PROTECTING YOUR BRAND INTERNATIONALLY
The Madrid System is a one-stop solution for registering and managing trademarks worldwide. The Madrid System for the international registration of trademarks allows brand owners to apply and maintain protection in the different member states of the system via one single procedure, in one language and one set of fee. On 27 September 2019, Malaysia joined the Madrid Protocol and Starting from December 27th, 2019 local brand owners in Malaysia can begin using the Madrid System to protect their marks in more than 121 territories of the System’s members by filing a single international application and paying a single set of fees. With its straightforward designation process, foreign companies and trademark owners can, from December 2019, seek trademark protection through the Madrid System when selling their products and services in Malaysia.

WHY REGISTERING YOUR TRADEMARK INTERNATIONALLY?
However, this was not an easy feat as good quality and largesized conferences require a proper convention centre. Datuk Hajah Rosmawati, who was then attached with Yayasan Sabah and her team conducted a study and concluded that Sabah has the potential to be one of the best MICE destinations because of its strategic location and Sabah also offers a wide range of experiences from the mountain high to the ocean deep - natural world and the unique cultural and traditions of the locals.
Sabah International Convention Centre was completed in 2020.
One of SICC’s prominent feature is the 6,954sqm outdoor plaza that is connected to the main lobby. Offering a spectacular view of the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park as well as the famous Kota Kinabalu sunset, the open space can accommodate up to 7,000 guests at one time. The idea of a convention centre in Kota Kinabalu was unheard off back in the day. According to the Chief Executive Officer of SICC Datuk Hajah Rosmawati Haji Lasuki, the idea sparked with the success of the 1st International CEO Conference organised by Yayasan Sabah in 2004 in one of the 5-star resorts in the city. The event was attended by 650 participants including from the US and UK, and has successfully put Sabah on the world investment map and brought in high-end tourists to the Withstate. the success of the 1st International CEO Conference, the Sabah government decided to include the CEO Conference in its calendar of events, appointing Yayasan Sabah to organise the conference every bi-annually. S
Between 2006 to 2012, Datuk Hajah Rosmawati with full determination submitted and presented her proposals to the government at that time. SICC received the approval and financial support they needed from the federal as well as the state government to proceed with the construction in 2015.
SICC first opened its door to the public in February 2020 with a six-day national level Tilawah Al-Quran 1441H/2020M where the Convention Centre was bustling with participants and guests from all over the country. Unfortunately, SICC started its operations in the beginning of Covid-19 pandemic where businesses had to adopt to the new norms. The unprecedented situation however did not deter abah International Convention Centre is the only convention centre in Malaysia that is located both by the sea and in the city with many international hotel of different categories within the vicinity. Owned by Innoprise Corporation Sdn Bhd – a subsidiary of Yayasan Sabah Group, the convention centre is built on a 6-hectare site with a 60,514sqm gross built-up. The 153,197sqm multi-functional complex has a well-designed floor plan with extensive pre-function areas. SICC features five levels of well-designed event spaces. The 5,196sqm convention hall and 5,176sqm exhibition hall are divisible into three smaller sections and can accommodate 3,270 guests and 3,000 guests respectively. There are also multiple meeting room of various sizes as well as private VVIP rooms and lounges, all named after Sabah’s popular natural destinations.

When the SOPs were relaxed and dine in was allowed, they opened a makeshift restaurant at the lobby of Level 3 in July 2020. Making full use of their manpower and space, as well as inculcating teamwork and multitasking, SICC introduced the Ramadan Buffet, offering 700 variety of dishes in 2021, the first in the city. The objective of the buffet was simple – to provide a space for people to gather during the difficult times, sharing delicious meals with their family and friends while emphasising on safety and health for their guests.

BERPUTAR ROAD TO CLAS2022 by Aldean Image | Aween Shaffienas
ne of the most watched groups ever to come out of New Zealand, Drax Project have gone from 4-piece buskers to Pop RnB arena fillers.
21 music
On July 8th, New Zealand’s slickest live band recently celebrated the release of their first EP in 4 years - Diamond.
Drax Project - DIAMOND
“It’s been a pretty weird last couple of years for everyone! From a health standpoint, we’ve been extremely lucky to be in New Zealand – especially early in the pandemic, when we got to play stadiums while the rest of the world was in lockdown – but it also meant being a long way away from a lot of our audience. Focusing more on recording than releasing has made sense. With New Zealand now opening up to the world again, it feels like the right time to start letting out more of the music we’ve been working on” – Drax Project Diamond EP by Drax Project is available on all music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and more. For further information, find Drax Project on: Instagram, Facebook & Tiktok: @draxproject Spotify: Drax Project Image | Drax Project
Beginning as jazz students busking on the streets of Wellington New Zealand, Drax Project which consists of Shaan Singh (lead vocals, sax, keys), Matt Beachen (drums), Sam Thomson (bass, keys, BVs) and Ben O’Leary (Guitar, keys, BVs), have grown into one of the most successful groups ever to come out of the country. Through their own headline tours, international festival performances and opening for the likes of Ed Sheeran, Christina Aguilera, Lorde, Brian McKnight and Camila Cabello, the band have established themselves as one of the world’s emerging ‘must see’ live acts.
“Drax Project have gone from street side performers to supporting the biggest names in pop, including Camila Cabello, Ed Sheeran and Lorde.” - Rolling Stone
O Neo-soul group Phony Ppl joined their fellow New Zealanders Six60 on a new version of Drax’s hit “Catching Feelings” - which sat for months in the US RnB radio top 40. They now have more platinum records in Australia than any other band ever to come out of New Zealand. Singles off the self-titled debut (300/ Universal) album have collected nearly half a billion streams worldwide and 24 Platinum certifications to date, with “Woke Up Late” recently hitting the 500k unit threshold for US gold. They’ve also amassed the largest Tiktok following of any major NZ music artist. These numbers only look set to grow upon the release of Diamond and a new studio album scheduled for late this year.
The last two years have been a reset for everyone, Drax Project included. For this EP, they’ve eased back into releasing bodies of music with a collection of songs they love to play live. Diamond features studio versions of fan favourites ‘Hollywood’, ‘Fashion Sense’ and ‘Love In The Morning’ alongside recent singles ‘Crazy’ and ‘Mad At You’. Production duties across the EP are shared between Grammy nominees Grey and Rogét Chahayed, along with Drax themselves. The record is mixed by Grammy winning engineer Tom Norris. While they have been fairly quiet on the new release front since 2020, they’ve also been quietly collecting Ws. Hot New York
So, why choose an indoor golf simulator over golfing outdoors. Well, the biggest factor is the weather. If it’s too hot or raining heavily, why would you want to play outdoors? Another positive is the accurate stats you’ll be getting from the launch monitor. You or a professional coach can use the stats to further improve your techniques when you know what’s missing from your game.
U by Noel Jinguli Image | Shankjunkies with a golf simulator. If you ask any golfer, seeing the ball physically fly, instead of just flying into a screen, is just one of the best experiences in golf ever. Still, you should definitely check out Shank Junkies if you’ve never tried golfing indoors, or in general, as they provide the best indoor golfing facilities in Kota Kinabalu.
ntil recently, I never knew that golf was such an exciting sport to not only watch but also participate in. My sudden curiosity to try it out has now turned to an addiction to become better at the sport. However, being the geek that I am, I’m not able to accurately track the stats that drive my golfing addiction. This is where Shank Junkies and the GC3 golf launch monitor come in. Shank Junkies is the first to offer an indoor golfing experience with the GC3 launch monitor and simulator in Kota Kinabalu. A launch monitor is a device that keeps track of a golfer’s stats during and after their swing. It’s able to show how long the ball travels, how hard it was hit, and even the trajectory of the ball flight. However, the real beauty of the launch monitor is the ability to calculate the angles of the golfer’s approach, giving enough information for the golfer to tweak and improve their swing. The launch monitor alone doesn’t complete the golf simulator experience. When it’s paired with the correct software such as Foresight Sports simulator, you have the recipe for a fun and exciting time. Users can actually see the magic. Either choose from a variety of renowned golf courses such as the newly added Old Course at St Andrews, or play mini games, doing it all in the comfort of the Shank Junkies facilities.
Now, would I say this is the perfect way to golf? No, of course not. Shank Junkies just added another option for golfers to choose from when they’re itching to play. As a beginner, the stats are great and all, but the satisfaction of watching the ball fly just can’t be fulfilled

24 automotive car culture from the 7th to 9th of October as Cult. (Cars & Urban Lifestyle Trends) will be coming to SICC. It’ll be the biggest indoor car event in Borneo, so make sure you be there to be part of history.
e’re all part of a culture. It’s who or what we are based on, the things we do and the environment we’re in. Not only in the traditional sense but also in more modern terms. These days, cultures will intertwine with each other and create subcultures as a result. One of these cultures that has developed many more subcultures under it is the car culture. As the name says, car culture is all people and things related to cars. Anyone who loves and appreciates cars is part of the culture. One doesn’t necessarily have to be an expert on them, just your enthusiasm is enough to be part of it. The best part about car culture is the subcultures that have developed around it. Do you favour exotic Italian supercars? Or are you more into cars native to Japan? Well, there are subcultures for both of them. Believe it or not, there’s also a subculture dedicated to customising their cars to look as worn down as possible. These cars are called Rat rods and honestly, they are not to the taste of most people. But you can’t deny the popularity of it among certain groups of people. This is what it means to be part of a culture. Sharing a common interest within a group of people. So, what about Sabah? Are there any Sabahans part of any car culture? Of course! The most popular one is the 4x4 community. They drive highly modified SUVs that are capable of traversing the roughest terrain. There are also communities and clubs based on specific cars such as the Perodua Viva, Myvi, Axia, or even the Alza. From time to time, you can even see niches that you won’t believe pop up in Sabah such as the drifting and drag racing community. Like I said, being enthusiastic about cars is more than enough to be part of car culture. However, if you’re ever curious about what car communities exist in Sabah, just mark your calendars W by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash

Hope our tourism industry continues to boom as we continue to promote the many exciting spots in our beloved state.
Any other interesting spots you would recommend tourists to visit?
This proves that the tourist exposure regarding Sabah has elevated, giving efficacious outcomes for the tourism industry. We should use these advantages to also promote Sabah’s islands apart from the highlands to boost even more of our state’s economical state. Apart from Sipadan, there are plenty of beautiful islands such as Bohey Dulang Island for people who love hiking. For people who love privacy, Pulau Kelambu provides the best solitude as people rarely indulge themselves there. And the fact is Bohey Dulang and Pulau Kelambu are just some of the many interesting islands to visit in Sabah.

“The most important thing is to love and be sincere in whatever you do and when you give, do it for the feeling of fulfilment and expect nothing in return”, said Datuk Hajah Rosmawati.

Born into a family with many male figures, Datuk Hajah Rosmawati has no problem working in a male-dominated industry as she has learned and understand the different characters of men from her own brothers. She does not feel there is a need to compete but rather to work with men instead as you tend to make more enemies when competing.
Her advice to the other women who are on their path to success – know your strengths, because it is your strengths that matters when working in a team. In this world, you will never fail as long as you have something to contribute. Knowing your strengths will also help you to achieve your own objectives as well as other people’s.
Although the pressure to achieve and perform well is always there, she will always stay focus on what she needs to do. She added, “To juggle everything in life you need to have good strategic planning and management”.
Although she is fully committed to her job and responsibilities, she is solely focused and devoted to her family when at home.
Datuk Hajah Rosmawati Haji Lasuki, J.P. Chief Executive Officer
“When you think it is right and do-able, just focus on your objectives. Along the way, there is bound to be people to help you. However, there are also people who would bring you down, but just take it as constructive criticism and improve”
When asked about her passion and interests, she replied, “Reading and travelling. There are no limits to learning and both reading and travelling allows us to gain new knowledge and insights in life”. For Datuk Hajah Rosmawati adapting different perspectives is a way to learn other people’s strengths, and when we understand this and apply it on ourselves it is called selfDatukimprovements.HajahRosmawati admits that she is a workaholic and there is not a day in her life where she does not love what she does. Her commitment and passion was recognised during this year’s International Women’s Day where she was awarded with the “Wanita Unggul Pilihan Scenic 2022” for the significance, impact and contribution she has made not only for SICC but for Sabah as a whole.
As she has limited time to be with her family, she always ensures her family time are quality time. When she is out working, her family fully respect her time and work, and supports her in what she loves doing.
According to Datuk Hajah Rosmawati you need to think and assess the outcome before you start anything. Life is full of challenges but there is always a problem to every solution.

Her vision and inspirations for SICC comes from her previous business travels and participation in international conferences around the globe. “A MICE destination needs to have their own unique identity and branding to attract the business events. Sabah is blessed with natural wonders, rich cultural heritage and the most hospitable people. We are more than capable to host worldlevel international conferences”, said Datuk Hajah Rosmawati. “Together we have the competency to do it. We just have to enhance and increase the value for our product and offerings. This is how we can sustain our tourism and hospitality industry, by showcasing our uniqueness and natural worth, as well as our warmth and harmony of a diverse community”, she added.
Most recently, Isabelle was a Negotiator with PropNex Realty; developing strategies and plans for prospecting clients.
Despite her impressive portfolio, working with SICC is a new exciting ballgame for her. Although her background has always been sales, events and marketing, her role as the DOSEM of a convention centre requires a different set skill and strategies. Always up for the challenge, Isabelle takes this as an opportunity to level up her game to elevate SICC as one of the best convention centres in South East Asia. Being fully committed to her role in SICC, most of her time is spent at work and as Isabelle puts it, “Leisure later, work now”. However, when she has the time she enjoys watching movies or doing outdoor activities like walking, hiking or going to the island. Isabelle is a force of nature who knows what she wants, what she needs to do and is able to make decisions on her feet. She does not shy away from challenges and obstacles but tackle them heads on.

Isabelle Chai Director of Sales & Events Azman Bin Nain Director of Convention & Housekeeping
Aprogrammes.
zman started his career as a hotelier 26 years ago and was a part of the opening team for many well-known hotels and resorts around Kota Kinabalu. He joined Sabah International Convention Centre in 2019 as the Director of Housekeeping and was recently promoted as the Director of Convention and Housekeeping; overseeing the banquet services, Meranti Café, Guest Services as well as the housekeeping operations including cleaning, maintenance and in-house
Azman is an approachable leader who is reliable and open. He emphasized that his team does not work for him, but rather with him where he includes them in meetings, projects and decision making. “There is no right or wrong. There is always a justification to every decision”, he said.
As a father of four children aged between 22 to 9 years old, Azman prefers to be with his family when he is not working. A simple man who prefers casual tshirt and shorts over a suit, Azman enjoys travelling, cycling and hiking. Although his job requires him to be at work almost 7 days a week, Azman said the key is to make free time by strategizing your work. A philosophy which he holds in life, “Just be happy with whatever you have, and be sincere in everything you do. When we are sincere and honest, the blessings of life will come naturally to you”.
With almost 30 years of experience in international luxury hospitality, Isabelle has established her sales & marketing career in few of the world’s prestigious hotel brands including Kota Kinabalu Marriott Hotel, PODZzz Suites & Semporna Dream Villa, JW Marriott Beijing, The Ritz Carlton Beijing, Shangri-La Hotel Doha, Shangri-La Hotel Hambantota Sri Lanka, Sutera Harbour Resort, Hotel JenTanglin Singapore, Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa Muscat Oman and Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa Sabah.
To be responsible for a convention centre demands a different expertise as it involves a larger scale of management. Azman had to go back to basics but he enjoys every process where he can refresh and expand his knowledge and skills. A convention centre of SICC magnitude requires a lot of planning, coordination and manpower. The day to day operations comes with different challenges and it is Azman’s responsibilities to find effective solutions to ensure a smooth and successful event. “It is not about what you don’t know, you just need to learn it”, he shared.
Despite the demanding nature of her work, this bubbly woman always takes things on a positive note. “I love singing, and I would sometimes sing in the office to release the stress. I would rather sing in front of my computer than to be stressed out or shouting at my staff”, she jokes. Whenever Catherina is not at work, she spends her time with her family watching movies or singing together. Her family are so passionate about music; they have their own sound system at home for fun karaoke sessions.

As the largest convention facility in East Malaysia with a total function space of 153,197sqm, it requires a minimum engineering team of 20 persons to operate and maintain the building. To ensure a strong and efficient teamwork, Fadhil instils a sense of ownership and belonging to SICC – to be responsible and to take care and maintain the building as if it is their own.
When it comes to work Catherina can be strict and outspoken. When she has a strong belief on certain issues, she would explain and elaborate on the matter until others can understand from her point of view. Despite being a straightforward person, Catherina is very approachable and easy going, and she loves to meet and interact with people.
Despite the responsibilities he has at work, Fadhil will always take some time off to spend quality time with his family. Being a father of two princesses, he tries to be with his family as much as he can. Fadhil also enjoys sport where he used to play volleyball and table tennis during his younger days. Now, he prefers a game of futsal.
Fadhil who is from Sandakan brings with him 18 years of experience in engineering and building maintenance where his portfolio includes several shopping malls and commercial buildings in Kota Kinabalu.
Although she is staying in Tuaran, she does not mind the commute. In fact she enjoys the trip of going back and forth. “I am just doing my thing and I love it. I love everything about my work, and anything finance. I love my calculator and I also love the people I work with”, explains Catherina. Her days start as early as 6.15am. After arriving at work, she would first look at the numbers and analyse the operations from the day before; to prepare her report for the Executive Committee daily meeting. Her days are mostly spent in front of her computer going through the books and statements.
Director of Engineering ven back in his schooling days at SM Teknik Likas, Fadhil has always been interested in engineering and is good with electrical works. Today, he heads the Engineering Department of Sabah International Convention Centre as the Director where he manages multiple teams focusing on operations, maintenance, servicing, special projects as well as planning and execution of Estrategies.

C Mohd Firdaous Bin Mohd Izhar Director of Culinary
Chef Mohd Firdaous does not walk alone as he has a strong team of chefs to run the kitchen efficiently. The recruitments of chefs at SICC are based on experiences and specialties, “They are good at what they do; I only need to guide them”. Many have the perception that a Director will only sit in the office the whole day, but this is not the case for Chef Mohd Firdaous who prefers to be on his feet and feel the heat in the kitchen. As SICC is versatile in their menu, there is a lot of research as well as trials and errors in the kitchen which he enjoys. “As I get older and achieved certain levels, I just want to do the things that I love doing. I am a hands-on person and when there is an issue in the kitchen. I am always ready to jump in and guide the team. Cooking is my forte, it is my flair and it is also my hobby”, explained Chef Mohd Firdaous.
As a Director of Culinary in SICC, Chef Mohd Firdaous needs to be versatile in terms of food preparation. “SICC is a big convention centre that welcomes many visitors including international delegates from various countries. We always received requests for different cuisines like Indonesian, Sichuan, Arab and more. At SICC, we always rise up to the challenge so we learn and study on how to prepare these dishes the correct and most authentic way”, he added.
hef Mohd Firdaous was born in Kuala Lumpur, grew up in Johor and relocated to Sabah in 2019. Although he has made a name for himself as a chef, he admitted cooking was not something he was interested during his younger days. Food business was something Chef Mohd Firdaous grew up with – his grandmother was a canteen operator while his mother runs a food catering business. So it was only natural for Chef Mohd Firdaous to take up culinary arts after high school and that is when he became interested in cooking.
ocated 36 km from the town of Lahad Datu is the Taliwas River Conservation Area (TRCA), a Class 1 Protection Forest Reserve with an area of 9,546 hectares of unique ultramafic landscape and lowland forest, that is managed by Yayasan Sabah DespiteGroup. being situated just 45 km from the eastern part of the well-known Danum Valley Studies Centre, very few have heard about the Taliwas River. Hence, to uplift TRCA to become one of Sabah’s number one ecotourism and recreational destinations, a 10-day scientific exploration was held to study the biodiversity and natural resources of Taliwas River, in which the data collected will be used as reference material to develop strategic plans and future activities that can be done at TRCA. The scientific exploration consisted of 166 attendees, ranging from researchers and their assistants, to support staff and students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Teknologi Mara and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. The expedition was officiated by Yayasan Sabah Director cum Executive Chairman of Innoprise Corporation Sdn Bhd, Dato’ Sri Haji Gulamhaidar @ Yusof bin Khan Bahadar on the 7th of June 2022, at a flagoff ceremony at the podium of Menara Tun Mustapha in Kota OurKinabalu.tripto
TRCA took about 10 hours by road. As we arrived at the gateway to TRCA during the night, I had a sense of nervousness mixed with excitement as it was my first camping experience. However, I felt relieved when we reached the TRCA L campsite, knowing that they provide 24-hour electricity, clean water equipped with toilets and bathrooms, an open dining hall, proper campsites and hostels. My teammate and I were each assigned to our sleeping arrangements, and were then treated to a delicious dinner prepared by the kitchen team. We attended the nightly briefing, and went into a deep slumber, preparing for the following day.
Sleeping in the tent outside was nerve-wracking but an exciting experience nonetheless. The location of our tents were close enough to the TRCA campsite yet far enough to make us experience the jungle. On the first night, we heard elephant sounds. As scary as that may sound, it was exciting to listen to the herd. However, safety at the campsite was assured as the whole TRCA is surrounded by fences to prevent the elephants from coming in. At night, the air could get chilly due to the nearby river and the presence of tall trees surrounding the campsite, so preparing a hot drink in a flask is very handy to keep you warm at Thenight.next morning, we had breakfast with all the participants of the scientific exploration at the open hall and prepared for a visit from Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Abidin bin Madingkir with Dato’ Sri Haji Gulamhaidar, and their entourage. The participants had all put up their research posters at the campsite gallery and presented their scientific findings on the biodiversity and resources found at Taliwas River based on their explored category of topic. Five topics were explored; Physical Science, Flora Diversity, Fauna Diversity, Scientific Exploration at Taliwas ConservationRiverArea
Social Science and Resource Utilisation. Their presentations were very lively as it was informative. At the same time, Sabah Nature Club of SK Silam, Lahad Datu also held an exhibition on environmental education at the TRCA. In the evening, we would swim at the river beside the campsite to reward ourselves after a hot sunny day. The flowy waters of the river and the tranquillity of being surrounded by nature is an experience you wouldn’t be able to get in the city. One particular evening, a pair of hornbills flew over the river when we went for a swim. It was an amazing sight. Our stay at TRCA campsite was an eventful experience. In the spirit of exploring, we tagged along with a ranger and a few researchers to witness the wonders of Taliwas River Conservation Area. We visited Taliwas Waterfalls, which is just a 45 minutes journey from the main road. The hike was fairly easy as the path was flat with minimal incline. Our ranger was also very informative, as he gave us informative explanations when we encountered plants like the Jewel Orchid and some species of keladi along the road. Upon arrival at Taliwas Waterfalls, we were mesmerised by its natural beauty and completely forgot the tiredness that we felt during the hike. And of course, we did not miss the chance to swim in the waters of Taliwas Waterfalls. We also took the opportunity to stay overnight in the jungle. We visited Vanilla Waterfalls, which took us around two hours of jungle trekking to get to the campsite via the Vanilla trail, and another hour to get to the waterfall. Unlike Taliwas Waterfalls, the hike to Vanilla Waterfalls is not for the faint hearted. I’d say it is for the ones who particularly love adventure. It was challenging but a very rewarding experience as a whole. One of the most memorable moments during our trip was when we went out for a night drive around TRCA. As soon as we went outside TRCA, we encountered a pair of lesser mouse deer and a few flying squirrels. What’s unique and unforgettable about the encounter was that the squirrels flew parallel to and right over our vehicle. Imagine the excitement we all felt! The night before we departed from TRCA and back to the city, the management of the scientific exploration held a small party at the open hall. There was also a sharing session with all the participants, and a small appreciation night for the management team. The night ended with a karaoke session before we returned to our camps to pack and rested in preparation for our journey back. Due to its abundant natural resources and rich biodiversity, TRCA has a very high potential to be Sabah’s top destination for research and ecotourism. The TRCA scientific exploration encourages conservation and the preservation of the natural forest biodiversity, maintaining sustainability of the forest while enhancing the effectiveness of Sabah’s natural resources management.

eco news THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE 2022
The theme ‘Replanting Our Future’ foretold an active discourse on rehabilitative efforts for the environment to ensure a healthy parallel future for life on Earth. This was further driven down by Datuk Jafry B. Hj. Ariffin, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, who said in his officiating speech, “The natural environment in Sabah is intertwined with not just tourism but also our daily lives. If we allow more rainforests to be logged, further climate change will be experienced, and higher temperatures recorded. This affects many other aspects of our lives and other sectors of the economy”.
TEC was officiated during a launch which included speeches by key guests and tree planting ceremony including guest of honour Yang Berhormat Datuk Joniston Bin Lumai @ Bangkuai, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture, & Environment Sabah, present on behalf of Yang Berhormat Datuk Jafry Haji Ariffin, Minister of Tourism, Culture, & Environment Sabah.
Prof. Dr. Ahmad Ismail informed in his keynote address, “despite having many more unknown species of flora and fauna, Malaysia is ranked among the top twelve mega-biodiversity countries in the world. Together, these countries accommodate 60-70% of the world’s recorded biodiversity”. He stressed the need to preserve and conserve our biodiversity.
The Environmental Conference is a series of conferences for experts to discuss the banes and solutions for the environment.
36 ota Kinabalu, 4 June 2022 - The Environmental Conference (TEC) 2022 – its inaugural edition – ran from 4th to 6th June 2022 at the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Ramsar Site in conjunction with the World Environment Day on the 4th of June. It is also the first ever international conference aptly held at an actual wetland. The conference was jointly organised by the Rotary Club of Luyang and Rotary Club of Kuching with the second installment of TEC to be held in Kuching in 2024.
Full Body Split:
• Trains the entire upper body and legs per session in an alternating fashion;
• Training the entire upper body might mean longer sessions in the gym;
• Simple to programme and easy to understand;
• Can be very high frequency, anywhere from 2x-6x a week depending on how advanced you are;
• Provides enough recovery for each muscle group trained while allowing them to be trained 2x a week;
• Trains all major muscle group with a different emphasis on each day every session (Chest, Back, Shoulders, Legs, Abs);
• May cause increased joint stress and injury if overdone;
• Can be scaled between 4x to 6x a week depending on commitment levels;
• Time efficient as there are only 1-2 exercises per muscle group every session, eliminating the need for longer rest times between exercises;
For example, if you were to train chest and shoulders on Monday, it’s probably not a great idea to work the same muscle groups the day after. Instead, you could train legs on the following day, then train chest and shoulders again once they’ve recovered!
A training split is just a way to schedule your workouts to not overlap with each other and provide better bang for buck every time you enter the gym. A good training split will provide enough frequency for each muscle group (2> times a week) to stimulate growth while still providing amble time for recovery.
• Legs and upper body might not recover at the same rate.

In conclusion, there isn’t a one shoe fits all training split. Every split has their pros and cons depending on your life situation. As long as your workouts fit in your schedule and follows most muscle building criteria, you will continue to make gains.

What’s even more exciting is to see events coming back has been 2 long years without happenings and gatherings; every event organised are soul lifting in some way or another. We have major concerts happening around the globe - some are even coming to Malaysia, a neighbouring recent one would have been Borneo Rainforest Festival in Kuching! Indeed it was great to see people and enjoying great music together. Property expos as well as travel fairs; are among common events happening to catchup with the economy. We are finally going through post-covid phase and normalisation. Here are ways to make the best of events!

Entrance fee and tickets will be sold early on most cases; buy them during release to avoid price hikes from resellers. Although it is still a challenge to get tickets before it gets sold out, but it is definitely recommended to avoid the last minute rush and regret. I mean, sacrifices are to be made for a chance to meet your idol and see them perform on stage right?
Remember to also practice social distancing as much as you can with your mask on! We may be living in post covid terms; but it is still a new norm that we should take note of to keep you and everyone safe.
Always stay hydrated in every event; as we spend time moving and going around experiencing; it is important to hydrate with drinks - our good ol’ water will make sure we don’t go through an extra sugar rush from the excitement; although there is definitely no restriction to have some fun! But water will help maintain your energy that will last through the day.

DENTAL
caring for baby teeth
• Floss your child’s teeth daily after age 2.
Cavities or stain build ups are common especially in children. However, according to Dr. Sylvia of Phi Dental, preemptive measures can be taken to lessen the damage ensuring your child’s oral health, such as:
ome babies start teething before they are 4 months old, and some after 12 months. However, most babies start teething at around 6 months. Multiple national health care organisations now recommend that the first dental visit should happen by the age of one / or when their first tooth erupts.
It is very important for the first dental visit to be painless. Some dentists would not want to do any treatment during the first visit but just spend time chatting with the child and just do a general dental check up. A dentist would work his way through increasing degrees of discomfort of required treatments so that the child would be less anxious when rapport is built.
• Start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first one appears. Brush the teeth, tongue, and gums twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Or watch as your child brushes his or her teeth.
• Make sure your child eats a well-balanced diet. Limit snacks that are sticky and high in sugars, such as chips, candy, cookies, and cakes.
42
• If your child uses a bottle at bedtime, only put water in it. Juice or formula contain sugars that can lead to tooth decay.
Phi Dental is a children friendly and mother friendly dental clinic complete with breastfeeding facilities. How they perform paediatric dental assessments is that first and foremost they will try to start talking to their young patients on non-dental topics, gain their rapport and introduce the environment and instruments to them. Conversations typically start with something about the child’s daily life and not about teeth, allowing the child to be at ease. Moreover, parents are also allowed to sit on the dental chair with their child on their lap while dental assessment is performed. Only when the child is comfortable with his or her surroundings, the dentist will then ‘count their teeth’ to check on any abnormalities like caries or other dental diseases. Shall treatment be needed, dentists at Phi Dental would normally first familiarise children with Tell-Show-Do. They will S by Hanis Batrisyia Image | Unsplash tell their little patient what needs to be done, show them the instrument including dental brush and materials, then carry out the dental treatment with patient corporations. Paediatric dental assessments at Phi Dental normally start with simple procedures like brushing their teeth on the first visit, then only followed by longer procedures like fillings on the following visits.
• For children younger than 3 years old, use only a small amount of toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice. Starting at 3 years old, your child can use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
• Talk with your child’s healthcare provider or dentist about using a fluoride supplement if you live in an area without fluoridated water. Also ask about dental sealants and fluoride varnish. Both are put on the teeth.
• Prevent the transfer of bacteria from your mouth to your child’s by not sharing eating utensils. Don’t clean your infant’s pacifier with your saliva.
We often hear many stories of fearful children who are scared even at the idea of visiting the dental clinic. But did you know that most dentists have been trained to handle fearful children during a dental visit?
• Schedule routine dental cleanings and exams for your child every 6 months.
As baby teeth pave the way for your child’s permanent teeth, caring for your child’s baby teeth is just as important as caring for permanent adult teeth. Hence, good oral hygiene practices should begin early to ensure a healthy set of baby teeth for your child. Through proper care and preventive measures, your child could have a lifetime of healthy, happy smiles.

orders are lifted, crowds are back to hustling and bustling, night markets and events are back on schedule. Covid has been with us, with a blink of an eye 2 years of being homebound has been sort of the new norm. We are well aware the post-covid situation are more flexible now and people had begun social activities just like it was yesterday’s news. As many are still abiding to the mask-on rule; some however prefers the freedom to breathe openly.
Crowds are everywhere nowadays, with events and concerts back on everyone’s to-go list, it is definitely a no-brainer but to buy all the tickets! Gaming enthusiast would be happy on the upcoming Singapore game - we know we are. While Water Bomb concerts in Thailand are on upcoming events, and World Tours resumes! As exciting as it is, everyone now are more eager and will be more willing to experience life to the fullest. Spending habits are more open and no longer as conservative. With current economic conditions, it is a need to consider on finances although it might have looked like 2 years of covid condition may have build up savings. The future lies quite vague but in return for freedom and experiences, one must suffer in terms of financial stability, especially on rainy days. I mean, concert tickets aren’t your cheapest kind of entertainment. So spend wisely, I would say.
B We may be going through post-covid conditions, but everyone seems to have taken it lightly as a cold and coughing are looked upon as common sickness. Self-tests are somewhat a weekly routine, and yet there are still those who refuse to stay home should there be symptoms. Their excuse? Well, everyone is now vaccinated - doesn’t really do much damage anyway. Where are the considerations to the elders and the children? Our immune systems are getting weaker nowadays, and it should not be taken for granted. Please continue to practice social distancing and self quarantine accordingly when needed. Especially when in large crowds, spreading with just a cough would cause a wild fire. Do take note and practice balance.

FREEDOM IN MODERATION
With more freedom and social events returning, every party should play a part in carefully curating relevant and quality gatherings. Hence, events are pressured with expectations - creativity and on relevance to the current trend is highly important to ensure success. But who am I kidding, who doesn’t love a fun night out with music and good companion. Work hard, play hard, and making sure it’s beneficial.
There are many memorable moments during the All-Star Weekend. In 1988, Larry Bird entered and won his 3rd consecutive Three-Point Contest while still in his warm-up jacket. He famously asked his competitors who amongst them would come 2nd that day. In the same year, Michael Jordan defended his Slam Dunk Contest title against Dominique Wilkins with a gravity defying dunk, jumping from the freethrow line that’s 15ft (4.6m) from the basket. However, the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest was the best of all time. It showcased the best dunker of all time, Vince Carter, who put up a legendary performance.

Straying from the conventional tom yam noodles, their Linguini Creamy Seafood Tom Yam is truly a flavour bomb! A creative fusion that combines the flavours of Thai with delicious pasta.
Meranti Cafe: New Makan Experience at SICC
Meranti Cafe’s Soft Shell Crab Salted Egg Spaghetti is a versatile dish. A pasta dish cooked in garlic, olive oil, peperoncino, curry leaves, red chillies and topped with a delicious crispy soft shell crab. It has a rich buttery salty blend with a hint of spice. I highly recommend this dish! S 52
restaurant review
What’s new about Meranti Cafe is that they have a whole new upgraded fully-equipped and functional kitchen, new menu, a new tea corner and also a new patisserie section where fresh delicious gourmet pastries are available everyday.
For a more vegetarian friendly option, try their stewed Eggplant Thai Green Curry with a plate of steamed white rice on the side! The eggplants were cooked tender and silky to perfection. Meanwhile, the green curry tastes rich, succulent, creamy, sweet, and salty at the same time. Delicious! Next on the menu is Oxtail. Their Oxtail Broth Mamak Style, or more commonly known as “Sup Tulang” by the locals, is just exquisite! The broth was rich in flavours, and the meat has abah International Convention Centre (SICC) recently upgraded their Level 3 dining area. Initially called SICC Cafe in 2021, their latest dining space is now called Meranti Cafe, inspired by the endangered 100.8 metre high yellow Meranti Tree (Shorea Faquetiana) found in Danum Valley Conservation Area. Moreover, the name is perfectly fitting as Meranti Cafe is situated right at SICC’s Rainforest Wing to commemorate SICC’s conservation efforts.
If you’ve been to SICC’s Ramadan dinner buffet this year, you’d most definitely remember their flavourful Nasi Ulam Ayam Percik, which is available daily at Meranti Cafe! Served with spice-infused percik-style chicken thigh, mackerel flakes, mango salad, chilli soya sauce, salted egg and prawn crackers on the side, definitely a must-try when you visit Meranti Cafe!
Meranti Cafe offers an elevated dining experience while highlighting the concept of “A Taste of Asian’’ with its array of local and western favourites. We visited Meranti Cafe and tasted some of their best sellers, such as the Nasi Ulam Ayam Percik, Soft Shell Crab Salted Egg Spaghetti, Chermoula Salmon, Linguini Creamy Seafood Tom Yam, Eggplant Thai Green Curry, Oxtail Broth Mamak Style, and Oxtail Assam Pedas Tom Yam.
Since we’re still on the topic of seafood, try Meranti Cafe’s Chermoula Salmon. This dish features a serving of pan-seared Salmon served with homemade Chermoula puree which is a Moroccan cilantro and parsley based pesto, along with Scottish Champ and buttered vegetables. It’s no wonder this dish is a crowd favourite. The freshness and tangy flavours complement the salmon so well. Absolute chef’s kiss!

Soft Shell Crab Salted Egg Spaghetti Linguini Creamy Seafood Tom Yam a boney robust beef flavour along with a gelatinous texture. Whereas for their Oxtail Assam Pedas Tom Yam, it is stewed in chilli paste and Thai herbs. After our lunch, we headed to Meranti Cafe’s new tea & patisserie corner and sampled their best-selling pastries. Among the pastries we tried at Meranti Cafe’s patisserie were their Strawberry tart, Mini Basque Cheese Cake, Strawberry Pistachio Cake and Vanilla Crème Brûlée. Their strawberry tart was sweet and the golden crispy crust of the tart was not too hard and not too soft, just nice. Served with mango purée and some strawberries on the side, making it the perfect dessert to have at any time of the day. Meanwhile, their mini basque cheese cake was soft and creamy, airy with a soufflé-like cream cheese-based batter, and topped with fresh sweet strawberry and blueberry jam on the side. Next up is their Strawberry Pistachio Cake. I recognised this scrumptious dessert instantly from SICC’s previous ramadan buffet dinner. And to no surprise, the cake tasted just as good as it looks! The gelatinous layer of strawberries complements the moist pistachio layer splendidly. Definitely one of my alltime favourites from SICC. Last but not least is their Vanilla Crème Brûlée. Meranti Cafe’s Vanilla Crème Brûlée tastes of rich cream with the right balance of aromatic vanilla taste, and the caramelised sugar on the top layer adds a nuttiness yet sweet texture to it. It’s sweet but not too overpowering. Honestly, I could eat this all day because it’s that good!
Overall, Meranti Cafe is definitely an upgrade from the previous SICC Cafe, from the quality of food, to the service, and the ambience of the restaurant. If you’re looking for a nice restaurant with versatile dishes, Meranti Cafe is perfect for you! Personally, I would definitely want to come again and try more dishes from their menu.by Hanis Batrisyia Image | Vance Tan Level 3, Meranti Cafe, Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Opening Hours: Sunday to Thursday | 8.00 AM to 6.00 PM Friday to Saturday | 8.00 AM to 10.00 PM
