20 YEARS of friendships BREWED
W
hat do Thursday, beer, wings and hockey all have in common? Great friends to enjoy them with! Jammie, Peter, Brian and Dana have been friends for over 20 years. Meeting through hockey and business they have been coming to Jack’s to enjoy consistent hearty food and friendly wait staff since we opened. They come by so often they have their own table that is always reserved for them. They have even renamed Rick Pais, one of our bartenders who has been serving them since
day one, Rick Astor’s! They consider Rick one of the biggest reasons they come into the bar every week; it’s like he’s the missing link in their squad. Feature story continues on page 4

Jammie Kennedy is one of the owners of Snapd. Snapd has been a major part of bringing the Newmarket community together and featuring all of Jack Astor’s events in their publications. Dana, Peter and Brian, along with Jammie, all agree wings are their favorite food, “honey garlic hot and mild” is what they order. Beer is also a resounding favourite with this group of guys, and IPA seems to be what they enjoy the most. Sitting down to chat with these four was a fun evening filled with many laughs. You can tell by the number of staff and patrons that come up to say hi, that clearly, they have a history of being community Newmarket guys. Friendships are important to this group and 20 years of stories and laughs are still going strong. Jack Astor’s is proud to provide a place for friends to connect, and for these four guys to watch special sporting events, like World Hockey, Olympics or any regular season hockey game.

Interview with
ROD HAFEZI OF FLOYDIAN IMAGES
Rod started out much the same way any of us have; with a part time job at Shoppers in the photo lab (back when people still developed film!) which led to a photography hobby. He has been working full time at Jack Astor’s as a server for about 4½ years, until recently, when he took a chance and spoke to his General Manager at Jack’s Newmarket, Danny DiPucchio. He confided in him that he wanted to pursue a career in photography – Danny gave him the chance to do that by providing opportunity at their own Jack’s events. At first, just taking pics from a Jack’s Patio Party, leading to shooting and showing live video feed from their Bartender Flair Competition. From those opportunities, Rod has been able to switch gears, and is now working professionally as a full-time photographer/videographer (but he hasn’t forgotten about Jack’s – he is still a server there as well!). Rod says that the best thing about working at Jack’s as a photographer is all ‘about working
with people that you know and trust’. It gave him the confidence to try and succeed at something that was just an interest. What sets Jack’s apart from other restaurants? ‘The atmosphere and the people’, he says. Rod tried his hand at serving at a high-end hotel where celebrities, like Priscilla Presley and Geddy Lee from Rush, were at his tables. But even the excitement of serving that type of clientele couldn’t compare to the people, staff and vibe at Jack’s. Working for people like his General Manager Danny makes Jack’s an amazing place to work and shows just how much Jack’s managers try to support their workers. Rod is now doing engagement photos and weddings (he even shot one of the Jack’s Manager’s wedding!). Check out his work on his website www.floydianimages.com or email him for any of your upcoming photography and videography needs floydian.images@gmail.com.
local business Buzz Beatty’s Honey Farm Here at our Newmarket Jack Astor’s we are giving guests something to buzz about! We’re offering menu items made with fresh ingredients that are found right here in our own backyard. Beatty’s Honey Farm is a family operated honey farm located just a short distance from our restaurant. From farm to table (or should we say hive to home), Beatty’s offers 100% pure unpasteurized Ontario honey products directly to consumers including us here at Jack Astor’s Newmarket. Enjoy our Beatty’s Honey Hot Chicken Fingers or try Beatty’s Honey Hot Sauce on your wings. A portion of the proceeds will go to supporting Beatty’s Bees, helping to create new colonies while maintaining and growing existing colonies. Bees are the pollinators for about one-third of the plants we eat. It’s up to all of us to take the steps needed to sustain these precious pollinators of our food for the future. Buying local honey and supporting local honey farmers is one step towards this goal.
