THE BEAN: Where Coffee Meets Comfort

THE BEAN CAFE LOUNGE - Flagship Outlet at Lido Plaza

C

offee lovers have found their haven in Sabah, a cafe called – THE BEAN. Established in 2016, this charming cafe has been brewing more than just coffee; it’s been crafting an experience that goes beyond your ordinary coffee shop visit. The Birth of a Haven When you step into THE BEAN, you’re not just entering a cafe; you’re entering a sanctuary for the senses. The idea behind THE BEAN is simple but profound: to provide the most comfortable experience possible for cafe lovers. It’s a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and find solace in the aromatic embrace of freshly brewed beverages. The founder’s passion goes beyond the coffee beans; it’s about creating an experience that lingers long after your last sip. With this philosophy in mind, THE BEAN is on a perpetual journey of improvement, adaptation, and creation. It’s more than just good coffee; it’s about making the right place for coffee and cafe lovers to hang out. A Taste of Sabah With eight outlets spread across Sabah, THE BEAN has become a familiar name for locals and tourists alike. The flagship store at Lido Plaza is where it all began, but you can find THE BEAN’s warm embrace in various locations, from Gaya Street to Parklane City Benoni in Papar. And if you’re in Lahad Datu, keep an eye out because there’s a new spot coming soon.

10

The BEAN EXPRESS: Simplifying Coffee Culture But THE BEAN didn’t stop there. They realised that there was a need for a simpler, more accessible coffee house experience, and so, THE BEAN EXPRESS, or TBX, was born. TBX is all about making coffee culture easy to explore and enjoy. The concept is clear – accessible, affordable, and inviting for those eager to learn about coffee. Step into a TBX outlet, and you’ll immediately notice the simplicity of the interior. The design is intentional; it’s meant to help you relax your mind and heart after a busy day or in a hectic environment. Some outlets, like Damai Point, even have a special area exclusively for TBX Members to rest and rejuvenate, making it a perfect stop for a quick breather after lunch or a long day. Setting Itself Apart What makes THE BEAN stand out from the crowd? It’s not just the quality of their coffee or the comforting atmosphere; it’s their unique approach to business. They believe in the importance of sustaining a cafe business, which is often the real challenge. While anyone can start a cafe with enough funds, ensuring its longevity is a different story altogether. At THE BEAN, the emphasis is on the customer experience and creating a space that’s perfect for remote work or small group meetings. The layout and facilities are carefully planned to cater

THE BEAN EXPRESS - Bandar Utama IJM, Sandakan

A Sip of Success When you visit THE BEAN, there are a few must-try items on the menu. One standout is the Custard Butter Toast, a delightful creation from the founder’s mother, introduced in 2017. It’s a signature item that has captured the hearts and taste buds of countless customers. And, of course, there’s the standard latte, a top seller that boasts a smooth aftertaste. It’s brewed using THE BEAN’s very own “X105 Houseblend,” a testament to their commitment to quality and flavour. THE BEAN isn’t just a coffee shop; it’s a retreat, a place where coffee enthusiasts can find solace and community. With its commitment to comfort, simplicity, and sustainability, it has carved a unique niche in the world of cafes.

THE BEAN EXPRESS - Kubota Sentral, Tawau

So, whether you’re in Sabah or planning a visit, make sure to stop by one of THE BEAN’s eight outlets. Take a moment to savour the Custard Butter Toast, sip on a velvety latte, and immerse yourself in the tranquil atmosphere. EGO: FINDING SOLACE THROUGH MUSIC

music

Debuting ‘Ruang Leka’ Unveiling ‘Ruang Leka’ to the world has been a cathartic experience for Sharinazmi. The positive responses have warmed his heart, and he hopes the song offers comfort and a path to healing for anyone who listens. Inspirations Sharinazmi draws his greatest inspiration from his mother, a testament to the profound impact of familial support and love on an artist’s journey. From Dance to Music Transitioning from dancing to music was surprisingly smooth for Sharinazmi. Both mediums allowed him to express himself artistically. While dance conveyed his emotions through movements, music became the vessel for his feelings through lyrics and melody.

I

n the realm of artistic self-expression, one name has recently taken the stage with a story that resonates with the soul Ego. Born Mohd Sharinazmi bin Sarudin, 31, in the picturesque town of Labuan, this multifaceted artist has emerged as a beacon of hope and healing through his music.

Ego’s mantra, “RUANG LEKA, UBAT BUAT JIWA-JIWA YANG TERLUKA,” echoes the heart of his artistic mission - to heal wounded souls through the power of music. In Ego’s tale, we find not just an artist but a healer, whose journey from despair to redemption resonates with all who seek solace in the universal language of music. Check on Ego and “Ruang Leka” on: MalasEgo Music @malasego @malas_ego

The Birth of ‘Ego’ “Ego” is more than just a stage name; it’s a profound embodiment of self-discovery. During the challenging times of the Movement Control Order (MCO), Sharinazmi found solace in creating music under the moniker Ego. Although he had another stage name, Ego felt like an extension of himself. It was after writing the song ‘Ruang Leka’ that the name truly stuck. While society often perceives ego negatively, for Sharinazmi, “Ego humbles me as a person.” A Journey to ‘Ruang Leka’ Sharinazmi’s artistic journey is a tapestry woven with diverse threads. A dancer, choreographer, graffiti artist, and rapper with Bad The Hood, he’s always been drawn to the world of arts and performance. ‘Ruang Leka’ marked his debut as Ego. The Tale Behind ‘Ruang Leka’ ‘Ruang Leka’ was born during Sharinazmi’s darkest hours, battling depression and anxiety. He stumbled upon an instrumental track on YouTube, and the words poured forth. The song delves into his preoccupation with the world, chasing the unnecessary and uncertain while neglecting self-care. ‘Ruang Leka’ became a gift to himself, an act of forgiveness for the self-neglect he had endured.

Fujifilm’s GFX 100 II

F

ujifilm are best known for their retro-looking cameras since the release of the original X-T1. Beautiful cameras along with beautifully rendered pictures. One of the best brands out there. Nah, I’m just joking. Although I am biassed since I’m a Fuji user, I do know there are still flaws here and there. But this hasn’t stopped me from drooling over their equipment, and their newest offering is something to drool over. The Fujifilm GFX 100 II (GFX100II), is the latest camera body from Fuji’s medium format line. Medium format cameras typically have sensors that are 1.7 times the size of full frame sensors, which in turn are 36 times bigger compared to our typical smartphone camera sensor. So you can only imagine how big the 102 Megapixel sensor is on the GFX100II. It’s able to capture more details from the scene.

For the GFX100II, Fuji added a new simulation called Reala Ace for faithful colour reproduction with hard tonalities Other features to look out for are the video capabilities and subject tracking improvements. The GFX100II can shoot up to 8K 30p videos, making this a hybrid powerhouse. Tracking your subjects can now be done with just a touch of the screen. The camera is even capable of sticking to the subject even in situations with multiple subjects in the frame. Another cool addition is the ability to attach an optional fan to the body, helping keep the camera’s temperature in check. You can also hook up an external SSD via USB-C to directly record your shots to it.

The biggest improvement for the GFX line is the pairing of the already stacked sensor with Fuji’s X-Processor 5. This allows for faster readout speeds and achieves 8fps (frame per second). 8fps might not seem much, but medium format cameras aren’t usually designed to shoot at high speeds, so having more than 3fps is certainly a big deal for sports or wildlife photographers. Auto-focus has also improved thanks to the processor. Not only is it more accurate compared to the GFX100II’s predecessor, it’s now able to detect faces, eyes, animals, bikes, cars, airplanes, and even trains. So whatever subject you’ll be taking pictures of, you’ll definitely nail the focus every single time. Fuji is famous for their film simulations, “filters” that mimic the colours of old school film. You can either create your own simulations or use the preset ones that are baked into the camera.

SOSODIKON HILL

I

n only 10 minutes, you can conquer a peak that is higher than the highest mountain of Johor, Penang, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, and Perlis States. You can do so by climbing Sosodikon Hill in Kundasang, Sabah and enjoy the rewarding view.

Sosodikon Hill is about 98 Kilometres from Kota Kinabalu City and quite accessible. You will be given a pass card after you pay the entrance fee, then you can start climbing the hill. No guide is required.

At an elevation of about 1,300 Metres (4,265 ft), Kundasang is the highest town of Malaysia. Kundasang is also the closest town to Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain of Malaysia, and only 6 kilometres away from Kinabalu National Park, the second UNESCO Global Geopark of Malaysia. Coupled with cooling weather, this highland town is a popular vacation spot for local and foreign tourists.

The following is the entrance fee per person in Malaysian Ringgit: • Malaysian Adult (13 years old and above): RM5.00 • Malaysian Child (7-12 years old): RM3.00 • Foreigner Adult: RM10.00 • Foreigner Child: RM5.00 • Free admission for children 6 years old and below

The altitude of Sosodikon Hill is 1,465 Metres (4,806 ft) above sea level. Sounds really tall right? Actually, if measured from its foothill, Sosodikon Hill is only about 70 Metres (230 ft) tall. Nevertheless, its peak allows you to have a beautiful panoramic view of Mount Kinabalu and Kundasang Valley. Sosodikon means “a place for laying traps” in Dusun language. When Sosodikon Hill was covered by thick forest in the past, the villagers frequently set traps there to hunt for wildlife such as deer and birds. Is Sosodikon Hill worth a visit? Yes, if you love to take some beautiful photos of Mount Kinabalu and Kundasang Valley. The hike to the top of the hill is easy and takes less than 15 minutes. However, you are advised to reach the peak before 8am, the time Mount Kinabalu is still visible. On most days, Mount Kinabalu would be covered by dense clouds after 9am. If it’s misty or raining, climbing Sosodikon Hill may not be worth your time. 18

The 300-metre trail to the peak is a well trodden soil path. Though it’s an easy short hike, you may walk slowly to enjoy the view. There are pretty flowers and decorations along the way. The ending point is a colourful wooden platform with a boardwalk on the highest point, where you can have a 360° view of Kundasang Valley under the majestic Mount Kinabalu. For more information, go to sosodikonhill.com.

Team Play with Dream’s Action for Climate Justice - UBUNTU

UBUNTU (I am because we are)” and “How can I be happy if my friends are sad?” were the two phrases that instantly motivated me to act for climate justice as a youth advocate and the Artistic Director of Team Play with Dream. Team Play with Dream was founded in 2016 by seven music and art class students in Kota Kinabalu under the mentorship of our director, Vidan Lee. We started our first Global Warming Project in 2018 after getting inspired by our youngest member, Harry, who was devastated that the polar bears were classified as vulnerable species due to climate change, primarily caused by humans. Leading up to 2023, the UBUNTU Project has successfully collected and donated RM17,700 (€3500) through organising various meaningful events. As you can presume, our actions emanate from using the most peaceful and beautiful forms that can move people’s hearts - art and music. We strive to bring the best quality of music and art to KK by collaborating with professionals for locals to experience. More than 1000 individuals (including the audiences) from 8 countries with 46 organisations/schools and 22 professional artists joined us. “Activist vs. Bystander” Our humanity is suffering. Climate change and UBUNTU are about us; it’s about you, how you become us, and how we take action together. Not only for the environment, but for our safety, too. You may agree that action is required, but are you involved, or are you a vocal bystander like millions of others? Here’s what you need to know to participate in making a difference.

eet Chong Eng Khin, the creative force behind the thriving cafe business, THE BEAN. With a passion for entrepreneurship and an unwavering determination to turn dreams into reality, Khin’s journey is nothing short of inspiring.

Chong Eng Khin: Brewing Success in the Cafe World

CHONG ENG KHIN

From Dreamer to Entrepreneur BUILDING A BUSINESS EMPIRE Chong Eng Khin’s entrepreneurial spirit extends beyond THE BEAN. He is at the helm of several businesses, each catering to different niches. In addition to THE BEAN and THE BEAN EXPRESS, his cafe businesses, Khin also runs THE BEAN ACADEMY, offering coffee-making courses and barista training. KK BAKERY, bread bakery supplying to local supermarkets and grocery stores, while KIN LODGES provides student accommodations. PAPEL STUDIO specialises in sticker design and printing, and FILIA JAPAN creates handcrafted custommade rings made in Japan. Khin’s diverse portfolio reflects his dynamic approach to business.

C

hong Eng Khin’s story begins with a childhood dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur. However, academic struggles from primary school to college led many to doubt his aspirations. But Khin was determined to prove them wrong. “I always knew I wanted to make a difference in life,” he says, recalling the numerous discouraging comments about his academic performance. His unwavering persistence paid off. In early 2016, a unique opportunity presented itself when he stumbled upon a cafe for sale. Despite having no prior experience in the food and beverage industry, Khin decided to take the plunge. The first six months were a nightmare, but he was undeterred. He rebranded the cafe as THE BEAN and embarked on a mission to win back customers who had previously given it poor reviews. Khin went above and beyond, meeting past customers individually to persuade them to give his revamped cafe a chance. It was a challenging journey, but it laid the foundation for his future success. PASSION FOR TRAVEL AND INSPIRATION Khin’s journey to success wasn’t limited to the cafe business. He is an avid traveller, with a particular fondness for Australia and Japan. Australia holds a special place in his heart because it was where he spent his high school and university years. Japan, on the other hand, captivated him with its automotive and technological innovations, a passion that was fueled by his love for Japanese animation. Travelling the world opened Khin’s eyes to different cultures, culinary experiences, and cafe concepts. These global influences have played a significant role in shaping the unique character of THE BEAN. From Australia’s laid-back atmosphere to Japan’s attention to detail, each place left an indelible mark on Khin’s perspective.

A LEADERSHIP STYLE WITH A PERSONAL TOUCH Managing a team has been one of the most rewarding and challenging aspects of Khin’s entrepreneurial journey. He believes in building relationships with his staff to better understand and support them during difficult times. Flexibility is a key aspect of his leadership style, allowing employees to manage their time as long as they meet their professional commitments. Khin also emphasises patience, recognizing that everyone starts from scratch and makes mistakes along the way. He values dedication and commitment, traits that are essential for success in his team. BALANCING WORK AND PASSION In his free time, Khin finds solace in tidying his home office and gallery, a ritual that helps him maintain a calm and organised mind. However, his true passion lies in street photography, a hobby he indulges in during visits to his favourite cities, Perth and Tokyo. Khin’s love for photography takes on a meaningful twist as he annually uses his prints to raise funds for charity. The joy of combining his hobby with helping those in need is a testament to his altruistic spirit. THE BEANS’S FUTURE: EXPANDING HORIZONS Looking ahead, Khin has exciting plans for THE BEAN. He aims to strengthen the cafe’s membership program and upgrade existing outlets in 2024. Beyond Sabah, The Bean is set to make its mark internationally, with plans for the first overseas outlets in Perth, Australia, and Tokyo, Japan. Khin is grateful for the unwavering support of loyal customers, which has fueled The Bean’s growth and success. Chong Eng Khin’s journey from a dreamer to a successful entrepreneur is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and passion. His story reminds us that with unwavering dedication and a willingness to learn from every experience, dreams can indeed become reality. FINDING SERENITY IN SWEAT; HOW WORKING OUT CAN RELAX YOU

I

n our fast-paced, stress-filled lives, the quest for relaxation often leads us to various practices and techniques. One powerful, yet often overlooked, method to achieve tranquility is through regular exercise. Contrary to popular belief, working out doesn’t just pump up your muscles; it can also calm your mind and soothe your soul. In this article, we’ll explore how working out can be a powerful tool for relaxation. 1. STRESS REDUCTION Exercise triggers the release of endorphin, commonly known as “feel-good” hormones. These chemicals act as natural painkillers and mood elevators. Regular physical activity reduces the levels of stress hormones, like Cortisol, in the body. This reduction in stress hormones can lead to a profound sense of relaxation. 2. IMPROVED SLEEP One of the most common side effects of a stressful lifestyle is poor sleep. Exercise, especially when done earlier in the day, can improve the quality of your sleep. It helps regulate your circadian rhythm, making it easier for you to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. A well-rested body and mind are naturally more relaxed. 3. MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION Certain forms of exercise, like yoga and Tai Chi, encourage mindfulness and meditation. These practices focus on the connection between the mind and body, helping individuals become more aware of their physical sensations and emotions. This heightened awareness can lead to a profound sense of relaxation and inner peace. 4. REDUCING ANXIETY Regular physical activity has been shown to be an effective way to reduce anxiety symptoms. The rhythmic, repetitive movements in exercises like running or swimming can have a meditative quality, calming the mind and reducing feelings of anxiety. Additionally, exercise increases the production of GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps soothe anxiety. 5. SOCIAL INTERACTION Engaging in group workouts or team sports can provide a sense of social connection and support. Human interaction is a fundamental component of relaxation for many people, as it helps combat feelings of loneliness and isolation that can contribute to stress. 6. IMPROVED PHYSICAL HEALTH Physical health and mental well-being are closely connected. Knowing that you are taking care of your body through exercise can boost your confidence and reduce worry about health issues. This peace of mind contributes to a more relaxed state of being. In conclusion, working out is not just about building a strong body; it’s also a powerful way to relax your mind and 22

soothe your soul. Through stress reduction, improved sleep, mindfulness practices, anxiety reduction, social interaction, and better physical health, exercise offers a multifaceted approach to relaxation. So, next time you’re feeling stressed, consider trading your couch for a workout.

BENEFITS OF COFFEE AND TEA

T

HERE ARE NO HEALTH BENEFITS TO DRINKING TEA OR COFFEE. Okay, wait. That’s not entirely true. You’d expect that two of the most widely consumed beverages in the world have at least some kind of advantage over just plain water, right? Well, apart from flavour and caffeine, they do… kind of. Both coffee and tea have been integral to the history of humanity, from the coffeehouses that sparked the scientific revolution, to the impacts of tea on politics and trade around the world and throughout history. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean the consumption of caffeine is necessarily good for us – or is it?

reason that tea is seen as the healthier drink is because water has to be boiled to make it: before we figured out the importance of drinking clean, purified water, boiling water to make tea killed off many of the pathogens responsible for causing disease; you were more likely to get sick drinking plain water than tea. The caffeine content in tea does promote mental alertness and wakefulness, and some studies suggest that tea drinking may be a small protection against dementia or Alzheimer’s, but there is little conclusive evidence to say that tea does provide a significant benefit to our health.

The general consensus among scientists is that drinking coffee at normal doses (3-4 cups daily) is completely safe, and might even increase lifespan, even though we aren’t entirely sure whether a longer life is directly caused by drinking coffee. Recent studies have found that people who drink moderate amounts of coffee actually have lower rates of heart failure, and a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease. However, if you are someone with anxiety, the NHS does suggest avoiding caffeine as high doses may worsen anxious feelings. For some patients with anxiety, quitting coffee can bring a major improvement to mental health.

At the end of the day, whether you’re a coffee or tea drinker (or both, or neither!), the fact that your beverage of choice may not have any health benefits shouldn’t deter you from enjoying it. As long as you’re drinking enough plain water alongside, a few cups of joe every day is no biggie. After all, humanity probably wouldn’t have come so far without coffee and tea to help us along those sluggish days!

But what about tea? Surely this ancient drink lauded by all of humanity has to have some good to it. As it turns out, most scientific research is inconclusive on that front. A possible

Oral Hygiene Basics: First things first, never underestimate the power of brushing and flossing. Dental pros emphasise the importance of these routines. Brush your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and don’t forget to floss. This helps remove stains and plaque that love to hang around after your morning brew. Professional Whitening: If your teeth have already seen their fair share of coffee or tea, professional teeth whitening might be your secret weapon. Dental experts use special bleaching agents to brighten your smile and bring back that dazzling sparkle. Fluoride Treatments: Some dental practices offer fluoride treatments. These strengthen your enamel and make it more resilient against coffee and tea acids.

Dietary Wisdom: Your dentist might suggest reducing your coffee and tea intake or using a straw to minimise direct contact with your teeth. But don’t worry, they won’t take away your beloved beverages entirely! Custom Care: Dental experts tailor oral care plans to your specific needs. From toothbrush and toothpaste recommendations to the use of mouthwash, they’ve got you covered. Treatment When Needed: If you’ve got dental issues due to coffee and tea, like cavities or gum problems, don’t fret. With the guidance of dental experts, you can enjoy your daily cuppa while keeping your smile radiant. RANTS & RAVES

Coffee Choices? We got them

I

’m gonna be honest and not lie to you. It isn’t in my nature to write an article on a topic I barely know anything about. I mean how do you rant about something you aren’t passionate about? So I did some research, asked most of my coffee addict friends, questioned some hard core aficionados and looked at what we have to offer in Sabah and was pleasantly surprised by what I found. The coffee scene has grown and diversified in recent years. We’ve had more chain coffee places reach our shore. More serious ‘roasted bean’ drinkers set up shop to educate and tantalise the palates of like minded people. As for the classics that we proudly have in Sabah, I won’t mess with that.

all the oil or sugar you’ve just ingested. A shout-out to teh tarik for being perfection even though it isn’t coffee. We have artisanal coffee joints that take pride in having the right equipment to brew their coffee and they proudly source high quality beans from around the world or single origin coffee. These places can be a little intimidating if you don’t understand the lingo. But surely, and this is me hoping, their baristas are ever ready to bestow their knowledge onto coffee newbies like me to bring me to the dark side. On that note, a passionate coffee/bakery owner once convinced me to drink the ‘special’ coffee he had, insisting it was just right for me even after I told him I was not a coffee drinker. It wasn’t! Wish people would listen.

Personally, I know I’ve insulted many baristas when I ask them for a drink that barely has any coffee in it and my friends who love a strong cup of darkness shake their head in disappointment when I tell them my frappuccino loaded with whipped cream and caramel syrup is a coffee.

Then there are the chain coffee places which have something for everyone whether it be a strong cup of joe, a super sweet drink for the young ones or desserts and snacks for the nibblers. I’m hoping the people wanting to break into the coffee realm come up with better creations or a better selection of food…take note.

We have something for everyone in Sabah, if you are interested in local coffee, we’ve got you. Local coffee shops or kopitiams can be found easily. And for those of you who like a more contemporary, hip kopitiam, we’ve got that too. Keeping it aesthetically ole skool. I like these places cause the food is usually all the local favourites and frankly, having a hot bitter drink kills

Bottomline, we have choices.

Nespresso machines taking over morning rituals

S

ince its introduction to the “modern” world, coffee has always been enjoyed through all the ages. Of course, how people enjoy coffee has transitioned as years go by. First, people used to enjoy it as is, black. Then milk started to be added into coffee. Then people discovered the wonders of iced coffee. Well for many years now, coffee brands have introduced a new way to prepare and enjoy coffee, but has now risen to popularity. I’m talking about the single-serve coffee machine, or as I simply call it, Nespresso. Nespresso is a specific brand, of course, but it’s now synonymous with the machine we’re talking about today. There are many other brands that produce the same type of machine and the flavour pods, but Nespresso is arguably the biggest name out there. In the UK alone, there are approximately 4.8 million Nespresso users. As impressive as that fact sounds, another more impressive number is the 14 billion Nespresso pods each year. According to Nestle, the parent company of Nespresso, more than 400 Nespressos are consumed each second. So, what’s the big deal? Why are people raving about Nespresso machines? Well, for one, it’s just a convenient way to prepare coffee. You just turn the machine on, put the pod of your choice in, and just wait for your freshly brewed coffee to pour into your mug. The machine is compact, unlike the size of most espresso machines in cafes. They also offer no mess to worry about, and no long wait times. You also have a myriad of choices when it

POP CULTURE

comes to the pods. You can choose to have black coffee, espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, or flavours such as caramel, vanilla, and chocolate. Some brands even offer fun and “exotic” sounding flavours, so you’re sure to find something you truly like. With that said, there’s still a debate going around between Nespresso users and coffee aficionados who prefer brewing their coffee. One of the main arguments is the passionlessness of having your coffee made from Nespresso machines. There’s also the argument that the pods sold have less than favourable coffee grounds in them, producing bland and uninteresting cups of coffee. For me personally, as a non coffee drinker, I just find Nespresso machines and pods a bit too pricey. But what do I know, right? Whichever camp you sit in, you can’t deny that Nespresso, and the many other brands like it, have certainly taken over the morning rituals of millions of households. It just takes a simple concept, albeit with some time and patience, to create and take over a whole industry.

ello world! And Hello Pizza! There’s a new pizza place on the outskirts of town and the pizza they have is simply one of the best I’ve had. Located at the Curve 25 of Bukit Bantayan, Hello Pizza Sourdough Co. is like the hidden gem of pizza places in Kota Kinabalu. What makes their pizza different from other places is their handcrafted sourdough that’s been fermented for at least 48 hours to bring out the natural flavours. This makes their pizza base soft and fluffy. The same goes for the crust as well, as it’s light and airy throughout, making for a different pizza eating sensation as compared to others you can find around Kota Kinabalu. Making everything possible is the stone oven that Hello Pizza Sourdough Co. uses to bake their pizzas. Hello Pizza Sourdough Co. also serves sides, pasta, and desserts. We definitely recommend the Ham & Mushroom Truffle pasta and Fried Chicken Wings, along with a glass Strawberry Lemonade or Iced Matcha to compliment your meal. Image | Noel Jinguli

restaurant review

M

ad Ben is a restaurant located in Plaza 333 that specialises in Western dishes with a few fusion masterpieces sprinkled in the menu. They’ve been pleasing the Penampang crowd at their current spot since 2021, after moving from their previous lot at Gaya Street. Mad Ben is one of the favourite spots among the local Penampang diners to enjoy good food and good company. The restaurant lot is nice and cosy, accommodating to date nights, hangouts, and family dinners. They’ve recently undergone a minor renovation, now having brighter walls for a warmer ambience overall. Apart from the physical renovation, Mad Ben has also introduced a new Korean menu. This is part of their plans to change things up a few months at a time, to change palettes of diners once in a while. So, without further ado, let’s talk about the food! Starting off with their Cajun Chicken Boxing as the appetiser, we were definitely off to a good start of the meal. The Cajun spice used added the perfect balance of savoury, zesty, and hint of spicy flavours to the dish. It also helps that the chicken was cooked really well, being crispy on the outside, while tender and juicy on the inside. Mad Ben serves a list of pizzas for all tastes and preferences, but we had a chance to try their Cumin Lamb Pizza. The thin crust pizza is topped with tomatoes, chopped onions, cumin lamb, cheese, with a sprinkle of chives, on a base of tomato paste. Here, the tender cumin lamb is the star of the show, but it doesn’t

CRAVING FOR MADBEN

overpower the rest of the pizza. Mad Ben makes all their pizzas thin and light to accommodate the other dishes during your dine there. Next up is the Tiger Prawn Fried Rice. What seems like your standard fried rice will surprise you in more than one way. First off, you’ll be delighted that it incorporates very familiar and homely flavours. However, the addition of mushrooms adds a welcome earthiness to the dish. To top it all off, literally, are three massive tiger prawns which are certified fresh and juicy.

Popcorn Chicken Cheese Fondue

Burnt Cheesecake

Dark Chocolate Fondant

Avocado Milkshake

A fusion dish I really recommend you try is the Tom Yam Penne. The pasta is served al dente with tom yam sauce. The flavour is recognisably Asian, with the slight kick of the spiciness paired with a soft sourness to the dish. And just like any tom yam dish, it’s topped with seafood such as fish, prawns, squid, and mussels. Definitely something fresh to check out. I talked about Mad Ben’s new Korean menu earlier. From said menu, we had a chance to savour a dish that’s actually a twist from their regular menu. The Korean Popcorn Chicken Cheese Fondue incorporates Korean flavours with a western twist. Diners will have a choice between Soy Garlic, Sweet Chili, or Ghost Pepper sauce to top their popcorn chicken with. We were warned that the latter would be very spicy, so we opted for Soy Garlic and Sweet Chili instead. The Soy Garlic sauce is sweet and savoury while the Sweet Chili offers enough spice kick to our taste buds. What pulls everything together is the cheese fondue which includes 4 types of cheeses to balance the scent, flavour, and stretch of the cheese. Last but not least, we treated ourselves with two desserts, the Burnt Cheesecake with Berries Compote and Dark Chocolate Fondant. The homemade cheesecake was dense yet still soft on the tongue, having somewhat of subdued sweetness, which in this case is very nice. The chocolate fondant simply melts as soon as you cut it in half. The choice to use dark chocolate made it so you could enjoy the whole dessert without feeling guilty at the end of the experience. Mad Ben is one of the few “go to” restaurants me and my wife frequent for date nights. Apart from the meal the Breeze team enjoyed, I really recommend Mad Ben’s salads and steaks, which are simply *chef ’s kiss*. Mad Ben offers the perfect environment to enjoy the amazing meals.
