Miceli's in Matlacha remains closed for renovations
By PAULETTE LeBLANC pleblanc@breezenewspapers com
David and Ellen Lane, along with partners Amber and Mike Brady, took over ownership of Miceli’s on June 28, 2023, and opened on July 3
Lane said the only issue they’ve had, so far, is that once people found out the restaurant was under new ownership, they assumed there were going to be a vast amount of changes In fact, she said, none of the partners thought changing anything major would be a good idea, since Miceli’s had a history of great food and great service
The Lanes, who have also owned the Riverside Café in Vero Beach, Florida, since 2006, have learned in their experience as restaurateurs not to change something when it’s working In fact, she said, they have had the same employees, much in the same way as it’s been at Miceli’s
“We kept the same staff, exactly we may have hired one or two that we needed after some may have gone off to college or something We still have the same exact
kitchen staff,” Lane said Plans to renovate were already set in motion but happened to come together at the same time most island businesses were looking to close for possible inclement weather
“Helene flooded us we got opened quick but then Milton was coming so we had to close down We were going to do the renovations a little bit at a time but because the employees didn’t have any kind of work, we invited whoever of the employees wanted to, to come and help us They were sanding and painting they were so amazing We didn’t hire contractors to come in and paint it’s all them,”
Lane said
When the Lanes saw that Miceli’s was for sale, she said they came over to eat and check it out They spent some time talking to Miceli’s employees, who, of course, had no idea they were thinking of buying the place
“I thought, ‘This is amazing It’s pretty great,’” Lane said
Other than adding some menu items,
there aren’t any changes, Lane said, adding that the menu changes are favorites from Riverside Caf , such as Tuna Nachos and Grouper Medallion Piccata
“There are some things they we did bring over because they’re really good sell-

Island Coast closes season with 34-20 win in ‘Crosstown Showdown’ with Ida Baker
By CJ HADDAD cjhaddad@breezenewspapers com
The Island Coast Gators football team finished off its regular season with a 34-20 victory against Ida Baker in the annual “Crosstown Showdown ”
The Gators once again were propelled by a stellar performance by s e n i o r r u n n i n g b a c k G e r v a r i s Leaphart, who battled through a nagging ankle injury scoring four touchdowns on 190 yards rushing
“It felt really good,” said Island Coast head coach Tyran Jones of finishing the regular season on a h i g h - n o t e a n d e a r n i n g a r
l r y game win “We prepared all week and wanted to make sure we executed well We had to battle through a few injuries, so it was really good for our kids to fight throughout the whole game ”
While Leaphart and Christian H e n d e r s
Gator secondary also played a big role in the win The Island Coast secondary came up with three big interceptions courtesy of Rex Elliot, R o b e
d V i r d a r i u s Maloy
“ W i t h o u t ( s t a r t e r ) A n t h o n y
Harris, we had some young guys really step up for us,” Jones said “It was great to see those guys come alive ”
Leaphart suffered the ankle injury on the first play of last week's game, which limited his play almost entirely Jones said nothing would keep Leaphart off the field for his final game in a Gators uniform
“Gervaris almost wouldn't let us take him out the game before,” he said “We obviously are player-first when it comes to any injury, so we want to make sure his
health was first priority. Gervaris played through the entire (Ida Baker) game, and had to be carried off on the last play of the game because he gave everything he had He won us the game with those four touchdowns ”
Leaphart has been a mainstay in the Island Coast backfield for a number of years, and is third all-time in school history in terms of rushing yards, and second
all-time in touchdowns
“Gervaris is Island Coast,” Jones said “You can't spell Gators witho u t ‘ G ’ ( L e a p h a r t ’ s n i c k n a m e )
That’s what we say He’s a kid who, in his four years here, has missed maybe two practices, and both of those were because of college visits. That’s the kind of kid he is He has a 3 7 GPA He’s always going to be on time to class Is a leader, and leads by example Nobody is going to replace him next year He’s a kid that's really one-of-one ”
Ida Baker (0-9), totaled its seco n d - h i g h e s t p o i n t o u t p u t o n t h e night, getting a big game from senior Elias Vargas, who carried a whopping 36 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns.
Island Coast finishes the year at 4-6, going 1-2 in 3A District 13
“The biggest takeaway for us this year is that fighting adversity is going to be the key for this program as far as getting kids to buy-in,” Jones said “This is my first year with a full coaching staff It’s just getting everybody to mesh well, and towards the end of the season, we really figured it out We had no excuses this year, but now it’s time to battle adversity and get these kids to buy-in fully next year ” Jones said he’s proud of his senior class, and is looking forward to watch them grow as young men and football players as they play college ball next season
“They made the program better than how they found it, and that’s the only thing I asked from them,” Jones said Next week, Ida Baker will host Cape Coral (7-1) in a 5A District 10 matchup in the regular season finale for both programs
