The Jumanji movies have always been films that could just about bring anyone together regardless of the time of year! This is the testament to its characters' charm, intriguing plot and irresistible action sequences. It is no wonder why this flick has been scheduled to be released during the holidays!

I Absolutely looking forward to this, Jumanji played a big part getting me interested in board games! When "Welcome to the jungle" came out, I couldn't have been more excited and accurately predicted (to myself) that the board game upgraded itself to become a video game (and gave myself a pat on the back).

Angus the Therapist: The Voice of Obscurity

Breeze (B): Hi Adam! Please introduce yourself to us. Adam (A): My name is Adam Ronald Angus. I’m 23 years old and I was born in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. B: How was the process like to be where you are right now pursuing this path as an artiste? A: I started rapping and I wallow into different types of music genre at the age of 15. Ever since I flew to Manila to pursue my degree in Psychology, that was where I expanded my music perspective, as well as meeting a handful of people that led me to strive forward. Being in the zone where people can appreciate your originality and give feedback about your content, in other words – is a zone where you feel belonged. As soon as I finished my degree, my friends were interested in starting Feel Good Entertainment. I'm currently signed to them and I’m also the creative director. Our aim is to promote a unique taste in genre from various Sabahan artistes. B: You mentioned that you studied Psychology, but how is that relevant to your current path on being an artiste? A: I was planning to take Music at first as a subject but I did not want to succumb to the complicated practical and technical process. To me, music triggers all sorts of emotions and so does psychology. Understanding the human behaviour and creating music out of our emotions does help to expand in one’s work – it helps to broaden certain perspectives and it depends on how one expresses it. B: Have you faced any challenges? If so, what were the challenges? A: A lot of struggling musicians will face lack of exposure due to conflict with following a trend and/or creating originality including myself. Art takes time to build and when it comes to music, it takes a lot of effort and collaboration to the satisfied content published. Even

orn in Kota Kinabalu of Land Below the Wind; 23-year-old Adam Ronald Angus, who is also professionally known as Angus The Therapist, is a rapper and music artiste that has been making waves in the Sabahan music industry – specifically the rap industry. Currently signed under Feel Good Entertainment, a local Sabahan entertainment record label, we sat down with Angus The Therapist to know all about the man’s journey as a music artiste and his thoughts about the local music industry.

though it's posted, there's always that voice in your head saying "I could've done it better.'' – the urge to create something that's ‘lit’ and similar-sounding like mainstream music. I feel like it's a betrayal to my musical identity in my case. In addition, the search for my own sound is also something that has been challenging. With the limited sources I have, I tend to have a tune and hum it in my phone, hoping that I have time to return to it. B: What are your inspirations and music influences? A: Just to name a few. In terms of art that influence my work, Quentin Tarantino is one of them as I always love to bring unpredictability, giving homage to something that he loves and putting it in his art and somehow bend the rules over in any sort of entertainment art. Eminem used to be my big influence but recently, artistes that influenced me are Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Donald Glover, Kota the Friend, and Yuna. B: Anything else you would like to add? A: I would like to share my thoughts about the entertainment industry in Malaysia. Based on my opinion, I think musicians and rising artistes should search for their music authenticity despite any genre they venture into. This comes by asking for guidance in developing it and listening to a lot of obscure artistes to build it. While the other part of the world appreciates their art, I solemnly believe that our own people are negligent towards our local artistes which is limiting the creative freedom an artiste could have. Please give local musicians a chance.

Podcasts: The Audio Talk Show

Teens used to listen to radio all the time during the days without internet. It wasn’t just because of music; we had our favorite DJs too. People often underestimate the power and reach of listening. The rise of video content thanks to YouTube initially made it seem like audio content was about to be made obsolete. At the time, it made sense because we assumed video was more interesting than audio. But it seems quite the contrary. Podcasts are basically online radio talk shows. With topics ranging from mainstream entertainment, science & tech, to philosophy. And instead of becoming obsolete, they’ve become one of the most coveted forms of infotainment around. It turns out that people like listening just as much as they like watching. I’ve consumed 3-hour podcasts while I work, exercise, travel, or just to relax and fill my head with ideas. Other than radio stations, I don’t see many Sabahans expand into podcasting. If you’re a local content creator who feels like venturing into new mediums of content creation, I suggest giving podcasts a try. You don’t need any fancy tools, you can just use your phone recorder to start. Find a topic you’d like to talk about and go at it.

Toojou Is Where Travel Meets Social

by Noel Jinguli Image | Various Sources

L

ooking for a place to stay that offers an environment like no other? Toojou should be on your radar than. Toojou, which a play on the word ‘tuju’, which means destination in Malay, provides its visitors with a peaceful and relaxing place to stay, hangout, and even do work. Seeing the mural on the side of the building, you just know Toojou offers something different compared to other hotels and hostels. Not only on the outside, by their staircase is also covered by murals, all painted by the talented local artistes in Kota Kinabalu. When you enter, you’ll immediately notice the slide in the middle of the café. Speaking of which, the Tamaha Café offers a wide range of drinks, from coffee to juice, that go well with the western and local dishes that it serves. The chill atmosphere of the café ensure visitors can enjoy their meal. When night comes, you can visit their rooftop Tamu Bar to hangout with friends with a few drinks in hand. The bar also has a balcony so you can sit and enjoy the beautiful view of the city nightlife. Their OPIS Coworking space is what mainly defers Toujou from other places. This is a space where you can do you work in a peaceful and quiet area. It provides you with facilities for either private or group discussions. At the back, there’s a pantry for you to brew your own coffee or tea. If that’s not enough, you can simply go to the café, accessible via the mural painted staircase or the slide. Toojou offers two types of rooms for visitors. Apart from the basic necessities, the private rooms for two have its own toilet and Bluetooth-speakers built in. The other type of room offered are dormitories for 4-8 people. Each person would have their own private bunk bed or capsule bed, complete with lights, storage space, and wall plugs for charging up devices. One thing the rooms have in common is the minimalist design. Toojou encourages their visitors to go out and socialize instead of staying in their rooms. That’s where their motto, “Travel Meets Social”, comes in. It certainly offers something different, but those differences offer visitors a unique yet relaxing experience.

To access the OPIS space, prices start at RM30. The rooms and dorms start at RM150 & RM 40 (per bed) respectively. For more info, visit www.toojou.com.

Going Green for the Holidays?

I

t’s official; it’s the end of the year. In the past twelve months, what did you do for the environment? Did you do something one-off that was big or did you do something small that is sustainable which you repeated over and over? So many of us make a big attempt in doing something for the environment and it made us feel good and we talked about it on social media or to our friends.

Geraldine Yong byby MB Enviro-Healers Image | Unsplash

Put everything in perspective. Do what you normally do but add an element of conservation. Make sure everyone recycles from your gatherings, don’t waste! Talk about doing green gatherings. Do something fun and different, get together with a group of friends during this holiday season and go out as a group with reusable bags and containers. A large group refusing straws or plastic containers will have a more profound effect on the seller, especially if you all refuse their disposable products. Even the big branded coffee houses don’t use their reusable cups anymore and I haven’t seen anyone complain about in on social media either. So, as we said before, make sure you post this “green outing” idea on social media.

To those of you in this category, we would like to thank you for being a catalyst. For doing “something” and telling others about it creates awareness. The louder your spoke about it, the better it is. Then there are those of you quietly plugging away, recycling your small bag of household items, switching off a light switch each time you left the room and didn’t post anything on Social Media or tell anyone else about what you did. We are equally pleased with all of you too. Sustainability has always been the key to Environmental success. Seeing as to how it is the Holiday Season with many of you celebrating Christmas and also bringing in the New Year, let’s try and explore some environmentally sustainable practices.

Gift Wrapping

Some have used newspapers or magazine pages. Some people have used leaves, used pieces of material and maybe some even recycle used wrapping paper. Some people use gift bags, which they hope the recipient will reuse. Whichever way you go, make sure you talk about your sustainable option to the recipient and blast away on social media.

Finally, for your New Year’s resolution, why don’t you resolve to bring back the good things that you used to do? Make what is old, new again. Isn’t that recycling? Make a resolution that is linked to someone else and keep each other honest to the promise. Compete with a friend to recycle and see who does more by the end of the year. Resolve to help family members, extended or in the same household, to start going green. We’re going to do it. Will you?

Party Time

Try a potluck party where everyone brings a dish in a reusable container from their homes and when the party is over, you can use your empty container to bring back someone else’s goodies. Try to make sure the host is not left with an abundance of food that they will have to throw out. If a host is taking on the responsibility, then consider sending the food to an animal shelter or a group that feeds stray animals. There is a bunch in Kota Kinabalu now and I am sure they could use the help.

Family Outings

Try to carpool. Carpooling saves on fuel, tires, parking and reduces traffic congestion but is also great for IRL communication to catch up with each other. Doesn’t that sound more meaningful? 22 | Breeze Magazine

Eliminate Acne Scar (Or Any Scar) With No Downtime

by Dr Hana Rose Image | Various Sources

With this, we are able to deliver heat deep into the dermis, optimizing the body’s wound-healing response and providing results that go far beyond the capacities of standard Microneedling. The 25 tiny gold needles create the mini-injuries common to Microneedling, which provoke a wound-healing response that leads to younger-looking skin. At the same time, the radiofrequency energy generates heat, which further stimulates the production of collagen and tightens the skin, giving you more dramatic results than conventional Microneedling with a treatment that’s both faster and safer.

B

eauty trends come and go, but there’s good reason to believe Microneedling is in it for the long run. As more and more people seek out minimally invasive treatments to repair their skin, we expect Microneedling to remain a staple in aesthetics. The main reason for this is pretty simple — it works. It works for a number of common skin concerns, and it does so with minimal or no downtime. True, some people may have trepidations when they first hear about Microneedling. The idea of tiny needles puncturing the skin at the same time does sound somewhat alarming. However, once people go a little deeper into the process, they not only understand the benefits, but they’re also eager to experience the benefits for themselves.

Microneedling: A Safe, Easy Treatment without Downtime The principle behind Microneedling is relatively simple. The tiny needles penetrate the skin, which creates micro-wounds underneath the skin. These wounds are so small, though, they’re not even noticeable after the procedure. In addition, a numbing cream is applied before the procedure so people don’t even notice the little punctures as they happen. The body, though, immediately springs into action, remodelling and building up collagen and elastin as it heals the wounds -replicating the stronger, more resilient skin we enjoyed when we were younger.

In addition to combining RF with laser treatments, we’ve added Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy to our practice. Research has shown the utility and results in adding PRP to treatments for skin revitalization and we are seeing a shift in medicine to use less synthetic more natural additives to enhance ourselves. Depending on the condition being treated, we have the power to adjust the depth of penetration, the length of time energy is being delivered, and the energy levels — ensuring the ideal treatment for wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, age spots, stretch marks or acne scars. We can select the right handpiece to treat large areas or small, making it possible to offer treatment sessions that last just 20 minutes. And with minimal discomfort and virtually no downtime, patients are able to return to their normal activities right away. Optimal results are generally seen after three treatment sessions, and maintenance treatments are recommended every 12 to 18 months. Because the treatment can be customized to each patient’s specific skin concerns, it is safe and effective for all skin types.

“This treatment has delivered the kind of dramatic results patients find extremely compelling, making it a valuable addition to our practice.”

Once people’s concerns are alleviated, they can expect to see and feel a dramatic difference in their skin. Fine lines and wrinkles are filled in, unwanted pigment can be diminished, and stretch marks and acne scars are reduced or eliminated. In addition, pore size is reduced and the skin’s overall tone and texture is improved.

RF: A Breakthrough on Microneedling We have taken this popular aesthetic treatment option and added a secret weapon: radiofrequency (RF) energy. 24 | Breeze Magazine

FitPro Empire’s Bon & Shaz: As Strong Mentally As You Are Physically

ave you heard the saying that health is the actual wealth that a person can retain? I think we all could agree that being healthy is the key to an active, long, enjoyable life and to be healthy does not only mean being physically fit but also to have a good mental stability. Just a minimum of 30 minutes exercise can allow you to enjoy a long list of benefits such as reducing the risk of having a heart attack,

manage your weight better, having a lower cholesterol level to name a few. Guilty to say that I am not one for fitness training or anything that involves exercises in general, but once hearing what these two cover personalities for this issue has to say might just be that little push to get me, or any of you started on a healthy and consistent regime.

Coach Bon

H

asanal or better known as Coach Bon started his fitness journey when he was 32 years old. Having studied medicine during his university days in UKM, he then switched to economics back in UMS and mainly worked in sales focusing more on the tourism sector. When asked, Coach Bon mentioned that he went through a rough patch during his working years where he was overweight and experiencing several health issues and that was when he decided to take charge of his body and focus on keeping himself healthy and started his fitness journey. He admitted that it was not easy but in just 6 months of persevering through injuries and different diets that worked and did not, he noticed a huge change in his body. From 92kg he went down to 64kg and ever since then, he decided to fully commit to the fitness field and to assist others that wanted some changes in their lifestyle too. Started as a membership consultant in Core Fitness back in 2013, he decided to become a personal trainer and got his fitness instructor certification in Fitness Innovations Malaysia (FITM) in Kuala Lumpur and has also been certified by the American Council on Exercise back in 2013. For Coach Bon, some things that you see in magazines or tv are not what real fitness is, real fitness is when you feel good and confident about yourself with zero health problems. Fitpro Empire began just after he took his fitness certification and back then it was known as Body Fit where he and his wife became freelance personal trainers in Core Fitness before they decided to get a proper licence followed by having their own place in October 2018. Since the early days, Coach Bon has always been involved with sports and has even represented Selangor in basketball tournaments. He enjoys being the trainer and coach for his team the most but he stresses that the exercises that works for you during your twenties does not necessarily

‘From 92kg he went down to 64kg and ever since then, he decided to fully commit to the fitness field and to assist others that wanted some changes in their lifestyle too.’ mean that it will work as well in your thirties. With a proper training guidance, you could avoid injuries and improve your health much faster. He also loves the one on one interaction between him and his trainee and to be able to make an impact in someone’s lives is one of his goal in becoming a personal trainer. What he does gave him the chance to meet people from different walks of life who has different priorities and different goals and he loves the positive vibes that goes on inside a gym where people focus on improving themselves and at the same time building a driven community too. Other than personal training, one of the things that Coach Bon is also exploring are conducting corporate training which involves team building type of exercises. His advice for any newcomers is to fix your movement. You may have been influenced by workouts that you saw on tv or videos and have the need to do hardcore workouts right at the beginning but t is always better to take things slow and do it step by step. At Fitpro Empire, they specialize in training beginners and they want them to fall in love with training themselves rather than being forced. He also suggests brisk walking as a good starting point. Opening Fitpro Empire together with his wife has been his biggest achievement to date because they are one of the few personal training studios that exist in Kota Kinabalu and wishes to expand furthermore in the near future. FUN FACT Coach Bon is a huge fan of video games and Dungeons and Dragons. Breeze Magazine | 27

Coach Shaz

O

ther than sharing the same place of birth with her husband, Sandakan, Shaznieffah or Coach Shaz is also very passionate when it comes to keeping fit. She used to study in Ipoh Perak and graduated in 2011 from University of Tasmania, Australia majoring in International Relations, she had her 1st job in Kuala Lumpur in corporate event management. She came back to Sabah after a few years and worked as an Assistant Registrar in UMS for a couple of years and became a freelance personal trainer in Core Fitness before deciding to open their own gym; Fitpro Empire in Damai. Fitness has been in her interest ever since she was studying where it keeps her motivated and doing a simple exercise or two in between studying kept her feeling refreshed too. She took her American Council on Exercise certification together with her husband back in 2013 and for Coach Shaz, having their own gym has been one of her dreams. The feeling of being able to help people is a satisfaction for her. According to her, Fitpro Empire does not only train you physically but also mentally. What they focus on in Fitpro Empire is fixing your mindset where they want their client to go there with the right goal which is improving their lifestyle. For her, being fit does not only mean having a good body but also gaining strength to do daily tasks and activities and she herself felt stronger with consistent training and she would want others, especially women to feel the same feeling, to gain the same strength and ability as hers too. Being a mother of one, Coach Shaz does not only do personal training but also specializes in training pregnant and post-partum clients. After facing a lot of trials and errors throughout their journey, Coach Shaz together with Coach Bon thought of building a community of trainers. Their

‘Fitness has been in her interest ever since she was studying where it keeps her motivated and doing a simple exercise or two in between studying kept her feeling refreshed too.’ aim is to give guidance to new trainers so they don’t go astray and assist them in terms of learning about the sales and marketing aspect of being a personal trainer too. One of the reasons that made her pursue the personal trainer route is to guide people towards a healthier diet. When compared to Kuala Lumpur, they have a lot of experts and to get the correct guidance is easier there than it is here in KK. Certain information that were conveyed through magazines which involved health are actually not accurate so Coach Shaz made it a point to guide clients towards a more accurate diet apart from getting fit. Currently offering one on one training, to couple packages and even bootcamp, Coach Shaz wanted their gym to be a place where people can frequent to not only train but to also feel relaxed and at the same time building a healthy fitness awareness community. Her advice towards newcomers who wanted to get a push start towards a healthy living is to have a healthy and balanced diet. Avoid any pre-packaged food and once your diet is balanced, start with simple exercises such as brisk walking every morning.

Wind Down and Power Up to 2020 with better Questions

A

s we approach the New Year, many people take stock of how the year has passed and set new goals or intentions for the upcoming year. Yet often, we find that it seems like the next year ends up being the same, unfulfilled and disappointing. In my practice of coaching my clients to both release past pains or struggles, as well as to achieve their intentions, I find there are some powerful questions that you can use to make a difference to have the best year ever.

Firstly, ask better questions on the past such as: What did you do to make best experiences that you had in 2019 happen? What do these experiences tell you about your own life priorities? Which aspects would you like to carry forward to 2020? For aspects of your life that you felt were incomplete or failed, what needs to happen for it to be ‘perfect’?

Next, ask questions on what you intend to do for the future. If you could succeed and achieve easily, what would you choose to focus on in your: Career and Financial Life? Spiritual Life? Family and Personal Relationships? Personal Development? Physical and Mental Health? 30 | Breeze Magazine

by Dr. Sivakumar Kumaresan

What would your life be like if you succeeded at all that you set out to do? Who would you like to share this success with? When and where would you like it to happen?

Lastly, prepare yourself to begin the journey with these questions. What sort of person would you need to be to achieve these goals? How can you make it that you can achieve it easily, with joy, and lots of help? What is the first step you can begin with towards these changes? The quality of your life quest is set by the quality of the questions you ask yourself. What if every day was your best day? I hope that you enjoyed this article, and more importantly will use it to change your lives to live an empowered life. I wish you a wonderful 2020 ahead! Minimise Weight Gain During The Festive Seasons

by Aquila Binti Abdul Hamid Fitpro Empire

Image | Unsplash

It’s hard to stay on track with all of the amazing cuisines this upcoming Christmas and New Years. But this shouldn’t be an excuse for anyone to shift their focus of staying healthy and active. It is in fact, going to be 2020 soon and we at Fitpro Empire don’t want any of you to start your year with bad habits. Here are some hacks to stay active but still enjoy good food and great company!

1. Over-snacking is a no-no

It’s easy to get tempted by the cookies, desserts and sweets because they are always there in the making. So this is where your self-control finally comes to good yet complicated use. Practice mindful eating, only allow a quarter of a plate of simple snacks. However, try avoiding sugar cause you won’t get enough of it.

2. Stay active with family and friends

Sedentary lifestyle choices during festive seasons is a bad idea. You’re eating more calories than usual and you are not even using the fuel stocked up in you. So instead of binge watching TV shows, go play a game of charades or Santa Limbo. That can keep your heart pumpin’ in no time!

3. Portion is key

Keep your head up high and don’t go for SECONDS. Sometimes our minds tend to play mindgames and convince us of hunger but actually we’re overeating. Opt for wholesome food and use a smaller plate than usual to avoid going excessive with the caloric surplus and drink PLAIN water, most of the time you’re not even hungry, you’re just thirsty!

4. Prioritise protein

Protein such as eggs, meat, fish and beans can actually make you feel fuller and keep your appetite in bay. So include them in every meal while reducing the amount of carbs your are taking. Ultimately, this can reduce your overall calorie intake aside from increasing your metabolism rate. 32 | Breeze Magazine

5. Limit drinking your calories

It’s hard enough to control your calories on your plate, it’s another fight for what you put in your cup. The only known zero calories drinks are PLAIN water, coffee and tea. Other than those, everything has calories. Yes, including fruit juices as well as alcoholic beverages. Try limiting yourself to only a cup of sugary delight, and drink more plain water to make yourself feel full.

Dr. Sharon : Better To Prevent Than To Cure In recent years, vaccine hesitancy has become a growing concern. In January this year, Newsweek reported that the World Health Organization (WHO) has listed vaccine hesitancy as one of the top 10 health threats facing the world in 2019. We visited one of KPJ Sabah’s Consultant Paediatrician, Dr Sharon Chan Pek Suan, where she emphasised the importance of vaccination. Dr Sharon has been a Paediatrician since 1996. Before joining KPJ Sabah in 2018, she was previously attached to KPJ Damai since 2006. Dr Sharon observed that some parents either refuse vaccination completely or do not follow the recommended immunization schedule for their children due in part to the influence of the growing anti-vaccination movement (anti-vax). One of the biggest myths circulated by the anti-vax movement is that the MMR vaccination that protects children against measles, mumps and rubella, is linked to autism. However, she points out that the article published in 1998 suggesting the link has been retracted and disproved in 2010. She also strongly encourages parents to not delay immunization for their children so as to ensure that their children are constantly protected from preventable illnesses and infections. Apart from the recommended vaccinations, Dr Sharon informed us that there are several other options available that most parents are not aware of:

Rotarvirus Vaccination (recommended for babies from 2 to 3 months old) Rotavirus is a dangerous virus that causes severe vomiting and diarrhea in infants, resulting in dehydration and in some cases fatalities.

Pneumococcal Vaccination For prevention of ear infection, lung infection (pneumonia) and brain infection (meningitis).

Chickenpox Vaccination Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causing itchy blister-like rashes all over the face and body.

When speaking of costs, she expressed that the cost of vaccination is still considerably less than treatment or cure. Hospitalization bills can run up to RM700-800 a day, and while having insurance can alleviate the costs, some insurance companies may not cover previously known illnesses. Before the end of our session, we touched based with Dr Sharon on the gadget usage by children today and her thoughts on the situation. She acknowledged that this is a worrying trend as it can lead to several problems such as underdeveloped social interaction skills, as well as an increase in child obesity due to lack of exercise and physical activities. She recommends limiting screen time and encourage children to participate in social and physical interactions.

RANTS & RAVES

Holiday!

Ho Ho Ho it's that time of year again! Wow, it's amazing how fast time flies! In a blink of an eye, it's already December and Christmas is just right around the corner. I'm sure many of you are excited for the upcoming holidays and for the christmas shopping! Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, you'll still be thrilled by all the year-end sales leading up to New Years! I'm pretty sure that soon, every mall in KK will be packed with people or even tourists, snatching up all the best deals they can find! As the year 2019 comes to a close, we will all be welcoming 2020 with open arms! Hoping for it to bring prosperity and new beginnings. It is without a doubt a fact that Malaysia has a lot of public holidays. Everyone is always happy when they know that they will be able to take time off from work and just relax at home or even go on vacation. It also gets better when we get an unplanned holiday. For example, if Malaysia were to win in a huge sport tournament, we would usually get the following day off. But in Malaysia, we also have a special type of holiday. It is when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, we get a replacement holiday on Monday because Sunday is already a weekend. That is probably one of my favourites because it means that we get longer weekends! Additionally, Sabah has a few extra public holidays. These holidays are only celebrated in Sabah because it is only relevant to us. These holidays include Good Friday, Kaamatan Festival and the birthday of our governor.

36 | Breeze Magazine

by Cherelle Lim Image | Unsplash

Then again since we have so many public holidays, we must be satisfied. Wrong! Even with so many more holidays than other countries, we still complain slightly for more holidays to be implemented. If you want holidays so badly, why don’t you just go back to being a student! Then you can enjoy public holidays and school holidays. Students definitely have more holidays than adults because of their school holidays. They have mid-term breaks and long summer breaks! I think students might actually have more days off than school days! Well, unless you’re in college or university then your holidays are just about the same as the rest of us. Sorry. Nonetheless, we should enjoy every holiday we get! Especially the upcoming ones! So spend time with your family and friends, go have fun or even plan ahead for a short trip!

Smartphones: Becoming One Of The Perfect Holiday Gifts

T

he holidays are approaching fast and gift ideas should start flowing by now. Don’t panic, because the best gift you could give someone is a smartphone. It’s good for its convenience of having multiple feature all wrapped in one, especially the camera. This wasn’t the case in the past however, as it took some time for it to evolve into what we know it now. 10 years ago, people would rely on dedicated cameras and camcorders to capture moments in their lives. This is because the cameras on phones back then were far inferior compared to their standalone camera counterparts. Dedicated cameras did take better pictures, but it wasn’t convenient to carry around 1 or 2 pieces of gear on holidays. Also, the tediousness of transferring the pictures to computers before you can share them on social media made the whole process quite time consuming.

In the middle of the 2010’s decade, smartphones became more accessible and convenient to carry around. They became so popular that almost everybody wanted one. Camera wise, they still weren’t on par with dedicated cameras, but they were certainly making progress. Devices like the 41-megapixel Nokia Lumia 1020 and Samsung Galaxy Camera were trying to narrow the gap of picture quality 38| Breeze Magazine

by Noel Jinguli Image | Varios Sources

between smartphones and cameras. Users could also directly upload and share their pictures to social media, an ability cameras at the time didn’t have. As time went on, smartphones also became much thinner compare to cameras. This trend continued as smartphone cameras evolved even further, becoming what they are today. The iPhone 11 Pro, Google Pixel series, and Samsung’s S and Note series can all capture beautiful pictures on par with most consumer cameras. Now, smartphones usually have at least 3 lenses to solve issues encountered by past smartphone cameras. Each lens would serve its own purpose of zooming in without losing picture quality, fitting in more people in one picture through the wide-angle lens, and sharper images from the main shooter. It’s not all about the hardware however, the software has also made pictures a lot better. Google’s software enables its cameras to be the best option when taking night shots today. Smartphone cameras simply just get better and better over time. Thus, no wonder most people want a smartphone as a holiday gift these days.

Melly’s local favourite is the beef soup noodle, Ngiu Chap. She also likes trying something new, having tried tuhau (a type of ginger) and sayur losun (pickled leeks). You could say that she is a foodie and constantly looking for new places to eat and new food to try. When they need to take their minds off work, Melly and her husband would hangout at open air restaurants such as mamak stalls. Apart from that, they love to go to nearby beaches to feel the breeze and enjoy the sunsets. Melly’s preferred place to relax, however, is Kokol Hill. Usually, after finishing up long assignments, projects, or even the semester, Melly would travel to Kokol to reflect and clear her head. Speaking of Kokol Hill, she experienced her best moment in Sabah there. Melly brought her visiting parents to Kokol Hill. When she woke up, she had a magical experience of witnessing the sunrise while the moon was still visible. Coupled with the amazing view, Melly still has fond memories of this moment.

Just Bake

Reviewed by Noel Jinguli Image | Noel Jinguli

Just Bake is a cafe that sits in Damai Point. With its big signboard outside, visitors won't miss it. Aiming to provide a cozy and calm place for customers to chill and hang out, its interior does just that with its minimal design and glass doors allowing a lot of light in. The cafe operates from 8.30am until 6pm. If you come in before 11am, Just Bake offers a breakfast set of a croissant sandwich filled with tomatoes, coral lettuce, and your choice of tuna, or ham and chicken, with a cup of americano coffee. Apart from that, their most popular pastries are their Traditional Cheese Cakes, Cheese Puffs, and Cheese Tarts. These usually sell out the fastest everyday. However, Just Bake suggests everyone to try their Kaya Butter. Recommended to be eaten right after being served, the warm kaya (coconut jam) and butter spread between a soft bun, melts in your mouth after each bite you take. One thing that sets Just Bake apart from most cafes is; all their pastries are homemade, even their kaya. This allows them to tweak the flavours of the pastries, which I admit are not too sweet and not too bland, just right. Lastly, Just Bake recommends following their social media accounts as they frequently post promotions for customers. If you're looking for a cafe with good food and atmosphere, you should definitely try Just Bake out.

Super Ono : Super Delicious

by Adelina Adna Image | Srap

ocated at the bustling Plaza 333 Kobusak Commercial Centre in Penampang, Super Ono offers a unique dining experience, serving healthy, delicious and affordable poke bowl meals.

options), a wide array of toppings and a choice of sauces from Hawaiian Ka Lole to Japanese Shoyu. More options and portions are available at a small additional cost which allows customers to customize their poke bowl to their preference.

Poke, pronounced poh-keh, means “to slice” or “to cut crosswise into pieces” in the Hawaiian language. In ancient Hawaii, fisherman would slice up smaller reef fishes and serve them raw, seasoned with whatever they had on hand. Poke has since been adapted all around the world, served in many different forms and infused with different flavours.

Despite limited resources available in Sabah, founder, Kath, and her team has been adamant in taking great care in sourcing for and ensuring proper food prep, especially for the raw

Co-founder Owen Tan, shared how his travels with his wife, sampling poke bowls through their trips had inspired his wife, Kath, to set up Pokeboru with a friend, KK City’s first poke bowl experience in 2018. Following such positive response at their pop up stalls including the one at the popular Jesselton Artisan Market, Super Ono came to be, welcoming customers in October that year and subsequently officially opening on 11th November 2018. A poke bowl at Super Ono starts from RM16.90 which gets you 1 portion of your base (white rice, local 5 grains rice or green mix), 1 portion of protein (a selection of salmon, tuna, chicken and tofu), 4 sides (a variety of vegetables and other 44 | Breeze Magazine

ingredients served at Super Ono. After digging into the selection laid out in front of us, the quality of the food and the taste simply blew us away. Flavours were beautifully balanced and every ingredient in each bowl was in harmony with each other. The Super Ono classic sauce was a big hit with all of us, complementing the fresh Norwegian salmon, fresh tuna, chuka wakame (Japanese seaweed), corn, crabsticks, over a bed of white rice and topped with a combination of dried cranberries, fried garlic, spring onion, almond and sesame seeds. The Super Ono team observed that the majority of their customers are health conscious and gym goers. However, they were also pleasantly surprised at the reception of Super Ono by customers in the 40-80 year old demographic. One of the highlights of this establishment is when they were also well received by customers from Hawaii who enjoyed their poke bowls and loved the local and asian flavours added to this Hawaiian native dish. For those who would like to have a poke bowl to go, add just the right amount of sauce and opt for their baked fish options, instead of raw, for the best experience. It’s different, it’s yummy and it’s a healthy food option. If you haven’t, it’s definitely time to try a poke bowl at Super Ono. Note: Super Ono also offers lau sang/yee sang order.
