fats), the human body’s biggest source of energy is carbohydrates. Your body burns through Carbohydrates to fuel your workouts, daily life and even aid in recovery. Having carbs in your diet can even help spare muscle loss. In other words, you will be putting a lot of the most basic functions of the human body at risk by completely eliminating carbs, as you would if you were to eliminate fat or protein. All 3 macronutrients have specific roles to play in the body.
What you can do instead, is consider lowering your fat intake first, to a degree. Gram to gram, fats have the highest amounts of calories among the 3 macronutrients. By reducing your fat intake, a caloric deficit can already be generated for most people. If your fat intake is already low and you’re still not losing weight, then it’s time to examine your carbohydrate intake. Just like fats and protein, carbohydrates are not categorically bad for you, but there are definitely better or worse sources of carbs. Sugary carbs like donuts, ice cream, cakes etc, contain a lot of calories, often putting people in a caloric surplus by themselves. If your carb sources are generally clean (rice of all colours, potatoes, vegetables), then all you need to do is to reduce your portion. Besides lowering calorie intake, a caloric deficit can also be generated by exercising.
Weight loss is determined by whether you are under a caloric deficit or not, and that caloric deficit doesn’t necessarily have to come from carbs. It is almost never a good idea to completely cut out any of the 3 Macronutrients on a health standpoint like most fad diets suggest. Balance is key! WHAT’S ON THE INSIDE THAT MATTERS
Here’s a list to properly love yourself and grow your confidence!
BE YOURSELF!
First rule to love yourself, be yourself. Get to know what you like, what you don’t enjoy doing. If you like Anime, cool! There’s a community to make friends to everything we enjoy – art communities, automotives, movie junkies, fur-parents, gamers. You name it! Stay true to yourself and work towards things you enjoy doing and naturally you will meet new friend, and slowly know that you are never alone. When you are confident enough to present yourself as it is, that is the inner beauty where physical appearance can never showcase.
HAVE AN OPEN-HEART AND MIND
Inner beauty comes hand-in-hand with maturity. I say so, as you open your mind and heart to listen and channel positive energy on a regular basis. You not only feel happier, the energy will resonate indirectly influencing others around you. A straight up example is when you have an open spirit, you will naturally smile more! Smiles not only helps makes other people’s day – it’s a natural way of beauty and let’s others know you are approachable. I mean, life is hard enough on its own with our daily issues – we don’t need more complains and toxic energy. An open mind rids depression, but also proof that an intellectual person will still win over the beautiful bimbo. Whoops! Sorry not sorry.
IMPROVE YOURSELF
Whenever we talk about beauty, our minds automatically think of perfect skin, beautiful lashes, shimmering eyes, silky hair and that hot body that everyone deemed as beauty – or may I put it the perfect goddess. Aside from make-up products, aesthetic boosters, and even plastic surgery at some point, we sometimes forget that true beauty lies deep within the person’s personality and heart. We may not have the perfect photogenic face, but still gets love and support from people. So what makes these people different? Their personality! Which is something much more important as every individual has their own personality that is true to themselves and as it shines through, it will resonate and attract. So, to the you who is wondering why you have not found your perfect partner yet? Love yourself first and that special someone will come by without you trying too hard.
But loving ourselves is such a cliché thing we hear a lot nowadays; well yes. It’s a fact.
The Law of Attraction works that way, and by loving yourself more – loving energy would resonate, and like-minded people would attract! I mean, a relationship should be long term, right? You may try to fit in and be ‘the typical’ checklist partner –but when everything is unnatural and you general do not feel comfortable being yourself, then thank you, next.
This is vital. By improving yourself in terms of your lifestyle, learning a new skill or attending networking sessions is to build up your confidence. Yes, I may be contradicting to my point of Being Yourself; but staying at your comfort zone and not take up new challenges doesn’t make you any different from a lazy and closed-minded person. As you build new habits to improve yourself, you naturally grow as a person and experience changes in life, which not only is beneficial physically, it is also helpful for career growth, financial stability and even in relationships! Whether is to finally lose that weight, or to sing in that competition. Challenge yourself and you will see your own Glow up!
So the next time, someone denied you of beauty; just know that they are just not the one to appreciate who you really are. There is so much to beauty beside facial features and perfect curves. At the end of the day, always in it for the long run – and it is always a good personality.
by Geraldine Yong Image | UnsplashBraces for Teenagers
Braces are a more common sight these days as they are more accessible for a majority of people. It isn’t just about fixing your teeth anymore, as many consider it a fashion statement. However, you should definitely consider the what’s and why’s of getting braces done for your teeth. So to all the teenagers considering braces, and to all the parents who are warming up to the idea, learn more about it with Dr. Sylvia Lim of Phi Dental as we discuss braces for teenagers.
Early adolescence is considered the best time to get braces. During this period of a person’s life, our jaws are more malleable with the jawbone tissue being responsive to repositioning. This is not to say adults past a certain age can’t and shouldn’t get braces, it’ll just be a slower process compared to being a teenager. FOr teenagers, it usually requires about 16 to 18 months to fully reposition the jaw. Teens between the ages of 9 and 14, especially those who haven’t gone through puberty yet, will experience faster and better jaw adjustments with their jaws.
However, it isn’t that simple as dentists still need to determine the necessity of the procedure. They usually look at a few criteria such as:
1. Misaligned jaw and unbalanced bite which can cause gums to recede and deteriorating oral bones from the pressure in the wrong places.
2. Faulty spacing due to missing teeth, small teeth, or due to other issues.
3. Crowding of teeth which can become an issue if left untreated.
If it’s determined that you have one or more of the issues stated, you possibly require braces. Keep in mind however, not every case should be fixed as virtually everyone has slightly misaligned jaws or face spacing and crowding issues. Only the worst case of these issues require the use of braces.
There are alternatives to braces such as dental aligners that are practically invisible as well as removable. However, as mentioned above, braces have become a fashion statement. Therefore, Dr. Sylvia advises everyone to get their teeth checked by professional and certified dentists. There are many fake dentists offering fake braces just for the sake of looks. Having braces done by them come with risks such as choking, poisoning, infections, shifting teeth, and worst of all, tooth loss. Remember, no fashion trend is worth risking your health.
So, considering all that’s said, take the time to make a proper decision. There are a lot of professional dentists and orthodontists you can seek for further information. Phi Dental is now equipped with a digital scanner to better provide 3D scanning services for braces and clear aligner treatment plans.

PICTURE PERFECT OR NOT?
Beauty is to the beholder’s eyes; we may have various perspectives of beauty; from inner beauty with good personalities to your commonly go-to visual goddess. The perceptions of beauty in current era are quite fixated to physical appearance, with social media being the major form of showcase and a significant justification for anything pretty and beautiful – your followings and engagement would be high. I mean who doesn’t like a pretty face or a perfect body right?
So what exactly is beauty? We get annual beauty pageants with representatives from all over the world all the way down to our hometown village. The perfect nose, pair of eyes, and body significantly gets approval within the first glance while the notso-worthy visuals gets filtered out. There is no wonder most ladies chase beauty as a form of acknowledgement – and with that said, plastic surgery and unhealthy diets are the way of beauty. But should it be that way?
Everywhere around the world, we prioritize aesthetics and visual that is perfect to the naked eye. When we think of picture perfect, we take supermodels or cover girls as a reference. Supermodels with facial features deemed beautiful and bodies which sometimes can be impossible to achieve, or so I may even say looks too thin. But are these references the true beauty as we should perceive? Are people with these beauty standards truly happy? Without a doubt there is always sacrifices, it takes hard work and great effort by these attractive people; we usually take it for granted. Yes, some may have went through the knife option, some go through an dangerous mental stage to achieve what they have today.
However, it is not all bad. With the said efforts and perseverance, comes with fruitful confidence. Sometimes, most often it comes with financial benefits too! Given that the society as much as we wish it would be more fairly judge on a person’s personality, opens doors to more opportunities to people of confidence and passed the status quo perceived good-looking. Also known to be the Fame & Fortune a lot of us yearn for; especially the current generations who aspires to be TikTok Influencers and the stardom industry.
While we dream of having the picture perfect features, the majority of us are quite content with how we look or how our partners look like. Yes, we may be admiring all the pretty ladies around wishing that they were your girlfriend, or that Korean oppa on Kdrama series to be your perfect husband, but most often it is the personality that counts! As much as we enjoy the eye candy of beautiful people around us, ‘the one’ will always be the person who syncs well with you on conversations, makes you laugh and feeling all tingly inside or just being the themselves that charms people no matter what they look like.
So the next time you swipe next for the beautiful or handsome candidate on tinder, remember to never judge a book by its cover.
by Geraldine Yong Image | UnsplashThere is absolutely no way for anyone to reminisce about Hollywood in the 50’s without thinking of Marilyn Monroe. The woman whose face and figure became THE definition of sexy in the 50’s is relevant even today, close to 60 years after her death. She existed long before Netflix was founded, and her story will be told once again in the upcoming Netflix movie Blonde. She is a sex symbol, a pop culture icon, and a celebrated actress, a shining star. But Marilyn wasn’t always Marilyn. In a distant past that many don’t recall, she was Norma Jean.
Norma Jean had a rocky childhood, to say the least, moving from one foster home to another. Before she even turned 16, she’d lived in 12 foster homes, and spent some time in an orphanage.
She was 18 when she first realised that she could be a model, and was known to be one of the most ambitious and hard-working models there’d been. Within a year, she’d appeared in 33 different publications, which was the exposure that helped kick-start her acting career, giving birth to the stage name Marilyn Monroe.
Albeit having zero acting experience, Marilyn was determined to make it as an actress, and continuously improved her craft, even if she was often shy and insecure. Every small role she received she did her best, and bit by bit, she built upon these small successes to become the worldwide icon that she was, and is today.
However Monroe’s story is fascinating not just because of her rise to stardom, but also because it is interlaced with her tumultuous personal life. It’s as if for every success in her career,
there seems to be an equally devastating blow in her personal life; one that a very unforgiving society did not take too kindly to. Torn between who she was, what society expected from a woman, who her husbands wanted her to be, and her career, Monroe was caving under the pressure to be perfect on every front. Eventually, drugs and alcohol was the only way she could cope, the overdose of which led to her death at the mere age of 36.
The glory of Monroe’s art is seen on silver screens and magazine spreads, each a timeless piece that is left behind for us to admire. In equal effect, the tragedy that is her life remains a chilling story that cuts to the bone: of a woman whose outward beauty is so celebrated that she loses who she is, even her life, to a society that was harsh and unforgiving.
"A woman knows by intuition, or instinct, what is best for herself.” Monroe’s story calls for us to be true: to our intuition and instincts, to our bodies, to our intentions, and to our hearts. The face of Marilyn Monroe might be etched into our minds as a pop culture icon, but what truly made her iconic was her tenacity, her devotion to her art, and the beauty of her soul, qualities that should also be carved into our hearts.

TEMPURUNG CAFE: A NEW ADVENTURE
New location, new adventure. Tempurung Cafe has recently gone for a big move and is now located at 88 Mall, 88 Market Place, Kepayan in Kota Kinabalu.
Before we talk about the new outlet, let's go back in time a bit to the beginning. Founded by Sabahan lady Natalie Chow and her Australian husband David Chin. It all started in 2016 with a humble small version of Tempurung Cafe located along Gaya Street. Back then, it was famous for its signature coconut ice cream which was served in a "tempurung" (a Malay word means coconut shell, thus the name of the cafe).
Then Tempurung Cafe moved to Central Plaza in 2019. Joint venture with her sister Beverley Chow, who is the baker and Chef in the hot kitchen. The outlet here featured more menu items and has gained more popularity for its dishes like their family's own recipe - beef stew rice, Australian burgers & pizzas, and desserts. A menu comprises a fusion between local Sabahan and Australian food. Despite the popularity, the cafe did went through a rough period yet they managed to persevere through the past 2 years of the pandemic.
And now they have made the big move to 88 Mall with a new look and new menu items. This is not the 1st time the Breeze team made a review on Tempurung Cafe. The 1st one at Central Plaza was truly satisfying and really showcased how a small cafe can really pack a punch with it's delicious menu items.
Before entering the new outlet, we loved what we saw at the entrance. It really made a statement that the cafe is now having a new look and we know we're going to experience something different. Upon entering, we were welcomed by a more spacious and inviting look compared to the previous outlet. It has a really calm yet mood-lifting ambience, especially with the natural light coming through the windows.
require much explanation as we can safely tell, they didn't lose their touch after moving to the new outlet. Now you can opt for Beef Stew Rice or Beef Stew Pasta is a welcoming change.
Then comes the new one, Nasi Ikan Legend. On the surface, this looks like your typical home cooked Tenggiri Fish with rice. The fish was fried to perfection and tasted great. The homemade sambal though just makes the whole dish to die for. This is a must try dish. Truly a legend. It was hard to move on to another menu item at this point. Felt like we can go for a 2nd round.
But move on we did with their Meatballs & Mashed Potatoes. If you're a meatball lover and even better a lover of mash potatoes too, then this is a must try as well. The taste is just about right and leaves you wanting for more.
Next, their Aussie burgers & Aussie pizzas. What we love about them is that they have this certain satisfying taste yet different from the usual burgers and pizzas out there. You just have to come and try to know what we mean. We had a satisfying dose of Aussie Smoked Duck and Meatlovers pizza (All their pizzas uses in-house pizza dough made with Australian recipe and hand-stretched ready for your favourate toppings) and Aussie Burger (Authentic Australian style burger, flavoured with a secret homemade sauce). The standout however is the Lettuce Burger. It is not all the time you see a burger served without buns and this one is meant for those aiming for a low carb meal.
Off to lighter food as we had their tasty homemade spring rolls and some delicious cakes. Their cake menu changes every few days so you're always in for a new treat. Speaking of a new treat, we also had their Biscoff Coconut Smoothie. New in the menu, the smoothie is bound to satisfy Biscoff and smoothie lovers.
And of course, to finish things off, we had a scoop of their signature tempurung ice cream. Still give a thumbs up just like the rest of the menu items we tried. And we just tried only 'some' menu items out of the rest in the menu.
To sum it up, Tempurung Cafe really took a step further with their new outlet. A new adventure looking good with a new look and new menu items, with the regular items still as good as before. Definitely appealing for new and regular customers.
