EDITOR’S NOTE

EDITORIAL TEAM Hello Breeze readers, October issue is where we celebrate efforts to innovate Sabah thanks to our local community of passionate individuals and groups. In Personality, we highlight two of them; Viviantie Sarjuni of Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre and Arthur Kent Raymond of Kinabalu Coders. Working behind the scenes, both of them have been pivotal in pushing forward the process of innovating Sabah for many years.

Beautiful artwork of our personalities Arthur Kent Raymond and Viviantie Sarjuni by our local artist LukisTulis.

Nowadays we are no stranger to drones. Even though drone operators are growing more in numbers, the expertise on operating one on a higher level though is not something that is widespread. In Feature, we celebrate the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between KKIP Aerospace Training Centre (KATC) and experts through Mega Aerospace Centre that will help train a new group of drone experts that will also help increase and improve Sabah’s productivity and economic growth.

Innovation doesn’t just happen in the world of tech but also in food and arts. In Restaurant Review, we feature Bobo Restaurant & Cafe. More than meets the eye, the outlet is more than just a good place to eat, drink and have a good time. They also make quite an effort to introduce a variety of creative inspiring dishes not just through their menu but also events. On the arts side of things, check out The Art Attic in Destination. It is a new centre that features beautiful art pieces, clothing brands, furniture, and even a cafe. All this produced by our local artisans who are always pushing forward to introduce something new and inspiring. Do read the rest of our interesting pages that we hope will educate or inspire you. Happy October!

Among those who witnessed the launching were Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) Chief Executive Officer Mahadzi Aziz, Studio Ace Production Chief Executive Officer Sin Chun Hou @ Geoffrey, Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation Sabah Permanent Secretary Jasmine Teo, and Toon Boom representatives. SCENIC General Manager, Viviantie Sarjuni, spoke on navigating SCENIC not as merely organizing programs for everyone but also measuring the effectiveness of a program over time. It also takes an understanding of the talent, landscape, and industry in Sabah. She explained the 13 main strategies and 26 initiatives that involve talent development, researching new technologies, and innovation that will help propel Sabah’s economy. “We hope to see these initiatives succeed for Sabahans through the collaboration with multiple parties as the development of a multi-cultural state such as Sabah is quite different compared to other states and is not an easy task”, Viviantie added.

Sabah's future in drone technology

D

rones are becoming more prevalent these days not just for filming cool shots but also in many other industries as well. However, in order to get the best out of them, an operator must be skilled and precise to man such machines. For such a new type of technology, there are not many out there that have mastered the art of drone flying. With recent development, however, Sabahans will be pleased to know that many of us will have a chance to do so in the near future. Drones and unmanned aircraft aren’t really new. For years now, the military have been using them to monitor certain areas from a safe distance. Well those were drones used by the military, because commercial drones have become a common sight these days. We used to be in awe when we saw someone operating one out in the open. Now they’re used in a lot of industries. Photographers and videographers use them to capture beautiful landscapes and moments. Land surveyors would use them to cover a large area while rescuers would implement them when searching for a missing person in hard to reach spots. That’s why it’s important for the drone operator to know what they’re doing. A recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between KKIP Aerospace Training Centre (KATC) and experts through Mega Aerospace Centre will not only help train a new group of experts but also help increase and improve Sabah’s productivity and economic growth. The collaboration between KATC, Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (SCENIC), and Aerodyne Group will see relevant stakeholders applying drone technology.

10

KATC hopes to be a well-known training centre on technical parts related to aircrafts, unmanned vehicles or drones in Sabah. Expectations are high for this initiative to build quality and the best human capital, where the certifications given can be recognised and utilised by any domestic or international industry wishing to implement drone technology and manpower. Datuk Dr. Joachim Gunsalam, Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, said the focus on human capital development and well-being of Sabahans is one of the key elements in the Sabah Maju Jaya Blueprint. Being the Sabah Industrial Development Minister, he added that the Industrial Development Ministry is committed to support companies that plan to upgrade the Sabahan workforce into becoming management teams in the future.

Sabahans should also lookout for a complete training campus and facilities as KATC Chief Executive Officer, Aminuddin Zakaria, believes it would prepare more skilled professional technicians for future manpower. The possibility of building drone runways in the open space within the KATC facility should also be anticipated. The collaboration is certainly an exciting start of a new chapter in Sabah’s technological landscape. Aerodyne, the largest dronebased enterprise solutions provider in the world, is planning to bring its core technologies and create a strong market presence here in Sabah. They aim to improve and support the digital transformation of local industries such as precision agriculture, geospatial surveillance, port management, and project monitoring among other industries.

Meanwhile, SCENIC sees the next two years as an important phase in the collaboration. They will focus on the partnership between themselves, Aerodyne, and KATC to provide the needed expertise for industries as well as working together to design, develop, and deliver unmanned aerial vehicles. Viviantie Sarjuni, SCENIC general manager, says that SCENIC together with KATC will explore and support Aerodyne in terms of regional market expansion, utilising the Centre of Excellence and pursuing other potential collaborations, opportunities, engagements, events, and coordination in Sabah. So, what does this mean for Sabah? Well, to put it simply, we will certainly see a big boom of drone expertise from our state, not just in terms of operating them but also in research and repair. Plus, with Aerodyne expanding their market here, it would bring to many more uses of drones in our local industries. This is a huge step in the right direction to improve the Sabahan way of life. It might even lead to more efficient processes when it comes to our daily activities. Case in point, Amazon using drones to deliver parcels to offices and homes safely.

ess Joel Moriga, another uprising singer-songwriter that we should look out for. Not only can he sing, but he also used to be a drummer back in his uni days. Jess started to embark on his journey in the music industry in 2019 with the help and encouragement of J.Pablo and Hezron Diman. True that Jess is still fresh in the music industry, but within just 2 years he has produced a couple of singles that caught locals’ attention. To this date, Jess has released 3 singles which are ‘Hilang’, ‘Yang Satu’ featuring DonlayZ, and lastly ‘Indah Bersama’. When writing, Jess said the lyrics for these songs are based on a real-life experience that he saw in social media. Who would have thought a sappy teenage breakup story could produce such meaningful songs. Currently, Jess is preparing a collaboration project with Einstein Majanil and Hezron Diman. He is also partnering up with J.Pablo in producing a lofi jazz song for a new artist in Sabah Akinasoto. When we asked Jess what his proudest achievements as a singer were, he said that he felt proud when he reached the final stage of Anugerah Juara Lagu Carta Lagu Artist Sabah conducted by RTM Sabah. Plus, with his second single ‘Yang Satu’ featuring DonLayZ was also listed in Carta Lagu Mingguan by Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) back in 2020. Clearly, Jess’ talent has caught the eyes of our neighbouring country as well. Aside from singing, Jess also has his own podcast called ‘Cakap Cakap Podcast’ that is also joined by a friend of his, Ag Azman aka Man. Online gatherings in gather town

O

nline video conferences have obviously been a thing these past few years. There’s Zoom, Google Meet, and even the ever famous Skype. All these programs offer pretty much the same experience, with only a few differences here and there. Honestly, it does get boring sometimes. However, this is where Gather Town comes in a fresh take to virtual meetups. From afar, Gather Town looks like an old pixel RPG (Role Playing Game). The application allows users to have one-on-one meetings or conferences. It simulates a whole space for users to mingle with friends and family safely through the comfort of their own homes. Users can create and customize their personal avatars to express their individuality. The avatars aren’t the only customizable items in this program. Users can also customize the space for a better environment to mingle in. There were multiple rooms and areas to hold meetings and have conversations with friends or colleagues in the space we’ve tested. The coolest part is that users are only allowed to talk and listen to their respective conversations in the specified areas. This means that if another user isn’t in such areas, they won’t be able to listen in on your conversations and vice versa.

by Noel Jinguli Image | Gather Town

14

This is a great program when you work from home but still need fast access to colleagues without needing to give them a call. It still has all the basic functions of a video conferencing program like screen sharing to easily show coworkers the issue that needs to be solved or a presentation with your whole team. The mic and video features are the same, enabling you to turn them off when you need to. You can also share your screen with others for presentations. Gather Town is a great program when you need to be “in your office” but still working from home or organizing an online party. It works well with multiple users who each need space for conversations without interfering with others in the same space. However, you do need to pay subscription fees to make full use of all the features. There is an option to use it for free but you can only invite 25 users. The payment goes upto 7USD per month, which is about RM28, but you’ll get the full access for the program. Visit www.gather.town for more information.

Witness The Changes

ECO NEWS

uring the recent downpour in the Penampang and Kota Kinabalu areas, we’ve seen one of the worst flash floods in recent years. It has affected rural and urban areas alike, causing an array of damage in its wake. It’s certainly heartbreaking to think about those who have lost their homes to the flood and landslides, especially people who’ve lost their families. The question is, could this have been prevented?

I’m not saying the project is the sole cause of climate change and floods, as many other things that are factored in. What I’m saying is, we need to really put things into perspective when it comes to planning and managing developments. From what I’ve witnessed developers tend to overlook the effects a project does on the surrounding area or environment. This has resulted in many issues that directly and indirectly affect us and nature.

Well, it's certainly hard to say. On the one hand, people would believe that the weather is an act of God, and we can’t really do much. On the other hand, these random rains and storms result from of climate change and global warming. If you’ve noticed, we’ve been experiencing a lot more rain these days. When it rains, it certainly pours because on the other side of the spectrum, we’d experience droughts and hot weather for weeks on end. We used to be able to predict and experience when the rainy season would come. Now, the weather has become predictably unpredictable.

Taking it back to the beginning, the floods and landslides are proof that what we’re doing affects our environment terribly. The thing is, there will always be a list of pros and cons when it comes to development and the environment. As of now, there isn’t a sure solution to every problem we have and will face.

What’s been said too much yet isn’t said enough is why climate change is happening. In our current situation, the constant development that’s happening around us is a factor. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against developing our state, but you can’t deny the amount of work we’ve done has destroyed a significant amount of the nature around us. Trees have been cut down, and land has been stripped of its greenery. The lack of proper irrigation might’ve also contributed to the floodwaters rising and flowing in nearby villages instead of proper channels.

Rising Phoenixes

B

ack in the ’90s, Japan gave the world iconic sports cars that look good, drive fast and are reasonably priced. They’ve been the dream cars of many and have even replaced the classic Italian supercar posters off the wall. However, since the early 2000s, Japanese manufacturers have slowly but surely discontinued their sports cars indefinitely. Recently though, fans have received good news as brands such as Nissan and Toyota are bringing back coveted names in the Japanese automotive industry.

Nissan has finally updated the Z line of cars with the Nissan Z. Toyota has done it a few years earlier with the GT86, but they’ve since updated it with the GR86. Plus, they’ve also reintroduced the world with the ever-popular Supra, with mixed reception, that is. Speaking of which, Honda’s NSX also got fans feeling mixed with the hybrid V6 when they updated it recently. I sure hope people will be more merciful towards the rumored Integra when it gets introduced. It certainly has and will be, an exciting time for Japanese sports car fans alike.

Before that, let’s just talk about why manufacturers discontinued these cars in the first place. First of all, these manufacturers first and foremost need to make money, and most sports cars don’t do it for them. Contrary to popular belief, even if a car is well-known among enthusiasts, the mass customer base isn’t interested in sports cars. That’s why manufacturers are currently focussing on family cars and crossovers because that’s what customers want. Mitsubishi has received a lot of flack after they decided to convert the Lancer nameplate for upcoming crossovers.

So, what should we expect next? For now, there isn't any news as to when the GT-R will be updated. Plus, who knows if any of these recent releases would entice Mazda to launch an RX-7. What’s for sure is, there is a lot of excitement from Japanese car manufacturers to see what will come next.

I’m sure there are many of us who miss the Lancer, Supra, “AE86”, FairladyZ, or even the RX-7. What happened? Well, as I said, some were discontinued, some turned into something else, while others have gone on un-updated by the respective manufacturers. Well, this seems to have changed in recent years as manufacturers have had changes of heart. Well, at least two of them have. Toyota and Nissan have recently released modern versions of their old sports cars.

Personality

Innovating Sabah

I

nnovation is key to developing the world around us. We usually think that coming up with something new is how we progressed through the years, which is half true. Just look at the telephone or computer. Of course, such devices needed to be invented at first but now after so many innovations, we can fit those two devices, and more, in our pockets. Though technology isn’t the only innovation we need, sometimes we need to innovate our communities as well. This is where our two personalities come in, two of the many people working their best to innovate and improve Sabah for the better.

Viviantie Sarjuni

Viviantie hails from Beaufort but grew up in Beluran and Sandakan. She moved to Kuala Lumpur for job opportunities but came back in 2020 to set up a government initiative called SCENIC (Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre). So, what is SCENIC? Well, as mentioned, it is a government initiative under the Ministry of Science and Technology. It’s mandated at accelerating industries in Sabah through technology, innovation, and creativity with various stakeholders in the ecosystem. SCENIC focuses on 3 pillars in implementing initiatives on the ground, which are Innovation Driven Entrepreneurship, Technology and Innovation, and Creative Chamber. In terms of building the high economy and accelerating industries in Sabah: i. Nurturing startups, creative talents, makers, innovators through inclusive capacity building initiatives; ii. Connecting globally competent talents to various stakeholders to help accelerate industries in Sabah; iii. Funnel the latest technology, innovation to increase productivity in the industries; iv. Collaborating with stakeholders in the ecosystem to create greater impact; v. Cultivating creative and innovative ecosystems in Sabah across all sectors. SCENIC was recently set to propel the Sabahan animation industry as it became Malaysia’s first Toon Boom Authorised Training Centre. Toon Boom is a Canadian-based innovative animation software used by world-class animation and major studios. The Simpsons, Rick and Morty, Klaus, and Bob’s Burgers are among the big production names that have used the software in their production process. SCENIC has also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Aerodyne Group and KKIP Aerospace Training Centre (KATC) to develop the unmanned aerial vehicle (drones) market in terms of manpower and product development in Sabah. SCENIC’s mandate is to cultivate more innovations from the grassroots that provide solutions to real-world problems and at the same time help boost our state economy through commercialisation. They hope to see more future innovations from Sabahans, especially when the centre is ready by February 2022. This place serves as a commonplace for everyone to come together to kickstart collaboration and get access to expertise in various fields. 22

Arthur Kent Raymond

Arthur was born and raised in Kota Kinabalu. He is part of the Persatuan Pengaturcara dan Pembina ICT Sabah, also known as Kinabalu Coders (KC). It is a coalition of leads, organisers, and volunteers from tech and maker-related communities and local industries. Kinabalu Coders provides a platform for its members to engage with each other; make technology accessible; share knowledge and collaborate on projects; and reach out to likeminded individuals and organisations all across Sabah. We are part of the grassroots and are 100% volunteers. KC’s biggest innovation isn’t entirely tech-related. They represent a neutral platform for exchanging ideas and problem-solving skills. Many of their activities are enabled by technology. They have provided a sense of connectedness across their collection of community members and government and non-government organisations. Their most visible projects are the Roboneo event and Smartspace KK. Roboneo is Malaysia’s longest-running public robotics competition, first held in 2014. Smartspace KK, on the other hand, is the first public maker space in East Malaysia. These projects are supported by the Sabah Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, and have become anchors to the maker communities and greater innovation ecosystem of the state. Put simply, Kinabalu Coders embodies a unique bottom-up approach to creativity and innovation. They empower individuals, with the principle that "rising tides raise all ships". Although the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) styled "maker" communities that makeup Kinabalu Coders are relatively small, they have a large and disruptive impact on the people and societies around them. Many of our members and friends take what they have learned and apply it to their own organisations. It is always satisfying to see these systems and processes become best practices in another NGO, company, or even government agency.

Arthur and KC believe that data will drive the future, as decisions will be made using data instead of educated guesses. However, the lack of consistent data, being part of a larger problem called “data culture”, will hinder progress. Growing and nurturing the practices that lead to a sound "data culture" is their next logical step, again from the bottom-up. This goes hand-in-hand with the maker ecosystem of Sabah, the people who are now using technology and code to build the sensors and data processing tools of tomorrow. So, if you’d like to know more about KC, don’t forget to visit their website or Facebook page. They also have long-running public projects on the internet and an open online public gathering called “Software Thursdays”.

ith recent hikes in stress and anxiety, sleep deprived is something more than just toss and turn at night, it leads to mental and physical health issues in a long run. Whether you are a midnight wolves, or morning lions, we need to sleep to set out body clocks right. An average person is expected to sleep at minimum 8 hours a day, but not everyone sleeps well in a sense to get its full rest. We can sometimes be rest less, insomnia happens or even sugar rush that will affect the sleeping cycle – of course when our brains are working in thoughts, it is also hard to enter deep sleep. The lack of sleep impacts hormones and physic and causes weight gain, as well as fatigue making it prone to burn outs and unproductive days.

meditation may not sound as easy as it is, a simple breathing in and out while you rest will also do the trick! NOTE YOUR TO-DO LIST FOR TOMORROW

REDUCE ANXIETY • TO Note your to-do

Self-reflect on the day and plan ahead for tomorrow will get you prepared and put that off the worry list while you turn off the lights. If necessary, keep the book next to your bedside for any impromptu left offs. But try to not think about tomorrow until the day comes. Well, at least not before you are going to bed. OUT CAFFEINE AFTER 6PM • CUT Cut out Caffeine after 6pm

While we may not be able to control the factors that interferes a good night sleep; but simple habits will allow the body to relax and at least, calm down on a hectic day. Here is a checklist to help prepare you for a comfortable sleep :

As much as a coffee addict you are or even a yumcha kaki – whether it is immune to you or yet to find out, we definitely recommend to avoid caffeine intake after 6pm for a better sleep. Our body processes in different time interval and we don’t want the caffeine to kick in around 10pm or even 12am either. So the way to go is a relaxing warm milk or a calming camomile tea if you’d prefer something light.

DIGITALS 1 HOUR PRIOR • STOP Stop digitals 1hour prior to sleepTO SLEEP

THE SLEEPING AND YOUR ROOM CLEAN • KEEPING Keeping the sleeping area AREA and your room clean

Blue light exposure from TV, mobile phones and electronics in general is a source of light that reduces production of hormones, melatonin that is essential to help in relaxation and deep sleep. This is because the Blue lights, tricks your brain into thinking its daytime.

Definitely no brainer to ensure your sleep environment and surroundings to be well sorted and comfortable for you. Having fresh air and comfy pillows and whether you sleep with cozy blankets all wrapped up in sushi style or not, getting the right temperature helps you sleep well too.

• MEDITATION Meditation

I’m sure we have passion driven workloads as well as neverending stress on our hands regardless, sleep should be utmost priority for your health. It’s the time our body resets and repairs for cell regenerations, or should we call it – for us to recharge.

With digitals out of the way, meditations and reflections will be able to calm your mind and prepare for sleep. Although

What is EmSlimSculpt?

E

mslimsculpt is a revolutionary non-invasive procedure that targets fat and strengthens muscle together. Emslimsculpt is an FDA-approved body contouring treatment that simultaneously burns fat and builds muscle for the abdomen. It is also the only FDA-approved non-surgical butt lift. Emslimsculpt uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) to trigger supramaximal contractions (the type that cannot be achieved by voluntary muscle action). Each 30 minutes is equivalent to 20,000 contractions. Because Emslimsculpt strengthens core muscles, hence, it could strengthen the individual’s back muscles and pelvic muscles. The strengthening of these muscles can help reduce the risk of lower back pain, poor posture, & overall body fatigue. In some women, Emslimsculpt has also shown to improve diastasis recti, a condition of abdominal muscle weakening and separation from pregnancy. Emslimsculpt is a comfortable procedure. You may feel some sensation similar to an intense abdominal or gluteal workout. Some individuals may experience mild and temporary muscle soreness the next day. It requires basically zero down time. You can return to your daily activities immediately after the Emslimsculpt session.

Watch out for dental trends

T

here are many trends these days that have become viral through social media. However, we need to understand that there are trends that are quite dangerous and can alter your body. This is especially prevalent with fashion trends concerning our teeth. Together with Dr. Sylvia from Phi Dental, let’s explore some trends that should be avoided or followed with care. Let’s just get one thing straight, most of the trends that will be mentioned are safe if you visit professional dentists who know what they’re doing. The danger that these trends impose is when it’s done by people who only claim to know what they’re doing and for much lower prices. Remember, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. These trends may come from social media influences. We’re talking about fake braces, non registered whitening products, and even gems for teeth. Some of these trends involve filing teeth down or using strong chemicals that may harm the teeth. Our teeth are composed of enamel. It helps protect the sensitive inner layer of the teeth from bacteria and plaque. When we lose this protective layer, we can’t replace or regenerate it. That’s why we should avoid using whitening products that are not registered. Fake braces administered by non-professionals can cause teeth to become wobbly and misaligned due to excessive force applied on the root and most of the time causing severe gum diseases. Sticking jewellery on teeth can also make it harder to clean and I think all of us know the consequences of unclean teeth.

by Noel Jinguli Image | Unsplash 26

So, what should you do when you are interested in one of these trends? Well, the best thing to do is visit your local professional dentist. Don’t hesitate to ask them the safety concerns of certain trends and if it’s appropriate for you. You can always get your teeth whitened or put on real braces that will certainly fix your teeth by dentists. Some even still provide services for gold crowns that actually protect your teeth rather than just fashion statements. At the end of the day, the best way to avoid subjecting you and your teeth to danger is to avoid trusting non-registered personnel who mainly work from their homes, hotels, and even in some beauty parlors. The damage to your teeth can always be avoided but they aren’t always reversible.

CULTURE - pAST AND FUTURE AND IT’S PLACE IN OUR LIVES

here are a couple of definitions of culture and both are accurate. One is about Human intellectual achievement, mostly connected to the arts. The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. “20th century popular culture”. The other is the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society. There are others to do with Petri dishes and mould, but let’s ignore them for the moment.

at all. Customs and ideas that come from a people’s past and present are worth hanging on to though, even if it is only from sentiment, or better still, to feel part of a group or a tribe. We all like being part of a tribe, and the customs and ideas within that tribe make it what it is.

Why should we keep either of the above? Well I think both are vital to be aware of and to encourage, and make sure they are developed and maintained. I played about on the internet a bit to find out more. The New Yorker blog was interesting:

Musical instruments played by indigenous people in Borneo may be simple and to the 21st century unsophisticated but they sing of the past, or history, of where they came from and for that reason I would strongly argue that instruments, traditional dress, religious beliefs all have a place. This identity thing again. Fast cars, international travel, technology now exist, and few people know nothing of them. But they too will be superseded by development; nobody would touch an Amstrad nowadays, but without them, perhaps progress toward the laptops we use today would have been slower, clunkier and certainly different. It’s worth having an example for us to see these days. Just like propeller planes, platform shoes, mobile telephones the size of bricks. And paintings, food, music and behaviour.

The critic Raymond Williams, in his souped-up dictionary, “Keywords,” writes that “culture” has three divergent meanings: there’s culture as a process of individual enrichment, as when we say that someone is “cultured” (in 1605, Francis Bacon wrote about “the culture and manurance of minds”); culture as a group’s “particular way of life,” as when we talk about French culture, company culture, or multiculturalism; and culture as an activity, pursued by means of the museums, concerts, books, and movies that might be encouraged by a Ministry of Culture (or covered on a blog like this one). These three senses of culture are actually quite different, and, Williams writes, they compete with one another. Each time we use the word “culture,” we incline toward one or another of its aspects: toward the “culture” that’s imbibed through osmosis or the “culture” that’s learned at museums, toward the “culture” that makes you a better a person or the “culture” that just inducts you into a group.’ I think we all like to think we are cultured, in that we are interested in higher activities (opera, theatre, music). I personally can’t get a handle on opera although I like some individual tunes. Couldn’t eat a whole one. I have been part of a team doing the South Asian quiz and I am learning that culture can be sooo soooo different. Questions about Manga and Pokemon for instance. Why would I bother to learn a lot about them, but they are undoubtedly part of youth culture. Or were. Times may have moved on. Today one category was Literary sequences, and one of the questions was answered by Game of Thrones - that to me, dear reader is a long, moneyspinning and frankly ill-written series which I couldn’t get into at all. It ain’t literature, in the old fashioned sense. But it has a place in our culture. That is one thing. The other is tradition, I think. Customs, ideas and social behaviour. The last changes - what was thought terribly rude 100 years ago, or even 10, now raises no eyebrows

by Sylvia Howe Image | Unsplash 30

We need an identity. And for a people, that is built on what has gone before.

Basically we have no need to dismiss the past, just because it is the past. Old fashioned does not have to be an insult. Past and future are both important, and the past and its contribution to the present deserves to be celebrated just as much as today’s sleek spaceship that allows billionaires to race each other into space.

Getting squidy with it

O

nce in a while, there comes a survival themed movie or game that gets everyone excited. The Hunger Games movie series and PUBG (Player Unknown's Battleground) are just a few examples of survival themed entertainment entities that swept the whole world by surprise. Heck, you could even consider the Fall Guys and Among Us games being part of this fascination on survival themed games. Recently though, there has been a lot of talk about Squid Game, a Korean drama series that pits desperate people against each other. If you've been living under a rock, Squid Game is a Korean drama that has seen a sudden popularity jump when it first aired on Netflix in September of 2021. It's set in an alternate reality where the desperate and bankrupt compete against each other for a huge sum of money. The only catch is they need to be the last one alive to win. It's a very thrilling yet graphic show that has captured the attention of millions around the world. It has become the first Korean series to top Netflix's Top 10 weekly charts. It even reached No.1 in 90 countries, including the UK and the US.

Pop Culture

Personally, I enjoy seeing memes people have made with some scenes from the show. The best one yet would be the inclusion of the shape of Mount Kinabalu into one of the games of the show. Even the masks of characters have been compared with certain video game consoles. The weirdest thing is how some companies are daring enough to make memes that associate them with the graphic show. It just goes to show how we just jump to the current best thing to get our names out there. Despite all the memes, I really do recommend everyone to check this show out. Not just for entertainment but also as a social commentary that we should at least stop and think about once in a while.

So, how big has Squid Game become? Well, individuals and companies are now scrambling to implement their own twists to the show. Users of Roblox, an interactive user based video game, have already made their own game modes based on the show. Filter developers for social media sites such as Instagram have made Squid Game filters for every user to enjoy.

he Alchemist’s Cafe is back on our radar as they’ve recently moved to somewhere closer to home. With the change of view, there also comes a slight change in the menu and direction. Currently located in Damai, they are currently only open for takeaways and no dine-ins. Although the menu has downsized a bit, they still offer the same quality of food and beverages. Their assortment of literal home-brewed coffee will put that extra pep in your step for all types of weather. Personally, I’ve always loved the Espresso Tonic, a tall refreshing glass of coffee mixed with strawberry jam and tonic water. They also offer pastries and snacks such as their classic homemade Han Chim Piang, tarts, and even onigiri made by local businesses. The Alchemist’s Cafe suggests everyone follow their social media channels as they frequently put up polls to ask suggestions from their customers. Based on recent polls, expect healthy meal preps and grilled cheese sandwiches to be added to their future menu. This is their main aim for the cafe, providing a community-centered cafe and bringing fresh coffee closer to home. And one last secret for all the Breeze readers out there, if you regularly visit and get your dose of coffee from The Alchemist’s Cafe, you can expect some “perks” coming your way.

restaurant review

behind the blocks of hustle-bustle Plaza H idden 333, BOBO’s name is not new in the KK food

scene. With their recent course meal Fun Dining dinein event, the café restaurant impresses customers with culinary visuals as well as impactful tastebuds on the menu items. Started in 2020, during the pandemic, the owner Nathanael Bony returned home after a long exploration in the culinary industry since 2010. Aside from being a trainer educator in the F&B scene in South East Asia under APCA Malaysia, he was also the founding team of Pavillion group restaurant team - in Kuala Lumpur! Nathanael’s record in culinary experience is quite exciting with working experience at 2 Michelin-star restaurant, Le Parc by Franck Putelat in France. The café restaurant has a simple yet cozy interior which has a darker tone but is still well furnished for that cozy gathering session. Open kitchen and coffee 38

concept to view chefs and baristas in action. Personally, chicken is not your regular dish where you’d choose in a dine-in café; when BOBO’s Signature menu, Pollo Alla Diavola – also better known as Devil’s Style Half Chicken was highlighted as their bestseller and recommended mains, there was definitely hints of curiosity towards the whole menu and excitement to what it has to offer. But Why? Apparently, this signature chicken menu is very special to Nathanael, as it was his debut dish and one that has followed him around the world throughout his culinary adventures. Flavourful and marinated with herbs and spices, the half chicken was tender and flavourful in every bite yet still juicy and not too dry. But I would say the chicken gravy was the major lightbulb to the tasting among the plate! It was unpredictably familiar but also gives off a new kind of flavour to the palate; until today, the gravy for the signature chicken left me reminiscing for more.

Pollo Alla Diavola

Signature Soft Shell Crab & Salted Egg Pasta

Spaghetti Vongole

Deep Fried Calamari Rings

Rasberry Cheese tart

Smoked Salmon Salad

Portion wise is big with sides of salads and potatoes. Signature Soft Shell Crab with Salted Egg Pasta is another of their signature dish, creamy salted egg sauce coats the spaghetti nicely with a good balance of flavour. The sauce was well paired with tobiko served with crispy deep-fried soft shell crab for that extra texture. A salted egg fan favourite for sure! However, Aglio Olio styled pasta heavily rely on the flavour of the overall dish as they are drier compared to cream-based pasta; I thoroughly enjoyed the Vongole as the clams were generous and the clam stock was well blended, ensuring every bite was still flavourful; again – Bobo’s signature mains would have to be their heavy spice and herb flavours that leaves a great impactful taste after the meal. Deep-Fried Calamari Rings served with Curry leaves aioli and curry leaf crisps are fried to perfection and crispy even after cool down; The calamari rings are highly recommended to try out while you wait for the mains and best paired with their Flavoured kombucha drink which is refreshing yet healthy for your guts, let’s not forget it is also brewed in-house!

Rasberry Cheese tart with an almond-based crust; the tart was rich with a nice balance of sour from the raspberry compote. Their Basque burnt cheesecake is definitely to share as portion wise is big with and an alternative choice of Matcha which has its fair hint of bittersweet for that authentic matcha lovers.
