Mr Low and the Magic of Borneo
W
hen I was suggested to do a children’s book review from Borneo Legends, I got so excited and immediately said yes! And what excites me more was that you could actually get a hardcopy of the book instead of just an e-book! Who doesn’t love the smell of new books?
in the story. So much thought was put into each character and their personalities that helped me imagine each character in detail while reading. I also learned about the mythical creature called Gayo Nakan that was buried at the top of Mount Kinabalu. How awesome is that!
First published in April 2020, Mr Low and the Magic of Borneo follows a little girl Bibi and her fellow animal guide Diti in an adventure to help a man on his mission to honor his queen but things are really not as it seems. Bestowed with a special ability, Bibi and Diti went on a quest to seek out Gayo Nakan in order to bring peace not only to Mr Low but also the villagers. Upon reading the first few pages, you will be swept into the beauty of nature in Borneo and as you turn the pages, the elements of magic and adventure will constantly fill you, and your kids of course, with wonder.
Borneo Legends actually started this year but Mr Low and the Magic of Borneo’s digital copy was actually released online prior to the first MCO. They also have a few more books lined up and you can get more info at their website www.borneolegends.com. The book is also available for purchase either from their website, email or contacting the number provided directly and Borneo Legends ships all over Malaysia.
Suitable for children aged 8 and above, this book is inspired by historical incidents and characters. It tells of a local legend that many might not know about. Written and illustrated by the author herself, she mentioned that some of the drawings were actually based on the real location itself. Dee Char, Malaysian born and having a tribal heritage created her very first book, Mr Low and the Magic of Borneo in hopes to introduce and educate children about legends of SouthEast Asia in a more fun and engaging way. What caught my attention first when I read the book was the little illustrations of Bibi, her friends and the main characters involved

providing hope to a community Safety The community’s public safety and accessibility is the number 1 concern of HOPES as they need to provide safe conditions of the facilities for the entire community, especially the children. Since the 2015 earthquake, a 100m hanging bridge was the only access into the village and connects hundreds of villagers and school children to other villages and the town. The rundown bridge has been repaired as the wooden planks and wire mesh have been replaced.
education The education and empowerment of the community is important as to equip farmers to diversify their crop from low value staple food to higher value commodities. The lack of long term strategy and resource planning, coupled with the lack of access to knowledge about market demandable agricultural commodities has led to many rural farmers quitting agriculture. HOPES has encouraged these farmers to use organic farming methods and diversify their crops. This has resulted in higher value of crops produced.

H
opes Malaysia is a growing organization that focuses on community development projects to help meet the basic necessities of the underprivileged rural communities of Malaysia. Working hard to keep close engagement with the communities, they are now more than ever focused on “Sustainable Development”. HOPES is leading them to become self-sustainable communities in the long term, not only to support themselves but also to improve their socioeconomic status and quality of life as well. HOPES’ vision is to break the cycle of poverty. Their belief of pursuing and contributing to a more sustainable work in the community will lead to a meaningful long term change. The 3 most important components to HOPES’ operation are “Sustainability + Impact + Practicality”, and they hold firm to these components. One of HOPES’ projects in 2020 was the Sustainable Livelihoods Project 2020. They selected 3 villages in Kota Belud, Sabah to deepen their social impact. Via the project, HOPES planned to achieve five community development goals for the villages. The project is a long running program which targeted more than 50 households of rural farmers, aiming to improve their living conditions and break the poverty chain for the generations to come. The five development plans are:
10
HOPES is encouraging farmers to opt for environmentally sustainable farming to ensure the production of consistent and high quality crops. Planting the same crops repeatedly will reduce the nutrients from the soil and leave it weak. This causes poor soil quality, forcing the use of fertilizers. The fertilizers will pollute the groundwater, increasing crop diseases and pests while affecting produce quality. So, with the introduction of sustainable farming, naturally fertilized soil improves the planting environment and prevents soil degradation, yielding better crops in the future.
food To expand and diversify the variety of crops and poultry for self consumption to achieve balance in intake of nutrients, especially children. The communities face limited food varieties and an imbalance of the nutrients they take in. Therefore, increasing the type of crops and poultry have led to better diets, physical, and mental developments, especially in children.
Together with her husband, Ms. Rukinah for example has established a mini farm from scratch. Taking advantage of the gravity water system of the village, her farm houses crops such as bok choy, brinjal, and red okra. Her crops are freshly harvested to provide for her family of five, especially her three primary-school children.
socioeconomic This development plan is aimed to strategize ways to improve small scale farmers’ household incomes sustainably. Among the problems the farmers face are the instability of agricultural production, inaccessibility of transportation in rural areas, and the presence of middlemen in the supply chain. The stagnant and low income versus high living costs have also affected the farmers. HOPES deals with these problems to diversify the crop variety, cut the middleman out from the supply chain, set a fixed rate of the yield to prevent fluctuation, and continue to expand the city demands. This has resulted in the increase of more than 50% of current household incomes, support for future generations for better education, and provided a better living space and environmental sanitation. From these development plans, many community members have improved their livelihoods.
HOPES has also established Tamu Kita, a local social enterprise platform that helps the aforementioned communities economically. Through Tamu Kita, HOPES is able to promote and distribute the villagers’ hard work to Kota Kinabalu. You can support the farmers by visiting and making purchases at www.hopesmalaysia.com/tamukita. Your support will aid in the local economy and increase the villagers’ source of income. Let’s help break the cycle of poverty by contributing towards Tamu Kita and the hard work of the farmers.

Naufarah Yasin’s Rentan
N
aufarah Yasin has recently released her new single titled Rentan. The single is a first for the Kota Kinabalu native, as it’s her first rock single in her illustrious career. Naufarah comes from a musical family, being the older sister of Pija Mentor, Khenobu, and One Juicy. She has always wowed fans with her talent as she was a former Artist RTM and Artist Terbaru Terbaik Aim 2006 (Best New Artist) nominee. Naufarah was also part of Kayu Band and The 15, Malaysia’s representatives for Asia’s Got Talent 2019. Now, she’s looking to captivate her fans once more with a brand new style.
MUSIC
this year if all goes well. “To all musicians and singers, let’s continue to make good music. I hope this song is able to inspire you to give it your all. Don’t give up, the show must go on,” said Naufarah. Appreciating everyone who has supported her, Naufarah is grateful especially to her family, mom and dad, brother, sisters, bandmates, and fans. If you haven’t, check out Rentan on Spotify, Joox, Apple Music, and on other digital music streaming platforms. The music video is also available on the Khaliff Production YouTube channel.
Rentan was composed by Naufarah and Zulkhaliff, with the lyrics being written by Athila D’Hun, and produced by Khaliff Productions. Apart from Naufarah herself, the single also features Sabahan artists such as Belinda James, Juergen Jekulon, and Kaynizam Maskor. Naufarah, Khaliff, and Athila were inspired by a theatre performance called Chiaroscuro Theatre in Kelantan. Once the inspiration came, it took them no time to arrange the chords, melody, and lyrics of the song. Rentan details a one sided love story, where a woman gives her full devotion while the man is only in the relationship for revenge, power, and betrayal. The single was never planned to be a rock song. Naufarah recalls none of the music Khaliff drafted as arrangements were satisfying to hear. Once they decided a rock track would suit her vocal range, they immediately took to the studio and started recording. With that said, Naufarah plans to explore many more genres of music that would suit her vocal ranges. She believes genre is subjective and any singer has the right to venture into any genre to improve their repertoire, skills, and knowledge in music. Rentan is only the first track that Naufarah plans to release. However, prior to Rentan, she has released “Ku Bukan Seperti Dulu”, “Gelisah”, and “Bila Hari Raya”. She has more songs baking in the oven and is optimistic on sharing at least one more single

CryptoCurrency saves the turtles
ECO NEWS
a collaboration with the Sabah Wildlife Department, FOSTER has signed a Memorandum of Understanding and set up a turtle conservation program on said island. AquaGoat Finance is an ecosystem that utilizes the AquaGoat ecocoin (cryptocurrency). It is looking to help keep all waterways and oceans clean through charitable partnerships. Members of the ecosystem earn interest from the network activity, all while benefiting the environment. If you want more information or want to make a difference for our beaches, don’t hesitate to email fosterseaturtle@gmail.com.
I
t’s disheartening that not many people know sea turtles actually lay their eggs on our beaches. Unfortunately, I was one of those people. However, it’s great to find out our beaches are able to accommodate the needs of sea turtles, and that wouldn’t be possible if I didn’t discover Friends Of Sea Turtles Education & Research (FOSTER). FOSTER recently received a big boost as they secured a sponsorship from AquaGoat Finance. A total of RM10,000 was donated. From that sum, RM4,000 will be used for the construction of a new turtle hatchery called “AquaGoat Sea Turtle Hatchery” on Libaran Island. The remaining RM6,000 will be used for an adoption programme by the island’s community, whereby they will clean the beach for one year. The president of FOSTER, Alexander Yee, has self funded the sea turtle conservation work on the island for the past six years before receipts of activities from tourism were able to fund the work and make it self-sustainable. However, the Covid-19 pandemic that caused international border closure has resulted in the decrease and absence of visitors to the island. “I was not prepared to stop the work on Libaran Island so I started to source for funds abroad and obtain the sponsorship collaboration”, said Alexander. Jhunehl Fortaleza, AquaGoat Finance’s charity and outreach coordinator said this was the first initiative of its kind for them and the first in this summer. FOSTER is based on Libaran Island just off the coast of Sandakan. Their main objectives are to protect endangered sea turtles and educate the public regarding the turtles. They operate a sea turtle hatchery on Libaran Island and are creating awareness on the challenges the sea turtles face towards their survival. Through

Honda's upgrades for the civic and city
W
ho would’ve known that two of Honda’s most popular models are almost 50 years old. I’m talking about the Civic and the City, which are turning 49 and 40 respectively this year. The next generation of both these models are coming soon and it’s interesting to see what Honda has changed to keep these two popular models looking fresh. Introduced in July 1972, the Honda Civic will celebrate its 49th anniversary this month. What started out as a small hatchback marketed for the budget conscious family, has now become a car culture phenomenon. It has evolved through the years, and this year, Honda opted for a more distinct yet less aggressive look. The bold yet clean design is paired with the 180-hp turbocharged engine (EX & Touring trim), creating a powerful look for an exciting and fun family sedan. Honda has also made sure this Civic is able to give a nimble transmission while providing a sportier handling. This year’s Civic won’t be complete without the latest tech from Honda to provide a safe, seamless, and exciting experience, whether you’re driving or not. As for the Honda City, what came from a small compact city hatchback has now become a reliable vehicle in the subcompact car market. While most will think of a sedan when they hear Honda City, this year, the City will go back to its roots. A hatchback version will be released soon and it’s an exciting

model to behold. Sharing a similar look, frontend wise to its bigger sedan brother, the 5-door hatchback will certainly turn heads when it hits the road. The major difference between the two is the implementation of the Ultra Seats in the hatchback. This allows for four-seat arrangements and more legroom. Although having a smaller 1.0L engine, it is turbocharged and offers slight increase in torque and horsepower with 173Nm and 120hp compared to the sedan’s 145Nm and 119hp. Pair this with all the safety and comfort features, you’ll get a car that has a lot of potential. Personally, I’m really excited for these two models to be refreshed. I can’t wait to see what Honda has to offer for the nextgen Type-R. Another thing that’s cool to think about is the ability of storing a small bike in the back of the City Hatchback with the Ultra Seats, just like how the original City was able to do so.

New ventures during the pandemic
T
he pandemic we’re facing currently has certainly brought gloom to many. Hope for things getting better in the future may not be on a high note. However, there is always a silver lining to any situation and we should never lose hope. This is what our personalities have proven to the people around them: opportunities can still arise during tough times.
Nancy Peter
Founder of Hijau Hijau Garden
Before the pandemic, Nancy from Kinarut used to develop her own handmade skincare brand called Borneo Cocoa Skincare. When the pandemic came around, she had to slow down the skincare business and turned to gardening for leisure and learning new things. At first, Nancy and her kids focused on planting peppermint. Later they realised they could sell pots of peppermint to family and friends, and started to market on Facebook. That was how Hijau Hijau Garden was born. As the business got more popular, they started planting more types of herbs from requests made by customers. Rosemary, thyme, peppermint and oregano are among the popular herbs they sell. Nancy still faces challenges though in terms of high delivery costs and restricted travel rules. Other than that, business was still good. Nancy’s advice to others who want to start a business: “Do not give up. If you manage to survive now, you’ll be able to face anything.” Hijau Hijau Garden

Landy & Sherilyn
Founders of Mask Culture
During this pandemic, it’s sometimes difficult to find fabric masks that would match outfits. They would either be too expensive or are sold out. This was what inspired Mask Culture. It was established by accountants Landy & Sherilyn from Kota Kinabalu. Their first product was their designer 3-ply fabric mask, but in time, they began selling headband & mask sets as they noticed some people having a hard time looping their masks over their ears. The headbands come with buttons for people to loop the masks over them. The headband & mask set eventually became their best selling item. Mask Culture’s masks come in different fabrics - cotton, satin, and polyester. Design wise, many customers have bought their seasonal batik collection. They also sell sanitisers that have basic ingredients and are odourless. For Landy & Sherilyn, the biggest challenge in their business was the delivery of the products. They would also have a tough time communicating as Landy is often out of Kota Kinabalu. However, no matter how tough the challenges are, they managed to overcome them despite running the business with their day jobs. Landy & Sherilyn’s advice to others who want to start a business: “There is always a way to overcome challenges. If you’re thinking of starting a business now, just do it. The first step is to start.” @maskculturemy
Emery Joy

Founder of Sunduan Studio
Prior to the pandemic, born and based in Kota Kinabalu, Emery Joy had a hunger for creativity and started to fiddle with resins. So when the pandemic came, she used the extra time on her hands to harness her skills in making accessories and jewellery from resins. Such skills were then put to use with her own business called Sunduan Studio in July 2020. The main product of Sunduan Studio for now is earrings but there will be more types of jewellery to be introduced in the future. As Emery’s collection changes monthly, she rarely has repeats in the designs. Currently, most people gravitate towards the tiny stud earrings in the Brighter Days collection. The biggest challenge Emery faces is being a one-man show. From producing the products, to photo taking and marketing, she does it all herself. It has been tough balancing her time, but she has managed to do it while working as a kindergarten teacher as well. Emery’s advice to others who want to start a business: “Focus on your vision and goal. Then manifest them as you keep pressing on.” @sunduanstudio

SELF-CARE DURING THE PANDEMIC
t’s been over a year since the pandemic hit us. With the new norm, it’s definitely not what everyone had in mind for their New Year’s resolutions in 2020 and 2021. On a hopeful note, vaccinations are under way and what is more important now is to practice self-care. Mental health has been an ongoing topic these days as we still face difficulty in loving ourselves despite current situations that allow us to appreciate more alone time and even family time for some. Here are some tips to take each day at a time and remain hopeful during these uncertain times. REALITY CHECK It may have been a steep fall, with business failures, retrenchments, or even losing someone you love dearly. We must acknowledge that life is going to be hard. To a certain extent, facing the ugly truth and acknowledging the reality will not only help you look at things more positively but also help you figure out ways to overcome these challenges. Of course, #kitajagakita works; but you have to start with yourself first. APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS You’re blessed if you still have your family, your job, and even food on the table. Appreciation is so simple, yet so hard to practice. We indirectly do this daily, but seldom practice gratitude intentionally because in most cases, we compare ourselves to those who are in a better situation. Of course, ‘I want to be like him’ aspirations are great goal-setting figures, but reality sinks in, and sometimes – you just need to put certain things on hold and prioritize the current situation. That RM50 sale order you made today, that stranger that helped you open the door, that boba drink your colleagues surprised you with after a long day of work. Those little things.

GET TO KNOW YOURSELF Often times we don’t even know what we want in our lives. This is a great time for reflections and getting to know yourself better - things you enjoy, your dream life, what do you need to do to get there, what keeps you motivated, etc. No, not telling you to create another resolution. Instead, try some personality tests or spend some time doing new things and see if you enjoy it. PRACTICE AND DO WHAT YOU WANT Take that long Annual Leave break to rest or just to binge and sleep at home, go out and buy some flowers that look pretty on Instagram for yourself, eat chocolates and buy that console you’ve always wanted. With all that we have seen from the pandemic, I’m sure a lot of us realize that life is uncertain, and sometimes can be too short. Make the best of it, and nobody should ever judge you for whatever makes you happy. Practice that self-love and self-care and love yourself more in all that you do. GET IT OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM And finally, one of the core solutions to destress a bad day - is to just rant it out or express it to someone who would listen and be there for you. Work-From-Home sometimes can be just as stressful as working in the office. Sometimes, we get that deep lonely feeling and worry that it would snowball into anxiety and depression – keeping negative feelings to ourselves, is exactly the core problem we all face today. Whatever the reasons may be, just let it out of your system. Cry it out. Share it with a friend. Ask for advice. Let your family know. Write it all down. Try it and you will feel lighter. Life is all about choices – we get to choose what we think about, and what we do to change it. Of course, it is ridiculous to tell anyone to maintain sunshine and rainbow positivity all day. But as we take small steps towards better days, the rainbow of hope will be a step closer. Live every day the best you can, and don’t be too hard on yourself, because it’s all we can do to live life.

Emslimsculpt is an FDA-approved body contouring treatment that simultaneously burns fat and builds muscle for the abdomen. It is also the only FDA-approved non-surgical butt lift. Emslimsculpt uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) to trigger supramaximal contractions (the type that cannot be achieved by voluntary muscle action). The strengthening of these muscles can help reduce the risk of lower back pain, poor posture, & overall body fatigue. In some women, Emslimsculpt has also shown to improve diastasis recti, a condition of abdominal muscle weakening and separation from pregnancy.

Don’t Brush Off The Toothbrush
T
oothbrushes are an essential part of the daily routine. Whether it’s in the morning, night, or anything in between, I’m sure all of us own and use one everyday. However, what is the most important criteria when choosing a toothbrush? Well, Dr. Sylvia of Phi Dental has just the advice when it comes to that and more as we discuss toothbrushes.
been considered the best because the individual filaments of the floss typically clean more effectively compared to waxed floss where the filaments are bound together. Plus, depending on the space between your teeth, you can either choose thinner floss for tighter gaps or thicker floss for bigger gaps. Flossing picks can also be considered if you feel you’re not very dextile.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way. Toothbrushes are oral hygiene instruments used to clean teeth, gums, and the tongue. We’ve always been taught to brush at least twice a day and that still rings true to this day. Of course, toothbrushes should be used with toothpaste, but Dr. Sylvia also advises flossing once a day to better take care of our teeth change ‘to take a better care of our teeth’. Dental floss is a thin chord of filament used to remove food and dental plaque between our teeth.
The world oral care market in 2020 is valued at $53 million US Dollars and is expected to increase to $96 million in 2031. Today, there are too many new products designed and advertised for better oral care. However, more expensive doesn’t always mean they’re better or will even meet your dental needs. As wise consumers, we should always judge these products logically based on our own needs and science before making a purchase. Nevertheless, you can always consult your dentist if you ever have difficulty choosing a toothbrush or floss that suits you best.
So, what do you have to look out for when choosing new toothbrushes? The two most important criterias are the bristles and the toothbrush head size. Always look for soft bristles as they are soft and gentle for our teeth and gums. We don’t realise it but we often brush too hard and the soft bristles ensure the teeth and gums won’t get damaged. Secondly, smaller toothbrush head sizes help a lot as they would be easier to maneuver in and around tight spots. Compact toothbrush heads also allow you to brush into the crevices between teeth a lot better. However, flossing does a better job reaching and cleaning those tight spaces between your teeth. Picking an unwaxed floss has

Don’t draw what you think is there, draw what really is. Take your time, and try to do it every day.
Well my friends, you have a gift. The pandemic. Yes really. You are not allowed to go out and do the time-consuming things you always blame for gobbling up your life. Your conscience is clear. You have carte blanche to lie about all day, or read books till your eyes cross, or – well, or do something that nurtures your soul.
Or paint. There is a wonderful set of YouTube videos by Alex Tsavaras, a figurative painter who explains everything you need to know about colour, shadow, equipment etc. Worth a look. And if you can’t go shopping for kit, the internet can supply you with all the kit you need – nothing much to start with, although be warned, once the bug bites, you will want to try and try and try.
h, I would if I had the time’, I know you’ve said. Don’t deny it. I’ve done it too! Or ‘When I was at school I was really good at…’. Or ‘Rush rush rush – if I wasn’t working/stuck at home I’ve always wanted to…’
If you have a garden, get out there. Wear a hat, slap on the suncream, and don’t be too fussy about a little mud on your hands – there are always gloves, come to think of it, so no excuse there either. Trim the edges of your beds, remove all those weeds and get the place in shape. There is plenty on the internet to help you – just do a bit of digging (see what happened there?) and soon your plants will thrive and you will be happy. Doesn’t matter the size of your space. Use plants as a screen, or use an archway or a space in a hedge to suggest vast acres even if you only have a few feet. And if you only have a balcony, lucky you. Much less work. Buy some containers and some good compost, and get planting. Flowers, leaves or even veg – your choice. I like planting smaller plants in tin cans, with holes in the bottom to allow drainage: tomato plants can get started in these and look great in an old Italian tomato tin… Beg plants and cuttings from your friends – but don’t be a horticultural thug and steal them from parks or private land. Inside there is blessed cool, so set up a small table in a quiet corner if you have one, and think about doing some drawing.
Something to remember. This is for you. YOU. You don’t have to do anything to show other people. So you can play, and try things out. You don’t have to stick with traditional figurative stuff. Splash colour about and have fun with your pencil. Look around on the internet for inspiration – you may want to knit, or to crochet, or to weave. Or even to improve your baking, or learn Italian dishes. Flower arranging could work – real or silk flowers look beautiful in their different ways. Look around your house, and think about how to make it more beautiful. With lovely fabrics, or gauzy curtains to shield you from the sun but let the light in. Again the internet is your friend. Check out Houzz – that has lots of ideas. You may want to build a shed. To work on a verandah and then to make it pretty with plants (see above). You may want to broaden the mind. Try the array of free courses on www.coursera.org. Also for free or for reasonable prices, there’s www.domestika.org and you have all you could ever want to try. It’s all out there, and it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Use this gift of time to have fun, to learn or to play.

HELP YOURSELF AND OTHERS
Rants & Raves
R
emember when we all thought the pandemic would be over in 2 weeks back in 2020? Well, now we are zooming past the middle of 2021! Crazy right! With MCOs extending every 2 weeks, it seems to be a never-ending cycle. While some areas are still free to move around whenever they please, others are stuck at home or in their small town. To help, many people are finding ways to support those that are in need. For example, there has been a movement going around that if you need any help with food or amenities at home, all you need to do is hang a white flag outside your house! With the KamiCare helpline, you can also contact them if you need any help with daily necessities. With rising cases of Covid again, please remember to practice social distancing whenever you leave your house. Stay away from crowded areas and if it isn’t completely necessary, try not to leave your house too! With vaccinations also going around, we are all hoping that it can help bring down our cases soon. As with the MCO, comes isolation for some. If you are feeling down, or not feeling well, do make sure to contact family members or friends. It’s also a good idea to check in on some of your friends that may be stuck in EMCO areas. With that said, there are also many food banks going around and the best place to check out where they all are is on social media! Whether on Facebook or Instagram, many people are posting about where you can find help in these trying times. If you see anybody trying to help, do help spread the news so it can reach more people in need!

POP CULTURE
The timeless Arsene Lupin
I
n early 2021, Netflix released a series that has caught a lot of people’s interests. So far this year, Lupin has been the most popular show on the streaming service. But, how would it come to be and who even is Lupin?
on Netflix in the United States, reaching number 3 in January 2021. An estimated 70 million households tuned in to the show in its first month and became the most watched title in the first quarter of 2021.
Arsene Lupin (pronounced Loo-Pan) is a fictional character created by French writer Maurice Leblanc. Originally called Lopan in 1905, the name was subsequently changed as a French politician of the same name protested it. Why? Because the character was actually made to be a gentleman thief, a force of good operating on the wrong side of the law. More or less what we call anti-heroes nowadays. Lupin was first introduced in a series of short stories in the magazine “Je sais tout”. Featured in 17 novels and 39 novellas by Leblanc, these were all collected and formed a total of 24 books.
Lupin also appeared in the Japanese manga and anime in the form of Lupin The III, which follows the adventure of Arsene Lupin’s grandson. In video games, Lupin makes a cameo in the popular Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal games.
I couldn’t find any information on how many of Leblanc’s works that featured Lupin were actually sold. Although, I did find a recent listing on Amazon on what might be a reprint of ‘Arsene Lupin, Gentlemen Thief ’, which features the first eight stories depicting the character. It ranks number 8993 in the “Best Sellers” while ranking number 47 for “Mystery Anthologies”. Not bad for a character that has existed for more than a hundred years, taken with a grain of salt that is. Arsene Lupin has also appeared in many other books and other types of media. As mentioned, Netflix released a show inspired by the character. Starring Omar Sy as the protagonist Assane Diop, it follows Diop’s story of seeking to avenge his father's death. The show became the first French series to rank top 10
by Noel Jinguli Image | Various Sources 30
Maurice Leblanc was ahead of his time when he came up with the character. Arsene Lupin has proven to everyone that it is, and always will be, a timeless character. Based on the various inspirations and appearances in all sorts of media, that is one fact we surely can’t deny.

ocal favourites with a twist. That is what differentiates Chindul Bungsu to the others. What started out as a blessing in disguise has blossomed into a breath of fresh air in the F&B business. After a positive reaction to their cendol business, the sibling trio founders decided to make it easier for customers to enjoy their desserts and founded Chindul Bungsu. They specialise in making local favourite desserts, such as cendol, for the on-the-go individual. Think of it this way. Imagine having a boba drink but instead of boba, you’re enjoying cendol instead. They also serve ice blended drinks based on kopitiam favourites like Milo, Horlicks, and Nescafe. The most popular item on the menu? Of course it’s their signature Cendol Susu and Chindul Shake. The Cendol Susu is rich and creamy. You can definitely taste each ingredient they put into the drink. If you’re really into “chewing” your drinks, chewing on the cendol is certainly a different yet familiar experience. Another local favourite that’s been “Chindul-fied” is the ABC. The sweetness is balanced out by the subtle sourness of the jelly used. Surprisingly, it was almost as if enjoying a creamy frozen yogurt. Other flavours that you should definitely try are the MilOreo and Horlicks & Cookies, giving cookies and cream a whole different twist. Chindul Bungsu is available for orders through food delivery services such as GrabFood and FoodPanda. Contact: 016-585 4625 Image | Chindul Bungsu @chindulbungsu

The main attraction of Jon’s Recipes is their made-to-order soft cookies. Choose from a myriad of freshly baked flavours like Belgium Dark Chocolate or the extra-large Lotus Biscoff. For a more savoury dish, their Sarawak Laksa is a must try. The balance of heat from the laksa paste compliments the aromatic herbs and subtle hints of sour-ish chili notes. The thick broth is accompanied by rice vermicelli, shredded chicken, and large succulent prawns that will certainly hit the spot. Their Aussie Beef Bolognese, Prawn Burger and Midnight Brownies are also must-tries. Keep in mind though, you need to preorder the cookies and brownies at least 2 hours in advance. Casual and authentic Japanese food is best enjoyed when you’re relaxed. What better way to relax than kicking back at home and enjoying the best Japanese dishes from Izakaya Ebizou. Akin to Malaysia’s satay, their Yakitori consists of skewed meat or vegetables that are typically grilled. The Salted Pork Belly Teriyaki and Salted Thigh Teriyaki offer a savoury choice for a very light meal. For a heavier meal, try out the Tonkatsu Set of pork cutlet with rice. Coated in panko breadcrumbs, it’s served with hot yellow mustard and a thick, sweet, and tangy tonkatsu sauce. Lastly, cleanse your palate with some Oden, the soul-food from Japan. The key to an oden’s success is the broth. So, it doesn’t matter if you try the radish oden or the fried tofu oden, you’re sure to get a wholesome and filling meal. Available for: SERVE PORK
