Borneo heart exhibition

Report

Borneo Heart offered a shared platform and a site of exchange for the peoples of tanah (land) and air (water/sea), and for traditional and contemporary art practices, prompting us to reflect on home and distance, power and representation, love and community. Within the exhibition, there was also a Kerbauworks exhibition selling tikar woven by the artist’s collaborators and merchandise designed by Yee I-Lann and friends. Find out more at borneoheart.yeeilann.com

Borneo Heart is an art exhibition about sharing space that was recently held on 2-29 May 2021 at Sabah International Convention Centre. It presents the work of Kota Kinabaluborn and based artist Yee I-Lann, made in collaboration with weavers, filmmakers, dancers, other fellow creative producers, and friends. The exhibition turns on two concepts: the tikar (woven mat) as a collective platform for community, storytelling, and ritual, and the tamu (weekly market) as a meeting place for the exchange of goods, stories, and ideas. Since 2018, Yee I-Lann has been collaborating with DusunMurut weavers in the Keningau interior and with Bajau Sama Dilaut weavers from Pulau Omadal, Semporna to make tikar. In the process, a craft community has found important opportunities for innovation, and a village community has turned from fishing to weaving, in turn reducing pressure on the Coral Triangle. A unique language of making was developed, bringing together the weaver’s skills, knowledge and stories with Yee’s ideas and propositions, often making powerful statements calling for a politics of inclusion. Borneo Heart showcased these tikar, including TIKAR/MEJA, a 60-tikar installation, Tikar Reben, a 63m tikar created to stretch from the water village of the stateless weavers to the adjacent Malaysian village on Pulau Omadal, “karaoke mats” woven with song lyrics in English and KadazanDusun and a giant emoji mat among others, and also a seven-headed Lalandau headdress, alongside Yee’s works involving performance, video and photomedia. The exhibition also marks the first full presentation of Rasa Sayang, a 488-piece “essay” on love and country in photo-media begun by Yee in 2012, where the alphabet is created from images of human hugs. mental health Awarness with mknk's all day to stop and restrategize. As he was stuck at home going through social media, it made him feel worse to see his peers succeeding while he felt clueless on how to proceed. The artist/producer spills his heart out through the lyrics of the single, detailing how he actually feels with the anxiety to the audience. Anxiousness can cause people to feel trapped or lost in their own bubbles, and MKNK perfectly describes said feeling. He compares it to being lost in a maze or trapped in a cage while telling others he is okay. The lyrics for All Day are also complemented by a banging bass and a slow R&B tune. You could say that the beats symbolise how our hearts beat when we’re nervous while the tune signifies how we take things slow when we do feel this way. It all ties in with the hauntingly deep voice of the “storyteller” in the song. In conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Month, All Day is the perfect single to not only listen to, but also to raise awareness on the mental health issues we encounter daily. Remember, if you are going through tough times, always look on the bright side and things will get better. All of us should also keep in mind, our worth as human beings are more than just social media likes and stats, it goes layers beyond what people think of us. Listen to All Day by MKNK on Spotify, YouTube, and Soundcloud.

T

he pandemic has hit many of us in different ways that it has affected our mental health in certain ways. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, there’s no denying the circumstances we live by today have taken a toll on us. It’s no different for MKNK as well, as he tells his story of trying to overcome mental health issues during the pandemic with his new single, All Day. All Day talks about trying so hard to be someone we think we should be until we get lost from the initial journey we embarked on in the first place. The 2020 lockdown brought anxiety to MKNK as he tried to deal with slowing down his work immensely. He had so much planned for the year but was forced

Realme Air Buds 2 Speaking of which, Realme claims the buds have up to 25 hours of total battery life. This of course includes the charging case’s battery life. If you’re wondering about the buds themselves, they’ll last you about 5 hours. They also fit comfortably in your ear. The eartips are soft and music doesn’t leak out as well. So, watching movies and playing games for a long time isn't an issue. This leads to one of the bigger selling points on the Air Buds 2, the low latency mode, which eliminates the sound lag when gaming or watching movies. Another point Realme has focused on is active noise cancellation (ANC). It works nicely, but not to the point of fully blocking out the world around you, as slight noise can still be heard, especially louder ones. On the contrary, the transparency mode is mind -blowing. It’s able to pick up the sounds around you as if you weren’t wearing them at all. Why? Because sometimes you need to be able to hear your surroundings without taking the buds out. Other functions include touch controls which work decently. How do they sound though? To put it simply, it’s better than most TWS under RM200. The default bass isn’t boomy and doesn’t drown out the mids or the treble. You can still pinpoint the details and where they come from, but it isn’t as apparent as some other headphones. This is an overall perfect earphone when you consider the functions and how it sounds. For the price of RM199, I totally recommend the Realme Air Buds 2 for your overall listening experience.

Y

ou know what I generally dislike about most smartphones these days? The lack of a proper headphone jack. Yes, there are Type-C headsets or connectors, but they just don’t do the job for me. That’s why I’m grateful that truly wireless stereo (TWS) headphones exist. I’m always looking at the latest TWS to be available on the market and I think I found one that not only sounds good but also worth the money. Realme has recently released the Air Buds 2, a sequel to their popular Air Buds. Inside the box, you’ll find the earbuds in their charging case, a Type-C charging cable, extra eartips, and the instruction manual. While the original featured a very familiar design, this time around Realme opted for a fresh look. The white version particularly has an eye-catching silver trim. The charging case is also very portable. It is entirely made of plastic, but it still feels sturdy and has a satisfying snap to it when you open and close it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t feature wireless charging.

ECO NEWS

The strays around us

H

ave you ever noticed stray animals walking around in your neighbourhood? In Sabah, there are many strays that have been left to wander. What would be your reaction when any dog or cat wanders into your yard or home? It’s not a taboo topic but we tend to be lacking in awareness towards strays. Why is that? First of all, let’s look at why there are so many strays on our streets. Our culture doesn’t really tolerate indoor pets, especially dogs. It’s been better lately, as more owners have them indoors today, but people still don’t prefer indoor pets. So, pets are allowed to roam freely outdoors, and sometimes, they just run away. In most cases, we can’t blame the owners, but sometimes owners are just ignorant and never bother to find their pets. Those lost pets, that are mainly not neutered, will breed and overpopulate in the “wild”. Speaking of ignorance, that is also the cause of the cruelty these strays receive when they wander around. Most of us have no sympathy or empathy towards them and shoo them away when they get too close. The best-case scenario is when people just chase them away while the extreme is when people resort to violence. You’ve seen those videos! Personally, I can’t deny I’ve thrown rocks at strays when I was younger. I do regret it, but I’ve realised my actions then weren’t frowned upon and seemed normal to society. That was just how society viewed strays back then and of course, it is wrong.

by Tom Pulingot Image | Unsplash

16

So, how do we help these strays? Well, the smallest action to take is to sympathize and try to feed them or give them water to drink. You could also call your local animal shelter and alert them of the presence of strays in your community. I’ve also seen some people actually befriending strays and adopting them into their households. With any of these actions, keep in mind that these strays are certainly unvaccinated, so be careful when handling them as you don’t know what diseases they could carry, which is also another reason strays are looked down on. Animal shelters are also in need of help as they are doing their best with the amount of strays they’re taking care of, so be mindful and try to help them out by donating food and supplies. The local authorities usually don’t have the patience or compassion in dealing with strays and all our local NGOs dealing with strays are also overwhelmed. Why don’t we go the extra mile? There is no need to keep them 100% off the streets if you are unable to but we can do the next best thing for these strays and that is to take them to the vet to be neutered or cover the costs for an NGO to neuter these strays. This way, they can live out their natural lives but we can stop the reproduction cycle and stop unwanted litters of cats or dogs. Thankfully, our view of strays is improving. We just need that extra push of awareness and action to give them a better life. If you meet any strays wandering around, contact the proper authorities through: DBKK Dog Pound - 088-244 000 IAPWA - www.iapwa.org SPCA KK - 019-880 9660

beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder

W

e’ve all seen vehicle aesthetic mods (modifications) done. Some are rather tasteful and some not. When done right, the car will most definitely look upgraded. When overdone, it looks rather overloaded and unrecognizable. However, where does the line end when it comes to modding your car? For some people, the line shouldn’t start at all while others want a car that stands out from the rest. This is the dilemma when it comes to the RWB Porsches and many other mods in the car culture. The RWB (RAUH-Welt Begriff) Porsches are one of the more well-known makeovers done to one of the more prestigious car brands in the world. The mods were the brainchild of one Akira Nakai, a car tuner based in Japan. He started by modding his personal 1985 Porsche 930. He accentuated the curves of the car with wider wheel wells and put on a giant wing, giving it more of an aggressive stance and look. He named the car after his favourite beer, Stella Artois. When people laid eyes on the Stella Artois, they would either love it or hate it. Those who love it wished they had one as well, which persuaded Nakai-san to open a body shop and provide the service to turn Porsches into RWB machines. The process of the modification is an experience in itself. Customers will invite Nakai-san to their garages and he’ll work his magic on their cars. He free-hand cuts the original wheel wells before fitting in the custom ones perfectly. Rather than watching someone modding a car, it is more like watching an artist creating a piece of art.

by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash 18

On a different spectrum, there are those who consider this sacrilegious. They feel the look and feel of a stock Porsche are perfect enough that modding them is just plain wrong. This has created a divide among car lovers. It’s the same with the “Stance” movement or the Bosozoku style of cars, which have more eccentric-looking mods put onto them. Yet, there are still people who are into the culture and love the types of cars they love. At the end of the day... It’s night. (LOL!) Alright, all jokes aside, it doesn’t matter what type of car you like or how it looks. What matters is we share this culture respectfully and that we don’t hurt anyone with our opinions. Personally, I understand both sides when it comes to the RWB argument. Porsche spent time and effort to perfect their cars but RWB is making literal pieces of art and sharing it with the world.

EXECUTION • While in plank position, engage your core then jump your legs out laterally and then jump back in without piking the glutes or collapsing the back.

(5 sets, 20 reps each side, - Rest 20 Secs) This workout gives your lower abs that extra attention it needs.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS

(5 Sets, 15 Reps each side - Rest 15 secs) This workout promotes good core stabilisation whilst pushing your body into a calorie burning machine.

SETUP • Lie face up on the ground. • Lift both legs at a 30-40 degree angle off the floor. • Engage your abs and try to keep your legs straight. • Place your palms just next to your hips. EXECUTION • Alternately bring the feet up and down while bracing your abs. • Keep a neutral spine.

SETUP • Come to a plank position with feet hip width apart and palms placed directly below the shoulders; keep a neutral spine position. EXECUTION • Without shifting the shoulders and lifting the hips up, alternately bend the knees and bring them up towards your belly button.

Have a great workout and stay safe everyone!

DR HANA ROSE: THE BEAUTY AND BRAIN OF ROSE BAY CLINIC

Wellness

does it work? In a nutshell, hair is extracted from the back of the head and planted on problematic areas. This procedure takes about 6 to 8 hours on average, where post-treatment care is inclusive to ensure high successful hair growth rate. This is a big thing, as our society is no longer required to travel to KL (or anywhere else in the world) to acquire this service, where we are now capable to provide this expertise, here in Sabah. She is also the Founder of Peduli Rose Bay, which is a charity project for less fortunate families, in which she believes “The meaning of life, is to find your gift, and the purpose of life is to give it away”. In each program, a group of selected people is chosen consisting of single mothers, “OKU”, and under poverty. She has appeared in person with her team in all the charity events, personally giving away daily essential goods. Dr Hana, who is able to speak fluently in 4 languages, was recently inducted into a group of highly accredited personalities to the third edition of ‘Successful People in Malaysia’ encyclopedia by Britishpedia Media.

r Hana Rose, is the Chairman and Founder of Rose Bay Medical Group, the very first women-led luxurious aesthetic clinic situated in the heart of Kota Kinabalu @ Sutera Avenue. An icon of beauty, health & fitness influencer, also a former beauty queen, this lady entrepreneur is no stranger to the pageantry scene in Sabah, appearing frequently as a Judge to various beauty events such as Miss Grand, Miss Petite, I Am Model Search and many more. Besides that, this beauty advocate is actively supporting local pageants while creating unparalleled aesthetic awareness to the new generation.

FUN FACT: She exercises religiously 5-6 times a week to maintain her beauty and fitness – no shortcuts.

As everyone knows, Rose Bay clinic is one of the most wellknown established aesthetic clinics led by women and has been in operation for 3 years which provides world class quality aesthetic services similar to the ones seen in West Malaysia. Now, Dr. Hana has stepped up from the rest by introducing Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant to their repertoire of services, the first and only in Sabah. This complicated procedure requires unparalleled expertise, skill, knowledge, and team work. The highly effective FUE procedure restores hair where other chemical methods are unable to. How

eauty comes in various point of views and to Wendy, the Beauty Magician herself believes that a bare nude face can be just as beautiful with just a bit of ‘magic’. Hailing from a cozy hometown in Keningau, Wendy started her life mostly away from home since she was 12 years old. She attended school in Tenom and eventually settled down in Kota Kinabalu. The lovely ‘magician’ started getting into the beauty industry in 2013, established her brand by 2014 and opened up her own studio in 2017. With that being said, she is celebrating her 5th year anniversary for Wendy.S Beauty Magician, where they have served as an all-in-one stop for beauty needs for various clients.

Winning multiple awards and certifications from China International Eyebrow Art Contests and Asiatic Beauty Skills Competitions proofs her credibility in the industry with consecutive years as champion and Top embroider. Not only that, she is also constantly contributing to the industry as consultant and Senior judge for these well-established competitions. Prior to starting the Beauty One-Stop-Centre, she was a makeup artist and participated actively in competitions and events all around the world – mostly in Asian countries as her style is highlighted on Asian features and customer preferences. Slowly after, she felt there is a potential and need to bring semipermanent makeup into Sabah, as it was relatively new in the scene during that time. Breeze (B): What made you pursue in the beauty industry? Wendy Soh (WS): To empower and encourage females to be confident. Many of us are beautiful, we just lack the knowledge for make-up or the time to do so. I wanted to make it easy for everyone and enhance their facial features especially the eyes. Lashes and eyebrow embroidery are usually able to provide a sense of confidence and express personality at the same time. B: Who is your customer base? WS: All ages! We have had customers as young as high school students and up to mature females as well as males too! I try to provide customizable and affordable rates for customers. This is also because we cater to our customer’s lifestyle and preferences as we make the recommendations. B: Any plans to scale your business to other places? WS: For the moment, there’s no plans to expand as I believe that running the business remotely might be difficult especially with current MCO conditions. I do however still on a monthly basis, take pre-booked appointments when I go back to Keningau. B: What are your proudest moments being in the industry thus far? WS: Nothing in particular as I am still learning and growing the business. But having customers from all over Malaysia coming in for our service as well as leading my small team to competitions are among the accomplishments we’ve achieved. And the best part is to see the growing interest in beauty among local Sabahans. Having customers walk-out and bringing my brand out, are proud moments to me, as I pay quite an attention for the results and quality. B: Having Covid-19 affecting most industries, how did you go through that hurdle? WS: Although it was indeed challenging, it has been more than a year since we took a break due to restrictions. However, it wasn’t all bad as somehow, we had gotten more inquiries and business during the CMCO phase where we reopened under tight SOPs. Surprisingly, people during the lockdown period were somehow exposed to semi-permanent makeups and are more willing to

try it out for the convenience of it. As most people are working from home, the tendency to makeup may be reduced. Hence, the reason why they opt for semi-permanent makeups. B: Could you share some of the hardships that you went through during the process to success? WS: Gaining acknowledgement in the beauty industry can be hard in the beginning, we get a lot of perceptions where it’s the minority or a niche business. However, persistence, perseverance and patience is really needed in the industry, as it takes a lot of hard work and passion. If the interest is not there, you might not strive further, but more to just picking up a new skill. Even up till today, I still work hands-on for my customers and I enjoy it even though it can be tiring sometimes. When asked for any words of advice for her past self, and tips for aspiring beauticians, Wendy jokingly said not to be a boss and recommended working for a company instead. All jokes aside, Wendy definitely had no regrets tapping into the industry and going through the challenges. She believes that there are always different ways for females to be beautiful regardless of race or income. Holding her principle to provide female empowerment and confidence, she hopes to provide services that will help customers gain that confidence in terms of first impressions.

THE BARE NECESSITIES

W

ant flawless skin like your Korean idol? Or just wishing your bare face can be good enough to walk out of the house? Here’s some simple bare necessities of life for your skin! Regardless of whether you are a male or female, we can always appreciate beautiful smooth skin. Here’s a list of must have skincare:

can try cream-based moisturisers as sleeping in air-conditioning will soak up moisture from your skin.

Cleanser - A must have – boys, you may say water is great, but if you sweat and have not seen flawless skin for yourselves, then water may just not be enough to clean your face. Some people however are generally born with nice skin – but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use cleansers. You may opt for chemical-free types like handmade soaps or your friendly drugstore variety to your own budget. Remember, it doesn’t have to be branded. Just as long as it cleans and does not sting your face. Handmade soaps are usually highly recommended especially for sensitive skin, or if you’re also environmentally friendly. Avoid Scrub cleansers as they may be too harsh for the skin – but scrubbing is needed at least bi-weekly to scrap gunks away.

Sunblock - Finally, the Mafia Boss and MUST-HAVE even if you skipped the first 2. Sunny sunblock! We are always in contact with UV rays whether you are indoors or outdoors. In front of the laptop screen or staring 24/7 on our phones, which also emits UV lights; the sunblock is definitely a must have and truly helps in reducing not only pigmentation, but also helps reduce breakouts! This is because breakouts are caused by a lot of radicals and bad particles in the air. Sunblock not only protects your skin from these cancerous nasties – it also helps prevent your skin from aging rapidly caused by UVA rays. With our level of sun exposure in Malaysia, it’s definitely a must. But which SPF is suitable? For normal daily indoor use – go for SPF 15 +++; look out for sunscreen that contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Moisturiser - Yes, I just skipped through toner and essences, serums and a whole bunch of steps for the skincare junkies like me. But for the bare necessities of life for a lazy bum like yours truly – you can skip all that and still live a day with good skin. Finding the right moisturiser however, could sometimes be a hassle, especially if we live in a place with sunny, humid, 365 days of tropical weather like Malaysia. Hence, cream-based moisturisers can sometimes be too much for the heat, and would feel slightly uncomfortable. So, opt for a gel type moisturiser! It’s more refreshing and it doesn’t leave a sticky after-feeling as much. If you have dry skin and sleep under air-conditioning, you

TIP: Leave a cup of water next to your bedside and watch it dry up in the morning, this is to reduce the dryness in the air. Fun fact – it works the same in a chiller of cakes too!

TIP: SPF 15-30-45 doesn’t make too much of a difference; while +++ means the timeframe of protection. Although the more ++ the better; it is also advisable to reapply every 3-4 hours, especially if you are out under the sun most of the day. ECO TIP: Try to check the chemical details on your sunscreen and avoid buying sunblocks with these ingredients if you are going to sea! This is because they kills out coral and causes coral bleaching. Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3, BP-3) - Sunscreen ingredient that disrupts coral reproduction, causes coral bleaching, and damages coral DNA. Butylparaben, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC) & Octinoxate (Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate) - ingredients shown to cause coral bleaching.

REJUVENATION OF THE VAGINA USING LASER. RESTORE YOUR INTIMATE INSTINCTS.

M

any women today are willing to spend a large sum of money to get the best and maximum facial treatments. They are willing to do all this just to get a healthier, more radiant face and reach as far as possible from the effects of aging. However, what about their vaginal condition, don’t they think that their ‘miss V’ also requires similar treatment? Did you know that just like the skin on the rest of a woman’s body, the vagina will also experience the aging process in line with that person’s increasing age? The aging process of the vaginal area begins when women are in their 20s. Frequent changes are like fat reduction in the labia majora (outer labia), and subsequently followed by changes within the vagina. When the pre-menopause process starts, the surface of the wall in the vaginal area will become thinner; the muscles in the pelvis will weaken and relax. Around the same time, women tend to lament from their husbands being unsatisfied in the bedroom, thus causing some women to start feeling less confident or ashamed to engage in sexual activity with their spouse, which might cause the collapse of the household.

AESTHETIC

Realizing this fact, vaginal rejuvenation trends using lasers (more often called laser vaginal rejuvenation / laser vaginal tightening) are now known to many women. In the past, many women were ashamed and afraid to see the doctor for procedures as such because previous procedures required surgery (vaginoplasty/ hymenoplasty), postoperative pain, and had a longer ‘downtime’. But now, with advanced technology, the laser procedure can be performed without the need for surgery; it does not require anesthetic, it’s painless, fast and easy, and does not have any downtime. Treatment time is about 15 minutes and women can go back to work or to their everyday activities as usual after the treatment. The treatment requires 1-3 visits depending on the condition of the woman (e.g. age, number of children, birthing & surgical history, bladder problems, etc.). After effects of Laser treatments are usually faster and more effective and for some individuals the effects are almost immediate.

VAGINA

• • •

• •

Tightens and thickens the vaginal wall. Reduces dehydration (hypo-secretion) and pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia). Repairs the vaginal mucosa wall by stimulating the formation of collagen (collagen remodeling of vaginal tissue) thus enabling the tightening of the vagina. Anti-inflammation is particularly helpful in treating frequent vaginal discharge (recurrent thrush) and elevating immunity. Helps to cope with ‘urinary incontinence’ problems or better known as urinary incontinence where this condition occurs in women who have had many children, elder women or women who have ever had surgery to deliver children in which the bladder muscle becomes traumatic and weak. Most women complain of “leakage” when they laugh, sneeze or cough.

LABIA • • • •

Whiten the labia surface. Eliminate fine lines and the effects of aging on the labia. Firms up the surface of the labia. Helps to cope with ‘urinary incontinence’ problems or better known as urinary incontinence where this condition occurs in women who have had many children, elder women or women who have ever had surgery to deliver children in which the bladder muscle becomes traumatic and weak. A Tutorial on Toothpaste

W

e use it everyday and most of us take it for granted. Toothpaste has been part of our routines and we barely even notice its importance. Did you know that toothpaste isn’t necessary for cleaning teeth? Well, learn more about it with Dr. Sylvia Lim of Phi Dental and find out if you’ve been using the right toothpaste all this while.

a long way. So be careful with the amount of the ingredients used in toothpaste. Toothpaste that contains high amounts of abrasive materials can cause enamel and gum thinning. Also, if you suffer from frequent mouth ulcers or irritation, look for SLSfree (sodium lauryl sulfate) toothpaste. SLS is the ingredient that creates foam or bubbles from toothpaste.

Toothpaste isn’t necessary when it comes to cleaning your teeth. A soft-bristled brush and proper brushing technique combined with regular flossing and limiting sugary food is enough. However, toothpaste does benefit in other ways such as preventing gingivitis, cavities, and tooth decay.

At the end of the day, the toothpaste should suit your individual needs. Nevertheless, you have to make sure they contain fluoride, or else it will merely freshen your breath without giving your mouth any type of protection from cavities.

The most important ingredient in toothpaste is fluoride. This mineral is responsible for fighting tooth decay and helps harden the enamel. There are only 3 forms of fluoride recognized by the Food and Drug Administration, which are sodium fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate, and stannous fluoride. Another important ingredient is calcium carbonate, an abrasive that helps remove plaque, debris, and surface stains that can clean teeth and even whiten your teeth. Speaking of which, whitening toothpaste does work, as long as they contain enough whitening ingredients like hydrogen peroxide. However, you should keep in mind that a little goes

BEING CREATIVE

Looking good, feeling better

W

e all want to be beautiful, don’t we? And more than that, we want and need to be well. Wellness is not just the absence of illness; it’s being happy in your skin. Some of the most attractive people I know are far from being conventionally beautiful or even particularly thin.

heart, breathing and muscles. Just remember to use waterproof sunscreen and reapply regularly. I wear a hat sometimes too – people laugh but I don’t care. Look for swimming lessons and aquarobics (there are some at Sutera) which don’t put stress on your body and cause injury.

We all know that we must eat well: less sugar, trans fats and carbs. Sorry Sabahans. Less noodles and rice, less frying, fewer sweetened drinks and puddings. Lots of fruit and vegetables, no snacking, no gorging on all the delicious things that we know aren’t good for us.

I do not feel qualified to discuss beauty products. There are plenty of people who know more than I do, so I would suggest a trip to a mall and lots of questions before you buy. I have learnt that parabens should be avoided if possible, that’s all.

British people apparently have never been so healthy as when the Second World War limited access to expensive processed foods. And they had to grow a lot of what they ate themselves, so exercise came into the mix too. They had to deal with powdered egg (yuk), a tiny amount of butter and meat was rationed tightly. Some of the recipes of the time must have been disgusting but they don’t appear to have done all that much harm. When food became available again, in the 1950s, Elizabeth David embraced Mediterranean food. She wrote about flavour, not quantity. About freshness and herbs and spices. Sabahans are good on both, but in my (admittedly small) experience it seems very difficult to find food that doesn’t use MSG and a lot of salt or sugar. You love your frying, and your sweet thick sauces, which, I venture to suggest, drown out the actual flavour of the food? I have looked in vain for local restaurants that serve food that is good for you, so there is no doubt that I am a little larger than when I came, three years ago. I love salads, but they are drowned in thick sweet sauces and dressings (calories, my dears, calories). A mixture of good olive oil, a little lemon juice or vinegar, a splash of honey, a spoonful of mustard, crushed garlic and salt and pepper is much much better. Do try it. Grilling is better than frying (so much quicker to rub the oil you use straight on to the hips which is where it will go, trust me). Raw is good and the oven helps a lot too, if you roast food without washing it in a gallon of oil. Exercise is a good thing. I find it impossible to exercise in the Sabah temperature, but I know lots of people get up at crack of dawn to run or cycle. Good on them. There are gyms – I hope A J Pyro will be able to reopen his when this virus is under more control.

As a minimum, I use a light foundation, some blusher when I look like a wet weekend, and some lipstick. I often don’t even bother with these, but there is no doubt that they can perk up a face. Get a good haircut – hairdressers, LISTEN to your clients, and don’t send everyone out with the same thing. Do you feel my pain? I think it’s really important to make yourself FEEL good: foot massages and reflexology (I go to Helen’s), flattering and long lasting eyelash extensions (Lam Lam – on Facebook), facials. I have looked for a good body massage or aromatherapy, but so far no luck. Too much thumping; rubbing hard enough to make your client whimper is not healing. Is there anyone out there? All this contributes to wellbeing, although beauty remains in the eye of the beholder: it’s the genes too. Pointless to set up in competition with Kate Moss. She is now 47, and just as lovely as she was at 19. Just different. She once said ‘Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’ which sounds great if you are an international supermodel, but I bet even she is finding that getting older adds to the waistline. So what, I say? There are so many beautiful older women and handsome men and I really believe that as we learn more about our bodies, our skin, our diets, each generation has the ammunition to be more attractive than the one before. Discuss.

I choose to swim, and try to make it fairly smooth, steady and quite long. Condos have pools and there is your lovely sea – if you can find a bit of clean quiet beach, don’t just splash about, but use the natural buoyancy and health-giving minerals of the sea water and do some proper swimming. Excellent for

Negativity of Modern Living

o live a healthy lifestyle, we all need to take care of our body. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and it deserves every bit of love! Besides having a good skincare regime, the rest of your body needs care as well. Don’t just focus on your face that you end up neglecting everything else! I know acne can be a pain for some, especially when they are stubborn and won’t go away. The right way to treat your skin is to listen to it. If a food or product is irritating your skin, the best course of action is to stop using it! Find out what skin concerns you have before you start treating it. Who knows, you might find out that your pimple wasn’t a pimple after all.

flaws. Just because you have a scar or acne doesn’t mean you aren’t beautiful. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. Besides, as long as you feel beautiful and feel good about yourself, you are beautiful.

No matter how busy you are, it is always a good idea to take a few days out to pamper yourself! Give yourself a day off and enjoy a relaxing day. Whether it’s a social media break, or a cosy day cuddled in bed. Sometimes you overwork your body, and you don’t even know it! Book a spa day or get some fresh air if you haven’t in a while. There is no wrong in treating yourself! It’s important to take time off for yourself and if that means spending time with friends and family, go ahead! But, if it also means spending some alone time, there’s nothing wrong either! Remember that beauty is not just on the outside. You don’t have to look perfect all the time! THe miss universe pageant

B

orneo stands proud this year to have our beloved Francisca Luhong James from Sarawak representing Malaysia in the Miss Universe Pageant 2020. A mixed Kayan, Kenyah and Iban with her native roots of Dayak, she has participated in pageants since 2015, which makes her debut at 19 years old as the second-runner up of Miss Cultural Harvest Festival 2015 during the Sarawak Harvest and Folklore festival. With humility, many cultural insights were brought to the world stage as she represented the pride of Sarawak.

In 1960, the interview portion was then introduced to get more essence and cultural exchange, where the national costumes became a pageant staple. Although along the days, body types and beauty perceptions were becoming very similar. However, winners were more diverse with the first Black Miss Universe in 1977 won by Miss Trinidad-Tobago, Janelle Commissiong. The first transgender contestant in Miss Universe history made her debut in 2018 - Angela Ponce, Miss Spain; and first openly LGBTQ+ contestant in 2019, Swe Zin Htet of Myanmar.

Miss Universe is an annual international beauty pageant based in the United States and organized by the Miss Universe Organization. Every year, countries around the world would send their best representative to compete and showcase their culture, and beauty from within and out. The organization celebrates women of all cultures, backgrounds and empowers them to realize their goals through experiences that build selfconfidence and create opportunities for success.

Aside from admiring beautiful pageant beauties and amazing costumes (which are the usual highlights fo the pageant), the pageant’s real advocacy is focused on humanitarian issues and a voice to push for positive change to the world. Whether it is to LGBTQ+ rights, to recent issues such as Unity for Asian communities (Myanmar’s fight is among voices raised by representatives this year); Speaking out for the better of the world socially and politically are catalysts for awareness and acceptance, thus contributing major movements to the society. Even though it still takes both sides for action and contributions from the public for it to be realized, we are definitely working in progress for world peace.

Miss Universe started in 1952, as a marketing stunt by a Californian clothing company, Pacific Knitting Mills, after a rival pageant Miss America refused to wear one of the swimsuits. The company decided to make its own pageant, Miss Universe. In the early years, Miss USA was essentially a preliminary phase in the Miss Universe contest, similar to what we have now; where countries would have their own pageants prior to Miss Universe. During old times, it was more to physical beauty and aesthetics to cater to the marketing aspect of it.

by Geraldine Yong Image | Various Sources 32

Hence, Miss Universe is not just the beauty in the looks – but the heart and core principles of every country play an important role as well. Contestants uphold themselves in confidence while sharing cultural heritage, radiating beauty with the weigh of the nation on their shoulders for the world to see. It is one of the most look-forwarded pageants with over 500 million viewers in over 190 territories annually. This year, it was held on May 16, in Hollywood, Florida – crowning Andrea Meza of Mexico at the finale.

e’re back at Convene House again the second time round. Their beverages remain the same however they’ve returned with a brand new food menu. Every single item on it is worth trying as they’re all luscious and delicious. The Vege Dumplings can be enjoyed during a rainy and chilly day; great for vegans or vegetarians. Their Garlic Grilled Cheese Sourdough is superbly great for a snack with a cup of Houjacha or Dirty Matcha Latte, or Ice Fruit Tea. We also loved the Golden Banana Nutella Toast on Hokkaido Milk Bread. I certainly cannot miss talking about their cakes and tarts. The subtle sweetness of the Apple Crumble with ice cream still lingers in my mouth. Other popular favorites are Houjicha Cheesecake, Honey Chiffon Cheese, Lemon Tart, Sakura Medeleine and upcoming new flavor, Chocolate Orange Chiffon. Both food and beverage are currently available for takeaway. Easton’s Sarawak Laksa is also available in Convene House.

ocated in Sutera Avenue with a direct elevator from ground floor straight up to the 11th floor, this urban rooftop restaurant and bar offers anyone who comes here with an amazing view of KK city. Opening its door back in August 2020 just when the pandemic hit did not dampen their spirit and it has been operating ever since. We had a chat with owner Chalie and his wife and partner; Cynthia, where they explained that Awan is actually a sister outlet and their main one was actually 6ixty9ine Club. Due to the MCO, they decided to halt the operations of 6ixty9ine Club in Waterfront KK and relocate just next to Awan Restobar. The bar is currently still under renovations and their focus is currently shifted towards Awan Restobar. The sexy black and red interior of Awan Restobar was inspired by 6ixty9ine’s decor and although the restaurant might look exclusive, they do offer reasonable deals for their menu. When asked about some of their specialties, I was ecstatic to be told that some of their drinks are served with cotton candy! The 1st item on the menu is their signature coffee called Caffe D’awan. Topped with cotton candy, Chalie explained that the cotton candy does not only resemble ‘awan’ (cloud) but it also works as the sweetener for the sugarless coffee. When the vapour from the coffee hits the cotton candy, it will begin to melt and drip down into your cup like the rain. They also serve selections of cocktails and also mocktails. Again, topped with adorable cotton candy, order their Rooftop Rhasta mocktail which has a combination of pandan, banana puree and 42

watermelon monin for that extra refreshing taste. If you are up for some adult drinks with a fun twist, their signature cocktail; Awan on Eleven, is for you. A combination of vodka, grenadine, blue lagoon monin, mint, lime juice and kiwi and of course topped with a cotton candy too. If you are feeling a bit daring, try their signature shot, Awan-A-High which includes galliano, kahlua, baileys and peppermint. I had fun chewing on cotton candy while sipping on their refreshing drinks! Awan Restobar serves a selection of fusion dishes. Start off light with their classic Caesar Salad. That crunchy romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, boiled egg, crunchy japanese cucumber, tossed with their caesar dressing and topped with crunchy garlic croutons does keep your appetite going. Want to add extra protein to your salad? Selections of smoked duck or smoked salmon are also available as add-ons.

Next on the menu was their Chicken Parmigiana. Pan seared breaded boneless chicken topped with tomato ragout and melted mozzarella cheese, this dish was served with spaghetti and salad on the side. The chicken was generously coated with cheese and their pasta tasted mild. Their head chef; Chef William, has working experience from Italy itself and he tried bringing in the authentic taste of Italy into his cooking at Awan Restobar. The next item is probably my most favorite one of all. True to its name, their Awesome Oxtail Asam Pedas is a must try! Served with white rice, acar, fried tempeh and prawn crackers, this dish screams flavour. The meat was cooked to perfection and came out incredibly tender. Dip the prawn crackers into the gravy, it is gonna be amazing! You don’t feel like rice today? Order their Grilled Lamb Loin. Perfectly chargrilled, this dish was served with a side of spring vegetables together with freshly sautéed potatoes and onion. Pair it with their mint scented brown sauce for an extra flavour. Chef William mentioned that whenever he cooks, he tries his best to make his dishes perfectly seasoned. So if you want to add extra seasonings, salt and pepper are within reach on your table.

Always ready for dessert, Awan Restobar offers homemade Baked Cheesecake. A fresh slice of tangy lemon flavoured cheesecake is a perfect palate cleanser and possibly the best way to end your flavourful journey. Or, you could also order their Awan Grande double scoop ice cream of your choice with toppings and of course topped with more cotton candy! Awan Restobar is also a perfect venue to celebrate special occasions and part of their service is to specially decorate your dining area upon request with certain charges. Chalie’s goal is to do something different in Sabah because working in Kuala Lumpur opened his eyes to a lot of potential and with all that experience that he has gained, he wants to contribute back to his hometown. To do something out of the ordinary for the Sabahan community is his goal.
