According to the Sabah State Government release, the lowering of foreign ownership threshold from RM1million to RM600,000 with effect from 1 April 2022, as well as to include commercial suites and properties under construction are moves well received by SHAREDA. In addition to that, the removal of clause 6.3 which requires the prior approval by Pejabat Hasil Bumi would positively facilitate the sale of property to foreigners. “The introduction of our own Sabah-MM2H scheme would further encourage more investment into Sabah when the Asian markets are fully open by next year. By then, developers and state government agencies should join forces to promote Sabah in overseas markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea and China” says Datuk Chua. kinabalu international school: nurturing global citizens

E

stablished in the early 1970s, Kinabalu International School (KIS) is the oldest international school in Sabah. KIS has gained a well-respected reputation in providing high quality education programmes following the National Curriculum Programme of Study for England and Wales. Ever since its establishment, KIS has built up a long history in educating young minds for 50 years. Initially, KIS was set up to provide a British education for the children of expatriates in Sabah, and it all started with a rented premise from the St. John’s Ambulance Association in Kota Kinabalu with the parents of students attending the school as the teachers. However, after starting to recruit only the best qualified educators from all over the world, KIS started to get recognised due to its commitment in setting high standards from various educational organisations. Following its rapid growth and success, in 1995, KIS was finally able to build and open its own campus located at Bukit Padang, where the current school building proudly stands today. With the vision of ‘Nurturing Global Citizens’, KIS is dedicated to providing excellent education in a caring and respectful environment, while challenging students to achieve their fullest potential as successful global citizens in upholding the values of equality and the development of a better world. KIS is a school where everybody is celebrated as an individual as they take pride in providing a safe, inclusive, and caring

14

environment in which young people are able to live and work together in a spirit of harmony and mutual respect. Today, the student body at KIS comprises nearly 400 students of close to 30 different nationalities from around the world, with their professional teaching staff representing nearly ten nationalities. KIS currently provides high quality education for students aged 3 to 18, from Early Years Foundation where they introduced learning through play, to Primary, and to Secondary which includes the sixth form at KIS. Accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), KIS is one of only seven schools in Malaysia to have received this accreditation and is one of less than 350 schools in the world.

This means that the school has been rigorously assessed by an external and independent organisation against a set benchmark of international standards across all areas of the school. Apart from that, being one of the founding members of the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA), as well as members of the Association of International Malaysian Schools (AIMS), KIS is able to give its students various opportunities and exposure to participate in various events and competitions of the region, which includes the annual FOBISIA Games at Primary, Under 13 and Under 15 level, as well as in FOBISIA Literacy and Maths Competitions, Music and Drama Festivals, for a rich cultural, sporting and academic excellence. Furthermore, KIS also provides a number of professional development opportunities to its teachers, as they regularly attend courses and workshops with their AIMS and FOBISIA colleagues to keep up-to-date with best practice from around the world. Furthermore, as a certified centre for IGCSE and A-Level Cambridge International Examinations, KIS students are given the opportunity to gain qualifications to study at some of the best colleges and universities worldwide. Following the excellent results of their students, many have been offered places at prestigious universities worldwide. Head on over to the Personality section, and read about Kinabalu International School’s (KIS) high achieving student, the 18-year old Celeste Chung, the first Sabahan student who has successfully secured her placement at one of the world’s top higher learning institutions, Stanford University, California.

‘aramaitiii’ with marsha & velvet

F

or their deep-rooted love of the Land Below the Wind, Sabah, two prolific singers Marsha Milan, 37 and Velvet Aduk, 35, constantly upholds folksongs for more than four years. Willing to fork out their own money without relying on sponsorships, their hard work clearly paid off by the incredible response of their songs. The song Sumandak Sabah managed to garner more than 15 million views on YouTube, Oi Gaman (more than 4.3 million) and Insan Tadau (more than 258,000). Recently, they came up with a new song titled “Aramaitiii”, Marsha and Velvet are indeed gratified that they are sponsored for the first time by the company Qhazanah Sabah Berhad. The aforementioned company is the first to believe in them and this definitely brings a significant meaning. “For the past four years we have been on our own and working hard truly for our love towards the culture in Sabah. We want Sabah’s name and culture to be elevated even more, not just in Malaysia but in the eyes of the world. Despite the absence of support from any organization before this, we strived and remained passionate to fight for what we believe in. Even though we received sponsorship for “Aramaitiii” in the nick of time, we never stopped being thankful towards Qhazanah Sabah Berhad,” said them. Excited to share about “Aramaitiii”, Marsha and Velvet dedicate the song for the unity in Sabah that remains strong up till today. Comprising more than 40 ethnic groups, the people 20

of the state share an incredible power of unity. For that reason, they chose Aramaitiii as the title of the new song. The term is definitely synonymous and often uttered by Sabahans, and even known across Malaysia too. Compared to the previous music videos (MV), Marsha and Velvet elevate more aspects for Aramaitiii’s MV. Marsha herself played the role as the director of the project. They also used the service of the famous stylist, Saerah Ridzuan from Hello Stylar. Saerah once won the Best Costume award at the International Music Video Awards in the United Kingdom, last year. In the meantime, Marsha and Velvet are very grateful to everyone who made sure the project was well done. Especially the sponsors including Sabah Parks, Kiawayan Dance Club, The Kaingaran, as well as the residents of Kampung Monsok, Tambunan. Aramaitiii music video is now available to watch on YouTube. beyond limits. It’s always been a dream of mine to bring my music to the world and Warner Music is perfectly suited to help me reach the widest audience possible. With Warner Music and What the Duck, I’ll have an amazing set of partners that will help me achieve my vision and goal.” Warner Music Asia announced on 21 April 2022 that it has formed a strategic alliance with Thailand’s premier independent record company What the Duck by signing Valentina Ploy, one of its most accomplished singer-songwriters.

T

hai-Italian artist and Warner Music Asia’s latest signee – Valentina Ploy, has dropped her first single of the year “Bla Bli Blu” with a bold splash of pink on all digital streaming platforms.

This deal will see Warner Music Asia add the established Bangkok-based star to its roster of prominent singers, and will serve to support the What the Duck label in its work to elevate Valentina’s career to new heights. Warner Music will be harnessing the support of Warner Music Thailand to strengthen her domestic fan base, and utilizing the Group’s regional network to introduce her work to music lovers throughout Asia and beyond.

Synonymous to “I love you”, “Bla Bli Blu” is a love language created by the Thai-Italian artist to express her love through this catchy feel-good track that’s she co-wrote with Richard Craker and Jackson Dimiglio. A glimpse into Valentina’s multilingualism, the pre-hook is a cheeky preview to her proficiency in Italian, French, and Spanish, as she professes her love in these languages before diving into a grand confession through her very own love language – “Bla Bli Blu”. In explaining the inspiration behind the bathroom-written track that she speaks very fondly of; Valentina conveyed her difficulties in expressing her love in those three words as it can sometimes feel limiting. Putting her own spin into this expression, “Bla Bli Blu” carries an infectious charm and endearment that is hard to resist. “Bla Bli Blu” will be accompanied by an adorable music video starring Valentina herself, and German-Thai actor Nino Wongchaiseree. As you’ll be tickled pink, the pair’s chemistry will make you relieve all the exhilaration a romance can offer, and have you fall in love with the compatible on-screen couple. Available this evening at 7pm (SGT), the official music video of “Bla Bli Blu” will be made live on Valentina Ploy’s YouTube channel. Keep your eyes on the next “It Girl” on the block as “Bla Bli Blu” marks the first of many releases Valentina Ploy has in the pipeline with Warner Music Asia for the year. Valentina shared, “I am so happy to be working with Warner Music. Very excited and grateful to become part of the family as I feel that they support my vision of developing my artist career

andheld gaming was first popularised with the introduction of the GameBoy by Nintendo. Since then, there have been many gamers looking to satisfy their gaming needs while on the go. Nintendo is still dominating : the market with their Switch. However, new competitors are now hot on their heels. Competitors focused on PC gaming. Competitors such as the Aya Neo Next. The Aya Neo Next is a handheld portable Windows computer. If you’ve heard of Valve’s Steam Deck, the Next is similar to it. You might think Aya Neo copied the Steam Deck, but the idea of a portable handheld gaming PC was present way before the Steam Deck was introduced. In fact, the Next is the successor of Aya Neo’s previous 2021 Pro from last year. So, even though it looks very familiar, keep in mind that handheld design through the years haven’t had many significant changes, resulting in a lot of devices looking similar.

shoulders. The main difference, in terms of design, between this and the Steam Deck is the lack of touch pads that are present on the Steam Deck. The price tag of the Next would be a turn off to most gamers. At $1315, it’s more expensive compared to the Steam Deck’s most expensive model. However, you do need to keep in mind that Aya Neo is a much smaller company than Valve, which means they can only produce limited numbers of devices at this point. However, it’s great that companies such as Aya Neo are putting out devices such as the Next. It gives consumers more choices and gives bigger companies a run for the money.

Regarding the specs of the Aya Neo Next, it sports an 8-core Ryzen 7 5800U APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) clocked at 4.2GHz. The APU is built on AMD’s Zen 3 architecture, and is a full generational upgrade compared to the one found on the 2021 Pro. It’s also powered by the Vega 8 onboard graphic card. Although the Vega 8 is an older part, it is still capable of hitting 60fps (frames per second) in most modern titles. It has 16GB RAM to compliment the APU. Gamers would also be able to upgrade the storage unil upto 2TB. The simple design of the Next is inspired by the Nintendo Switch. The 7-inch 1280x800 resolution display is accompanied by the ABXY buttons and joystick on the right, D-Pad and joystick on the left. It also sports triggers and bumpers on either side of the 22

T

here are many famous automotive brands around the world. The best thing for a brand is how one term can give an image that associates it with their brand. Mustang, rotary engines, F1, each of these terms help associate consumers to Ford, Mazda, and Ferrari respectively. Well, what do you think of when someone mentions VTEC? Exactly, Honda! One of the most underrated technologies from an underrated brand is actually one of the most used terms in the car world.

BRV (i-VTEC), plus the Accord, CRV, Civic, and the upcoming HRV (VTEC Turbo). These models carry a heritage that has long made Honda what it is today. Honda’s determination to make better cars for consumers is only limited by what they can think and dream of. That’s why Honda’s The Power of Dreams slogan is perfect for what they have always strived for.

So, what is VTEC? It actually stands for Variable Valve & Lift Electronic Control. Hey, I’m not saying the acronym makes sense, but it’s much easier to pronounce. It was developed by Honda to improve the volumetric efficiency of their internal combustion engine. This has resulted in better and higher performance at high RPMs (Revolution Per Minute) while providing lower fuel consumption at low RPMs. Simply put, you get better fuel mileage when you drive below, for example 6000RPM, while getting the best out of your engine when you go past that. Through the years, Honda has steadily developed VTEC since its introduction in the 80’s. In the 2000’s, i-VTEC (intelligentVTEC) was used in models such as the K series FD2 Civic Type R. That specific model boasted 220hp. A few years ago, Honda introduced VTEC Turbo to further enhance the VTEC experience for better fuel economy, balanced performance, and is safer for the environment. Some famous Honda models that have utilised VTEC to the fullest were the Integra Type-R, Civic Type-R, and famously the NSX Type-R. These days, you can get the i-VTEC and VTEC Turbo experience yourself with the City, City Hatchback, and

CELESTE CHUNG: INSPIRING YOUTH ACTIVIST

Women’s top, skirt & handbag from Lacoste | Jesselton Duty Free

Celeste Chung

KIS Graduating Class of 2022 Founder of Youth For The Future is where Youth For The Future comes into the picture. The organisation strives in creating community centres and teaching kids, and right now they are supporting about 10,000 young girls at school. Celeste owes many of her successes to her mother, who always supported her in doing what she loves. “Although she doesn’t believe it, my mom is the person who inspires me everyday. She sacrificed a lot to give us a good education and I want to use that education the right way.” - Celeste Chung.

C

eleste Chung, 18, born and raised from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, attended Kinabalu International School (KIS) for 5 years, where she studied IGCSE and A-Levels in Chemistry, Biology, Geography, and Maths. Celeste is also known for her inspiring non-profit work, and has tremendous experience in speaking at conferences and workshops. Just recently, Celeste got accepted to Stanford University, one of the best universities in the US. Throughout her years at KIS, she has made lots of fond memories. Celeste enjoyed taking part in sports activities like Track and Field, football, served as the president of various charity committees, and was highly involved in the student council. Moreover, Celeste is also an excellent student academically! Celeste was the youngest recipient of the KIS Global Citizenship Award and was on the IGCSE Honors board two years ago. However, in her free time, she would go skateboarding with her friends, as she feels that skateboarding is a good form of stress relief and a good opportunity to learn new skills each week. Besides that, Celeste enjoys doing non-profit and youth leadership works. She is also a passionate advocate on women empowerment. Celeste has organised and given many talks at various conferences on issues close to her heart which includes the stateless community, gender equality, and education for all. When asked to describe herself, Celeste calls herself ambitious and passionate. She has a great passion in advocating for women and the youth. At a young age, she founded her own Non-profit organisation called Youth For The Future, an organisation that strives for education equality for all. According to Celeste, the law in Sabah states that Stateless children are not allowed to access school as they are being denied the rights to, which

Celeste recently got accepted to Stanford University, and it still feels surreal for her. Growing up, she always dreamt of going to Stanford. Celeste recalls doing her own research and making all university application arrangements on her own. She wrote tons of essays for her college applications, where she talked a lot about her goals in empowering women and how she will keep on doing so post-college. Besides that, she also highlighted Malaysian and Sabahan culture in her essays. When the admission results came in, it was nerve-racking for Celeste. She recalls checking the results by herself in her room, because she was worried of getting rejected. However, much to her surprise, she was astonished to learn that she was accepted to go to Stanford! Hence, Celeste will be attending Stanford in California, USA, this coming September where she will be studying a four-year course in political science and feminist studies. In the future, Celeste hopes to participate in politics as she sees the lack of women representation in parliament. According to Celeste, in 2020, there was only 14% of women representation in the government and that’s really little for a country with 50% women. Voices of women are not heard as much, which is why, as a woman herself, Celeste feels determined to vouch for the women in this country. Celeste’s advice to her juniors or to the youth hoping to pursue their dreams is to just go for it. “Applying to US colleges was really stressful but it all worked out in the end. So do it even if you’re scared.” - Celeste Chung. And that’s Celeste Chung for you, a top-scoring student, a young activist, an aspiring leader of the youth, and an incoming freshman of Stanford University. We wish nothing but the best for Celeste and are all super excited to see her reach her goals!

ENVIRONMENT AND THE YOUTH

T

his month’s theme is about Youth and specifically the Youth of Sabah. It is interesting to note that in terms of Environmental awareness, the youth have always taken the lead and are always open to doing what needs to be done to save the environment. Typically, Environmental problems have always been brought about by large polluting industries, businesses who don’t want to change as it would affect their profits or bottom line and adults who can’t make changes for their future even though that also means affecting the lives of generations to come. We have another issue in Asia (Sabah, Malaysia) that complicates environmental issues and environmental awareness; our culture of respecting our elders or people in the positions of authority. Take this story as an example; When a Father of a household litters or does something that is bad for the environment. If his family were to witness the act, it is highly unlikely that anyone else in the family would dare tell the head of the household that he has done something wrong. In Western cultures, the children would say something to their Father and ask him to correct his behavior for the sake of the environment or for the sake of their own futures. Doesn’t this make it harder for changes to happen for our environment? So, where does the cycle of littering end or where does the cycle of environmental awareness start? So, what are the youth to do? How do they make changes with the adults in their lives? Schools seem to be main place

30

where they can get the education on environmental awareness they need and it also seems to be the place where they explore project, ideas and programs that hopefully they will keep with them until they develop families or living environments of their own where they can “practice what they preach”. The youth have social media channels which has limitless potential. Once again, we urge you to Think before you Act. Plan before you move and be responsible for our environment in Sabah and for generations to come.

SO YOU TAKE PROTEIN POWDER? be too much protein to possibly be safe, no scientific evidence has been collected that directly suggest a high protein diet to have any diverse effects on the human body. Do take note that this by no means intend that Carbs and Fats are bad for you. All 3 Macronutrients are essential for your body to function and perform properly. However, a higher Protein intake is required to maximize strength and hypertrophy progress. What protein powders are: Protein supplements are nothing more or less than powderised and purer implementation of that nutrient. Good quality protein supplements aim to prioritise protein quantity as well as quality while minimising overall calories, though this may vary from brand to brand. For example, 180 calories of steak would typically contain 0g of Carbs, 9g of Fats and 24g of Protein. On the other hand, 1 serving of Optimum Nutrition’s Standard Whey Protein contains 3g of Carbs, only 1g of Fat, and 24g of Protein at only 120 calories.

W

henever the subject of working out and nutrition comes up, you can usually set a timer to someone asking the inevitable question: “So you take protein powder?”. Protein supplements are seen by some as the magical solution to progress and by others as something their doctor has told them to avoid for one reason another. In this article, we hope to shed some light by looking at what protein is, what protein supplements are, and what they aren’t. What protein is: Protein is one of the 3 most crucial macronutrients that we derive from food, with the other 2 being carbohydrates and fat. Protein contains amino acids that are the building blocks for muscle tissue. Pairing resistance training with adequate protein intake will result in repair and growth of muscle tissue. How much is an “adequate” amount of protein? This largely varies from person to person based on body composition. According to WHO guidelines, an untrained adult would need 0.8g of protein per KG of body weight to stay healthy. Further studies have shown that this is not enough to support and maximize muscle growth in individuals who weight train. Most common data states that 1.6-2.2g of protein per KG of body weight is a better range for strength and muscle gains. For example, an individual weighing 80 KG should suffice with 128-176g of protein in a day. For those worrying that this might 32

What protein powders aren’t: Protein supplementation is not some secret to success. You can still make progress from deriving protein from whole foods alone, as long as protein quantity taken matches what is needed by your body for your goals. Protein powder was manufactured and invented mainly to be a cheaper, quicker and easier source of protein. There you have it! THE NOT SO SECRET FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

W

hen people talk about fountains of youth, we usually visualise it on beauty. Youth can be represented in both beauty and personality, if you are born with a baby face then extra brownie points to that! Youth comes in sacrifices. If you would like to keep the youthfulness, it takes effort to maintain it to prevent ageing through adulting. Let’s be real, work stress life is much more tiring with everything as our burden gets heavy as we age. Sleeping is among the main miracles of ‘The Fountain of Youth’. By getting enough sleep daily, it helps the body to regenerate and repair cells to support the overall health. Keeping your health a priority is generally the number one rule in most living. This allows us enough rest for thinking, for physical strength and overall mentally stable even if we are faced with daily challenges. Keeping a positive and open yet young mindset helps us in staying youthful. A personality that not only helps maintain a fun and vibrant environment allows you to keep updated and be involved in on-going trends and to communicate well among generations. Remember that fun aunt that travels the world and dressed amazing when she visits every other year on family reunions? That’s youth. Where age does not matter. Along with a positive energy also comes productivity. A good youthful checklist, setting goals right and achieving them keeps the young blood motivated.

34

As cliche as this will be, a no-brainer for youthful body and shine also comes from a healthy diet and exercise. The food we take are part of the fruits of life - apparently greens go a long way in keeping us that youthful body and energy. Try to reduce processed food and junk foods along with sugar, because binge eating them not only destroys your body creating more health issues and sickness, it will also affect growing youths’ in aspects of self-esteem and growing opportunity! Lastly? STAYING HYDRATED! We all know drinking is important regardless because we live in a tropical country with 365 days of blazing sun. Keeping an 8 glass count of water daily is only minimal to keep the body hydrated. By keeping hydration, the bouncy youthful skin and flawless skin is inevitable. Of course it’s not beer we are talking about here, considering Kaamatan is around the corner! The good ol’ H20 Water is the real fountain of youth here! Life is a constant passing day, just remember, youth in regards to everything else still exist even though you are of a mature age! Because nobody is ever too old to still enjoy youthful experiences.

drinking in moderation

A

s May is a month of festivity with Harvest Festival going on, many will be drinking and having fun with family and friends. However, drinking too much alcohol has been linked to an array of oral health problems including oral cancer, tooth decay and tooth erosion. It also increases the chances of accidental trauma or facial injury because of the higher risk of falling or being involved in an accident when people are intoxicated. High alcohol consumption is known to significantly increase the risk of liver disease and this has a ‘knock-on’ effect for dental treatment. Some commonly prescribed drugs and antibiotics can only be used at lower doses by those who have liver disease – potentially prolonging or reducing the success of dental treatment and, or recovery. It’s worth mentioning here that the odd vomiting episode probably won’t cause any permanent damage. But frequent vomiting from medication or illnesses like bulimia can have a very negative effect on your oral health. Dryness, soreness, redness of the mouth and tongue, chronic sore throats and erosion of your enamel. This erosion increases the risk of decay, causing more sensitivity and cavities.

by Hanis Batrisyia Image | Unsplash 36

Over time, frequent vomiting can cause more severe erosion that actually changes the way your upper and lower teeth come together, and you could even end up losing some teeth. If you’re vomiting a lot, or frequently, make sure you see a doctor. According to Dr. Sylvia of Phi Dental, dental health is a yearround commitment, and it’s especially important when you’re not well. It might feel like the last thing you want to do, but when you’re vomiting and exposing your teeth to stomach acid, you need to stay on top of your dental hygiene. Drink lots of water, don’t brush your teeth right away, and make sure you follow up with your doctor if something doesn’t feel quite right. Lastly, Dr. Sylvia advices to celebrate the festive season by drinking alcohol in moderation and Aramaiti to the readers of breeze!

rants & raves

The Future of Gen Z However, with that being said, the freedom of speech comes with responsibility and requires more maturity. Youths nowadays are more outspoken and tend to go all out regardless of consequences, yet they might not know how a pen is always stronger than the sword in some ways. Everything posted on social media, should be put in to thoughts some way to reduce damages. Why am I saying this? Cyber bullying exists in critical levels that leads to suicidal deaths nowadays, which very much could be avoided. This is also caused from peer pressure and popularity idolisation, and judgemental segmentation of what’s cool and what’s not. Everyone wants to be a TikToker and YouTuber now. Because it’s cool? Youths nowadays are also smarter and are great problem solvers. With the current era going through a great process of digitalisation of technology, big tech giants houses massive pools of talents and also more entrepreneurs starting up their own. There is passion and motivation to explore in youths now, as to compared to traditionally where risk taking is taboo - the old school safe bets would have been employment on your commonly known, doctors, engineers and lawyers. Although, they are still the top considered career - but youths are more open to mass communications, designs and content creation which we commonly know of today with social medias like Youtube, TikTok, Facebook and Instagrams.

L

iving in 2022, we are currently living in an era where a few generation co-exists, with the remains of Baby Boomers, coexisting with Gen X, Millennials, and the new and current Gen Z as our current youths and future. The phases and generation gap shows a distinct difference in communication, culture, education as well individual mindset. With Baby Boomers surviving through a non-technology lifestyle, the current can’t live without a second off social media. Period. The future with youths now are definitely more tech savvy, modern and expressive. We get more youths who are open and vocal to speak for the communities through influencers, and social media by utilising the phone. Mass market globally can be communicated with within seconds. With that said, networking and meeting new people around the world are common compared to back in the 90’s. LGBTQ communities are more openly excepted, and cultural differences are much more accepted thoughtfully. Which makes me proud to see acceptance of differences.

38

But the open mindset also brings in higher number of unemployment rate. We also get an amount of youths who are lazy and refuse to work just because they are faced with certain aspects of challenges and difficulty at their workplace. Workplace feedbacks and pressure is unavoidable and if every time a task is thrown yet they feel attacked towards it, it will be a never ending cycle of resignation. So buff up! It will be a waste of talent if you’re unable to handle stress. With the future relying solely onto Gen Zs, I do believe there are greater things that will be achieved. The key is to balance and educate not only academically, but human skills and social services also plays a vital role for the Millennials who are parents to build along the growth of the new generation. A healthy and good upbringing will naturally shape a better future for everyone.

K

ids love toys. But who would have thought a kid will also make millions by reviewing toys. Such is the case for 11 year old Ryan Kaji, who is best known for Ryan’s World (previously known as Ryan ToysReview), a highly popular children’s YouTube channel for children aged 2–6. In fact, it is one of the Top 10 most-subscribed YouTube channels in the United States. Ryan’s World has 32 million subscribers and consistently produces videos with high number of views. Huge Eggs Surprise Toys Challenge video has over 2.0 billion views, making it one of the 60 most-viewed videos on YouTube. In total, the videos in the channel have garnered over 45 billion views.

The channel focuses on Ryan’s everyday life and of course, his unboxing and review of the latest toys. Also appearing in his videos, is his mother Loann Kaji, father Shion Kaji, and twin sisters Emma and Kate. Ryan began making YouTube videos in March 2015 after watching other toy review channels with the supervision and support from his parents. The rest was history. Ryan’s toy reviews blew up in popularity. The reviews influenced the toy industry to a point that they can really affect toy sales. Ryan’s popularity also went beyond YouTube. An app called Tag with Ryan was developed in 2018, an endless runner game targeted towards children, for iOS and Android. In 2019, a 20-episode television series was produced for preschoolers titled Ryan’s Mystery Playdate. On the same year, a video game titled Race with Ryan was released, a racing game featuring Ryan and characters from the Ryan’s World brand. A second Ryan’s World video game was released earlier this year, an action-adventure game titled Ryan’s Rescue Squad. Back to toys, but it wasn’t just all about making money for him. Toys that were reviewed were donated away to friends and family, and also a lot of them away to charity.

With such a high number of views for his videos, obviously Ryan was bound to make lots of money. He has been making millions for the past 6 years. In 2019, at the age of 8 years old, he was listed as the highest-paid YouTuber, earning $26 million from his videos and product line.

restaurant review

restoran nasi mandi: malay-arab fusion

S

ituated at Kingfisher Kota Kinabalu is a restaurant serving delicious arabic-malay fusion cuisine called Restoran Nasi Mandi.

their signature Nasi Mandi sauce was delicious! All nasi mandi orders come with pickled cucumber & tomato, and hot soup on the side.

Inspired by Mandi rice, a very well known traditional rice dish originating from the Hadhramaut region. What’s unique about Restoran Nasi Mandi according to the founders, Malik and Hartini, is that the dishes at Restoran Nasi Mandi are modified to suit the taste palette of local sabahans, something that we can enjoy eating every day.

The next dish we tried was their famous Lamb Shank Nasi Mandi, and wow, we were surprised with the large portion that it came with, especially since it is priced so affordably. The meat from the lamb shank was tender and soft, and you could really taste the flavours of the black pepper sauce being absorbed by the meat. You can also opt for their Lamb Shoulder Nasi Mandi. Despite the lamb shoulder being more chewy compared to the lamb shank, both meat dishes were cooked to tender perfection.

And we were lucky enough to have had a taste of their featured dishes from their menu. Among the dishes that we tried were the Nasi Mandi Ketam Lembut, Lamb Shank, Lamb Stew, Sup Tulang, Lamb Shoulder, Mee Udang Galah, and their Ayam Arab. Before we talk about the food, I’d like to give a hats off to their warm customer service. As you take a step in, paying attention to little details, you’ll hear a friendly “WELCOME!!” greeting from the servers wearing brown-coloured uniforms at Restoran Nasi Mandi, which we were told is one of their usual practices there. Now back to food. Being called Restoran Nasi Mandi, of course we would sample their Mandi rice first. Naturally, the first dish we had was their Ayam Arab Nasi Mandi. What’s special about this dish is that it uses the same spices that make up their signature mandi rice. Their nasi mandi has a hint of smoky and tangy flavour, and it is spiced just nice without overpowering the side dishes it is served with. The chicken was baked crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and eating it with 48

I would say the same for their lamb stew. It’s soft, fall-apart tender, flavourful, and combined with a rich velvety lamb broth - certainly a dish I would eat, especially on a cold rainy day.

Collective opinion, the best dish we tried at Restoran Nasi Mandi was their Nasi Mandi Ketam Lembut (soft shell crab). Their soft shell crab was crispy yet so soft. Served with cucumber, fried tempeh, crackers, eggplant, and their special Nasi Mandi tomato-based sambal, we couldn’t get enough of it! Another dish that we really loved was their Sup Tulang (beef bone soup). Just from the appearance of it, it definitely looked healthy! The clear broth had no oil layer on top, it’s fresh (even the celery in the broth was still crunchy!) and soothing that you could taste the tangy yet savoury flavours of ingredients in the dish. What’s unique about Restoran Nasi Mandi’s sup tulang is that the broth is vegetable-based, and the beef combined with freshly squeezed lime is what elevates their Sup Tulang as a whole. Next up is their Mee Udang Galah (Noodles served with lobster). Judging from the appearance of it, it definitely looks the most different from their menu. If you’re familiar with Mee Basah Sabah, their Mee Udang Galah is somewhat like an elevated version of it. The broth tastes hearty and savoury. Definitely a must-try if you’re a fan of noodles!
