FEATURE CALLING SABAH HOME

We are a multi-racial and multi-ethnic community that co-exists in peace and harmony. You don’t need to go far to witness this in motion, just look at Sabah. We boast the most ethnicities living together in the whole of Malaysia. It isn’t just the numbers; we’re all able to live together harmoniously. We’ve also been blessed with the ecological richness of nature that exists in our state. These are attributes that attract people to live in Sabah. This month, we’ll be featuring fellow Malaysians from across the sea to tell their stories, happily calling Sabah their home.

Tai Yong Seng

Hailing from Penang, Tai Yong Seng has been living in Sabah for more than 6 years now. He came here after receiving an offer to study at University Malaysia Sabah, even though it was his third choice. He felt like it was his destiny to live here, because since setting foot in Sabah, he then got to experience first-hand the unity and harmony of Sabahans. Today, Tai Yong Seng sells Point of Sales systems to local entrepreneurs, helping them to build and optimize their business operations. He loves spending his spare time exploring the picturesque beaches of Sabah with his girlfriend. Their favourite spots are Tanjung Aru beach and Nexus Karambunai. Tai Yong Seng has always loved his time here. He’s been planning to invite his parents to stay here as well.

Chin Ee Kai

Having spent 4 years in Sabah and working as a control engineer for Shell, Chin Ee Kai really adores food, especially anything local. This Penangite co-founded Laundroluxe after just a year of living here. Ee Kai relocated to Kota Kinabalu for work, and immediately fell hard in love with everything that Sabah has to offer. Meeting the most delightful people of Sabah and experiencing the incredible pinkish sunset are definitely moments he will never forget. As co-founder of Laundroluxe, Ee Kai spends his free time searching and feasting on Sabah’s luscious delicacies. If he ever leaves Sabah, he will definitely miss the idyllic islands, the scrumptious seafood, and mostly the bond and friendships he has fostered over the years.

Violet Velu

Six years ago, Violet Velu came to Sabah to study for her Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences at University Malaysia Sabah. She was born in Kedah but grew to love Sabah and the people here. For her, living in Sabah has been an amazing experience and she learnt to be independent since she lives alone and far away from family. In her spare time, Violet enjoys practicing muay thai. Her best moment so far is participating in her first muay thai match. The prep for the fight has really pushed and trained her mentally and physically. It was a great way to fight back the negative forces that the MCO has brought. She definitely loves the locals here and will miss the amazing friends she’s met along the way. In her own words, “they’re the closest things to family I have here.” Violet truly appreciates everyone she has met and the experiences she had over the years, and she encourages more people to experience The Land Below The Wind.

Cheah Lee Sun

Cheah Lee Sun is another Penangite who has proudly called Sabah her home. As Sabah’s Hub Head for OYO Rooms Hospitality, Lee Sun has been living in Sabah for more than a year now. Her most memorable and cherished moments here thus far is having a go at outdoor activities for the first time. She has already been out on scuba diving and river cruising adventures with friends. Lee Sun loves the hospitality and friendliness of the locals. According to her, if she ever leaves this state, she will miss having the abundance of seafood and especially saying ‘bah’ like a true local. In her spare time, she thrives for new adventures and exploring around Sabah, searching for uncharted places, and tasting different delicacies. You could say she’s done a lot since she first came here and is planning for more adventures in the future.
