EDITOR’S NOTE

EDITORIAL TEAM Hello Breeze readers, I’m personally excited about our March 2021 ‘Entrepreneur’ issue. It is my favourite theme for an issue that we have done a few times already. This is when we highlight various local and not known to many entrepreneurs who are making it in their own way to achieve more success.

Leading the pact is Poon Wan Ting, a makeup artist with over 10 years of experience and this issue’s Cover. She has been practising her craft right here in Sabah and through more recognition, she even went to Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, and Macao to work on her magic. Read about her in Personality. The pages of Feature give us a look on the rest of the pact of highlighted entrepreneurs, each with their own type of business and thoughts of what makes a successful entrepreneur. Eco News also features entrepreneurs in the form of the women community in Moyog, Penampang who are producing upcycled flower pots. Also check out Einstein Majanil in Music, our very own young Sabahan artist who is growing fast in popularity with his song covers and original tracks like his recent single Beaches. And not to forget, Big-D Burger Sandwiches in Restaurant Review. If you love western barbeque food especially Texas grill, this is the place to be and simply a must try. The food served here is extremely delicious. Enjoy going through the other pages in this issue and have a great month of March!

#RESPONSMALAYSIA OUTREACH PROGRAMME TO AID THOSE IN NEED IN RANAU

Ranau, 29-30 January 2021 - The #ResponsMALAYSIA team of volunteers travelled to the district of Ranau to provide food aid for the village people of Kg. Tinaum, Kg. Mangkapoh and Kg. Tambaliwan. #ResponsMALAYSIA is an outreach programme organised by Malaysian Red Crescent Kota Kinabalu City and Kelab Pacuan Empat Roda G6 Ranau (15 4WD vehicles were involved). Food aid was given to the selected villages because of the current difficulties to receive any form of aid due to the terrible condition of access roads. RTM representatives were also part of the team to help provide a media platform for village representatives to voice out their concerns. They expressed their requests to respective parties to develop their village areas in terms of water supply, road conditions and agriculture aid that are much needed. A total of 130 sets of food baskets were given to all villages. These include rice, oil, coffee, sugar, salt, soya sauce, eggs, noodles and face masks. The #ResponsMALAYSIA team had to endure hours of drives and walks through rainy weather and harsh surface conditions to accomplish their task. The path from Ranau town to Kg. Tinaum alone took 7 hours. For more information, go to Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu’s Facebook page.

grinding to success

M

any entrepreneurs are either emerging or still grinding for success. Trust us when we say, it isn’t easy to get a taste of sweet success. Here are some of our local Sabahan entrepreneurs to learn a thing or two of what’s their formula of success in the world of business.

Khalilah Khalil

Mėena Studio | Instagram: @shopmeenastudio Khalilah is a Kota Kinabalu native who established Méena Studio in 2019. Méena Studio is a contemporary hand-crafted jewellery brand born from the desire to redefine modernity and empower women to express their authentic selves. Méena Studio believes in a slow-fashion approach, designing and making each piece with care and detail from start to finish. It largely draws inspiration from everyday life, the beauty of the little things that surround our lives. As Khalilah puts it, every piece has its own unique story. When Khalilah started her first job as a fresh graduate, she discovered the beauty of clay while searching for a creative outlet. And the rest is history. She now has clients from all walks of life, all fascinated with designs that match their style or to experiment with new looks. Seeing them wearing her jewellery will always put a smile on Khalilah’s face, even more with international clients like the ones she has in Japan. Khalilah loves experimenting with new designs as it allows her to be creative and explore new ideas. It’s also a therapeutic process, bringing her to a new universe where it’s just the maker and the medium. She also loves engaging with her clients, sharing how-it’smade stories with them. It creates meaningful bonds with clients.

“Entrepreneurship requires a lot of hard work and there are no secret recipes for success. You have to constantly challenge yourself and strive for improvements daily, be it big or small. Enjoy the growth process, be genuine and give back when you can.”

Apart from that, helping clients find the best solutions to achieve their goals is also a very satisfying part of the job for Caleb. Two of his proud achievements were producing two online business platforms for the bird's nest industry Swiftlet Home and real estate industry Affordable Home. On his off days, Caleb enjoys gardening as a hobby. He loves the view of a well tended garden whenever he goes out to work. In the future, he hopes Caltec Expert can be the top local powerhouse to strengthen business brands in Sabah.

MUSIC

sabah’s musical einstein and AzimHebat. Since all five of them are fans of Lo-Fi and HipHop, they discovered a track by ProleteR called April Showers and remixed it into their beat. Beaches is about heartbreak and the toxicity of some individuals in relationships. As all four of them are independent musicians, they had to write, record, mix, and master the song themselves. The music video was also shot months after the track was done and had to be delayed a couple of times due to the MCO. Einstein took the opportunity to thank everyone that has supported him along the way, especially to Angelica, Reynold, Camelia, and Casey. Einstein had this to say when asked about promoting music online, “It’s certainly helped a lot! We can deny that the world is going online but it’s definitely the truth. Social media and streaming platforms are powerful tools. I get why people want to be viral, but I’m just happy people are enjoying music and sharing the joy with the people around them.”

P

apar native Einstein Majanil already has some great music under his belt considering he’s still fresh and new to the music industry. At just 24 years old, Einstein only started learning and making music in 2019 and is well on his way to being a household name. Recently, Einstein has released a new single titled Beaches. Read on and find out more about Einstein Majanil and his journey in the music industry. “Everybody can rap, some can sing. But little can do both”. Those are the words that made Einstein decide to pursue his musical career. He is inspired by Justin Bieber. Although he feels he doesn’t have the “manliest” voice out there, Einstein doesn’t let that stop him and will continue to make the best music he can. He’s also been listening to Ismail Izzani recently, as he’s trying to hone his Malay writing skills. Regarding his latest single, Beaches, Einstein notes that it was definitely a satisfying single to work on, especially due to the MCO. Beaches was recorded in collaboration with Renji, FEV,

The thought of people enjoying his song never gets old for Einstein. That’s why his most memorable moment was when people told him his music was played in a pub. His goal is to contribute in popularizing English or bilingual music in Sabah and even Malaysia. Though, he won’t limit himself as he’s still ready for the opportunity to produce Malay or even Kadazan songs in the future. @einsteinmajanil

TECH

Better audio with the fantech leviosa

F

antech is a gaming brand from our neighbours across the pond, Indonesia. They produce a lot of gaming peripherals from gaming mice to controllers, and to be honest they’re not bad actually. A few months ago, they introduced the Leviosa MCX01, a cardioid microphone, into their gaming peripheral portfolio. Let’s see if this mic can replace the mic on your laptop or headset. In the box you get a USB cable, a foldable tripod mount, a pop filter, and your usual user manual. Setting up the Leviosa is easy, you just need to mount it to the tripod, connect the cable from the mic to the PC, and pretty much plug & play from there on. My only complaint is the cable on the mic end is a bit loose at times and can easily plug off when you move the mic too much. The mic is gun metal black and features knobs to control the gain and the echo. At the bottom, you’ll find a 3.5mm headphone jack too while there’s RGB lighting under the metal mesh at the top. If you’re not into RGB, just putting the pop filter will block all the light from being seen. You’ll also find a mute button at the top that lights up when the mic is recording. I like this feature because it gives a physical indication that your mic is on, just in case you accidentally say something embarrassing during your online meetings.

by Noel Jinguli Image | Fantech 11

The Leviosa produces a balanced and clear sound. Your voice doesn’t get muffled and it doesn’t pick up too much wind noise either, especially with the pop filter on. If you’re producing content with it, you might find it useful that you won’t need to edit the recording too much to make it sound great. I can’t say much about music recording though, as that’s not really my forte. However, you can use it for your karaoke sessions too. Though, you still need a computer to plug in the USB, as I’ve found no way of getting it working without it. The best part is, it doesn’t cost much. For less than RM140, it’s the perfect mic for online meetings, classes, gaming sessions, and even YouTube and streaming work. You might even squeeze in voice over work as well. For other professional work like music recording, the Leviosa is good if you’re just getting started, though if you’re already a professional, you might just have a better mic already.

ECO NEWS

Small Steps for Big Changes

H

ave you ever heard of the “Butterfly Effect”? The term is philosophically used to describe how the smallest change or action can lead to a ripple effect, causing a dramatic change in the future. Well, at least that’s the gist of the theory. Another way to look at it is, a little can go a long way. That’s why in this month’s Eco News, we’ll be looking at action or change that can and have caused a big change in our fight to preserve the environment. Recently, a non-government organisation from Penampang, called the Ripple-Sabah Recycling Association (Ripple), is continuing to spread awareness for recycling. Their effort of turning used glass bottles into beautiful pots has garnered many to support the cause. And it isn’t only the environment that benefits from this project, as lives are also being changed in the process. Ripple director, Jenifer Lasimbang, said that a team of 14 communities led by women from Moyog are working hard to sustain the project. Before the bottles can be turned them into pots, they need to be crushed by a machine that turn into sand. The women then work on the sand to turn them into pots to be sold. Money from selling the pots will then be used to buy rice and cooking oil. This is where the project becomes quite interesting. In order to encourage the community to recycle, the group is offering rice and cooking oil in exchange for glass bottles. So, for every 20kg of glass bottles donated, the community members will receive

by Noel Jinguli Image | Ripple 13

10kg of rice. It might seem like such a small amount for the hard work of collecting the bottles for most of us, but for the community, the rice and cooking oil goes a long way for them. So what does this have to do with the butterfly effect? Well, Jenifer initially started this project because someone got hurt by a glass shard during a gotong royong. Imagine that, from what seems like an insignificant piece of glass has now turned into an effort to preserve the environment and help a community. The group has now sold more than 500 pots to ensure the sustainability of the project. Jenifer has developed and presented a business plan to pilot women entrepreneurs and the team as some are interested in coordinating glass bottle collections while some are venturing into the pot business. If you’re interested in supporting the project, the pots can be purchased at the Moyog Innovation House at Jalan Kolopis, Penampang. For the time being, let’s become witnesses and see how big of a butterfly effect this project can cause for the good of all.

AUtomotive

Would an apple car be an instant success?

Y

es, you read that title right. Apple is rumoured to be producing their own car. As of now, there aren’t many details surrounding the whole rumour, but wouldn’t it be fun to just talk about it and speculate what we can expect in a car from one of the biggest tech names in the world. Take NOTE, this is all just for fun, none of the things written here are true. It’d be awesome if they were though. Let’s just get the obvious ideas out of the way. It’ll definitely be an electric vehicle and the center console would be powered by Apple’s iOS CarPlay. So you’ll definitely have Siri to help you with navigation, answering texts and calls, or even playing your favourite music. Self-driving capabilities would also be one of the plans for them, since they can develop their own software for it. Next, what will Apple call it? The “iCar” or “Apple Car” does come to mind, and yes, it’ll sound ridiculous. If it does happen, it won’t surprise me one bit. Another question would be, would they partner with anyone to develop it? It was claimed that they

by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash 15

were in talks with Hyundai, but that died down after Hyundai rejected the claim. Do they even need to partner with established car manufacturers though? If they want to play it safe, then yes. However, they do have the resources to start small and still succeed. Think back to the Swatch Car. Lastly, how can the car industry benefit from this? First off, automotive technology development would skyrocket with the added competition in play. With said development, cars should become safer and drivers/passengers will have much better experiences in them. Cars will be more efficient, especially electric vehicles. Self-driving technology will improve drastically. And who knows, an iteration of the flying car might even come sooner than later. On that note, it’ll always be fun to speculate what it’ll look like, what type of car it’ll be, or even how it’ll perform compared to other cars on the road, regardless of the brand or what type of fuel they would run on. As a driver, passenger and witness in the automotive world, we’re the ones who’ll benefit from the changes and have the most fun from it.

Poon Wan Ting: Beyond MakeUp Artistry

ondly known as Poon, she is a makeup artist who specializes in bridal makeup services and has been thriving in the industry for the past 10 years. The Breeze Team sat with her to dive deeper into the world of weddings, pre-wedding photoshoots, and beyond. 15

Breeze (B) : Hi! Let’s start with getting to know you. Poon (P) : Hi, I’m Poon! I’ve been a makeup artist for the past 10 years since I was 19 years old. I attended Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School and later on went to Perth for my foundation studies in business. B : Why did you decide to go into this line of business? P : When I was in Perth, I loved helping friends to do their hair and makeup as a hobby. I started doing makeup and hair for prom too. I really enjoyed it. Everyone thought I’d get a job and stay in Perth but I came back. I actually never thought to do makeup as a job. I have always loved wedding stuff but there was no specific course for it at the time. I started out working at a local bridal shop and learnt basic makeup. I definitely learnt so much while working there. It’s a good place to start to get into being a wedding makeup artist. B : What drives you in your work? P : I really enjoy what I do. I realized when I was doing my foundation studies, that it wasn’t my passion. As a makeup artist specializing in bridal, when I work with my clients (brides), they trust me with a very important event in their lives. I enjoy the relationship I have with them, even though I only get to know them on the job. I still keep all my thank you cards and ang pows I receive from my clients. It’s the appreciation that I feel from them that really keeps me going. B : Do you have a role model or someone who inspires you? P : Honestly, I don’t have a specific role model. I continuously upgrade myself and my skills by attending intensive courses, going as far as Taiwan. I think it’s important to stay current and be inspired by new knowledge and looks. B : Through your career, what are some of the challenges that you’ve faced? P : The first year was not easy. It was challenging. Because you’re new, it was difficult to find clients and get jobs on your own. As a wedding makeup artist, you’re not just a makeup artist Sometimes you are also an assistant to the bride and a personal image consultant too. I’ve also experienced blackouts and bride’s dress zipper breaking on the job, and I had to calm my clients down while helping them find solutions. In the past year, jobs are much less. There are also a lot of weddings being cancelled or postponed. B : Has you work brought you out of the state or the country? P : Oh yes! My first job outside of KK was to Labuan for the

wedding of my housemate's friend from Perth. Then through word of mouth, I started getting more jobs there. 4 to 5 years ago I started getting more outstation jobs to Sandakan, Keningau, Tawau, Labuan, Brunei, Penang, KL, and Ipoh. I also follow clients to do their makeup for outstation pre-wedding photoshoots in Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, and Macao. B : Wow! What do you feel are your biggest highlights or achievements in your career as a makeup artist? P : The biggest achievement for me is providing my services to so many brides in a year and participating in the biggest event of their lives. B : How do you see yourself 10 years from now? P : Actually, I also teach students. So I think 10 years from now I see myself doing less work on the go. Maybe focusing more on training small groups of people on makeup and hair. I would probably take on select clients for bridal work and prioritize my time for myself and my family. B : Any words of encouragement for those who are interested in tapping into the industry? P : My advise is to prepare yourself for the industry. It’s not easy but highly satisfying if you can do it well. It’s not all about the glamour. It’s a lot of hard work. For example, for Chinese weddings, you may need to start preparing the bride at 1am and stay on for the rest of the day. If you have the passion, go for it! If you are determined, you will succeed in what you do. Be humble even if you have talent and continue to build yourself. Fun Fact: Apart from upgrading her makeup artistry, Poon has been eager to learn new things like baking, calligraphy, and pottery. She is also an avid coffee lover and caféphile. She enjoys cafe hopping, spending time alone and relaxing amidst a busy schedule. @poonwanting 18

Hold On, Just A Little Longer

E

ver since COVID-19 introduced itself to the world, the line between “working” and “staying at home” becomes indistinguishable to many. While some of us are given the liberty to wear sweatpants and old baggy t-shirts working from the comforts of our home, for others, it might just be the only thing that they can afford to wear at all. So, what can we do to help out those who are struggling?

doesn’t require a monetary outlay. A smile and a thank you to the custodians in your building goes a long way.

1. Equip yourself with knowledge. If you really want to help, then understand the situation and the risks at stake. This will not only help you to take concrete steps towards protecting yourself but also the health of those around you, which eventually will break the chain and things and go back to normal.

For those who got furloughed, struggling, hungry, and desperate, remember that every storm runs out of rain, eventually. Just hold your head up high and hold on, just a little longer!

2. Reach out and connect. If you know someone who is hiring, do not hesitate to share to those who are in dire need for work. For some, these small jobs are more of a lounging activity, while for others, its food for the family. 3. Look after your neighbour. You may be at low risk from developing life-threatening consequences from the virus, but it may not be the same for your neighbors and loved ones whose immune systems are compromised. Take the time to check up on your neighbour from time to time. You have no idea how a simple gesture can make someone’s day. 4. Be of service. Working from home allows you to have the liberty to squeeze in some free time. Take this time to do some charity work for your community. Sometimes, acts of kindness

5. Support your local business. If you have a favourite hawker stall in mind, remember to support their business. A little help goes a long way for them. If you can afford to buy the entire roast chicken, why not right?

What is EmSlimSculpt ?

E

mslimsculpt is a revolutionary non-invasive procedure that targets fat and strengthens muscle together. Emslimsculpt is an FDA-approved body contouring treatment that simultaneously burns fat and builds muscle for the abdomen. It is also the only FDA-approved non surgical butt lift. Emslimsculpt uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) to trigger supramaximal contractions (the type that cannot be achieved by voluntary muscle action). Each 30 minutes is equivalent to 20,000 contractions. Because Emslimsculpt strengthens core muscles, hence, it could strengthen the individual’s back muscles and pelvic muscles. The strengthening of these muscles can help reduce the risk of lower back pain, poor posture, & overall body fatigue. In some women, Emslimsculpt has also shown to improve diastasis recti, a condition of abdominal muscle weakening and separation from pregnancy. Emslimsculpt is a comfortable procedure. You may feel a sensation some likened to an intense abdominal or gluteal workout. Some individuals may experience mild and temporary muscle soreness the next day. It is basically zero down time. You can return to your daily activities immediately after the Emslimsculpt session. BENEFITS OF EMSLIMSCULPT 1. Precise control over fat burning & muscle building 2. Each treatment takes only 30 minutes 3. Suitable for individuals with BMI up to 35 4. Noticeable results 5. Non-invasive, no recovery, no downtime 6. Build Muscle 7. Reduce Cellulite 8. DENTAL

bye bye bad breath

T

his is a common issue we face daily and I’m sure it bothers almost everyone. Bad breath will either haunt us or distract us from a conversation with a friend, and it doesn’t matter who has it. That’s why this month we’ll help everyone take care of their bad breath. With Dr. Sylvia Lim of Phi Dental, we’ll discuss the causes, effects, and ways to prevent bad breath.

To reduce or prevent bad breath, Dr. Sylvia advises everyone to:

Bad breath is called halitosis in the dental world. It’s characterized by an unpleasant odor in the mouth. The most common cause of halitosis is bad oral hygiene. Food particles left in the mouth will break down and produce sulfur compounds.

1. Brush your teeth after you eat. Keep a toothbrush at work to use after eating. 2. Floss at least once a day. 3. Brush your tongue. 4. Clean your dentures or dental appliances. 5. Avoid dry mouth. 6. Adjust your diet. 7. Regularly get a new toothbrush. 8. Schedule regular dental checkups.

Sometimes, bad breath can also be a sign of other dental issues you might have. Gum disease (periodental) is one of them and if left untreated, can damage the gums and jawbone. Poorly fitted dental appliances, yeast infections of the mouth, and even cavities are also causes of bad breath.

Other than these steps, you can also try chewing fresh herbs, including fiber-rich fruits and vegetables in your diet, and consuming food rich in Vitamin C. Yogurt can also be added into your diet. It’s not only an excellent source of calcium, but is also a great source of reducing bad breath.

Dry mouth, or xerostomia, can also cause bad breath, as saliva is necessary to moisten the mouth, neutralize acids produced by plaque, and wash away dead cells that accumulate in the mouth. One of the ways to solve this issue is to chew sugarless gum, as it helps stimulate saliva production.

However, even when we know the secrets of bad breath, it’s up to us to take care of our mouths and teeth. Don’t neglect the feature that will certainly determine a good or bad first impression of ourselves to the people around us.

BEING CREATIVE

CNY celebrations – SSSSH not this year, alas

I

t’s Chinese New Year – or is it? I am in the UK, and normally, Chinatown in Soho in London is a buzz and a clang with gongs and lions and tourists and all sorts. Not this year it ain’t. Lots of red lanterns but that’s about it. UK Lockdown We are in lockdown, and have been for about a month. No going out except for essential doctor visits, supermarket shopping, work that can’t be done at home and walks with one other person outside your household at a distance of two meters. Those are the rules. Most people are keeping to them but there is still the occasional 70-person party which makes everyone very hot under the collar. And now quarantine has set in too – hotel quarantine, for those coming from the red list countries like many in South America. It’s making a difference, and we learn whether Boris is going to release the reins a little after 22 February… It seems to me that we are going to live with this disease, and we had better get used to it. Once the vaccine is administered to as many people as possible and people are aware that they will probably have to have it topped up regularly, we can get on with our lives. I’m not a doctor, but we can dial down the panic now I think. Covid Communication Communication is my hobby horse – you’ll have got that now. I have realised that I talk to more people than I did before, I treasure my walks in the snow and the sunshine (the combination is a winner) and Covid has done quite a lot for interaction. I have a two hour Zoom call every Monday with a friend to do the Cryptic Crosswords in the newspaper – getting better, although often I am completely stymied. In the evening six of us do a quiz – we make up the rounds, and it has been quite creative and a lot of fun. I Zoom people. I meet people for a walking chat. I phone people. It’s great. I hope we will keep doing this when we are released. Holidays are a puzzle. We have been told that we shouldn’t even begin to book summer hols in Britain, let alone further afield. I want to go to France, to eat cheese and charcuterie, to drink delicious wine, to enjoy the language and the sunshine. I want to see my son and his partner in Spain. Both may not be imminent, but I am sure it will be possible at some point. I shall be back in Malaysia probably in August – vaccined up, and ready to roll. Cheers Oxford/AstraZeneca.

Vaccination Myths Forewarned is forearmed (see what I did there?). We have managed to keep well ahead with the vaccination programme in the UK, and I had mine today, much earlier than I had expected. My second will be on May 3rd. Today’s was administered by a girl who looked about 12 from the Army, who, as we chatted, told me that she was a front line medic. This fresh faced young woman is the person you see when your leg has been blown off by a mine… I was humbled, and very pleased to have had my dose of whatever it is that is going to knock Covid into touch. Ignore the nonsense. Please. So much rubbish is talked about what’s in them, and Panorama, a UK television news programme, showed a completely fake film about anti-vaxxing to a mixed group of people and the result have been strange. Some have believed it, some have resisted the nonsense, others are concerned. The Indian community is one that has been targeted by this disinformation. For once, this really is fake news. People have been reluctant to have the vaccine – not all, of course, but enough to encourage Citizen Khan creator Adil Ray to get British Asian stars together - including comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Meera Syal and cricketer Moeen Ali - to dispel the myths that are going round. They are joined by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and former Conservative Party Chairman Baroness Warsi. As an example of the piffle that is doing the rounds, people are being told that the vaccine derives from a cow, which is sacred to Hindus – and this is NOT TRUE. As NOT TRUE as Bill Gates’ cunning plan to make sure that a microchip is poked into our arms along with the vaccine, so that he can record and follow our every move. Now, I know I am pretty damn fascinating, but I cannot imagine that young William is going to be hanging on my every activity. It doesn’t alter your DNA either – why would it? Apparently this year we must be sensible in our life choices to ensure damage limitation. There, you see, that vaccine again. Take things carefully, don’t overdo it, and make sure you avoid burnout. Listen to Auntie Sylvia. She’s read the horoscopes! Listen every one, when the vaccine is anywhere near you, stick your arm out and hope for a jab. It seems to me the best possible way to celebrate Chinese New Year. All the very best for the Year of the OX .

Rants & Raves

working from home

F

or the past year, most of us have been working from home. Sitting in front of a laptop all day and getting back pains! Who knew our dream work scenario would be so… boring? Remember when we were all happy to be working from the comforts of our own home? Well, now it’s getting kind of stressful. Working from home also has its downsides since there are so many distractions for us not to do our work. There isn’t exactly anyone around to tell us what to do and tell us off when we’re not working properly. With so many distractions, here are some ways we can stay focused on our work. If you’re super disorganised and your desktop looks a mess, try organising all your folders and files into one place. That said, an unorganised desktop can make you feel disorganised as well. So clear up your desktop if you haven’t already! If it’s still hard for you to find what you’re looking for after sorting everything into a folder, try creating your own organised background! A quick visit onto Canva, and you’ll be able to create different categories like school, work and others. Make sure you figure out how big each box will be so you can fit all your folders into one spot!

distracting and set a timer for how long you need to be working. So throughout your timer, your tree will be growing and any time you open a blacklisted tab, it’ll remind you that your plant is still growing. If you choose to continue on this website, your plant will die. Which is kind of a fun way to keep you working if you want to keep your plant alive! Lastly, if you want some motivation to keep you going, try using Momentum. It’s also a browser extension that allows you to setup your main task for the day, to-do lists and it even gives you a motivational quote! The whole page is customisable, and you can even save links to a shortcut for easier access. So come on now and get back to work!

If you’re always getting distracted by YouTube or other tabs you’ve opened up, you’re not the only one! A great tip to keep us all off these entertaining tabs is to try using Forest. Forest is a free browser extension that can help you stay focused on your work! It does this by allowing you to blacklist websites you find

POP CULTURE

how podcasts came to be

I

love podcasts. I listen to them everyday to and from work. They’re a great source for entertainment if you aren’t in the mood for music or can’t watch a video, especially when you’re driving. Recently, I found myself putting a podcast on just to drown out the silence when I’m working from home or during a gaming session. By now, I’m sure all of you know what a podcast is, but do you know what podcasts really are and how it started? Before they were called podcasts, “audio-blogging” was the term used to describe a digital audio file that’s been uploaded to the internet, available for listeners to download or stream through their preferred audio players. Put simply, they’re generally a series of mainly audio only shows for people to enjoy, just like the old radio talk shows before the advent of the internet. Two people are credited to have introduced this medium, Adam Curry and David Winer, in 2004. Though, it wasn’t until 2005 that the term “podcast” was first used and made popular by Ben Hammersley in The Guardian newspaper. It’s a combination of “iPod” and “broadcast”, since many started using iPods to listen to their favourite podcast shows. Of course there were many trying their hand at podcasting, but only a handful of popular shows available for listeners at the time. Now, there are thousands, if not millions of podcasts people can tune in to. There are a few types of podcasts out there. First, there are ones that are based on the classic talk show, whereby a host invites guests and talks to them. Experts, celebrities, and even the

by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash 29

average joe are invited to talk about certain topics, experiences, or even just to share their day-to-days. Another type of podcast is the themed ones. They can either be scripted or semi-scripted, all centred around a theme. An example would be podcasts talking about true crime, sports, or even aviation. The podcast industry amassed billions of dollars in the last few years. In 2019, the global podcast market was estimated at USD 9.28 billion. Today, there are 144 million podcast listeners in the United States alone. There are more than 850,000 active podcasts being streamed on platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts. So, whenever you’re listening to your favourite podcast, just remember that you might not be the only one listening at the same time. And if you’re ever in search of new podcasts to listen to, I’d recommend shows such as Off Topic, RedWeb, and FaceJam. These shows casually talk about daily life, true crime, and food, respectively of course.

restaurant review

W

hen we hear sloppy joes or ‘burger meleleh’ we think about burgers drenched in saucy goodness of hickory that fills every mouthful with bursting flavours while having some fun getting all messy along the way. Well, put that in a platter fit for a family and the meaty circus will surely savour your taste buds and make you crave for more. However, the core of a good burger or a burrito is not on how sloppy it is, it is how every filling matches with each other – and keeps you wanting more even though you’re as full as a balloon. Texas grill is not commonly found in Kota Kinabalu itself, as it goes through quite the process and skill to smoke the meat and getting that perfect right timing. The meats undergo a smoked process over hickory wood or oak wood which are imported from US itself. With roughly 18 hours processing and managing temperature to achieve the right texture and still preserve the juicy meat and fat that will just melt away in a bite, the effort put into each and every burger, rib and brisket served not only counts as hard work and dedication, but the heart and soul can be tasted through the food itself. Well hidden behind the roads of Putatan, Big-D Burger Sandwiches is a hidden gem that Sabahans can look forward to. So, mark your checklist to try out its authentic Texas style grills, because it’s the only one in Sabah nearest to authentic Texas BBQ. 37

Big-d burger sandwiches

Humble beginnings began in 2009, when the Sabahan owner Chef Dan himself flew to America and had practiced Smoke and Barbeque techniques with the known expert we all know of today; Aaron Franklin – Texas BBQ Master. With lessons learnt from the very master himself, during Aaron’s prime time – Dan went through hours of training and getting to know meats from scratch. Recently opening Big-D Burgers Sandwiches right under the warm home of himself, as a nominee for Michelin Star Award, and Award Winner on Australian Good Food & Travel Guide, the humble chef enjoys simple setups and serves loyal regulars who are not only customers but also becomes a friend of his as he shares his passion for Tex-Mex food. Chef Dan himself prepares everything, from shipping oak wood from the US, selecting finest ingredients of meat, smoking and down to plating – Their burgers are all the rave but the platter is an option to definitely go for, if you’re going for the authentic experience - Texas style. Definitely top it off with their signature Nachos too! I have personally been to United States of America myself, and tried out Tex-Mex restaurants. Nothing thus far has made me craving for more meat until I tried out Big-D Burger Sandwiches, in-fact even better with a touch of local preference and their Texas grills

are on point with tender meat just nice and juicy. I was ecstatic because Dan is serious with his barbeque! We had the chance to try out Bestsellers! The Personal Smoke set mentioned it feeds 1-2pax; hands down it’s a lie! Portion is definitely on-par as American styled, averagely feeding 3-5pax and for the price of the serving, it is very reasonably charged. Briskets were smoked and cooked to the right texture leaving the meat soft and tender, served with sides of Fries of the day, Jalapeno, Sweet Pickle and refreshing Onion. AND! Not a Tex-Mex without some Buffalo Wings! Did I forget to mention it also comes with 1 of their Smoke Brisket Burger. Everything was a good mix, no fancy sauces, just real meat and authentic smoking goodness in every bite that melts away. Carnivores please enjoy your meal at is finest. The Big-D Cheesy Nachos (Lamb) was among favourites of all favourites! The Signature Cheesy Nachos drenched in homemade sauces, with fresh grilled meat chunks and caramelised onion. Every bite was flavourful and happiness fills the stomach! Perfect for that gathering party and game nights among friends, the portion is just nice and with rich cheese and sloppy-ness. The Big-D Loaded Burrito (Lamb) is definitely loaded with meaty goodness complementing to Tex-Mex menu must have list. The burrito was huge with the right amount of sauce as the meat filled the homemade tortilla wrap nicely holding out with fresh greens and caramelised onion to balance out the juicy meat. Best for takeaway style and still getting the best out of it.

The Big-D Philly Cheese Steak is served with a homemade special Chiz-Whiz sauce as the highlight for this burger along its fresh grill prime cut tenderloin and ribeye slices, topped with caramelised onion. Every bite leaves your mouth watering for more. Did I mention the homemade wedges served along side was is just as good? If you’re in for a massive impact to your tastebuds and you’re a fan of barbeque, you will not regret trying out Big-D Burger Sandwiches. It is the closest you can get to tasting Aaron Franklin’s Texas BBQ from none other than his apprentice himself – Chef Dan! Fancy for something else not on the menu but want to try out smoky goodness? Having mastered Cuban, Mexican and western food, Big-D Burger Sandwiches also takes custom orders to cater to local preferences. From meatballs to seafood selections and smoked duck, just drop a request and anticipate recommendations from the chef!
