The South African Mint 2015 Protea coin series honours The Life of a Legend: Nelson Mandela on his journey in Johannesburg.
Introduced in 2013, each Protea series commemorates a different chapter of Mr Mandela’s life, with the 2015 series focussing on Madiba’s early years in Johannesburg. As a youth in the City of Gold, Mandela encountered many new friends and mentors who contributed in shaping the young man into an internationally revered icon. The 200 limited edition launch sets, packaged in attractive wooden boxes depicting street maps of Johannesburg, include a booklet and an exclusive, specially designed medallion depicting two iconic Johannesburg landmarks associated with Mandela, on one side, the family residence in Soweto’s Vilakazi Street, backed by Nelson Mandela Bridge - named in honour of Madiba’s legacy.

Krugerrand Series
Common Obverse
F
irst minted by the South African Mint in 1967, the Krugerrand contains one troy ounce of pure gold. The design on the obverse of each of the four coins dates back to the county’s first circulation coin series introduced in 1892 by the then President of the ZAR, Paul Kruger. The reverse design of the prancing springbok was designed by renowned South African sculptor Coert Steynberg. In 1980, the fractional
Krugerrands – of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz were added to the series. This Krugerrand Prestige Set is a unique opportunity to own four proof quality coins issued in 2015 as a limited edition. The coins are painstakingly crafted and finished, resulting in it being an exceptional addition to any collection. These proof Krugerrands are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz, as singles or in a set or in a Prestige set.

n 1997 SA Mint combined the R2 Crown and 2½c Tickey sterling silver coins into a single series. In 2012 we introduced our current Trains of South Africa theme with a coin celebrating the launch of the Gautrain mass rapid transit railway system. Diesel-electric locomotives followed in 2013 and electric locomotives and trains in 2014. The 2015 coins commemorate
the nostalgic heydays of steam-powered locomotives. Intricately designed and crafted, this highly collectable coin series seeks to capture the magic of the steam era through a series of iconic engines. The sterling silver R2 crown features the class 15F steam locomotive, first introduced in 1914. It went on to become the best known and most successful main line 8

SA’s Marine Protected Areas
Common Obverse
T
he South African government has established a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to monitor and protect living marine resources. Established within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone, the MPAs encourage the sustainable management of our offshore biodiversity. In 2013 SA Mint launched the 4-coin Silver Series highlighting these unique and varied coastal ecosystems. The first series featured the iSimangaliso MPA in the Delagoa bioregion, followed by the MPAs in in the Natal bioregion in 2014. The 2015 series features the MPAs in the Agulhas bioregion. Beautifully designed and intricately detailed, the 50c (2 oz) features a pair of Cape gannets, with a group of African penguins. A
majestic southern right whale and her calf are depicted on the 20c (1 oz) coin. Once on the brink of extinction, today South Africa protects all whales and encourages ecotourism. Another protected species whose numbers are increasing is the Cape or South African fur seal portrayed on the 10c (1/2 oz) coin. But it’s not only larger creatures that MPAs benefit. MPAs offer sanctuary to entire ecosystems where fascinating, smaller creatures thrive. The exquisitely beautiful basket star is one such example, and it appears on the 5c (1/4 oz) coin. The 2015 series is available till July 2016 and all are minted in quantities of 1000. 12

The artfully crafted launch set depicts the broad variety fauna and flora in the borderless Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. The second sterling silver coin represents the importance of responsible marine management to protect the delicate ecosystems - the silver coins are available in quantities of 1500 each. Aditionally, 200 limited edition sets comprising all four coins are available. The series shares the common obverse showing the map of the Kogelberg Biosphere area.
