It’s no secret that camera companies are now shifting to mirrorless systems instead of the bulky DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras. Canon, albeit a bit late to the game, have come out swinging with their last few mirrorless camera releases. The latest in the R line is focused for beginners or enthusiasts looking for a budget camera from the camera giant Canon, the EOS R10.

The R10 sports a light and portable build, making it easier to bring around during your shoots. What makes the smaller size possible is the use of a 24.2 Megapixel crop sensor. With a 1.6x crop, it’ll be able to provide an additional telephoto (zoomed in) effect to your photos. Said sensor is also able to deliver cleaner low-light images, no matter if you’re using ISO 100 or 32,000. Images can also be rendered in 10-bit HDR PQ, offering better dynamic range to truly show all the details in the scene.

One welcome upgrade is the great continuous burst shooting on a budget to capture every bit of the action. With the mechanical shutter, users can enjoy up to 15 frames per second (fps) of shots while the electronic shutter will be able to provide up to 26 fps instead. Plus, with higher frame rates, you would definitely need better auto-focusing so your subjects are always in focus. The R10 has 651 focus points, making for precise focusing and tracking of subjects.

Apart from the functions I mentioned, this camera can shoot 4K videos (unfortunately with a 1.8x crop) and has stabilisation feature that utilises Coordinated Control Image Stabilisation

(IS) through the combination of Movie Digital IS and Optical IS on compatible lenses. You won’t have to worry about shaky images now, that’s for sure.

Canon’s R10 is an awesome addition to the R lineup. However, I do have a few gripes. At RM3600 just for the body, it’s definitely pricey, especially when this is Canon’s “budget” camera. You could opt for Canon’s M50, the R10’s predecessor, but the M-mount is essentially dead at this point. Speaking about lens mounts, the RF-mount is still new in the market, so there’s not many options when it comes to native lenses. These lenses will also fetch bigger price tags as third parties have only just gotten the green light to produce cheaper alternatives.

The way it stands, the R10 is definitely a great camera to use, both professionally and for beginners. However, you do need to do more research and decide if it’s going to be worth the investment in the long run.

Better EV Uses

We’ve covered electric vehicles (EVs) before and I’ve been a bit critical about them, nevertheless I still believe they have a place on our roads in the future. Considering our terrain and infrastructure at the moment, plus the need for further innovation of EVs, I don’t think many of the popular EVs today are suitable for all Sabahan car owners today. However, when the infrastructure catches up, here are a few EVs that might be the norm roaming our streets.

First of all, the compact EVs are perfect for navigating our cities, urban, and even suburban roads. EVs such as the Nissan Leaf, Honda E, or the Hyundai Ioniq 5 offer amazing range, stylish design (especially the Ioniq and E), and are small enough to navigate the tight city spaces. What they’re not great at, and this goes for all EVs, is going on long journeys across Sabah. Yes, their stated range might seem sufficient for a trip from Penampang to Keningau and back, but the winding mountain roads will take up a lot of power through your journey.

SUVs (sports utility vehicles) and pickup trucks are currently the rage these days. We see a lot of gigantic diesel guzzling Ford Rangers, Toyota Hilux, and Isuzu DMax on the road. That’s why I think if and when the Rivian R1T ever lands here, they’ll be really popular here. Not only does it have 600hp to 835hp (horsepower), but you have a lot of storage room for all the gear you want to have with you. It’s also great for off-roading, having air suspension that can lift it to a maximum of 15 inches of ground clearance. It’s definitely suited for the Sabahan roads.

These next few cars are what I think is either the small step to going fully EV, or it is the future. I’m talking about plug-in hybrids such as the new Toyota Prius and the Volvo XC60. Use

the electric motors to navigate the city and the petrol engine for longer journeys. I hope you can see where I’m going with this. It’ll emit less carbon dioxide during your daily city commute, while giving you the opportunity to travel for holidays without worrying about the range. So, kind of a win-win in my opinion.

Even if I still have my reservations about EVs, I’m still looking forward to our infrastructure improving because I can’t wait for the Rivian to grace our roads. All jokes aside, cleaner emissions is the future we all deserve, and definitely the future of road travel.

THE TEMPLE OF THE THREE SAINTS

In Sandakan, there is a Sabah temple that remains standing after 130 years. Built in 1887, Sam Sing Kung Temple is the 3rd oldest Chinese temple in the district of Sandakan, Sabah.

Sam Sing Kung Temple is now a famous nature tourism destination and is one of the attractions along the Sandakan Heritage Trail. It is located at the edge of the town field at Singapore Road (Jalan Singapura), in the city centre of Sandakan.

The temple was built by the four Chinese communities, namely the Hakka, Cantonese, Hainanese and Teochew, mainly from the Guangdong Province of China. In the late 19th century, thousands of Chinese were admitted by British rulers to work as labourers, farmers, and merchants to develop Sabah. These Chinese immigrants also brought in their religions and established Sam Sing Kung as a religious centre in Sandakan.

Literally Sam Sing Kung means the Temple of the Three Saints, who are Lord Guan, Mazu, and Wenchang Emperor. The three saints are a great combination because they can answer prayers on prosperity, peace and protection, and health, which cover most wishes of their followers.

Sam Sing Kung is a Taoist temple that practices polytheism, which believes that there are multiple gods or deities, who are like the officers of heaven and underworld. About 20 deities are sitting in Sam Sing Kung. Taoism and Buddhism have been influencing each other for thousands of years in China, so you can even find altars of Buddha such as Guanyin in this temple.

Sam Sing Kung is truly a temple of memories and heritages. When you enter the main door, you would see the palanquin of Mazu, which is used in Chingay parade and is as old as the temple. Another interesting antique is a bronze chime bell donated by the first Kapitan Cina of Sandakan, Fung Ming Shan about 100 years ago. Kapitan is a leader officially appointed by British rulers to look after the local Chinese community.

When you’re at the temple, feel free to tour around or light up some incense sticks to worship the deities (if you are a believer). The staff there are accustomed to tourists and would share some stories with you. This temple seems like an ideal filming location for a mid-twentieth century drama due to its nostalgia vibe.

Don’t miss out on your chance to visit Sam Sing Kung when you travel to Sandakan. A truly interesting temple that is worth a visit.

MERAKI DAAT SABAH INITIATIVE LAUNCHES STAGE 1 OF PROJECT PICASSO

eco news

Association, Sabah Parks, SEAG, Soka Gakai Malaysia, Universiti Technology Mara (UITM), University Malaysia Sabah (UMS), UMS LEO Club, Reef Check Malaysia, Intrepid Travel were amongst those that took part.

Meraki Daat was extremely grateful for the continued support from its strategic partners, Sabah Parks and Trash Hero. A total of 2.6 tonnes of rubbish was collected where 485 kg was plastics, 44.8kg was glass, 83 kg were tins and aluminiums and the balance of non recyclable rubbish.

The following day, Meraki Daat organised a half day workshop that included the introduction and details of Project Picasso by its President, Michelle, Design Thinking workshop through its strategic partner, Happy Plastics by its trainer, Jana, and a demo on shredding plastics before converting it to blocks that could be used as pavement material by SEAG Chairman, Iskandar.

Meraki Daat Sabah Initiative (Meraki Daat) successfully organised its second Mega Island Beach Clean Up sponsored by Legenda Bumimas Sdn Bhd as part of its Project Picasso Initiative followed by a workshop the following day on design thinking and plastics recycling.

The 2nd Mega Island beach clean up project was held on 27 May 2023 from 7am to 10am at Kg Lobong and SK Gaya on Gaya Island. A whooping 380 participants from mainland attended the clean up which surpassed the association’s initial target of 200 volunteers. A total of 50 families in the village took part while 30 students and adults from the parents teachers association cleaned up the school vicinity.

The aim of this Beach Clean Up program was to continue to create and imbed segregation at source under the association’s first project, Unwrapping Plastics KK, that was funded by the US Embassy and ended on 10 May this year. It was also to continue to motivate and further educate the villagers on the island to take responsibility for the rubbish that continues to pile up on the island’s shores no matter its source, be it from its own people, villages next door, surrounding islands and resorts as well as the mainland. The third objective of the island beach clean up was to continue to create awareness amongst the citizens of the city on the dire waste problems that were at hand.

The event saw established associations, educational and corporate bodies joining forces to create impact on building awareness. Sabah Tourism Board, Marine Research Foundation, Department of Environment, SK Gaya and the Parents Teacher

A total of 27 villages from Kg Lobong including adults and a few children were transported to the SEAG recycling lab at Sabah Trade Centre while EXCO members from the University Malaysia Sabah Leo and LIONS Host KK were also in attendance. The program entailed the short term and long term objectives of the association (Project Picasso), various methods on how to recycle and upcycle using existing resources (Happy Plastics) and the shredding of plastics to not only reduce the space required to store plastic waste and therefore making easier to transfer, but to also convert it to construction blocks that would be used for fixing potholes, making walkways and pavements just to name a few (SEAG).

The workshop achieved its goal as at the end of the event, the villagers were determined to implement the next steps required to meet both short term and long-term goals. Apart from that, everyone was impressed and delighted with such technology that could reduce their burdens so much so that the women were already discussing on a timetable where they could collect and shred the plastics themselves as the men continue to go to work during the day and the UMS Leo and Lions Club Host were discussing various strategic partnerships to assist Meraki Daat in achieving its goals while preserving the environment together.

The public are encouraged to contact the association should they have any inquiries or wish to partner in any way while staying up to date on the progress of this initiative through its website and social media page.

breathing and respiration exercises

Diaphragmatic Breathing: This exercise focuses on engaging the diaphragm for deep, controlled inhalation. Begin by placing one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. Inhale slowly through your nose, allowing your abdomen to rise while keeping your chest relatively still. Exhale gently, controlling the release of air. Practicing diaphragmatic breathing regularly strengthens the diaphragm and helps singers achieve optimal breath support.

Rib Expansion Exercise: This exercise promotes better lung capacity and improved breath control. Stand or sit comfortably, with your hands resting on your sides just below your ribs. Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your ribcage to expand laterally. As you exhale through slightly pursed lips, envision the ribs contracting back to their original position. Practice this exercise to enhance your ability to control and manipulate your breath while singing.

Breath Suspension Exercise: This exercise trains singers to sustain their breath during longer phrases or challenging vocal sections. Inhale deeply and exhale gently. Then, take a small, quick inhalation and hold your breath for a few seconds before releasing it slowly. Repeat this exercise, gradually increasing the duration of breath suspension. It helps build lung capacity and strengthens breath control for more expressive singing.

With this issue celebrating our voices, we’re changing gears to bring you some breathing and respiration exercises that are not going to just help you in the gym, but your next karaoke session as well!

When you’re working with our personal trainers, you’ll find yourself constantly being reminded to breath during and after the workout. Proper respiration is key not just to maximise your effectiveness during exercises, but also plays a key role in relaxing the body post workout in order to get us back to rest and recover mode to maximise the benefits of the work we’ve just performed.

Respiration and diaphragm control work hand in hand with our vocal cords to regulate our bodies’ response to stress and anxiety. There’s a reason we’re advised to take a deep breath when calming ourselves down, and also a reason why humming and chanting are parts of meditation practice dating back to ancient times!

Practicing these daily will bring you these benefits and more, but you’ll also find a nice side effect in your expanded vocal range the next time an Adele song comes on in your car.

Lip Trills: Lip trills, also known as lip rolls, are excellent exercises for enhancing breath control, flexibility, and resonance. Start by gently pressing your lips together and exhaling while creating a buzzing sound. The airflow should vibrate your lips. Practice lip trills on various scales and pitches, focusing on maintaining a consistent and controlled airflow. This exercise promotes relaxation, flexibility, and vocal agility.

Sustained Sighs: Sustained sighs help singers develop breath control and a smooth vocal tone. Inhale deeply, and as you exhale, release a slow and controlled “sigh” sound on a single note. Focus on sustaining the sigh smoothly without breaks or strain. Gradually increase the length of your sighs to challenge your breath control and improve vocal endurance.

The Dual Role of Dentistry: Balancing Healthcare and Aesthetics

Dentistry today encompasses both healthcare and aesthetic aspects. While its primary focus is on oral health, advancements in technology and societal changes have led to the incorporation of cosmetic procedures. Understanding the evolving role of dentistry and the implications of prioritising aesthetics is crucial for informed decision-making in dental care.

Dentistry’s Role:

Dentistry plays a crucial role in healthcare by preventing, diagnosing, and treating oral diseases. Regular dental checkups, cleanings, and treatments maintain oral health, prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and infections. Additionally, it addresses oral pain, tooth loss, and jaw misalignment, which impact overall well-being. On the aesthetic side, dentistry offers various cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening, braces, and veneers to enhance smiles and improve self-confidence.

Changes over the Years:

Dentistry has evolved from primarily treating dental diseases to incorporating cosmetic dentistry. Advancements in technology, materials, and techniques have facilitated this shift. Media influence and societal emphasis on appearance have driven the demand for cosmetic procedures, prompting dentistry to adapt to meet these expectations.

Braces and Veneers:

While braces and veneers are commonly associated with aesthetics, they also serve important healthcare purposes. Braces correct misaligned teeth and jaw discrepancies, improving oral health by preventing tooth decay, gum disease, and jaw disorders. Veneers not only enhance the appearance of

teeth but also protect damaged teeth from further deterioration, contributing to their functional aspect.

Balancing Healthcare and Aesthetics:

Braces and veneers demonstrate the dual purpose of dentistry in healthcare and aesthetics. Orthodontic treatments with braces improve oral health by aligning teeth and jaws, facilitating better chewing and reducing dental complications. Veneers offer both functional and aesthetic benefits, safeguarding weakened teeth while enhancing smiles.

Considerations and Concerns:

When focusing mainly on aesthetics, several factors warrant consideration. Maintaining oral health alongside aesthetics is crucial, as neglecting dental issues can lead to untreated problems and future complications. Long-term sustainability, preservation of natural tooth structure, emotional well-being, and financial considerations are other aspects to be mindful of when prioritising aesthetics.

Dentistry plays a vital role in both healthcare and aesthetics. While addressing oral health remains paramount, the field has expanded to include cosmetic procedures. It is essential to strike a balance between oral health and aesthetic improvements when making decisions about dental care. By considering the evolving role of dentistry and the implications of prioritising aesthetics, individuals can make informed choices that contribute to their overall oral well-being and self-confidence.

RANTS & RAVES

Well, do you? Kinda hard these days since most of us prefer texting. Gone are the days where we would answer a phone with no idea who was calling but we took our chances, let’s just say we were adventurous.

Truth be told, your voice says a lot about you. When you finally stop texting and actually call someone, that person’s voice gives you a little more insight into the person you are talking to. You sometimes can guess where the person is from, what mood they are in, how friendly they are and more.

Just like a firm handshake, a ‘solid’ voice sets the tone when meeting someone for the first time. It either impresses you or falls short. As the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover but how can you not be affected by the tone, rhythm and style of someone’s voice.

I remember having a friend in college who spoke very fast, like very fast and initially, I couldn’t understand him when he would speak so there was a lot of “could you repeat that?” and “what was that?” during the first few months of class. I know when my daughter has had too much caffeine too because she speaks a mile a minute.

Speaking too slow is also a problem. Speakers and politicians and monotonous voices that put people to sleep. We should make it mandatory for them to join Toastmasters or a public speaking

program. But then again, maybe that’s their sole purpose to bore you to sleep that you won’t remember what they promised to do for the community.

Then there are those who are too loud. I find these people obnoxious and honestly speaking sometimes my voice irritates the heck out of me and I’m more conscious of it when I have a migraine. And in recent months, with tourists coming back into town, my friends and I have noticed that certain foreigners from certain countries are unnecessarily loud. Are they like that from needing to be heard or needing to tell everyone heeeeey I’m foreign!

Get ready people! I’m about to rave about something… Finally. Let’s appreciate sound for all that it is. The sound of a voice can be reassuring; the sound of music can be uplifting when feeling down and the sound of nature can be soothing. Silence can be deafening to those who are uncomfortable with their thoughts so when you open your mouth or create a sound make sure it’s worthwhile.

Do you hear what I hear?

Did you know? Transformers actually began as Japanese toy lines in the 80’s called Micro Change and Diaclone. Obviously, they were robots that were able to transform into everyday vehicles, electronics, and even weapons. Hasbro bought the two brands and began creating backstories for them with the help of Marvel Comics. Through their evolution, one thing has remained a constant, the iconic voice of Optimus Prime.

Before Optimus was Optimus, he was formerly known as Orion Pax. In Japan, he is referred to as Convoy. The character is almost always depicted as having a strong moral compass, sound decision making skills, and most importantly, an excellent leader. With these sets of characteristics, Optimus surely needs a deep and commanding voice. Through the years and the many iterations of the Transformers series, he’s had a few voice actors help provide that presence, such as Ron Hayden, Neil Kaplan, Garry Chalk, Robert Belgrade, David Kaye, Jon Bailey, and Alan Tudyk. However, there’s been one voice that we all associate Optimus with, that man is Peter Cullen.

Peter was born in Montreal, Quebec on July 28, 1941. He is of Irish descent and has three siblings. Hir brother, Larry, was a retired captain in the United States Marine Corps and would inspire Peter with the voice of Optimus. He auditioned for the role of Optimus in the original animated series, which was “the opportunity of the year” for him, and won not only the part for Optimus but for Ironhide as well. Funnily enough, Peter had no idea of Optimus Prime’s popularity until the character’s somewhat controversial death in a 1986 animated film. However,

POP CULTURE

the character was then revived in subsequent episodes and led the Autobots for the final five episodes of the original American cartoon series.

It was not until 2007 that Peter reprised his role in the live action series of Transformers movies. He was only contractually obligated to voice the popular character up to The Last Knight, however, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has always welcomed Peter to voice Optimus for as long as he wanted. Apart from cartoon series and live action movies, Peter’s voice was also used in the Transformers videogames and recent television series. He was nominated for a 2011 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for his performance in the premiere season of Transformer: Prime.

You see, Optimus wouldn’t be Optimus if it wasn’t for the voice he has. Yeah, he may look awesome and have the characteristics to set him apart from his counterparts, but without Peter Cullen’s voice, I don’t think he would be immortalised as a pop culture icon.

DRIVING THROUGH WITH OUR VOICES

Drive-throughs aren’t really a new trend. They’re very useful for a faster and more convenient food ordering experience. Around Kota Kinabalu, a lot of drive-throughs have popped up over the years. Some outlets even offer drive-ins instead too. Although, I do question the use of the term, but that’s a story for later. Anyway, this time I’d like to discuss some of the things that make up a drive-through and the little details that surround them.

Although there are a lot of drive-throughs today, you might’ve noticed most of them have golden arches over them. However, they’re not the only guys in town who offer the service. The colonel and a certain mermaid also have drive-through outlets around town. No matter which you prefer, all these drive-through outlets are located near dense populations or along roads that lead to said populations. Obviously, it’s so people going home from work can conveniently stop by to get dinner, or those going to work can get some needed breakfast, and everything in between.

If you’re not familiar with the concept of a drive-through, you basically drive up to a box, talk to the attendant taking your order, and “drive through” to pay and take your food. When you think about it, it’s quite intriguing to say the least, that the microphones and speakers used to take our orders are good enough for an intelligible conversation. Even when the winds are howling or the traffic gets loud, you can still order comfortably from your car without shouting at the top of your lungs.

During your visit to one of these drive-throughs, you’ll notice a lot of menus that’ll either be constantly showing regular meals, or ones that are changing every few moments to advertise the latest promotional meals, desserts, and drinks. They’re there for those who usually have a hard time making decisions of what to order or always forgets the names of a menu item. Though, when you do have trouble, the attendant will always help you out so you get the food you want.

After ordering you’ll usually advance your vehicle to a window to make the payment. Like most restaurants, you have cash or cashless options to pay. E-wallets and QR code scans have now come a long way to make payments more convenient rather than relying on cash and cards. Starbucks also offers an app to help make the experience smoother as a whole. The app acts as a digital Starbucks card, storing credit to be used when you drive through their outlet to buy you drinks. McDonald’s on the other hand, went to another level when it comes to their app. You simply order through the app on your phone, whether in the office or at home, and then just go to the designated drivethrough to pick up your order. Through these apps, you’ll also receive special promos for free menu items and such.

The next window is usually where you’ll get your food. Depending on the order, you might be able to get your order and drive home. Sometimes, however, when you order certain items or a certain amount, the kitchen will have to take some time to process your order. You’ll have to wait just a little bit longer in

38

front of the window. These outlets have also prepared spots where you can wait as well, in case of order taking a bit longer than anticipated. When your order is ready, the attendant will send it to you directly and you can drive off happily.

Drive-throughs have become a godsend for many, but I do have some slight nitpicks and concerns regarding them. First of all, the rush hour will defeat the purpose and convenience of the drive-through experience. When it rains, it pours, as when the line gets long, you’ll have to wait longer when going through the drive-though compared to simply doing it the old fashioned way of going into the outlet to order. They have implemented somewhat of a solution, where their attendant will walk to your car to take your order. You’ll still have to wait in line to hand an order sheet to another attendant who’ll then give it to the person behind the “magic” box. Confusing? Yes. Pointless? Yes. Problem solved? Not necessarily. The point here is, it’ll be much faster to find parking and go into the outlet to order rather than wait in a long line for the drive-through.

Speaking of which, a few outlets’ have pretty bad infrastructure as well. Since most are focused towards the drive-through experience, they provide little to no parking spaces for those who want to enjoy their meals in the outlet itself. What’s worse for some outlets, because of the designed roadway that’s fit for only one car’s width, even if you prefer to find a parking space, you’ll still have to wait in line since you can’t go past the other cars. This isn’t an issue for all drive-through outlets, but it is for some.

The last of my nitpicks is the fact that there’s a higher chance you’ll get the wrong order, especially during rush hour. Yes, I get that you should always check your order before driving off, but it’ll cause some inconvenience for customers waiting behind you. I have that anxiety and I bet some you guys have it too. Plus, I put my trust into the outlets and their staff to give the correct order as well. But hey, that’s just some of the risks we’ll have to take, even if unnecessary.

As I mentioned earlier, drive-throughs have made it more convenient for us to buy our meals from the comfort of our cars. I know, we can now even order from the comfort of our homes, but going to a drive-through outlet is still an option. Rather than waiting for the delivery of your soggy fries or diluted drink, getting it fresh directly still feels awesome, doesn’t it?
