Their debut album, “Time and Tune,” released in September 2022, showcases Wong’s exceptional arrangements of Malaysian folk tunes, jazz standards, and original compositions that draw inspiration from his Sabahan heritage.
Internationally, Wong has received accolades for his talent. In 2017, he became the youngest winner of the Malaysian Jazz Piano Competition at the age of 17. He represented Malaysia in esteemed events like the Singapore International Jazz Battle and Thailand Jazz Competition in 2018 and 2019. Wong’s participation in the One People Project, uniting jazz musicians from the Asia-Pacific region, further solidified his reputation as a gifted artist.
Driven by his own experiences and the need for improved jazz education, Wong has developed a passion for teaching. He shares his knowledge of jazz harmony and improvisation with music teachers and students, aiming to bridge the gap and inspire the next generation of jazz enthusiasts.
With his recent achievement at the DownBeat Student Music Awards and an upcoming second Master’s degree in Classical Performance, Wong’s future shines brightly. Balancing his roles as a performer and educator, he continues to push the boundaries of jazz, infusing his Sabahan roots into his captivating compositions.

Recognized in the Graduate Jazz Soloist category, Wong’s remarkable achievement cements his position as an emerging star in the world of jazz.

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have been a thing for a while now. Many companies have tried, and failed, to implement and popularise them through smartphones and video game consoles. It wasn’t until the introduction of the Oculus Rift that the tech started to catch on, and many mainstream companies such as Google and Samsung have produced their own AR and VR products.Well, after some time, it’s now Apple’s turn to show us what they got.
The Apple Vision Pro is the first headset that’s made by the tech giant. It uses a combination of VR and AR tech to allow users to see the world around them along with the headset’s interface. With what Apple calls their EyeSight technology, you’ll be fully immersed in the virtual world, while the headset will reveal your eyes to anyone who approaches you to let them know you’re busy with your virtual work.
So what does the Vision Pro do anyway? Well, it’s a standalone computer implementing Apple’s M2 chip and is supposed to replace your iPad, Mac, and even your iPhone. The Vision Pro will display your apps, work, or movies as if it’s “floating” in the room, which is honestly pretty cool. Users will have somewhat of an infinite space to put up any app around them, without the constraints of your typical screen.
To control the Vision Pro, there are cameras, sensors and mics all around the front plate of the headset to track hand movements and voice. However, the most impressive thing about it is the eyetracking through the sensors in the headset itself. Just look and highlight the app or object you’d like to select, do some hand gestures, and presto! No need for any other peripherals.
Apart from these details, the headset is reported to be quite comfortable to use with a cushioned headband, lightweight headset, and form fitting Light Seal that gently conforms to your face and blocks out stray light. There are also speakers that deliver great Spatial Sound positioned close to the ears to keep you aware of your surroundings.
So, what’s the catch? Well, being this is an Apple product, you can expect a steep price tag. $3500, or RM16,324 to be exact. And because this will be a first generation product, some bugs will definitely be an issue. All in all, this is a very exciting development in the VR and AR space, as it might just push the technology to really become mainstream.

Forgotten Malaysian Cars
There have been many Malaysian cars that have graced our roads ever since the first Proton Saga came off the factory floor. Many of them are beloved by Malaysians, some even becoming cult icons. However, there are several models from Proton and Perodua that are somewhat forgotten by road users. Let’s talk about them.
Do you remember the Proton Juara? A “champion” by name, this little mini MPV (multi-purpose van) was introduced in 2001. The Juara was Proton’s first model that wasn’t a saloon, hatchback, or coupe. Based on Mitsubishi’s Town Box Wide model, it was supposed to be a “lifestyle vehicle” for Malaysians, However, due to its unconventional kei car dimensions, it wasn’t well received by the Malaysian public. Personally, I’d like to think it was ahead of its time as kei cars are currently gaining a lot of popularity today, potentially even having a cult following someday.
With the Perodua Kembara’s success in the late 90’s and early 2000’s as the cheapest 4WD SUV, Perodua wanted to rekindle the magic in 2008 with the Nautica. However, instead of introducing it as a budget option, it had a price tag of RM89,900! The Nautica was technically a re-badged Toyota Rush/Daihatsu Terios. It was completely assembled in Japan, apart from the front and rear bumpers along with the grille. It had a 4-speed automatic transmission with a full time 4WD system. In hindsight, the Nautica was set to fail since the Toyota Rush was also introduced to the market with more options and a slightly lower price tag for the manual transmission model.
One model that has been completely wiped off the memories of Malaysians, for better or for worse, is the Proton Tiara. It was introduced in 1996 and was based on the more powerful Citroen AX, the Tiara’s grille was restyled to match the existing Saga and Wira models. Sadly, it also wasn’t received very well by the public due to its less than stunning stylings, reliability issues, and difficult to find French spare parts. Its so-called “successor”, the Proton Savvy, didn’t do too good either.
A few honourable mentions to the list are the Proton Arena, Suprima, and the Perodua Rusa. The Arena wasn’t received well when it was launched but has now garnered a cult following due to its unique ute (utility vehicle) styling and the capability of turning into a Lancer Evo ute with a few modifications. The Suprima on the other hand is the newest and arguably the best looking in the list, but not many are roaming our roads today. Finally, the Rusa was a budget minivan that was pretty successful back in the day, but not many people even remember it existing since they don’t see it anywhere to be honest.

This is in line with the association’s first phase of Project Picasso where the aim is to keep the island’s coastline clean among the surrounding communities as well as raise awareness of the importance of conserving the environment in the sea and coastal areas through proper waste management. Meraki Daat President, Michelle de la Harpe said “We are truly honoured to be collaborating with Sail Malaysia and Pillars of Sabah for this meaningful activity. Not only did everyone have an amazing time with art and got to showcase their talents, but there was also an exchange of culture where the sailors from around the world were able to mix with the local students and villagers. They also got to witness and experience for themselves the challenges and pollution that was happening on the island. It was a truly beautiful moment where our passion for the ocean and environment were captured.”
“It was truly inspiring to see the participation from the local school children as well as the general members of the community coming together to produce art for the cause.” Said, Jared Abdul Rahman, President of Pillars of Sabah.
“This is a small step and an important step to get close to the community, with more activities to educate them about keeping our earth clean so that it will help us sustain a healthy life for everyone on this earth.” says James Khoo, MD of Pangkor Marina who is part of the Sail Malaysia crew.
Meraki Daat Sabah Initiative (Meraki Daat) together with project partners Pillars of Sabah, Sail Malaysia, and Sabah Education Department organised a community art activity as part of the Project Picasso Fundraiser Campaign.
The community art activity took place at SMK Gaya, Gaya Island where 15 students, 4 teachers 10 villagers from Kg Lobong, 3 sailors from Sail Malaysia and the members of the Executive Committee of Meraki Daat took part in. The 2 hour activity was facilitated by Pillars of Sabah President, Jared Abdul Rahman and his team.
The objective of this art activity was to foster a profound appreciation and respect for the environment by intertwining artistic expression with the beauty of cultural exchange. the common myths surrounding aspartame
their weight. Some critics argue that artificial sweeteners can lead to weight gain by triggering hunger and increasing food intake. However, studies examining the effects of aspartame on weight have produced mixed results, with no conclusive evidence supporting the idea that aspartame consumption directly causes weight gain. In fact, aspartame can be a useful tool in weight management when used in a balanced diet.
Myth #3: Aspartame causes neurological disorders. Another common misconception is that aspartame can lead to neurological disorders, such as headaches, migraines, or even Alzheimer’s disease. These claims have been extensively investigated, and multiple large-scale studies have failed to establish any link between aspartame consumption and neurological issues in the general population. For individuals with a rare genetic disorder called phenylketonuria (PKU), aspartame should be avoided due to their inability to metabolize phenylalanine, which is found in aspartame. However, this condition only affects a specific and small percentage of the population.
Myth #4: Aspartame is addictive. Some even go as far as to argue that aspartame can lead to addictive behaviour similar to sugar. While artificial sweeteners can be more potent than sugar, leading some people to prefer sweeter foods, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that aspartame itself is addictive or habit-forming.
Aspartame is one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners in the world, found in a plethora of food and beverage products, including diet sodas, sugar-free desserts, and various low-calorie items. Despite its regulatory approval and widespread use, aspartame has been the subject of numerous controversies and misinformation campaigns, especially as of late. In this article, we aim to debunk the common myths surrounding aspartame and present a balanced view based on scientific evidence.
Myth #1: Aspartame is carcinogenic (causes cancer). One of the most persistent myths about aspartame is its alleged link to cancer. However, extensive scientific research conducted by various health organizations, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has consistently found no evidence to support this claim. Aspartame has undergone rigorous safety evaluations and has been deemed safe for consumption by the general population, including pregnant women and children.
Myth #2: Aspartame leads to insulin spikes and weight gain. Aspartame is often marketed as a low-calorie alternative to sugar, making it a popular choice for those looking to manage
In conclusion, aspartame has been the target of numerous myths and misinformation over the years. However, the scientific consensus supported by regulatory agencies worldwide is that aspartame is safe for consumption within established acceptable daily intake levels. Like any other food additive, it should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. If you have concerns or questions about aspartame or any other food ingredient, it’s best to consult with a qualified healthcare professional or registered dietitian to make informed decisions about your dietary choices.

EYELID SURGERY VS PTOSIS REPAIR
Eyelid surgery
Blepharoplasty and ptosis repair are both surgeries designed to improve the upper eyelids. The chief difference between upper eyelid surgery and ptosis repair is that blepharoplasty addresses cosmetic concerns, while the latter procedure addresses weakness in the eye muscle that leads to vision problems.
What is ptosis repair?
Ptosis is a condition in which the levator muscles which allow you to lift your upper lids is weaken, making it difficult to fully open your eyes. In severe cases, this can restrict the scope of your vision. Some patients find they need to raise their eyebrows or tilt their chins to properly see, causing symptoms like eye and neck strain and headaches.
While ptosis is often genetic, the condition frequently develops as a natural part of aging. Depending on the cause and severity of the disorder, the muscle can be shortened and tightened. Excess skin and tissue may be removed if necessary.
What is a blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that corrects loose eyelid skin that results from the natural loss of collagen and elastin in the skin. A crease in the upper eyelid is created to add more definition and is used to restore a refreshed and energetic eye appearance.
“Hooding,” in which loose skin above the eyes sags on or below the lash line, can further exacerbate an aged look. Unlike ptosis repair, upper blepharoplasty is performed to smooth the eyelid contours and achieve a brighter appearance rather than repair muscle function.
It consists of making an incision on the natural crease of the lid. Excess eyelid skin is eliminated and underlying tissues may be repositioned.

Myofunctional therapy is a specialised form of therapy that focuses on improving the function and coordination of the muscles in the face, mouth, and throat. It addresses issues such as incorrect tongue posture, improper breathing habits, orthodontic problems, speech disorders, temporomandibular joint disorders, and sleep-disordered breathing.
The therapy achieves these goals by retraining the muscles of the face and mouth through exercises and techniques. By correcting oral habits and promoting correct tongue posture, myofunctional therapy improves the balance and coordination of the orofacial muscles. This, in turn, can lead to positive changes in facial aesthetics, orthodontic alignment, speech clarity, and overall oral health.
Both children and adults can benefit from myofunctional therapy, but children may benefit more due to their developing muscles and habits. Early intervention can help correct functional issues and prevent potential problems in adulthood. Additionally, children with orthodontic problems or speech disorders can greatly benefit from myofunctional therapy as a complementary treatment alongside orthodontics or speech therapy.
While there are alternatives to myofunctional therapy such as orthodontic treatment, speech therapy, or surgical interventions, myofunctional therapy offers a holistic approach. It addresses the root cause of the problem by correcting muscle dysfunction, making it a comprehensive and potentially more sustainable solution.
Myofunctional therapy is generally safe and non-invasive, with minimal downsides or side effects. Some individuals may experience temporary muscle soreness or fatigue during the
initial stages of therapy. Working with a qualified myofunctional therapist is important to guide and monitor progress throughout the treatment.
Examples of exercises used in myofunctional therapy include tongue posture exercises, orofacial muscle strengthening exercises, breathing exercises, swallowing pattern exercises, and articulation exercises.
Myofunctional therapy is an emerging field that offers a holistic and conservative approach to address orofacial muscle dysfunction. By improving muscle function and coordination, it not only helps solve specific issues but can also enhance facial aesthetics, overall oral health, and quality of life. Consulting a qualified myofunctional therapist is crucial to assess individual needs and create a personalised treatment plan for optimal results.
RANTS & RAVES
Is Nightlife in KK just clubbing?
There’s more to life than clubbing but is there really anything else one can do at night? Now before you get upset with me, hear me out.. nightlife is more than just partying it up at a club or bar.
According to Collins Dictionary, nightlife is all the entertainment and social activities that are available at night in towns and cities, such as nightclubs and theatres. Let me highlight the key words for you. It doesn’t have to be just clubs and bars, it has to do with entertainment when darkness falls.
Let me give it to you straight.. we don’t have much of a selection in KK. Sure, we have bars and clubs that have special events or bands. Then the singers in some of us enjoy the karaoke joints but that’s about it. Occasionally, we get lucky and there will be a concert or two. I remember an all star Asian line up and a classical musical group performing here in recent years. Comedy shows by Kumar and a few other good comedians and pre-Covid we even had theatre groups from KK as well as KL grace the stages of our city and other performances but these are far and few.
One thing for sure is after whatever main event we attend there will be a food/teh tarik session at one of F & B outlets that stay open late. Again a reminder that choices are limited. Come to think about it, all my favourite day time cafes are not open past 6pm and aren’t usually open at 8am for breakfast either! But we won’t get into this issue for now.
I also wish there were things to do for people who have families. Sure, we have the Gaya Street night market where there’s food and some buskers entertaining the people. We have a mini golf establishment that operates till midnight but what else? Finding a place that is kid friendly is also a struggle. That’s another issue too. I’m not saying kids should be up till late night but what else can you do with your children at night besides eating out and catching a movie or hanging out at the mall till it closes.
And if you want something ‘healthier’ there are some recreational sports like badminton and futsal but I think we need more amusement/rec centres like a trampoline park. They have them in KL while not here?
Look, I’m one of those people that can sleep at 9pm but I’m thinking of all you people that need some night time fun. So are you with me? Don’t you think we need more life at night?
by Noor F.Z. Ali Image | UnsplashThe influence of Barbie
POP CULTURE
One of the biggest toy brands in the world was also one of the most “controversial” and “scandalous” as well. Since its introduction, Barbie dolls have been loved and loathed by many around the world. As a toy line, Barbie is one of the most culturally significant names ever, having influenced almost everyone and everything for decades. Let’s roll back the calendar and take a look at how Barbie has shaped our world.
Barbara Millicent Roberts, or Barbie, is a plastic doll with a figure of an adult woman. It was introduced by Mattel, Inc. on March 9, 1959. Spearheaded by Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel with her husband Elliot, Barbie was based on German Bild Lilli dolls with mostly similar dimensions. Fun fact, Barbie was in fact named after the Handlers’ daughter, Barbara. Speaking of which, in 1961, Ken was introduced as Barbie’s ultimate “accessory”, and again, named after the Handlers’ son.
Criticism has always come against Barbie since her introduction. She has been criticised for promoting unrealistic body proportions and materialism among children. To the first point, Mattel has responded by actually changing her figure through the years. In 2016, Mattel even released 3 additional sizes of Barbie: petite, tall, and curvy.
The thing is, even with said criticisms, Barbie actually provided little girls with alternatives to restricting gender roles, especially in the 1950’s. You see, Barbie didn’t teach nurturing, unlike
other baby dolls. Instead, she was always outfitted with career paraphernalia. Her resume includes airline pilot, astronaut, presidential candidate, doctor, and even Olympic athlete. She was a model for financial self-sufficiency. Barbie was also not defined by relationships, be it a responsibility to men or family. Even with demands for a Barbie-scaled baby, Mattel issued a “Barbie Baby-sits” playset instead of making Barbie a mother.
Barbie has influenced culture as well. She has inspired works of art by Andy Warhol, William Wegman, and David Levinthal. She has appeared in the Toy Story franchise and has many video games based on her adventures. Recently, Barbie also made it to the big screen in a movie directed by Greta Gerwig, and starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
It’s obvious that Barbie isn’t merely a toy, but an inspiration to almost everyone. She is the ultimate pop culture icon.

The cafe is definitely as they desribed themselves in the beginning as a nice cafe with a relaxing environment that serves coffee, pastry and other western food.
Upon recently visiting there, we were surprised with the extended menu that now contains many more variety of food and drinks that didn’t disappoint. Asian dishes are also in the menu now and we got to try their delicious Nasi Ulam Ayam Percik.
Entering the Western menu items, we started with the yummy Creamy Seafood Linguinie. Then the stars of the show started to appear. What a surprise to be served with tender and mouthwatering Lamb Ossobuco and Tomahawk (Sanchoku Wagyu) Steak.
With the above said, Artsy Cafe is not one with a typical cafe food menu. Drinks are good too. We got to taste their hot cafe latte and refreshing drinks such as Virgin Mojito, Blue Lagoon and Oreo Frappe.

Shang Palace: Fresh Seafood for everyone
Not many restaurants have had the pleasure of catching me off guard with how good their dishes taste as compared to my expectations. I’d say only a handful have done so in the past few years. I’m happy to say that Shang Palace is now on that list of happy surprises.
Shang Palace is one of Shangri-La Tanjung Aru’s F&B outlets that welcomes all guests and visitors. They focus on upholding the fine tradition of preparing excellent Chinese cuisine for everyone. As a spoiler to what’s to come, the food we tasted was simply fresh and well-cooked.
Before we get to the food though, let me just touch on Shang Palace’s atmosphere for a bit. Cosy and welcoming, that’s the easiest way to put it. The wall of glass not only allows sunlight to enter the restaurant, but also treats diners with a calming view of Shangri-La Tanjung Aru’s beautiful greenery. Instead of going overboard with the decor, the Chinese theme is tastefully subdued while still being obvious with what types of food you can expect from them. The space can seat up to 90 guests while boasting 3 private rooms for those who prefer a bit of privacy. And just a few feet from the entrance, you’ll find a few tanks and aquariums of the fresh seafood you’ll be able to order.
Speaking of which, the fresh seafood was what we got to try out during our review. We started this culinary tasting with a bowl of Spicy and Sour Soup with Seafood. I expected the usual crab meat soup but was surprised with a nice tangy flavour and a bit of a spicy kick. The slightly thick texture suits the soup well along with the mix of crab meat, fish, and prawns.
Next up is the Steamed Grouper, which was caught from one of the aforementioned fish tanks. Served with a thin gravy of soy sauce and garnished with local herbs, it was overall a perfect fish eating experience. The gravy balanced the flavour of the fish with just a hint of saltiness while the garnish added a crunch to the soft texture of the fish. Just be aware of small bones that you may encounter with dishes such as this.
Shang Palace serves two of my favourite styles of cooking, one of them being dishes fried with salted egg yolk. Their rendition of the Stir-fried Salted Egg Yolk Squid ticks all the boxes for how one should experience this dish. The batter was super crunchy while the squid provided a firm and pleasant bite on the inside. The salted egg yolk was also not overdone, so it doesn’t overwhelm
the flavours of the squid. One thing that I like the most is how the talented chefs minimised the grease that would normally ooze out from stir-fried dishes.
Butter Prawns with Egg Floss was the next item on the menu. “Butter” anything with the egg floss is another one of my favourites, but I tend to avoid prawns since it’s a hassle to take the skin off. Well, I didn’t mind going for seconds, thirds, and even more with Shang Palace’s version of the dish. The egg floss topped with curry leaves were a treat for me mixing it with rice, while the prawns were all very fresh.
That goes the same with the Singapore-style Chilli Crabs. The sweet and spicy gravy complements well with the fresh crabs from their fish tanks. The meat from the crab was thick and juicy. This was the spiciest dish of the bunch, but the spice wasn’t overwhelming and I can definitely guarantee that everyone will enjoy the flavours of this dish. Just be prepared to get your hands dirty with this one.
After the meal, we were served with a myriad of desserts. For a refreshing end to your meal, I’d recommend the Chilled Longan Bean Curd and Sea Coconut Syrup. If you’re looking for a more creamy experience, you can’t go wrong with either the Chilled Red Bean Sago with Coconut Cream, and the Chilled Fresh Honeydew Sago with Milk and Vanilla Ice Cream. However, if you’re looking for a warmer experience, why not try the Deep-fried Pancakes with Red Bean Paste, or the Glutinous Rice Dumplings stuffed with Sesame Paste and served with Ginger Syrup.
Shang Palace offers an exciting yet calming experience when it comes to the flavours and atmosphere of the restaurant. It’s a place where the whole family can come together and enjoy a fresh seafood meal that will definitely tickle the taste buds.
