Borneo Coffee Alliance and the Sabah International Coffee Festival The Borneo Coffee Alliance (BCA), operating within the Federation of Sabah Industries (FSI), is spearheaded by Mr. Dick Lee, BCA’s Chairman. The primary goal is to establish a comprehensive platform connecting all facets of the coffee industry, both locally and internationally, aiming to showcase and promote Sabah’s coffee and its products in local and global markets. Introduced in 2016, the coffee festival initially bore the title “KK Coffee Festival” during its first and second editions. Subsequently, in 2018 and 2019, it underwent a name change to become the “Borneo Coffee Festival.” In 2022, a rebranding occurred, evolving into the “Sabah International Coffee Festival,” a transformation that persisted into 2023, bolstered by wholehearted support and collaboration from the DBKK. BCA extends its heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors, supporters, and partners who have been pivotal in the continuous success

of SICF 2023. Over the years, BCA has actively engaged in organising workshops and training, fostering the growth of professional baristas and introducing the barista career path to the younger generation. The competitions hosted by SICF served as a platform to nurture budding talents with international standards, offering local youth opportunities to learn from both local and international judges. Notably, in 2016, BCA initiated the first Latte Art Competition and Brewers Cup Competition in Borneo, while in 2023, through SICF, they introduced the inaugural Mixology Drinks Competition and Chocolate Beverage Competition in the region. Teamwork, collaboration, and skillful work are indispensable components of every successful event narrative, and SICF boasts a dedicated team working behind the scenes – the BCA councils & committees. Lead by BCA Chairman Mr. Dick Lee Pit Kong, with his BCA team.

SABAH TOWARDS ZERO POVERTY BY 2024

THE SECRETARIAT OF SABAH MAJU JAYA IS MANDATED BY THE SABAH CABINET TO COORDINATE THE HARDCORE POVERTY ERADICATION PROGRAMME Based on the data gathered from Implementation Coordination Unit Prime Minister’s Department, Sabah (ICU JPM, Sabah), it is reported that Sabah had registered a total number of 22,510 head of households for hardcore poor (“KIR - Ketua Isi Rumah”) comprising of 101,113 household members (“AIR – Ahli Isi Rumah”) in the year of 2023. In relation to that, the districts of Pitas, Semporna, Keningau and Kota Marudu are found to top the lists of the above said statistics. This significant numbers places a central concern over the poverty issue in the region. Sabah government recognised the challenges and determined to eradicate poverty with the allocation of RM175 million to be implemented through various government programmes which will be coordinated by the Secretariat of Sabah Maju Jaya, Chief Minister's Department, ICU JPM SABAH, Community Development Leader Unit (“UPPM-Unit Pemimpin Pembangunan Masyarakat”), Malaysia Productivity Corporation (“MPC”), district offices and other relevant agencies. There will be three (3) stages to the programme's implementation: short, medium, and long-term efforts. These programmes will, in general, focus on four (4) key areas: job opportunities, entrepreneurship, housing and education. The short-term programme includes five (5) initiatives: MySMJ: Profiling, MySMJ:PBT (Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan), MySMJ:DO (District Office), MySMJ:GLC (Government-linked Company), and MySMJ:Industry. The MySMJ: Profiling programme is one of the ongoing projects coordinated by the Secretariat in which eligible candidates of hardcore poor household members are appointed to carry out on-field verification of information concerning each hardcore poor families in their respective districts/areas.

As of November 2023, the Secretariat of Sabah Maju Jaya had appointed and provided training to a total of 54 MySMJ Profilers. Regarding other short-term programmes relating to district offices, government-linked companies (GLCs) and local authorities; a few other businesses are contributing to this endeavor by offering job opportunities in their respective organisations fulfilling the programmes’ objectives which will lift them out of hardcore poverty, at the same time raising their household income. Reiteratively, the medium term programme consists of five further initiatives — MySMJ:Tani, MySMJ:Mikro, Rumah Mesra SMJ, MySMJ:Tour, and MySMJ:Care. These programmes will intensify efforts to create long- term sustainable revenue streams, especially in the areas of tourism, micro and small companies, and agriculture. For example, Rumah Mesra SMJ provides economical homes to eligible registered recipients in eKasih system ICU and financial support to the hardcore poor especially the elderly or disabled. In relation to the long-term programme, Sabah government affirmed through the MySMJ:Modal Insan(Human Capital), that providing scholarships and assistance for human capital development to children from hardcore poor household. This initiative will be accessible from primary school to higher/tertiary education, aiming to provide a holistic solution. Additionally, Sabah government intends to set up MySMJ: Teroka in the future by emulating the Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) concept in which state-owned idle land is developed and managed for economic purposes with the goal of improving the targeted groups' economic well-being and skill levels. The Secretariat of Sabah Maju Jaya have undertaken various engagements with relevant stakeholders to assure poverty eradication efforts are the responsibility of all parties. The implementation stage of a project to eradicate poverty is just as vital as the other stages which includes comprehensive approach, active participation and monitoring of participants.

MUSIC

JORDAN QUEKA: POSITIVE ENERGY ALL AROUND within his craft—creating music that focuses on positivity and spreading good energy. He calls it “QUEKA ENERGY”, an expression of his inner state and mentality through the art of music. It all began during the early days of the MCO lockdown in the year 2020. Feeling trapped in his room, he decided to put himself in a positive environment by making music that could cheer him up. Jordan got inspired by amazing rappers such as Chance the Rapper, Lil Yachty, and Don Toliver to get an idea of what kind of music he would make. That marks the beginning of Jordan’s journey to spread positive energy during those difficult times. Aimed at youngsters who are struggling in life, he delivers his positivity in the style of pop and rap while encouraging listeners to be themselves and never look back. But making music that spreads positivity isn’t as easy as it sounds. Jordan has his own step-by-step methods to make sure the music he makes stays up to par with his standards. First, he lays down all his ideas on a mood board. Second, he tries to link them all together in a way that makes sense. Third, he executes it by freestyling some melodies, and then the lyrics come after. There is a certain state of mind that Jordan stays in in order to keep himself in the flow. This state of mind can be described as “positive” and “energetic.” He indulges himself in his hobby of playing basketball and enjoying streetwear fashion to express his identity and spread his positive energy. Jordan manages a retail store, but he still tries to pursue his dream full-time. His songs, which showcase his passionate songwriting laid against a backdrop of colorful and warm beats, have drawn the favor of his hometown, as evidenced by his time spent on radio stations, interviews with local hosts, and an array of live performances, where he opened the performances for TaeYang from Big Bang, CL from 2NE1, Suho from EXO at Borneo Sonic Music Festival 2023. LENOVO LEGION GO: TESTING THE LIMITS OF HANDHELD GAMING

W

hen the Nintendo Switch came out, it was of course a big deal, but nobody ever thought it would revive handheld gaming like it has. Today, the handheld gaming market is ripe with devices for all budgets and gaming interests. You have your lower end devices that can emulate games from yesteryear’s console, then you have the higher end devices such as the Steamdeck that plays most of the latest games available. Well today, let’s take a look at one of these higher end devices called the Lenovo Legion Go. I won’t go too in-depth on the specs because there are so many cool features to talk about. To put it simply, it has an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor along with RDNA Graphics that’s integrated into the processor, which is more than enough to handle most modern games, especially for its form factor. For memory, the Legion Go features 16GBs of RAM and upto 1TB of storage. The unit has a 49.2WHr battery capacity while the controllers have 900mah capacity. Now you might be confused, why would the controllers need batteries? Well, like the Switch, the controllers are detachable. But unlike the Switch, you can’t use the controllers separately for multiplayer games. You can however transform it into a hybrid controller mouse combo. There’s a plastic attachment included for the bottom of the right controller. That’s also where sensors are located, like the ones you find on the bottom of a regular mouse. This means that the left controller controls movement while the right one controls where you’re facing and the shooting. You literally hold it like a gun and pull the trigger like so as well.

20

The screen is an 8.8inch QHD+ touchscreen that has a 144Hz max refresh rate for hardcore gamers who need it. If that isn’t big enough for you, you could hook it to an external monitor through USB-C cables, making it a very capable “Battle Station” as Lenovo puts it. Oh, did I mention it comes with Windows 11 too? The handheld gaming market is currently thriving and the Legion Go is definitely testing the limits. With the competition hot on its heels, I see a bright future for handheld gaming coming sooner rather than later. by Noel Jinguli Image | lenovo.com

JAPAN AS THE CENTRE OF THE AUTOMOTIVE WORLD? car tuning shops and aftermarket parts producers are from Japan. Enkei, Greddy, HKS, Spoon, Liberty Walk, Nismo, and RWB among others are all Japan based companies that help improve your cars performance and looks. The media, be it on the big screen, anime, and even social media, have also romanticised Japan as being the hub of car culture. No doubt Initial D introduced drifting and underground racing in Japan to the world. Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift, although was highly criticised when it came out, became a cult classic for showing a glimpse of Japanese car culture on the big screen while YouTube channel Noriyaro provides a bigger picture on the Japanese car scene as a whole, showcasing car meets of different car cultures in different parts of Japan. Speaking of car meets and car shows, Japan is known to host them extravagantly. Case in point, the Tokyo Auto Salon is a must-see custom car show held annually that showcases the latest development in car trends and innovation. The car meet in Daikoku Parking Area is also nothing to be scoffed at. Located in the Daikokufuto, it’s one of the world’s most famous car meets, having gone viral around the world over the years.

ar guys everywhere, what is your dream destination to drive or even just to spot cars? Some of you will say on some magnificent road in Europe, or a road trip through the USA. Well, I’m sure some, if not most, would love to go to Japan. I mean, who would deny Japan as one of the top destinations for a car guy? And here’s why. Reason number 1 is the historical and cultural significance of the country. For decades, Japan has been a big player in the automotive industry and a hub for technological innovations. Toyota, Honda, Nissan. These are some of the top automotive names world wide. And I haven’t even mentioned cult favourite names either. Japan has produced some of the best and most loved cars in the world. This has sparked a car culture centred on the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM). JDM fans are not only fawning over Japanese cars, but especially Japanese cars made specifically for the Japanese market. Cars such as the Mazda RX-7, Nissan GT-R, Toyota Supra, Honda NSX, are all highly coveted among car lovers. The Japanese car lovers have also spawned many other subcultures. From the cute Kei cars to the weird and wacky Bosozoku movement, almost all car lovers can belong to any subculture in Japan. Plus, it also doesn’t hurt that a lot of famous 22

ota Kinabalu, 16 January 2024 - Recycle, Revive, Ocean Alive is a marine conservation programme held at Prince Philip Park, Tanjung Aru. It is organized by Korea’s Seoul National University and Universiti Malaysia Sabah, together with NGO One Heart, Tanjung Aru Marine Ecosystem (TAME) Center, and Tanjung Aru Eco Development (TAED) Sdn Bhd. Recycle, Revive, Ocean Alive is part of the 2024 Winter Global Seoul National University (SNU) Programme to promote cultural exchange between Korea and Malaysia through a good environmental cause.

One of the most participating activities is the recycled plastic keyrings. The turtle shaped upcycled plastic keyrings are made from plastic 2 and 4. These plastic wastes are from approximately 4kg of plastic collected at Happy Plastic Borneo. Participants paint their own keyring with their own creativity or draw turtle carapace according to species, so they have a better understanding about turtle species. Find out more at www.facebook.com/TAMECenter.

The campaign’s objective is to strengthen students’ global citizenship and cultivate their abilities as compassionate individuals, and support local communities in partner countries through knowledge sharing and social responsibility activities. Joined by students from respective universities and also members of the public, the campaign had them engage in various activities including beachcombing, marine endangered species photo exhibition, survival games, and upcycling of plastic wastes into attractive keyrings. Michael Yap, coordinator from TAME Center said, “For marine awareness, conservation, and protection to be successful, it requires the collective efforts and cooperation of everyone, at the local community, national level, and transboundary between countries. This is especially crucial for addressing issues related to marine endangered species, particularly migratory species, and pollution.”.

NOURISHING SMILES: A DELECTABLE JOURNEY TO HEALTHY TEETH 3. Protein Powerhouses: Lean proteins, from poultry to fish and legumes, offer a substantial helping of nutrients vital for maintaining strong teeth and gums. Make these protein-packed choices a regular feature in your meals for a hearty dental defence. 4. Omega-3 Overture: Dive into the ocean of dental health with fatty fish like salmon and mackerel. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, these fish bring antiinflammatory benefits to your gums, contributing to an overall healthy mouth. 5. Water Wonderland: No dental discussion is complete without a nod to water. Staying hydrated is fundamental to saliva production, your body’s natural defence against acidity and plaque buildup. Make water your beverage of choice for a refreshing, tooth-loving boost. The Not-So-Good: Navigating Dental Danger Zones 1. Sugary Sinners: While indulging in the occasional sweet treat is acceptable, excessive sugar consumption is a dental danger. Sugars are the fuel for bacteria, leading to acid production that erodes tooth enamel. Keep the sweets in check to preserve your pearly whites.

I

n our fast-paced lives, maintaining a radiant smile often takes a back seat. Yet, the key to dental well-being might just be on your plate. Embracing a diet rich in tooth-friendly foods not only enhances your overall health but also contributes to a brilliant smile that lasts a lifetime. The Good: A Feast for Healthy Teeth 1. Calcium Kingdom: Step into the calcium kingdom, where dairy delights reign supreme. Yoghourt, cheese, and milk aren’t just delicious; they’re packed with calcium, an essential mineral that fortifies teeth. Non-dairy options like leafy greens, almonds, and fortified plant-based milk alternatives provide equally robust support for dental health. 2. Crunchy Crusaders: Crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, and celery act as natural toothbrushes. Their crisp texture stimulates saliva production, washing away harmful acids and promoting a natural cleansing effect. A snack that’s both refreshing and tooth-friendly!

34

2. Acidic Adversaries: Certain acidic foods and drinks, such as citrus fruits and sodas, can weaken enamel over time. Moderation is key, and consider rinsing your mouth with water after consuming acidic delights to minimise their impact on your teeth. 3. Sticky Culprits: Sticky and chewy foods, from caramel to dried fruits, can cling to your teeth, creating a playground for bacteria. Enjoy these treats sparingly and be sure to follow up with a thorough oral hygiene routine. As you embark on this journey to nourish your teeth, remember that balance is the key. Relish the tooth-friendly wonders nature offers while being mindful of the dental dangers lurking in sugary and acidic realms. With a conscientious approach to both your diet and oral care routine, you’ll not only savour delicious flavours but also showcase a radiant, healthy smile that speaks volumes. Cheers to good food and even better oral health!

RANTS & RAVES

ALL TALK

I

was flabbergasted to find out that it’s been 24 years since Kota Kinabalu became a city. I remember it well, it was a big deal and I had hoped that positive changes would happen in our beloved city.

only deal with that one person because no one else can do his or her job. God forbid they get sick or go on holiday. It’s that sales person who automatically tells you that the item you want is not available but you find it in the next aisle when you search.

Throughout the years and 6 Mayors later, it may be hard to see all the changes as so much time has passed by but I’m sure if you tried, you’d be able to remember at least ONE!

It’s the general behaviour that it’s always someone else’s problem and there’s nothing you can do about it. Complaining perhaps but not directing the issue to the right authorities or suggesting a possible solution. The mentality of “bah, biar lah” or “apa boleh buat” is what irks me.

We place a lot of responsibility on the people who are in power and sometimes that means placing blame on them. Yes, it’s so easy to say the authorities haven’t done this or that and we complain, complain, complain. I have a major problem with people who ONLY like to fault others. Finding the problem is one thing but perhaps you could also suggest a solution or perhaps bring it to their attention? Just an idea people, channel that pent up, negative energy into something useful. My major issues in our state, I have made abundantly clear, if you’ve read my other articles. And if you haven’t, here’s the gist of it. I have issues with pollution, dirty toilets and our beautiful environment not being cared for. We have so much to offer here and I am very proud of being a Sabahan despite the many things that plague our city. What are these things that bother me so you may or may not ask? It’s the laid back attitude with everything and I mean everything. For example, in government offices where you can 36

If you’re one of the quiet ones and that just goes with the flow this isn’t directed at you, although you can make a difference. It’s to the others. If you can’t be the solution, DON’T be a part of the problem. Don’t lay blame when you don’t contribute to fixing the mess. You feel me? by Noor F.Z. Ali Image | Unsplash

The Big Apple: Why is New York So Popular

A

few cities have seen their fair share of the limelight every so often, but none compare to the Concrete Jungle, the Big Apple itself, New York City (NYC). Known for its popular landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and of course the Empire State Building, NYC has inspired the culture so much that it has been referenced in pop culture so many times. Located on the east coast of the USA, NYC is a melting pot of cultures, reflected in the cuisine, neighbourhoods, and festivals. Though that isn’t too surprising since 8.8 million people live there. With Ellis Island being a historic immigration station in NYC, millions of immigrants have passed through between 1892 and 1954. Sharing a border with Canada, you vould even visit the breathtaking Niagara Falls from NYC. NYC is also home to Wall Street, Broadway, Times Square. It’s also a big market for sports teams, where the New York Yankees and New York Knicks play their home games in Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden respectively. Some big name celebrities were born in NYC too. I’m sure you’ve heard of Robert De Niro, Scarlett Johansson, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, or Anne Hathaway, right?

POP CULTURE

Speaking of celebrities, countless films and TV shows have showcased the mesmerising skylines of NYC. “King Kong”, “Breakfast At Tiffany’s”, “Godzilla”, “Seinfeld”, “Friends” are just a handful of titles among the many examples. Spider-Man has swung through the city in times of trouble. NYC has even inspired so many songs including “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra and Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind”. It has even inspired Andy Warhol through the vibrant culture, while designers such as Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan have left their marks during New York’s Fashion Week. As you can see, New York City isn’t just a location, but an enduring character in pop culture. It certainly plays a leading role in the stories, music, and art that captivates the worldwide audience. by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash

am Bakes is a home baking business based in Kota Kinabalu founded by Carmen Jee. Before 3am Bakes, Carmen was a wedding planner and social media marketing freelancer. Back then, she would usually wrap up work and at the same time have her sweet tooth strike at around the 3am mark, and proceeded whipping something up at an ungodly hour. Thus, how she came up with the name 3am Bakes. Baking itself is something she has been doing since the age of 10. 3am Bakes grew a lot in popularity from just selling cheesecakes and brownies in the beginning. They specialise in bespoke cakes and desserts, from celebration cakes to dessert and grazing bars for weddings, corporate and private events, to festive gifts and favours. Business is good with about 20 to 50 orders per week, depending on the time of the year. Orders have to be made in advance from 2-3 days for standard cakes, 4-7 days for custom cakes, and up to 12 months for weddings.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

ast year saw the rise of Jesselton Quay, a new commercial center in Kota Kinabalu, best known for latest food and beverage outlets which are fast gaining popularity. One of them is Under The Clouds Cafe, which is run by Aszuad Zakaria and his mother-in-law, Datin Armah Aman. Upon entering the premises, we can’t help noticing its unique interior that gives out a bright and bubbly vibe with a chill ambience. It is also quite spacious with an upper level perfect for families and bigger friend groups. Since its opening in December 2022, the cafe has been enjoying a good attendance of local and foreign customers. Let’s now talk about the obvious. With customers constantly coming to the cafe, they love the food & beverage served accompanied by a bunch of good reviews. With that said, the Breeze team was pretty excited to sample the cafe’s menu items. We started our tasting session with their Spaghetti Carbonara Seafood. The dish already looked mouthwatering itself with the fresh clams and prawns on it. On the first bite, we can already taste the savory carbonara sauce that has a hint of seafood. We also love the garlic bread that comes along with the dish, toasted nicely and not too heavy on garlic. If you love pasta, you will love the Spaghetti Carbonara Seafood. UNDER THE CLOUDS CAFE: A TRUE UNDER THE CLOUDS EXPERIENCE

each other to give the dish a delicious taste. And of course, Bihun Goreng Singapore tastes better with its side of cut chillies in soy sauce for that added spicy kick. The Breeze team also got to try some of their popular chicken dishes. Their yummy signature Rosemary Roasted Chicken Herbs is pretty juicy. It comes along with mashed potatoes topped with light and smooth black pepper gravy and salad. Another thumbs up dish. Then there is Ayam Gepuk Under The Clouds, a dish consisting of fried chicken thigh, rice topped with kerisik, cabbage fried with caramelized onions, and deep fried tempeh and tofu. Under The Clouds Cafe again proves that they have impressive chicken dishes as we discovered the chicken for this dish is surprisingly soft, and seasoned perfectly. We finished up our tasting session with a bunch of tantalizing homemade pastries. Cupcakes, Rainbow Jelly Cake, Choco Fondant paired with vanilla ice cream, and Pavlova, all proved to be bound favorites for lesser lovers. Colorful and attractive, yet luscious. If we had to pick the best out of the bunch, Choco Fondant would be it, that has just the right sweetness while indulging soft chocolate oozing out from its crispy outer shell. We also discovered the owners of the cafe have been in the food & beverage industry for over 10 years. With that said, they are quite particular when it comes to the quality of their menu items and making sure their customers have a good experience. By the way, the cafe can also be booked for private functions.
