The first Community Redevelopment Agency meeting led by the Cape Coral City Council will be held this morning in Council Chambers with a full agenda. The first order of business will be appointing a chair and vice chair for the CRA, as well as approving the 2024 meeting schedule. The City Council recently voted to dissolve the CRA board, therefore making City Council the board. Councilmembers Tom Hayden, Jessica Cosden and Robert

Welsh voted against dissolving the board. The new board will vote on a resolution that would approve the Community Reinvestment Area Demolition Assistance Program, which would award demolition grants to property owners of developers reimbursing 100% of the costs up to $50,000. Those exceeding $50,000 in cost will receive a pro-rated grant not to exceed $75,000. The agenda also includes commercial

vehicle parking – a proposed ordinance for nuisance regulation in South Cape, South Cape Parking Management Plan and Branding Plan, Bimini Basin mooring field design project update, Hurricane Ian recovery, as well as enhanced groundskeeping and property maintenance. The Bimini Basin mooring field design project is in its final stage and pending staff review with an anticipated cost of $497,331.

ARC Starlight Auction raises nearly $300,000 By CHUCK BALLARO

news@breezenewspapers.com

It takes about $1 million per year to run the Animal Refuge Center, caring for and housing the more than 300 dogs and cats who live there, paying staff and many other things. All that money comes through the generosity of others, most of which is raised through smaller fundraising events and online donations. Much of the money ARC raised came on Saturday at the Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort when it held its 29th annual Starlight Auction, where animal lovers and donors bid on some of the most amazing items. The event was expected to raise around $250,000, a far cry from when the auction began, when ARC was downright giddy about raising $12,000. ARC reported Tuesday that the event raised a total of $296,271. Betty Hughes, treasurer and auction director

The Hurricane Ian damage for the CRA had eight focus areas – Lafayette building, Chester Street Resource Center, street and tree lighting, 47th Terrace, dumpster enclosures, cameras, tree lighting and swales and right of way. The update will share the damage and the repairs that have been made and underway. Other discussions during the workshop will focus on Community Redevelopment specialist and trades specialist positions, as well as a CRA project update. The meeting starts at 9 a.m., in Council Chambers, 1015 Cultural Park Parkway.

for ARC, said this event takes a significant chunk out of the expenses needed to run the no-kill shelter. “This is the foundation of what we can achieve each year. We find homes for these animals and it doesn’t matter how long it takes,” Hughes said. “We have a state-of-the-art vet clinic and we’ve come back from Ian and finished the last project which was replacing all the fencing.” Dave and Jennifer Nichols were the title sponsors for the auction, and have been involved with it from the beginning. Jennifer had been a volunteer there before that. “ARC is very near and dear to my heart. They provide such a service to our community. They take in animals that have been abused and neglected and we rescue and rehabilitate them,” Jennifer said. “Our community is lucky to have an organization like this to help those who need it the

The Lee County Delegation of state legislators will have a full agenda of proposed bills Thursday to discuss that could dramatically alter the balance of power in county government by introducing a new elected county mayor, an expansion of the Board of County Commissioners and reshaping the taxing districts of the Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District and Fort Myers Beach Mosquito Control District through mergers. All of the proposed state bills would require referendums. The delegation of eight state legislators whose districts cover Lee County are scheduled to meet at 7 a.m. at Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers, in the Nursing Building, Room AA-177. A vote by the legislators at the delegation would be the first step in moving the legislation up to state legislative committees. The Lee County Board of County Commissioners scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in Commission Chambers at the Old Courthouse, 2120 Main St., Fort Myers. The commissioners are expected to discuss the proposed county mayor bill and a bill which would create two new at-large seats on the county board beginning in 2026. The Lee County Board of County Commissioners voted 3-1 last month to oppose a new elected mayor. State Rep. Mike Giallombardo (R-79), whose district includes Cape Coral and Matlacha, has introduced the legislation to
