YONO IS MORE THAN AN APP, IT REPRESENTS THE FUTURE
S
abah Credit Corporation made a soft launch of a stateowned app for future financial management with ease and convenience, which took place at Sabah Credit Corporation offices on Friday, 7th of July 2023. The project is being led by Mr. Taitim Tulas, the CEO of Sabah Credit Corporation with Mr. Nelson Chan, the DCEO of SCC, helping with strategizing the technological planning.
closing for good, reduced incomes and rising unemployment becoming a common occurrence. Mr. Nelson remarks that “over 30k companies closed for good in March of 2020, the highest number in August. Nearly 100k Malaysians lost their jobs at the beginning of MCO, says HR Ministry. SOCSO in Malaysia revealed that 74.6% of those suffering the loss of employment in Sabah are workers whose earnings are below RM2,000”.
The launch of the YONO app is an after effect to the success of another app by the Sabah Credit Corporation, Sabah Pay. An efficient payment collection app played a key role in providing unparalleled convenience to the citizens of Sabah.
To prepare for a similar unforeseeable future, Sabah Credit Corporation came up with a digital ecosystem for everyone, YONO Superapp. Everyone from different walks of life can easily utilize YONO for a wide array of services that span from financial management to their daily lifestyle. The app offers accessibility to all which includes loans, insurance, investment, writing their will or simply just the usage of YonoPay, an integrated e-wallet within the Superapp ecosystem that also serves as a tool for government grants and initiatives. The YonoPay e-wallet serves as a digital wallet to safeguard citizen’s welfare and ensure their financial well-being.
YONO is an acronym for ‘You Only Need One’. During the soft launch, Mr. George Taitim Tulas elaborated on the app that “with its innovative features and personalized recommendations, YONO empowers users to stay ahead in the ever-changing financial landscape”. It was a tough time for Malaysia during the Covid-19 pandemic, even for the people of Sabah. The country went to a COVID-19 movement control order that went nationwide. Numerous amounts of citizens have lost their jobs and some aren’t even unable to keep their businesses going. The private sector is the one that faces huge financial challenges, with businesses 10
This app features exclusive, easy, fast and secure financial solutions to meet the many needs of the user. Whether it be a dream vacation, child’s education or for retirement, the YONO app seeks to make that financial planning a reality.
Mr. George Taitim Tulas emphasized the convenience of the app giving individuals quick access to the funds they need due to its effortless loan application process and a quick approval granting in just a minute. He added that the app offers a generous borrowing limit that caters to the loan product chosen in which users can borrow from RM 1,000 up to RM 5,000 depending on their circumstances all while having the privilege of obtaining the funds according to their circumstances. He also stated that “YONO offers highly competitive interest rates with the potential to secure rates as low as 1%, which allowing individuals to borrow funds while maintaining affordable and manageable repayments. YONO guarantees the utmost security and privacy, eliminating concerns about high-interest money lenders, electronic scammers, or illegal loan sharks. It provides a self-service secure platform for individuals seeking a safe and reliable financial solution,” he said. During the soft launch, Mr. Nelson Chan briefed about the app stating that “YONO is a secured and flexible financing app. The important thing is the self-service platform that offers instant loan approval.” He further added on how the app will function, where you only need 3 minutes to do the onboarding, 2 minutes to browse and apply the products, and 1 minute to get approved and disburse. This initiative helps to realize the objective of SCC, which is “Help contribute towards the socio-economic development of the State of Sabah”. The launch of the app which looks forward to increase the convenience of financial management poses as a step for the Sabah Credit Corporation to achieve their objective all while making it beneficial and simple for the residents of Sabah. The launch of this app marks the beginning of an exciting journey driven by the organization’s vision to make a difference and its mission to provide easy financing to selected individuals in need. YONO is more than just an app; it signifies the future. YONO is available for download at Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

FEX: ICARUS FELL RISING these kinds of genre, especially those who can relate to the lyrics. As time goes on, his style of songs would constantly evolve as he takes on different genres. He currently works together with his beats producer, whom he call Joey. His producer would send beats to him and he would brainstorm for the lyrics. Occasionally, he would make his own instrumentals, especially since he knows how to play guitar and piano. It is worth mentioning that there are a few artists that Fex listens to and looks up to that inspired him to make music. Notably, Niki, Daniel Caesar, Rini, and Keshi. He also supports local artists such as WhooGuan, Koel, and Gavndiorr. These talented individual motivates Fex to keep on making music. “Icarus Fell”, his new song accompanied with a music video, is his biggest project he has done yet. The music video itself is made entirely by a Sabahan Crew. Based on the myth of Icarus, his new song is about the persistence of going for something grand can destroy you. And yet, Icarus persevere and would keep going for it until he is completely destroyed. A message about the dangers of ambition.

exson Felix is a 19-year-old Sino-Kadazan musical artist who developed his hobby into his passion of sharing his personal life stories to the world through his musical talent. His stage name, Fex, derived from how his close peers usually refer to him casually.
If he’s not making songs, Fex would workout at a gym or casually plays his musical instruments to pass the time calmly. Fex is still a student with responsibilities. While he has no problem balancing between his school life and making music, there would still be challenges. Marketing is one of his biggest challenges, which he have to know the exact time and place for it. It doesn’t help that sometimes he has to go back and forth between Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur to manage both his normal life and his musical artistic life.
Fex used to be the kind of person who would only sing while showering because he wasn’t confident in his singing. At the age of 17 years old, he would have a lot of thoughts going through his mind which motivated him to start writing his own lyrics over any random instrumentals or beats he can find on Youtube. Fex has been making music for 2 years, since August of 2021. What started off as a small hobby of him writing his personal thoughts and his life stories as lyrics over any random instrumentals on YouTube, he quickly turns it into a way for him to express his stories to the world. In his early days of musical production, Fex would take a step into the industry by releasing “Guardian” and “Cigarettes”. His early works leans more towards being R&B, slow and relaxing. However, he started producing more upbeat songs that falls into the pop genre within his newer songs such as “Stray” and “Icarus Fell”. Fex’s songs would resonate with those who enjoys 16

CASHLESS OPTIONS
G
oing cashless is something we’re slowly but surely moving towards. Taking a lot of cash, especially change, with us wherever we go can be troublesome at times. It’s just easier to just take out your card or phone to pay for something. Well, that will certainly be our future with the types of e-payment methods that have popped up through the years.
Apps such as Google Wallet, Apple Pay, and Samsung Wallet/ Pay (they always change these names) have made it possible to “store” credit and debit cards in our phone. All we need to do after is take our phone out, choose our preferred card, and tap the machine as usual. The only downside for now, at least in Malaysia, is the limited banks that support this feature.
DuitNow is a one-stop solution to making and receiving payments from participating eWallets and banks. The QR codes are almost everywhere these days. You can use virtually any payment app to scan and instantly pay for the goods you’re buying, be it Boost, GrabPay, and even Touch N’ Go. Before DuitNow was introduced, you’d need to find specific QR codes for specific apps in order to make transactions possible. So if a shop only has a Boost QR code back in the day, you better hope you have a Boost account that’s topped up.
So, why not just use cards or apps that utilise them instead of downloading other eWallets and banking apps? Well, the biggest argument is the not so widespread use of “contactless card readers” by smaller shops or vendors. This same argument can be made for using cash instead of any app, but smaller shops vendors can and are printing their own DuitNow QR codes for customers to make payments. At the end of the day, having multiple payment options is the way to go.
Speaking of topping up, many people find it quite a hassle to do so. That’s why it was a godsend when banks developed their own apps that can scan DuitNow QR codes. With apps such as MAE, RHB Reflex, GO by Bank Islam, and many more, e-payments and online banking is easier than ever. Along with Boost, GrabPay, and Touch N’ Go, you can actually accomplish a lot with these apps, like paying your bills and even ordering food in the case of the Grab app.

MOUNT WULLERSDORF green rock creating a very striking contrast, which makes an out of this world scenery. The red water mentioned is actually part of Sungai Merah (Red River) found within the heath forest surrounding Mount Wullersdorf. The reddish tea colour stream in Wullersdorf forest is the result of the tanning effect leached out from the thick dead leaves and debris that cover the heath forest floor. The water is acidic but safe to drink. The heath forest is also home for some remarkable and rare plant species. One of the special trees found there is Tristaniopsis trees, easy to identify by its orange-brown, smooth and shiny trunk, with scrolls of bark that spontaneously peel-off, hanging as untidy bunches along the trunk and forming a heap at the base of the tree. The most fascinating feature of Mount Wullersdorf are the crystal rocks, which are abundant on the peak. Quite a number of rocks there are embedded with translucent white and pinkish crystals of different shapes and sizes. In nature, crystals can form when magma cools and hardens. This glittering beauty is another evidence that proves Mount Wullersdorf was used to be a volcano. But wait, Mount Wullersdorf has another fabulous mineral; gold itself. It’s estimated that about 30 tons of gold and 19 tons of silver are buried under a parcel of land about 948 hectares in the Mount Wullersdorf area.
I
f you love hiking or simply love to explore nature, then hiking up to the peak of Mount Wullersdorf should be on your list of things to do. The hiking trail up to the peak is considered one of the best hiking trails in Sabah. The height of Mount Wullersdorf is 430 metres (1,411 ft) above sea level. The one-way distance to the highest peak is 6 kilometres, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. There is a 1-kilometre shortcut from the peak back to the starting point, so in total it’s a 7-km loop trail. The climbing trail to Wullersdorf Peak is not too steep and difficult, even for beginners. To experienced hikers, it’s just a long hike. Mount Wullersdorf is an extinct volcano located in a Class-1 (fully protected) forest in Kunak (Tawau Division). To enter the mountain, you need a permit from the Sabah Forestry Department. Hiking up to the peak is simply like going through a beautiful forest set in a fantasy world usually seen in movies or read in books. For starters, you’ll encounter forms of red water and 22

John Payne, Executive Director of the Borneo Rhino Alliance; and Gary Albert, member of the Sandakan Borneo Bird Club. The session was moderated by Andrew Sebastian, President of the Ecotourism & Conservation Society Malaysia (ECOMY) and Executive Committee of the Asian Bird Fair.
Asian Bird Fair 2023 launched by Mr. Murad bin Abdul Rashid, Principal Assistant Secretary for the Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Environment Sabah representing The Honourable Datuk Christina Liew, Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment Sabah.

T
he 12th edition of the highly anticipated Asian Bird Fair (ABF) has concluded with resounding success, leaving bird enthusiasts, conservation advocates, and participants with a wealth of knowledge and memorable experiences. The event was organised by the Sabah Birdwatchers Association (SBWA) and supported by the Sabah Tourism Board. The Professional Conference Organiser was Place Borneo. The event, held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), from October 14 to 15, 2023, exceeded expectations in its mission to promote sustainable birding, ecological awareness, and the rich birdlife of Sabah. During the two-day affair, Asian Bird Fair 2023 featured a distinguished roster of speakers, including the globally renowned birdwatcher, Noah Strycker from the United States. The event showcased expert insights into birdwatching, nature conservation, and sustainable ecotourism through seven plenary sessions, four dynamic forums, and three interactive workshops. In one of the forums during ABF 2023, discussing ‘Conservation’, attention was raised on the need to protect the Tawai Forest Reserve not just for the recently rediscovered Bornean peacockpheasant (Polyplectron schleiermacheri) – once thought to be extinct in Sabah – but also for the other wildlife found in the forest reserve. This was discussed by panelists Prof. Dr. Benoit Goossens, Director of the Danau Girang Field Centre; Datuk Dr.
Dr. Benoit Goossens highlighted an existing statement by Coalition Humans Habitats Highways (3H) titled “Optimal Routing Options for the Telupid Section of the Pan Borneo Highway” dated 2nd March 2020. This statement was discussed and received the support of all members of the Asian Bird Fair. Moreover, host Sabah Birdwatchers Association pledged their membership in the coalition as announced by President Ron Pudin. Two weeks after ABF 2023, the ripples from this particular forum on ‘Conservation’ have created waves of change when the Minister of Public Works Sabah, Datuk Shahelmy Yahya, announced that the ministry will be presenting to the State Cabinet three alternative routes for the Pan Borneo Highway project to avoid cutting through and disturbing the Tawai Forest Reserve in Telupid. The event has now not just brought in tourism dollars but it also impacted change on Sabah’s biodiversity conservation by initiating action to protect the Bornean peacock-pheasant, subsequently providing a lifeline for other important wildlife in the forest reserve. The Asian Bird Fair drew a significant international audience, with over 2,000 visitors over 2 days and 140 exhibitors and delegates from 18 countries. The event highlighted birdwatching equipment, eco-tourism opportunities, and conservation efforts. Embracing the theme ‘Birding and Children: Hand in Hand,’ the fair successfully ignited a passion for bird conservation in the younger generation, fostering a sustainable future for birding and environmental stewardship. Family-friendly activities such as face painting, children’s bird coloring, and bird sketching engaged participants of all ages. The 12th Asian Bird Fair also featured pre/post tours for birdwatching expeditions to world-renowned natural areas in Sabah, including the Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark. The fair was made possible by partners and sponsors including Place Borneo Sdn Bhd, Amptitude PLT, ibis Styles Kota Kinabalu, Sony Malaysia, Bird Watching Asia, Shangri La Rasa Ria, Optisan Optic, Sticky Rice Travel, and Life Water Industries Sdn Bhd. TAITIM TULAS
CEO of Sabah Credit Corporation
T
he eagle eyed reader might’ve noticed we’ve featured Taitim Tulas in The Shopping Issue a couple years back. Since then, some things have changed in SCC, especially with business ramping up since the pandemic. So this time we’ll be picking his brain with what has changed since, his goals for SCC, and his personal thoughts on YONO (You Only Need One), a new superapp by SCC launching soon. Just a recap, Taitim was born in Kepayan, spending half of his primary school years in SK Kepayan before moving back to his father’s hometown in Tenom. After finishing his school days at St Anthony, he got a Diploma in Computer Science from ITM and then was recruited by Sabah Foundation as a programmer. He then went to England to get a degree after receiving a scholarship from the state government. He fully joined SCC in 1996 as a System Analyst. He worked hard and climbed the corporate ladder until in 2019, he was promoted as the CEO of SCC. Taitim noted the changes SCC has gone through since the last interview. The global financial landscape has seen many changes, especially in the advancement of technology within the financial industry. So in tandem, Taitim encouraged the upgrading of SCC’s loan system to be on par with that of a digital banking system. This allows SCC to improve its services delivery to its clients, reducing and/or eliminating human interference in the loan processing, thus speeding up the loan process as a whole. He also noted the introduction of new products by SCC, including the YONO superapp, which will soon launch as an “all-in-one” app for business and the community. There were new credit facilities, packages and programs introduced to assist the local business communities and entrepreneurs to jump start their businesses after the pandemic. The program such as the Entrepreneur Development Initiative Program came with special financing facilities such as the Revolving Credit facility and other financing facilities within the ‘We Care’ packages that were designed to assist the new and existing local entrepreneurs and SMEs. These facilities offer cheaper interest rates and some with zero interest. Currently, business operations using mobile trailers is being promoted, targeting the school leavers, unemployment youth and graduates, pensioners and others. Taitim is proud of the progress they’re making. He also spoke on strengthening their internal control, governance on integrity, and anti-corruption measures within the framework of ESG (Environment, Social & Governance). He believes SCC needs to continue evolving as an institution to remain sustainable to help and serve local businesses communities and the people of Sabah at large.
help SCC move forward, invested heavily on both technology and human resources capacity development. Moving past the pandemic, SCC is now in a better position to develop new program, new incentives and expansion of business. With that said, Taitim hopes said initiatives can positively impact not just individual businesses but also synergising with government agencies for better and effective implementations of projects for the agencies and the government. Taitim also gave his insight about YONO superapps. The superapp, according to Taitim, is all about lifestyle and giving opportunities to individuals or organisations. YONO can help users build up their businesses easier by putting their business on YONO with SCC giving a more complete service to the community through digital and online means. Working with international renowned firms, YONO can also help introduce and promote the beauty of Sabah to the international crowd, an opportunity for Sabah to be known not only about its business potentials but also as a tourist destination. It’ll help recharge the economy as a whole. That’s the bigger impact that Taitim is certain YONO can make for our community. In the last issue, we learned that Taitim is a big Liverpool football club fan. He assures that he’ll always be loyal with his support to the club. Reflecting on this, he believes loyalty is one of the best traits to have in a person despite the challenges they may go through. Apart from that, Taitim is also very tech savvy. It isn’t much about owning the latest technology, but more of trying to satisfy a curiosity. He is always curious on how certain new technology works and how it improves from the past generation. If he has the chance to try something new out, he’ll definitely do it. Taitim Tulas is a man with a vision to lead SCC to the future. In his own words, “SCC has existed for 68 years now, why not continue to help individuals, the communities, and even the State Government for another 68 years? Why not a hundred more years?” Through SCC, he aspires to continually provide finance, guidance, and help for those who want to realise their business dreams and those in need. Let create a better state and world to live in.
In terms of leading SCC post-pandemic, Taitim still maintains the PIT (People, Ideas, Technology) approach. He encourages his team to voice out their ideas, as it’s these different ideas that 25
NELSON CHAN
Deputy CEO of Sabah Credit Corporation to know the financial backgrounds of government staff. Nelson spoke about the difficulties of finding financial backgrounds of potential loan recipients from the general public. And so came the inspiration for the YONO superapp, to not only easily identify the financial background of potential loan recipients but also help them easily access the products SCC offers. Nelson commented that with YONO’s launching, the more users used the app, the data that can be gathered. This data will then be used to guide users on which SCC product is right for them. The soon to be launched app would combine 3 main services that SCC has planned. First, it’ll implement the functions of the Sabah Pay app, this app helps users to deal with utility and government agencies all in one app. Second, YONO will serve as an app for users to get to know and apply for the products that SCC offers. Lastly, SCC is also establishing their own e-wallet system that will be introduced in the app. Nelson hopes that with these functions, it’ll be more convenient for users to access said functions all through one superapp. Thus the name, YONO, You Only Need One.
N
elson Chan plays a big role for SCC when it comes to information and technology. Hailing from Sandakan, Nelson has a background in Technology and business since 2003. He has been part of the SCC team for 16 years and is now the Deputy CEO in charge of the Technology Division. His main role is to help the CEO plan and strategize the organisation strategy in terms of technology. As you have guessed, his daily routines would always include planning and designing strategies, and find ways to realise the CEO’s vision and missions for SCC, especially in terms of the technology. And one of these strategies include the launching of the YONO superapp. Nelson is the chief strategist for the YONO ecosystem. He guides his team to make sure the development of YONO is a success. He also helps convey, implement, and change the CEO’s strategies to the IT team responsible for the app development. The inspiration for the YONO superapp came from the pandemic, noted Nelson. Many lost their jobs and businesses during that time. SCC has always been there to help finance those in need, but historically, they’ve dealt with more government staff compared to the general public. This is mainly because it’s easier
26
One of the biggest challenges Nelson saw during developing the YONO superapp was how the Malaysian industry isn’t quite ready for the many ideas SCC has come up with. For example, going fully digital in the loan process. SCC can have a fully digital system, but other entities that are part of the process, still need to manually handle. However, Nelson believes the YONO superapp can be the future for Sabah. It’ll be more convenient and faster to provide financing to those who need it. Since SCC has the ecosystem in place, they can help individuals and SMEs as well. It is truly a Sabahan product developed to help Sabahans in need, which is equal to, if not better than, other existing e-wallets. Talking to Nelson, you can sense that he is very proud of the work his team has accomplished with the YONO superapp. He is also a self-proclaimed tech enthusiast, as his world mainly revolves around technology. Joining SCC 16 years ago, he has helped implement a new core bank system for the corporation, and now he is building another ecosystem for the organisation. However, Nelson would spend his free time meditating and clear his mind to tackle the challenges of work. At the end of the day, Nelson Chan is playing a huge role not only in the development of the YONO superapp and helping SCC reach its potential, but also in providing convenience in the financial sector for businesses, individuals, and the community.

WELLNESS
HEALTH AND WEALTH – ONE AND THE SAME
F
inancial struggles cause stress – this is something many of us can agree on. In fact, most Malaysians identify money as their biggest source of worry and anxiety. A 2021 survey found that 71% of Malaysian employees are worried about their financial health, compared to the 66% and 62% who reported concerns for their physical and mental health. These numbers are higher than in other countries: the same survey was done in Singapore, the UK, New Zealand and Australia, with conclusions of 46-50% of people worrying about their mental health. Financial, physical, and mental wellbeing are more intertwined than one would assume. Experts all agree that financial security is heavily associated with better physical and mental health, and studies find that 1 in 5 people with mental health issues are in problem debt. It’s easy to see how these problems affect each other: periods of mental health issues can disrupt your ability to work, as well as affect your ability to stay on top of your finances. In turn, financial difficulties can worsen mental health; finances are a huge source of worry and anxiety, and the stigma around debt means people struggle with asking for help and isolate themselves. When it comes to financial wellbeing, it helps to stay organised. Monthly payments like bills and insurance can be easily automated via e-banking, so you’ll never worry about a missed payment. Having a budget to stick to can provide peace of mind and allow you to be more conscious about spending habits. 32
Perhaps the most important thing to remember about financial and mental wellbeing is to maintain a healthy relationship with keeping track of your money. Some people obsess over their finances, and others avoid even thinking about it. The key is to set a specific time each week to go over your budget and spending; a healthy balance that allows you to keep on top of your finances without having money worries constantly on your mind. If you’re struggling with financial and health problems, remember that you are not alone. Oftentimes the first step towards a solution is to talk to someone – whether it’s a professional (like a therapist or a financial counsellor) or just a close friend, talking about your worries can help you process feelings and take the weight off your shoulders. Even if it’s just for a little while, sometimes that’s all we need to start taking steps towards mental and financial wellbeing.

DENTAL
THE FINANCIAL WISDOM IN REGULAR DENTAL CHECKUPS
W
hen it comes to maintaining a healthy smile, it’s easy to underestimate the power of regular dental checkups. While they may seem like routine visits, these appointments are not only essential for your oral health but can also be financially savvy in the long run. The Dental Checkup Essentials Regular dental checkups typically include a thorough examination by your dentist, professional teeth cleaning, and a chance to discuss any concerns or issues you may be experiencing. Dentists use these visits to detect and address oral health problems early, which can prevent them from escalating into more significant, and often more costly, issues. Preventing Problems Before They Escalate One of the primary financial benefits of routine dental checkups is their ability to prevent major dental problems. During these visits, dentists can identify issues like cavities, gum disease, or even signs of oral cancer. By catching these problems early, treatment is often less invasive and more affordable. For instance, a small cavity can be filled with a relatively inexpensive dental filling, but if left untreated, it may progress to the point where a costly root canal or extraction is necessary. Oral Health and Overall Well-being The financial aspect extends beyond dental procedures alone. Your oral health is intricately linked to your overall well-being. Untreated dental issues can lead to systemic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and more. These conditions not 34
only come with significant medical costs but can also affect your quality of life and ability to work. Dental Insurance and Cost-Effective Care Many individuals have dental insurance, which can make regular checkups even more financially prudent. Dental insurance plans typically cover preventive services like checkups and cleanings at little to no cost, making these visits an excellent investment in your long-term oral and financial health. Apart from insurance, the Malaysian government has recently tabled a RM1,000 tax relief for dental examinations and treatments. Long-Term Savings Looking at the bigger picture, regular dental checkups are a wise financial move. By investing in preventive care, you reduce the risk of costly dental procedures in the future. The simple act of having your teeth professionally cleaned during these visits can help prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar, reducing the risk of gum disease. Gum disease, if left untreated, can lead to expensive treatments like deep cleanings and even surgery. Regular dental checkups are more than just appointments; they are strategic financial decisions. By investing in your oral health now, you can prevent larger expenses down the road. So, don’t skip your next dental appointment – your smile and your wallet will thank you. Image | Unsplash

PRICES SOAR AND SO DOES MY BLOOD PRESSURE
T
here’s a cycle with everything. Life cycle. Water cycle. Menstrual cycle. One thing affects the other and vice versa. The same goes for the cost of living in our country. Ok let me focus my attention on what’s happening around me. The prices of things haven’t gone up just by sens or a few ringgits. It’s more like RM10 and more. I don’t understand how this is ok. Where does one find the money to buy necessities? One could maintain their lifestyle if our places of employment would give us a pay raise but they can’t do that cause everything has gone up for them too. Catch 22… I see you. I’m just tired of all this, the increased cost drives some people to do bad things… some resort to stealing… yes. Breaking into houses, robbing people on the street and stealing from shops. My mind works in extremes if you can’t tell. I eat at this one seafood restaurant that I know for a fact has changed the rice that they use… and not changed for the better. I personally would pay a little more if it meant going back to the good rice. I’ve noticed portions getting smaller and I understand it’s necessary if the business doesn’t want to increase prices. Perhaps change the way the food is plated and maybe I won’t mind it as much. Just an idea cause I know F&B outlets constantly get criticism from patrons. 36
I don’t understand why the local government isn’t helping their people. Controlling prices of necessities and not allowing some businesses to hide stock and hike up prices unnecessarily. My simple minded reasoning is if the people who have the ability to make changes aren’t helping… tell me why are they holding these posts? Why are they allowing others to take advantage of us? Perhaps it is obvious that they still have money coming from all directions and therefore are not affected by these changes. Quite unfair. People have to live from paycheck to paycheck and when emergencies occur and they do happen, how does one make it work? How much budgeting can one do? It’s frustrating and unfair when there seems to be no end in sight. I want off this cycle!!!

GOTTA INVEST ‘EM ALL
POP CULTURE
The first Pokémon game was released in February of 1997. The game became so popular that it spawned merchandise such as plush, anime, and most importantly, trading cards. The slogan “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” sums it all up, encouraging fans to collect all the cards. In the fiscal year of 2022 to 2023, 9.7 billion cards have been printed, with an estimated 52.9 billion cards ever produced since its introduction. During the start of the Pokémon craze, these cards were collected by fans or those who literally play the card game. Only a few collected them as sort of an investment. The craze then died down, until the pandemic that is. YouTuber and influencer Logan Paul started to showcase himself collecting Pokémon cards to his audience. However, he showcased the hobby in an “investment” way rather than just collecting. Logan Paul even bought a card for more than 5 million dollars, which at this time is the most expensive Pokémon card ever. Seeing this, many started to follow suit, expecting to make a quick buck of their own. The popularity and prices of Pokémon cards shot up after this. So, should you sell your old Pokémon card collection, or go out buying cards? Well, you can…but don’t expect to get high prices for them. You need to get your cards inspected by the Professional Sports Authenticators (PSA). To fetch high prices, your cards need to be in mint condition, or what’s considered a PSA 10. It’ll also depend on the Pokémon, the rarity of the card, and how sought after the cards are. Plus, just like any investment, you’d risk the market crashing down anytime.
W
hat would you invest in? Real estate? Emerging companies? Stocks? Well, the idea of investing in pieces of cardboard is a better deal for some people. I’m talking about trading cards, specifically Pokémon. It isn’t anything new, people have been collecting them since Pokémon trading cards have been introduced, but the craze had a resurgence recently and it’s been drawing a lot of attention, especially in the investment crowd. In general, trading cards were reportedly introduced by Louis Prang in the 1850’s, a German who had a knack for business. He began publishing prints, maps, and sets of pictorial “album cards” that were sold to collectors and the general public alike. Somewhat of an innovation, baseball trading cards with the pictures of the players at the time, began appearing as the sport rose in popularity in the 1860’s. They were sold by various companies that might or might not have any connections to the sport, including chewing gum and cigarette brands. This was done as a way to advertise their products.

ocated in a hidden-ish spot in Sutera Avenue is a quaint little coffee bar called Decrypt Coffee Roaster. The name comes as an homage to the owner’s engineering background, hence she’s decrypting coffee now. Its calm and relaxing vibe is great if you’re doing work or hanging out with friends. However, it isn’t a plain coffee shop, but a coffee roastery, specialising in in-house specialty or competition grade coffee. If you just want coffee, the owner will recommend a cappuccino for you. For something different, you could actually pick your own beans that’ll suit your taste buds. The owner will ask for your preferences and recommend suitable coffee beans for you. Along with this, you’ll learn a thing or two about the beans as well. The Filter Coffee and Black Gold are my personal recommendations. Apart from the coffee, Decrypt also serves plenty of creamy and refreshing choices as well. The Ice Cream Latte is for those who prefer their coffee sweeter and creamy, the Creamy Cold Foam Matcha is a must for matcha lovers, while the Honey Yuzu Kumquat is a refreshing “soda” that’ll quench any thirst.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
NUR DAPUR - TOMYAM & NASI KATOK: A TASTE OF SOUTH EAST ASIA
C
alling all laksa, tomyam, and sambal lovers! Nur Dapur Tomyam & Nasi Katok should be on your radar if you’re in search of a new spot to get your spice fix. Named after one of the founders, Nurul, the Nur Dapur restaurant is located at the Inanam Bus Terminal Commercial Center. It was established in 2020, but moved to the current location a year ago. Nur Dapur’s welcoming atmosphere evokes a cosy and familiar vibe for any diner. With a simple menu of options, you’ll easily find something you like in no time. Now without further ado, let’s get on to the food. Nur Dapur has a few options when it comes to their snacks and finger foods. To get a taste of each snack, you should opt for the Mix Goreng, which includes fried Wantan, Fishcake, and Seafood Tofu, along with a chilli dipping sauce. Though, we recommend you try out the Satay Ayam (chicken satay). You’ll get 6 sticks of satay, with each satay having generous chunks of chicken lathered in peanut sauce. The chicken is tender while its flavour pairs really well with the sweet, slightly spicy, and crunchy peanut sauce. Next up, the Nasi Ayam Penyet and Nasi Katok. What seems like similar styles of dishes, have very different yet delightful differences. The Ayam Penyet, literally translating to “flattened chicken”, is chicken that’s fried with a mix of herbs and spices. The tender chicken falls off the bones with ease. Yet, there’s a crunch to every bite as a generous amount of breadcrumbs is sprinkled on top of the chicken. This dish is served with rice along with deep fried tempeh, eggplants, and cucumber on the side.

On the other hand, the Nasi Katok also includes fried chicken along with a helping of yellow rice along with a papadom cracker and acar served on the side. The fried chicken for this dish however was dipped into a batter instead of herbs and spices, offering a different experience compared to the Ayam Penyet. The chicken is still soft and tender, while the skin adds an extra crunch to the texture. Both this dish and the Nasi Ayam Penyet are served with a tasty sambal. One of the two crowd favourites is the Kolo style noodles along with protein and a bowl of soup of your choice. Our Konlo noodles were topped with fried fish while we had a bowl of tomyam soup. The noodles Nur Dapur uses for their Kolo are the thin variety, offering an airy and springy texture. On its own, the noodles have a sweet and savoury flavour. However, the magic
happens when you splash a bit of the soup into the noodles. It adds a welcome kick to the dish as a whole, injecting some spice and sour into the mix of flavours. Rounding up the dish are the “crispy on the outside, soft on the inside” fried fish. If you’re looking for a noodle soup dish, look no further from Nur Dapur’s Kuching Laksa. Also one of the two favourites, you can choose between different types of noodles along with a pairing of chicken strips, prawns, or both topping the dish. We had the latter and weren’t disappointed at all. It won’t matter which noodle you choose because the main star of this dish is the laksa itself. It isn’t too spicy, providing just enough to tickle your taste buds. What sets this laksa against others is Nur Dapur’s use of evaporated milk instead of coconut milk, which makes the laksa soup super creamy. Plus, the prawns topping the dish are also very fresh as well. You can also mix in the provided sambal for an added savouriness too. We’ve talked about the two crowd favourites, let’s talk about mine next. The Pad Kra Pao is rice topped with sunny side up egg and a special ground beef or chicken cooked in homemade sweet sauce and chilli peppers. While it looks unassuming from a glance, seeing the chopped and whole chilli peppers gives a hint of what to expect. On first taste, the sweetness of the sauce was indeed inviting. As expected, the spice soon kicked in. However, I wasn’t able to stop myself from continuing to enjoy it. The basil mixed into the dish provided me with a subtle yet curious flavour that is alluringly good. This is comfort food material, if I do say so myself. Nur Dapur also has desserts to wash down the spices. You can opt for the Ais Kacang Campur, Ais Kacang Cendol, or Laici Kang. The latter is a refreshing bowl of lychees, chia seeds, grass jelly, and barley served on top of crushed ice. It’ll surely cool you down on a hot sunny day.
