APRIL 2024

rom the intricately woven tapestry of Linangkit to the reverberating chime of Kulintangan ensemble, Sabah has been a testament to the dynamic blend of indigenous cultures that retain distinctive ethnic origins yet coexist harmoniously. Nevertheless, there has been considerable trepidation amongst the native communities that the present-day generation might not be as adept at learning the archaic traditions and esoteric knowledge of our ancestors. There have been a lot of efforts launched to safeguard our heritage but changing times demands for changing method and social enterprise, a rising business trend, might be one of the answers to our conundrum.

According to Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (SCENIC), there are approximately 80 social enterprises in Sabah. Since the number will be expected to grow, there is a tremendous potential for living heritage to serve as a niche market for local social enterprises. Sabah Chief Minister, when gracing the Bajau-Samah festival in February 2024, urged Sabahans to espouse their respective indigenous cultures by developing ethnic-imbued merchandise that can subsequently boost our tourism while keeping our heritage intact. This heralded the role of Sabah fledgling entrepreneurs in touting products which boast our tangible artefacts and intangible traditions.

University of Hertfordshire’s Heritage Hub posits that the combination of heritage and social enterprise can economically rejuvenate rural and suburban areas by capitalizing on the cultures unique to these localities. Nur Hanisah Omar Hashim, a 19-year-old Early Childhood Education student, founded Mearpet which upcycles fabric waste into folktale puppet characters. Her aim is to revive legendary stories like Tambuakar, a mythical dragon, that was believed to have lived beneath the Padas River which flows through several districts in the southwestern Sabah.

Emelly Teo, a prospective graduate of Cosmetology programme, used her makeup artistry skills when recording a theatre performance where she portrayed a siren-like character known as Galap. It is often told to caution children from playing near riverbanks in Kota Belud. Evidently, Sabah folklore proves to be a trove of possible fiction franchises which our homegrown businesses can capitalize on.

Sabah Social Entrepreneurs & Ecodevelopment (SEED) boasts an array of products that celebrate ethnic craftmanship and local artisans which have become a launchpad for startups that empower indigenous communities. Ervin Petrus, a Business Management graduate from Keningau Vocational College, has started a business selling ecofriendly bags embroidered with Dusun motifs and the idea earned him and his partner a Pitch Borneo grant worth of RM 20,000. His goal is not just to generate profit but also to popularize tribal designs among locals and tourists.

Ervin and his business partner, Faustin, was awarded with a grant for their product that dignified ethnic motif.

As we shift into ventures that leverage the Sabah indigenous vein, our social enterprises will be in the vanguard of redefining the triple bottom life of people, planet and profit by incorporating heritage conservation into it.

Intrepid Travel’s Strategic Visit to Malaysia:

Unveiling Future

Tourism Growth Plans

Darrell Wade, a visionary backpacker, cofounded Intrepid Travel with Geoff ‘Manch’ Manchester in 1989, driven by a desire to offer low-impact travel experiences that connect travelers with communities.

Darrell, now a prominent figure in the travel industry, champions sustainability and serves as Chair of the Intrepid Foundation.

Having grown up in Victoria, Australia, Darrell’s passion for travel led him to start a travel company after epic adventures in Southeast Asia and Africa. Despite lacking prior experience in the travel industry, Darrell and Manch founded Intrepid Travel with a focus on responsible practices and community impact, incorporating charitable donations from the company’s inception.

Today, Intrepid Travel is the world’s largest adventure travel company, operating globally with a workforce of over 3,000 and a not-for-profit foundation that has raised millions for charitable causes worldwide.

Darrell believes that sustainable travel will continue to flourish, benefiting local communities and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility within the industry.

Darrell Wade, Chair and Co-Founder of Intrepid Travel, recently visited Malaysia to unveil the company’s 2030 Strategy for enhancing the country’s tourism sector. Accompanied by key executives from Australia, Mr. Wade engaged with internal teams and stakeholders across Intrepid’s 27 country offices.

In Malaysia, Intrepid employs 13 professionals and collaborates with 38 local trip leaders, facilitating nine sustainable travel experiences. They hosted 3,912 conscious travelers in 2023, emphasizing responsible tourism practices.

Felice Tseu, General Manager of Intrepid Travel Malaysia, highlighted Mr. Wade’s visit as a commitment to bolstering Malaysia’s tourism economy and fostering community philanthropy. The 2030 Strategy aims to double the customer base to 600,000 and achieve a revenue surge to AUD $1.3 billion, with 1% earmarked for Purpose initiatives. Intrepid plans vertical expansion into accommodations and strengthening its presence in key markets like Malaysia.

Intrepid’s not-for-profit arm, the Intrepid Foundation, has raised over $15.5 million globally since 2002. In Malaysia, it collaborates with the Responsible Elephant Conservation Trust (RESpect) to mitigate human-elephant conflicts and protect the pygmy elephant population in Kinabatangan.

Mr. Alexander Yee, Chairman of RESPECT, emphasized their role in positive change for Sabah’s human-elephant dynamics. For Intrepid, expanding business operations is linked to fostering positive socio-economic impacts through responsible tourism.

WHAT IS INTREPID TRAVEL?

In 1988, Darrell and Manch, two adventurous mates from Melbourne, turned their love for travel into a business, founding Intrepid Travel. Inspired by their own adventures in Africa and fueled by a desire to offer unique travel experiences, they embarked on a journey that would span over three decades and redefine the way people explore the world.

Intrepid Travel has grown from a small venture to a global leader in responsible and ethical travel. With over 1,000 itineraries across seven continents, the company employs more than 1,500 staff and leaders, embodying the spirit of adventure while maintaining a commitment to positive change.

As a B Corporation, Intrepid is dedicated to sustainable practices, supporting local communities, and mitigating its environmental impact. From fostering gender equality in the travel industry to championing responsible tourism and climate action, Intrepid Travel continues to shape the future of travel with its unique blend of adventure, responsibility, and inclusivity.

Sabah, is a gem of natural wonders that lies in the heart of Borneo. At the forefront of showcasing this paradise to the world is the Sabah Tourism Board(STB), an agency dedicated to propelling Sabah into the spotlight as a premier destination for culture, adventure, and nature (CAN).

EMCEE’R: SABAHAN HIP-HOP BAND THAT DELIVERING MUSIC IN THE DUSUN LANGUAGE

MUSIC

Anew generation of hip-hop is on the rise from the Land Below the Wind. Introducing Emcee’r, a Sabahan and hip-hop band that debuted in 2023, delivering music in the Dusun language. The name came from their original group band ‘MicRosak’ with the acronym MCR. The group consists of seven members, each with a background and interest in the underground hip-hop scene. Those members are Kerakal, MoZAMS, Barou, YrNizz, TROPHY, KOEL and Kalses.

Kerakal, also famously known as Aidyl Hr, has been a content creator on YouTube and TikTok since 2015, some of which involves him producing music as an underground rapper. MoZAMS is one of the members of Emcee’r who wanted to pursue his dream to make music, in order to make his family and crew proud. Barou is an upcoming Rungus Rapper in Sabah who got recruited into the group for his unique vocal tone and his promising talent. YrNizz, who’s been in the scene since 2021, is the youngest and only female rapper in the group. TROPHY R.A.K started as a rapper in the year 2020, with multiple songs already on YouTube and Spotify. KOEL is a Sabahan singersongwriter, composer, and record producer who is known for his collaboration with Lexnour on “Better Me”, which made him the first Sabahan Dusun Rapper with an official collaboration with international artists. Kalses has been a rapper since 2020 and is also a model and actor. His latest short film “Aku, Ayah dan Muzik” can be found on YouTube.

In one fateful get-together, the members would meet up with each other and share their interest in the music industry. It was then that they decided to create Emcee’r as a group for them to go

mainstream, debuting in 2023 with their first single, ‘Kalangadan’. Inspired by one of their members, KOEL, for making music in the Dusun language, the group felt compelled to write and make music in the Dusun language with a few elements and strengths that KOEL shared with his group. Since the members themselves are also Dusun, they use this opportunity to share their culture through their music.

Even though they work during the usual working hours, they get together during the weekends to brainstorm on their next musical project. Any idea that pops up randomly, they immediately note it down, especially if the situation is relatable to everybody. It’s especially a normal occurrence this month because of the upcoming Harvest Festival.

Emcee’r is known for their uplifting music with a mixture of genres such as pop and hip-hop, but with Dusun as the main language. With the genres they are going for, they intend to share the beauty of the Dusun language with the younger generations, showing them that even an ethnic language can vibe with modern music.

Their new song “Kopisanangan” and its music video has been released on YouTube. ‘Kopisanangan’ is a form of greeting in the Dusun language that means ‘Hello’. The song is mixed with other languages, which are English, Malay, and Rungus, each with different members delivering different verses unique to their own style. The release of the music video in May is a commemoration of the Kaamatan Harvest Festival.

Their music can be streamed on YouTube and Spotify under the name EMCEE’R. Look forward to their new song “Kopisanangan” which can be streamed from Spotify and YouTube!

What’s better than roller skates? An electric roller skate. Specifically, the electric roller skates developed by Airtrick. Airtrick is a brand that developed the world’s first ever electric roller skates that are lightweight in feel, the Airtrick E-Skates. An electric roller skate is exactly what it sounds like—a roller skate capable of moving on its own with minimal effort compared to the one we are familiar with.

The Airtrick E-Skates A1 Ultra is the highlight for this brand, offering maximum experience to cruise automatically. Other than the superior performance, this package comes with a set of decals for the frames and installed LED wheels, perfect for those who want to skate with style. The skates come with flexible and adjustable silicone straps to put them on and off instantly, all while adapting to the size of your shoe. The frame it is built upon is a strong, one-piece aluminum frame capable of supporting the impact from jumping. As for the shapes, the skates are designed to be ambidextrous, which means you don’t have to worry about confusing the left and right when putting them on. What makes it electronic is the small but powerful 180W x 2 motors, which can be remote controlled with the remote the skates come with. The remote offers four speed modes, especially for those who are feeling adventurous, a brake, and a reverse function.

Activating the skates is as simple as rotating each skate’s wheel and listening for the cue upon activation. Upon activation, the skates can go up to 20 miles per hour, so you don’t have to worry about going too fast. The abrasion-resistant wheels are smooth over rough surfaces, such as asphalt and concrete flooring. Thanks to that and its traditional four-wheel design,

the maneuverability that it offers to cross steps or transition to walking is quick and easy. But what if you just want to come to a stop entirely? The skate has two brake functions for safety purposes: one is a physical stopper at the back end of the skates, and the other is a remote control. However, it needs to be said that both the skates and the remote control require charging for a few hours before you can take them for a cruise.

While the E-Skates provide outdoor enthusiasts with a new level of roller skating, users definitely still have to be mindful of their surroundings. You wouldn’t want to bump into people while wearing electric roller skates, would you?

AUTOMOTIVE THE WINSOME RUNABOUT

The Winsome Runabout Vehicle is an entry level model for those who want to experience what it’s like to daily drive an SUV. Wait, what am I talking about you say? Well, that’s what Honda’s WR-V stands for! If you’re confused, winsome means “delightful” or “cheerful”. So, is the Honda WR-V a delightful car to drive? Read on to find out.

Being an entry level compact SUV, you could see where Honda tried to cut costs, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The dashpanel is plastic with a leather texture to it, the same goes with most of the door panel. However, they did put some kind of leather (or faux leather) on the components that matter most. For example, on the armrests and the steering wheel. The leather on the seats also makes for a very comfortable drive and ride.

Speaking of the drive, what immediately caught my attention is how light the steering wheel feels. It feels agile and easy to handle, especially for the city streets. It also performs great for daily driving purposes as well. The acceleration is smooth and picks up power as soon as you step on the pedal. It also has a sport mode, if you want more control on your gear shifting with the paddle shifters.

Lastly, the WR-V offered a very comfortable ride. As mentioned, the seats are nice and comfy. But one thing that I didn’t notice were the bumps, which goes to show how smooth the ride of the

WR-V is. On another note, almost every control you’ll need is at your fingertips on the steering wheel. Apart from the radio controls, there were a myriad of other buttons that control other functions of the car, but unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to test them out.

Speaking of which, one function I really liked was the blind spot camera on the passanger-side mirror. It shows real time footage of your blindspot, so you don’t have to turn your head. Apart from that, for a compact SUV, it is pretty spacious, from the front to the back, and even the trunk.

So that was my brief experience with the WR-V. I liked a lot of aspects of the car. If you don’t mind the lower ride for what’s supposed to be your gateway to an SUV, this is the perfect car for a small family.

DESTINATION NOSTALGIA

Exploring Sabah’s colonial township and railroad heritage at Membakut town in Sabah is definitely a nostalgic memorable experience. The train still passes by Membakut town every day, just like it did a century ago.

Amidst the rising tide of featureless cement buildings in Sabah, one can’t help but appreciate the nostalgic charm of the preWorld War II and post-war wooden shophouses in Membakut town. These colonial relics, meticulously preserved on the West Coast, stand as enduring testaments to Sabah’s past. Constructed during the British colonial era, these shophouses line up parallel to the railway, once vital arteries for transporting agricultural goods along the west coast route to the port of Jesselton, now known as Kota Kinabalu City (KK in short).

Pre-War Shophouses

Dating back to the 1930s North Borneo era, two wooden shophouses in Membakut serve as captivating relics of the past, offering a window into the bustling railway station and vibrant

town life of yesteryears. Positioned adjacent to these pre-war structures stands a post-war shophouse, constructed in the early 1950s, along with several other century-old buildings, all clustered within a mere 200-metre radius.

Membakut, situated along the 134-kilometre railway line, was a vital stop on the North Borneo railway (now Sabah State Railway) during its peak. The ornate bargeboards adorning Membakut’s wooden shophouses bear testimony to the town’s erstwhile prosperity. These architectural details, meticulously crafted, reflect a bygone era when the railway was at the heart of the township’s economy. Remarkably, the railway still operates today as Borneo’s sole rail network.

On the opposite side of the train tracks lie a row of post-war shophouses. Adjacent to these stands Pei Yin Primary School, another colonial gem. Facing the school sits a small abandoned house known as the ‘Blue House.’

Pei Yin Primary School

The striking red and white façade of Pei Yin Primary School bears distinctive features of colonial architecture. Pei Yin Primary School is believed to have been built between the 1910s – 1930s, so it can be over 100 years old.

The Blue House

Directly opposite Pei Yin Primary School stands an abandoned pre-WWII residence affectionately known as ‘the Blue House.’ Likely a colonial dwelling, this building likely served as living quarters for past teachers.

How to Get There?

Membakut is located in the Papar District, approximately 80 kilometers (about one and a half hour drive) south of Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah. The town’s old shophouses and buildings are situated in the old township (Pekan Lama). Alternatively, you can opt for a scenic train journey from Tanjung Aru train station to Membakut.

PRESERVING PARADISE: THE INTREPID FOUNDATION’S MISSION TO SAVE BORNEO’S PYGMY ELEPHANTS

n Borneo’s lush landscapes lies a hidden treasure—its endangered pygmy elephants. Threatened by habitat loss and human encroachment, these gentle giants face an uncertain future. However, amidst these challenges, a beacon of hope shines bright: the partnership between the Intrepid Foundation and RESPect, the RESPonsible Elephant Conservation Trust in Malaysia.

The Intrepid Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the world’s largest adventure travel company, is on a mission to create positive change through travel, community, and connection. With a commitment to responsible tourism, the Foundation channels its resources towards impactful projects worldwide. One such project is the preservation of Borneo’s iconic pygmy elephants.

Since its inception in 2002, the Intrepid Foundation has donated over $15.5 million to more than 160 local organisations globally. In Malaysia, its alliance with RESPect focuses on safeguarding the pygmy elephants, whose survival is intertwined with the region’s rich biodiversity.

The Borneo pygmy elephant, known for its smaller size and endearing demeanor, faces numerous threats. Habitat fragmentation due to human activities has disrupted their traditional migration routes, leading to conflicts with villagers and endangering their lives. Illegal snares set for smaller animals pose further risks, with an estimated 20% of elephants in Sabah’s Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary being injured by these traps.

RESPect’s approach is multi-faceted, addressing both the immediate dangers and long-term conservation needs. By creating and managing large-scale habitats in collaboration with local communities, they provide safe spaces for the elephants to thrive. One such initiative is the partnership with Nasalis Larvatus Tours, dedicating half of its land in Kinabatangan to planting elephant grass and protecting critical habitats.

For travelers venturing into Sabah’s wild landscapes, encountering these majestic creatures is often a highlight of their journey. Intrepid’s commitment to responsible tourism ensures that these experiences contribute to conservation efforts, rather than harming the delicate ecosystem.

Through their partnership, Intrepid and RESPect exemplify the power of global-local collaborations in conservation. By fostering sustainable practices and community engagement, they pave the way for a future where Borneo’s pygmy elephants can roam freely in their natural paradise, ensuring that generations to come can marvel at these magnificent creatures.

FITNESS

HAVE FUN AND DRINK RESPONSIBLY (IF YOU DO)

Pesta Kaamatan in Sabah celebrates the harvest season, uniting communities through traditional rituals, music, and dance. Held annually in May, it honors the Kadazan-Dusun indigenous culture, showcasing cultural performances like the Sumazau dance and traditional sports like the bamboo pole dance. The festival fosters cultural pride and strengthens bonds among Sabah’s diverse ethnic groups.

There are different forms of the celebrations but one of the ways people show their merriment is through alcohol consumption during this event. It’s important to remind ourselves to consume alcohol responsibly as alcohol has some effects on your health and fitness.

Alcohol can hinder fitness progress by disrupting sleep patterns, reducing muscle protein synthesis, and impairing nutrient absorption. It dehydrates the body, affecting performance and

recovery. Excessive consumption can lead to weight gain due to empty calories and decreased motivation for exercise. Overall, limiting alcohol intake is essential for maintaining optimal fitness levels and reaching fitness goals.

To drink alcohol responsibly while maintaining fitness, consider these three tips:

1. Moderation is key:

Limit your alcohol intake to moderate levels, which is generally defined as up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. Avoid binge drinking sessions, as they can quickly derail fitness goals and hinder recovery. Opt for lower-alcohol beverages or alternate between alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks to pace yourself and stay within recommended limits.

2. Plan ahead and hydrate:

Before consuming alcohol, ensure you’re well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Alternate each alcoholic beverage with a glass of water to stay hydrated and minimize the dehydrating effects of alcohol. Planning ahead also involves considering the timing of your drinks in relation to your workouts. Avoid drinking heavily before or after intense exercise sessions, as it can impair performance and recovery.

3. Choose wisely and watch portions:

Opt for lighter alcoholic beverages like wine, light beer, or spirits mixed with low-calorie mixers to reduce calorie intake. Be mindful of portion sizes, and avoid oversized drinks or continuously refilling your glass. Pay attention to the alcohol content of your drinks and aim to consume them slowly to savor the flavor and better gauge your body’s response. Ultimately, being mindful of your alcohol consumption and its impact on your fitness goals is crucial for maintaining a healthy balance between indulgence and wellness.

Keep those tips in mind when you are having fun during the festival. Drink responsibly (if you do) and have fun!

EXPLORING

DENTAL BABY’S FIRST TEETH

Babies’ first teeth, typically appearing between 6 and 12 months of age, mark an essential milestone in their growth. Teething, the process of teeth erupting through the gums, often brings along common symptoms like increased drooling, irritability, and swollen gums. Understanding these signs can help parents navigate this phase with more ease and comfort for both the baby and themselves.

Tooth development follows a relatively predictable pattern, starting with the lower front teeth and progressing to the upper front teeth and molars. While these primary teeth are temporary, they play a crucial role in chewing, speech development, and creating space for permanent teeth later on. Therefore, it’s important to start good oral hygiene habits early by gently wiping the gums with a clean cloth even before teeth emerge and then transitioning to a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste once teeth appear.

Diet and nutrition also play a significant role in oral health. Limiting sugary foods and drinks helps prevent tooth decay, while a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and dairy

products supports healthy tooth development. Early dental care is recommended, with the first dental visit advised by age 1 or within six months of the first tooth eruption. This early visit allows dentists to monitor tooth development, provide guidance on oral care practices, and address any concerns parents may have.

During the teething phase, parents may explore various teething remedies such as teething rings or chilled washcloths to help soothe their baby’s discomfort. However, it’s crucial to consult healthcare professionals before using any teething remedies to ensure they are safe and appropriate for the baby’s age and development stage.

Parents should also be vigilant for signs of tooth decay, such as discoloration, sensitivity, or bad breath, and prioritise regular dental check-ups to maintain optimal oral health. By incorporating these practices into their routine, parents can promote healthy smiles and set a strong foundation for their child’s lifelong oral health and well-being.

RANTS & RAVES

Kaamatan season is here and my pessimist brain is having a field day with all the things I’ve lost appreciation for, to say the least, through the years with the celebrations. However, I’m resisting the urge to rant on and on about things that honestly bother just me (and maybe a few other people). So, I want to take a positive step and rave about the celebrations instead.

First, let’s look to the past for a bit. I’m sure most of us celebrating Kaamatan have fond memories of spending time with family and friends. Whether dancing the sumazau, beating the gongs, or simply enjoying the great company around you, there’s sure to be some core memory you cherish most about Kaamatan. For me, I fondly remember my late father taking me to the KDCA by bus. And instead of going inside the crowded hall, we walked around the various traditional houses. I specifically remember trying a dish that I haven’t eaten since (I think it was fried sago or sago pancake).

Then there’s the present. I appreciate spending time with the family, gathering around the table and listening to the banther. Maybe a few drinks here and there (drink responsibly people). I also appreciate the fun and games my family would hold, even though I’m more of an onlooker. Plus, when I do get the chance to visit KDCA, I love taking my camera with me and just

document the moments and people enjoying the celebrations. The colourful and joyful atmosphere brings a smile to my face, especially when spending the day with my loved ones.

Lastly, I look forward to spending Kaamatan with my son. Sharing and learning about the tradition and stories behind Kaamatan is what I’ve loved growing up, and I want my son to have the same enthusiasm too. I’m sure I’m not alone in this. No matter what celebrations you celebrate, I’m sure passing it down to the next generation to appreciate and enjoy is something to look forward to.

Honestly, I had a rant prepared for Kaamatan, and it was a harsh one too. But after some reflection, I decided “why not spread some positivity instead?” We all need some positive vibes this Kaamatan season.

BEAUTY

The Role of Hydration During this Festive Season

Photographer:

As the harvest festival season approaches, with its joyous gatherings and indulgent feasts, it’s easy to get caught up in the celebrations and forget about the importance of staying hydrated. However, maintaining adequate hydration is crucial, not only for our overall well-being but also for enjoying the festivities to the fullest.

During this time, many of us tend to consume more alcoholic beverages, sugary treats, and salty snacks than usual. These can contribute to dehydration as they can increase urine output and lead to electrolyte imbalances. Furthermore, the hectic nature of festive preparations and social events may cause us to overlook our hydration needs.

Here are a few reasons why staying hydrated is essential during the festive season:

1. Optimal Functioning: Proper hydration is vital for the body to function optimally. Water is involved in nearly every bodily function, including digestion, circulation, and temperature regulation. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and decreased cognitive function, which can put a damper on the festivities.

2. Alcohol and Hydration: Alcoholic beverages are often consumed in abundance during celebrations. However, alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it increases urine production and can lead to dehydration if not accompanied by adequate water intake. It’s essential to alternate between alcoholic drinks and water to stay hydrated and minimize the effects of alcohol on the body.

3. Healthy Digestion: Indulging in rich, heavy foods is a common aspect of festive celebrations. Drinking enough water helps support healthy digestion by aiding in the breakdown of food and the absorption of nutrients. It can also prevent constipation, a common issue when dietary habits change during the festive season.

4. Energy Levels: Dehydration can leave you feeling tired and lethargic, making it challenging to fully participate in festivities and enjoy time with loved ones. Drinking enough water helps maintain energy levels and keeps you feeling refreshed and alert throughout the celebrations.

5. Skin Health: Hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health and appearance. Dehydration can leave the skin dry, dull, and prone to breakouts. By staying hydrated, you can keep your skin looking radiant and glowing, enhancing your festive look.

To ensure you stay hydrated during the festive season, make a conscious effort to drink water regularly throughout the day. Carry a water bottle with you to events and alternate between alcoholic beverages and water. Additionally, incorporate hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables into your festive meals and snacks.

Founded by Deidre DonDie, MamaBear is a prominent food & beverage business in the local modern pop-up market and home delivery business scene. The name MamaBear was inspired by DonDie’s favourite vlogger Judylife, who loves to cook lumpia for her kids and fondly calls them baby bears. MamaBear itself was founded when DonDie’s youngest sister just so happened to have brought lumpia to a family gathering and was asked if orders can be made for them. The first order was made and the rest was history.

So lumpia became the highlight for MamaBear. Their main menu consists of their delicious Chicky Lumpia, a spring roll, marinated chicken meat inside, wrapped with crispy popiah wrapper served raw and cooked. Other than that, they also have various pastries to choose from. For example, Yonde-Yonde Banjir (Onde-Onde), Kuih Angkuh, Kuih Lapis, Tausa Piang, Tuna Mayo Puff, Sardine Puff, Korean Garlic Cheese Bun and many more!

MamaBear requires at least 3-5 days in advance to accept orders. Range of delivery is within Kota Kinabalu (KK) only. Business is getting better nowadays and when the time comes, MamaBear is looking forward to having its own outlet. Until then, enjoy trying out their menu at their pop-up booth or from home order.

Dondie hopes she can share her journey one day to inspire all women out there to never stop achieving their dreams.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

M2 KITCHEN: A JACK OF ALL TRADES IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE

On the fringes of the city of Donggongon lies a quaint spot that’s ready for any event. This charming restaurant not only offers great food and drinks, but also a very welcoming venue for your celebrations. M2 Kitchen is certainly a jack of all trades in more ways than one. Read on to find out why M2 Kitchen should be on your list of restaurants to visit.

M2 Kitchen is easy to spot when you drive from Donggongon. Just past the post office, you’ll notice a building with a mural of John Lennon painted on its wall. That is M2 Kitchen. Once you’ve parked, you immediately see their outdoor bar and stage for karaoke, along with the seating arrangements. Entering the main dining area, you’re greeted with a charming space suited for the whole family. This is also the main space you could book for your special occasions such as small weddings, engagement parties, and even meetings. And if you need more space, you can count on the outdoor space to provide ample space for your guests.

With all that said, let’s talk about the food. M2 Kitchen serves a variety of food types. Be it traditional, seafood, pizza, and even fusion, you can bet M2 Kitchen can satisfy almost all your cravings.

The first dish we tried out was their Set Kampung, which is their take on the Sabahan classic rice with a side of Losun (chives) and bosungan (mackerel). The set also comes with half a salted egg, bambangan (pickled wild mango), and tuhau (pickled wild ginger). M2 Kitchen dos this classic justice as all the flavours from the different sides work wonderfully together. I do have to say though, the bosungan is battered in a way that makes it super crispy while maintaining the savoury flavours of the fish, differentiating it from other renditions of this dish.

Next is the Wantan Ho, a mainstay in most kitchens around Penampang. It’s a noodle soup dish, in this case kuey teow. Instead of the typical clear soup though, Wantan Ho will have a thicker gravy-like soup. I simply love how the soup by M2 Kitchen isn’t too salty when compared to some other renditions of the dish. Plus, they also incorporate seafood in their Wantan Ho along with some leafy greens for some crunch in your bite. The seafood is very fresh, you could even say it’s so fresh I could still sense the sea from the squid and prawns.

Speaking of seafood, M2 Kitchen recently introduced Shellout to the menu that’s perfect for the whole family to feast on. Consisting of crab, prawns, and squid, with a side of corn, the Shellout dish hits the spot for any seafood lovers out there. Just like the seafood in the Wantan Ho, the offerings on this dish are also very fresh. Slathered in a tom yam like gravy, each flavour of the seafood was enhanced with a hint of sourness and spice. But fret not if you can’t eat spicy food, as this isn’t a dish I’d call “spicy” in any way.

One unique dish that isn’t seen often, even in Sabah, is the Bambangan Pizza. I know, bambangan on pizza? Well, just like pineapple on pizza, which will stir up conversation, bambangan on pizza also works well because of the slightly sweet and sour flavour. Paired with a savoury tomato base and cheesy topping, you’ve got a recipe for a very unique fusion of western and local flavours in your hands. Not to mention, the crust baked perfectly as well, not too thin and not too thick.

To round it all up is the Chicken Burger, a tall and juicy piece of art if I do say so myself. You get an egg that tops the thick and juicy chicken patty, along with a serving of veggies and a nice dollop of cheese sauce. The burger isn’t as intimidating as it looks, as you could get every bit of flavour with just one bite. I especially like the side of fries M2 Kitchen provided with the burger, because they were slightly crispy on the outside yet soft on the outside. Not many restaurants and cafes make as nice of fries as these, including the big names.
