October 2021 THE LUMA HOTEL UNVEILS COLLABORATION WITH MJ BY MUS Kota Kinabalu, October 2021 - The LUMA Hotel has formed a collaboration with local boutique company Mj by MUS to design scarfs for its hotel employees as a compliment to their uniforms. The hotel employees’ scarfs are inspired from the traditional headgear (sigal) commonly worn by the Rungus people during official ceremonies or cultural activities. Decorated with embroidery, the motifs found on the sigal are inspired by flora and fauna. The neutral colours selected for the scarfs match the hotel’s interior design elements, which is mostly inspired by Sabah’s beautiful nature. The hotel’s uniforms, which consist of a green blouse and khaki pants are the perfect representation of Sabah’s tropical rainforest. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/ thelumahotel THE ART ATTIC: ARTS, CRAFTS AND CAFE Kota Kinabalu, 1 October 2021 - The Art Attic has finally officially opened in Kota Kinabalu. Report

SABAH BASED TALEE STUDIO FEATURED AT LONDON CRAFT WEEK Talee Studio’s Knota Project was featured at last month’s London Craft Week’s ‘A Luxury Craft Journey Across Southeast Asia' exhibition. Held in London, England; the exhibition was made possible thanks to the organiser Dia Guild. London Craft Week brings together over 250 established and emerging makers, designers, brands and galleries from around the world. Talee Studio is a jewellery house brand which was founded by Sabahan Lorraine Lee and specialises in handmade knot design works that are designed and handcrafted right here in Sabah. TALEE (TAH-lee), deriving from the Malay word “tali,” meaning ‘rope’, symbolises strength, hope, and the invaluable memories that tie us to the people around us. More than just a tassel earring, the concept of TALEE was born out of a personal journey Lorraine shared with her father that led them to tying nautical knots over the last 10 years. For the exhibition, Talee Studio’s Knota Project was displayed under Sculpture and Textile Making category. The term “Knota” is derived from the word “Nota”, a Malay word that translates into “notes”. This Knota Project was made to connect special moments and memories from individuals all around the world. Sharing one significant, special moment of yours creates something bigger together as a community that brings meaning and life into this installation piece. Those who are in Kota Kinabalu will also be able to view the Knota Project at the upcoming Jesselton Artisan Market at SICC (Sabah International Convention Centre on 4-5 December 2021. Head over to www.taleestudio.com/pages/knota-project and find out how you can be part of the project.

TECH

Giving back to those who need it Givers can offer help by donating food and other basic necessities to anyone who is in need near them. Recipients are able to ask and connect with givers for donations. The app also offers a service that helps recipients find the closest food banks in their area, constantly updating the database when new ones pop up. The UI (User Interface) offers a slick and clean look, giving users easy and simple access to its features. So, how do you connect with each other? Well, the app directly links your contact number through WhatsApp. Synxsoft has taken extra care to make sure the privacy of both givers and recipients are safe when using the app. They ensure that the user data isn't shared to anyone unnecessarily. However, users can send in complaints for reports in case there is confusion or misuse of the information. Synxsoft is constantly improving the app to make the act of giving a much simpler and seamless process. Look forward to better features to come in the future. If you’re keen on having a go at the GivingApp, it’s available to download on the Google Play Store.

I

t hasn’t been said enough. Even before the pandemic, there are those who are desperately in need of help. It’s not that help isn’t coming their way, it’s just that there are unfortunately too many for associations and organisations to lend a helping hand. There are also those of us who want to help but don’t know who or where to offer it. This is where an application like the GivingApp comes in. Developed by local developer Synxsoft, the GivingApp is an application that helps put a smile on the faces of people who are in need of help. In their own words, it connects kind individuals like you to the needy who are closest to you. That’s not all, you can either register as a giver or a recipient.

destination

under the clouds

D

estinations don’t always have to be somewhere with a scenic view to enjoy. What’s most important is the feeling of awe while being comfortable with your surroundings. Sometimes, discovering a hidden space is just what it takes to invoke that feeling. Under The Clouds is what invoked that feeling for me and I’m sure it’ll do the same for everyone, especially those of you who are into the streetwear scene. Under The Clouds is a streetwear slash pop culture memorabilia shop. It’s located on the 13th floor of Bay21 Condominium. Getting off the elevator and seeing the outside, you really don’t expect anything out of the ordinary. Open the door, you’ll be greeted by a huge graffiti of their logo on your left, while a shelf of sneakers sits to your right. It isn’t particularly small by any means, but it does have a very homey vibe to it, making you feel at home as soon as you step foot in it.

Personally, the experience of being in Under The Clouds’ space is enough to bring joy to my heart. Even though not everything you see is for sale, there are a few interesting items that not only make good decorations but amazing conversation pieces as well. Case in point, coffee table books that feature info on the most sought after sneakers that came out in a certain period. It also helps to talk to the owner who is very knowledgeable in the items he’s selling. In fact, most of the things you see used to be part of his collection. It’s safe to say he knows what he’s talking about. So, whether you’re into streetwear or not, it's a very interesting experience seeing all the items featured in the shop. It’s a great place to bring friends and spark up a conversation with all the memorabilia around you.

As mentioned of what type of shop Under The Clouds is, you can find a lot of street wear brands and items ranging from Supreme shirts, Jordan sneakers, and even merchandise by Fragment and Bape. Apart from the streetwear related items, you can also find vinyl records and CDs from popular musical artists of the past. If not for the music quality you’ll get from this past media, you’ll definitely get a kick from nostalgia seeing these being featured. You can also find figures from the Star Wars franchise, The Simpsons, and even from the famous artist Kaws.

Tame centre

S

ustainability, awareness, and education is usually included in the plans for a new building but was not always considered for older buildings. Even more so when an old building is made “new” during a refurbishment. TAME Centre (Tanjung Aru Marine Ecosystem) is a building aimed at providing space for events focused on environmental and creative themes. It isn’t just the intent of the building that’s amazing, but also how it was brought back to life. The building was first established as a communications hub for the British colony in Sabah. TAME spruced it up not only by giving it a fresh coat of paint but also by building up a new wall. This wall is the center-piece of the TAME building. With the collaboration between JF Production and Ripple, the wall was

ECO NEWS

built out of 40 thousand used glass bottles. The glass bottles were arranged into patterns of seaweed under the sea, allowing for an amazing view when hit with the correct light. It’s called the Wall of Hope. Bottles weren’t the only items that were donated to TAME. The paint they used for the walls were all donated too, apart from white paint which they used to lighten up the colours. The walls were painted in the patterns of the dissection of the ocean floor, the goal being to show visitors the beauty we’re actually missing out on. Apart from the newly built and painted walls, the classic feel of the colonial era building is kept the same. TAME aims to educate the community on the importance of preserving our heritage, animals, marine life, and implementing green technology in our daily lives. They lend the space for NGOs to conduct classes and talks for the public. Recently, they featured Kupi Bug, an event sharing people’s love of coffee and a workshop to make Coffee Bugs out of the aluminum containers. TAME is looking forward to more events like this in the future. Currently, they’re undergoing further renovations to make the space more inviting for visitors. The centre is trying their best to only use building materials that are recycled or upcycled, which were donated by the community. It’s certainly nice to see organizations trying their best to not only spread awareness but also practice what they preach.

AUtomotive

Are you considering an electric vehicle?

E

lectric Vehicles, or EVs, have been popping up from major manufacturers lately. Gone are the days of the plain hybrids like the Prius and and Insight, we’re now looking at a new age in the automotive industry. Tesla’s Model S Plaid and Porsche’s Taycan are two hard-hitters in the EV industry that are known for their performance whilst only being powered by electricity. It’s tempting to get into the green trend but do be careful of the few mistakes you might make entering the world of EVs. OVERESTIMATING THE INFRASTRUCTURE Malaysia, especially in Sabah, has not gone with the EV minded infrastructure as of yet. It’s still difficult to find charging stations anywhere apart from some dealerships that offer the service or if you’ve established one at home. This means that it’ll be harder to consider taking the car for trips that are miles aways from a charging station. That’s not to say they’ll be bad for daily driving around the city, but you won’t have the luxury of simply pulling up to a charging station when needed. NOT CONSIDERING THE PRICE A car is already expensive as it is. Now consider a model that is technologically advanced, it’ll surely have a higher cost. You should also consider the import costs or taxes that’ll be factored into the total amount. What about the cost of maintaining and finding spare parts? At this point in time, only manufacturer service centres know and are allowed to work on maintaining

by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash 20

and fixing these types of cars, and they aren't cheap. You can’t simply drive into a random workshop, like we do now, and get something fixed. I haven’t even mentioned the cost of installing a charging dock in your home yet. RUSHING YOUR PURCHASE The worst thing you can do is rush into a purchase. Like everything else, consider doing the research and be patient. Technology is only getting better all the time. Although it might not be the case, you might just regret owning a car that has older tech when a new one is being launched in a few months down the road. Plus, the government might just offer tax rebates or incentives in the near future, so that may help with the overall cost of buying and owning an EV. Owning an advanced EV can happen now and is no longer a dream for the future. However, it’s still a smart move to sit back and wait out the advancements in technology and our local automotive environment to be sure of the stability of your investment. Who knows, it might turn out to be the best or the worst purchase of your entire life.

Bird Watching for Your Well Being

B

ird Watching or commonly known as 'Birding' is an activity where a person uses a pair of binoculars or camera with a telephoto lens to go out and look for our feathered friends. Indulging in nature has proven to improve one's mental health and what better way to do that than searching for birds! A recent research done by the University of Exeter has found that Bird Watching can have a positive effect on a person's mental health. They discovered that people who are able to watch birds from the comfort of their home have a lower risk of depression, stress, and anxiety. We humans naturally seek connection with nature, and as a nature enthusiast myself, I would agree that watching and hearing birds in my garden helps me gain focus and release tension. Birding does not have to be out in the deepest of jungles where you'd have to track for hours on end. Instead, birding can be done anywhere, from your own garden, to your local park and even from your bedroom window.

by Alexander John Image | Alexander John 24

Birding is not restricted to just finding birds, but it takes a person out in nature to admire the beauty outside our window. It opens our eyes to the see beauty in the tiniest of insects, to the largest of animals and the many beautiful sceneries we have here in Borneo. So the next time you're taking a stroll through your garden or park, bring along a pair of binoculars or camera with you and observe how majestic our feathered friends are, but most importantly feel the serenity of nature!

Personality

Outstanding social Entrepreneurs

tanding out is not merely looking different compared to everyone else. It’s about being different for the right causes and doing something beneficial for everyone. What good is being “unique” when it doesn’t cause a positive change in one’s life? Well, our personalities are standing out from the rest of the pack. With the hard work they’ve put into their businesses, they received the Social Impact Matching Grant (SIM) by Penjana which was powered by MOSTI, MaGIC, and YIM. The grant is part of an initiative to support Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship in Sabah. Get to know more about them and what their businesses are about.

Tressie Yap Chui Kie

Founder of upcycled Shack

What started as a personal journey to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly has now blossomed into a social enterprise. Tressie Yap was born in Sandakan but she has lived in Kota Kinabalu for decades now. While working as an architect by day, she founded Upcycled Shack in 2014 and has whole heartedly involved her community with her effort of reducing and cutting down waste. It’s been exploring the potential of household waste materials and finding value within products upcycled from waste material. Upcycled Shack is now a social enterprise that helps empower under-privilaged communities to produce artisanal crafts, wearables, and merchandise from upcycled materials. Their mission is to bring greater awareness to the local community, NGOs, governmental bodies, and the public on how waste materials can be reused and repurposed. In return, it creates a circular economy amongst the under-privilaged community. During her downtime, Tressie is focused on the R&D of her products. She is 100% involved in her effort and works hard to study how to implement different types of materials with each other. Examples would be a brilliant necklace made of used electrical wires and laptop sleeves made of household plastic packaging. She wants to shift the focus of the company into something bigger that involves making masks and sanitary pads. In order to do so, she successfully raised funds to buy sewing machines for her community by issuing a “Botak Challenge”, whereby she shaved her head and raised RM19000, matching the amount of the grant from SIM. The impact of Upcycle Shack can be felt through their 3Ps and 3UPs: Planet - Upcycling to minimise household waste and providing options to reduce waste discharge. People - Upskilling their work abilities and confidence level by empowering them. Profit - Upscaling the community’s livelihood. From these impacts, Tressie aims to make the effort a recognisable enterprise and more sustainable, because there are still bigger corporations and government entities that don’t recognise the importance of such efforts. They are still bidding with cost and not by the merit of certain enterprises. For her, it’s more challenging to run a social enterprise when we need financial sustainability to advocate a mission set. Therefore, building a good ecosystem with conscious buyers is important for a circular economy and social impact. 26

Gerald Thomas Wong

Founder of ge nitrate solutions

Gerald puts all of his time and energy in his company GE NITRATE SOLUTIONS. Immediately after breakfast, he drives all the way to Kimanis from Kota Kinabalu almost everyday to go manage his farmland. If needed, he’ll drive back to meet up with clients. At night, he takes the time to plan tomorrow’s schedule right before he sleeps. This is his devotion to achieve success for the company. The company adopts aquaponics to produce organically grown vegetables all year round. This technique allows for environmentally friendly farming without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilisers, and avoids water wastage. At the same time, they do freshwater crayfish and fish activities as well as supplying modern farming tools and organic fertiliser for communities based in Sabah and Sarawak. GE NITRATE SOLUTIONS aims to reduce water usage in the farming and fishery industry. Traditional farming uses up to 90% water compared to modern farming that adapts aquaponic or closed-loop systems. In said systems, water is re-treated, recycled, and reused. Plus, ammonia discharge from fisheries can be harmful to aquatic animals. Thus, they want to reuse the ammonia by converting it into nitrate, which is useful for plant growth. Organic fertiliser from fish waste, to put it simply. Gerald’s goals for the future not only involves setting up a future farm in Penampang but also establishing his farm for integrated farming and agro tourism. He believes this can be the future for attracting tourists, locally and internationally, to Sabah. He also plans to fully convert waste into organic fish feed and vegetable fertiliser. Apart from this, he’s very proud to have created a few job opportunities for the local community in Kimanis. Currently, he has trained 6 Kimanis youths who are now taking care of the produce in the farm. You might say 6 is a small number but it’s a big start since these youths now know every ins-and-outs of the trade. With his farms steadily growing, there’s certainly more meaningful job opportunities to look forward to. That is the key for Gerald. Not only to create and spread awareness and techniques for environmentally friendly ways of farming, but also to make it a meaningful experience for everyone involved. You can preach the word to everyone but it won’t stick with them unless it means something for them. So let’s look forward to what’s to come from Gerald and GE NITRATE SOLUTIONS.

Juddy Lasius

Founder of Moyog innovation house

Helping people has always been Juddy’s purpose. A native of Kampung Madsiang, Penampang, she is the founder of Moyog Innovation House (MIH). A very hardworking individual, she puts 100% effort into her cause all while still having the time to care for her home. MIH provides training and advice services for marketing and promoting rural products, plus a learning space for the community to further enrich their skills. They mainly focus on the Moyog communities that were affected economically by the pandemic. This includes helping local farmers, micro-enterprises, and individual entrepreneurs to market their products and produce online. Their mission is to establish economic resilience in rural communities, reduce poverty, improve inequality, and provide a sustainable environment and business innovations for rural communities in Moyog. In her free time, Juddy loves to learn new skills in art and cooking. She actively joins decoupage and cooking courses. Mastering new skills allows her to pass on the knowledge to her community members. This goes hand in hand with the focus of MIH, providing and enriching the community with new knowledge. Juddy has taught how to paint beautiful floral prints for pots and cooking sambal belacan, bake cakes, and make ice-cream. For Juddy, her proudest achievements yet are to have successfully gotten the SIM grant and give back to the community. With the grant, MIH will be able to purchase solar dryers to dry ginger, lemon, and ingredients for herbal tea. She plans to master dried food processing but she admits she has a lot more to learn but that’s just the process she has to go through to become successful in what she does. Apart from MIH, Juddy also works together with NGOs and community based organisations such as TONIBUNG, RIPPLES, PACOS Trust, Kivatu Nature Farms, and also budding entrepreneurs. If you haven’t noticed it already, Juddy loves giving back to her community. Her every action is centred on her community.

Simon Davis

Founder of Seadling

Hailing from Perth, Australia, Simon was involved with marine conservation in Indonesia and has been living in Sabah for 3 years now. He has always been frustrated with the many challenges of keeping our oceans clean. From all his time working in marine conservation, he’s actively looking for ways to not only take care of our ocean but also involve the local communities and help them earn a living through it. That is why he founded SEADLING. SEADLING produces supplements and functional ingredients made from the natural superfood seaweed. They are a proud social and environmental impact company and they work closely with the seaweed farming communities in Sabah to support them in growing the best seaweed while encouraging them to adopt sustainable practices. With their support, SEADLING believes that it can improve seaweed farming practices, create opportunities for stable income, and expand the positive environmental benefits of this type of farming. As Simon put it himself, seaweed is a superfood with a lot of uses and benefits. He is currently overcoming the challenges of innovating new products with seaweed in mind. The processing issues they’re facing are slowly but surely being sorted out. Though, they are aiming to farm and produce a million tons a year of seaweed by 2030. They want to solve food security challenges posed by the world’s population rapidly expanding growth while our land’s ability to grow food is coming increasingly under pressure. Ocean based farming can provide the needed food to feed the future while also producing products such as bioplastics, fuels, and pharmaceuticals. Participating in an international panel with the United Nations was a great experience for them. SEADLING is proud to have had a chance to join top leaders and scientists in discussing the environment and communities. In recent years, there have been a number of exciting new developments in seaweed science and SEADLING believes that Sabah is set to be a world leader in this field.

Idrizam Bin Idris

Founder of JFA AGRO enterprise

Idrizam is the founder of Koko Loko by JFA Agro Enterprise. Koko Loko is inspired by his 12 yearold son, Armand. In fact, Armand is the CEO of Koko Loko. It’s a company based on producing snacks like Cocoa Granola, Chocolate Trail Mix, Flavoured Cocoa Nibs, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and more. It’s based in Kinarut and is focused on the healthy and conscious urban working adults. Koko Loko offers premium, healthy, and tasty snacks for the busy lifestyle of their audience. They source their cocoa directly from the small cocoa growers across Sabah at above market price. They aim to help said growers to earn significantly better incomes and revive the cocoa industry in Sabah. They also help train these growers to increase the yield and quality of the cocoa they produce. Idrizam believes that Sabah can become a big player in the cocoa industry and produce high quality cocoa beans. He also wants to involve the youth and show them that the cocoa industry can offer great opportunities to succeed. With all that said, Idrizam still finds it challenging to find people who are invested in reviving the cocoa industry. More often than not, he’ll encounter people who only meet him halfway. Though, he has found 1 or 2 growers that are as determined as he is. They’ve been working closely together to make their vision come true. Even now, Koko Loko’s chocolate is already being compared to the best brands in the world. For Idrizam, receiving such compliments is his proudest achievement yet, encouraging him to drive forward with his goals. At the end of the day, it’s great to see a company and the community surrounding it grow together. Supporting local enterprises and businesses can go a long way. We don’t actually realise the amount of support we’re providing for our local communities and economy.

Frazer Mark Markos

Founder of MF BORNEO AGRONIZUW

You know what they say, the coconut is the tree of life. Frazer Mark Markos has taken this quote into an entrepreneurship conversation. Hailing from Matunggong, Kudat, Frazer founded MF Borneo Agronizuw Sdn Bhd. Every morning, Frazer will guide his workers for the tasks of the day. The enterprise is focused on the processing and production of downstream products from coconut waste. Among the the products they produce are growing media (coco peat and coco fiber), coconut charcoal, and coconut shell crafts. These products are being made by the B40 community. Most rural communities have inconsistent income for their families, so Frazer’s company aims to tackle this issue by helping these communities out with work while taking care of the environment. Kudat has the largest coconut plantation in Sabah, with most of the businesses centred around the selling and buying of coconuts. However, the coconut waste isn’t being managed properly, with most of the waste being thrown and burned. It has caused a huge problem in terms of polluting our environment. This is where MF Borneo Agronizuw comes in. Frazer feels that as a community, it’s our responsibility to manage this waste. Turning them into new downstream products adds a bigger value and produces a high demand for them, especially in modern agriculture. Their main challenge is the machine they’re using for the processing. There was a time the machine broke during the peak of processing. It was a bit stressful as it affected their production, causing some customers to cancel their orders. However, having gone through such hardships have made achievements much sweeter. They were the Top 10 finalists for Pitch Borneo 2020 and Sabah Entrepreneur Creation 2021. Frazer is also proud to have helped the community through the business, with some of them having successfully acquired motorcycles and built their own homes from their hard work. The company hopes that the government will put more attention towards social enterprises as the business models are focused more towards the community and social causes rather than towards profit. This means we’re helping our community grow along with our economy, and eventually our country as well. They also aspire to be the leading coconut waste processor in Sabah.

AESTHETIC

RESTORE YOUR INTIMATE INSTINCTS

M

any women today are willing to spend a large sum of money to get the best and maximum facial treatments. They are willing to do all this just to get a healthier, more radiant face and reach as far as possible from effects of aging. However, what about their vaginal condition, don’t think that their ‘miss V’ also requires similar treatment? Did you know that just like the skin on the rest of a Woman’s body, the vagina will also experience the aging process in line with that person’s increasing age? The aging process of the vaginal area begins when women are in their 20s. Frequent changes are like fat reduction in the labia majora (outer labia), and subsequently followed by changes within the vagina. When the pre-menopause process starts, the surface of the wall in the miss V area will become thinner; the muscles in the pelvis will weaken and relax. Around the same time, women tend to lament from their husbands being unsatisfied in the bedroom, thus causing some women to start feeling less confident or ashamed to engage in sexual activity with their spouse, which might cause the collapse of the household.

by Dr Katalina Image | Unsplash

Realizing this fact, vaginal rejuvenation trends using lasers (more often called laser vaginal rejuvenation/ laser vaginal tightening) are now known to many women. In the past, many women were ashamed and afraid to see the doctor for such procedures because previous procedures required surgery (vaginoplasty/ hymenoplasty), postoperative pain, and had a longer ‘downtime’. Now, with advanced technology, the laser procedure can be performed without the need for surgery; it does not require anesthetic, it’s painless, fast and easy, and does not have any down- time. ‘Treatment time is about 15 minutes. Women can go back to work or to their everyday activities as usual after the treatment. The treatment required is 1-3 visits depending on the condition of the woman (e.g. age, number of children, birthing & surgical history, bladder problems, etc.). After Effects of Laser treatments are usually faster and more effective and for some individuals the effects are almost immediate. TREATMENT RESULTS Vagina • • • • •

Tightens and thickens the vaginal wall Reduces dehydration (hypo-secretion) and pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia). Repairs the vaginal mucosa wall by stimulating the formation of collagen (collagen remodeling of vaginal tissue) thus enabling the tightening of the vagina. Anti-inflammation is particularly helpful in treating frequent vaginal discharge (recurrent thrush) and elevating immunity. Helps to cope with ‘urinary incontinence’ problems or better known as urinary incontinence where this condition occurs in women who have had many children, elder women or women who have ever had surgery to deliver children in which the bladder muscle becomes traumatic and weak. Most women complain of “leakage” when they laugh, sneeze or cough. Labia

Dental

pulling the pain out

W

e’ve all been there. The experience of tooth pain can become so unbearable that the best thing to do is to just pull it out. Spoiler alert, it’s best to visit your nearest dentist when you do want to pull out your teeth. Together with Dr. Sylvia from Phi Dental, here are a few facts to take note of before you go and pull your teeth out yourself. A tooth extraction is an outpatient procedure performed by a dentist. In some cases, removing a tooth completely from its spot in the jaw bone may be necessary to preserve or improve dental health. Performed for a wide variety of reasons, the most common one is because the tooth has become unrestorable through tooth decay, periodontal disease, or dental trauma. Sometimes, wisdom teeth need to be removed when other conservative treatments haven’t worked. In orthodontics, healthy teeth that are crowded may also be removed to create space for the rest of the teeth. What happens though, if you don’t pull out your tooth? Well, a tooth infection can happen when bacteria enters the nerve or soft tissue of the tooth. While rare, it is possible for tooth infection to kill you. Untreated tooth infection can spread to other tissues in your body within weeks or months. This can potentially lead to life-threatening complications.

by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash 34

As I mentioned earlier, it’s typically a bad idea to pull the tooth out ourselves. It can cause the tooth to break off before the root or even potentially damage the surrounding teeth. That’s why dentists have specific instruments and steps when it comes to tooth extraction. First, the tooth is loosened with an instrument called an elevator. The dentist then uses forceps to remove the tooth. However, extraction begins with a shot of anaesthetic for the tooth, gum, and bone tissue surrounding it, so that you don’t feel the pain during the process. There are alternatives to tooth extraction, such as surgical methods performed for wisdom teeth. For children, dentists will advise self exfoliation for baby teeth. Though, when left too long, the retained baby teeth will cause crowding in the long term. Though, at the end of the day, you should definitely visit your dentist to help diagnose the need for tooth extration.

Rants & Raves

is it time to get out?

ith borders lifted and travel and restriction bans loosened, we celebrate freedom from our own locked doors for the past year of lockdown. Flights getting packed, travel industry showing recovery, hotels are filled and everyone being out for a cuti-cuti Malaysia spree is definitely looking less gloomy and depressing as the economy shows improvement and businesses can operate with better cash flow recently. Personally, I’m very happy to be back out meeting people, dining out for meals – in fact I’ve been dining out almost every alternate days compared to pre-covid years, and has been actively moving around more frequently to run errands and just hangout. Who would even resist travelling right now right? We can finally use those long overdue annual leaves, take a break and relax and enjoy the carefree mind. The moment international borders are open, airports will be packed and tourism will surely be back on track! Interstate movements itself has been showing massive traffic surge and we don’t even mind the crazy jams; or do we? With all that freedom and leniency given, it also shocks me on the crowd we see in malls and the current SOPs not exactly helping much in certain ways. I have been to malls and places which are packed with people and social distancing is in no way followed, while I may be quite paranoid and careful – my observation of the public scares me every time.

by Geraldine Yong Image | Unsplash

Children are quite prone to being exposed, as they are not vaccinated, but they are also out and about in the crowds which may be perceived as “herd immunity protected”. However, with recent findings as well as personal social circles, it proves that, although vaccinated – we are still capable of testing positive for Covid, which will put children at a high risk. I am not saying we should all lock up at home for good – but to be careful of our surroundings and avoid crowded places when not necessary as a common practice. Social distancing is the major issue that until today if observed properly; majority of the community ignores or at least as a habit hard to keep track of. We tend to still be closer at the paying counter, lining up closer to make sure you are nearer to the door, or squeeze in to that elevator to avoid the wait for the next one. These little things however, is still something we should keep in mind post-covid for our own safety and also comfort of others. Let’s keep in mind to still practice SOPs as much as possible to reduce the risk of anymore spikes as we move towards a better post-covid life.

f you’re a fan of sci-fi and fantasy stories such as Star Wars and Game of Thrones, you have Frank Herbert to thank for. Many people might not realise this - especially if you’re one of our younger readers - that the movie Dune, which was recently out in cinemas and streaming on HBO Max, is based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. Dune is frequently described as the best selling and one of the most influential sci-fi books ever. It was adapted into a movie in 1984 by David Lynch to poor critical response, a television miniseries in 2000, as well as a series of video games and card games. Dune is set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society. It follows Paul Atreides, whose family is called upon to take control of Arrakis - a hostile planet almost entirely covered in desert and is the only place where a spice called Melange is found. Melange is the most important thing in the universe, used to prolong life, expand consciousness and allow interstellar travel. A symbol of wealth and status that is worth dying for. House Harkonnen was in control of Arrakis before House Atreides was granted stewardship of Arrakis and its spice. Thus, this is where the conflict begins. At its core, the story of Dune is about a good old-fashioned power struggle. However, the story is much richer and more complex than the summation suggests. It is rife with politics,

by Jeremy Tan Image | Multiple Sources 40

religion, manipulation, legends and prophecies - tropes that are very common in most sci-fi and fantasy series. The novel has a reputation - even amongst its hardcore fans - for being dense and complex, however it stands to this day as one of the most important literary works of our time. Take Star Wars for example: The most famous planets in both Star Wars and Dune, namely Tatooine and Arrakis, are incredibly similar, sandy planets that are essential to the story. They both feature gigantic sand-dwelling worm-like creatures. They are both ruled by evil galactic empires. We can go on, but these are just a few of the major similarities. The recent adaptation of Dune is the movie directed by Denis Villeneuve and is arguably one of the most anticipated movies of 2021. If you’ve watched it and you feel there are elements similar to your favourite sci-fi stories, remember - it was probably inspired by Dune.

oney, we’re back! Yes, honey is back on the menu and it’s not taking a back seat this time. Qream Bee is putting it as the main focus on their dessert themed snacks. With the main ingredients being honey, ice-cream, and corn flakes, the choice of toppings are all picked by Qream Bee to compliment the honey. The honey and honeycombs they use in their desserts are imported for the best quality and taste. It might be the first time I’ve consumed honey this fresh, but it certainly won’t be the last time. Our favourites from the menu have to be the Fruity Sting and Fig Bee. The former features almond, apricot, popping pearl balls, and caramel syrup. It’s all topped with a sizable chunk of honeycomb. On the other hand, the Fig Bee offers toppings such as figs, marshmallows, caramel, and the popping pearl balls. You can also try out their Choco Bee, a simple yet delightful combination of sweet and crunchy with Oreo crumbs, Nestum, popping pearl balls, and chocolate syrup. Although, whichever choice you get, you won’t regret the sensation of the honey touching your tongue. @qreambee

ith 56 years of operations, all the way back when Kampung Air pioneering days with the main sea view – this family favourite location would ring a bell when generations young and old think of Chinese cuisines. Known as one of the oldest hotel downtown Kota Kinabalu City, The Winner Hotel and it’s Restaurant has been standing strong despite redevelopments, competition and even more so , the recent pandemic. The place has been locally known and is still packed over the weekends for families during dinner – with a 120+ seating space on the 2nd floor of Winner Hotel, and an additional space for events on the upper floor, they also do catering and events upon requests. Winner Hotel Restaurant is definitely a family favourite focusing on Cantonese and Hakka styled cooking with some revamps on local flavours, here are some highlights on their bestsellers! Aside from everyone’s favourite complimentary peanuts that is;

Newly added addition would be their Fish Head Curry, savoury on a spicier kick with touch of local flavours the curry will spark additional rice bowls calling to eat along with fried tofu that has soaked up goodness in every bite. Portion wise is definitely enough for a 5-6pax for the dish alone. Give it a try if you are opting for a more Malaysian local taste. As side from fish head, you may opt for their fish slices alternatives too. The best of both worlds when you combine Sweet and Sour Pork with BBQ Pork Ribs; and at Winner Hotel Restaurant they have the exact combination of both with Baked Pork Ribs with Special Sauce. Sweet and salty, fully coating the ribs making sure every bite was flavourful and bite size. This is a fan favourite that should not be left out if you are a fan of BBQ Pork ribs and Sweet and Sour. Originated locally, the wet butter prawn was a hit before the pandemic to Chinese tourist and as we all know – nobody resists Wet Butter Prawns. Especially when they are readily peeled! Buttery sauce was as expected, thick and flavourful, and the prawn servings were very generous. Psst – they go well with the Mantou too if you have more than expected sauce left. As for other young and old favourites, we also had the Crispy Salted Egg Oyster Mushroom. It is salted egg heaven with a crispy crunchy coated salted egg yolk coating and a juicy bouncy mushroom inside, best paired with warm fragrant white rice to balance out the overpowering salted egg flavour. While other comfort options would be Japanese beancurd with crabmeat and egg sauce, steamed pork and hearty soups selections. Although they may be packed for dinner; you may drop by during the day to try out their variety of Hakka-Cantonese cuisines leaving your tummy happy and satisfied. Weekday night are surprisingly filled as well so reservations are encouraged.
