SABAH MAJU JAYA: NAVIGATING THE PATH TO PROGRESS

Sabah is a land of rich cultural heritage, stunning biodiversity, and immense economic potential. As Sabah looks toward the future, a bold vision guides its path - Sabah Maju Jaya., a comprehensive development plan that encapsulates the aspirations of every Sabahan, aiming to propel the state towards prosperity and sustainability.

What is Sabah Maju Jaya?

Sabah Maju Jaya, which translates directly to “Sabah Moving Forward,” is the slogan featured on Sabah’s State Emblem. In 2021, the slogan was reintroduced as the name for Sabah’s development plan for the years 2021 to 2025. It embodies an inclusive vision, emphasising the full ownership and accountability of every Sabahan in realising the objectives outlined in the state development plan.

Sabah Maju Jaya Roadmap (SMJ Development Plan 1.0: 20212025) serves as a guiding framework for government policies and programs, focusing on planned and strategic implementation to achieve the objectives aligned with the state’s developmental needs.

The Leaders, Vision, and Mission: Charting the Course

At the helm of SMJ is Sabah’s Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor, along with the State Cabinet and Sabah State Secretary. However, the SMJ Secretariat is led by its Chief Coordinating Officer, Datuk Haji (Datu) Rosmadi Datu Sulai, JP.

Central to SMJ are their vision and missions. “To become the leading facilitator of SMJ achievements” is an inspiring vision in leading SMJ into the future. While their missions include:

1. Systematically strengthen facilitating methods.

2. Coordinate and monitor by adapting the value of teamwork with ministries, departments, and agencies.

3. Report achievements with a focus on accountability and fairness.

4. Establish a competent, skilled, knowledgeable, and digitally literate team.

5. Utilise the digital ecosystem for monitoring and strategic communication.

The Three Cores of SMJ

Sabah Maju Jaya revolves around three core pillars, represented by the acronym “SMJ”:

S - Main Sectors of Economic Growth Focus (Sektor Utama Fokus Pertumbuhan Ekonomi)

• Agriculture: Maximising economic growth potential and uplifting rural economies.

• Industrial: Attracting investments, increasing production, and fostering balanced development.

• Tourism: Showcasing Sabah’s natural beauty and cultural diversity to drive tourism growth.

M - Human Capital and the People’s Wellbeing (Modal Insan dan Kesejahteraan Rakyat)

• Developing human capital to drive economic growth and ensure the prosperity of all Sabahans.

J - Infrastructural Network and Green Sustainability (Jaringan Infrastruktur dan Kelestarian Hijau)

• Ensuring sustainable access to basic amenities, promoting internet connectivity, and championing green initiatives for a livable future.

Implementation Strategy: Paving the Way Forward

1. Align the SMJ Roadmap with Malaysia MADANI, Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDG 2030), National Digital Network Action Plan (JENDELA), Twelfth Malaysian Plan (12MP), Malaysian Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL), Sabah New Economic Model, and the strategic plans of ministries.

2. Leverage the above initiatives and plans efficiently and effectively.

3. Generate fund flows from the private sector (domestic and international) through investments, Private Financial Initiatives (PFIs), or smart partnerships with the government or government agencies.

4. Establish the Sabah Advisory Council (SEAC), composed of industry players, academics, and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) activists whose roles are to formulate the Sabah New Economic Model and attract investment from foreign and local sources.

8

5. Accelerate the implementation of the Sabah Digital Government Strategic Plan and Sabah Maju Jaya Smart Town.

6. Optimise the outcomes of allocations provided through appropriate, targeted initiatives, delivering with integrity and accountability.

7. Optimise the effectiveness of existing agencies.

8. Implement initiatives covering both strategic thrusts and enabler initiatives of SMJ.

9. Enhance effective performance management through communication and coordination among relevant agencies integrated through the SMJ Secretariat; the monitoring, consultation and coordinating body.

SMJ’s E-Participation: A Platform for Community Engagement

The SMJ Secretariat has established an E-Participation platform, which anyone can use to provide feedback about SMJ. This platform signifies a commitment to fulfil the Chief Minister’s vision of fostering a sense of belonging among Sabahans in shaping SMJ.

The feedback will be analysed by the secretariat to collect data and refined through a series of cross-checks with existing initiatives. Subsequently, the analysed and refined input will be categorised into the list of SMJ Planned initiatives, either as suggestions for new initiatives or modifications to existing ones. These suggestions will then be distributed to the relevant ministries for their consideration and potential implementation.

This platform empowers Sabahans to contribute not only to SMJ but also to each other by submitting their feedback on the E-Participation page of the SMJ website.

Embracing the Future: Together Towards Progress

Sabah Maju Jaya represents more than just a development plan; it embodies the collective aspirations of Sabahans for a brighter future. By fostering economic growth, nurturing human capital, and championing sustainability, SMJ charts a course towards inclusive prosperity. As Sabah navigates the complexities of the modern era, collaboration, innovation, and community engagement will remain pivotal in realising the vision of Sabah Maju Jaya - a Sabah that moves forward, together.

Sabah Maju Jaya symbolises hope, progress, and resilience—a testament to the indomitable spirit of Sabahans in shaping their destiny and building a better tomorrow.

THREE YEARS OF SABAH MAJU JAYA ROADMAP

SMJ DEVELOPMENT PLAN 1.0: 2021-2025

e 29th of March 2024 signi es the third anniversary of the Sabah Maju Jaya Roadmap, which was launched in 2021 to serve the people of Sabah.

roughout this period, the state government, along with its ministries, departments, and agencies, has achieved numerous signi cant milestones.

SABAH ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE

In 2022, Sabah's GDP increased by 3.7 percent compared to 1.5 percent in the previous year, recording a GDP value of RM81.9 billion (2021: RM79.0 billion). e services sector grew by 8.6 percent (2021: 2.1%), driven by tourismoriented industries, namely wholesale & retail trade, food & beverage, accommodation, as well as utilities, transport, and ICT. However, the mining & quarrying sector contracted by 1.3 percent (2021: 3.2%), due to the declines in the crude oil and condensate subsector. e agriculture sector also dropped by 0.2 percent (2021: -2.2%), following a contraction in the crop subsector, especially in oil palm activities. Despite the decline of a few sectors, Sabah still managed to increase its GDP compared to the previous year.

STATE REVENUE COLLECTION

e Sabah State Government also showed consistent revenue collection growth over the past three years. In 2020, revenue collection was RM3.59 billion. is low revenue collection was in uenced by the closing of many sectors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Sabah Maju Jaya Roadmap, which acted as the state's economic recovery plan, successfully increased revenue collection to RM5.45 billion for that year. Revenue collection continued to increase to RM6.96 billion in 2022 and remained consistent at RM6.98 billion in 2023.

Sabah's revenue last year exceeded the 2022 records despite facing a decline in crude palm oil (CPO) and crude oil (CO) prices, exceeding it by RM11 million. e state government has also received dividends and contributions from government-linked companies that reached RM154.8 million, exceeding the target of RM120 million.

THE PERFORMANCE OF FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC INVESTMENTS

Foreign investment in ows into the state of Sabah amounted to RM4.38 billion in 2021 and increased to RM7.59 billion in 2022, remaining consistent at RM7.12 billion in 2023 as in September 2023. Domestic investment, on the other hand, showed an increase from RM0.48 billion in 2021 to RM0.79 billion in 2022 before surging to RM10.06 billion in 2023. is drastic increase is an indication of the con dence of investors to invest in various sectors in Sabah.

Among the high-impact investments that have entered the state of Sabah are SK Nexilis (M) Sdn. Bhd. with an investment value of RM4.28 billion, SBH Kibing Solar New Materials (M) Sdn. Bhd. with an investment value of RM2 billion, and Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn. Bhd. with a total investment amounting to RM19.65 billion.

e investments not only bring bene ts to the state government but also create more job opportunities for the locals. For example, SBH Kibing Solar New Materials (M) Sdn. Bhd. has collaborated with the Secretariat of Sabah Maju Jaya to hire locals from low-income families as part of an e ort to alleviate poverty in the state. Additionally, SBH Kibing and SK Nexilis also have each sent young local engineers to South Korea and China for training before starting their duties at the respective company's factories in KKIP .

SABAH TOURISM RECEIPTS

Sabah welcomed a total of 2.6 million tourists throughout the year 2023; 858,475 international arrivals and 1,754,797 domestic arrivals. is total surpasses the tourist arrivals in 2022; 1.7 million arrivals. In addition, tourism receipts amounted to RM5.52 billion in 2023. is trend has been consistent since 2021 when the tourism sector reopened a er COVID-19 pandemic, and various new tourist locations and activities were introduced.

EDUCATIONAL AIDS TO DEVELOP HUMAN CAPITAL OF SABAH

One of the government’s initiative to encourage human capital development is through various educational aids such as Bantuan Ihsan Sekolah Sabah (BISBAH), Bantuan Ihsan Tabungan Pendidikan Sabah (BISTARI), Bantuan Khas Tunai Peperiksaan (BAKTI), Anugerah Kecemerlangan Pendidikan Sabah (AKSA), Bantuan Tunai Penda aran IPT Secara One O (BUDI), Bantuan Ihsan Komputer (BAIK), Bantuan Penyelenggaraan Kecil Sekolah (BALKIS) dan Bantuan Khas Program Pendidikan (BANTU). A total of RM43 million was allocated for this purpose in 2023, while RM44 million is earmarked for 2024.

RUMAH MESRA SABAH MAJU JAYA & HOMEWARD FOR PEOPLE IN NEED

INCREASING STATE REVENUE AND PARTICIPATION IN THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

“Greater Participation, Greater Say, Greater Revenue”

A Commercial Collaboration Agreement (CCA) was signed between the State Government through SMJ Sdn Bhd and PETRONAS on 7th December of 2021 to strengthen Sabah's participation in the oil and gas industry. On 4th January 2022, Sabah Gas Master Plan was launched following the signing of the Heads of Agreement (HOA) for Natural Gas Supply.

e federal government has agreed to transfer gas regulatory authority to the Sabah State Government on 21st December 2022 as one of the demands in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

A total of 1,155 units of Rumah Mesra Sabah Maju Jaya were completed on 2023 and handed over the recipients that were selected from those listed in the e-kasih system (the National Poverty Data Bank system), individuals with dilapidated houses, persons with disabilities and victims of disasters. RM125.6 million is allocated for this project and the remaining construction of 657 units will continue this year.

Other than that, the Homeward Program is among several initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of the people of Sabah. It is a high-impact program that o ers loans of essential medical equipment to marginalized individuals, the elderly, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) from the B40 group.

roughout the years 2021 to 2023, a total of 914 individuals have bene ted from this program; 305 of them received the equipment last year.

In 2023, Sabah State Legislative Assembly (Dewan Undangan Negeri or DUN) has approved two enactments, namely the Gas Supply Enactment 2023 and the Sabah Energy Commission Enactment 2023, granting the authority to regulate natural gas to the state government of Sabah. is allowed Sabah to take over 25% equity interest in PETRONAS Chemicals Fertiliser Sabah Sdn. Bhd. and 50% equity interest in Samarang.

Sabah has sold its rst cargo of crude oil from its 50% interest in the Samarang Production Sharing Contract (PSC), marked by the issuance of an o cial invoice to Shell International Eastern Trading Company (SIETCO) in June 2023.

As the Sabah Skills & Technology Centre (SSTC) is celebrating its 25th anniversary soon, we reflect on a quarter-century of unwavering dedication to shaping the future of Sabah’s workforce. From its humble beginnings to its current stature as a beacon of innovation and opportunity, SSTC’s journey has been guided by the visionary leadership of its former chairmen, including the pioneering efforts of Datuk Dr. Kok Tiong Chee and the enduring legacy of Datuk Seri Panglima Wong Khen Thau. Today, as SSTC embarks on its next chapter, we welcome the leadership of the esteemed Datuk John Choo, whose passion for education and industry expertise will undoubtedly propel SSTC to new heights of success and impact. Join us as we celebrate the past, present, and future of SSTC, a testament to the power of education, collaboration, and community empowerment.

Datuk Dr. Kok Tiong Chee (SSTC Chairman 2000-2009)

Armed with a background in Electrical Engineering, Keningau-born Datuk Dr. Kok Tiong Chee embarked on a transformative academic journey to the United Kingdom, where he pursued and successfully completed his PhD in 1983. Upon returning to Sabah, he wasted no time in putting his expertise to work, initially joining the ranks of Sabah Energy Corporation and later Sabah Gas Industries Sdn Bhd. However, his ambitions stretched far beyond the confines of conventional employment.

In 1992, Datuk Dr. Kok Tiong Chee seized the opportunity to chart his own path, founding Unimekar Sdn Bhd, an endeavor he continues to lead and one which has evolved into a group of companies with major involvement in electrical infra project of up to 500kV and owns companies that manufacture galvanized steel pole, concrete pole, galvanized steel lattice tower and steel billet. But it was his pivotal role in SSTC that truly solidified his legacy as a pioneer in workforce development.

Appointed as SSTC’s inaugural chairman in 2000, Datuk Dr. Kok Tiong Chee embarked on a nine-year tenure marked by unwavering dedication to his mission: to bolster Sabah’s manufacturing industry by nurturing a pool of skilled workers. Under his stewardship,

SSTC underwent a remarkable transformation, evolving into a beacon of hope for aspiring professionals across the region. His vision was clear: to establish an institution that would serve as a breeding ground for the next generation of skilled talent. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, including securing funding and acquiring suitable facilities, Datuk Dr. Kok Tiong Chee’s resolve never wavered. Through collaborative efforts with SEDCO, along with the State and Federal Government, he successfully navigated these hurdles, propelling SSTC toward greater heights of success.

Reflecting on his tenure, Datuk Dr. Kok Tiong Chee fondly recalls the moments spent in council meetings, where he had the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and witness the tangible impact of SSTC’s endeavours.

Looking ahead, he envisions SSTC continuing to prioritise skill development, laying the foundation for a brighter future for Sabah’s workforce. As the architect of change, Datuk Dr. Kok Tiong Chee’s legacy serves as an inspiration to all those who dare to dream of a better tomorrow.

Datuk Seri Panglima

Wong Khen Thau (SSTC Chairman 2009-2021)

In 1973, at the tender age of 23, DSP Wong Khen Thau made history by becoming the youngest principal in Sabah, assuming leadership of what is now known as SMK Mat Salleh. During his tenure, he achieved unprecedented success with the school topping Sabah’s passing percentage within just three years. His dedication earned him the prestigious title of Teacher of the Year in 1976, a testament to his unwavering commitment to education.

Continuing his quest for knowledge, DSP Wong Khen Thau pursued a Master’s degree at the University of Bristol under British Council scholarship, further honing his skills and expertise in the field of education. Following his academic pursuits, he transitioned into the corporate world, holding key position as a General Manager and eventually venturing into manufacturing and founding ATI College.

In 2009, DSP Wong Khen Thau assumed the role of chairman at SSTC, embarking on a transformative 12-year tenure, the longest in SSTC’s history. His vision was clear: to elevate SSTC to new heights of excellence and ensure its financial sustainability. Under his leadership, SSTC flourished, expanding its course offerings and forging strategic partnerships with entities like ATI College to delve into the tourism industry.

Despite facing challenges, DSP Wong Khen Thau remained undeterred, leveraging his passion and determination to overcome obstacles and propel SSTC toward success. His dedication bore fruit, with SSTC gaining recognition and financial stability by the time of his departure.

Reflecting on his time as chairman, DSP Wong Khen Thau cherishes every moment spent with SSTC, viewing it as a home where his dedication and devotion to education found a true purpose. As he passed the baton to the next chairman, he remains hopeful for SSTC’s future, advocating for greater recognition of its pivotal role in developing skilled workers and shaping the region’s workforce.

Datuk John Choo is emerging as a dynamic force in the realm of industry and education, dedicated to shaping the future of Sabah’s workforce. With a rich background in food processing and a fervent commitment to community development, Datuk John Choo’s journey is one marked by innovation, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

As the CEO of Ken Chong Food Industries, Datuk John Choo brings a wealth of industry knowledge and expertise to the table, leveraging his experience to drive growth and innovation within his field. However, his impact extends far beyond the confines of the corporate world, as evidenced by his recent appointment as Chairman of SSTC.

Assuming the mantle of leadership in 2021, Datuk John Choo wasted no time in setting his sights on a bold mission: to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of Sabah’s burgeoning manufacturing industry. Drawing upon his industry acumen and passion for education, he sought to harness the resources of SSTC to empower individuals with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in today’s competitive market.

Reflecting on his time with SSTC, Datuk John Choo fondly recalls a memorable moment aboard a yacht, where he and fellow council members convened for a cocktail dinner. Although the event was marred by the misfortune of losing his phone to a pickpocket during a subsequent trip to China, Datuk John Choo maintains a lighthearted perspective, finding humour even in adversity.

In terms of industry knowledge, Datuk John Choo emphasises the importance of equipping workers with practical skills relevant to their field. In the realm of food processing, for example, proficiency in operating heavy machinery is essential. He commends SSTC for offering Industry 4.0 courses such as Virtual Reality Fundamental, Augmented Reality, Internet of Things, and BOSCH-Rexroth IR4.0 - Awareness.

For Datuk John Choo, the highlight of his role as Chairman lies in the camaraderie and collaboration fostered during council meetings. Looking ahead, he envisions a bright horizon for SSTC, where the next generation of youth are empowered with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving job market.

ADSONE MATTHEW MITTY GABU: THE MAN BEHIND MUSIC

Sometimes music isn’t all about the catchy beats and relatable lyrics. Adsone Matthew Mitty Gabu is a music lecturer, artistic director, choral conductor, and music researcher. He has been working at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) since 2013 as a music lecturer specializing in music education and choral conducting. His courses include music theory, aural training, keyboard instruction, conducting, voice ensemble, piano and vocal. He utilizes various teaching methods to surround students with an understanding and passion for music.

Adsone Matthew enrolled at UiTM, Faculty of Education, for his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with Honors and also obtained his Master’s in Music Education from the Faculty of Music. Throughout his journey as a student, he dedicated himself in various activities in order to understand the art of music even better, such as having regular practice sessions, participated in various musical ensembles to develop his collaborative and performance skills, and also learned the effective teaching methods that include understanding pedagogy and curriculum development. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Music at UMS, Academy of Arts and Creative Technology.

Among the challenges in his academic journey was finding the delicate balance between technical proficiency and emotional expression. It’s not just about playing the notes correctly; it’s about infusing each piece with personal meaning and interpretation.

It’s a demanding endeavour that requires patience, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of perfection. Adsone believes that studying music as an art form involves a blend of theory, practice, and creativity that requires a deep exploration of the musical elements, history, and various genres.

Adsone wouldn’t have become a conductor if it weren’t for the support of his family, professors, mentors, and friends. As a conductor, he notes that teamwork and communication is important. In July 2023, he was involved in the World Choir Games that took place in Gangneung, Korea. The World Choir Games is the world’s largest choir competition that takes place every two years on different continents.

During the competition, he notes that the choices of songs for the performances matter because the correct choice of song that caters to their strengths evokes a positive reaction. Adsone and The Male-Efficient won 2 gold medals in the folklore a capella and male choir category. On 8th October 2023, he and the In Unity Chorale, a mixed choir ensemble participated in The Jesselton Choir Fest 2023 and emerged as the open category winner and the festival champion.

Adsone is also a vocal coach for a number of talented singers from Sabah, such as Marsha Milan, Eylia Guntabid, Qahirah Maisarah, and more. He notes that a vocal coach should be strong communicators and exceptionally perceptive listeners, capable of picking up on a student’s unconscious singing habits, and technical weaknesses.

As a music enthusiast himself, Adsone doesn’t limit his preferences and appreciates all music genres. If he were to choose a few favourite artists, it would be Pavarotti, Freddie Mercury, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Stevie Wonder, Tan Sri P. Ramlee, Dato’ Sudirman Haji Arshad, Gundohing Evaristus Gungkit, Datuk Francis Landong, and the list goes on.

Adsone shares that hard work, determination, patience, and planning, none of which are particularly easy. The road to becoming a professional music artist is also the same. But this pays off when making great music with others, whether untrained amateurs or seasoned professionals. He leaves a small message for aspiring musicians out there looking to turn their interest in making music into a profession. Your love for music needs to be enough for you to make it a profession. Work extra hard, respect each other, respect the music, be kind, be encouraging, and don’t waste time. Turning a hobby into a career is possible.

TECH

FRAMEWORK IS CHANGING THINGS UP... LITERALLY

You know what bugs me as a laptop owner? The fact that I need to change my whole laptop if just one component or part is faulty is very annoying to say the least. Not to mention, I will need to cough up some dough to do so as well. But what if I tell you there’s a company out there making laptops with modular (easily replaceable) components? Let’s take a look at Framework’s Laptop 16.

Before you take up your pitchforks, I know some laptop parts can be replaced or upgraded. Parts such as the RAM and SSD/ HDD can be replaced, if you know what you’re doing. You could also replace the screen, speakers, or batteries if you’re an expert. You know what can’t be replaced? The laptop’s graphics card, the ports, and the layout of your keyboard. And for the parts you can replace, how accessible is it to do so?

Framework has made the whole process much easier. They produce the modular parts and the laptops that can take advantage of said parts. Their latest offering is the Laptop 16, a sleek 16 inch laptop that utilises AMD’s Ryzen 7040 Series processors with the Radeon 780M integrated graphics. The integrated graphics are fine for lighter loads, but if you need something more powerful, a Graphics Module by Framework which houses a discrete graphics card (AMD Radeon RX 7700S) is available for you to swap and upgrade yourself.

And that’s the beauty of Framework’s laptops. All their modules are hot-swappable, which means they act like plug and play components and you don’t need to configure any settings to make them work. They’ve also made it so that these modules are easily accessible, so there aren’t a lot of, if any, hidden screws you should be aware of.

So what modules does Framework provide? Well, I already mentioned the discrete graphics card module. The keyboard along with the touchpad can be moved around or replaced with RGB options. You could even add a number pad as well. If you’re not a number pad kinda person, you can use custom spacers or an LED Matrix that track battery life, show notifications, and a whole lot more cool functions. Framework also allows you to swap the ports, giving you USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, and Ethernet ports for you to swap in and out depending on your needs.

Framework’s efforts aren’t only cool, but also great for consumers and the environment as well. Consumers won’t need to replace a whole machine when only one component isn’t working, resulting in less e-waste overall. I just hope more companies will start doing the same and not only focus on the money.

DESTINATION

SABAH’S SCENIC IN-FLIGHT VIEWS

Sabah, often referred to as the land below the wind, has breathtaking landscapes which are easily recognised from the planes soaring through the skies.

The side of the plane you select, whether right or left, determines your in-flight views. Below are the routes starting from Kota Kinabalu City (KK), so consider this guide when choosing your window seat.

The left-side view of the KK to Sandakan flight provides the closest vantage point to Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia’s highest mountain, and the town of Kundasang at its foothill during domestic flights.

As your plane approaches Sandakan city, the left side also affords a superior view of the Kinabatangan floodplains, recognized as the largest RAMSAR site in Malaysia—a wetland celebrated for its ecological and biodiversity significance.

Passengers seated on the left side will still catch a glimpse of Mount Kinabalu. Additionally, as the plane passes by Tawau Hills Park, fortunate passengers on the left side may witness the ancient volcanic mouth of Mount Maria amidst the dense Borneo rainforest.

For those frequent local travelers, consider switching to the right side during the KK to Tawau flight. From this perspective, you might be lucky enough to be treated to a view of Maliau Basin, also known as Sabah’s Lost World. This geological wonder resembles a vast meteorite crater when viewed from the sky.

Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu

The view from the flight from KK to Lahad Datu is not bad at all. On clear days, passengers on the left side are treated to the majestic sight of Mount Kinabalu in the background, with the picturesque paddy fields of Tambunan, often referred to as the Switzerland of the East, in the foreground.

If you’re seated on the right side, you’ll have the privilege of gazing at the multi-peaked Mount Trus Madi, the secondhighest mountain in Malaysia. Additionally, the right side offers a bird’s-eye view of Danum Valley, one of the oldest rainforests in the world.

To Kota Kinabalu City

Planes destined to land at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) treat passengers to a scenic journey along the coastline of KK City. During this approach, travelers are afforded views of popular landmarks, including the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), KK Waterfront, Sabah State Mosque, Sutera Harbour, and Tanjung Aru Beach.

For flights departing from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) bound for destinations outside of Sabah, and you happen to be seated on the left side, you’ll have a higher chance of spotting the “Smiley Islands” formed by the arrangement of Manukan, Sulug, and Mamutik Islands.

General Tips:

Pay a little fee for a window seat located near the front or rear of the aircraft to minimize wing obstructions. The multi-layered windowpane will impact the quality of your photos, Using a professional camera to shoot in RAW format will help you a lot in the post-processing.

PERSONALITY

Humorous, inspirational, and down-to-earth. These are the perfect descriptions for Datuk (Datu) Rosmadi Datu Sulai, the Chief Coordinating Officer of the Sabah Maju Jaya Secretariat. A man with a goal to develop Sabah one step at a time, his beliefs on how to do so might just surprise some of you. So read on to find out more about Datuk Rosmadi and his vision for Sabah Maju Jaya.

DATUK (DATU) ROSMADI DATU SULAI: MOVING FORWARD, THE CORRECT WAY

Born on the 4th of August 1962, into a fishing family in Kota Belud, Datuk Rosmadi cherished his upbringing. Even though today, his family’s income would be considered in the hardcore poverty, back then they didn’t give a hoot about their situation. He reminisced about his father’s efforts of going out to fish almost everyday to put food on the table, and how they would only eat tapioca if the weather wasn’t ideal for fishing. However, Datuk Rosmadi cherished the times spent with his family and living their lives the best they can with what they have.

Datuk Rosmadi had a humble early education. Studying in SRK Peladok he joked that he would usually ride a Ferrari and Merc during warmer and monsoon seasons respectively. If you’re curious, this meant that he would ride his horse and buffalo to school depending on the weather. Moving up to secondary school SMK Kota Belud, his father decided that the young Rosmadi would opt for the English medium of learning instead of Malay. Although he didn’t have any English basics, his father’s decision would shape his destiny for the better.

He then moved to SMK Likas to continue his form 4 and 5 education. There, Datuk Rosmadi did his MCE (Malaysian Certificate of Education), where he jokingly said he was the “best among the worst”, the only one scoring second grade in the school. He was accepted into Sabah College, where even though all his classmates scored higher than him for their MCEs, Datuk Rosmadi was determined to succeed.

Said determination and hard work paid off as Datuk Rosmadi got a full certificate for his HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate). Although he was still wondering on how he was able to do so, he does believe it was divine intervention by God. Datuk Rosmadi accepted a job offer after his exams and started working as a clerk at the Chief Minister’s Department at the tender age of 17.

Seeing all his friends continuing their studies overseas, Datuk Rosmadi wanted to take the challenge as well. With a government scholarship, he started his first degree in sociology at Southern Illinois University. He then pursued his MPA (Master of Public Administration) at California State University before moving back to Sabah.

The rest is what you call history. He was posted to a few government ministries and departments such as the Department of Social Welfare, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Communication, Sabah Cultural Board, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and Sabah State Civil Service Department. Now, he leads the Sabah Maju Jaya Secretariat as the Chief Coordinating Officer.

Sabah Maju Jaya is the current development plan for making Sabah better. It’s responsible for coordinating and connecting the needs of the people to the relevant ministries, departments, and agencies; both state and federal as well as the GLCs. To be exact,

Sabah Maju Jaya will look for the correct initiatives provided by government bodies to stream to those who are entitled to it. For Datuk Rosmadi, however, it is important to prioritise those who really need assistance rather than those who want the assistance, especially with the limited funds and initiatives. For example, there are thousands of households who are in need of help, but only a select few that are desperately in need of it. That’s where Datuk Rosmadi’s focus is pinpointed.

“The right way isn’t necessarily correct, but the correct way should always be right,” is a belief that Datuk Rosmadi holds close to heart with Sabah Maju Jaya. In the quest to help those in need, simply handing over handouts might be the right way, but it isn’t the correct solution. Not only is it not sustainable in the long term, it also doesn’t develop anything or anyone. Again, why not prioritise the funds for those really in need while helping developing people or households with the tools and skills to better themselves and move up the economic bracket.

Datuk Rosmadi also doesn’t shy from criticism either. He is well aware of the jokes and memes that poke fun of Sabah Maju Jaya on social media. He understands he can’t force the people to believe Sabah Maju Jaya. However, he wants everyone to understand that we all need to work together to find the correct approach instead of simply settling for the right ones. After all, Sabah Maju Jaya doesn’t belong to the government or the government authorities, it belongs to the people. That’s why Datuk Rosmadi welcomes all forms of feedback from Sabahans everywhere and encourages everyone to properly submit them through their website and even social media platforms.

The ability to think without the box as Datuk Rosmadi puts it, is what makes him stand out above the rest of the crowd. His wealth of experience and knowledge is the reason why Datuk Rosmadi was entrusted to lead the Sabah Maju Jaya secretariat. And that is Datuk (Datu) Rosmadi Datu Sulai. Humorous, inspirational, and down-to-Earth.

Fun fact:

Datuk Rosmadi loves to spend his free time golfing and bowling, where his favourite athletes are Fred Couples and Jason Belmonte from the respective sports. He also loves Jazz music, often listening to it in the background during his reading time.

NAVIGATING THE ECO-FRIENDLY LANDSCAPE: BENEFITS, CHALLENGES, AND SOLUTIONS

In an era marked by growing environmental awareness, the demand for eco-friendly products continues to rise. These products promise a plethora of benefits, from reducing carbon footprints to promoting healthier living spaces. However, navigating the eco-friendly landscape comes with its fair share of challenges and considerations.

One of the key advantages of eco-friendly products lies in their contribution to environmental conservation. By opting for sustainably sourced materials and energy-efficient manufacturing processes, consumers can play a vital role in mitigating climate change and preserving natural ecosystems. Additionally, eco-friendly products often boast lower carbon footprints, promoting a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Furthermore, choosing eco-friendly products can lead to healthier living spaces. Many of these products are free from harmful chemicals and toxins commonly found in conventional alternatives. By reducing exposure to allergens and pollutants, individuals can improve their overall well-being and quality of life.

Despite these benefits, using eco-friendly products may present certain challenges. Some consumers find that eco-friendly alternatives are more cumbersome to use compared to their

conventional counterparts. This can be attributed to factors such as performance differences, maintenance requirements, and higher upfront costs.

For instance, while eco-friendly cleaning products may offer environmental benefits, they may not always deliver the same level of cleaning power as traditional chemicals. Similarly, compostable packaging materials may require special disposal methods, adding an extra layer of complexity for users.

Additionally, the transition to eco-friendly products may involve a learning curve for some individuals. Switching to reusable alternatives, such as cloth diapers or menstrual cups, may require users to adopt new techniques or practices.

Despite these challenges, there are solutions to make eco-friendly products more accessible and user-friendly. Companies can invest in research and development to improve the performance and usability of eco-friendly alternatives. Additionally, governments and regulatory bodies can implement policies to incentivize the use of sustainable materials and practices.

Consumers also play a crucial role in driving demand for eco-friendly products and advocating for transparency in the marketplace. By educating themselves about environmental issues and making informed purchasing decisions, individuals can contribute to a more sustainable future.

So while using eco-friendly products may present certain challenges, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. By embracing eco-friendly alternatives, consumers can make a positive impact on the environment, promote healthier lifestyles, and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

FITNESS

When it comes to leadership, I believe there is such a thing as a crossover between regular exercise and taking charge outside of the gym.

No doubt, a leader should be taking care of others. But how can a leader be truly a leader if he/she doesn’t even take care of themselves?

Having a regular regime that includes some form of exercise is usually a good sign to begin with. From there it’s all about the layers;

1. Exercise teaches the values of physical & mental resilience

When you are a parent, having to juggle housework, your job AND still show up to lift some weights; it encompasses the fervent nature of committing to something that we may not be up for. It teaches us to do things that might not be so enjoyable at the moment but instead, far off in the future!

When you do take charge; be it in the workforce, home and/or even in class, it shows because you are RESILIENT.

2. Exercise celebrates failures!

Do you know what’s the main driver to muscle gain? Adequate mechanical tension and sometimes mechanical failure; which basically means you will have to do the exercises close to a point where you can’t even lift the weights anymore! Sometimes you’ll even feel like you are made out of jelly!

Someone who commits to the gym, wouldn’t simply crumble when push comes to shove and failure comes knocking at the door. Instead, a leader understands and celebrates failures! It is a significant part of building muscle as well as when YOU need to take charge outside of the gym.

3. Exercise keeps you grounded

Building muscle is truly, very humbling. The very foundation to building muscle is you’ll need to keep making it hard once you’ve adapted to the previous intensity and stimulus. The moment you feel like it’s easy, it’s probably a good sign to add up the weights! A very good lesson to learn; to keep our heads down and not let power get the best of us. That’s what makes a leader.

If you call yourself a leader, ponder on the investments you’ve done on your body and well-being. Do you workout regularly? Do you have mostly nutrient-dense meals? Are you intentional with your movements as well as your food? Cause all of these, can make a great leader.

Being physically and mentally resilient, who’s also grounded and understands failure is apart of being a leader will work wonders in society.

So lift some weights, cause that person should be you. Cheers.

Dental anxiety is a common issue that can prevent individuals from seeking essential dental care. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or child, helping them overcome their fears and visit the dentist is crucial for their oral health and overall well-being. In this guide, we’ll explore effective strategies to encourage loved ones to overcome dental anxiety and prioritise their dental health.

Understanding Dental Anxiety:

Dental anxiety can stem from various factors, including fear of pain, past traumatic experiences, or general anxiety about medical procedures. It’s essential to acknowledge and address these concerns with empathy and understanding.

Empowering Through Education:

One of the most effective ways to encourage loved ones to visit the dentist is by educating them about the importance of dental care. Emphasise the role of regular check-ups in preventing serious dental issues and maintaining optimal oral hygiene.

THE DENTIST

Leading by Example:

Lead by example by demonstrating your commitment to dental health through regular dental visits. Share your positive experiences with your loved ones to help alleviate their fears and normalise the idea of visiting the dentist.

Finding a Supportive Dentist:

Choosing a dentist who specialises in treating patients with dental anxiety can make a significant difference in easing fears. Look for a dentist who is known for their gentle approach and compassionate demeanour.

Addressing Concerns:

Listen to your loved one’s concerns about visiting the dentist without judgement. Addressing their worries and providing reassurance can help them feel more comfortable and empowered to take control of their dental health.

Making it a Positive Experience:

Encourage your loved one to bring along comforting items, such as a favourite stuffed animal or music, to help them relax during the appointment. Praise them for their bravery afterward and acknowledge their efforts to overcome their fears.

Offering Incentives:

Consider offering incentives or rewards for visiting the dentist, such as a treat or an activity they enjoy. Positive reinforcement can motivate your loved one to take the necessary steps toward better oral health.

Seeking Professional Help:

If your loved one’s fear of the dentist is severe, consider seeking help from a therapist or counsellor who specialises in treating phobias. Professional guidance can provide valuable support in overcoming dental anxiety.

By approaching the issue of dental anxiety with empathy, understanding, and support, you can help your loved ones overcome their fears and prioritize their dental health. Together, we can empower each other to take the necessary steps toward a brighter, healthier smile.

RANTS & RAVES

ARE YOU A GOOD LEADER?

Alright, gather around because it’s time to talk about the qualities that absolutely do not make a good leader. We’ve all had the misfortune of working with someone who embodies these traits, and let me tell you, it’s like navigating a ship with a captain who can’t read a compass.

First on the list is the “I-know-it-all” syndrome. You know the type—the leader who thinks they have all the answers and dismisses input from the team. Newsflash! Nobody knows everything, and a good leader values the collective intelligence of the team. It’s not a one-person show, and thinking otherwise is asking for problems..

Next up, we have the “Blame Game Champion.” This leader excels at pointing fingers when things go wrong but conveniently disappears or forgets when it’s time to take responsibility. A good leader owns up to their mistakes, learns from them, and collaboratively finds solutions. Throwing others under the bus? Not exactly the mark of leadership greatness. Your team will always remember this about you.

Now, let’s talk about the “Dictator in Disguise.” This leader rules with an iron fist, squashing any dissenting opinions and bulldozing over everyone in their path. Newsflash again: leadership isn’t about being a dictator; it’s about building a team. If you can’t handle differing perspectives and collaborate, you’re not leading—you’re dictating, and that’s a recipe for a toxic workplace.

There’s also the “Inconsistent Rule Maker.” This leader applies rules and consequences as he chooses, leaving the team in a constant daze. A good leader establishes clear expectations and applies policies consistently. Confusing others? That’s not leadership; it’s a recipe for a disheartened and demotivated team.

Oh, and how about the leader who’s allergic to feedback? A good leader welcomes constructive criticism, as it helps one to grow and improve. The leader who swoops in to claim credit for the team’s successes but conveniently forgets to mention their involvement in failures is a thief . A true leader shares credit generously, acknowledging the hard work of the team. Taking credit for everything? It’s not leadership; it’s just an ego trip.

So, if you’re displaying any of these qualities, it’s time for some serious self-reflection. Leadership isn’t about power trips, ego boosts, or finger-pointing; it’s about fostering a collaborative, supportive, and productive environment. So, let’s leave these toxic traits behind and strive for leadership that actually inspires and guides a team towards success.

POP CULTURE

Oyen: The King of Entertainment

If you’ve been on the internet long enough, then you must be familiar with the many entertaining mischiefs of cats and their cute misdeeds. They’ve practically been all around the net since the beginning. Don’t you find it cute that whenever a cat goes viral, it’s almost always the ginger cat, sometimes with a mix of white? We all refer to these cats as “Oyen,” a cute and different way to say “orange.” We are bound to find at least one or two cases of Oyen and their naughtiness on any social media at all.

One of the most recent cases of this that caught the attention of many cat lovers is when Oyen tried to chase a cockroach and got himself stuck in a hole in the wall. The owner had to call the Kota Kinabalu Civil Defense Force to rescue the cat from the wall. Thanks to their effort, the cat was rescued and came out

unharmed. What a lot of people find entertaining is the fact that this is the second time it happened to the exact same cat at the exact same hole. This story sounds like it came out of a cartoon scenario.

Another orange cat that recently went viral is Mr. Fresh. He is the orange cat that watches you with his side eyes, as if he’s judging you. Ever since his debut on the internet, everyone has been using him as a reaction image or sticker. But did you know that Mr. Fresh is actually a stray cat? He appeared in a social media livestream of “Hello Street Cat,” a brand originating from China made for everyone to be able to care more for stray cats through the power of technology. He got his name Mr. Fresh due to his preferences for freshly dispensed foods.

If you want to go way back in time, let’s talk about possibly the first Oyen to dominate the internet, Fatso the Keyboard Cat. If you’re unfamiliar with this ancient meme, it shows a video of an orange tabby cat playing a keyboard while wearing a blue shirt. While the original video was uploaded on YouTube in 2007, it was recorded in the mid-80s. Who wouldn’t be entertained with a video of Oyen playing a musical instrument?

Even in the world of animation, there are many mischievous Oyen looking to cause trouble. One of the most well-known is, of course, Garfield, the orange tabby Persian cat. He hates Monday, he’s lazy, he always likes to cause trouble for his owner, and most of all, he likes lasagna. Another one is a bit more adventurous and daring than the last one—almost a polar opposite but never an idle cat. Puss in Boots, or simply referred to as Puss, is an orange tabby cat from the Shrek franchise. He is so loved by the audience, he even got his own two movies! Another classic addition to the Oyen team would be Toulouse from The Aristocats. Being the eldest out of all the three kittens, he is also the most playful. He always tried to appear tough because he wanted to meet the tough alley cats.

What is it about Oyen cats that attracts us to them? Generally speaking, we can’t deny the fact that cats are arguably the cutest and most playful pet to own, just next to a pet dog. The playfulness of cats is entertaining to watch and harmless, at least most of the time. You just can’t help but be infatuated with their mischief. But why is it always the orange cats? There’s a thing called “the orange cat behaviour,” where orange cats tend to have a more chaotic and interesting behaviour compared to other cats. While there’s no scientific basis for this, it doesn’t feel far from the truth from what we have witnessed of Oyen, the king of entertainment.

BEAUTY

A Modern Men’s Beauty Regime

A modern men’s beauty regime encompasses a variety of grooming practices aimed at enhancing one’s appearance and promoting overall well-being. This routine typically involves skincare, hair care, and other grooming rituals.

Cleansing: A crucial step in any men’s beauty regime is cleansing. Using a gentle face wash helps remove dirt and oil, keeping the skin fresh.

Exfoliation: Exfoliating the skin 2-3 times a week removes dead cells, promoting a smoother complexion and preventing ingrown hairs.

Moisturizing: Hydration is key. Applying a moisturizer suitable for one’s skin type helps maintain skin health and prevent dryness.

Sunscreen: Protecting the skin from UV rays is essential. A daily application of sunscreen safeguards against premature aging and reduces the risk of skin cancers.

Eye Care: Eye creams or gels can address concerns like dark circles and puffiness, providing a refreshed look.

Hair Care: A well-rounded beauty routine includes hair care. Using quality shampoos and conditioners tailored to hair type keeps locks healthy and manageable.

Facial Hair Maintenance: For those with facial hair, regular trimming, shaping, and grooming are essential for a polished appearance.

Body Grooming: Keeping body hair in check with shaving or grooming tools is part of maintaining an overall neat and tidy look.

Hydration and Diet: Drinking water and maintaining a balanced diet contribute significantly to healthy skin and overall well-being.

Regular Health Checkups: Beyond external care, periodic health checkups ensure any underlying health issues are addressed promptly, reflecting positively on one’s appearance.

A well-maintained beauty regime tailored to individual needs will enhances confidence and contributes to a positive self-image for men.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

It’s not often you hear hip hop and good food in a sentence. Well, get ready to hear it much more often, because G Hip Hop & Grillz by 6ixty9ine (G for short) is here to serve good food and entertain you with good vibes all around.

G recently opened its doors to everyone looking for a new hangout that offers good food and great vibes. It’s located at the corner lot of Plaza 333’s block 1 (the same block as Phi Dental). The chill ambience offers a great place to hangout and catch up with good company. You’ll immediately notice the stocked bar and furniture accented in the signature 6ixty9ine red and black. Before going upstairs for more space to hangout, you’ll notice a few couches arranged around a TV that’s hooked up to a retro gaming console. You’ll also see a DJ deck where a DJ will spin some tunes later in the night. Lastly, there is lots of hip hop memorabilia all around G. The same goes for the names of their dishes, being inspired by hip hip references, so keep your eyes peeled for all the hidden “easter eggs” as they call them.

There’s only so much I could mention in this article about the ambience and environment, because seeing it for yourself is much better than reading about it. Now let’s get the food review started with their Soft Rolls which are served with every meal you get. As per the name, they are super soft and are worth every bite, especially when they’re fresh out the oven. Another appetiser to get is their Mushroom Soup served with Garlic Bread. Dubbed “The Best Mushroom Soup in Town” by our host, I can’t deny they might have a point here. Its creaminess and savouriness ticks a lot of boxes for what makes for a good mushroom soup.

The first of the mains is Da Original Gangsta Burger. Sporting lamb and beef patty, beef bacon, sunny side up egg, melted cheese, lettuce, and a special sauce, your mouth will water with the initial sight of it. I can’t lie though, it tasted as good as how it looks. Every bite was simply immaculate. The patties were soft and juicy, without the strong lamb flavour you might expect. Pair it with a slight tang of the sauce and a bit of saltiness from the cheese, and you get perfection. I can safely say this is my personal favourite burger as of yet.

Next up we have the Sausage Platter. It’s a platter of 3 sausages, chicken, beef, and lamb, all wrapped in sheep intestine skin. With that knowledge, you can expect homemade goodness. And good they are, each with their distinct flavours. Plus, the side of creamy mashed potatoes goes super well with the sausages as a whole.

Speaking of the sausages, we find the beef sausage in the next dish, the Grillz Remix. Called so because it features the same 3 types of meats, but this time you get a piece of chicken chop, lamb chop, and the aforementioned sausage. Although it seems like the same dish because of the meats, the different way they’re prepared offers new flavours and experiences. The spinach that tops the dish adds another dimension to the dish, a slightly bitter flavour that grounds the flavours of the meats, in a good way of course.

Dat Pinky Prawn Fettuccine is a dish to look out for if you’re a fan of Italian food. The tangy tomato sauce pairs well with the fettuccine pasta that’s cooked al dente. Along with the fresh prawns, you bet you’ll be satisfied and full after eating this dish. A plus for cheese lovers is the amount of it sprinkled all over the dish, almost overpowering the rest of the flavours.

Last but not least of the mains is the Beef Short Ribs, a must for meat lovers. The thick slices of soft juicy beef felt like heaven in the mouth. The spinach that top the dish, along with the mushroom sauce adds the perfect amount of earthiness to an otherwise sweet flavour for the beef. The beef slices also pair well with the creamy mashed potatoes that balances all the flavours and textures together.

Dessert wise, we tried out two sizzling “hot” desserts. The first being the Chris Brownies, a brownie with ice cream on top, offering a well balanced chocolate flavour that isn’t too sweet. The fudgy texture is also an added bonus for dessert lovers. The other dessert we tried is the Sweet Ma Puddy, a very filling bread pudding that isn’t too sweet and isn’t too bland either, just right. So why did I mention sizzling? Well, both dishes are served on a hot plate and will have been served with a generous pouring of chocolate and custard sauce respectively. This creates a stunning and exciting sizzle for both dishes.

So, if you’re up for good food and good vibes with good company, we definitely recommend everyone to check out G By 6ixty9ine.
